THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-CARE The holidays have passed by like a blur and we are faced with the New Year ahead. Most of us want to be better, to do better, find some parts of ourselves, lose some parts of ourselves. At the end of the day though, it all comes down to one main question - “how can I be happier”? Most people have been on a plane and heard the safety instructions on what to do when the oxygen mask drops. You must put your mask on before you can assist others. The same goes for life. We must exercise self-care and find a way to be happy and healthy ourselves before we can be beneficial for anyone else. No matter how indulgent or fancy the term may sound, self-care is crucial for our physical, emotional and mental well-being. You shouldn’t neglect self-care and here's why: Know your worth: Self-care is important to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself as it produces positive feelings and boosts your confidence and self-esteem. Also, self-care is necessary to remind yourself and others that you and your needs are important too. A healthy work-life balance: Contrary to common belief, workaholism is not a virtue. Overwork can make you less productive, disorganized and emotionally depleted. It can also lead to all sorts of health problems, from anxiety and depression, to insomnia and heart diseases. Professional self-care habits like taking intermittent breaks, setting professional boundaries and avoiding overextending, ensures that you stay sharp, motivated and healthy. Stress management: While a little dose of stress is normal, constant stress and anxiety can have an adverse effect on your mental and physical health. Smart self-care habits like eating healthy, connecting with a loved one, or practicing meditation cuts down the toxic effects of stress by improving your mood and boosting your energy and confidence levels. Start living, stop existing: Life is a precious gift. So, why waste it when we have the choice to have a more meaningful existence? You have a lot of responsibilities, but it’s important to remember that taking care of yourself is also your responsibility. Little things like enjoying a bubble bath or reading a book are essential for your daily happiness. Taking up a new hobby or learning a new language can make your life more purposeful by giving you a new reason to get up in the morning. Better physical health: Self-care is not just about your mental health; It’s also about caring for your physical self by eating healthy, getting adequate sleep, caring about your hygiene and exercising regularly.

4

Here are ten small, simple self-care habits that anyone can get into:

1. Go for a walk, run or a light jog. 2. Meditate or do deep breathing for five minutes. 3. Take a break when you need it. 4. Choose who you spend time with. 5. Laugh heartily at least once a day. 6. Eat green daily. 7. Avoid emotional eating. 8. Start a journal. 9. Learn to say ‘No.’ 10. Stop overthinking. Lastly, don’t put it off for next weekend, next holiday or the zombie apocalypse. Start taking care of yourself today! It won’t take long before you begin to see the difference!

NEW YEAR, NEW HEALTHY HABITS With the New Year upon us, one thing you can surely expect to see is overcrowded gyms as people work towards their New Year’s resolution of getting in shape and beginning a new fitness program. Come back a month later and you’ll likely see the crowds back to normal as a majority “fall off the wagon”. If this has been your experience in the past, here are a few tips to keep you on track in 2020. Start slow: If you have never exercised regularly in the past, don’t start by attempting to be in the gym every single day. This is a sure way to wear yourself down making it unlikely that you’ll continue with your goals. Instead start slow and work your way up. Start with 1-2 days for 20-30 minutes and build from there by adding more time to your workouts and days that you go to the gym. Set realistic goals: This a common mistake whenever someone is trying to commit to a healthier lifestyle. You may feel that you need to lose 20 pounds, but that doesn’t mean that your initial goal should be to shed all 20 pounds immediately. This unrealistic goal is sure to set you up for failure. Instead set smaller, more attainable goals. Tell yourself that you want to lose 3 pounds then once you hit that goal, set a new one until you reach your final goal. Just remember that progress is not attained overnight. Progress is NOT linear: This often happens with individuals who have made lifestyle changes and are making progress then all of a sudden they gain a pound, or two, or their progress stalls for a few weeks. This can lead to frustration and throwing in the towel. Instead, remember that progress, no matter what your goal, is not linear and there’s going to be peaks and valleys along the way. Every factor in your daily life can have an affect including stress, sleep, water intake, and sodium so stay focused and stick to your goals. You can’t ruin your progress in one day: One bad meal, or one bad day is not going to derail your entire progress. Always remember that you’re not going to gain fat in one day, or even one weekend, so if you find that you’ve slipped up one day, simply get back on track the following day. Any weight gain from day to day is simply water weight, which is always going to fluctuate.

TEAM TENNIS REPORT Our Claymates and Gentlemen’s teams are wrapping up for the first part of the season and we are half way through the season for the South Palm Beach County Women’s Tennis Association league. The fall season has been competitive with an earlier than usual start to the season with warm temperatures being the norm during clinics and match days. Despite the grueling temperatures our teams have been very formidable and have represented The Broken Sound Club extremely well.

SOUTH PALM BEACH COUNTY WOMEN’S TENNIS ASSOCIATION HALF TIME REPORT: Our ladies tennis team will be entering the second half of the season in a strong position. The league has yielded some great results thus far. We look forward to improving upon our results as we progress through the season. The current ratings for our SPBCWTA teams are as follows: Division 2A has had some setbacks with multiple players being injured and on medical leave. With our new Captain, Mrs. Jamie Stockton and Co-captain, Mrs. Joyce Bloshinsky, the team spirit is high. Currently at 67 points, we are raring to go for 2020 and we embrace the opportunity to bring the team to new historic highs amidst very challenging competition. Go team RAD! Division 4 is finding itself in a very respectable sixth place within an extremely challenging field of 14 teams. Racking up 4 consecutive wins to rally at the end of the 2019 season, was exactly the momentum that we needed to move forward. The team roster is at capacity and the results show our depth in our weekly lineups. Captain Mrs. Ginny Kobren and Co-Captain Mrs. Marcy Levine have done a stellar job. Division 6 results have been spectacular also. Our top lines have been very strong delivering many hard fought points to the team. Currently we find ourselves in good position to exceed our result from last year. This team has a very strong bond, especially when it comes to interclub matches. Led by Captain Mrs. Caryn Harris and Co-Captain Mrs. Karen Goldsmith, the team unity is full of positive energy. 12

11

Division 7 is improving rapidly. This is a whole new experience for the entire team and the results are slowly beginning to show the progress. Should this team continue improving at this pace, watch out Division 6! This team is strong and positive with leadership by, Captain Mrs. Susan Williams and Co-Captain Mrs. Lynn Kelin. Claymates Queen I and Princess IV have had hard fought battles and finished in great final standing. We look forward to another trimester starting in early January. Captain Mrs. Rosalind Lerner-Klein (Queen I), and Captain Mrs. Deirdre Radler and Mrs. Arleen Dworkin (co-captain).

GENTLEMEN ROUND UP Our gentlemen leagues are done for the fall season. We competed in two leagues with four teams and the results were fantastic! Grand Slam Tennis League: Our US Open I team finished in first place and our captains, Mr. Bob Armon and Mr. Jay Swilky (co-captain) have done an incredible job with the team and the league. Our Miami Open II finished in third place with our captain Mr. Ted Gilbert and co-captain Mr. Frank Setren. These results speak for themselves! Palm Beach Open Tennis League: In our Tuesday team with Mr. Stan Schreiber (captain), our team finished in a strong second place and our Thursday team also under Mr. Stan Schreiber won its blue division. Congratulations!!!

We look forward to the rest of the season for the South Palm Beach County Women’s Tennis Association league and to a new season for the Claymates and Gentlemen’s leagues. GO BROKEN SOUND!
