DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Summer’s Here! There is nothing like the summer sunshine to encourage us to get out of our homes and explore the world. Whether that means rediscovering your own neighborhood or traveling to a vacation destination in a far-off location, Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is here to help inspire your next adventure. If international travel is on the agenda, BPL can be your first stop in preparing for your trip. In addition to having myriad travel guides to borrow, starting this summer BPL will be the only library system to be a federally certified Passport Acceptance Facility. Passport processing services are available in the Central Library Lobby. See page 8 for more information. If your summer plans keep you closer to home, our Summer Reading 2011 program— program—One World, Many Stories—can take you to distant lands through literature. The program kicks off on June 9 on the steps of Central Library with an all-day event featuring activities, music and entertainment as we register patrons of all ages for Summer Reading. Wherever you find yourself this summer, keep reading. It is a fun and important way to keep your mind sharp. See page 4 for more about Summer Reading 2011.

One World, Many Stories Brooklyn Public Library is a host to the diverse faces and cultures of Brooklynites who use our free resources. These real people consider the Library an important part of their lives, much like you.

Thanks to photographer Joey O’Loughlin for this series of pictures. To see more, visit Central Library’s Lobby Gallery beginning June 9 to see her full exhibition, One World, Many Stories.

Tristan Regist, a 12-year-old Dyker Heights/Flatbush resident, participates in writing workshops. One of his poems was selected by the American Opera Society to be set to music and performed. Tristan and four of his siblings will be participating in Summer Reading.

Our digital offerings continue to grow to help our patrons access our collections. Thanks to recent funding from the federal Broadband Technology Opportunities Program, we are increasing the speed of access and number of PCs and laptops, and hosting more digital literacy workshops at locations throughout the Borough. See page 7 for details. Through large and small donations, BPL is able to serve thousands of Brooklynites every day. This summer will be filled with new programs and activities; however, BPL still faces daunting challenges to our funding. With a proposed cut of upwards of 30% to our 2012 budget, the Library would be faced with choices that would deeply impact our communities. That is why your help is critical. Every donation helps us continue to provide the books, materials and programs that make us a necessary resource in all communities. Donate at your local library or online at www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/support.

Fatima Younus, an 18-year-old student at Kingsborough Community College, was born in Pakistan before settling in Bensonhurst with her family. She participated in the Library’s Multicultural Internship Program last year.

Thank you and have a wonderful summer! Very truly,

Linda E. Johnson

Rana Abu Sbaih is a regular at Bay Ridge Library. She and her husband, Zafir Tawil, are Palestinian Americans. The couple has three children who have participated in RIF, Toddler Time and Summer Reading at the Library.

Thank You Champion Supporters! Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is proud to partner with our 2011 Corporate Champions. Corporate Champions generously support BPL with a gift of $25,000 or more. These contributions support programs and services that help Brooklynites achieve their goals at every life stage. If you are interested in supporting BPL as a Corporate Champion or would like more information, please contact Brian Leidy, manager of corporate relations, at 718.230.2207 or b.leidy@brooklynpubliclibrary.org. Cliff Rawson is an indie rock musician from Greenpoint. He uses Central Library for peace and quiet, and to get work done, so he appreciates the free WiFi, books and resources.

FEATURED STORIES

SPEAK UP FOR YOUR

Time Is Running Out to Support Our Shelves! Brooklyn Public Library’s 2011 Support Our Shelves campaign is in full swing, and we’d like to thank everyone who has already contributed to the purchase of books, DVDs and eBooks for all of our libraries. We’d also like to thank our lead sponsor, Con Edison. Additional support has been received from Brooklyn Community Foundation, Durst Organization/New York Water Taxi, Mike and Denise Reiss, and several BPL trustees. Thanks also to Brooklyn Industries for selling our “I BPL” T-shirts in March and April.

LIBRARY!

So far, your generosity has helped us raise $200,000 toward the purchase of 40,000 new library materials, but we’re not there yet. We still need your help!

Photo: © Philip Greenberg

Through June 30, donate to any one of BPL’s locations in the amount that is best for you. Every contribution, from $1 to $1,000, counts. Pick up a Support Our Shelves envelope from your local library or visit https://bpl.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/donate.

Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is facing a potential $25.2 million budget cut to our city funding. A cut of this size would reduce city support to BPL by almost one-third and have devastating consequences for YOUR library. BPL would be forced to make these changes:

Brooklyn’s libraries are community centers critical to the health and vibrancy of the neighborhoods they serve. Don’t let budget cuts limit our ability to continue offering a diverse catalog of materials! Support Our Shelves and give back where it matters most.

Buy a BPL T-shirt or Tote Bag to Support Your Library

• Close neighborhood libraries • Reduce hours of service at all neighborhood libraries that remain open • Offer hundreds of thousands of fewer books, CDs and DVDs • Eliminate tens of thousands of programs for children, teens and adults, including job assistance Photo: © Philip Greenberg

Especially during these tough times, Brooklynites need their library more than ever. Speak up for your library and let your voice be heard!

You can buy a BPL T-shirt ($20) or tote bag ($5)* at the Open Book Café by Mambo, located in the lobby of Central Library.

Visit https://bpl.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/speakup to directly contact the Mayor and members of the City Council to tell them how important the Library is to you. Thanks for your support during these troubled times!

Proceeds go toward new library materials for all Brooklynites.

Johnson, Interim Executive Director. “These improvements will enhance the library services BPL can and should be offering in neighborhoods such as Fort Hamilton.” Stop in and visit Fort Hamilton Library to see all of the great improvements!
