DANCERS RESPONDING TO AIDS Founded in 1991, Dancers Responding to AIDS is a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, one of the nation’s leading industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations.

DRA relies on the extraordinary compassion and efforts of the performing arts community to fund a safety net of social services for those most vulnerable among us. Funds raised by DRA and Broadway Cares provide grants to the essential programs of The Actors Fund, serving the performing arts community as well as more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states.

Through these organizations and programs, DRA and Broadway Cares help to ensure that those in need have access to lifesaving medication, health care, counseling, nutritious meals and emergency financial assistance.

Bach’s clever “Goldberg Variations” uses the same chord progression for each variation but stretches its capacity for expression with melodic variation, counterpoint and rhythmic invention. In Variations, three dancers make the composition leap from its pages, creating a new playground for interpretation.

This is a solo excerpt from Dearest Home, an interactive dance work focused on love, longing and loss, scheduled to premiere at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in May 2017. Comprised of solos and duets generated from conversations with a variety of age groups and self-identified subcultures, Dearest Home interweaves movement in its most vulnerable or intimate state with the artists’ interest in cross-cultural conversation and community action.

Featuring a late ‘60s, funky energy at the “club,” this duet explores the moves and motivation of a seductress who will pull out all the stops to win the affection of her desires. Little does she know, veterans may end up learning a thing or two from their unsuspecting prey.

Alchemy is a piece about the crucible of change. Originally a forerunner of chemistry, alchemy concerned itself with transformation. The physical transmutation of matter became an analogy for the internal alchemy of spiritual revelation. The piece mirrors the classically delineated four elements of air, fire, earth and water. Just as new growth forests are created by controlled burning, personal evolution often needs a violent catalyst to create a glimmer of enlightenment.

In this performance, the “Air” and “Fire” sections will be presented without the original projection design.

Riccardo Drigo was a rather important figure in the St. Petersburg Imperial Ballet, having conducted the premieres of Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker and the 1895 version of Swan Lake. A contributor of many isolated numbers to older ballets, he composed Le Corsaire pas de deux for Marius Petipa’s 1899 version as a spectacular vehicle for the reigning ballerina, Pierna Legnani. The ballet was re-choreographed by Vakhtang Chabukiani in the 1920s and made famous again in the 1960s by Dame Margot Fonteyn and her partner, Rudolph Nureyev.
