A HISTORY OF GIVING Equity Fights AIDS was founded in October 1987 by the Council of Actors’ Equity Association. Money raised through the efforts of Equity theatre companies across the country was specifically earmarked for The Actors Fund’s AIDS Initiative. 2010

2011

Broadway Cares was founded in February 1988 by members of The Producers’ Group. Money raised was earmarked to be awarded to AIDS service organizations nationwide, including Equity Fights AIDS. In May 1992, Equity Fights AIDS and Broadway Cares merged to become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The Board of Trustees of this newly established not-for-profit fundraising organization assumed the missions of the previously separate organizations and continues to fund the social service work of The Actors Fund and award grants three times a year to AIDS service organizations nationwide. Unlike most other nonprofit, grant-making organizations, Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS must raise every single dollar of our philanthropic budget every year in order to fulfill our mission. In turn, BC/EFA works hard to ensure that the money we raise is spent carefully and wisely on programs where these hard-earned funds can have the maximum possible impact.

Dear Friends: Welcome to the 30th Annual Easter Bonnet Competition, the culmination of our six-week spring fundraising campaign and a delightful afternoon of entertainment in which to reflect, remember and reinvigorate ourselves and each other. This glorious celebration started simply, backstage at the Palace Theatre with the original cast of La Cage aux Folles. Much has happened to us and to our world since that first, 20-minute-long presentation. Most importantly, perhaps, in the years since, the Easter Bonnet Competition has raised $63 million, a number that will grow impressively when this year’s fundraising total is announced at the conclusion of Tuesday’s show. Thanks to your help and support, the funds raised through the Easter Bonnet Competition and all year-round help hundreds of thousands of men, women and children right here in New York City and across the country. Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS continues to be the single largest financial supporter of The Actors Fund, providing $5.2 million last year. Through its safety net of social services, The Fund helps men and women onstage, backstage and throughout the entertainment community by providing a safe place to turn when they’re in need, crisis or transition. Your support also allows Broadway Cares to help more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, reaching hundreds of thousands of men, women and children who desperately need a helping hand. Earlier this year, Broadway Cares distributed more than $1.8 million to 118 food pantries, congregate meal and meal delivery programs across the country. Just last month, BC/EFA awarded $842,500 to 45 national AIDS service and advocacy organizations. This summer, the largest of our three grant rounds will provide much-needed support to health clinics, emergency financial assistance services, substance abuse and harm reduction organizations and quality of life programs. Since 1988 more than $89 million have been put to very good work across the country. Your efforts over the last few weeks – and your presence here today – will help provide lifesaving medications, counseling services, groceries and home-delivered meals, transportation to and from essential appointments, supportive housing and more. Whether you are part of our theatrical family, a volunteer, a member of Broadway Cares’ Angels Circle, a corporate sponsor or a theatre-loving ticket buyer, your commitment and generosity of spirit radiates well beyond the fun we have this afternoon. Thank you for helping us prove, every day, that what we do together makes a difference. Sincerely,

Tom Viola Executive Director

A BIT OF BONNET HISTORY The precursor to the Easter Bonnet Competition was an informal show in 1986 initiated by wardrobe supervisor Gayle Patton called “The Queen of Hearts.” It took place backstage at the Palace Theatre where the original La Cage aux Folles was a smash hit. Individual cast members from La Cage were judged on poise, personality and talent with the rest of the company voting by putting dollar bills in a jar for each contestant. The effort raised $1,200 for the National AIDS Fund. The event was so much fun for the La Cage company that the following year, Gayle suggested an “Easter Bonnet Competition.” Other Broadway companies were invited to participate. Fundraising ideas flourished, bonnets became more elaborate, stars joined in as presenters and performers and by 1990 – when it was presented on stage at the Majestic Theatre – the Easter Bonnet Competition had become the Broadway community’s premier AIDS fundraising event. Produced by Suzanne Ishee and a host of dedicated coordinators and volunteers for its first eight years, the Easter Bonnet returned to the Palace Theatre in 1995, produced for the first time by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. In 1998, the show moved to the New Amsterdam Theatre where for nine years it felt as much at home as the peacocks that decorate the theatre’s ornate interior. In 2007, the event followed The Lion King to the Minskoff Theatre.

Today we present the 30th edition. Broadway Cares is deeply grateful to all who, over the years, have made this event into a wildly successful fundraiser and a yearly celebration of the theatre community’s commitment to those facing the challenges of AIDS and other health-related emergencies. broadwaycares.org

Over the course of six weeks of audience appeals, volunteers filled 3,526 shifts at 1,025 appeals. Our sincere thanks to these unsung heroes: BC/EFA’s famous bucket brigade! GRANTS Much-Needed Meals Delivered Coast-to-Coast

In 1985, a grandmother and retired food-service worker in San Francisco named Ruth Brinker saw the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic through the eyes of friends and neighbors. After watching a close friend with AIDS suffer from malnutrition, Brinker began fixing meals in her kitchen for seven neighbors with AIDS. And with this, Project Open Hand was born. Today, Project Open Hand prepares 2,500 nutritious meals and provides 200 bags of healthy groceries every day to help sustain clients who battle serious health challenges. Project Open Hand is just one of 118 food service organizations that received grants from Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS in January. A record total of $1,850,000 was awarded to food pantries, congregate meal and meal delivery programs in 36 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico in this first of three annual grant rounds. Ensuring that a person who’s sick gets a nutritious meal is a fundamental part of Broadway Cares’ mission. For the people receiving the benefits of these grants, a healthy meal can often save their life. A medically tailored diet helps HIV-positive clients recover, heal and lead a higher quality of life. A decent meal can be the first line of defense, the road back to health and recovery. Food For Life Network in Miami is among the organizations that depend on this annual funding. More than 90 percent of the program’s HIV/AIDS clients represent minorities and are among the poorest and sickest of Miami’s residents. Founded in 1987 by a group of individuals concerned with malnutrition of people with HIV/AIDS in their community, this meal delivery program has received $130,000 in grants from Broadway Cares since 1998. In many cases, organizations supported by Broadway Cares are the only HIV/AIDS services providers in their geographic area. Shepherd Wellness Community in Pittsburgh solely serves HIV-positive people from the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and 11 surrounding counties since 1987. Broadway Cares has been providing steady support since 1995, awarding $200,000 to the organization’s HIV/AIDS Wellness Dinner Program. “Shepherd Wellness Community gave me my life back,” said John, a client of the organization. “Before I started coming to the dinners I was alone and depressed. Now I have a wonderful group of friends who are always there to help me. I really think it saved my life.”

INTERNATIONAL GRANTS Help for South African Organizations Tops $4.2 Million Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS surpassed the $3.9 million mark in grants to South African HIV/AIDS organizations – including $155,000 awarded earlier this year – thanks to the tireless fundraising efforts of Disney’s acclaimed production of The Lion King. In recognition of this extraordinary fundraising and in honor of the South African company members who have joined their American cast mates in these efforts, BC/EFA has sent more than 50 percent of the monies raised by The Lion King companies to AIDS and family service organizations in South Africa, a country beset with the highest HIV/AIDS rates in the world.
