July 16, 2022 Dear friends It feels so good to be back! Thank you for returning with us to this picturesque spot on the Great South Bay in Fire Island Pines. We have missed you. The luminous performers here would not shine as bright as they do without the warm and welcoming audience that is so emotionally generous year after year. We could have only hoped during the first presentation in 1995 that Fire Island Dance Festival would grow into the experience it is today. Our home here in Fire Island Pines continues to fill us with gratitude. It is our pleasure to return to this historic safe space for the LGBTQ+ community after a three-year, pandemic-induced hiatus. These are troubling times for many, whether due to COVID-19 or other debilitating illnesses, the ongoing threat to our civil rights or the renewed fight to secure reproductive health care for all. The work we do through your support of Dancers Responding to AIDS and Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS feels all the more pressing. Your ongoing assistance ensures that those in need in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. receive meals and medication, health care and hope. The immense gratitude we have for the spectacular dancers, choreographers and dance companies who make this festival and our work possible knows no bounds. We continue to be awestruck by the theatrical professionals and volunteers who transform the blissful bay into a dynamic waterfront stage. HOST JAMES WHITESIDE
James Whiteside is redefining the meaning of multihyphenate as a principal dancer and choreographer for the American Ballet Theatre, hilarious pop music performer, drag queen, podcast host and author of the memoir Center Center. He has been a principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre since 2013 and has choreographed for pop stars Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift and Fischerspooner. Off the ABT stage, Whiteside performs pop music under the stage name JbDubs and hosts his own popular podcast, “The Stage Rightside with James Whiteside.”

Requiem was initially inspired by the Italian Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi who, forced by the oppression of her society, used her brushes to win the admiration of kings and eventually her own legal right as an independent woman. Her portrait is a reflection of the kind of suppression of freedom that still surrounds many women today. Provoked by the tragedies of 9/11/01, Requiem evolved into this work reflective of its time and we honor the loss we all have endured since March 2020. This ballet was created with the support of the New York State Council on the Arts and Altria Group Inc.

Although Bob Fosse & Gwen Verdon collaborated on several projects throughout their years together, the three movements shown in Sweet Gwen Suite mark the first time Verdon was credited as co-choreographer. Bessie Award honoree Jacqulyn Buglisi began her career with the Martha Graham Dance Company. Her repertoire includes commissions by Alvin Ailey, The Joyce Theater and Juilliard, with performances at New York City Center, Jacob’s Pillow, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center and the Melbourne Festival. Kiara DeNae Felder grew up in Cary, NC. They attended the Cary Ballet Conservatory, University of North Carolina School of the Arts and Pacific Northwest Ballet School. They joined Atlanta Ballet in 2012 and, in 2017, joined Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. In 2022, Felder debuted the role of Juliet in Ivan Cavalari’s premiere creation of Roméo et Juliet. Born in New York City, Catherine Hurlin was recently promoted to principal at American Ballet Theatre. To great acclaim, she debuted full-length roles of Kitri, Odette/Odile and Callirhoe at ABT’s 2022 season at the Metropolitan Opera House. Along with the classics she has performed contemporary works by Twyla Tharp, Alexei Ratmansky, Wayne McGregor, Mark Morris, Benjamin Millepied, Michelle Dorrance, Joshua Beamish, Jessica Lang and Caleb Teicher.

Originally from New Zealand, Harrison James has performed as a principal dancer with The National Ballet of Canada since 2016. He has performed such roles as Albrecht in Giselle, Stanley Kowalski in the Canadian premiere of John Neumeier’s A Streetcar Named Desire and Benno in Swan Lake. MIRIAM MILLER Miriam Miller was born in Iowa City, Iowa. In January 2015, she became an apprentice with New York City Ballet. While still an apprentice she performed the role of Titania in George Balanchine’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as featured roles in Balanchine’s Harlequinade (La Bonne Fée) and Peter Martins’ Swan Lake (Princess). Miller became a member of the corps in 2016 and was promoted to soloist in January 2022.

G EO R G I N A PA Z C O G U I N Georgina Pazcoguin, “The Rogue Ballerina,” has danced with the New York City Ballet since 2002 and became the first Asian American female soloist in NYCB’s history. She is co-founder of Final Bow for Yellowface, which raises awareness and promotes inclusivity through sincere representation of all ethnicities in the performing arts. Credits include TV’s Fosse/Verdon and Broadway’s On the Town and Cats. She is the author of Swan Dive: The Making of a Rogue Ballerina.
ADRIANA PIERCE
Adriana Pierce’s dance career began with New York City Ballet and Miami City Ballet, and continues on Broadway and in film and TV, with choreography seen on stages around the country. Pierce is a New York Choreographic Institute alumna and she completed an inaugural fellowship at New York University’s Center for Ballet and the Arts. She is one of Dance Magazine’s “25 To Watch” in 2022.

Choreographer Adriana Pierce created the initiative #QueerTheBallet to broaden the scope of classical ballet to authentically include LGBTQ+ voices and narratives. Focusing on queer cis women, trans people of all genders and nonbinary dancers in ballet, #QueerTheBallet seeks to “queer” our ballet spaces and explore choreography often absent from ballet stages. Gwen Verdon was a four-time Tony Award-winning dancer and actor who created some of Broadway’s most iconic roles in such shows as Damn Yankees, Sweet Charity and Chicago. Bob Fosse was one of the most celebrated and influential choreographers of the 20th century. He remains the only person to win Oscar, Tony and Emmy Awards in the same year. The Verdon Fosse Legacy’s mission is to promote, preserve and protect the artistic and intellectual property of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, including the copyrights in the dances and the trademark rights in the names Bob Fosse and Fosse. DANCERS RESPONDING TO AIDS In a New York City apartment 31 years ago, two dozen dancers brainstormed what they could do to help so many of their colleagues who were battling AIDS. Denise Roberts Hurlin and Hernando Cortez, dancers with Paul Taylor Dance Company at the time, mobilized the group and ultimately created Dancers Responding to AIDS in 1991. It was the dance community’s first ongoing effort to raise awareness and money to directly help those living with AIDS. The vitality of DRA comes from the extraordinary compassion and efforts of the performing arts community to fund a safety net of social services for those in need. As a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Dancers Responding to AIDS helps support the essential programs of the Entertainment Community Fund (formerly The Actors Fund), including the HIV Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and The Dancers’ Resource while also providing grants to more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. Funds raised by DRA and Broadway Cares help ensure that those most in need have access to lifesaving medications, counseling, healthy meals, emergency financial assistance and more.
