The Third International Planning Meeting of EXPO 2012 Yeosu Korea was held in Seoul and Yeosu from February 7 to 9. 375 delegation members from 101 countries and 7 international organizations were briefed on the progress of preparations for Yeosu Expo. Bilateral meetings between Official Participant and the Organizing Committee were arranged to discuss various issues, including accommodation, customs clearance and logistics, and financial support, during the Third International Planning Meeting. Steen Christensen, Commissioner of Denmark, was elected as the President of the College of Commissioners of Section and will concurrently serve as the Chairman of the Steering Committee. Three Vice Chairmen were elected as well - they are; Ambassador Claudio Moreno, Commissioner of Italy; Araki Yukiko, Commissioner of Japan; and Oumar Ould Abidine Sidi, Commissioner of Mauritania. that each region can have their voices heard. The Steering Committee agreed to have the next meeting on April 18 in Yeosu. And on the final day of the meeting, a full-day trip was arranged for the delegations to visit Yeosu. The delegation members were warmly welcomed by the officials of the Yeosu City Government and had a guided tour of the Expo site to see in person the progress in the construction of pavilions and facilities.

The Organizing Committee, the BIE, and the Expo ’90 Foundation (the Commemorative Foundation for the International Garden and Greenery
Exposition, Osaka, Japan, 1990) signed an agreement on the BIE-Cosmos Prize on February 9.
The BIE-Cosmos Prize, jointly awarded by the BIE and the Expo ’90 Foundation, was inaugurated in 2008 to encourage public participation in Expos. The prize is given to 10 nonprofit projects related to Expo themes. The top prize winner is given a cash award of €20,000. The award ceremony will be held at the Yeosu Expo site on August 11, the BIE Day. The application deadline for the award has been extended to March 21 and applications are being received via the BIE website (www.bie-paris.org) or e-mail (bie@bie-paris.org). The Ocean Leaders Camp Launched to Explore the World’s Best Practices in Marine Technology The appointment ceremony for the Ocean Leaders Camp was held in Seoul on February 8. The Ocean Leaders Camp comprised of five teams (fifteen people) will explore 13 local and international best practice cases in the marine field to promote the importance of the ocean at the Ocean and Coast Best Practice Area (OCBPA) and the successful hosting of Yeosu Expo. At the appointment ceremony, the Eco-Ocean team had a presentation of the exploration plan for the Galápagos Islands and took the oath on behalf of the entire members of the Ocean Leaders Camp. The members of the Ocean Leaders Camp will first visit Royal Caribbean International on February 13.
Afterwards, they will pay a visit to Japan Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC),
the Charles Darwin Foundation, Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water), and Samsung Heavy Industry.

President Lee Myung-bak travelled to the Expo site by train along with Expo SNS Supporters and volunteers to attend a rally for the successful hosting of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea on February 1, with the opening day of the Expo only 104 days away.
The rally was held in the Multi-purpose Hall located on the first floor of the Korea Pavilion, which was first opened on that day, with about 800 attending including 9 governors and 6 mayors from across the country along with Yeosu citizens. The guests watched a

Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea has been selected as a must-see event in 2012 by major foreign media. CNN Go, an internet travel site operated by U.S. news company CNN, selected Yeosu Expo as one of the top events to see in 2012, saying “With the hopeful theme of the Living Ocean and Coast, the Expo promises to be one of the most stylish and sophisticated World Fairs yet.” Other must-see events selected by CNN Go include the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 14th European Football Championship.
A special event was also held at the Cheonggye Square in Seoul from February 2 to 5 to commemorate the beginning of the 100-day countdown and wish for the successful hosting of Yeosu Expo.

Creative Promotional Activities to Attract More Overseas Visitors

A group of 180 Chinese travel agents and journalists visited Yeosu on January 6 to develop tour packages. The Chinese government has built one of the largest individual pavilions among the 106 participating countries on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and China this year. The China Pavilion plans to hold an exhibition under the title Ren Hai Xiang Yi (人海相依) , which means that human beings and the oceans are mutually dependent and co-exist. In addition, the heads of the overseas branch offices of the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) visited Yeosu on January 27 to exchange ideas on the
development of Expo tour packages for foreign visitors. They held a meeting at the Yeosu Expo 2012 Promotion Center and discussed issues including accommodation, transportation and exhibitions. They also watched Expo promotional videos and viewed exhibition contents. Kim Young-ho, head of the KTO Tokyo office, said he would actively conduct promotions to attract foreign visitors to Yeosu Expo. The Organizing Committee is continuously carrying out promotional activities to attract overseas visitors, including holding promotional tours in major overseas cities and inviting foreign journalists or travel agents to Yeosu.

Hyundai Motor Group and Kwang Ju Bank Purchase Expo Tickets
Hyundai Motor Group recently purchased 200,000 tickets for Yeosu Expo, affirming the group’s support for the successful hosting of the Expo. Another official sponsor of the Expo, Kwang Ju Bank, a major financial institution in the Gwangju and South Jeolla Province, also bought tickets worth about 400 million Korean Won. Their purchase of tickets expected to spur advance sales of Expo tickets among the public.
Special Concert Wishing for the Success of Yeosu Expo A special concert wishing for the successful hosting of Yeosu Expo was held in Busan and aired on February 2. Organized by MBC, one of the three major networks in Korea, the concert left unforgettable memories for Busan citizens with performances by many K-pop stars.
