‘The Mermaid Legend of Geomun-do’ to Be Re-created by a Master French Director

The Statue of the Legendary Mermaid in Geomun-do

In a short film being produced for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea, the renowned French film director Charles de Meaux will revive the legend of the Mermaid of Geomun-do, an islet off the southern coast of Korea. The legend of the mermaid Shinjike Yeo, a mythical creature believed to be the guardian of the island, will be made into a film and shown to audiences at the Expo Digital Gallery (EDG). Director de Meaux said, “I was quite intrigued by the legend of Shinjike because it deals with the story of an Asian mermaid whose characteristics are

different from those of Western mermaids such as Lorelei or Ariel as well as the fact that the Shinjike legend was well preserved with vivid details.” He then added, “The film will utilize a 3D holographic sound system, which has never been used in Korea and only a few times worldwide, creating artistic sounds and imagery.”

3D holographic sound is a new kind of sound system with which the direction of the sound moves in all directions, allowing viewers to feel as if they are in the actual scenes. Charles de Meaux’s team traveled all over the world to collect sounds and images of the seven famous coasts around the world, including the Dead Sea, Greenland, Capri, and Busan. The collected sounds and images will be woven into the story of Shinjike to create a unique and extraordinary film.
