grateful to our sponsors, ticket buyers and generous providers of services and housing who are joining us for another year. And we extend a special welcome to our first time guests. You’re in for something special. We are
Thank you to the
dedicated members of the Fire Island Dance Festival Committee and this year’s 20th Anniversary
Benefit Committee for your diligent hard work to ensure our fundraising for this special year is record-breaking. Over the years, the exceptional talents of hundreds of dancers have made Fire Island Dance Festival a defining event for DRA and now a staple of summer life in the Pines. We are in tremendous debt to the world-class dancers and choreographers who make this festival possible, as well as all of the volunteers and theatre professionals who use
stunning dance performances.
Thank you for celebrating the 20th anniversary with us. As you watch today’s dancers, we hope you will do so with a loving nod to the past, a sense of pride in all that has been accomplished today and a bright, hopeful eye to the future. “This,” as was said at the very first event, “is why we dance!” Best wishes,

July 19, 2014 Welcome to the 20th Fire Island Dance Festival. Fire Island Dance Festival is one of the most treasured and anticipated cultural events of our community. It has been called by one dance critic “the jewel in the crown of American dance festivals” and has been included several times in The New York Times list of the top 12 events of the year. The Pines is justly proud to host such a premier event. By attending this year’s festival you will be dazzled by some of the world’s best dance companies, will share in the community spirit of the Pines, and will help DRA in its impressive record of supporting both the arts and people living with AIDS and other critical illnesses. FIPPOA salutes the dance festival, the committee, the dancers and all who give so much to make this festival possible each summer. It is a special pleasure this summer to again welcome Fire Island Dance Festival.

story In a New York City apartment more than 20 years ago, two dozen dancers from ballet, modern and contemporary dance companies brainstormed what they could do to help so many of their colleagues who were battling HIV/AIDS. Denise Roberts Hurlin and Hernando Cortez, dancers with Paul Taylor Dance Company at the time, mobilized the group and ultimately created Dancers Responding to AIDS in 1991. It was the dance community’s first ongoing effort to raise awareness and money to directly help those living with AIDS.
us
As more people in the dance community continued to lose their battle with HIV/AIDS, Hernando and Denise were moved to do even more. Hernando proposed a house concert on Fire Island. In July 1995, the first Fire Island Dance Festival included seven dancers performing on the deck of Stan Howard’s bayfront home. It raised an amazing $7,939.
Dancers Responding to AIDS also taps into the energy of younger dancers with the Stars of Tomorrow invitational, performed each spring at Purchase College, and through "Dancers Who Care," a new fundraising initiative for high school and college students. The efforts of those dancers who met in Hernando’s apartment more than 20 years ago were not made in vain. They continue to grow as new generations of dancers and dance enthusiasts come together because of a shared desire to give back to their communities and support those living with HIV/AIDS.
Denise Roberts Hurlin Photo by Lois Greenfield
In 1995 Denise left Paul Taylor Dance Company, followed by Hernando in 1996, to join the Broadway Cares staff. Six years later, Hernando moved on to become artistic director of Verb Ballets in Cleveland.

In June 1993, Dancers Responding to AIDS supporters were dancing down the streets in the New York City Pride March when they literally leapt into Tom Viola and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Tom kindly asked, “Who are you people?” Denise replied, “We’re Dancers Responding to AIDS.” This led to a conversation about how Dancers Responding to AIDS and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS could have a greater impact if they worked together. Two months later, DRA became a program of BC/EFA.
Denise has led DRA’s fundraising growth not only by expanding Fire Island Dance Festival but by adding other events and initiatives, including the DRA Angels Circle, a year-round major giving program. Borrowing from the successes learned at Fire Island Dance Festival, DRA launched Hudson Valley Dance Festival in 2013 to add spectacular dance to that area's rich culture while simultaneously making a difference for those affected by HIV/AIDS. Each October in Catskill, NY, Hudson Valley Dance Festival transforms a 115-year-old wooden warehouse into a modern-day dance venue. Dance from the Heart provides a rare opportunity in New York City each winter to see, up-close, the best of the dance world right in the heart of the Chelsea neighborhood.

Alvin Ailey said that one of America’s richest treasures was the cultural heritage of the African-American – “sometimes sorrowful, sometimes jubilant, but always hopeful.” This enduring classic is a tribute to that heritage and to Ailey’s genius. THE TOp 10 REASONS THAT TOMMy-GARBAGE cONTINUES TO SUppORT FIRE ISlAND DANcE FESTIvAl
10. Because my kid needs the community service credit. 9. Because, as a luminary, I’d do anything for free tickets. 8. Because of the Sunday pick-up, I can skip church. 7. Because it’s the only place I can wear the Hawaiian shirt my mother-in-law gave me. 6. (Sorry Denise, about that equipment/garbage mix up.) 5. Because sitting through the Sunday matinee provides the FDA recommended annual requirement of Vitamin D. 4. Because Chris Davis promised to teach me the time-step. 3. Because I’m still dreaming of a DRA goody bag I didn’t have to dumpster-dive to get. 2. Because I have nothing better to do in July. AND THE NUMBER ONE REASON that Tommy-Garbage continues to support Fire Island Dance Festival
1. Because I’m a glutton for punishment and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The DRA Angels Circle offers an opportunity to support Dancers Responding to AIDS year-round. Angels receive an exciting array of benefits as a show of our appreciation for their generous contribution of $1,000 or more, not related to the purchase of event tickets. Donations to the Angels Circle are vital as they provide a dependable foundation of support for hundreds of HIV/AIDS and family service organizations nationwide and the myriad of social service programs of The Actors Fund, including The Dancers’ Resource and the HIV/AIDS Initiative. In appreciation of an annual contribution of $1,000 or more, Angels receive VIP status at some of Broadway Cares’ annual events including Gypsy of the Year and the Easter Bonnet Competition, as well as a host of other exciting benefits. For more information about the benefits of the Angels Circle, please contact Ryan Walls, senior development officer, at walls@broadwaycares.org or 212.840.0770, ext. 275. Dancers Responding to AIDS acknowledges and thanks the generous members of the DRA Angels Circle for their invaluable and sustaining support. Names in bold indicate DRA Archangels, donors who increased their gift by 25 percent or more over the previous year.
