Message from Boca Regional Hospital: Thanks to all who participated in the Boca Regional at Broken Sound “Healthy Community” Health Assessment survey. Your input is truly valued and will play a key role in developing future programming for the residents at Broken Sound Club. One common theme throughout the responses was an overwhelming interest in onsite education and health screenings. In response to your requests, we’re developing a 5 part Lecture Series with a focus on Health & Prevention. Accompanying our Lecture Series will be related health screenings to inform, educate & empower you on multiple facets of your health. Details on Lecture topics & presenters to be advised. The onsite Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine program continues to serve many residents and has experienced tremendous growth over the

past few months. Keeping fellow members in mind, if you are unable to keep an appointment, please remember to cancel with a minimum 24 hours notice. This allows our Therapist to accommodate the maximum number of member requests each day. We will also continue to offer one-on-one Nutrition consultations with Leslie Burman. Be sure to schedule your appointment to ensure adequate time for each personal session. Our goal is to provide your community the tools necessary for residents to obtain optimal health & vitality. We look forward to our continued partnership & working together in establishing Broken Sound Club as one of America’s “Healthiest Communities”. For Therapy or Nutrition appointments, call 561-955-2100

Dear Friends Neighbors,

and

The start of a new season and with it a change in the nomenclature of this letter. Dear Members has been used so many times it is boring and not necessarily accurate........friends and neighbors more aptly describes my feeling towards you. So, a change …. It is the start of a new season and what will it offer us you ask? Well, for what seems like a long time, one with no construction .......a season of enjoyment, appreciation of what we all have accomplished and utilization of our facilities to the fullest. The first grand event of the season is Member meet Member, a time for all of us to get together, get to know someone new ( perhaps a new neighbor ) and have an incredible evening filled with superb cuisine and great music. If you have not attended Member/ Member before, this is the year to come. I promise, just the entrance to our Club alone will be worth the effort, and then, when you enter..........I just can’t wait to see your faces. That’s just the beginning - New Year’s Eve promises to be a gala that will rival almost anything, and our specialty nights such as Valentines will continue to impress and the list goes on. Now, for your palate - we aim to please and head chef Joe Longo and his extremely talented associates will not disappoint you. Whether it be Burgers ‘n Brews, Red Hot Tuesday, Italian night, our a la carte dinners or a simple dinner under the stars at our Bistro, our Club offers something special for everyone. I can’t leave out our sensational social department headed by Al and Sue with ample support by our committee volunteers. Extravaganzas galore are planned for your entertainment, participation and stimulation of your brains. They are far too numerous to mention here but make certain you open your emails and read the flyers posted in the clubhouse. Choose the activities that fit you and enjoy all. I mentioned “open your emails” above and that deserves a little more space. Approximately fifty (50) percent of the emails sent to you go unopened! Yes, a very high number. To make this an even more important percentage our Club gets at

least 2-5 comments daily asking why an activity was not promoted, why a change was never announced, etc. When the response is that it was and the individual is shown the email, the common reply is that “I never received it”. The remedy is easy - open your e-mails from the Club and at least peruse through them. Who knows - you might find something useful. In October something quite unique to gated country club communities happened in Broken Sound; as a result of the initiative and ensuing Bylaw amendment passed by your Board in June, thirty one (31) members were advised they were able to change their membership category! Some might say about time and some that it was due them, but to be able to do this without affecting the amount of dues of every other member, is something to be appreciated and to be proud of by all. Your Club once more has taken the lead. Yes, there were fees paid by these members pursuant to the rules; however the payback to these members is between 3 to 5 years dependent on certain circumstances. On a cash flow basis only, all members see a positive position in their first year! All of you are proud of your Club and you should be. Not only are our facilities among (if not) the top in South Florida and the envy of many, but we are positioned better than many other clubs to take full advantage of the paradigm shifts that are ongoing in our marketplace. Our conservative financial policies have resulted in our Club being in an extremely good financial position with over $3.6 million dollars in reserves. Additionally our sound fiscal plans regarding membership categories and equity have formed the groundwork for that amount to substantially increase now and in the future. Be assured that our Club will never reach its pinnacle. Our management team, the Board of Governors and you, our members, will only accept the highest level of services and operations performed on a fiscally sound basis. As a further note, you will see information in this newsletter regarding the municipal elections in Boca in March, and we have two members of Broken Sound running for City Council, Michael Mullaugh and Scott Singer, who are hoping for your support on March 11th. Regardless of how you vote, we urge everyone to cast their ballots. That’s it for this month. Enjoy every moment to the fullest, we only have one go around and make very day count. Best regards, Ivan Snyder, President Board of Governors

Your Vote Matters The 2014 Boca Raton Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2014. Last year’s statistics show that out of a total of 59,000 registered voters in Boca Raton, 7,000+ individuals voted which equals 12%. The total number of registered Broken Sound PUD voters is 3,100 and 490+ cast their ballot which equaled about 16%. We currently have two Broken Sound residents who are running for

City Council and regardless of how you vote, we urge you to go to the polls and VOTE. Broken Sound’s participation in the voting process has always exceeded the other districts in Boca and this has been recognized by the Mayor and City Council. It is important to Broken Sound and to the City of Boca Raton that you participate in the election process. To read more about Boca Raton’s City Council, visit http://www.ci.boca-raton.fl.us/

LEAGUE PLAY

.

Men’s

Our Men’s South County League team had another strong season in defense of their title. The team came up just short of another championship losing in the finals to Gleneagles.

Swingers

Congratulations to our Ladies’ Summer Swingers team, Jane Sonenshein and Kathy Oliver, Co-Chairs, who won the league championship this season. The team competed against seven other local clubs throughout the summer, holding the top position for most of the season. It was great to see them bring home the championship.

Women’s

season!

Please remember to keep your schedule clear for our Member Guest Events this winter. As in the past we will be hosting Member Guest events for both Men and Women. Due to the overwhelming demand for the Member Guest events we will continue to offer two separate days for both the Men’s and Women’s Member

A note from the BSWWGA: This year the BSWWGA’s Annual Holiday Charity tournament on Dec. 17th will benefit “The First Tee of the Palm Beaches” - a youth development program. Tax deductible donations of all your used golf clubs and bags can be dropped off at the Club Course anytime this fall and will be greatly appreciated.

by John Skaf PGA Director of Golf - Old Course With the season here and in full swing, it is great to see so many people back here at The Old Course. This past off-season was a busy one, compiling an extensive tournament and event schedule. The Men’s and Ladies’ Leagues will have a full schedule, featuring various formats as well as “mixer events”. This season there will be five Couples Social tournaments that will be played on Sundays throughout the season. There will also be a Couples Championship held in February. The success of last year’s two Member Guest days for both the men and women has given us the opportunity to provide the same for this year.

This past October, The Old Course hosted The Boca Cup which featured ten clubs from the Boca Raton area. The team of Broken Sound was comprised of Jeff Waber, Sal Caragliano, Ron Alexander, Larry Moses, Michael Lapkin, Harvey Feldman, Alan Myer, Jim Wick, Robert Smiley and Alan Brumel. The team finished in second place, missing the top honors by just one stroke. We will continue to host demo days from companies such as TaylorMade, Ping, Titleist, Callaway and Cobra. Please check your club calendar for the respective dates and times.

Tips & Strategies For Fun & Successful Tennis The Warm Up – Getting into “Match Mode”

A successful tennis player knows the effective procedure of getting into “match mode” before playing a competitive match. The importance of starting a match after being both fully warmed up and spending ample time in match mode can not be overestimated! Rushing to the match with only the official ten minute warm up period to prepare is absolutely insufficient. Not only is it not enough time to get your body ready but you will not be setting yourself up for success mentally, either. Make it a point to arrive in plenty of time so as to spend twenty to thirty minutes warming up and reserve those last ten minutes before the match to assess your opponents instead.

Your warm up is an opportunity to hit most of the shots, volleys, overheads, forehands, backhands, serves, returns, and approach shots. You should also try to play a few points to get a sense of how you are feeling and playing. By the time the official ten minute warm up begins, you should already have broken a sweat. Use this time instead to get an idea of your opponents strengths and weakness: Does your opponent have good volleys or is he/ she better at the baseline? Does your opponent take any volley or overhead practice? Does your opponent have a good serve? Does your opponent move well?..etc…. Assess the weather conditions: Is it windy? Which direction is the wind blowing? Who will be serving in the sun?

The season is about to begin, and I would like to welcome the members who are returning. We have a number of different events for everyone to choose from so please check our web site and also the tennis channel for the schedule that

Allow us to update you on your financial support at work. Here in the U.S. we continue supporting the work of our camps, youth activities and health screening and education at the high school level. The focus is teaching young people self examination for testicular and Breast Cancer. Hadassah’s commitment to Women’s Health has resulted in direct work with our legislators recommending and fostering programs directed at educating and caring for the female population in this nation. This focus dovetails with the Hadassah Hospital program that we will be presenting this year entitled “Every Beat Counts”. This year long effort is based on the data that “one out of every two women will experience some form of heart disease in their lifetime”, that heart disease is the NUMBER ONE KILLER OF WOMEN and that heart disease is different in women than in men. The hospital has established a new Heart Institute. Clinics at both Ein Kerem and Mt. Scopus constitute an inter-disciplinary team. The aim is to provide at risk women evaluation and tools to “change damaging behavior”.

www.brokensoundclub.org

“The Institute staff is already involved in several projects in the Arab and the Ultra Orthodox Jewish communities, where cultural issues and social norms often preclude women from taking control of their health. Outreach programs utilize social knowledge, planning programs in Arab schools where mothers will congregate, rather than looking for them to participate in a female only setting, where attendance is unlikely. There are two programs underway for Haredi (religious Jewish women) one with 500 teachers in girls schools and one with a specific religious community. There are also programs for HMO employees at both hospital campuses. Of course research is the basis of all that is done and therefore, also is an integral part of the program. Every program is evaluated and results are used to improve delivery and outcomes. Join us this season as we learn and can attempt to apply features of “Every Beat Counts” to our lives. We look forward to seeing you at our CARD PARTY, BOUTIQUE AND BRUNCH on December 5th, at our General Meeting the evening of December 9th and our first Lunch and Learn at 11 am on December 13. Look for our flyers and E-mails for details on all upcoming events. Feel free to contact us with questions and/or suggestions. Stanley Levine - Grand Oaks Volunteers for Israel is a non-profit U.S. organization that assists in the process of becoming a volunteer for IDF. SAR-EL is an Israeli non-profit, international volunteer group that assists the IDF in various locations throughout Israel by coordinating volunteers with their work experience. Why would a 77 year old man decide to embark on such an adventure? I heard through friends and articles about how SAR-EL’s mission was so critical to the survival of the IDF and was looking for something to give back to the state of Israel. Instead I found that this experience gave me back so much more than I ever could have imagined.

BUTTERFLY AND GARDEN CLUB Pigeon Orchid

The Butterfly and Garden Club has had two great events already! We were guests at the North American Butterfly Assn. The speaker told us all about the Atala butterfly. We saw a photo of an 86 day old male Atala flirting with a young female. He liked her, but she shooed him away with her little legs. It is a tough dating scene out there in butterfly world! We loved having Lorraine Conover, Pres. of the Boca Raton Orchid Society, come here to teach us how to mount orchids on almost anything. For our raffle she brought 10 Pigeon orchids, 10 Pulmaria Princess Victoria branches, ready for planting, and is allowing 10 of our members to tour her personal garden. How wonderful, is that?.

On Sat, November 9 we will be touring the Wilburn’s garden in West Palm, which is featured in the Mounts Botanical Registry. Her art will also be on display. Tickets at the door to benefit the Lake Worth Art League for art college scholarships. We will meet at my house at 12:00 in Cedar Cay, and form carpools. On our return there will be an “After The Tour Tea” at Sylvia Zeitlin’s Cedar Cay home. All are welcome. Tue, November 12 at 4:00pm. We will be joining with the Book Club. Please read Flight Behavior, by Barbara Kingsolver. Contact Judy Friedman at 977-8154 with any questions on the book club. Look for our green flyers in the bins for more details. Enjoy our wonderful world of gardening in our sub tropic climate. Any questions-call me, Lois Hendricks 994-6747.

Every evening after dinner we would sit in a conference room with our IDF liaison and learn about their important work, and history, but the best memory that is etched in my mine is the morning ritual of raising the Israeli flag, and the soldiers, and volunteers saluting it. Just knowing that in a small way I may have helped to raise the flag another day will inspire me for the rest of my life!
