Transocean Coatings has put together a worldwide network for special paint products for the marine and high-performance segments, among other demands from different industries

Transocean Coatings is active in the manufacture and supply of antifoulings, anticorrosives and other coatings for ships, on- and offshore installations, industrial facilities and yachts.

Transocean has a network of paint manufacturers spread over all the continents, producing its range of coatings. Transocean paints are manufactured in certified factories from where they are distributed to over 60 countries.

HISTORY

It was more than 60 years ago when Mr. Gunnar Ringstrøm, owner of a Swedish paint factory, advertised for marine paint manufacturers to join a voluntary organisation. The aim was to set up a sales network and to pool their R&D in order to compete with

other large, worldwide marine paint suppliers. Initially ten companies in European countries agreed to cooperate in the marine paint field. These paint companies were;

• A. Stelling Paint & Varnish Works

- Denmark

• Alf Bjerke A/S - Norway

• Astral Peintures - France

• BRAVA SpA. - Italy

• C. Ljungdahls Handles & Fabriks

- Sweden

• F.A.C. van der Linden & Co.

- Germany

• Molyn & Co. - Netherlands

• Paripan Ltd. - UK

• Teknos-Maalit OY - Finland

• Urruzola SA - Spain

A central headquarters was established in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and each company provided this central office with its best paint formulations and a technical committee that picked out those best suited for the business.

Subsequently, the Transocean logo, the Smiling Dolphin was designed, it can be found on the paint containers provided by the members to their customers and on all promotional material.

With registrations across the world, the Smiling Dolphin has indeed become a well-established trademark.

Over the years, with the growth of the organization, the members decided to transform the Association not only as a platform for the marine paint market but also for the offshore- and protective coatings market.

This successful transformation resulted in more value to its existing members, and certainly gave a lot to offer to potential new members too.

Nowadays, about 20 independent paint companies are part of the organization and Transocean Coatings is ranked amongst the top ten suppliers of marine- and protective paints and within the top five suppliers when it comes to the

best geographical presence. In several markets, Transocean Coatings is the market leader or within the top three.

Transocean’s central office is located in Berkel en Rodenrijs, the Netherlands. Its fully-owned premises are part of a larger industrial area

strategically located near international airports, highways and the seaport of Rotterdam. Besides offices, the location includes a modern testing lab equipped with various instruments such as cyclic corrosion testers, cathodic disbonding equipment and

QUV cabinets. Transocean coatings is financially independent and has never had mortgages or loans with banks.

As mentioned above, Transocean Coatings’ main markets are marine and protective coatings. Our products in the marine market are approved

by class and used by commercial operators as well as navies. In the protective coatings market, we offer specialized products for the oil and gas segment, onshore and offshore, as well as general steel construction and industrial facilities. Transocean

paints and systems are approved by various companies such as Petronas, Shell and YPF.

Transocean Coatings aims to strengthen our coverage in the market by focusing constantly on product development. Transocean Coatings

has a solid reputation for good quality products and above average service to customers, both commercial and technical. Transocean Coatings’ ambition is to grow our worldwide network by appointing more member companies.

Transocean Coatings

Our offer to those companies is quite simple. Once becoming part of the Transocean organization, companies are entitled to receive exclusive rights to use the knowhow of the Transocean formulations in a designated geographical area. It enables those companies to compete head-on with the multinational companies dominating the paint market.

Usually, the Transocean proposition appeals to family-owned companies who have an ambition to grow in existing or new markets with the desire to keep control of their operations. At Transocean, we can deliver just that and we have proven to enable growth for each member company. An excellent example is, for instance, Grupo Solid who joined Transocean in early 2019. From very little presence in the protective coatings market, with the Transocean

brand, over the last years and despite the Covid 19 pandemic, Grupo Solid has shown double digit sales increase in Central America. The success with the Transocean brand has prompted Grupo Solid to make Transocean a keystone in the development of the South-America market through their recent acquisition in Paraguay.

OUTLOOK

It leaves no doubt that the present market conditions regarding raw materials and energy costs present a challenge to the Transocean organization, too. However, due to our very decentralized operations, we can offer a unique concept to our customers, by enabling them access to high quality, internationally renowned products from a location nearby and delivered to them with impeccable service.
