UN Delegation Pays a Visit to Yeosu for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea on Aug. 16 and 17 to consult on preparations for the world body’s participation in the Expo. The delegation was comprised of six high-ranking UN officials including the Special Advisor to the Secretary General of the UN, Kim Won-soo; the UN Commissioner General for the UN Pavilion 2012 Yeosu Korea, Samuel Koo; the UN Expo officer, Zaw Win; and the UNEP Consultant, Mia Turner. The UN and the Organizing Committee tentatively agreed to assign a 900-square-meter exhibition area to the UN Pavilion.

Ocean-and environment-related international agencies, including the United Nations, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and the U.N. Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) spread the importance of the oceans and coasts under the slogan “One UN” at Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea. Australia Aims for the Most Popular Pavilion at Yeosu Expo Australia stated its ambitious goal to make its pavilion the most popular one at Yeosu Expo. Australia is the 98th country that notified its participation in the Expo. It sent a government delegation to the Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea on August 25, and the delegation reviewed all the preparations for the Expo and had indepth discussions with the Organizing Committee for two days. Despite its austerity measures, Australia confirmed its participation in Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea in early June. Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard decided to participate in the Expo after she was asked by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak during the Korea-Australia summit held in Seoul on Apr. 25. After the summit, Prime
The delegation held discussions with the Organizing Committee concerning the exhibition plan of the UN Pavilion and celebration of the UN Day during the Expo. They also toured the Expo site, including the UN Pavilion module, and visited the Yeosu Expo 2012 Promotion Center. The UN has made continued efforts to stress the importance of ocean conservation and global warming mitigation. These efforts include the conclusion of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982, the launch of the Earth Summit in 1992, and the setting up of the UN Oceans and Coastal Areas Network (UN Oceans), a UN inter-agency coordinating mechanism on oceans and coastal issues in 2003. Participation of the UN in Yeosu Expo is expected to raise international awareness on the importance of the ocean and coasts.
Minister Gillard soon phoned President Lee Myung-bak to notify Australia’s participation, which showed her high level of interest in the event. Australia is currently very active in making preparations. Director of Australia Pavilion Kevin Nixon said, “We are developing a variety of contents about the oceans and coasts in a way to stress the importance of responses to climate change in order to keep in step with the
theme of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea,” and he added, “We will be prepared to make our Australia Pavilion the most popular at Yeosu Expo.” The Organizing Committee and the Australian delegation have now finalized the size of the Australia Pavilion to be 917m 2 (Module 4 in Block D of the International Pavilion) and designated May 27 as the National Day of Australia. Day a participating country is expected to introduce its home country and its culture and traditions. On Australia’s National Day, Australia and South Korea plan to hold a joint performance featuring their traditional musical instruments.
Organizing Committee will then hold a joint international symposium entitled “Fight against Starvation through the Ocean” in August 2012. The FAO also promised to spare no efforts in preparing for the UN Pavilion exhibitions.
An MOU on Cooperation in Yeosu Expo Signed with the FAO
“Food Security under Climate Change” is the most pressing issue across the world due to the depletion of natural resources and surging grain prices. The United Nations’ 2011 State of the Future report projects that half of the world’s population will suffer from water shortage by 2025, and it also estimates that people consume natural resources 1.5 times faster than nature can replenish them.
The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Aug. 23 to seek solutions to the growing problem of global food shortages by turning attention to the vast potential of the oceans, the earth’s final frontier. Experts from the FAO will give presentations with the theme of “Food Security under Climate Change” at the international symposium to be held in Incheon on Sept. 28 and 29 by the Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea. The FAO and the
The Assistant Director-General for Fisheries and Aquaculture of the FAO Árni M. Mathiesen said, “Yeosu Expo is the world event most worthy of attention in that it is seeking solutions to the impending food shortage problem by turning attention to the vast potential that the oceans offer.” He added, “The FAO will become an important UN partner of Yeosu Expo by making the Expo known to member countries of the FAO.”

Expo Preview The Big-O:
A Spectacular Night Multi-media Show Performed over the Sea fountain, piping and wiring for diverse performance equipment are gathered; it was put into the sea after being produced on dry land. The Big-O project team reviewed the design many times due to complex marine construction technologies and adopted heavy lifting originally proposed by Hyundai Engineering & Construction, the builder of this project.
The O Structure
The Big-O is an O-shaped marine exhibition space that gives the impression of a rias coast by putting to use the area’s V-shaped breakwaters. This eco-friendly space will be created along the 2.5km coastal line to help visitors get closer to the ocean and coast and better experience the theme of Yeosu Expo. Unlike other pavilions based on digital technology, the Big-O will be a space where visitors can experience firsthand a sandy beach, a Mongdol (gravel) beach and even taste desalinated seawater. Within the space of the Big-O, a 45 m-high “The O,” the 120 m-wide, 3-row fan-shaped
sea fountain and the Floating Stage that is submersible will be installed. The O-shaped structure “The O” was designed by show designer Mark Fisher, and it borrows the initial O from “ocean” and gives an impression of a door towards the future. State-of -the-art equipment is also installed here to produce special effects such as laser light shows, fireworks, flames, fog and water curtains to create a fantastic experience along with the fountain show. The 26.6 m-wide, 9.6 m-high and 4,000-ton podium installed at the bottom of “The O” is an oval-shaped space where the sea
The sea fountain is installed with a pump spraying water up to 70 m high and has a 360-degree rotating fan nozzle and it can show hologram images through the projector up on “The O”. The fountain will work every 30 minutes to liven up the atmosphere during the day and run for the Night Multi -media Show with “The O” at night. At the same time, performances will feature special guests on the stage and aquatic performance festivals, allowing the audience to experience hard-to-see performances. The Big-O is a landmark embodying the theme “the Living Ocean and Coast” and will show the future image of the ocean to the audience from around the world through the large-scale “Night Multi-media Show”.

Special Contribution Kang Dong-Suk
Chairman of the Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea
Meaning of PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics and Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea The South Korean City of Pyeongchang won the right to host the 2018 Winter Olympics after two previous bids had failed. It was the result of patience and painstaking efforts by the leaders and town residents who had never given up hope for over 10 years until they could convey the happy news to the Korean people. Their persevering efforts until final success particularly impressed me, being in charge of preparing for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea. The PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics and Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea have many things in common. They both draw international attention, underwent trials in the bidding stages to become hosts and have national significance. The PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics are only the second Olympic Games to be held in Korea, the first being the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul. Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea is the second International Exposition to be held in Korea after the 1993 Daejeon Expo. Looking back, I think we can say with certainty that both the Olympics and the Expo contributed greatly to the rapid development of the nation. Pyeongchang and Yeosu are different from other cities that hosted world events in that the two are both relatively underestimated and less-developed small cities, unlike inter-
Pyeongchang, Korea
nationally well-known cities such as Seoul, Busan and Gwangju. It is almost a miracle to have the Olympic Games and the World Expo in Pyeongchang and Yeosu respectively, one a small country town in Gangwon province and the other a small city at the tip of the Korean peninsula. But what was considered the miracle turns into reality. In Pyeongchang, 13 stadiums and the Alpensia Cluster are under construction. And the Wonju-Gangneung double track railroad, which has been a long-cherished wish of Gangwon province residents, will be constructed. When this line is opened, it will take only 70 minutes from the Seoul metropolitan area to Pyeongchang. In Yeosu, nine pavilions, including the offshore Theme Pavilion, the largest aquarium in Korea and the Floating Stage are under construction. Yeosu will be only three hours away from the Seoul metropolitan area when the
Yeosu, Korea
extended Korean high-speed railroad for KTX is completed and new highways are open. Korea has long been an exemplary case of economic development, and both the vision of Pyeongchang to be a “Winter Sports and Leisure City” and the vision of Yeosu to be a “Marine Leisure City” will help South Korea take another leap forward. The two towns also have operated similar educational programs with the slogan of “Share Your Talent.” The Organizing Committee for PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics has been operating the “Dream Program” for 8 years since 2004 to give the youth in underdeveloped and tropical countries where it never snows a chance to experience winter sports. The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea has been also offering an educational program for 3 years since 2009 to help underdeveloped countries solve ocean-related problems. Korea used to be an impoverished country receiving aid from other countries but is now one of the advanced economies to host world events in the spirit of sharing. Unlike the Olympics, the World Expo is a festival of science & technology and culture & arts. In Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea, held for 93 days from May 12, 2012, about 100 countries will participate and show their best exhibitions with the theme “the Living Ocean and Coast.” I hope that people all around the world show their great interest and support for Yeosu and Pyeongchang to successfully host the Expo and then the Winter Olympics, setting new visions for the future.
