Wolter Wierbos, pianist Kris Defoort seemed to catch his breath at Jazz Middelheim after the struggle the five-year journey writing this opera was, including heart attacks, coma, pandemics and, if necessary, postponement. TURF. The novel The Time of Our Singing by the American author Richard Powers is extremely topical. Defoort, together with librettist Peter van Kraaij, cast, chamber orchestra, jazz ensemble, children’s and youth choirs, illustrates how a racially mixed family moves forward, but is ultimately driven apart. ‘Je refuse d’entrer dans les cases’

FR/ Début septembre, Eddy Ape débarque au Botanique avec un double statut : révélation hip-hop et tête d’affiche de la soirée. Une belle progression pour le rappeur bruxellois qui, deux ans plus tôt, jouait son premier concert au même endroit, en première partie d’Isha. « C’est lui qui m’a offert la possibilité d’exister sur scène », confie Eddy Ape. « ll m’a poussé dans le dos au début de ma carrière. Il m’a donné de la force et l’envie de persévérer. Je lui en suis infiniment reconnaissant. » En 2021, l’artiste a peaufiné son style décontracté et gagné quelques places au classement du mec le plus cool de l’année. Quelque part entre la France de Doc Gynéco et l’Amérique de Masego, le rap prôné par Eddy Ape s’appuie sur les productions de l’ami Ekany (Krisy, YG Pablo) pour servir un doux mélange d’efficacité et de je-m’en-foutisme : une formule aussi accrocheuse que nébuleuse. « Dans l’industrie musicale, les gens veulent absolument te coller une étiquette sur le dos. Alors que moi, je refuse d’entrer dans les cases. Pour éviter d’être catalogué, j’ai d’ailleurs imaginé mon propre style. Je suis l’ambassadeur du “smooth banger”. Même si je chante en français, ce terme anglophone me semble parfaitement en phase avec les saccades de mon flow et la douceur qui découle des morceaux. » Quelques mois seulement après avoir publié l’inaugural Apeworld, le rappeur de la station Yser déballe aujourd’hui un essai intitulé Supernova. « Il y a un monde de différence entre ce disque et mon premier projet », insiste-t-il. « En astrologie, le concept de supernova est utilisé pour évoquer l’extinction d’une étoile au profit d’une autre, beaucoup plus lumineuse. Ce phénomène résume plutôt bien ce que je suis en train de vivre avec ma musique. » Un titre métaphorique, donc, pour briller et étendre sa constellation. Tout ça en gardant les pieds sur terre. In het jaar waarin hij dertig werd en met MiXMONK een puntgaaf concert gaf op Jazz Middelheim, lanceert de eeuwig jong uitziende Brusselse pianist Invisible Silence, een trio met de ervaren New Yorkse drummer Eric McPherson en de beloftevolle Berlijnse bassist Felix Henkelhausen. NIEUW REPERTOIRE. Een gestreamde set na een residentie in De Bijloke was hun eerste publieke teken van leven. Met publiek in de zaal kunnen deze originele composities die de grenzen verkennen tussen eigentijdse en traditionele jazz alleen maar aan dynamiek winnen. INFO. 17/10, 19.00, Bozar

Tijd voor stikstofverbinding NL

Wie Zwangere Guy deze zomer aan het werk zag, kon het lezen op zijn buik: “Familie boven alles.” Het gelijknamige nieuwe album met zijn makkers van Stikstof wordt ideaal voer om stoom af te blazen in zijn favoriete concertzaal. — TOM PEETERS Hoelang het er al getatoeëerd staat, weten we eigenlijk niet, en misschien verwijst de betekenis erachter naar zijn drukke agenda, en de tijd die Gorik van Oudheusden niet altijd had voor zijn naasten? Misschien verwijst het naar het hobbelige parcours dat hij aflegde met zijn eigen familie? Of misschien behoren we allemaal wel tot één grote familie, samen met collega-mc’s Jazz en Astrofisiks en deejay Vega, met entourage, fans én de bredere hiphopgemeenschap? “Anderhalf jaar corona heeft alles veranderd,” zei ZG ons onlangs stellig. “Mijn manier van kijken is nu anders. Ik kijk niet meer vooruit, maar sta stil bij wat ik doe en ben aan het genieten van de route.” Dat hij intussen een levend reclamebord is voor het nieuwe Stikstof-album is meegenomen voor de Brusselse hiphopentrepreneur. Via hun socials heeft de band alvast laten weten dat de eerste 2.000 exemplaren in een vette optical illusion-versie komen, die daarna niet meer verkrijgbaar zal zijn. De hoes, met een opvallende hoofdrol voor het scheikundige element met symbool N, oogt opvallend strak, net zoals de singles ‘Ambras’, ‘Driedubbeldik’ en ‘Grondleggers’ dat waren. Die laatste blies eind mei nog

vanaf het balkon van hun opnamestudio in de Anspachlaan de straat op. Familie boven alles zelf wordt op 1 oktober in de winkelrekken en op alle andere platformen verwacht. Het is intussen de vierde plaat van de crew die sinds 2010 mee de aanzet gaf voor de bloeiende Brusselse hiphopscene van vandaag. Check de lyrics van ‘Grondleggers’ voor toelichting over waar de wiet paffende plantrekkers annex goudzoekers vandaan komen. Nu wordt ook duidelijk hoe goed de bandnaam destijds gekozen is. De leden lijken inderdaad losse atomen van een scheikundig element die de neiging hebben zich te verbinden met andere stikstofatomen. Ook daarom is de nood om te spelen na de lockdown zo hoog. Voeg daarbij dat de officiële rentree van Stikstof plaatsvindt in Guy’s favoriete concertzaal, en vuurwerk is gegarandeerd. Zijn eerdere Di-GUY-taal-concert noemde hij niet voor niets “slechts een afleidingsmanoeuvre om zo snel mogelijk terug op een fokking echt podium alles kapot te spelen.” STIKSTOF 20 & 21/10, Ancienne Belgique

‘We zijn altijd in Float Fall blijven geloven’

NL/ In 2012 stonden de sterren gunstig voor Float Fall. Het Brusselse droompopduo rond Rozanne Descheemaeker en Ruben Lefever haalde de finale van Humo’s Rock Rally en zijn eerste single ‘Someday’ werd een radiohit, tot op Amerikaanse radio’s toe. Er volgden showcases voor platenbonzen in New York, een deal met (een sublabel van) Sony, lovende woorden van de populaire blogger Perez Hilton en sessies met producer Joey Waronker, rechterhand van Beck. “Maar plots begonnen de gesprekken stroef te verlopen,” vertelt Ruben Lefever. “Eerst dachten we dat het aan ons lag, maar andere bands op het roster van de platenfirma ervoeren hetzelfde. Uiteindelijk hield het label ermee op. Het heeft ons een paar advocaten en heel veel tijd gekost om ons los te wrikken uit de contracten die we hadden getekend.” De Amerikaanse droom spatte pardoes uiteen. “Toen hebben we even diep gezeten,” zegt Rozanne Descheemaeker. “Er volgden een paar onzekere jaren, maar we zijn altijd blijven geloven in de groep.” Lefever werkte zijn studie muziekproductie aan het KASK af, Descheemaeker musiceerde in andere projecten. Maar het tweetal sleutelde al die tijd ook verder aan het debuut van Float Fall. In 2018 kwam het tweespan weer boven water met de single ‘Hard time loving you’, een jaar later was het album na veel schaven en schuren ingeblikt. “We waren er helemaal klaar mee, en toen kwam corona,” lacht Lefever. “We hebben de release dan nog maar eens uitgesteld, ook al voelde dat als verlengingen op de bank,” zegt Descheemaeker. “De weg naar onze plaat was een calvarietocht, dan wilden we ze ook met de nodige aandacht kunnen uitbrengen, met liveshows.” Die plaat ligt er eind september, kort erna kan je live horen dat Float Fall zijn aan The xx verwante, twinkelende popsound niet overboord heeft gegooid. Descheemaeker, die in november ook aan de slag kan als hoornist bij het Symfonieorkest van De Munt, ziet de puzzelstukken alsnog in elkaar vallen. “Ik heb weleens gedacht dat dat debuutalbum er nooit zou komen, maar nu is het er. We will be able to see choreographer, dancer and teacher Alesandra Seutin more and more in Brussels, where she grew up. In between travelling to the UK, Africa, Asia and the US, she will present the group choreography Boy Breaking Glass in KVS. — MICHAËL BELLON Born in Harare, Zimbabwe to a South African- Belgian couple, Seutin grew up in Brussels before starting dance training at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London, followed by a course in choreography and performance at Middlesex University. A defining episode in her formation as an artist was her time at the École des Sables in Senegal, where she learned to combine traditional West African and contemporary influences. That experience made her dare to do her own thing rather than trying to respond to a purely white aesthetic. Her work focuses explicitly on the black body in a predominantly white society, and on traditional or contemporary urban forms of dance. Due to the underexposure of black artists, these are rarely considered higher art forms and thus do not yet sufficiently penetrate the theatres. Meanwhile, she has become co-director of the École des Sables herself, and guest artistic director of the National Youth Dance Company (Sadler’s Wells).

Since 2007, Seutin has her own company Vocab Dance. It is named after the Fugees’ song “Vocab”, which happened to be the first thing she came across when she was in London trying to come up with a name for the company. But Vocab Dance also fits with her vision of dance as a vocabulary, of which voice, song and visual art have also become an inseparable part since her experiences in Africa. We have already seen this in Brussels. In 2019, Seutin came to KVS with the performance Giant, and at the end of 2019 she was part of the cast and choreographer for Dear Winnie,. At the festival Congolisation 2021, she was given carte blanche for a whole evening. Now she is at KVS with the group performance Boy Breaking Glass, which unites dance and theatre and is inspired by the poem of the same name by Gwendolyn Brooks – the first black female poet in the US to receive a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Dans son nouveau spectacle, l’autrice et metteuse en scène nous plonge dans un futur où le soin de l’autre fait battre le cœur de la communauté. — GILLES BECHET En à peine quelques spectacles, Caroline Guiela Nguyen s’est imposée dans le théâtre français. Un regard tourné vers ceux que l’on pourrait oublier, vers des corps et des voix absentes des scènes théâtrales. Autrice, metteuse en scène et réalisatrice, elle a étudié la sociologie, avant d’intégrer l’école du Théâtre National de Strasbourg. En 2009, elle fonde la compagnie les Hommes Approximatifs. Dans leur travail, ils aiment faire côtoyer acteurs professionnels et non professionnels pour inventer des récits polyphoniques. Révélée par Saigon, un spectacle où elle s’interrogeait sur les blessures de la colonisation au Vietnam, elle revient avec un projet en quatre volets autour de la fraternité. Une fraternité qu’elle voit comme une reconnaissance inconditionnelle de l’autre, un frère pour qui et avec qui, on est prêt à agir dans un sentiment d’appartenance. Le premier volet de ce cycle a pris la forme du film Les Engloutis tourné à la maison centrale d’Arles avec des gens qui y purgent de longues peines.

La suite a pris la forme d’un conte dystopique FRATERNITÉ, Conte fantastique, présenté cet été à Avignon. Ce texte est né d’un travail d’enquête auprès d’institutions en charge d’absorber ou de remédier à l’exil et la séparation comme le Bureau du Rétablissement des Liens Familiaux (BRLF) de la Croix-Rouge française, ou de la rencontre avec une médecin légiste italienne qui cherche à retrouver l’identité des migrants morts en mer comme celle d’hommes décédés au XVIIIe siècle. La pièce imagine la disparition soudaine de la moitié de l’humanité où des centres de soin et de consolation ont été mis à la disposition des survivant.e.s. Dans ces lieux dédiés à combler l’attente et l’effacement des souvenirs, une galerie de personnages d’âge, de langues et de cultures diverses cherchent à construire un avenir commun avec leurs « Invisibles ». Het Nederlandstalige Bronks en het Franstalige La Montagne Magique trakteren zes dagen lang op een hoop ontroerende, grappige en scherpzinnige voorstellingen. KEUZE GENOEG. Het festival strijkt neer op verschillende plekken in Brussel, en presenteert zowel Bronks-producties (The happy few, Tribunal) als jonge artiesten en kleine gezelschappen en gevestigde waarden uit binnen- en buitenland zoals Theater Artemis, kabinet k, Miet Warlop, La Station en Reckless Sleepers.

NL/ Een concertthriller over een coverband die de hits van eightiesfenomeen Kate Bush speelt? Babooshka nog aan toe! Cover up is de nieuwe productie waarmee Bronks eindelijk weer alle remmen los wil gooien. De jeugdvoorstelling is het werk van een prettig gestoord viertal, dat ook op de scène staat: Lotte Diependaele, Femke Stallaert, Ciska Thomas en Tomas Pevenage. Iedereen is blij dat ze weer aan de slag kunnen. “Fantastisch, of wat denk je zelf?” zegt Brusselaar Tomas Pevenage. “Het is tweeënhalf jaar geleden dat we het idee voor deze voorstelling hadden, en nu kunnen we er echt aan beginnen. De sfeer bij Bronks zit goed. We zijn één grote familie.” Voor de repetitie in Bronks begon, repeteerde de ploeg al twee weken in De Grote Post in Oostende, waar ze samen met een producer acht covers maakten van Kate Bush-nummers. “Wij hebben die herwerkt naar genres van onze goesting: van elektropop over new wave tot punk. Die nummers dienen als kapstok voor het stuk, dat zich afspeelt tijdens de generale repetitie voor de show van een Kate Bush-coverband. Je leert de mensen van de groep kennen: hun verleden, hun relaties, wat ze met Kate Bush hebben, maar ook hun identiteitscrisissen, intriges, ruzies, de opofferingen om de ambitieuze stap van amateurisme naar professionaliteit te zetten… Alles, maar dan ook alles, komt aan de oppervlakte. En op een gegeven moment gebeurt er iets wat onontkoombaar is en sluipt er wat surrealisme de werkelijkheid binnen.” De makers van Cover up hebben ook gepraat met fans van Kate Bush, maar het stuk draait niet zozeer om haar biografie. De provocateur van Basic instinct en Showgirls huldigt gewoonlijk het motto ‘nooit voor het zingen de kerk uit’, maar benadert hier de overmatige naaktloperij en royale douche- en vrijscènes afwisselend speels en respectvol. Le réalisateur Arnaud Desplechin compare Léa Seydoux à Catherine Deneuve. C’est que la star française a enchaîné cinq films en six mois dont quatre repris dans la sélection cannoise, un James Bond et un film de Wes Anderson. — NIELS RUËLL « Léa, c’est Bardot, plus Binoche, plus Kate Moss, et parfois les trois à la fois, » voilà comment Thierry Frémaux, délégué général du Festival de Cannes, décrivait Léa Seydoux il y a quelques années. Cet été, l’actrice, qui a remporté une Palme d’Or pour sa contribution à La vie d’Adèle d’Abdellatif Kechiche, était la reine du Festival de Cannes. La Hongroise Ildikó Enyedi lui a demandé de jouer dans L’Histoire de ma femme, un drame romantique tout en longueur sur un capitaine macho qui se marie aveuglément à une Française. Dans The French Dispatch de Wes Anderson, elle tient le rôle d’un maton qui, sans aucun scrupule, pose nue pour un peintre-psychopathe au look de Benicio del Toro. Et les blockbusters qui ne passent pas par Cannes n’ont pas de secrets pour Léa Seydoux non plus. Dans No Time To Die, elle prête main forte à James Bond dans le rôle de Dr Madeleine Swann. Het was in de 21e eeuw nog niet voorgekomen, tot Joachim Lafosse deze zomer met zijn negende film werd geselecteerd voor de competitie van het festival van Cannes. Eindelijk, want de 46-jarige Brusselaar was er al verschillende keren dichtbij. Élève libre en L’économie du couple kregen een plekje in de Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, À perdre la raison in de nevensectie Un Certain Regard. Lafosse: “Natuurlijk was ik dolblij. Het is geen geheim dat ik al jaren droom van een plek in de competitie. Maar, vraag het gerust na, al maanden voor Cannes de selectie bekendmaakte, bazuinde ik rond dat Les intranquilles mijn beste film ooit is. Ik ben er heel gelukkig mee. Chloé Zhao’s year of magic is only half over. In April, she won the Oscars for Best Film and Best Director with Nomadland. In early November, we will know whether the Chinese-American director can also excel in the universe of superhero company Marvel. — NIELS RUËLL As of 25 April, Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) is finally no longer the only woman with an Oscar for Best Director on her mantelpiece. Chloé Zhao, who was born in Beijing but moved to America, can now also boast an Academy Award. The 39-year-old received the award for directing Nomadland, a road movie that earlier won the Golden Lion at the Venice Festival. The movie depicts the life of modern nomads: people who no longer have a home and travel across the United States in all kinds of trailers. They enjoy their freedom but are also dependent on solidarity and numerous underpaid jobs, for example in the warehouses of Amazon. The idea for a film adaptation of the book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder came from lead actress Frances McDormand. The actress who earned Oscars for her leading roles in Fargo and Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri begged Zhao to direct because, like many film fans, she was impressed with The Rider. In this impressionistic indie gem, Zhao films a

young Lakota cowboy who wants to live among the horses after a bad rodeo accident. Like his ancestors. Zhao and her life partner and camera-operator Joshua James Richards combine pure film poetry with great authenticity and work wonderfully well with non-professional actors. Like their intimate debut film Songs My Brothers Taught Me, which was compared to Terrence Malick’s Badlands, they shot The Rider on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. With this profile, Zhao seems to be miles away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But she still accepted the superhero company’s proposal to direct Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan and Richard Madden in Eternals. Eternals are an immortal alien race who have lived here in secret for thousands of years to protect the Earth from Deviants. Does Zhao control Marvel or does Marvel control Zhao? ‘Il faut absolument voir le film sur grand écran’

FR/ Trois ans après Girl de Lukas Dhont, la section Un Certain Regard du Festival de Cannes révèle à nouveau le grand talent d’une débutante belge. Dans Un Monde, la Bruxelloise Laura Wandel rassemble jeunes, vieux, hommes, femmes, gros et minces autour d’une fillette de six ans qui doit aller à ‘la grande école’. L’émancipation de Nora et sa confrontation à la dure réalité de la cour de récré sont rendues encore plus difficiles quand elle devient spectatrice de son grand frère qui se fait enquiquiner sans pitié. La presse internationale n’a eu que des louanges pour le génialissime début de Wandel, tant au niveau cinématographique que du contenu. Même si la pandémie a failli lui mettre des bâtons dans les roues. « On a tourné il y a deux étés. On est obligés de travailler l’été quand on travaille avec des enfants. Le 1er septembre 2019, nous avons commencé le montage. Le jour où nous avons tout à fait finalisé Un Monde, la Belgique a été confinée. Je ne l’oublierai jamais », nous explique Wandel. Du coup, la réalisatrice a fait face à un dilemme inattendu. « On avait déjà envoyé une version non achevée au Festival de Cannes et ils nous ont fait savoir qu’Un Monde avait été repris dans leur sélection. C’était un rêve qui se réalisait. Mais il n’était pas vraiment clair si le Festival allait avoir lieu. Quand le festival est tombé à l’eau, on a dû faire un choix difficile : sortir le film avec un label du Festival de Cannes ou attendre une année de plus, et courir le risque de ne pas être sélectionné en 2021. On a choisi d’attendre, et tout est bien qui finit bien. Le soulagement était énorme. Cela peut sembler prétentieux mais il faut absolument voir Un Monde sur grand écran. Un Monde, c’est du cinéma immersif. Sur un petit écran avec un son moyen, il est difficile de vraiment vivre le film. » NIELS RUËLL

‘I find it hard to deal with things head on’

EN/ Between 2017 and 2020, photographer Massao Mascaro wandered the Mediterranean coasts, an initiatory journey in seven stages in the footsteps of Ulysses. Ceuta, Naples, Athens, Palermo, Istanbul, Tunis and Lampedusa, places crushed by the sun where he took the time to immerse himself to meet people, young people sometimes also wandering. He has taken thousands of analogue pictures there. “These are images that remain ghosts in my head. When I develop my negatives, I discover images that often do not correspond to what I had retained.” He photographs faces, bodies and places that he rubs together in a montage. An octopus spread on the ground in Naples responding to young Tunisians embracing. A solar frame without needles is next to a charging smartphone whose wire draws the infinity symbol. “I find it hard to deal with things head on. And there is beauty when I am moved, no matter what I am looking at.” Sub Sole is the third series of this young Frenchman based in Brussels and trained at Le 75. For him, a good photo is one that he looks at again and that he does not get right away. “As we consume a lot of images, having photos that are difficult to decipher at first glance and that we discover like an onion that is peeled layer after layer is a good thing.” He has yet to complete a project in Brussels, a city he appreciates for its chaos and hospitality. “Even if the sun isn’t shining, it’s a city that has a lot in common with Marseille, which some people call the Brussels of the Mediterranean.” In the course of his walks, the unknown emerges where it is not expected, such as the Ecuadorian communities that gather in Duden Park to practice a very special kind of volleyball. A year after Keith Haring left the building, Bozar welcomes another pop art star into its fold. Put on your rose-tinted glasses for a glimpse into the wonderful universe of David Hockney. — MICHAËL BELLON Let’s start with auction prices. At 90.3 million euros, Portrait of an Artist by David Hockney is still the most expensive painting by a living artist ever sold at auction. The canvas shows one of the many colourful swimming pool scenes that the painter from Bradford, England made in the 1960s and 1970s after he moved to California. With this, Hockney was certainly more successful in life than that other holder of an expensive paintbrush Vincent van Gogh, with whom he is sometimes compared because of his shimmering use of colour and sustained preference for landscapes and still lifes. The 84-year-old pop artist who likes to paint reality in acrylic paint has been painting for more than 60 years, so after 30 years Bozar is bringing him back to Brussels for a large double exhibition that you can visit with just one ticket. The main event is “Works from the Tate Collection, 1954-2017”, a retrospective of more than 80 paintings, drawings and prints reflecting Hockney’s entire career. With iconic images from both London’s Swinging Sixties and Southern California. With both his famous

monumental double portraits My Parents and Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy and his monumental landscapes, and they are not all of them sunny by the way. For example, Bigger Trees Near Warter from 2007 – Hockney’s largest work measuring over twelve metres in length – is an impression of a gloomy day in Yorkshire. More than an encore to this retrospective is “The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020”, presented in collaboration with London’s Royal Academy of Arts. It is an experimental series of no less than 116 works that Hockney “painted” on his iPad in Normandy while in lockdown there. They are a witness to Hockney’s still undiminished passion for experimentation, but also to the optimism that his work conveys: “Do remember they can’t cancel the spring.” These 116 digital works will be printed on high quality paper and exhibited in their entirety at Bozar. ‘Les réparations s’accompagnent souvent de destruction’

FR/ Aimé Mpane sera le premier artiste congolais à exposer aux Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts, une reconnaissance à laquelle il prête peu d’importance, avec son art sans frontières. L’artiste multidisciplinaire, l’un des artistes africains les plus importants de sa génération, y présentera des oeuvres articulées autour de la thématique Remedies, qu’il interprète comme un rééquilibrage plutôt que comme une réparation. « Les réparations s’accompagnent souvent de destruction et de violence, je préfère aspirer à un état d’égalité et de réconciliation de l’humain avec l’humain. » Dans son travail, il multiplie les techniques, installations de peinture, sculpture, mais ce qui réunit toutes ses oeuvres, c’est sans doute le travail du bois. « Le bois c’est une histoire familiale. Mon père était artiste et depuis tout petit, je travaille le bois. Ça a été mon premier matériau, ma porte d’entrée dans l’art. » Mais derrière le matériau dans tous ses états, il y a aussi la symbolique comme celle des allumettes. « J’aime travailler sur les correspondances, (matches en anglais). Je voulais parler de l’esclavage, mais si d’un côté de l’Atlantique on avait des esclaves africains dans les plantations de tabac, de l’autre, il y avait les femmes et les enfants exploités dans les fabriques d’allumettes en Angleterre. » Quand on lui a proposé de choisir une oeuvre à revisiter parmi les collections du musée, il a opté sans hésitation pour les Quatre études de la tête d’un Maure de Peter Paul Rubens. « On avait des livres d’art à la maison et j’ai toujours été fasciné par cette peinture. Le fait qu’elle se trouvait au dos du buste de Léopold II sur les billets de 500 francs rendait la symbolique encore plus intéressante. » La période de pandémie, qu’il a vécue à Bruxelles, a été féconde créativement même si du côté matériel, la situation n’était pas idéale. Europalia stond sinds jaar en dag in het teken van een gastland of een regio, maar nu heeft het prestigieuze multidisciplinaire cultuurfestival zin in een doorreis. Aanleiding is de reeks verjaardagen die de Europese spoorwegen dit jaar vieren. — MICHAËL BELLON Precies 175 jaar geleden werden Brussel en Parijs als eerste Europese hoofdsteden met elkaar verbonden. Daarnaast vieren we dit jaar ook 40 jaar tgv en 25 jaar Thalys. Europalia spoort en dus focust het deze editie op de culturele betekenis van de spoorwegen vroeger en nu. Op heel uiteenlopende manieren belicht Europalia Trains & Tracks het vervoersmiddel dat ons de moderniteit in katapulteerde, landen en culturen met elkaar verbond, economische voorspoed bracht, kolonisatie en oorlogsvoering diende en de wereld danig versnelde en vervuilde, maar nu meer en meer symbool staat voor vertraging en duurzaamheid. De openingstentoonstelling Tracks to modernity in de KMSKB is meteen een van de blikvangers, en kijkt naar de weerslag die de revolutie op het spoor had in de kunsten. Met werk van Monet, Spilliaert en Boccioni, maar ook hedendaagse creaties van onder meer de Nederlandse Fiona Tan en Eric Joris’ CREW. Train World kan natuurlijk niet ontbreken en gaat de nostalgietoer op met een opstelling over de Oriënt- Express. En langs de langste treinroute van ons land − Oostende-Eupen − komen kunstwerken van onder anderen Che Go Eun, Inas Halabi, Marina Pinsky en Laure Prouvost.

Performances zijn er ook. Zo werkt kunstenaar Rita Hoofwijk met Jean een project rond tijdsbeleving uit op de trein tussen Brussel en Amsterdam, en een ander rond beweging in het kader van de expo Rinus Van de Velde: inner travels in Bozar in 2022. Choreograaf Boris Charmatz laat in La ronde zes uur lang dansers, muzikanten, acteurs en zangers bewegingen, dialogen en muziek brengen in onder meer het Noordstation. Het Ictus Ensemble herdenkt de allereerste treinrit op het Europese vasteland van 1835 tussen Brussel en Mechelen, met muzikale interventies op de trein. En voor Lost & found (van Casco Phil en Muziektheater Transparant) verblijven een componist en een librettist telkens een week in een glazen box in de stations van Antwerpen, Brussel-Centraal en London St Pancras om dagelijks een opera te componeren rond de actualiteit. Passa Porta organiseert dan weer een schrijf residentie op de trein door Europa, met een publieksavond in de lente. ‘Literatuur houdt het verlangen brandend naar verandering, naar verbinding’ NL/ “Wij zijn de menigte, en wij produceren niets. Wij loungen. Wij komen bij elkaar. Wij praten. Wij dansen. We hebben geen agenda, geen actiepunten. En we hebben geen geld. Juist dat is gevaarlijk. Het gevaarlijke is dat we een wij zijn.” Op het moment dat de wereld stilaan uit de stilstand kruipt, dringt vanuit Exces, Persis Bekkerings tweede roman, een breekbaar, opruiend visioen binnen. Een visioen dat zich zweterig en pompend, extatisch en gevaarlijk een weg kronkelt van Amsterdam in 1988, over dansvloeren in Berlijn, New York en Londen naar een in 2020 in lockdown verkerende cyberspace. Exces toont zich, net als hoofdpersonage Nim, als een lichaam, van verlangen, verlies en vloeibare paradoxen. Een lichaam dat opgaat in een nu, in een wij, op het repetitieve ritme van techno. “Vandaag ben ik een nostalgische raver,” vertelt de Nederlands-Brusselse schrijfster. “Het mag ook al zo lang niet meer. Deze crisis is de zoveelste. Ik ervaar een soort impasse, van een heden dat permanent in crisis is. Zonder utopieën lopen we vast. We kunnen wel actievoeren, we kunnen op Facebook Marx citeren, dat wordt vervolgens alleen maar een nieuw consumptieartikel. Wat kan je daar dan nog tegenover stellen? Voor mij is dat het exces, de daad waarin geen overwaarde hoeft te zitten aan noodzaak of uitkomst. De ultieme zinloosheid.” Enter de ravescene, die in Exces opbolt tot een broeierige sfeer, een politiek domein, een beeldschone paradox. “Een rave blijft een heel ambivalent iets, omdat het zo tijdelijk en efemeer is. Op het hoogtepunt verdwijn je als het ware in een groter geheel, maar achteraf ga je gewoon naar huis en is er niemand die je mist. De rave is voor mij een uiting van een verlangen naar een gemeenschap, een moment waar heel even een andere wereld mogelijk is. Zo heb ik het toch altijd ervaren, en dat is wat ik nu al zo lang mis.” Op het moment dat de raver alleen nostalgisch kan bestaan, roert de schrijver zich. “Literatuur is net zo’n uitdrukking van gemeenschap, ja.
