President Lee Myung-bak buys admission tickets President Lee Myung-bak visited the Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea on October 5, 2011 to celebrate the official opening of the Jeolla KTX line for which Yeosu is the final destination. After the ceremony President Lee purchased admission tickets. He was accompanied by Kwon Do-youp, Minister of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, Park Joon-yung, Governor of South Jeolla Province, along with local citizens. During the lunch with the
Official Participants Exceed 100 Countries The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea announced that in September it had signed Participation Contracts with five countries including Spain, Singapore and Tunisia. To date, a total of 23 countries have signed a Participation Contract. Once the Participation Contract is signed, the preparation for the Expo begins in earnest. With the theme of Explore Spain, the Spain pavilion will showcase the nation’s glorious past as a leading maritime power with such accomplishments as the discovery of America, while also demonstrating Spain’s presence in marine technology with an exhibition on the diversity of oceanic life and various other programs. Singapore, with the theme of Transformation to a Modern City, is preparing a variety of exhibitions that show its development from a small port city to a sophisticated world-class city as well as achievements in capturing and using rainwater, recycling of domestic wastewater,
locals and staff members of the Organizing Committee, President Lee said, “Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea will be a great opportunity to introduce the beautiful southern coast of Korea to the world and to help South Jeolla Province achieve remarkable growth. I am sure that the Expo will be a great success thanks to your painstaking preparations.” The price of an admission ticket for the Expo is 33,000 won (about USD 31) for adults, 25,000 won (about USD 23) for teenagers and students, and 19,000 won (about USD 18) for children and senior citizens. Tunisia, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, will have an exhibition on its devoted efforts to protect marine resources in the Mediterranean Sea. When the Philippines was declared to be the 100th country to participate in the Expo, the Organizing Committee achieved its goal of hosting 100 countries to the Expo with the addition of 8 participating international organizations. The Organizing Committee has been trying all the possible channels to invite participating countries, including contact and negotiations with foreign countries through diplomatic offices abroad, and two-party or multiparty meetings with
high-ranking officials of prospective participating countries. As part of the efforts by the Korean government, President Lee Myung-bak encouraged countries that are yet to confirm their participation to join the Expo soon. In addition, he continues to ask for support of other heads of state during summit meetings. Official Participants will begin installing their exhibits in November this year when the exhibits spaces will be handed over to them. The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea hosted an International Symposium under the title of Smart Utilization and Development in the Ocean on September 29 in Incheon. Since 2009 the Organizing Committee has hosted various symposiums in collaboration with other institutions. For example, it has already hosted 3 symposiums this year alone and another one is coming

Some of the important issues discussed are: the development direction of sustainable future ocean cities ; solution to the global food crisis by utilizing oceanic resources; the fishing industry’s countermeasures against climate change; international cooperative measures against marine debris pollution; and the development of future-oriented maritime security technologies and cooperation among Northeast Asian countries.

France and Monaco Unveil Their Pavilion Plans and Mascots for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea The French embassy in Seoul held a press conference at the French Cultural Center in Seoul on September 28 to officially unveil the France Pavilion plan for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea and to introduce its eyecatching mascot named Sogeumi. José Frèches, Director of the France Pavilion, successfully managed the France Pavilion of the Expo 2010 Shanghai China as its director. During the press conference, it was announced that actor and model Fabien Yun was appointed as the honorary ambassador of the France Pavilion. Monaco will also have a significant pavilion. The theme of the Monaco Pavilion is: Monaco’s historical commitment to protecting the Environment, Seas and Oceans. The theme is well-suited to the Yeosu Expo’s theme of the Living Ocean and Coast. The logo of the Monaco Pavilion symbolically depicts the coast of Monaco and embodies the waters of the Mediterranean.
Monacus, the mascot of the Monaco Pavilion, is a Mediterranean monk seal. Mediterranean monk seals are one of the world’s most endangered sea animals with only about 600 left in the Mediterranean. Monacus represents Monaco’s commitment to preserving biodiversity in the Mediterranean.

The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea is striving to attract Chinese tourists to Yeosu Expo. As part of its promotional campaign, the Organizing Committee had a promotional tour in China from August 29 to September 2. The Organizing Committee made stops in three cities, Beijing, Jinan and Hangzhou, which are presumed to have the largest number of potential visitors. In Beijing, presentations were given to journalists, officials from major government agencies and public institutions, and travel agents. About 50 journalists from major Chinese TV networks and news-
papers attended the session for the press and attested their interest in the Expo. Kang Dong-suk, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, led a five-day promotional tour in China, paying cordial visits to Chinese government officials and giving presentations on the Expo. The Organizing Committee aims to attract Chinese officials sent abroad annually by Chinese central and local governments for education and training. It is estimated that over 300,000 Chinese will visit Yeosu Expo.
The Organizing Committee’s Publicity Events Generate Excitement in Japan Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea is being strongly promoted in Japan. The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea participated in major events held in Japan over a two week period to introduce and promote the Expo to local people. The target cities include Tokyo, Sendai and Fukuoka. The Organizing Committee gave presentations during a meeting with the Board of Directors of the All Nippon Travel Agents Association (ANTA) in Sendai as well as a meeting with ANTA branch managers. The Organizing Committee also introduced the Expo in a working-group meeting of the Korea Association of Travel Agents (KATA) and the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) on September 28. The Organizing Committee participated in the JATA World Travel Fair, the largest travel fair in Japan, from September 29 to October 2, operating a booth and having business consultation with travel agents.
On the eve of the Korea-Japan Festival 2011 held on October 1 and 2, the Organizing Committee took full advantage of the festival to gear up for the promotion of the Expo. The Organizing Committee and honorary ambassador Kuroda Fukumi introduced Yeosu Expo to politicians, government officials and businessmen at a reception of the Festival and to the Japanese public at Roppongi Hills Arena, where the Festival was held.

Volunteer Interviews Kick off Last month the Organizing Committee launched a volunteer program to select 13,000 volunteers who will assist visitors at the Expo site. Interviews were conducted in Korean, English, Chinese, Japanese and French. Interviews were conducted by telephone as well for applicants who were unable to be present at an interview session. The recruiting continues until the end of November this year.
Fusion of Art and Technology, Dreaming of the World, on the Rooftop Dreaming of the World, a sculpture by Kim Kyung-min, who seeks slice of life themes and delineates them with humor and satire is placed on the rooftop of the office of the Organizing Committee. This will be an unconventional yet fun and memorable attraction for visitors to the Expo site.

How we all must contribute to the success of the Yeosu EXPO The success of a World Exposition does not depend on any particular person or group but on the concerted effort of each and every member of all the teams and persons involved in the EXPO and - on the attitudes of the citizens of Yeosu. But what exactly can we all do to secure the success? The hosting of such a major event consists of a myriad of elements that all put together will eventually bring success. Let me briefly refer to some important factors in the making of a successful EXPO 2012 in Yeosu.
International relations Being an international event, the greatest importance must be put on international relations and the international image of the EXPO. Therefore all the responsible persons and departments must endeavour to establish and maintain the best possible relationship with the rest of the world that in one way or another is involved in the EXPO. Thus relations with the international EXPO organization, the BIE, should be prioritized and at the same time dealings with the par-
ticipating countries should be as smooth as possible. These efforts will surely help project the image of a welcoming EXPO.
International promotion In order to promote the knowledge of the event outside of Korea, now is the time to intensify the effort to make the EXPO known both in the neighbouring countries as well as further abroad. This promotion will not only result in more visits but also spread the knowledge of the EXPO to people who will not necessarily come but who will need to know about the EXPO and its theme.
National awareness Koreans are a very populous and very busy people. Therefore it is not an easy task to make everybody aware of the EXPO and of its theme. Every person connected with the EXPO must therefore look upon it as her/his duty to spread the knowledge of the event as much as possible. This can of course be done by person-to-person or via the social networks like Facebook and others. A strong effort by each colleague in the great project is absolutely necessary.
Theme-related promotion EXPO Yeosu has an extraordinarily good and important theme. This has not always been the case in the history of the EXPOS. Therefore the Korean circles within the academic and the political world must communicate to their connections the importance and the relevance of the theme in today’s world. This could ensure a wide acceptance and also procure important visits to the EXPO by personalities in the world science, politics etc.
Individual responsibility It is not enough that the different departments in the organization fulfill their duties as departments and teams. It is really the task of every single person working for the EXPO to know as much of the whole of the project as possible and to know well the theme and the scope of the exhibition. This is a useful and practical way of spreading the facts and the message of this international
event as widely as possible.
The citizens of Yeosu I have been at EXPOS in the past where the citizens of the host city – though it sounds incredible - left much to desire as to hospitality, knowledge of the EXPO and a positive attitude. Therefore it is highly recommendable to see to it that the population of the city of Yeosu and surroundings get all the relevant information on the EXPO and that they are made to understand the importance of their own part in the success of the event. If they are welcoming, well informed, friendly and open, then their city will draw the maximum of advantages from the EXPO and their city will be that much a city after the EXPO. I cannot stress enough the importance of the active participation of the Yeosu citizens.
During the EXPO The life at an EXPO can be very stressing. Working hours are even longer than before and there are many problems to face – some of them completely unforeseen. Also problems of a personal character will come up - very often. This is due to the fact that the event is of great intensity, which is contagious. This all contributes to make the foreign staffs and the local personnel at times tired, edgy and stressed. This situation must be expected and measures to handle the stress and irritability must be taken in advance. These measures can consist of recommending to Korean personnel that as soon as possible after the arrival of the foreign staffs, they establish good personal relations with their international co-workers, cooperate with them and show them the ins and outs of the EXPO. Also the Korean staff should be made aware that situations of stress can arise and that they must “be prepared.” EXPO 2012 is heading for a success – I have no doubt whatsoever, but with the above observations in mind I feel that you can further ensure the great success we all so much work and wish for.

Here’s one area of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea that will give visitors an opportunity to see the contemporary achievements that have been made to preserve and use the oceans wisely: the Ocean & Coast Best Practice Area (OCBPA). It’s an empirical exhibition space full of intriguing educational exhibits and public attractions. The OCBPA presents the vision of Yeosu Expo to realize “Coexistence of the Oceans and Humankind,” showing the world’s best practices for the oceans and coasts regarding science and technology, policies and knowhow drawn from 14 organizations. The venue lies on the second floor of the Theme Pavilion, the first offshore pavilion in Korea. In addition, the OCBPA will be used as a venue for academic conferences, events, seminars and presentations by professionals. Visitors will be able to get information instantly by scanning QR codes with their smartphones. Rare specimens, mock-ups and actual objects exhibited in this area will give the audience a vivid illusion of actually being in the ocean.
Next to the exhibition area is the communication lab, a very special space available in the OCBPA. This lab is designed to facilitate communication with visitors. Speakers from Classification

A. The portal website of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea serves as a gateway to the Expo providing a wealth of information. The English website was first opened in November 2008. French, Japanese and Chinese websites were added in 2009. The foreign-language websites were then upgraded and reopened on August 31, 2011.
