PROGRAM J O S H U A B E A M I S H / M O V E T H EC O M PA N Y Saudade (excerpt) Choreography by Joshua Beamish Music by Hildur Gudnadottir Performed by Sean Aaron Carmon, David Norsworthy, Kevin Quinaou, Dominic Santia This performance of Saudade was made possible by generous support from Underwriter Sponsors Deborah & Charles Adelman. There is sadness, and there is saudade, a nostalgic yearning for an elusive past, which is said to be the essence of the Portuguese soul. In this tribute to the most romantic of melancholias from choreographer Joshua Beamish, six male dancers confront their existential incompleteness.
N E W Y O R K T H E AT R E B A L L E T Cross Currents Choreography by Merce Cunningham, staged by Jennifer Goggans Costumes by Merce Cunningham Music by Conlon Nancarrow Performed by Joshua Andino-Nieto, Alexis Branagan, Amanda Treiber This performance of Cross Currents was made possible by generous support from Underwriter Sponsor Mary Sharp Cronson. Cross Currents is a trio, originally danced by Merce Cunningham, Carolyn Brown and Viola Farber, on July 31, 1964, at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London. The title comes from the way the dancers’ paths frequently intersected. Cross Currents is performed in agreement with the Merce Cunningham Trust.
TAY E H D A N C E BEGIN Choreography by Sonya Tayeh Costumes by Mondo Morales Music by The Bengsons Performed by Jennifer Freeman and Chelsea Thedinga This performance of BEGIN was made possible by generous support from Major Sponsors Nina Matis & Alan Gosule. BEGIN is an excerpt from Sonya Tayeh’s full-length work you’ll still call me by name. The work was commissioned by and premiered at New York Live Arts in December 2016.
M A R T Y L AWS O N A N D A B I G A I L S I M O N Carousel (excerpt) Choreography by Rob Ashford Music by Richard Rodgers Performed by Marty Lawson and Abigail Simon This performance of Carousel was made possible by generous support from Underwriter Sponsors Thomas Schumacher & Matthew White. The piece is drawn from the lush orchestral second act dream ballet from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical Carousel.
CIRIO COLLECTIVE In the Mind: The Other Room (excerpt) Choreography by Jeffrey Cirio Costumes by Ageless Einzelganger Music: “Crash (VLSI Version)” by Monolake Performed by Isaac Akiba, Lia Cirio, Paul Craig This performance of In the Mind: The Other Room was made possible by generous support from Major Sponsors Nina Matis & Alan Gosule. In the Mind: The Other Room was inspired by a photograph Nick Knight took for Yohji Yamamoto called “Suzie Smoking,” and was created in multiple locations, influenced by the surroundings in each location.
MOMIX Daddy Long Leg Choreography by Moses Pendleton and Tim Latta Assisted by Jonathan Eden, Steven Ezra, Morgan Hulen, Felicity Jones, Cynthia Quinn, Brian Simerson Costumes by Phoebe Katzin, Moses Pendleton, Cynthia Quinn Music: “Santa Maria” by Gotan Project Performed by Gregory De Armond, Jonathan Eden and Jason Williams This performance of Daddy Long Leg was made possible by generous support from Underwriter Sponsors Duke Dang & Charles E. Rosen, in loving memory of David Panzer. A light, humorous, technically challenging piece inspired by the Argentine gaucho and American cowboy, performed by male dancers using their athletic prowess.
MANUEL VIGNOULLE – M/MOTIONS Black & White Choreography by Manuel Vignoulle Costumes by Naomi Luppescu Music by Riceboy Sleeps Performed by Rena Butler and Manuel Vignoulle Inspired by our differences, Black & White connects two individuals of different sexes, backgrounds and cultures while living in their own worlds. In their quest of self discovery, they are pushed toward each other to understand their singularities.
J O S H U A B E A M I S H / M O V E T H EC O M PA N Y Concerto Choreography by Joshua Beamish Music by Johann Sebastian Bach Performed by Joshua Beamish Concerto is both elegant and overtly sexy, fusing classical ballet vocabulary with angular contemporary isolations, with little shivers of pop video come-ons.
A LV I N A I L E Y A M E R I C A N D A N C E T H E AT E R Strange Humors Choreography by Robert Battle Music by John Mackey Costumes by Missoni, reconstructed by Jon Taylor Performed by Michael Francis McBride and Samuel Lee Roberts This performance of Strange Humors was made possible by generous support from Underwriter Sponsors Joe Baker & Stuart Thompson. Strange Humors is an eccentric, jocular display for two dancers. Composer John Mackey provides a fiery score propelled by elements of African hand drumming and Middle Eastern folk music.
