I hope that you all are enjoying July so far. Summer is a great break from studying, tests, and #2 pencils. Volunteering however is definitely a year round activity! While most Key Club activities take place throughout the school year, there is no reason that your service should be stalled by the gap in the school year. Who? You! Any Division 42 Key Clubber is

invited! Where? Lake Cullaby in Warrenton, OR When? July 20th at Noon Why? DCM’s are important for bonding as a division and for getting updates on Clubs and getting service ideas. If that doesn’t spark your interest, maybe this will! This DCM is going to have some really fun activities planned and there will be free food! More information: You may park in the larger parking lot. We are meeting at the covered benches, but we can all walk over once we’ve all arrived. There is unfortunately a $3 parking fee, so please bring a few bucks. If we raise $50 for The Eliminate Project at our DCM, you may pie your LtG! So bring your pennies! See you all there!

International Convention: 2013

If you have ever been to DCON (District Convention), then you know that it is packed with spirit, fun, new ideas, and enthusiasm for service! Having recently returned from ICON (International Convention), I would love to tell that it is like DCON, only bigger and…international! ICON this year was held in Washington DC, Maryland. It was my first time on the East Coast and at a Key Club ICON. It was refreshing to see how many of us really do love service. I went to some really great forums and learned some new leadership skills and Key Club ideas. Dances, awards, service fairs, forums, oh my! Plus a tour of the area! ICON was a great week and a real highlight of my summer. It was tons of fun and I can’t wait to see what Anaheim’s going to be like! Anaheim, you say? Yes, Anaheim California! ICON 2014 is coming to the West Coast and we had better see all of you there! With a bit of a price tag, start fundraising now! Ask your sponsoring Kiwanis if it will help you and make sure to start holding fundraisers now to get going. The more the merrier. Going in large groups makes it all the more fun, so get your friends to start fundraising with you so that you can have the time of your life in Anaheim.

Meet a Trustee: Kelsie Hoppes What is your favorite Key Club service project? My favorite service project is the Foster kids Christmas Dinner. Being able to wrap presents and watch the kids who want/need them most open them is so rewarding.

What do you like about being a PNW Key Clubber? I love being a PNW Key Clubber because of the people! Our district/division is extremely diverse, accepting, kind, and spirited. We have members from such a vast area that we are able to learn a lot from one another.

What is your favorite color? My favorite color is purple.

Why did you decide to run for an international position? I was inspired to run for trustee after working on the divisional and district levels. Seeing, firsthand, how each level worked encouraged me to run so I too could make a difference in our organization.

What are your goals for being on the International Board? On the I-board, I plan to keep our focus on our core values: leadership, character building, caring, and inclusiveness. I want to charter more clubs, strengthen ties with our k-family, bridge the gap between club and international levels, and work to promote our preferred charities, especially Eliminate.

If you could be any animal, what would you be, and why? If I could be any animal I would be a flying squirrel! They seem very independent and driven! Why did you decide to get involved in Key Club? I joined Key Club as a way to get more involved in high school, especially since the club gave me lots of community service opportunities.

Rally Recap! Our Division!

Rallies are a great time to meet Key Clubbers around the area, to have fun, and to get pumped about volunteering! I had fun getting to see some of you. Fellow LtG, Sarah Phan, and I led a Flyers and Advertising workshop. If you are interested in the slideshow or want the lowdown on the info, feel free to email! Portland Rally had pizza, guest speaker Sharon Lacey, forums, water balloons, and pie throwing. While you might not have been able to attend our area rally, don’t stress because Seattle Rally is coming up on August 12th. It’s at Hazen High School at 9am. It’s going to be a blast! Hope to see you there!

The Eliminate Project This year’s district project is the Eliminate Project. The District’s project is a project and goal picked by the Governor that is worked towards for the year. Governor Trang Tran’s goal is to raise $24,000 or $2 for each of the 12,000 members of Key Clubbers in the PNW. Why Project Eliminate? Neonatal tetanus kills one baby every 9 minutes. Every year, 60,000 newborn babies die from MNT, or Maternal and Neonatal tetanus. Kiwanis has joined up with Unicef to completely eliminate MNT from the Earth. In order to do it, 129 million mothers need the vaccine. The mothers need a series of 3 shots to be immunized and to keep all of their future children safe. So, how much do these life saving shots cost? $1.80. That’s less than the cost of a cup of coffee or a soda! Together, we can raise small amounts of money to gather an ocean of support and make life saving changes.
