Australia confirms participation university students, will launch publicity campaigns for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea in various parts of the world during their summer holidays. The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea said the “Expo SNS (Social Networking Service) Supporters” voluntary online publicity group will be funding their activities with money generated from part-time work and project funding. They will be using Yeosu Expo publications to promote the global event.
Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Korea's President Lee Myung-bak at the summit meeting held in Seoul on April 25 Australia’s Prime Minister Julia Eileen Gillard telephoned President Lee Myung-bak on June 10 to state Australia’s intention to join Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea. Australia had been considering participation in the Expo given its close relations with Korea and the importance of the Expo as a global gathering but remained undecided due to tightened fiscal measures taken since the new government was inaugurated. Continued efforts by the Korean government to encourage Australia’s participation in the Expo, including a personal request by President Lee Myung-bak to Australian Prime Minister Gillard at the April summit talks, helped to turn the tide.

Nam Yu-song and nine other students from the University of Seoul will be traveling to seven countries – the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, and Italy – from July 5 to August 9. This group of students from South Jeolla Province, but residing in Seoul, has adopted this initiative in the name of giving back to society.
"We expect that Australia’s participation will bring us a step closer to the successful hosting of the Expo given that it is the leader of the Oceania region and a key nation in terms of maritime affairs," said Bae Young-han, Director General for External Cooperation of the Organizing Committee. "We will provide every possible support for Australia in its preparations for the Expo." Australia became the 98th country to express their intention to participate in Yeosu Expo. The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea said it plans to monitor and air in real-time the activities of the student volunteers through social networking service sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, as a means of increasing public support. While it is typical of the Expo oragnizers to cover the airfares of most voluntary promotional campaigns, what makes this support group of university students unique is that these members are pouring their own savings into the cause. “Yeosu Expo is the biggest international event taking place currently in Korea, so it will serve as an excellent opportunity to raise global recognition of our country and the Yeosu region,” said Kim from the U.S. tour. “We hope our efforts will make even the slightest contribution to holding a successful Expo by raising the profile of the event not only at home but also abroad,” she added.
Yeosu Expo presented to overseas travel agencies The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea held a promotion event on June 2 for major travel agencies participating in the 2011 Korea International Travel Mart (KITM). Three hundred participants attended the KITM, including representatives from overseas travel agencies selling Korea tour packages in Japan, China, Southeast Asia and North America along with local travel agents and media.

Fisheries experience zones and ocean forest: unique and innovative When people visit Yeosu during the summer of next year, they will be able to experience the life of the ocean from the Korean coast to the South Pacific. This marine life will be presented through a 4D virtual underwater exhibition where visitors can try tuna fishing and maneuver the fishing boat. The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea is creating two Fisheries Experience Zones, one nearby the Energy Park and another off the coast of Odong Island. Each will be 3,000 square meters.
Fisheries Experience Zones (Coastal & Deep Sea) The Fisheries Experience Zone for deep sea fisheries located near the Energy Park will allow visitors to witness both state-of-the-art and traditional fishing industries. Visitors will also have the chance to catch an imaginary tuna fish on aboard a model 2,000-ton deep-sea fishing boat.

and provide home for tropical fish and big oceanic fish species like the yellowtail. “The Fisheries Experience Zones and the Ocean Forest will give visitors the chance to see and better understand the ocean,” Kwon Oh-deok, Deputy Director General for Maritime and Fisheries Exhibitions, said. “These on-site hands-on activities will illustrate the Expo’s theme – The Living Ocean and Coast – while at the same time, delivering the message that humanity can only promote a sustainable fisheries industry if fishermen take on the mindset of managing marine resources rather than being simply catchers of fish.”
Along the perimeter of Odong Island will lay the ocean forest measuring 30 meters in width and 90 meters in length, which is about half the size of a football field. Just like trees are planted in the forests, seaweeds will be planted in the ocean forest, providing optimal living conditions for diversity of marine life. This ocean forest will be located near the Fisheries Experience Zone (Coastal),

Expo Preview Theme Pavilion The Theme Pavilion of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea will be the country’s first aquatic ocean structure and will stand two stories high off the Expo site. The building, named “One Ocean,” conceptualizes the ocean as a continuous body of water divided into principal areas, with each exhibition area as an open fluid space. The design features an organic shape, resembling a marine organism

While the experience of catching tuna fish in the vast, deep South Pacific waters can be vividly felt through a 4D simulation, visitors can also see the storage facilities and processing stages of the fish. Pavilion Overview Theme: Coexistence of the ocean and humanity The Theme Pavilion will enlighten visitors on the preciousness of the seas and coasts, while advocating the coexistence of humanity and the vast oceans expected to be a reality by 2050. The exhibitions will offer opportunities for visitors to discover the mysteries and true value of the ocean, which is so close to us, and is yet just as strange and unknown to us as the outer space.
Exhibition Overview The Living Ocean Vi s i t o r s w i l l b e a l l o w e d g l i m p s e o f explorations and ocean research activities being carried out by various research centers around the world including Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Also, our beautiful Planet Earth seen from Korea’s first geostationary satellite Cheollian will be introduced.
Ocean under Threat Visitors will be able to identify with the pain and grief being faced by marine creatures, which stems from such growing and threatening issues such as desertification and the warming of the waters, along with tsunamis that wreak havoc in the ocean. The Show: Dugong and Man Man and Dugong, the only living representative of the once diverse family Dugongidae, build a friendly and loving relationship as they interact with each other, and together open up a brighter future for all humankind. Dwindling Marine Life Visitors are able to take a closer look at marine creatures facing extinction due to overfishing and environmental pollution. Measures to protect the marine life and live in harmonious coexistence with the sea are to be sought out together with the visitors.
Value of the Sea The mysteries and the hidden values of the ocean are uncovered as visitors are taken through the various different coastal areas around the world, and the lives of people living in coastal environments.
