Brooklyn Public Library • CALENDAR OF EVENTS • September, October & November 2011

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO

Over the past year as your Interim Executive Director, I had the opportunity to get to know Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) and the great work our staff does to help Brooklynites enhance their lives. I now have the pleasure of serving as BPL’s first President and Chief Executive Officer and am excited to guide the Library as we become a leader in digital access. Many of you have heard me say or have read that I am committed to using technology to improve not only the way we work but also the way you can access our collections, programs and services, whether for information or entertainment. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to serve all of you. Starting September 10 we are greatly expanding library hours across the borough. Over half of our neighborhood libraries will be open six days a week, and average weekly hours will increase by over eight hours per library. The new schedule will make it easier for you to find time to fit us into your busy days. We hope to see you more as you take advantage of the new technology offerings and programs BPL provides. For a schedule of your library’s new hours, visit www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org and click New Expanded Hours of Service.

Thanks for Your Support! Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) would like to thank those who donated to our 2011 Support Our Shelves (SOS) campaign from March to June. Library lovers raised nearly $420,727 toward the purchase of new books, DVDs, eBooks and other materials at all 60 neighborhood libraries.

FEATURED STORIES

In June, Brooklyn Public Library had a ceremonial dedication at Central Library for the Leon Levy Information Commons, a state-of-the-art learning lab scheduled to open in 2013. The new Information Commons, made possible by a $3,250,000 grant from the Leon Levy Foundation, marks the next step in BPL’s efforts to foster lifelong learning and connect Brooklynites to the newest ways to achieve their goals in a fast-changing world. Students and researchers will have access to the Library’s growing suite of electronic resources, and the ideal space in which to use them. Jobseekers will find the classes and training they need to get ahead. And novelists, freelance writers and creators of all kinds will discover an inspiring and energetic space in which to plug in their laptops and get to work.

The Information Commons will offer a wide range of resources and the expert assistance and workshops to help library customers navigate them: • A 30-seat wireless training center where customers are trained by library staff members on an extensive suite of online databases • Seven private study rooms equipped with electronic whiteboards and other technologies for group and one-on-one research • Seating for more than 60 laptop computer users to access Central Library’s free WiFi • Space for 30 workstations with traditional software packages, as well as advanced, memory-intensive graphic design and video editing programs • A help desk that provides information and innovative on-demand training

For more information on the new Information Commons and what you can expect, visit us online at www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/central/infocommons.jsp.

As kids and teens return to school after summer break, Brooklyn Public Library’s Multicultural Internship Program (MIP) is back too! Returning for its third year, MIP is a wonderful opportunity for energetic, high-performing high school students who are interested in learning more about library careers and giving back to their communities. Teens who are accepted into this competitive program attend fun trainings and interesting electives and volunteer in one of our 60 library locations for approximately 8 to 10 hours a week! MIP requires 200 service hours between November 2011 and June 2012. You can apply for MIP through the end of October. Find more information at www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/mip.
