About 200 people, including Expo SNS supporters, volunteers, the members of the Organizing Committee for EXPO 2012 Yeosu Korea and their family gathered around the Expo’s landmark, the Big-O, on New Year’s Day 2012, wishing for a successful hosting of EXPO 2012 Yeosu Korea. Chairman Kang Dong-suk of the Organizing Committee said, “We at the Organizing Committee are gearing up for making Yeosu Expo an extraordinary success.”

Anti-disaster monitoring technology is being transferred to Southeast Asian countries to help them better prepare for earthquakes, tsunamis and other maritime accidents, such as oil leaks. The Yeosu Project, which aims at providing support for maritime affairs in developing countries, began its education and training programs on February 14.
The United Nations has officially informed the Organizing Committee of its intended participation at the Expo. The U.N. is expected to help significantly elevate the international profile of Yeosu Expo along with other international organizations that confirmed their participation such as OECD, GEF/PEMSEA.
On May 11, the Organizing Committee hosted a review meeting in Seoul to prepare a draft for the Yeosu Declaration, jointly with the Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute.
Australia’s Prime Minister Julia Gillard telephoned President Lee Myung-bak on June 10 to state Australia’s intention to join Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea. The Korean government had shown continued efforts to encourage Australia’s participation in the Expo, including a personal request by President Lee Myung-bak to Australian Prime Minister Gillard at the April summit talks.

The online publicity forum “Expo SNS Supporters,� initiated by a group of Korean university students launched publicity campaigns for Yeosu Expo in various parts of the world during their summer holidays.
The Organizing Committee released the types, designs and prices of admission tickets. Prospective visitors are able to purchase tickets online. For further information, visit the Expo website at (http://eng.expo2012.or.kr/). Pre-sale will be going on until April 30, 2012, at a 5 percent discount rate.
The Organizing Committee hosted an international symposium under the title of Smart Utilization and Development in the Ocean on September 29 in Incheon. Some important issues discussed are the development direction of sustainable future ocean cities and international cooperative measures against marine debris pollution.
President Lee Myung-bak visited the Organizing Committee on October 5 to celebrate the official opening of the Jeolla KTX line for which Yeosu is the final destination. After the ceremony, President Lee purchased admission tickets.

China has become the first country to have the key to the International Pavilion. The handover ceremony was held at the International Pavilion on November 1.
An international symposium was held on November 10 in Yeosu to discuss revitalization of the regional economy by promoting marine industries. The international symposium, held under the title of Marine Industries and revitalization of Regional Economy, was hosted by the Organizing Committee and organized by the Korea Maritime Institute.
A 14 member-delegation of the Organizing Committee for EXPO 2012 Yeosu Korea, led by Kang Dong-suk, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, with Ambassador Lee Joon-hee, Commissioner of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea, participated in the 150th General Assembly of Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) held in Paris, France on November 22 and 23.
The final 13,000 applicants to work as volunteers during Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea were announced on August 31. The Organizing Committee offers volunteers online classes as well as offline group trainings in different regions of Korea.

The Third International Planning Meeting to Gather 106 Countries from Around the World
The Second International Planning Meeting was held from April 5 to 7, 2011 in Seoul
The Third International Planning Meeting for EXPO 2012 Yeosu Korea will be held from 7 to 9 February 2012 in Seoul and Yeosu, Korea. As the final official preparatory meeting, the third meeting will be dedicated to presenting the latest progress of preparations for Yeosu Expo on areas such as the installation of exhibitions, site operation, cultural and academic programs including National Day events and protocol arrangement, among others. An updated edition of Participation Guide will be distributed for Official Participants. In addition, the Meeting of the College of Commissioners of Section as well as the Constituent/First Meeting of the Steering Committee will be held on February 8. On the final day of the meeting, a full-day trip will be arranged to visit the Expo site in Yeosu. We sincerely hope that the Third International Planning Meeting will offer a fruitful opportunity to strengthen our cooperation and understanding in the final months leading to the unique global festival themed “The Living Ocean and Coast.�
