July 20, 2019 Dear Friends:
a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS
Thank you for joining us at the 25th anniversary of Fire Island Dance Festival. You have truly made our silver anniversary shine with your generosity today and over the last quarter century. We feel so grateful to have had Fire Island as our home, and to have watched the festival flourish and grow in the Pines since its advent in 1995. The island has long been a cherished safe space for members of the LGBTQ community, and that spirit and strength has and continues to inspire us as we enter this celebratory year. Off the island, however, many people are without a welcoming place and supportive community to turn to. For these past 25 years and beyond, we stand together to protect and support the most vulnerable among us in these troubling times when vital social services are increasingly at risk. Together, Dancers Responding to AIDS, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and your support are providing healthy meals, lifesaving medication and emergency financial assistance to people in need in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. We are so grateful for the spectacular dancers, choreographers and dance companies who make this festival and our work possible, as well as the theatrical professionals and volunteers who transform the idyllic bay into a breathtaking waterfront stage. Thank you to our sponsors, ticket buyers and generous providers of services and housing who are joining us for another year. We couldn’t do it without you. We are forever indebted to the dedicated members of the Fire Island Dance Festival Committee and this year’s Benefit Committee for your dedication to ensuring our fundraising remains strong this year and every year. Whether this is your 25th Fire Island Dance Festival or your first, welcome. And thank you for making a difference.
Best wishes,

July 20, 2019 Welcome to Fire Island Dance Festival! Now in its 25th year, Fire Island Dance Festival is one of the most treasured and anticipated cultural events of our community. It has been called by one dance critic “the jewel in the crown of American dance festivals” and has been included several times in The New York Times’ most important dance events of the year. The Pines is justly proud to host such a premier event. By attending this year’s festival, you will be dazzled by some of the world’s best dance companies, share in the community spirit of the Pines and help Dancers Responding to AIDS in its impressive record of supporting both the arts and people living with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses. FIPPOA salutes the dance festival, the committee, the dancers and all who give so much to make this festival possible each summer. It is a special pleasure this summer to again welcome Fire Island Dance Festival.

DANCERS RESPONDING TO AIDS In a New York City apartment 28 years ago, two dozen dancers brainstormed what they could do to help so many of their colleagues who were battling AIDS. Denise Roberts Hurlin and Hernando Cortez, dancers with Paul Taylor Dance Company at the time, mobilized the group and ultimately created Dancers Responding to AIDS in 1991. It was the dance community’s first ongoing effort to raise awareness and money to directly help those living with AIDS. The vitality of DRA comes from the extraordinary compassion and efforts of the performing arts community to fund a safety net of social services for those in need. As a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Dancers Responding to AIDS helps support the essential programs of The Actors Fund, including the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and The Dancers’ Resource while also providing grants to more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. Funds raised by DRA and Broadway Cares help to ensure that those most in need have access to lifesaving medications, counseling, healthy meals, emergency financial assistance and more. Dancers Responding to AIDS has proven since 1991 that what we do together makes a difference.

LEADERSHIP EVENT SPONSORED BY DIRECT V JULY 19, 2019, AT ALBERT LEPAGE PAVILION AT WHY TE HALL An evening reser ved for Leadership Suppor ters featuring a special per formance by Ephrat Asherie Dance
ODEON Choreography by Ephrat Asherie in collaboration with EAD Music composed by Ernesto Nazareth and recorded live by Ehud Asherie, Eduardo Belo, Sergio Krakowski and Ranjan Ramchandani Costumes by Mark Eric Performed by Ephrat “Bounce” Asherie, Manon Bal, Valerie “Ms. Vee” Ho, Linda “LaNaija” Madueme, Matthew “Megawatt” West Early 20th century Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth was known for melding classical music with Afro-Brazilian rhythms. Odeon reimagines Nazareth’s virtuosic compositions and creates a world that offers what the Chicago Tribune called “a wholly original style and sound.” Odeon premiered at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in June 2018 and was made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Odeon was created in part during a residency at the Pillow Lab and with the support of the Jacob’s Pillow Fellowship at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post. Additional development was made possible through a technical residency at MASS MoCA, co-sponsored by Jacob’s Pillow, with additional support from the National Dance Project’s Production Residency for Dance Program, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. EAD would like to thank Guggenheim Works & Process, Lincoln Center Education, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Extended Life Program and TOWN Stages for additional developmental support. Special thanks to Deborah and Charles Adelman, Eyal and Yael Aronoff, Stuart Coleman, Matthew and Cynthia Hertz, Marjorie Miller and Morrie Sandler for their generous support. Ephrat Asherie Dance is a New York City-based dance company rooted in street and social dance. Dedicated to revealing the inherent complexities of these forms, EAD explores the expansive, narrative qualities of various street and club styles including breaking, hip hop, house and vogue. ephratasheriedance.com
