THEY’VE BEEN HIBERNATING BUT ARE NOW WIDE AWAKE. ONE MORE CHANCE AT THE BEST OF BROADWAY BEARS The Broadway Bears was an annual auction of one-of-a-kind, museum-quality, theatrically costumed teddy bears, each dressed in a handmade, authentic recreation of the original costume design and signed by the star who made the character famous. After a successful 15-year run, The Broadway Bears held its final auction in 2012. The event cumulatively raised a remarkable $2,048,427 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Here are three, re-gifted to us by their original winning bidders and now available to you: A. “Mrs. Lovett Bear” from Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd She made “the worst pies in London” but Mrs. Lovett surely made a splash when she pulled out a tuba and started to oom-pah along with the cast in John Doyle’s 2005 revival of Sweeney Todd. This bear first appeared in 2007 at the 10th Broadway Bears Auction. She was designed and created by Terry Sipress and is signed by Patti LuPone and Stephen Sondheim. B. “Luther Billis Bear” from South Pacific She’s a hundred and one pounds of fun. Luther Billis Bear appears in his Honey Bun costume complete with grass skirt and coconut bra. This bear made his first appearance at the second Broadway Bears auction way back in 1999. Designed by Sue M. McLaughlin, Luther is signed by original 1949 cast member William “Biff” McGuire and Danny Burstein, who appeared as Luther in the 2008 revival at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. Honeys, “put your money on our Honey Bun!” C. Savannah from Jamaica A tribute to the one and only Lena Horne, our Savannah bear comes from Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg’s 1957 musical Jamaica. Lena captivated audiences as she sang and danced the Calypso at the Imperial Theatre and this outfit beautifully recreates the designs by original costumer Miles White. This bear made her appearance in 2000 at the third annual auction and was designed by Mark Ruffin. She is signed by Miles White and the incomparable Lena Horne. OPENING BID: $300 for each
