A History of Giving Equity Fights AIDS was founded in October 1987 by the Council of Actors’ Equity Association. Money raised through the efforts of Equity theatre companies across the country was specifically earmarked for The Actors Fund’s AIDS Initiative. 2008

2009

Broadway Cares was founded in February 1988 by members of The Producers’ Group. Money raised was earmarked to be awarded to AIDS service organizations nationwide, including Equity Fights AIDS. In May 1992, Equity Fights AIDS and Broadway Cares merged to become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The Board of Trustees of this newly established not-for-profit fundraising organization assumed the missions of the previously separate organizations and continues to fund the social service work of The Actors Fund and award grants three times a year to AIDS service organizations nationwide. Unlike most other nonprofit, grant-making organizations, Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS must raise every single dollar of our philanthropic budget every year in order to fulfill our mission. In turn, BC/EFA works hard to ensure that the money we raise is spent carefully and wisely on programs where these hard-earned funds can have the maximum possible impact.

A Bit of “Gypsy” History The first Gypsy of the Year Competition was held at the St. James Theatre on Tuesday, November 28, 1989. Hosted by Jonathan Hadary, Tyne Daly and the company of Gypsy, this fledgling event – produced by Maria Di Dia and Tom Viola and directed by Michael Lichtefeld – raised more than $64,000 and featured gypsies from the companies of A Chorus Line, Black & Blue, Cats, Grand Hotel, Gypsy, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Sweeney Todd, The Heidi Chronicles, Three Penny Opera and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom/The Lady in Question. In the following years – with your help – Gypsy of the Year grew. 1989

24 Gypsy of the Year Competitions = $52,934,581 Today, we stage the 25th. We are deeply grateful to all who, over the last 24 years, have made this event a wildly successful fundraiser and a yearly celebration of the theatre community’s commitment to those facing the challenges of AIDS and other health-related emergencies. You are the heart, soul and muscle of BC/EFA. Your efforts enable BC/EFA to continue to offer essential assistance to individuals in the entertainment industry and to hundreds of AIDS service organizations that serve people with HIV/AIDS and their families nationwide. On behalf of those we assist, thank you. broadwaycares.org

December 2013 Dear Friends: Welcome! It is hard to believe that today we celebrate the 25th edition of Gypsy of the Year. Thank you for joining us for this special afternoon with friends, supporters, colleagues and fellow theatre lovers. The first Gypsy of the Year, back on November 28, 1989, was a much different event than the one you will see today. A very simple flyer posted backstage the week before that first fledgling performance at the St. James Theatre asked simply, “Who will be Gypsy of the Year?” With 12 shows participating, Jonathan Hadary hosted the late afternoon performance, which featured a special welcome from Tyne Daly, who was starring with Jonathan in the acclaimed revival of Gypsy. Their Gypsy had just opened at the St. James on November 16. The first Gypsy of the Year featured a cast of 19 and raised $70,000. We were thrilled! Last year, in a show presented at the New Amsterdam Theatre with a cast of more than 250, 51 Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring shows raised $3,902,608. We were pretty happy about that one, too. Since 1989, the 24 Gypsy of the Year competitions thus far have raised more than $52.9 million for the essential programs of The Actors Fund and more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations nationwide. With today’s 25th annual event we look to break the $56 million mark. Much of that is raised a dollar at a time in thousands of red buckets held by company members and volunteers alike in the lobbies of hundreds of theatres on Broadway, Off-Broadway and across the country on the road. On days like this, I’m particularly reminded how fortunate we are and how everything we do – down to the smallest tasks – relies upon the generosity of so many. Broadway Cares simply wouldn’t be able to touch the lives of hundreds of thousands across the country without the tireless and talented efforts of those onstage and behind the scenes, as well as the dedication, year after year, from donors and supporters who continue to open their hearts and renew their commitment to our efforts. Today we honor and embrace that dedication and devotion. One of the most inspiring qualities of the theatre community is its willingness and determination to step up for the most vulnerable among us. Whether it’s for colleagues in need of assistance, a neighbor recently diagnosed with HIV or a family struggling to provide healthy meals, we must maintain our commitment to those who depend on BC/EFA’s sustained support. Your efforts over the past few weeks – and your presence today – will buy lifesaving medications, fund counseling services, keep the doors of a health clinic open, provide transportation to a doctor’s appointment, recovery meeting or job training, keep the engines of the trucks delivering meals to the homebound humming and stock the shelves of a food pantry with the ingredients necessary for nutritious meals for those living with HIV/AIDS and other serious illnesses. Because of you there is hope and essential human services for many who have been pushed to the margins of society, find themselves struggling in an uncertain environment or simply need some assistance to take charge of their lives once again.

Whether you are part of our theatrical family, a volunteer, a member of Broadway Cares’ Angels Circle, a corporate sponsor, a theatre-loving ticket buyer or just a pal of any one of us, your commitment radiates well beyond the fun we have this afternoon. Thank you for continuing to stand side by side with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, one donor, one event and one dollar at a time. It is the passion, creativity and commitment of each of you that ensures that we will, together, continue to make a difference. Take a look at that flyer. That is quite “a mustard seed.” Sincerely,

Tom Viola Executive Director

Collection Volunteers Every night they fanned out across the theatre district, quietly sliding into place just after the curtain call. A team of 172 tireless volunteers and BC/EFA staffers joined company members from participating shows to help ensure a successful Gypsy of the Year fundraising season. As the house lights came up, they held buckets and sold autographed memorabilia at 25 Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. Over the course of the six weeks of audience appeals, volunteers filled 2,887 shifts at 907 appeals. Our sincere thanks to our dedicated volunteers: BC/EFA’s famed bucket brigade! Since 1996, BC/EFA has awarded $5.4 million in special grants to AIDS service organizations outside the United States in appreciation of the fundraising done for BC/EFA by those Broadway companies with a distinct affiliation with a foreign country. The following are members of The Angels Circle as of December 1, 2013. Names in bold indicate Broadway Cares Archangels, donors who increased their gift by 25 percent or more over the previous year. Members of The Angels Circle include individuals, family foundations and corporations. Contributions are unrestricted and not related to event or merchandise purchases. On behalf of our volunteers, staff, Board of Trustees and the many men, women and children with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses who count on Broadway Cares for assistance, we salute these donors. In appreciation of an annual contribution of $1,000 or more, Angels receive VIP status at some of Broadway Cares’ most high-profile events, including Gypsy of the Year and the Easter Bonnet Competition, as well as a host of other exciting benefits. There are many ways to become a member of The Angels Circle. You can join as an individual, a couple, a family or even as part of a group of friends, co-workers, fan club or sports league. You can charge your membership on a monthly or quarterly basis. In addition, if your employer matches charitable contributions, a gift of $500 or more can qualify you for membership at the $1,000 level.
