A History of Giving Equity Fights AIDS was founded in October 1987 by the Council of Actors’ Equity Association. Money raised through the efforts of Equity theatre companies across the country was specifically earmarked for The Actors Fund’s AIDS Initiative. 2007

2008

Broadway Cares was founded in February 1988 by members of The Producers’ Group. Money raised was earmarked to be awarded to AIDS service organizations nationwide, including Equity Fights AIDS. In May 1992, Equity Fights AIDS and Broadway Cares merged to become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The Board of Trustees of this newly established not-for-profit fundraising organization assumed the missions of the previously separate organizations and continues to fund the social service work of The Actors Fund and award grants three times a year to AIDS service organizations nationwide. Unlike most other nonprofit, grant-making organizations, Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS must raise every single dollar of our philanthropic budget every year in order to fulfill our mission. In turn, BC/EFA works hard to ensure that the money we raise is spent carefully and wisely on programs where these hard-earned funds can have the maximum possible impact.

December 2012

Dear Friends: Welcome to Gypsy of the Year. Whether it’s your first time or you’ve been with us for all 24 editions, there are few things more special than gathering with friends, colleagues and fellow theatre lovers to celebrate what we all love. That’s what afternoons like this are all about. We’ve been gathering to honor the “gypsies” of Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring companies since 1989, collectively raising more than $49 million for the essential programs of The Actors Fund and more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations nationwide. One of the most inspiring qualities of our community is its willingness and determination to step up for those among us most in need of help – whether it’s for colleagues within the theatre community in need of assistance, a neighbor living with HIV/AIDS, families without healthy meals or, as we saw just a few weeks ago, responding to the devastation of a natural disaster. Hurricane Sandy tested our collective resolve. The storm dealt a stinging blow to millions of people in a dozen states, particularly here in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Because of your donations and hard work, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS was able to make an emergency $100,000 grant to The Actors Fund and $150,000 in donations to three relief agencies – the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, AmeriCares and the American Red Cross – all committed to immediately helping storm victims. It will make a difference in the lives of many of our friends and co-workers as well as so many in the tri-state area facing the terrible aftermath of this historic storm. At the same time we must also maintain our commitment to thousands in the entertainment industry and hundreds of thousands across the country who depend on BC/EFA’s sustained support. Your efforts over the past few weeks – and your presence today – will help buy medicines, fund counseling services, keep the doors of a health clinic open and provide healthy and nutritious meals for those who might otherwise do without. Because of you there is hope and essential human services for many who have been pushed to the margins of society, find themselves struggling in an uncertain environment or simply need some assistance to take charge of their lives once again. Whether you are in the theatrical community, a volunteer, a member of Broadway Cares’ Angels Circle, a corporate sponsor or a theatre-loving ticket buyer, your commitment radiates well beyond the fun we have this afternoon. Your generosity and support are BC/EFA’s greatest blessing. It is a rare and invaluable resource; one we steward with great appreciation and care. With that commitment and collaboration in mind, what we do together will indeed continue to make a difference. Sincerely,

Tom Viola Executive Director

A Bit of “Gypsy” History The first Gypsy of the Year Competition was held at the St. James Theatre on Tuesday, November 28, 1989. Hosted by Jonathan Hadary, Tyne Daly and the company of Gypsy, this fledgling event – produced by Maria Di Dia and Tom Viola and directed by Michael Lichtefeld – raised over $64,000 and featured gypsies from the companies of A Chorus Line, Black & Blue, Cats, Grand Hotel, Gypsy, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Sweeney Todd, The Heidi Chronicles, Three Penny Opera and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom/The Lady in Question. In the following years – with your help – Gypsy of the Year grew. 1989

We are deeply grateful to all who, over the last 23 years, have made this event a wildly successful fundraiser and a yearly celebration of the theatre community’s commitment to those facing the challenges of AIDS and other health-related emergencies. Fred Ebb’s Legacy Lives Through Annual Donation W

hen award-winning lyricist Fred Ebb died unexpectedly more than eight years ago, he left a void in musical theatre that can’t be replaced. His gifts to Broadway, though, reach far beyond his genius with composer John Kander in shows like Chicago, Cabaret and Curtains. As a stipulation in his will, Ebb generously left Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS his share of royalties earned on his collective works – a donation that in 2012 totals $1.3 million. In 2005, Mitchell Bernard, Ebb’s nephew and executor, presented Broadway Cares with the first “royalty check” for $300,000. The grand total from the Fred Ebb Foundation so far is an astonishing $6,950,000.

In accordance with Ebb’s wishes, the annual donation enables Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS to expand its essential funding for key programs of The Actors Fund. In large part due to Ebb’s generosity, BC/EFA’s support of social service programs like the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative, the Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic and The Dancers’ Resource, has grown from $3.5 million in 2005 to more than $4.6 million this year. “It was Fred’s wish that this money be used to expand our support for those he so loved – his friends and colleagues in the theatre community,” BC/EFA Executive Director Tom Viola said. “Fred’s light shines on every person who is touched and assisted by the services his unique talents and creative energy make possible today and for years to come.” Ebb’s long-lasting gift doesn’t surprise those who worked with him. “Freddy was one of the most generous people I have ever known,” said theatre legend Chita Rivera, who has performed in three Kander and Ebb musicals on Broadway and won both her Tony Awards portraying Kander and Ebb characters. “He was generous with his time, knowledge and, as you see, a most important organization, which meant so much to him. His foundation represents Fred Ebb as a kind, generous person.” Two of Debra Monk’s four Tony Award nominations came from performances in Kander and Ebb musicals, Curtains and Steel Pier. “It doesn’t surprise me at all that Freddy would leave such an amazing gift,” Monk said. “It just makes sense since he was such a generous spirit. He always wanted to help people in whatever they needed.” In addition to supporting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the foundation gives The Fred Ebb Award, a $50,000 annual gift to “recognize excellence in musical theatre songwriting by a lyricist, composer or songwriting team that has not yet achieved significant commercial success.” The aim of the honor is to encourage and support new musical theatre works. The 2012 Fred Ebb Award was awarded November 26 to Sam Willmott. Previous recipients have included Jeff Blumenkrantz, John Bucchino, Steve Lutvak and Robert L. Freedman, Peter Mills, Adam Gwon, Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich, and Douglas J. Cohen.

Theatre Authority Acknowledgement We wish to express our gratitude to the Performers’ Unions – Actors’ Equity Association, American Guild of Musical Artists, American Guild of Variety Artists, SAG-AFTRA – through Theatre Authority, Inc. for their cooperation in permitting the artists to appear on this program.

Collection Volunteers Every night they fanned out across the theatre district, quietly sliding into place just after the curtain call. A team of 156 tireless volunteers and BC/EFA staffers joined company members from participating shows to help ensure a successful Gypsy of the Year fundraising season. As the house lights came up, they held buckets and sold autographed memorabilia at 19 Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. Over the course of the six weeks of audience appeals, volunteers filled 1,950 shifts at 906 appeals. Our sincere thanks to our dedicated volunteers: BC/EFA’s famed bucket brigade! “Give ’em the old Razzle dazzle . . .”

“A standing O for theater critic Ben Brantley’s staging of Broadway Musicals.” —Vanity Fair

The following are members of The Angels Circle as of September 30, 2012. Names in bold indicate Broadway Cares Archangels, donors who increased their gift by 25 percent or more over the previous year. Members of The Angels Circle include individuals, family foundations and corporations. Contributions are unrestricted and not related to event or merchandise purchases. On behalf of our volunteers, staff, Board of Trustees and the many men, women and children with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses who count on Broadway Cares for assistance, we salute these donors. In appreciation of an annual contribution of $1,000 or more, Angels receive VIP status at some of Broadway Cares’ most high-profile events, including Gypsy of the Year and the Easter Bonnet Competition, as well as a host of other exciting benefits. There are many ways to become a member of The Angels Circle. You can join as an individual, a couple, a family or even as part of a group of friends, co-workers, fan club or sports league. You can charge your membership on a monthly or quarterly basis. In addition, if your employer matches charitable contributions, a gift of $500 or more can qualify you for membership at the $1,000 level. For more information about the benefits of The Angels Circle, please contact Ryan Walls, major gifts officer, at walls@broadwaycares.org or 212.840.0770, ext. 275.
