A History of Giving Equity Fights AIDS was founded in October 1987 by the Council of Actors’ Equity Association. Money raised through the efforts of Equity theatre companies across the country was specifically earmarked for The Actors Fund’s AIDS Initiative. 2008
2009
Broadway Cares was founded in February 1988 by members of The Producers’ Group. Money raised was earmarked to be awarded to AIDS service organizations nationwide, including Equity Fights AIDS. In May 1992, Equity Fights AIDS and Broadway Cares merged to become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The Board of Trustees of this newly established not-for-profit fundraising organization assumed the missions of the previously separate organizations and continues to fund the social service work of The Actors Fund and award grants three times a year to AIDS service organizations nationwide. Unlike most other nonprofit, grant-making organizations, Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS must raise every single dollar of our philanthropic budget every year in order to fulfill our mission. In turn, BC/EFA works hard to ensure that the money we raise is spent carefully and wisely on programs where these hard-earned funds can have the maximum possible impact.

25 Gypsy of the Year Competitions = $57,277,815 Today, we stage the 26th. We are deeply grateful to all who, over the last 25 years, have made this event a wildly successful fundraiser and a yearly celebration of the theatre community’s commitment to those facing the challenges of AIDS and other health-related emergencies. You are the heart, soul and muscle of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Your efforts enable BC/EFA to continue to offer essential assistance to individuals in the entertainment industry and to hundreds of AIDS service organizations that serve people with HIV/AIDS and their families nationwide. On behalf of those we assist, thank you. broadwaycares.org
December 2014 Dear Friends: Thank you for joining us for the 26th annual edition of Gypsy of the Year. Today, we celebrate our combined efforts that so importantly help friends and colleagues, as well as those in need across the country. It is your creativity and collaboration that has kept the work of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS vibrant and thriving for so many years. In the last six weeks, each dollar in a red bucket and every poster and Playbill signed and sold means that someone will receive a healthy meal, pay for their prescriptions or receive a bus pass to travel to doctors’ appointments. The ingenuity of our community has created unique ways to raise support, from aprons and autographed invitations to backstage selfies and (quite literally) the shirts off of your back. Each time someone stayed after a performance to help an actor out of their mic pack, to give a backstage tour or to play the show’s exit music, they contributed their support and made our work possible. In 2014, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS was able to provide a record-high $4.6 million grant to the essential social service programs at The Actors Fund, including the Artists Health Insurance Resource Center. With its singular mission of ensuring that every artist in the U.S. has access to affordable health care, AHIRC is positioned to help those in our industry understand the Affordable Care Act, its opportunities and its implications. Thanks to you, BC/EFA was able to provide $500,000 in support for AHIRC this year, contributing toward a grand total of $73 million in support for The Actors Fund since 1988. Beyond the theatre community, Broadway Cares awarded $5.7 million this year to service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. These grants – made to health clinics, food and meal delivery programs, counseling centers and social service organizations – ensure that services in my hometown of Pittsburgh and in your hometowns across the country are able to continue providing help to those who need it most. Whether you are a theatre performer or part of the backstage crew, a front-of-house staffer or simply a theatre lover, your support allows the generosity of Broadway Cares to reach far beyond the walls here at the beautiful New Amsterdam Theatre to every corner of the country, and beyond. Thank for continuing to work together to make a difference, Sincerely,
Tom Viola Executive Director

Collection Volunteers An army of 210 tireless volunteers and BC/EFA staffers enhanced the Gypsy of the Year fundraising efforts this season. They held buckets and sold autographed memorabilia in the lobbies of Broadway and Off-Broadway theatres alongside company members of participating shows. Over the course of six weeks of audience appeals, volunteers filled 3,778 shifts at 1,225 appeals. Our sincere thanks to these unsung heroes: BC/EFA’s famed bucket brigade!

Colleen Dewhurst Society
Leaving a Legacy of Hope and Help Throughout his 88 years of life, Father Richard Mietzelfeld made a difference for others – through his spiritual guidance, in his college classrooms and by inviting friends to escape the day’s stresses at his cozy hilltop retreat tucked into the side of Potter Mountain in Massachusetts. But Father Richard also made sure that after he passed his legacy would have a lasting impact, too. He included a stipulation in his will that a significant portion of his estate be left to an organization devoted to helping people living with AIDS. “Father Richard felt deeply for those suffering from AIDS and wished to ease, in some way, their pain,” said Ellen Raspitha, a longtime friend of Father Richard’s and the executor of his estate. After an extensive review, Raspitha determined that Broadway Cares should be the recipient of Father Richard’s magnanimous gift, making him a member of the Colleen Dewhurst Society, BC/EFA’s planned giving program. His generosity will help, for years to come, hundreds of thousands in three states so dear to Father Richard – Connecticut, Florida and Massachusetts – and at more than 450 AIDS and family organizations nationwide. Brooklyn-born Father Richard, a former rector of Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, CT., was a priest for 58 years before retiring to Clearwater, FL. He passed away in August 2013. Broadway Cares learned of his gift this fall. Father Richard’s life was full of music. He once said, “music enriches the spiritual life and deepens the life of prayer.” He and his friends would spend hours listening to music while discussing art, politics or the latest news. His home even featured floorto-ceiling bookcases for his music collection, which included more than 10,000 CDs and 18,000 LPs that he donated later in his life to Amherst College. “Father Richard found a connection with everyone he met and wanted to know everyone’s back story and what made them tick,” Raspitha said. “Knowing that his life’s efforts are going to have such a long-lasting impact on so many people in need, I’m sure he’s just beaming right now.”
