A History of Giving Equity Fights AIDS was founded in October 1987 by the Council of Actors’ Equity Association. Money raised through the efforts of Equity theatre companies across the country was specifically earmarked for The Actors Fund’s AIDS Initiative. 2009
Broadway Cares was founded in February 1988 by members of The Producers’ Group. Money raised was earmarked to be awarded to AIDS service organizations nationwide, including Equity Fights AIDS. In May 1992, Equity Fights AIDS and Broadway Cares merged to become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The Board of Trustees of this newly established not-for-profit fundraising organization assumed the missions of the previously separate organizations and continues to fund the social service work of The Actors Fund and award grants three times a year to AIDS service organizations nationwide.
2010
Unlike most other nonprofit, grant-making organizations, Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS must raise every single dollar of our philanthropic budget every year in order to fulfill our mission. In turn, BC/EFA works hard to ensure that the money we raise is spent carefully and wisely on programs where these hard-earned funds can have the maximum possible impact.

December 2015 Dear Friends: Thank you for joining us for the 27th annual edition of Gypsy of the Year. Today, we celebrate our combined efforts to help friends, co-workers and colleagues, as well as those in need across the country. This year’s Gypsy of the Year artwork, as seen on the cover of this Playbill, is particularly special to me. It combines photos of 593 members of our theatrical community. The mosaic is made of images of actors, directors, stage managers, crew, musicians, choreographers, designers, front-of-house staff and backstage personnel. They all represent the thousands in New York and on tour who are integral in making possible the fall fundraising campaign leading up to today’s Gypsy of the Year and the work we do together all year. Today’s production is a celebration of that community and its creative spirit. Your ingenuity has created unique ways to raise support, from one-of-a kind aprons and autographed props to backstage selfies and signed show posters and Playbills. Each time someone stayed after a performance to help actors out of their mic packs, to give a backstage tour or to play the show’s exit music, they contributed their support and made our work possible. Today also is a celebration of our community’s good work being shared across the country. In 2015, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS provided a record $5.2 million for the essential social service programs at The Actors Fund. Your generosity of spirit helps provide colleagues with advocacy and advice to navigate the bureaucracy of maintaining health care coverage provided by union employment, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. It helps provide free mammograms, cancer screenings and flu shots. And it supports essential social services, including supportive housing, group therapy and counseling. Beyond the theatre community, Broadway Cares awarded $6.2 million this year to HIV/AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. These grants – made to health clinics, food and meal delivery programs, counseling centers and social service programs – ensure that services in my hometown of Pittsburgh and in your hometowns across the country are able to continue providing help to those who need it most and lack the resources or good fortune we enjoy. Whether you join us onstage, backstage or behind the scenes, from the vantage of a producer’s office, union or guild, a major donor or volunteer, a new friend or someone who has been with us since this all first began, or are simply someone who loves the theatre and those who call it home, your support allows the generosity of Broadway Cares to reach far beyond this beautiful New Amsterdam Theatre, across the city, to every corner of the country and beyond. Thank you for being a member of our community. What we do together makes a difference. Sincerely,
Tom Viola Executive Director
A Bit of “Gypsy” History The first Gypsy of the Year Competition was held at the St. James Theatre on November 28, 1989. Hosted by Jonathan Hadary, Tyne Daly and the company of Gypsy, this fledgling event – produced by Maria Di Dia and Tom Viola and directed by Michael Lichtefeld – raised more than $64,000 and featured gypsies from the companies of A Chorus Line, Black & Blue, Cats, Grand Hotel, Gypsy, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Sweeney Todd, The Heidi Chronicles, Three Penny Opera and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom/The Lady in Question. In the following years – with your help – Gypsy of the Year grew. 1989

Grants Increasing Infection Rates, Further Federal Cuts Heighten Need for Help The numbers can be staggering. Twenty-seven percent of clients receiving care through AIDS Resource Center Ohio do not have health insurance. At RAIN Oklahoma, social workers saw 25 newly diagnosed HIV clients in one month alone, all of them younger than 28. In the tiny town of Austin, IN, the incidence of HIV was higher earlier this year than in any country in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The stories behind those numbers can be heartbreaking. “My medication is $3,185 for a 30-day supply,” said Kevin, who turned to RAIN Oklahoma in Oklahoma City for support. “If you don’t have an HIV drug assistance program, you don’t have a chance for survival. If I didn’t have that help, I wouldn’t be here today.” The continuing reduction in federal and state funding for social service programs, coupled with an increase in the number of people living with HIV complicates the ability of HIV/AIDS service organizations to provide timely and effective responses to the needs of their clients. Thanks to the generosity of the American theatre community and thousands more major donors and supporters across the country, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS awarded more in grants this year than ever before: $6.2 million to 459 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. The record level of funding comes at times when it’s desperately needed. For many clients of the organizations Broadway Cares helps, continued cuts in government and foundation funding means not just reductions in support for lifesaving medication, but also increased hardship in accessing counseling and transportation, difficulty paying rent and more. David, a client of AIDS Resource Center Ohio, was diagnosed with AIDS 15 years ago. Once the owner of a thriving small business, David now faces the daily financial dilemma of choosing whether to pay for his medication, food or keeping the lights on. “I would never have thought I would be in the position to need help paying an electricity bill, but I am,” David said. “Thanks to ARC Ohio’s help, I’m able to pay that bill and that helps take some of the stress off me.”

Theatre Authority Acknowledgement We wish to express our gratitude to the performers’ unions – Actors’ Equity Association, American Guild of Musical Artists, American Guild of Variety Artists and SAG-AFTRA – through Theatre Authority Inc. for their cooperation in permitting the artists to appear in this program.
Collection Volunteers An army of 160 tireless volunteers and BC/EFA staffers enhanced the Gypsy of the Year fundraising efforts this season. They held buckets and sold autographed memorabilia in the lobbies of Broadway and Off-Broadway theatres alongside company members of participating shows. Over the course of six weeks of audience appeals, volunteers filled 3,126 shifts at 785 appeals. Our sincere thanks to these unsung heroes: BC/EFA’s famed bucket brigade!

International
Grants Since 1996, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS has awarded nearly $6 million in special grants to HIV/AIDS service organizations outside the United States in appreciation of the fundraising done for BC/EFA by those Broadway companies with a distinct international affiliation. The first of these donations was a $5,000 grant given to West End Cares in London in honor of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream after the company participated in the 1996 Easter Bonnet Competition. Since then, grants have been made in honor of dozens of actors and productions from around the world who have generously given of their time and talent to support Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Recipients have included TheatreMAD in London, The Actors’ Fund of Canada and The Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research. More than $4 million has been awarded to 59 organizations in South Africa in honor of the South African actors in The Lion King on Broadway and in national tours. Early this year, Sting and the cast of Broadway’s The Last Ship celebrated a $10,000 donation from Broadway Cares in support of the Wallsend Boys Club, a community center in Sting’s hometown of Newcastle, England. As Hugh Jackman concluded his most recent Broadway run in The River, Broadway Cares recognized his and the cast’s extraordinary efforts. During their six weeks of fundraising, the company of The River raised an astonishing $1,045,990. In appreciation, BC/EFA awarded grants to several organizations with close ties to the cast, including Oz Showbiz Cares/Equity Fights AIDS in Australia, Clean Break and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust in London, and the Make Change for Children Campaign of the Joint Council of International Children Services.
