A HISTORY OF GIVING Equity Fights AIDS was founded in October 1987 by the Council of Actors’ Equity Association. Money raised through the efforts of Equity theatre companies across the country was specifically earmarked for The Actors Fund’s AIDS Initiative. 2010

Broadway Cares was founded in February 1988 by members of The Producers’ Group. Money raised was earmarked to be awarded to AIDS service organizations nationwide, including Equity Fights AIDS. In May 1992, Equity Fights AIDS and Broadway Cares merged to become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The Board of Trustees of this newly established not-for-profit fundraising organization assumed the missions of the previously separate organizations and continues to fund the social service work of The Actors Fund and award grants three times a year to AIDS service organizations nationwide.

2011

Unlike most other nonprofit, grant-making organizations, Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS must raise every single dollar of our philanthropic budget every year in order to fulfill our mission. In turn, BC/EFA works hard to ensure that the money we raise is spent carefully and wisely on programs where these hard-earned funds can have the maximum possible impact.

December 2016 Dear Friends: Thank you for joining us for the 28th edition of the Gypsy of the Year Competition. We are grateful for the fundraising efforts of the Broadway community these six weeks, and excited to celebrate our collective success through this afternoon’s memorable performances. It is more important than ever that we gather here today, together, singularly focused and united. It is more important than ever that we revel in our diverse community of actors, stage managers, musicians, crew members, directors, choreographers, designers and front-of-house staffers; of donors, supporters, friends and family. Energized by your stalwart support, we have never been more committed in our fight for those whose voices have been silenced or marginalized. We will not allow fear or hate to impede the progress we have made. Lives depend on that. Gypsy of the Year honors the people who use their craft and talents, expend their energies and give their time to help the greater good. They’ve volunteered to perform in today’s show, held red buckets in theatre lobbies, signed posters and Playbills on behalf of Broadway Cares and inspired theatregoers to give back. Today, like every day, Americans of every gender, ethnicity, religion, orientation, identity, ability and economic status will turn to social service organizations across the country and The Actors Fund for a much-needed hand up and supportive shoulder. This year, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS awarded a record-breaking $5.6 million to the essential social service programs of The Actors Fund, supporting entertainment professionals in times of need, crisis or transition, when effective health care coverage is never guaranteed. Broadway Cares also granted $6.6 million to HIV/AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. These grants provide health care services, lifesaving medication, nutritious meals, counseling and more to people across the country and across the street. Whether you’re onstage, offstage or backstage, whether you’re a major donor or a dedicated volunteer, whether you’ve supported Broadway Cares from our humble beginnings or are a new addition to our family, know that you are appreciated. Your love of theatre, passion for helping others and desire to effect change is what allows Broadway Cares to touch so many lives every day. Our friends Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, stars of Oh, Hello on Broadway, have said it best every night these last six weeks: “Throughout the country right now, many of the most vulnerable are scared about their rights and access to social services and much more. Your support of Broadway Cares helps so many in need now and in the future.” Our work has never been more important. And today, perhaps more than ever, what we do together makes a difference. Sincerely, Tom Viola Executive Director

A BIT OF "GYPSY" HISTORY The first Gypsy of the Year Competition was held at the St. James Theatre on November 28, 1989. Hosted by Jonathan Hadary, Tyne Daly and the company of Gypsy, this fledgling event – produced by Maria Di Dia and Tom Viola and directed by Michael Lichtefeld – raised more than $64,000 and featured gypsies from the companies of A Chorus Line, Black & Blue, Cats, Grand Hotel, Gypsy, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Sweeney Todd, The Heidi Chronicles, Three Penny Opera and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom/The Lady in Question. In the following years – with your help – Gypsy of the Year grew. 1989

NATIONAL GRANTS Organizations Nationwide Give Hope to People in Need In Manhattan’s diverse neighborhood of Harlem, the incidence of HIV/AIDS is staggering. With limited access to quality care, education and treatment, the rate of infection is five times the national average and HIV-positive people in Harlem are 50 percent more likely to die than in Manhattan as a whole. “I was at my lowest when I was first diagnosed,” said Fayetta, who turned to Harlem United Community AIDS Center for support. “Now, thanks to Harlem United, I went from living on the streets and scraping the pavement to having a place to sleep at night and recovering.”

Broadway Cares awarded a record-breaking $6.6 million this year to 462 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, DC. These grants, to organizations like Harlem United, give hope, opportunity and empowerment to those in need across the country. Valentine was living in California when he was first diagnosed with HIV. He assumed his life in music would become a casualty of his status. “I had lost a bunch of weight,” Valentine said. “Friends and family were visiting and it felt like they were paying their last respects.” After moving to Coeur d’Alene, ID, Valentine sought help from the North Idaho AIDS Coalition, another organization helped by Broadway Cares’ support. Once he regained his strength and the mentorship to fuel his self worth, he was able to rekindle his love of music. He now channels his emotional journey into his songwriting. “My diagnosis impacted my spirit,” Valentine said. “My music is emotional and those emotions come from my spirit. I feel like I was given the chance to start over. I may have old experiences that determine my path, but I am so thankful for this new life I get to live.” With support and encouragement from the HIV/AIDS and family service organizations Broadway Cares awards grants to, the most vulnerable among us are given a newfound sense of hope and purpose. “I choose to think of this virus as a blessing,” Fayetta said. “I have the right medication and it’s working. I’m living to see my grandchildren become adults; they’re 19 and 17. I never thought I’d get this far.”

BUCKET BRIGADE VOLUNTEERS An army of 155 tireless volunteers and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS staffers enhanced the Gypsy of the Year fundraising efforts this season. They held buckets and sold autographed memorabilia in the lobbies of Broadway and Off-Broadway theatres alongside company members of participating shows. Over the course of six weeks of audience appeals, volunteers filled 3,492 shifts at 1,121 appeals. Our sincere thanks to these unsung heroes: Broadway Cares’ famous bucket brigade.

INTERNATIONAL

GRANTS Since 1996, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS has awarded more than $6 million in special grants to HIV/AIDS service organizations outside the United States in appreciation of the fundraising done for BC/EFA by those Broadway companies with a distinct international affiliation. The first of these donations was a $5,000 grant given to West End Cares in London in honor of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream after the company participated in the 1996 Easter Bonnet Competition. Since then, grants have been made in honor of dozens of actors and productions from around the world who have generously given of their time and talent to support Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Recipients have included TheatreMAD in London, The Actors’ Fund of Canada and The Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research. The majority of grant money distributed through our International Grants Program has been to South African AIDS service organizations in appreciation of the efforts of the South African members of the Broadway community and touring productions of The Lion King.

Since 1998, BC/EFA has sent more than $4 million to 66 South African AIDS service providers in honor of and identified by the South African actors in the Broadway and national touring companies of The Lion King. As the AIDS pandemic continues to devastate this region, funding for South African organizations will remain a funding priority for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
