Issue Three is here. Just like a pool popping up, issues of broken are too far apart and never enough. Too much skating going on to bother with any actual work. If you have a second, look up the Neglects on myspace from east Los Angeles, pretty sick metal. We have relocated to our new office in San Clemente once again. Some good spots this summer came and went. Got in the first skate with my son, ready to ride 11 months old. More photos, less crap, enjoy - NG

Sparks is an energy drink, one of the first such beverages also to contain alcohol. It is marketed as a “malt beverage”. Its active ingredients caffeine, taurine, and ginseng are common to energy drinks; however, its additional focus on alcohol is not. Other similar “malternatives” that also proclaim energy enhancement include 3SUM. Its packaging states a 6% alcoholic content by volume, higher than most domestic beer (commonly 3-6%). Its flavor is similar to standard energy drinks such as Red Bull, Monster, and Rockstar, with a tart, citric, sugary taste.

Fun With Sparks

Sparks currently is available in 16oz, 12oz, and 10oz silver cans with bright orange tops, with a “+” printed near the top and a “-” printed near the bottom, to give the can a battery-like appearance. A diet, or (in keeping with alcoholic beverage industry nomenclature) “Sparks Light” version, with a bright blue top, is also produced. A higher alcohol version (7.0%) called “Sparks Plus” is also available and has a black top. Created by San Francisco-based beverage marketing firm McKenzie River Corporation, early marketing relied on word of mouth primed by giving away large quantities of the beverage. Its critics dislike the high acidity, sweetness (though less sweet than many similar alcopop brands), and blatantly artificial flavor. Ironically, fans like the beverage for the same reasons, although the caffeine and high alcohol content, as well as the herbal components, also play a factor. Sparks also has a tendency to change the color of the tongue and teeth temporarily, after consumption of several of these beverages due to FD&C Yellow No.5. On August 14, 2006, Miller Brewing announced it had completed the purchase of Sparks from McKenzie River Corp. for $215 million cash.[1] Miller had been producing Sparks prior to this purchase.[2] These facts brought to you from wikipedia.com

One day my friend Owen and I go to skate this pool we had ridden a few times already. This pool was at an abandon construction job and had been going for along time. We pull up and there are a bunch of cars parked outside. As we get closer we realize that this once forgotten remodel job has been revamped. So I look at Owen and say, “lets see if we can turn this into a permission pool.” He says ok and we get out of the car and walk up. I look around to try to find the guy who is running the job. I find my man, a balding, overweight, middle aged middle eastern guy. Seems friendly huh? So we walk up and I say, “hey what’s up man.” He replies, “How can I help.” In his already grumpy old man tone of voice. I say, “ Hey can we ride your pool.” He then goes, “Huh?” Oh great now he can’t speak English, this should be fun, but being the stupid kids we are we keep going. “ Uhh ya you know skateboard in your pool.” I then precede to point back towards the pool and make a rolling motion with my hand. He then replies, “yes.” For about a split second I am in a state of shock that he actually just said the legally binding forbidden words to any can I ride your pool related questions. But Its not over yet. Then he goes, “Why.” Now this is a question you want to be asked in an interview or something not in front 10 illegal immigrant day workers and a confused contractor. Never the less I persist. “ Um, because its fun.” That should be a good enough answer right.? We’ll now the expression on his face has turned from confused to enraged. Which is not a good sign. He then yells, “GET OUT ” I then replied with the ever handy, “Huh?” “Get off my property ” He yells. By now the whole construction site has come to a halt and Owen and I are now faced with a construction crew with power tools in hand and an enraged contractor. Not Good. However Owen standing behind me watching the whole thing instead of trembling in fear, he does the complete opposite. He bursts into laughter Now this only infuriates our overweight friend who then precedes to cuss us out and informs us that we have no idea what he would do to us if we ever came back here. As we are driving he eye balls us the whole way as we try not to burst into uncontrollable laughter. Well you can’t knock us for trying, and we even got a cool story out of it. Time to move onto the next pool. - Corey Minderhout

Cockpit Resurrection by Markoni

After a week long vacation and having found, drained and skated a couple of pools outside of my state, I had a dream of patching some stuff up. A pool I know of that has been sitting for quite a few months after being hit by the jack hammer was what I had in mind. I stumbled across this pool last summer and found it to be quite incredible. The transitions were amazing. No wheel marks, just some dirt, leaves, and trash in the deep and shallow. So without hesitation I grabbed my broom and got all the crap out of the way so I could take some turn. I was stoked to find that the shallow and sidewalls was so mellow. I charged into the deep and found out that it wasn’t perfect all the way around. But that’s what make a pool fun. Always something unique. A real pool I could actually drop into and grind the shallow. We had plenty of late summer evening sessions. After a couple of weeks it seemed a lot more peeps were starting to hit it as well. Soon thereafter it was gonzo. Guess the city got a hold of one of those big backhoe things. They busted up the coping pretty good and punched plenty of holes in there as well. The summer is on us again and on 6.6.06 I decided to go to work. Fuck it, I want to skate that shallow end again. So my first method was the thin plate and tape theory for a quick sesh. One of the holes sunk in a half inch or so. Ended up packing it in nicely. Ouch. A day or two later I brought in some quick-crete and water and started filling away. A lot more holes than I figured. I got the shallow done though. Got to skate around on that for a while. Next time I came in I was working on the deep end and the fire crew showed up. Stuck in the deep end I grabbed what I could and hid in the maids quarters. A little house on the west part of the property. They were on the roof spraying sections with bright orange paint. I though for sure I was getting caught by this crew. Only a matter of time before they came over to the little house I was in. Fortunately there is a back door. I waited and waited, finally saw them walking around the pool and I split out the back, across the field and back to the sidewalk. I never looked back, and never heard a “hey!” Sketchy moment there. I though for sure they would notice the wet holes and water in the wheel barrow in the deep end. Came back a day or two later and everything was good to go! So I got to drop in that baby again. Forgot about the non-perfect deep end and had to put in some dues but all was good. We got a couple of sessions. So stoked. Until, one evening we went to go hit it and the fire crew was there staying late doing practice drills. We actually got to rap with

some of the crew and they told us they had it for 3 more days then the demo crew was coming in. Super bummer. Still, the pool was left alone. We got a couple more sessions in until finally they demo crew dropped a Eucalyptus tree in the pool. Shit, a tree in the pool. No tree ‘ll stop me. We’ll have to round up some heads to get this out. Unfortunately, the weekend is over and I’m sure if the demo crew went through the lengths to drop an entire tree in there that weekend would really be it. Having a tree in the pool leads me to believe that the pool will be there for a while, wouldn’t you think? Oh well, by the time I put this story up it’ll be gonzo anyway. Was it worth it? Hell yeah!! I’d do it again. My only regret is that I didn’t think of doing this 2 or 3 months ago!!

l o r t a P Park

Camarillo, Ca - If you live by here or are on a road trip, this may be worth a turn but for the most part the park is not worth a long trip. Rectangle bowl and some lump bumps, quarter pipes, little flow, ok street stuff. It is free and pads not enforced or required when we stopped by.

corey at camarillo photos by alex

Madras, Oregon - Now we are talking. The big bowl with the no flat bottom shallow pocket was sick. Fun, fast, empty until skate camp shows up. Fun mini ramp flow area and mini peanut bowl. The street section was pretty bleak with the ghetto bank to wall ride shoulder rest the main highlight. Worth the trip, especially if your passing through toward Klamath Falls or something. Redmond is near by and a few other sick spots. Some shady old guy rolled up with a beat up truck and all these bikes and was yelling at the kids to give them away. All the kids there were tripped out and just stared. He got pissed and took off in his truck, pulls over and throws a bike. Madras was is sick.

So this was supposed to be an interview with Smogtown, but myspace sucks and then I lagged and well here it is time to get this done and no interview. So to make up here is the story of the whiplash bowl. We were skating laguna niguel park one night, back when it was the only park around with lights for hours, and Guitardo and Chavez were out riding. It was the night most the crew would show up to ride. Chris standing in the benches area looks over and says he knows about a pool up the road, but had no idea about it . I couldn’t believe we weren’t there already, Let’s go! The house looks like your typical pad, but when the front door opened, most of the walls were gone and it was pretty ghetto. The pool had a room with a sliding door out to the pool. This tweeker guy was building a motorcycle in that

room along with his bed. The pool had slab coping and was tight but pretty fun. The diving board was in the way so the guys comes out with a grinder and grinds off the bolts. Everyone was skating under the sparks. It was sick. Here is what it looked like.

Well Smogtown is one of the most underrated bands around. If you live in South County, go check them out. -NG If you want to hear a few songs, search for Smogtown on myspace.

The Quiksilver North Shore Bowl Jam went down on the North Shore of Oahu on Dec. 9th 2006. Steve Ellis owner of the “Cholo Bowl” hosted this invite only event. Hawaiian style skating with very little industry vibe made this a killer event. Story and Photos by Robb Gardner

The Park The Punk Built By Jason Kirkpatrick In 1994, the word around the Arcata City Hall was that a skatepark would never be built in Arcata because it was too expensive. After the election in 1994, I began to look for folks who didn’t share that pessimistic outlook. Luckily, I found Carol Heaslip of Tiffany’s. We believed that with a little vision and lots of hard work, we could build it. Initial efforts at fundraising found little support. I had done some punk benefit concerts over the years and proposed that the City donate use of the Arcata Community Center for Skatepark Benefit Concerts. Thankfully, the council agreed. I contacted local bands that had also done benefits for Food Not Bombs and Free Arcata Radio. Sake, Grout, Couch, Sand Box Bully and many other local bands jumped at the chance to help turn a parking lot into a paved paradise for skaters. The first few concerts were huge successes. Ryan Jones, of the newly formed Elysium out of Arcata High, began to help pull shows together. We were bringing in anywhere from few hundred dollars to nearly a thousand bucks a show, with plans to continue the benefits every month until we raised enough cash. Even though we didn’t have any other large funding sources, this cash was enough for us to hire landscape architect Ken Wormhoudt, who had built skate parks all over California. With the money raised at the punk shows, we had enough to hire Ken to design the park. He came up from Santa Cruz and met with skaters, giving them clay to make a model of their ideal skatepark. After putting these pieces together, he came back up with a full clay model of what the park could look like. The shows at the community center allowed us to keep up with our payments to Ken, and before we knew it, blueprints were drawn up. By then the skate shows were getting a really good reputation. New young bands were forming, like Subzero and Hershey’s Innocent out of Eureka, and High and Dazzle Trap from Crescent City. The fact that out-oftown bands could also get air time and interviews on Free Arcata Radio helped draw Siren and Link 80 from Santa Rosa, Fifteen from the East Bay, Submission Hold from Vancouver and Sharks Kill, Ten-Four and Sweet Pea from Portland. These bands donated their time and money to the skatepark and gave 7” records to Free Arcata Radio. Food Not Bombs sometimes had unexpected vans filled with crusty punk bands like Fields of Shit from Oakland who showed up and played for free, so we could keep more money for the skatepark. Mixing in more local acts like The Gods, Hooka, Oliver, SaturnNine Resistor and more established bands like Vegas and Nuns With Guns meant that lots of folks were supporting the skatepark and creating a local thriving punk scene. The good reputation of the shows meant even lessor known bands like Better Than Your Hand, Project Hate (ex-Spitboy, Instant Girl), Black Jack Action and the Bar Feeders would be willing to come north from SF for no more than promise of Food Not Bombs for dinner, gas money and a floor to crash on. One band, Sawpit, even came from Japan last Halloween to play with Sake and Lungbutter. The blueprints and clay model of the skatepark were shown to every possible major donor in the area. The Arcata Foundation, Humboldt Area Foundation, the Arcata Exchange Club and others began to believe that the project might actually be viable. In the end the skatepark cost over $130,000 and received financial support from all segments of our community. Even so, without the initial support of punks, both young and old, from Arcata to Japan, the skatepark would not be here today.

DC1 concave and Atlas lamination make this deck a cult favorite. That’s the info on Deckcrafters.tv. One day Chuck was at the skatepark and was like I got something for ya and wallah, the storm drain had arrived. The indy’s and spitfires found there way onto the new set up and the trial was on. Product Reviews Pocket Pistols SkateBoards Deck and Wheels review Deck -8.675 x 32 WB=14.75 Wheels-58mm 99a To begin with this was a great thing to get to review because I am always excited to review square tail boards especially if they are under 9 inches wide. To make things even better the box had a set of 58mm Park Crusher wheels to accompany the deck. This deck was killer and the first one that I have reviewed where I rode it for a whole session right to begin with. This thing came in the mail to me a few months ago and it is still in my car as we speak . It’s the only board I have reviewed so far that I didn’t reshape to my own liking after my review was done. Pocket Pistols decks have tons of pop that just don’t stop even after tons of abuse in parks pools and to the liquor store. The wheels were a great match with the deck and fast as hell. They felt a little harder than 99a but I rode them in the Combi and survived so their not too hard for all terrain. The wheels come in a variety of sizes for street, park or pool whatever you want they have it . The boards also come in a variety of sizes for all skaters and terrain . There team is a good one with all kinds of talent ripping all over everywhere so go support someone who is doing things right. www.pocketpistolskates.com

LOWER CLASS BRATS The New Seditionaries 5 out of 5 Putting the danger and chaos back into punk, one punch at a time. Today’s first clue on Punk-Rock Jeopardy- the answer is: Three years. If you guessed, “How long it takes to incubate a perfect groin-kicking street-punk record, “ then you win the round, and the privilege of head butting the host and trashing the studio. Austin, Texas’ street warriors Lower Class Brats epitomize all of the hooliganism associated with old-school punk on The New Seditionaires, but the disc is so tight musically, you’d have to have a Nickleback tattoo to not be moved by it. Tracks like “The Worst” and “I’m A Mess” (“Got no cause / got no hope / they say I’m self-destructive and it shows”) are galvanizing punk anthems for the disenfranchised, collected under the banner of “unity through debauchery.” Even the deft instrumental “Lip Music” exhibits a spirit usually found in old demo tapes of the Clash rehearsing with respected punk keyman Mickey Gallagher. You kinda get the feeling that despite their uncompromising don’t-five-a-guck stance, the Brats would be concerned if somebody got badly hurt at one of their gigs. Truth is, they’d probably nod at each other and mouth “Cool!” before suppressing their laughter and emptying another beer can.

The MINIKISS Story As Told By Joey This is Joey Fatale creator and owner of Mini Kiss, the Hottest Littlest Band in the World.... I would like to start by saying I had the biggest love for 80s/ Hair-Metal bands and my first love was Kiss, and Gene Simmons. Kiss was created in NYC and Minikiss was born in NYC.

Dead Lazlo’s Place has been serving it up since 1990 and probably deserve more regonition than they get. The album they sent in was Twelve Ounce Inspiration and is full of sick tunes. Drivey tight riffs with some actually decent singing work out really well for a pre skate amp on the ride to a spot. You can check them out on the net at http:// www.deadlazlosplace.net or you can find them on myspace.

Mini Kiss was born on September 1, 1996 when I was moving from one location to another. As I was putting away my Albums/Vinyl I came across my Non-Opened Alive Kiss album which to this day has the Original Lick on Tattoos and separate pictures of each member. When I looked at the album I had this huge thought of having a Little People Kiss Tribute Band. So my first gig was October 30, 1996 when a friend that I always worked for, Andy Hirsh, greatest guy and manager of a club called The Lava Lounge in New York City. Andy said to me, “I need something different this year.” So I told him about my cool idea Mini Kiss, “it’s a tribute band made up of four little people dressed up like Kiss.” His response: “Joey, that’s a fuckin awesome idea.” So I had a month to gather four guys and come up with costumes and make-up. Craig, Mike, Victor and I got all these 80’s clothes, ripped some of them up and threw some paint on our faces. It was corny but the clothes were cool.

Frontside Five - Fall Out Of Line - This is the second album frontside five has sent and they have definitely been doing some hard work. This album is faster and tighter than the first album and will make you want to kill pool coping. The band skates too so even better, support fellow skaters. You can check them out on the net at http://www.frontsidefive. net/ or find them at a show near you. Raw energy is captured in this album and is definitely worth a listen or two.

Watch Them Die Watch Them Die is a metal/thrash/punk band out of the east bay and these guys are the shit. Their self titled CD is out on Century Media Records www.centurymedia. com. I first listened to this CD in my car stuck in traffic and it made me want to smash my way out of traffic and destroy the world. I would describe the sound to be like Pantera/Dystopia/The Haunted mixed in a blender and then poured out to infect everything that it comes in contact with. With members from Ojo Rojo, El Dopa, and Grimple you know it’s going to be good. You can check out their site at www.watchthemdie.com for tour dates, merchandise etc… Buy this CD and be ready to annihilate something. -RMG

We get to the venue; have a couple of drinks before show time to loosen up. Our first show was lip-synching to a Kiss CD and playing blow-up guitars like you see at parties. We stood on top of the bar and we sung five songs from the actual Kiss CD. WE WERE A HIT!! Cops had to come because the place was mobbed, but they loved us too!! We took some pictures outside with them. It was so cool. You can see a clip of us getting ready at our first show HERE. After that show we got called from people that knew Andy who wanted us to perform for them. We didn’t even have a set or people, I would just get who was available. It just kept growing and growing in popularity. I guess it was because of the hype of being the Ultimate Band in the world. And BAM Minikiss was born. At the time when I created Minikiss I was in another Little People band with these Jersey guys, but there were too many chiefs and not enough Indians. So I left and continued with Minikiss. I even have copy cats now!! To me imitation is the best form of flattery. Me imitating the best band in the world because I love Kiss and so the copy cats must love Minikiss because they are copying us. What can I say? Thank you!!
