PROGR A M C A L E B T E I C H E R & C O M PA N Y Variations (excerpt)
Choreography by Caleb Teicher Music: “Goldberg Variations” by Johann Sebastian Bach, performed by Glenn Gould Performed by Brittany DeStefano, Caleb Teicher, Emma Wylie
This performance of Variations was made possible with generous support from Champion sponsors Nina Matis & Alan Gosule and Underwriter sponsor Mary Sharp Cronson. Bach’s clever “Goldberg Variations” uses the same chord progression for each variation but stretches its capacity for expression with melodic variation, counterpoint and rhythmic invention. In Variations, three dancers make the composition leap from its pages, creating a new playground for interpretation.
K Y L E A B R A H A M /A B R A H A M . I N . M O T I O N Dearest Home (excerpt)
Choreography by Kyle Abraham in collaboration with the dancers Performed by Connie Shiau This performance of Dearest Home was made possible with generous support from Underwriter sponsors Deborah & Charles Adelman. This is a solo excerpt from Dearest Home, an interactive dance work focused on love, longing and loss, scheduled to premiere at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in May 2017. Comprised of solos and duets generated from conversations with a variety of age groups and self-identified subcultures, Dearest Home interweaves movement in its most vulnerable or intimate state with the artists’ interest in cross-cultural conversation and community action.
NICK KENKEL Seduction Suite
Choreography by Nick Kenkel Costumes by Eric Winterling Music: “Oh Me Oh My (I’m a Fool for You Baby)” by Jim Doris, performed by Aretha Franklin; “Rock Steady” by Aretha Franklin Performed by Bahiyah Hibah and Nicholas Palmquist This performance of Seduction Suite was made possible with generous support from Underwriter sponsors Joe Baker & Stuart Thompson and Underwriter sponsors Duke Dang & Charles E. Rosen, in loving memory of David Panzer. Featuring a late ‘60s, funky energy at the “club,” this duet explores the moves and motivation of a seductress who will pull out all the stops to win the affection of her desires. Little does she know, veterans may end up learning a thing or two from their unsuspecting prey.
M ADBOOTS DAN C E For Us
Choreography and costumes by Jonathan Campbell and Austin Diaz Music: “Song” by Allen Ginsberg; “Somewhere” by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, performed by Shirley Bassey; “Over the Rainbow” by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, performed by Judy Garland Performed by Jonathan Campbell and Austin Diaz
For Us was created by Jonathan Campbell and Austin Diaz for the 2016 Fire Island Dance Festival to benefit Dancers Responding to AIDS with generous support from
Ryan Zanin & Ari Ginsburg.
In response to the tragedy in Orlando, For Us is ultimately about love. It is threaded with the hope that someday humanity will prevail and we’ll all live freely. Love will win.
JENNIFER MULLER/ THE WORKS Alchemy (excerpt)
Choreography by Jennifer Muller Costumes by Belle McIntyre and Stageworks (recycled) Music: “Damage,” “Science and Industry,” “Execution” by Andy Stott; “Blank Empire” by Kangding Ray; “Depak Ine” by John Talabot Performed by Alexandre Balmain, Sonja Chung, Seiko Fujita, Gen Hashimoto, Elise King, Elijah Laurant, Michelle Tara Lynch, Shiho Tanaka
Alchemy is a piece about the crucible of change. Originally a forerunner of chemistry, alchemy concerned itself with transformation. The physical transmutation of matter became an analogy for the internal alchemy of spiritual revelation. The piece mirrors the classically delineated four elements of air, fire, earth and water. Just as new growth forests are created by controlled burning, personal evolution often needs a violent catalyst to create a glimmer of enlightenment. In this performance, the “Air” and “Fire” sections will be presented without the original projection design.
LES BALLETS TROCK ADERO DE MONTE CARLO Pas de Deux from Le Corsaire
Choreography based on Vakhtang Chabukiani Costumes by Mike Gonzalez Music by Riccardo Drigo Performed by Laszlo Major as Araf Legupski and Long Zou as Nina Enimenimynimova
This performance of Le Corsaire was made possible with generous support from Champion sponsors Nina Matis & Alan Gosule. Riccardo Drigo was a rather important figure in the St. Petersburg Imperial Ballet, having conducted the premieres of Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker and the 1895 version of Swan Lake. A contributor of many isolated numbers to older ballets, he composed Le Corsaire pas de deux for Marius Petipa’s 1899 version as a spectacular vehicle for the reigning ballerina, Pierna Legnani. The ballet was re-choreographed by Vakhtang Chabukiani in the 1920s and made famous again in the 1960s by Dame Margot Fonteyn and her partner, Rudolph Nureyev.
D R A FA N FA R E
Composed by Philip Glass Conducted by Jonathan Sheffer Performed by EOS Orchestra
DRA Fanfare is one of Philip Glass’ favorite works and was his gift to Dancers Responding to AIDS in 1999, with generous support from Jack Schlegel.
