Tech Check-In! Gone are the days when we needed to remember phone numbers, house numbers, birthdays, or appointments. Now, smartphone apps make it easier than ever. Access music, games, restaurant reservations, and more! Although there are many apps available for a multitude of purposes and we could not possibly outline them all, we have listed a few useful ones.

My Boca Link

(Free) MyBocaLink is the official mobile app for the City of Boca Raton, FL government. The app provides a connection between the City of Boca Raton and citizens and visitors. Enjoy convenient access to popular services, calendars, and event registration. Whether a resident or visitor, this app delivers access to community news, events, and emergency alerts.

Park ‘N’ Forget

(Available for: iPhone; $0.99) Parking lots can be confusing, and trying to locate your car among hundreds of other vehicles frustrates even the most patient driver, young or old. Park ‘n’ Forget helps you remember where you parked your car and will even monitor the amount of time spent in metered parking spots. When leaving your car in a parking deck, pick the color or number associated with the deck level to pinpoint your location.

Pillboxie

(Available for: iPhone and iPad; $0.99) The Pillboxie app reminds you to take medications at the scheduled times you set. Customize your medications by color and drag them into the sectioned pillbox graphic to easily organize your prescription schedule. This useful app ensures you will never again forget to take your daily medications.

EyeReader by NetSoft

(Available $1.99 iOS on the App store on your Android or iOS smartphone or tablet) If you hate reading restaurant menus by candlelight, you may find this magnifying glass app handy. Simply hold your phone over any text and the EyeReader will magnify it and light it up for you.

Words with Friends

Words with Friends is similar to the popular board game, Scrabble. Players can challenge their friends and family, however distant they might be. This lets them play a mentally engaging game while having fun and staying social. Its widespread popularity means finding a game is never any trouble.

Yesterday USA (iPhone and iPad)

This is an internet radio, broadcasting retro music and popular shows from the 1920s to 1950s. It is free and is operated by volunteers willing to preserve the history of radio. As it immerses the listeners into the peaceful old-time atmosphere, the app can be recommended not only for grandparents, but also for the entire family.

The Weather Channel

(Available for: iPhone; Free) Never let weather surprise you again. Get constant updates on the day’s weather and what to expect in the forecast. Mobile alerts let you know if your forecast predicts severe weather, giving you ample time to get indoors before an approaching storm.

Goodreads

Discover and share your favorite books on the Goodreads app. Recommended by 20 million members, this app allows users to rate their recently read books and give brief explanations of their choices. View other users’ reading history to see how often they read and their typical genre, to find out if you share mutual interests. With Goodreads, you do not have to purchase a book based solely on its cover.

Find My iPhone

(Available for: iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone; Free) Like the name implies, Find My iPhone helps you find your missing device, while also protecting the data stored on your phone in case of theft. Sign in with your Apple ID and you can remotely lock the device, display messages to whoever has your phone, play sounds, and even erase the device completely. Find My iPhone safeguards your cell phone and protects your personal information in case your phone is stolen.

NPR

(Available for: iPhone, iPad, Android; Free) Get worldwide news and listen to your favorite NPR programs on the go. Users can search the NPR archives to listen to interviews from previous years. The NPR app gives older adults their world news and relevant stories in a concise and easy-to-use app.

AARP Now App

This app gives you senior-specific news, shares events happening locally, and tells you what discounts you qualify for with your AARP membership.

Pandora

(Cost: Free, Ad-free versions vary) This online music service lets you hear the music you want, when you want it. As many of us know, the right music can help a person power up, mellow out, or get inspired. On Pandora, you get to create your own “stations” based on your favorite genre, artist, or specific song. Pandora then creates a playlist of music that it believes is either spot-on or in the same vein. www.brokensoundclub.org

Sharing the Courses Florida golf courses, with their lush vegetation and water features, are the perfect environment to attract both local and migrant birds. Living so close to active humans, however, who take pleasure in hitting a golf ball long distances to find its way to a little cup, requires that we help our avaian friends with their accommodations. Placed strategically throughout both of our Broken Sound golf courses, we provide housing for birds to raise their young. The charts to the right will tell you where to look for each of the species that have become our neighbors. They feed and nest at different times, so keep your eyes open, as you may get to see them coming and going. Here is our April report of sightings: Screech Owls are using the boxes and Purple Martins are back in full force. It is early in the Martin season, so there aren’t any eggs yet. In May, start watching for Woodpeckers and Flycatchers to nest, as well.

Eating and Exercise Tips From the Pros Is it bad to exercise on an empty stomach, especially in the morning? It depends on the type of exercise. A brisk walk or light jog on an empty stomach is fine; just drink a glass of water before heading out the door. For more intense exercise, eat some easy-to-digest carbs (a packet of instant grits, a slice of toast, half a plain bagel, a banana, or a cup of fruit cocktail, washed down with a glass of water) to help provide fuel. What is the best thing to eat before exercising for energy and endurance? You need quality carbs, lean protein, heart-healthy fats, and fluids. Your muscles rely on carbohydrates like breads, cereals, pasta, rice, fruits, and vegetables for quick energy. You need protein for your muscles and for your blood cells, which bring nutrients and oxygen to your muscles. You also need fluids, or your body will have a hard time performing at its best. Is there an ideal meal to eat before exercise? There is no one meal that you need to eat before working out. Instead, focus on these five things: 1. Low fat 2. Moderate in carbs and protein 3. Low fiber 4. Includes fluids 5. Made up of familiar foods that you tolerate well 12

The Sound May/June/July 2018

Why is it so important to drink plenty of liquids during exercise? Water acts as your body’s cooling system. You don’t want to get dehydrated. The best way to stay hydrated is to drink plenty of fluids with meals, and drink about two cups (16 ounces) of water two hours before exercise. Is it better to stay hydrated with sports drinks or plain water? Water is often enough. But if you are exercising for more than 60 minutes in hot, humid conditions, sports drinks may help. They give you carbs and sodium, as well as fluids. Sports drinks are also a good choice if you play team sports like soccer or football, especially when the temperature and humidity are high. If you perspire a lot, a sports drink might be preferable to water. Do you need to eat protein after exercising? It is a good idea, because it helps your muscles recover and grow. Your muscles don’t care if the protein comes from a hard-boiled egg, glass of chocolate milk, or whey protein shake. Whatever you choose, more isn’t better. You need only 10-20 grams of protein for your muscles.

1. Eggs Protein and carbs are the two keys to a good post-workout meal. Eggs have the former covered. At just 70 calories each, eggs pack 6.3 grams of protein and are one of the few foods that naturally contain vitamin D. 2. Quinoa For your dose of carbs, brown rice is fine, but it cannot compete with all the vitamins and nutrients found in quinoa (pronounced “keen-wah”). It also contains far more protein and fiber than brown rice, and requires less time to prepare. 3. Orange Juice Instead of a Gatorade, grab a glass of OJ. In addition to vitamin C, you will also get significantly more potassium than you would from popular sports drinks, which are generally intended for use during extended exercise, not after. Potassium is an important electrolyte that helps the body restore its fluid levels. Orange juice also works well for protein shakes. 4. Kefir Kefir, a fermented milk drink made from probiotic bacteria, has been growing in popularity, and rightfully so. Just one cup of kefir contains 11–14 grams of “complete proteins” which don’t occur naturally in the body. Dairy proteins are especially helpful for maintaining lean muscle mass and speeding up weight loss. While its tangy flavor may take some getting used to, it mixes well with fruit, cereal, and whey protein. 5. Bananas Bananas are high in the “good” kinds of carbs you need after a workout. These fast-acting carbs will help restore your body’s levels of glycogen, which helps rebuild damaged muscles. And they provide lots of wonderful potassium. 6. Salmon Not only will you get a large dose of protein, but the anti-inflammatory omega-3s found in salmon will help rebuild your muscles and increase performance.

7. Blueberries These little guys give your body a huge antioxidant boost. In fact, studies show that blueberries can triple your rate of recovery after intense workouts. 8. Whole-Grain Pita and Hummus This is a great meat-free option that’s also very easy to prepare. Made from chickpeas, hummus contains both protein and carbs, and the slow-release carbs from the pita will keep energy levels up after a tough workout. 9. Dried Fruit and Nuts If you are crunched for time, a handful or two of this snack delivers a quick protein and carb fix. Soy nuts are especially helpful for building muscle; a half cup contains 34 grams of protein. 10. Pineapple Pineapples contain bromelain, a natural anti-inflammatory that has been proven to heal bruises, sprains, and swelling. They’re also high in vitamin C, a key component in repairing tissue. 11. Sweet Potatoes Along with a healthy dose of carbs, sweet potatoes contain a variety of vitamins and nutrients, particularly vitamins B6, C, D, magnesium, and potassium. 12. Kiwi Kiwis pack huge amounts of vitamin C and potassium into a tiny serving. They’re also an excellent source of antioxidants, which help combat muscle soreness. Bonus tip: Don’t throw out the skin; it is full of even more nutrients. 13. Water This one may seem obvious, but failure to hydrate properly is a common exercising mistake. To feel great and stay energized, you should replace every pound lost during a workout with two to three glasses of water.

T

he aerobathon was held on February 15, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Fitness Center in studios one and two. This was an interactive event that consisted of 30-minute classes showcasing our group fitness instructors and included a wide variety of classes taught at Broken Sound. The event began with a bang as our social director, Al Salkeld, started his aerobics class. If you are a fan of 80’s aerobics classes, you will love his sessions. Our special guest star, Todd Allen from LIVunlimited in New York City, taught two classes to a packed studio. His high-energy approach to fitness had the Members asking when Todd would be back again. Rosalie, who teaches dance moves and social dance at Broken Sound, has received several awards for outstanding dance instruction and is on staff at Arthur Murray’s dance studio. Several of our personal trainers – Ginger Keith, Kristin Ericksen, and Muge Portakloglu, who also teach group classes – were putting their talents on display as well. The food consisted of fruit, bars, and healthy snacks. Along with full classes and 100% positive feedback from the Members, this was an event that needs to revisited in the upcoming season. 16

TSP Testimonial from Robert Gannon: “Thank you for the opportunity to share my experience and opinion on the TSP program. As we discussed, my initial concern was that the program would be too heavily weighted towards the P. T. aspects of the course. I am delighted to say that that was not the case! The initial video recording of my tennis strokes was very revealing; your written report has proven invaluable in addressing my shortcomings game wise. Equally important was the program that Joe Valentino put together for me after my initial FMS evaluation (talk about a humbling experience!). I was amazed at the change in my core muscle development – and I’ve been going to the gym all my adult life! The combination of these two aspects has left me feeling much stronger and more agile on my feet. I still have a long way to go to incorporate your observations in my short game, but I would only say in closing that you guys have put together a great program that I would recommend to anyone looking to build a better physique and more competitive tennis program.” Testimonial from Karen Goldsmith “The promise: to train like a pro for success on the court. As promised, I have been training with a TSP fitness expert for the past ten weeks. TSP is a multi faceted, complete program. Let me start at the beginning – the ASSESSMENT. First, a full In-Body analysis with Chuck (very informative), and a half-hour with a nutritionist from Boca Regional Hospital. Next, an on-court tennis video assessment and stroke analysis with Denzil. This, coupled with a very thorough Functional Movement Screen administered by my personal trainer, Ingrid, was terrific in assessing my strengths (not so many) and my weaknesses (many). Armed with this knowledge, Ingrid determined a workout program to help me become a stronger, more agile and more effective tennis player. Twice a week I met with Ingrid for 30 minutes. At the end of the ten sessions, Ingrid re-administered the Functional Movement Screen and... the result was, as promised, that I trained successfully and it showed in my increased strength and agility, in both my tennis and Pilates workouts. I highly recommend this program.” Testimonial from Marc Goldsmith “The TSP program is providing me with a longer lease on tennis. As the pros improve my fitness, correct my many swing errors, and better focus my balance, my productive tennis (spelled aces and passing shots) is bound to improve. I did this for the long-term benefit, but I’m seeing short-term gains in flexibility and mobility. Not quite a twofor, but I will continue working with this great team and hopefully you won’t recognize the old tennis player, and I can introduce you to the new one. Join and enjoy! Denzil, Chuck, and Sarah are a joy to work with and learn from. You can teach an old dog (me) new tricks. Thanks TSP!”

Our Members were excited to participate in the Miami Lacoste Tennis Croc Open at Turnberry Isle in Aventura, on Sunday, March 18. They competed against other Lacoste clubs from the Miami area. Congratulations to our BSC winners: Nathalie Balmer and Susan Lebersfeld 2nd place and David Nelson and David Stoff 2nd place.

Learnin’ With Vernon THE GAME PLAN – DO YOU HAVE ONE? Having a game plan established before you hit the ball will give you comfort and confidence when executing your shots. It is also a great way to understand what is working well during a match or what adjustments you may need to make as you are playing. There are two instances in particular when it is absolutely critical to have a game plan.

WHEN RETURNING A SERVE Before you hit the return, know where you are going to hit the ball (i.e. cross court, down the line, lob, or short). It is also imperative to know where you would like to be positioned after the return: Are you going to go to the net or are you going to stay behind the baseline? The starting position of most players when returning a serve is in no-man’s land. Although this area is at times a place where you have no choice but to hit balls from, it is necessary to move out of this position immediately, either forward toward the net or backward behind the baseline. By having a game plan when returning the serve, you can position yourself favorably!

WHEN HITTING YOUR SERVE Decide ahead of time where you would like to place your serve in the box. Know if you are going to serve into the body, to the forehand, or to the backhand. You should also know what you are going to do after you hit the serve: Are you going to the net (serve and volley), or are you staying back behind the baseline? Believe it or not, the serve dictates the return. Knowing that you have the power to set yourself up successfully should mean that you never hit your serve without a thoughtful game plan! Make sure that when you establish a game plan before you serve or return, take a quick few seconds to meet with your partner to let him/her in on the plan... The power is yours, and it’s all in the game plan!

“Make sure that when you establish a game plan before you serve or return, take a quick few seconds to meet with your partner to let him/her in on the plan... The power is yours, and it’s all in the game plan!”

DEFENDING TWO PLAYERS AT THE NET Here is the scenario, a very common one when playing doubles: You are at the baseline while your partner is at the net, and both of your opponents are also at the net. I know this situation may seem a little intimidating and you feel as if you have no place to hit the ball, but you may be surprised with the number of great options you actually do have. The following is a list of those options in the order of priority: 1) Hit the ball down the middle between the two players, keeping the ball low. This is your best choice, if it is at all possible. 2) Your next best choice is to hit at one of the opponents, keeping your ball low. 3) Go down the line if you are pulled off the court and your opponent is not covering the alley. 4) Lob the ball (emphasis on height) if you are in trouble or if your opponents are playing extremely close to the net. 5) Hit a cross court angle. This is a very low percentage shot; only hit this if the opponents at the net are out of position. As you can see, there is no need to feel overwhelmed. Just take a deep breath, pick one of the five options, and go for it!

BROKEN SOUND’S JUNIOR TENNIS ACADEMY The Junior Tennis Academy at Broken Sound was started by our Junior Program Manager, Arnaud Delanoe, in 2007, with six children on two tennis courts and two coaches. After two years, the Tennis Academy had 20 children daily, using five tennis courts and with five coaches. Today, the Academy has grown to close to 50 children daily, ranging in age from 5 to 17, practicing after school on 12 tennis courts, using 12 certified tennis coaches. The Academy offers training sessions four days a week, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., with a combination of practice sessions and supervised match play, including a year-round junior tennis ladder. There are organized matches on a regular basis over the weekends vs. other local junior tennis programs. We are proud to announce that one of the Academy’s students, Daniel Luptak, age 17, qualified this year for a full tennis scholarship at Keiser University of West Palm Beach. Daniel has been training at the Broken Sound Tennis Academy since age 9. We all congratulate Daniel on his achievement.

Top 10 Wow Items for Planning a Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Party Lorant Botha, Catering Director

10. LIVING TABLE

A table with a human centerpiece can be used as a welcome table displaying seating cards, or serving beverages or food items. The guests interact with a themed character, making the experience more personable. Fun for Mitzvah Celebrations, but also Birthdays and Anniversaries.

9. LIVING STATUES

Such acts come to life suddenly, surprising guests. Excellent for a grand entrance.

8. UPBEAT COCKTAIL HOUR MUSIC

It is always most important to set off the energy of an event from the first contact with a guest. The energy of a party can best be showcased by the cocktail reception’s music. We recommend modern music, such as an electric violin for birthdays and anniversaries. For weddings, elegant and classic is still the way to go.

38

The Sound May/June/July 2018

7. BLACKLIGHT

Ultra-violet lighting for a party is always cool, and neon décor looks best with this detail. Black lights transform any room into a nightclub, and remind us of our youth, and also of how much we hate lint!

6. FAB-THEMED GRAND ENTRANCE

Every large celebration showcases a presentation of the honorary guest or host. To accent their introduction, pairing the special touch with their personality or heritage is always fabulous. If the birthday girl hails from New Orleans, what better way to introduce her than with a marching band. If the Bar Mitzvah boy is a basketball fan, have him walk in escorted by the Miami Heat’s cheerleaders.

5. CHAMPAGNE TOWER

A trussing tower with an acrobat serving Champagne is not only purposeful, but also a decorative showstopper.

4. SPECIALTY ACTS

Fire-spewing and bottle throwing showman bartenders or stilted robot dancers shooting CO2 guns always get the guests’ attention, and will make sure they talk about your party for years to come.

3. ICE BAR

While a costly endeavor, it is not only practical, but a focal point of any room. The bar can be equipped with vodka luges, beer taps, etc.

2. CONFETTI CANNONS

Regardless of age, everyone likes a shower with colorful tissue paper.

1. FIREWORKS SET TO MUSIC OR LASER SHOW

While a fireworks show is always fabulous, a Laser Show is just as much fun and certainly more environmentally friendly. www.brokensoundclub.org

COLOR WARS Memories of youthful days at camp came flooding back as we split into groups identified by color, and proceeded to compete for titles and glory. In the end, it was being with family, friends and neighbors that won the day!

Broken Sound’s Women’s Club What a fun and full season it was for the Women’s Club. The Gala Fashion Show and Luncheon with Neiman Marcus, Professor Robert Watson’s talk on “Alexander Hamilton: The Man, The Myth, The Musical”, Joyce Saltman’s humorous presentation, and Dr. Ralph Nurenberger’s The Legacy of the Six-day War got the season off to a great start. Then literary entertainer Barbara Rinella acted out the book, Prince Charles and the Royal Ladies, followed by a High Tea Brunch! As you can see

from the photos, the ladies really got into it, wearing their tiaras, pearls, hats, and fascinators. Out-of-Club Trips included a visit to the Harid Conservatory, lunch aboard NCL’s newest cruise ship, The Escape, and the show, South Pacific, at the Jupiter Maltz Theater. To join us next year, please call Rowena Kovler at 241-5486. If you have any questions, please call Marjorie Lassoff at 241-2411.

Boca Friends Pap Corps Fund Raiser On March 23 and 25, the Pap Corps entertained over 500 members and guests in their fourth original parody. The proceeds were considered a major fund raiser for Boca Friends. Twenty-two members from all membership levels participated in the event, which was produced and directed by Paula Karp with assists from Shelley Stoltz and Harvey and Trudi Feinman, with music by Marilyn Gusky. This is always a fun event, and if anyone is interested in a future production, please contact a production member. Nothing makes you feel better than a good laugh for a good cause! 46
