With love from your friends at 1 Ocean

July 16, 2016 Dear Friends: Renowned poet Frank O’Hara, once a fixture on the New York arts scene and here in the Pines, wrote “A True Account of Talking to the Sun at Fire Island” in 1958. In it, he said:

“I know you love Manhattan, but you ought to look up more often. And always embrace things, people earth sky stars, as I do, freely and with the appropriate sense of space.”

Fire Island and the Pines continue to provide our community that hamlet in which we can escape the muggy city summer for relaxation and artistic expression that fills our soul. And what better way to do so than here at the 22nd edition of Fire Island Dance Festival. From showcasing world-renowned dance companies to previewing emerging performers destined to make their mark, this festival provides us all with the chance to see the best in dance while enjoying one of the most awe-inspiring vistas imaginable. Dancers Responding to AIDS and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS deeply value the relationships we have built in this oasis over the past 22 years and we warmly embrace ones we are creating today. Together, we continue to ensure brighter tomorrows for those hoping for a helping hand up or a supportive shoulder to lean on. A colleague living with HIV/AIDS. Dancers and other performing artists coping with injury, financial challenges, emotional hardships and more. We are so grateful to the world-class dancers, choreographers and dance companies who make this festival possible, as well as the multitudes of theatre professionals and volunteers who have transformed this waterfront escape into an “appropriate sense of space” perfect for dance. Our heartfelt thanks go to the dedicated members of the Fire Island Dance Festival Committee and this year’s Benefit Committee for their dedication to ensuring our fundraising remains strong this and every year. We are grateful to our sponsors, ticket buyers and generous providers of services and housing who are joining us for another year. And we extend a special welcome to our first-time guests. You’re in for something special. Best wishes,

Tom Viola Executive Director Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS

July 16, 2016

Welcome to Fire Island Dance Festival! Now in its 22nd year, Fire Island Dance Festival is one of the most treasured and anticipated cultural events of our community. It has been called by one dance critic “the jewel in the crown of American dance festivals” and has been included several times in The New York Times’ list of the top 12 events of the year. The Pines is justly proud to host such a premier event. By attending this year’s festival you will be dazzled by some of the world’s best dance companies, will share in the community spirit of the Pines and will help Dancers Responding to AIDS in its impressive record of supporting both the arts and people with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses. FIPPOA salutes the dance festival, the committee, the dancers and all who give so much to make this festival possible each summer. It is a special pleasure this summer to again welcome Fire Island Dance Festival.

PROG R AM Glenn Allen Sims and Linda Celeste Sims MATCH -The First Installment Choreography by Abdul Latif in collaboration with the dancers of D2D/T Music by Joel “J.PERIOD” Astman Costumes by Peter Hidalgo Set Construction by Hudson Scenic Studio Performed by Glenn Allen Sims and Linda Celeste Sims with Eury German, Nik Owens, Jillian Roberts, Valentina Strokopytova

MATCH- The First Installment was created by Abdul Latif to benefit Dancers Responding to AIDS with generous support from a Legacy Sponsor in memory of Tom Morgan, Legacy Sponsor Rockefeller Brothers Fund and Legacy Sponsor Karl Kemp. MATCH- The First Installment is a celebration of the fire between two extraordinary dancers and the heat they ignite in us whenever we witness them dance.

Ballet Contemporáneo de Camagüey Lasting Embrace Choreography by Pedro Ruiz Music: “Concerto No. 23 for Piano and Orchestra in A Major” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Performed by Armando Gomez Brydson and Jesus Arias Pagues This performance of Lasting Embrace was made possible with generous support from Legacy Sponsor Rockefeller Brothers Fund and Titanium Sponsors Peter McKown & Kenneth Heng. The duet Lasting Embrace reflects the beauty that occurs when two bodies sustain and depend on one another. This is the duality that exists between one soul and two people and the vulnerability that is offered by the masculine body when immersed in its found emotions. Throughout this poetic duet, virility and sensitivity are absolutely captured as one.

Wendy Whelan and Brian Brooks First Fall Choreography by Brian Brooks Music: “String Quartet No. 3,” “Mishima,” “Orphee’s Bedroom,” “1957: Memory Montage,” “November 25: Ichigaya,” “1962 Body Building,” “Blood Oath,” “Mishima/Closing” by Philip Glass Costumes by Karen Young Performed by Wendy Whelan and Brian Brooks This performance of First Fall was made possible with generous support from Titanium Sponsors Eric Winterling & Michael Peck. Sarah Crompton of The Telegraph in London described First Fall: “She falls repeatedly over his prone body, in a gesture of trust, and rises again like some gorgeous sea creature, pushing upwards toward light, her body slanted as Brooks crouches beneath her. It is both beautiful and compelling, suggesting more than it says.”

KEIGWIN + COMPANY Episodes (excerpts) Choreography by Larry Keigwin Music by Leonard Bernstein, performed by the National Symphony Orchestra Costumes by Sara Laux Performed by Kacie Boblitt, Brandon Cournay, Benjamin Freedman, Kile Hotchkiss, Emily Schoen, Jaclyn Walsh This performance of excerpts from Episodes was made possible with generous support from Titanium Sponsor The Fund in the Sun Foundation. Using the high spirits and youthful verve of On the Town as an engine, Episodes seamlessly combines a sense of theatricality with vigorous athleticism. The dancers’ dynamic movement and partnering is imbued with energetic playfulness.

MADBOOTS DANCE For Us Choreography and costumes by Jonathan Campbell and Austin Diaz Music: “Song” by Allen Ginsberg; “Somewhere” by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, performed by Shirley Bassey; “Over the Rainbow” by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, performed by Judy Garland Performed by Jonathan Campbell and Austin Diaz

For Us was created by Jonathan Campbell and Austin Diaz to benefit Dancers Responding to AIDS with generous support from Legacy Sponsors Ryan Zanin & Ari Ginsburg. In response to the tragedy in Orlando, For Us is ultimately about love. It is threaded with the hope that someday humanity will prevail and we’ll all live freely. Love will win.

Gallim Dance Mike and Harvey Choreography by Andrea Miller, in collaboration with the Gallim dancers Music: “Adagio for Strings” by Samuel Barber Costumes by Eric Winterling Performed by Gwyn Mackenzie, Austin Tyson, Paul Vickers This performance of Mike and Harvey was made possible with generous support from Legacy Sponsors Nathan Greenlee & Koji Imai and from a Legacy Sponsor in memory of Tom Morgan. Every bond, unconditional, needs a place to wash ashore between storms. Harvey Alter and Mike Young -pioneers of honest and unprejudiced love, and everything else that grows well in Fire Island - found theirs more than four decades ago, by the bay waters that hold this very dance stage. Masters of loyalty, forgiveness and quiet joy, Mike and Harvey is a tribute to their lives. The Pines’ sunset will miss your holding hands.

Dance Theatre of Harlem Equilibrium (BROTHERHOOD) Choreography by Darrell Grand Moultrie Music by Kenji Bunch Costumes by Eric Winterling Performed by Dylan Santos, Anthony Javier Savoy, Jorge Andres Villarini

Equilibrium (BROTHERHOOD) was created by Darrell Grand Moultrie to benefit Dancers Responding to AIDS with generous support from a Legacy Sponsor in memory of Tom Morgan and from Legacy Sponsor James J. BILL CUNNINGHAM 1929-2016

His artistry over 20 years captured the visual splendor and importance of Fire Island Dance Festival and he shared it with the world. Always dressed in his utilitarian blue worker’s jacket and khaki pants, he simultaneously blended into the dance festival crowd and stood out as a master at work. He photographed the festival regularly, each time focusing his unique artistic eye on the beauty of dance, finding the nuance and brilliance in the movement. We are forever grateful for his contributions, which elevated us all. He will be deeply missed.

WHAT WE DO TOGETHER MAKES A DIFFERENCE

A program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS

DAN CE RS R E S P O N D I N G TO AI DS In a New York City apartment 25 years ago, two dozen dancers brainstormed what they could do to help so many of their colleagues who were battling AIDS. Denise Roberts Hurlin and Hernando Cortez, dancers with Paul Taylor Dance Company at the time, mobilized the group and ultimately created Dancers Responding to AIDS in 1991. It was the dance community’s first ongoing effort to raise awareness and money to directly help those living with AIDS. The vitality of Dancers Responding to AIDS comes from the extraordinary compassion and efforts of the performing arts community to fund a safety net of social services for those in need. As a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, DRA helps support the essential programs of The Actors Fund, including the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and The Dancers’ Resource, while also providing grants to more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states. Funds raised by DRA and Broadway Cares help to ensure that those most in need have access to lifesaving medications, counseling, healthy meals, emergency financial assistance and more. DRA has proven since 1991 that what we do together makes a difference.

LE AD E RS H I P E VE NT sponsored by DIRECTV July 15, 2016, at Albert Lepage Pavilion at Whyte Hall An evening reserved for Leadership Supporters featuring a special performance by Dorrance Dance SOUNDspace (adapted for Fire Island Dance Festival) Choreography by Michelle Dorrance with improvisational solo work by the dancers Performed by Megan Bartula, Kurt Csolak, Brittany DeStefano, Charles Renato, Leonardo Sandoval, Caleb Teicher, Emma Wylie

SOUNDspace explores what is most beautiful and exceptional about tap dancing – movement as music. Originally a site-specific work in direct response to the unique acoustics and sonic possibilities of New York City’s St. Mark’s Church, SOUNDspace pushes the boundaries of contemporary tap technique and inspires the body’s response to the myriad sounds and textures of the feet. Dorrance Dance, led by artistic director Michelle Dorrance, aims to honor tap dance’s uniquely beautiful history in a new and dynamically compelling context, not by stripping the form of its tradition, but by pushing it: rhythmically, aesthetically and conceptually. Street, club and experimental dance forms – all of which are American dreams – awake to the sound of furious rhythms and find their boundaries missing. Tap dance, America’s most long-standing indigenous jazz vernacular, is here to receive its due.
