Among the 105 countries participating in the Expo, 83 have already applied to offer a special performance on their National Days. Each country will have a National Day on which it will be given an opportunity to showcase its cultural heritage. The National Day events include hoisting of the national flag, celebrity hand printing, cultural performances and a special reception.
Year Two of the Yeosu Project: Technology Sharing with Developing Countries The advanced marine technologies of Korea are being shared with developing countries, including aquaculture technology, integrated coastal management know-how, and expertise on biological diversity survey. The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea is starting execution of the second year plan for the Yeosu Project. The Yeosu Project is an aid program designed to assist developing countries in dealing with marine challenges. The Yeosu Project is an innovative international cooperation program that supports joint research and dispatches experts to address marine environmental issues that developing countries are facing.
The National Day of Korea is set for August 1. The Organizing Committee is preparing a series of magnificent events for the Korean National Day. Currently, China, Japan and Spain are planning a variety of captivating cultural performances and even a sailboat exhibition in line with the theme of the Expo. Visitors will take on a “journey around the world” during which they will experience not only ocean-themed exhibitions but also cultural performances from nations all over the world. In addition to their National Day events, participating countries will provide various cultural events including traditional dances, folk performances and pop performances for up to full 7days during the Expo.
A total of 10 billion won (approx. $9 million) is being invested until 2012 in four stages. For Year Two of the Yeosu Project, Guatemala, Grenada, Sri Lanka and Tanzania were chosen as the target nations since they are experiencing difficulties managing their
marine resources due to overfishing and coastal erosion. The project will provide a wide variety of support to these countries for one year, including conducting joint research, dispatching marine experts, offering training programs, and donating research equipment.

Reinventing the Korea Pavilion as a Hydrogen Fuel-based Building Hydrogen fuel cells, which produce no carbon dioxide, will be introduced at the Korea Pavilion. The Korea Pavilion was originally designed to showcase LNG fuel cells for an environment-friendly exposition. However, the Organizing Committee decided on switching to hydrogen fuel cells, forging cooperation with the Hyundai Motor Company who owns proprietary technology for hydrogen fuel cells. Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity by reacting hydrogen with oxygen and do not produce any carbon dioxide unlike LNG fuel cells. Manufacturing the hydrogen fuel cells takes about 5 months.

The Organizing Committee anticipates that the hydrogen fuel-based Korea Pavilion will further raise national awareness of climate change and greenhouse gas reduction.

Reservation System for Priority Entrance to Popular Pavilions
Virtual image of the Smartphone application for Yeosu Expo
One of the biggest concerns for visitors to the past international expositions has been the long wait time at the entrance of pavilions. Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea will solve this problem with an innovative reservation system that will utilize the Internet, a simple Smartphone application and automated kiosks. The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea announced that it would introduce a 100% web-based reservation system for eight key pavilions: the Theme Pavilion, the Climate & Environment Pavilion, the Marine Industry & Technology Pavilion, the
Marine Civilization & City Pavilion, the Marine Life Pavilion, the Korea Pavilion, the Ocean & Coast Best Practice Area, and the Aquarium. There will be two choices available for reserving tickets to these pavilions: one will be through the Internet and the other by making a reservation onsite. Each visitor can make a reservation for up to two pavilions each day. Only those who will have already made reservations will be able to enter the above-mentioned eight pavilions. No reservation will be required for other pavilions. The Priority Entrance System, will greatly reduce wait time. Internet reservations will begin on April 1, 2012 on the Expo website for those who have already purchased an admission ticket. For onsite reservation, visitors may use a Smartphone application designed for the priority entrance or one of the reservation kiosks in front of the eight pavilions. The Organizing Committee is also preparing street performances and other fun events to entertain visitors queuing up in the wait line.

Ubiquitous Expo Digital Gallery, Amalgamation of Marine Culture and Art The exhibitions of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea will include cutting-edge information technology. A classical example of the integration of exhibitions and IT will be the Expo Digital Gallery (EDG). The ceiling of the EDG is covered with huge LED panels presenting a dazzling variety of surreal images that will make visitors feel as though they are in a submarine tunnel. The LED panels form the canopy of the central promenade directly connected to the Yeosu Expo Station. The central promenade spans 415 meters in length with a width of 21 meters. It will surely enthrall visitors.

Interactivity is yet another interesting feature of the EDG. The EDG will provide an interactive experience for the audience by allowing them to directly post personal messages and pictures on the ceiling, which also displays marvelous and ever-changing scenes of the ocean. The Organizing Committee is establishing an optimal infrastructure that will offer visitors the most convenient and friendly environment possible by utilizing IT to the fullest. A wide variety of information technologies will be applied to pavilions, especially the EDG, to maximize artistic creativity. The Organizing Committee will cooperate with IT companies to utilize robots, portals, games and more - to showcase state-of-the-art images of the ocean. With the vision of presenting a U-EXPO (Ubiquitous Expo), Yeosu Expo will be a “Smart” exposition that utilizes IT better than anytime in the past.
