Bruxelles, je me suis lancé dans des excursions minimales autour de mon studio. Les images de cette série ont servi d’excuse pour découvrir un coin de la ville que je connais peu, une zone de cinq kilomètres carrés. C’était aussi l’occasion de m’essayer à la photographie couleur ».

Le travail de Massao Mascaro (Lille, 1990) offre un équilibre délicat entre autobiographie, topographie et politique. Sa série Jardin (Bozar Monography Award 2016) fera l’objet d’un ouvrage cette année. Son nouveau travail, What a Big River, sera exposé à la Fondation A en 2020. Far out! 2018 – exactly 50 years after May 1968 – was the year of civil disobedience. Is that why the political system was so upset when 2019 started with tens of thousands of Belgian school children loudly protesting against climate inaction? You could hear them think: “Sure, it’s all very sympathetic and all, but it is so naughty of them to start a year late. And what pessimism, what distrust in our world-saving ingenuity!” Why this faith in progress could not have yielded political fruit a few decades earlier, is a question that still needs to be answered. Take, for example, the kindred spirit that lived in Ireland until recently. A man whose work – over 140 books (including The Three Robbers and Moon Man), erotic drawings, satirical paintings, and political posters – was driven by good causes that need to be fought for, ranging from equality to ecology. Unfortunately, it is too late for him. On 9 February, the ingenious author and illustrator Tomi Ungerer breathed his last breath into the polluted air. “Far out is not far enough,” was the motto of the

Strasbourg-born artist who lived until the age of 87 and ultimately never went far enough. In his own opinion, that is. According to the critics, he went too far, he was a provocateur, a man who broke the boundaries of decency. Tomi Ungerer’s headmaster once described him as a “wilfully perverse and subversive individualist.” Bear these words as a honorary soubriquet, boys and girls! Continue to be razor-sharp and unafraid. Like Tomi Ungerer: “When I die I’ll find out what’s behind the far out. Maybe there’s nothing. But nothing is fantastic too. Because if you’re faced with nothing, you can fill it up. With your mind.”

WOMAN VERSUS COMPUTER

Self-confidently feminine. Powerful, but also melancholic. Adventurous and open. Aggressive but oh so playful. These are only a few of the adjectives that are used to describe Ouri’s compelling electro. With roots in South America and native soil in Paris that she left long ago, she grew up in Montreal, which was the ideal breeding ground for her eclectic, cosmopolitan sound. “The Canadian city is a special place for artists,” she told the blog of the music technology developer Native Instruments two years ago, after her debut album Superficial was released. “It is very diverse and open, with lots of space for experimentation. Interest in electronic music is growing rapidly.” The fact that her classical background as pianist, harpist, and cellist has a soothing effect on the melodies that she creates on her computer was already clear on the 2015 EP Maze, which sounded both fierce and playful. On Superficial, she continued to put melancholy to beats with a tender touch, and her cooperation with singer-songwriter Mind Bath, which resulted in an EP release in late 2017, vacillated between mild and muscled, between female and male energy. Ouri seeks to retain the laboratory vibe of the studio in her live shows. “Even if the computer is still the crossroads live, I try to look at it as little as possible. There always has to be the freedom to improvise because I want to be able to adapt the rhythm to my audience.” To her, the hybrid sound, which is created layer by layer, is a kind of augmented reality and she enjoys “THERE ALWAYS HAS “not only creating TO BE THE FREEDOM abstract sounds, but TO IMPROVISE” something with which people can identify.” On We Share Our Blood, the EP that was released last year, she used her own voice for the first time. “Despite crusades or potential AI domination, we keep sharing our blood: for creation or destruction. Either motivated by rivalry, fusion or strangeness, we blend,” she says on her Bandcamp page. For the electronica artist, this is yet another reason to provide a vocal counterbalance to the raw drum breaks and imposing basses that she conjures out of her computer. In een Bulgaars gehucht gedragen de Duitse bouwers van een waterkrachtcentrale zich als cowboys. Alleen de eigengereide Meinhard zoekt toenadering tot de dorpsbewoners. Maar wat moeten die met een passant? Western – Stagecoach gekruist met Toni Erdmann – was een van de twintig beste films van 2017, maar dat kan u niet weten want de film kreeg hier geen release. Cinematek zet dat nu recht en nodigt de Duitse regisseuse Valeska Grisebach uit om Western voor te stellen en vertoont ook haar twee vorige films: Mein Stern en het uitstekende relatiedrama Sehnsucht. Un bon parti car...

Avant d’avoir enflammé la critique en janvier 2016 avec son premier roman très bien écrit et percutant de presque cinq cents pages Het Smelt (Débâcle), il y avait déjà six éditeurs qui se battaient pour la publier sur base de plusieurs de ses nouvelles. Le livre a figuré sur la liste des meilleures ventes en librairie pendant des mois. De nombreuses traductions ont suivi, et une adaptation au cinéma par Veerle Baetens est prévue. Le courant passe-t-il avec un francophone ?

Spit est originaire d’un petit village en Campine, mais son roman montre clairement que ce ne doit pas être une partie de plaisir de grandir là-bas. En 2005, l’écrivaine déménage à Bruxelles pour étudier au RITCS (elle écrit également des scénarios de film). Méfiez-vous des apparences.

Grain de beauté, fossette au menton, cils qui créent un léger déplacement d’air à chaque battement: Spit est aussi charmante que talentueuse et modeste. Comment elle arrive à faire tenir droit sur sa tête cette quantité de cheveux en chignon négligé n’est qu’une des nombreuses énigmes entourant l’écrivaine. Petit défaut

Spit doit encore finir d’écrire la suite de ce premier roman à succès. Vu le sérieux avec lequel elle conçoit la littérature et le désir maniaque de travailler qui est le sien, tout le reste ne passe qu’en second. Quand pouvez-vous la rencontrer?

Le père spirituel de presque 60 ans du charmant personnage de bande dessinée Cowboy Henk, Peter van Heirseele pour les intimes, associe l’humour, la rapidité d’esprit, l’émerveillement et l’enthousiasme d’un enfant hyperkinétique bavard à l’érudition réfléchie et au savoir-faire discret du peintre, accordeur de piano et macrobiote qu’il est aussi. Le courant passe-t-il avec un francophone ?

Absolument, car cet absurdiste d’Ostende est un descendant direct de Magritte et de nombreux autres surréalistes belges. Avec Histoire de la Belgique pour tous: racontée par Cowboy Henk, la déclaration d’amour de Herr Seele à notre pays est également disponible en français. D’après les tabloïds, l’artiste a déjà eu une amante française, donc il maîtrise la langue. Méfiez-vous des apparences.

Quand on voit M. Seele, on se demande pourquoi les hommes grands, minces et chauves, en costumes rétro et colorés, ne sont pas la norme. Et même si ce Cowboy Henk à la gâchette facile n’était autobiographique qu’à 1%, cela ferait quand même de Herr Seele une bête au lit. Petit défaut...

Les nouveaux amis et petites amies devront partager Herr Seele avec Kamagurka, son autre moitié artistique avec lequel il entretient une relation tumultueuse depuis près de quarante ans. Quand pouvez-vous le rencontrer ?

Griet Op de Beeck est sans aucun doute l’auteur de fiction le plus vendu en Flandre et aux Pays-Bas ces dernières années. Après une carrière de journaliste et de chroniqueuse, ce talent de Turnhout a été révélé le 31 janvier 2013 avec Vele hemels boven de zevende (Bien des ciels au-dessus du septième). Trois autres romans à succès ont suivi avec des portraits de personnages qui tentent de concilier leur vulnérabilité et leurs traumatismes avec l’amour et la confiance. Le courant passe-t-il avec un francophone ?

À première vue, Op de Beeck écrit plutôt en flamand avec ses « ge » et « gij », mais ses livres ont depuis été traduits en anglais, en allemand, en arabe, en tchèque, en afrikaans, en japonais et même en français (Éditions Héloïse d'Ormesson à Paris). L’humanité de ses récits n’a, par ailleurs, pas besoin de traduction. Méfiez-vous des apparences.

Op de Beeck est une personne toujours fraîche, avec des yeux auxquels on ne peut rien cacher, un sourire que l’on prend comme un cadeau et une coiffure qui est devenue entretemps un best-seller en Flandre. Petit défaut...

Toute personne qui se méfie lorsqu’une femme enchaîne les best-sellers devrait s’abstenir de toute relation avec Griet. Lors d’un premier rendez-vous, mieux vaut éviter de revenir sur le débat linguistique provoqué dans les médias suite à la parution de ses livres sur la règle du participe passé en -d ou en -t en néerlandais. Quand pouvez-vous la rencontrer ?

La Traduction littéraire (NL-> FR): tour de force (Isabelle Rosselin, traductrice de Beecks, dialogue avec Philippe Noble, traducteur de David Van Reybrouck), le 15/2 à 20.00.

Cet Anversois pure souche a fait ses débuts en 1994, mais il est maintenant au top de sa forme. Son dernier roman, Wil (Trouble) - un récit emblématique sur la collaboration dans sa ville natale occupée – a été couvert de prix littéraires. Olyslaegers s’était également fait remarquer en tant que dramaturge. Il a ainsi démontré sa connaissance et son respect des Grecs anciens avec les textes monumentaux de Jan Fabre. En plus de cela, Olyslaegers est un activiste au grand cœur qui lutte en paroles et en actes contre les injustices et les inégalités dans notre société.

Le courant passe-t-il avec un francophone ?

En 1996, Olyslaegers a publié un recueil d’histoires intitulé Il faut manger : il connaît donc au moins ces trois mots de français. Le grand atout de ce narrateur enthousiaste est qu’il peut expliquer mieux que quiconque ce qui est vrai dans l’affirmation : « tous les Flamands sont des fascistes ». Méfiez-vous des apparences.

Tout ce qu’on dit à propos des hommes à la chevelure luxuriante semble se vérifier. Cette tête de lion aux pieds de bouc ne s’habille pas seulement comme un bohémien, le satyre autoproclamé de la littérature flamande adopte également un style de vie dionysiaque avec fêtes et rituels païens. Petit défaut...

Le roman d’Olyslaegers Wil est le dernier volet d’une trilogie composée des tomes Wij et Winst. Les mots qui commencent par un « W » sont peut-être un test d’éloquence pour Wallons et francophones en néerlandais. Quand pouvez-vous le rencontrer ?

The gardener of living things

Michel Blazy makes poetry from living things. In his exhibitions, he shows the results of his observations in the laboratory, his studio. The multiverse that he presents at La Loge is an unformatted world in which the material can freely overrun a domestic space we believed to be under control. — GILLES BECHET

or more than thirty years, Michel Blazy has been making various forms of life coexist. Like a gardener, he encourages them to develop, to cohabit with inert materials and with the detritus of our consumer society. He then lets time run its course so he can see his subjects, or his actors, grow, germinate, transform, and degrade. An exhibition becomes an experience in which different time scales come together, in which events take place in the same space at different speeds under the influence of light, humidity, and the presence of spectators.

How do you come up with an exhibition? Is the narrative specific to the space? MICHEL BLAZY: It often comes about through encounters with the space and through discussions with the curator. In my studio, I have every piece I have made for the past thirty years. Some are transportable, others are reproducible. And I can make them materialise very quickly, I just have to go to the local supermarket and buy lentils, cotton wool, plastic bags. An exhibition often involves dialogues between things that have existed for a long time but have never been shown together and other more recent things. All the things I have made over the last thirty years have been living things. They are like actors that I bring out again for pieces in which they can interact with others.

“Multiverse”, your exhibition at La Loge, has a unique background because it was meant to open last September but was postponed for environmental reasons. BLAZY: The original exhibition came about after an exhibition that was very memorable for me.

It was in Nantes, where I disrupted a public fountain. The fountain sprayed and overflowed in every direction. When Anne-Claire (Schmitz, La Loge’s director, gb) suggested the exhibition to me, I kept that theme of overflowing. And that lasted until the time of the opening, when water damage led to the exhibition being closed. Between the first time and the second time, I removed some pieces and added others. I also decided to make the central piece a kind of basin. It is quite deep and, in my mind, it reminded me of a swimming pool, a place where an element, water, is domesticated. The exhibition’s starting point is a kind of confrontation between something domestic and the phenomena that would overwhelm it. There are bunches of lentils which are bin bags full of cotton wool into which lentils have been thrown. The seeds will sprout and then, as the bag is watered, you can see a stain grow on the carpet and become darker day by day because the lentil juice changes colour as it becomes oxidised. Stains have always interested me, for just that reason, because they are out of our control. A stain is never made deliberately in a domestic space and its form cannot be controlled.

Does your work in the studio consist of provoking and understanding the interactions between living and inert materials and assessing what is visually interesting? BLAZY: My work is setting things in motion and then watching what happens, all the phenomena that result from the interaction with humidity, time, and different types of living beings. It can be strange because there are things that you only notice after a certain amount of time because they require certain processes to occur.

I set as many things as possible in motion and try to observe them for as long as possible. Some reactions are immediate, and others become visible after three or four years. At times, it can seem like nothing interesting is happening, but sometimes that’s just because you haven’t waited long enough.

Do your pieces involve a desire to cultivate a sense of wonder towards the mundane? BLAZY: They are not about the wonder in everyday things, because they can even be very unsettling, and can touch on environmental issues, when you suddenly find yourself overwhelmed by things which you put in place and which you believed to be extremely well controlled. At the same time, I see what you mean by wonder, because it’s not dramatic either.

You spoke about the stain on the carpet. Maybe after the exhibition some people will look at a stain on their carpet differently. BLAZY: Yes, I hope so. The power, the gentle strength, of art, is to speak to people in that

intimate way so that one small experience changes the way they look at things.

You mentioned environmental issues: is your work a vision of the world of today? You have also denied several times that it has a “message”. BLAZY: It’s not that I have anything against messages, it’s that I don’t believe at all in political messages. What I hope for from art is that intimate moment when a person comes into contact with my sculpture and it might make them change the way they see things; but it’s an intimate experience, an interaction that takes place in a single moment. My pieces don’t require an explanation, they tell their own story.

Could your work also be read as a statement about the evolution of the natural world that surrounds us? BLAZY: I have always had trouble talking about nature. I prefer to talk about living things. The separation of nature and culture is no longer a valid way of describing what’s going on. Not all

of today’s environmental problems are natural problems – they come from the interaction between nature and culture. And that’s what interests me. It’s that interaction which produces living things and turns against us. The abandoned computers that have been taken over by plants are a kind of vanitas. It’s about the disappearance of our way of life, our civilisation, and our relationship with the world.

Op basis van die levensverhalen monteerden ze vervolgens een groepsportret van ons land, waaruit blijkt dat die Belgen uiteindelijk meestal ook maar gewone mensen zijn. Jacobs en Delrue zijn beide ex-RITCS-studenten die samen Mieren slapen nooit maakten bij Villanella. Jacobs won voorts met Metamorphosen de Debuutprijs op het ITS-festival in Amsterdam, en stond ook in Bonte nacht van Tuning People & De Maan, en de monoloog Misschien Marieke van Lieve Blancquaert. Delrue kan u kennen van De man, de vrouw en de beer (Bronks) of Zoutloos en Chasse patate van Studio Orka. De twee initiators van dit project krijgen in dit interview het gezelschap van hun Luikse medeacteur Jean-Baptiste Szézot van het Raoul Collectif en het Ramdam Collectif. Op het podium wordt dat drietal nog

eens versterkt door de scenografen/performers Arber Aliaj (LUCA School of Arts en RITCS) en Rachid Laachir, die eerder werkte met Marijs Boulogne, Lotte van den Berg, Tuning People en fABULEUS. De hele onderneming wordt gecoacht door regisseur Peter Monsaert, die eerder de films Offline en Le ciel flamand maakte.

Jullie zijn al even met de voorbereiding van dit stuk bezig. Wat wilden jullie doen? JULIE DELRUE: We wilden iets maken over België. Een soort portret. Omdat we toch een liefde voelden voor het land, al is die dan moeilijk te omschrijven. Want wat is België, en wat vinden we er bijzonder aan? GREET JACOBS: Het idee zat al heel lang in mijn hoofd. Van toen ik vijf jaar geleden in het laatste jaar van het RITCS zat. Door ouder te worden en meer op reis te gaan naar het buitenland, begin je meer van op een afstand naar je land te kijken. Als kind of puber haal je je identiteit niet uit het vanzelfsprekende feit dat je Belg bent. Maar als je reist en weer terugkomt, voel je toch dat dit je thuisland is en vraag je je af waarom dat dan zo is. Met Brussel als ultieme voorbeeld van hoe alles op een rare

manier samenwerkt of juist niet samenwerkt. Waarom voel ik me hier thuis? Waarom ben ik hier graag en herken ik mezelf in andere mensen die hier wonen? Het gaat ons dus niet om een of andere gebeurtenis van korte duur zoals een WK. Ik vertrok meer vanuit de vaststelling dat ik hier echt graag woon, en me makkelijk vereenzelvig met de mensen en de dingen hier. Een beetje bescheiden, een beetje verscholen. Prachtige huizen naast lelijke… We wilden daar iets schoons over vertellen, omdat er ook heel vaak verteld wordt wat België allemaal niet is of wat er niet kan. DELRUE: België wordt vaak gedefinieerd vanuit het negatieve. Het is geen land waar mensen heel trots op zijn. JACOBS: Het is ook geen supermooi land. We hebben geen ongelofelijke natuur. Alles is maar zozo. Er zijn maar weinig landen die op die manier worden gedefinieerd.

Hoe begin je daar dan een voorstelling over te maken? DELRUE: We kwamen snel tot de conclusie dat het de inwoners zijn die een land maken. Dus wilden Greet en ik een jaar lang zoveel mogelijk

verschillende Belgen in België interviewen. Die gesprekken voerden we bij die mensen thuis. We hadden een paar vragen over België. Voel je je Belg? Wat betekent België voor u? Wat is er typisch Belgisch? Maar we stelden evengoed levensvragen. Heb je ergens spijt van? Wat betekent het leven voor u? Wat betekent de liefde voor u? Daardoor waren we soms tot twee uur lang bij iemand thuis aan het luisteren naar zijn verhaal. Dat was heel intens. Er kwam veel op ons af. De mensen kenden ons toch niet en hadden daardoor soms het gevoel dat ze ons alles konden vertellen.

JULIE DELRUE:

“België wordt vaak gedefinieerd vanuit het negatieve. Het is geen land waar mensen heel trots op zijn” Wat hadden ze allemaal over België te zeggen? DELRUE: Dat was heel gevarieerd. Sommige mensen waren overtuigd Belg. Anderen eerst Vlaming en dan Belg. Nog anderen voelden zich eerst mens, of Europeaan. JACOBS: Sommige mensen die hier nog maar pas zijn komen wonen, voelen zich vol overtuiging Belg. Anderen die hier al hun hele leven wonen, wisten het niet of dachten daar nooit over na. DELRUE: Er waren er ook die zich geen Belg voelden. Door het feit dat identiteit vaak ook iets is wat andere mensen op je plakken. En sommige mensen hebben het gevoel dat ze niet als Belg, maar als buitenstaander benaderd worden, en voor die mensen is het moeilijk om je te identificeren met dat land. Mensen die hier geboren zijn, maar telkens opnieuw de vraag krijgen waar ze oorspronkelijk vandaan komen… Dat heb we een paar keer gehoord: hoeveel keer nog? Hoe lang gaat het nog duren voor je mij als Belg ziet. Dat heeft ons wel gepakt. Je had zelfs mensen die zeiden: “Ik denk dat ik mij minder en minder Belg ga voelen.” JACOBS: Je leert ook kritisch naar de clichés te kijken. Een Palestijn die in Brussel samenwoont met een West-Vlaamse – waarvan de kinderen West-Vlaams en Arabisch spreken (lacht) – zei dat het hem opviel dat Belgen zo trots zijn. Je zou dat op het eerste gezicht misschien inderdaad niet zeggen, zei hij, maar je voelt onderhuids toch vaak hoe Belgen vinden dat de manier waarop zij de dingen aanpakken de beste is.

Jullie ambitieuze plan was om zo honderd mensen te interviewen. JACOBS: Maar na veertig zijn we gestopt omdat

we meer dan genoeg materiaal hadden. Alle Belgen interviewen kon toch niet en we hadden snel genoeg interessante stemmen. Een Ierse gitaarbouwer die al jaren als arbeider in de haven van Oostende werkte, de minister-president van de Duitstalige gemeenschap, een kind van acht dat in Genk woont en waarvan de vader drie kebabzaken heeft, een aantal Brusselse jongeren…

Hoe maken jullie daar een voorstelling van? JEAN-BAPTISTE SZÉZOT: We staan met vijf op het

toneel. Van sommige van die veertig getuigenissen hebben we maar een paar zinnetjes of woorden geselecteerd, maar van andere gebruiken we heel veel. Er zijn altijd personages waarvoor je meteen veel empathie hebt. In het begin wilden we de mensen bijna exact nabootsen. Uiteindelijk zijn we daar iets losser in geworden en gaan we een beetje aan de haal met tics en de manier van praten van die mensen.

DELRUE: We hebben zelf ook wat scènes geschreven en beelden gemaakt, en we gebruiken waarschijnlijk ook de beelden van de interieurs van de mensen die we hebben gefilmd. Zo krijg je de plekken te zien waar we zijn geweest. De mensen zelf zie je alleen in de persoon van de acteurs die hen met veel precisie en liefde proberen na te spelen. Zo kan je ook je eigen verbeelding aan het werk zetten. En als een mannelijke acteur het levensverhaal vertelt van een oma uit Limburg, past dat in een voorstelling die gaat over identiteit, en kan dat ook iets ontroerends hebben. Het is voor een acteur ook een mooie manier van spelen. Meestal gebruik je als acteur de houdingen en bewegingen die bij je eigen lichaam horen. Nu kruipen we echt in het lichaam van een ander.

Zouden de geïnterviewde mensen die komen kijken zich nog kunnen herkennen? JACOBS: Zeker. De namen van de geïnterviewden zijn wel veranderd, maar we blijven redelijk

toelaten toch één groep te vormen, maar uiteindelijk hebben we ons gerealiseerd dat het onmogelijk is om die Belgische identiteit te vinden, en dat het ook niet interessant of belangrijk is. Wat belangrijk is, is de veelheid, het verschil. JACOBS: Nationaliteit is iets begrenzends en dat is helemaal niet hoe mensen zijn en hoe ze samen functioneren. Het gaat niet over die grenslijn die iemand op de grond getekend heeft. We hopen dat we door iets te vertellen over identiteit, iets vertellen over de mens. Omdat het zo’n algemeen en universeel thema is.

GREET JACOBS:

Hebben jullie tijdens het maken ook specifiek gedacht aan de jeugd in het publiek?

dicht bij de werkelijkheid omdat die zo mooi is. Er zitten echt bijzondere verhalen tussen, dus daar hoeven wij als theatermaker niet veel meer bij te verzinnen. Op een onnavolgbare manier vertellen ze allemaal samen wat België betekent. Daar komen natuurlijk oude clichés bij kijken, maar zo gaat het ook heel erg over het België van vandaag, in al zijn variëteit en met al zijn contradicties.

Wat heb je zelf tijdens de research nog ontdekt over dat België van vandaag? DELRUE: Voor mij waren de Oostkantons echt een ontdekking. We zijn daar drie dagen in juni geweest toen het mooi weer was. Een prachtig stuk van ons land dat we allebei niet kenden. De Duitstalige gemeenschap komt niet vaak in het nieuws, maar ze zijn allemaal supertrots om Belg te zijn en wilden graag geïnterviewd worden. SZÉZOT: Ik kende Eddy Wally niet, maar zij kenden Grand Jojo dan weer niet. (Lacht) Wat

me ook verraste, waren de vele accenten en dialecten die in Vlaanderen bestaan. Veel meer dan in Wallonië. In de voorstelling spreken we verschillende talen, maar ik beleef ook veel plezier aan het herkennen van de verschillen tussen het Oost-Vlaams en het Limburgs. Maar vooral viel me op dat iedereen – van de Oostkantons tot West-Vlaanderen en Wallonië – het wel over frieten en chocola heeft, maar dat niemand een supergrote nationale trots heeft. In Frankrijk moet je niet ver zoeken om dat chauvinisme aan te treffen, maar hier heb je dat niet en dat lijkt me goed. Zo wordt België ondertiteld ook minder een stuk over de Belgische identiteit dan een stuk over de mensen in het algemeen. We hebben gemerkt dat de term identiteit heel beperkend is. Het leidt ertoe dat je mensen stigmatiseert en hen herleidt tot één bepaald type, één groep. Initieel wilden wij op zoek gaan naar zaken die de communautaire verdeeldheid in België overstegen en die ons

JACOBS: Zeker, omdat het thema identiteit ook heel erg speelt bij de jeugd en hoe die opgroeit. DELRUE: Die gasten zijn ook bezig met de groepen waar ze al dan niet bij willen horen. Velen denken dan dat zij de enigen zijn die daarmee in de knoop liggen, en dat zullen we kunnen relativeren. Dat iedereen daarmee worstelt en dat identiteit niet per se verbonden is aan de plek waar je vandaan komt, maar dat een vrouw van vijftig die haar man verliest ook in een identiteitscrisis kan terechtkomen en zich afvragen wie ze nu is. JACOBS: We hebben ook jongeren geïnterviewd. Die getuigenissen kunnen naast die van een vrouw van tachtig die op haar zestigste nog de liefde van haar leven vindt, komen te staan. Als de balans goed zit, kan iedereen zich met iedereen identificeren. We zouden het fijn vinden als met deze voorstelling een paar van de hokjes waarin we elkaar indelen, zouden sneuvelen. SZÉZOT: Of dat je op zijn minst eens in zo’n hokje naar binnen gluurt.

uelques jours avant la sortie d’un premier album intitulé Voie Lactée, le noyau dur d’Atome nous donne rendez-vous dans son studio d’enregistrement. Le groupe imaginé par David Picard (ex-Applause) et Remy Lebbos (ex-Vismets) a pris ses quartiers aux abords du canal, dans un appartement sis à deux pas de Tour et Taxis. Plusieurs fois par semaine, de bon matin, les deux garçons se retrouvent ici. Un café plus tard, ils prennent la direction du petit studio qui jouxte le salon. La quiétude est au rendez-vous. Irréprochable, l’isolation acoustique renforce encore l’intimité de la pièce. Blotti entre un sofa moelleux et une collection de synthés vintage, le duo s’affaire autour de ses instruments. « Quand je me suis mis en quête d’un appartement, j’avais un seul critère de recherche en tête », précise Remy, le propriétaire des lieux. « Je désirais un endroit sans voisin. Cela partait d’une bonne intention : je voulais jouer de la musique sans déranger tout le monde. J’occupe cet espace depuis 2010. De fil en aiguille, j’ai décidé de le remanier en vue d’y aménager un local entièrement dédié à la musique. J’ai dû faire plusieurs essais pour tester l’acoustique, surélever le niveau du sol et renforcer les murs. » Après un an de chantier, le projet se concrétise enfin. Large baie vitrée,

cloisons antibruit et enceintes dernier cri entourent à présent une belle console d’enregistrement. « Au final, cet outil de travail est vraiment en phase avec les productions contemporaines : il est pratique et intimiste, totalement connecté aux réalités de disques qui, de plus en plus souvent, sont pensés et composés à la maison. »

NAVETTE SPATIALE Chez Atome, le processus créatif s’accommode généralement d’un voyage dans le temps. « L’embryon de chaque morceau provient en effet de maquettes qui traînent sur mon disque dur depuis des années », explique le chanteur Remy Lebbos. « Mais ces anciennes démos ne correspondent en rien à l’esthétique d’Atome. Partant de là, on doit toujours se demander comment les « atomiser » ? Nous avons trouvé la réponse sur le clavier d’un Moog, un

synthétiseur que nous utilisons pour reproduire les sons de la basse. Tout part de là. Ensuite, nous ajoutons la rythmique et une ligne de voix. À la fin, chaque titre est peaufiné avec un complément de textures et d’arrangements. » Dans ce petit laboratoire audiophile, les parties jouées à la guitare sont toutes filtrées par le prisme d’une pédale BOSS CE-1 Chorus. « C’est grâce à cet appareil que nous obtenons des sonorités à la fois sucrées et colorées. » Fruit de longues heures de réflexion, les chansons d’Atome promènent aujourd’hui la langue française sous un arc-en-ciel de pop moderne. « L’écriture des paroles en français a fortement contribué à baliser l’identité de notre projet », souligne David Picard. Pour poser des mots sur ses morceaux, le duo s’échange des SMS, griffonne des lettres sur un coin de table, allant jusqu’à revoir sa copie accoudé dans un bar. « À travers cet album, nous racontons une histoire, la nôtre, en exploitant le thème de la bienveillance. En ce sens, nous voyons notre musique comme un moyen d’échapper aux réalités d’un monde dur et terriblement cruel. Nous envisageons d’ailleurs Atome comme une navette spatiale. Le cockpit de cet engin imaginaire est notre atelier : un espace créatif où l’on peut tout se permettre. Cette fantaisie nous ramène à une forme d’innocence, une spontanéité que chacun à tendance à perdre en passant à l’âge adulte. »

DE GOLDORAK À TAME IMPALA Inspirée par des souvenirs d’enfance et quelques génériques de dessins animés japonais (Ulysse 31, Albator, Goldorak), la musique du duo bruxellois met ses synthétiseurs au service de mélodies rétrofuturistes et attachantes. Kaléidoscope d’influences mutantes, le premier album d’Atome s’envole ainsi sous un ciel étoilé, propulsant de fines particules d’Air, Alain Chamfort, Tame Impala, -M-, Zombie Zombie ou Elli et Jacno. Projet bicéphale et ambivalent, Atome est un point de fusion : le trait d’union entre deux personnalités artistiques. « Au point de départ, nous pensions porter ce projet de bout en bout, en faisant tout à deux », indique David Picard. « Mais la perspective de transposer notre univers sur scène a sérieusement modifié la donne. Dès les premiers concerts, nous sommes devenus un vrai groupe. » Un collectif à observer de près, dès ce vendredi, sous les serres du Botanique.

Often seen as an artifact from the Baroque period, the Iranian-American musician is ready to prove that there’s so much more to the corded instrument than Bach or The Addams Family theme tune. — JASPER CROONEN

et me make one thing clear: Mahan Esfahani truly is the bad boy of the harpsichord. The Telegraph called him “radical”, The Guardian opted for “provocative”, and on Twitter, he himself went with: “The harpsichordist your mother warned you about.” When you read these accolades, you might have a rough idea of the kind of musician I’m describing. But for me, all those descriptions clicked about fifteen minutes into the interview. That was when Mahan Esfahani used the word “schmuck”, a word you don’t usually hear come out of classical musicians’ mouths. He used it as follows: “This one programmer once told me: ‘We

just don’t do harpsichord music.’ And I told the schmuck: ‘Well you don’t know the first thing Mahan Esfahani: in key with the harpsichord about music then.’” Now you get who I’m talking to. Ever since he the Sydney Opera House. You’ve been staying with the instrument for quite some time now. What is it you’re working towards? MAHAN ESFAHANI: I want the harpsichord to be an instrument on par with the violin or the piano. They dominate the stage. Most concerti programmed worldwide are for those two instruments. But why shouldn’t the harpsichord be up there too? There are beautiful concerti for harpsichord. Not only by Bach and Mozart but also by Glass or Poulenc. There’s just such an immense library of great harpsichord music that people, even people in the industry who are supposed to be familiar with all kinds of classical music, don’t know about or flat-out refuse to listen to. That’s ludicrous.

Isn’t it limiting that, while you’re trying to push the instrument into the modern age, you’re obliged to play a lot of old music? ESFAHANI: Nobody is forcing me to

play old music! I play the music I play because I like it. The Renaissance composer William Byrd, who I’ll be playing in Brussels, is amazing. I love him. You play that music because it’s a choice. But music from the here and now is just as important. Contemporary composers like Miroslav Srnka. Now more than ever, people are finding ways to utilize the unique acoustic qualities of the instrument. Personally, I discovered a massive amount of interesting modern and contemporary music through my love for the harpsichord. I think that’s also an important role I can play, to help people discover those compositions.

It strikes me as ironic that you’re fighting for a revival of an old instrument but then you’ll be playing a concert on historic instruments that are part of a museum collection.

ESFAHANI: I disagree. Violinists

glorify the Stradivarius as well don’t they? It’s not that I deliberately want to play on old instruments, but the fact is these instruments are really good. Though it’s important not to parasite or romanticize this. Some musicians tend to forget that these are instruments meant to express something. A Baroque harpsichord is inevitably going to express something else than a custom-built brand-new carbon fibre one. It’s your job as a musician to look for what you want to express and find what you need to do that. It’s in the name: they are instruments.

“I want the harpsichord to be an instrument on par with the violin or the piano” If what you want is to revaluate the harpsichord, do you need to stick to classical music? Isn’t popular music helping the revaluation just as much? ESFAHANI: It’s true that loads of

people know the harpsichord through those four notes and two claps in the theme tune to The Addams Family or through The Beatles or Simon & Garfunkel. But to call that a revaluation, in my opinion, would be wrong. That’s not what I would call great music. I want to revaluate the harpsichord, but by introducing listeners to great music. When something is used as a trope it loses value. It’s a question you must always ask yourself, not only in classical music, but in all artforms. At what cost are more people getting to know this? For me the benefits of diverging into popular music do not outweigh the costs.

Na het vertrek van Nicolas Rombouts raapte Gregory Frateur de scherven op en nam de tijd om Dez Mona weer bij elkaar te lijmen. Dat en andere verhalen vertelt Book of many, de nieuwe plaat van onze favoriete Antwerpse avant-gardeboysband. — TOM ZONDERMAN

RIVIER Uiteraard volgde er een periode van bezinning na de ruptuur. Frateur moest tijd nemen. Die vond hij door uit te wijken naar de danswereld. “We hadden met Dez Mona al muziek gemaakt voor het werk van choreografe Ann Van den Broek van WArd/waRD,” vertelt Frateur. “Ann had mij al vaak gevraagd om ook mee op het podium te staan. Daar had ik plots de tijd voor, en dus heb ik mij daar helemaal in ondergedompeld. Ik was sowieso op zoek naar wie ik ben als performer. Niet alleen als zanger en als componist, maar ook hoe ik op een podium sta, met mijn lichaam. Dat dansen heeft me daarbij enorm geholpen.” De confrontatie tijdens de lange tournees met WArd/waRD was groot, het keurslijf strak. Terwijl hij in de muziek altijd zoveel mogelijk vrijheid opzocht, moest Frateur zich nu aan structuren houden. Daar groeiden frustraties uit, maar ook kracht. De beperking werkte

bevrijdend. “Je voelt je één met de grond waarin je staat, je begrijpt wat er met je lichaam gebeurt.” En je moet leren stappen, vertelt Frateur lachend. “Ann vindt het belangrijk dat je je voeten parallel houdt. Veel dansers kunnen dat niet. Op den duur ben je daar zo mee bezig dat je niet meer gewoon kan wandelen.” Zijn ervaringen maakten een ander mens van de voormalige kapper en gediplomeerde schrijnwerker. Niet alleen fysiek – de man bun is geknipt, de baard getrimd, het lijf een paar ponden lichter –, ook mentaal: rust is de crux van Book of many. “I’m transformed,” zingt Frateur dan ook in ‘Half river half man’. “Dat heeft daar allemaal mee te maken. Maar ook dat ik opnieuw vader ben geworden. En dat ik twee jaar geleden de liefde heb gevonden.” Frateur vertelt hoe dat een levenslange zoektocht is geweest, dat hij altijd dacht dat dta soort ware liefde niet voor hem was weggelegd. “Voor de vorm en de tekst van die song heb ik me laten inspireren door de Nederlandse schrijver Martin Michael Driessen. In een van

“In de danswereld heb ik ontdekt wie ik ben als performer” zijn novelles, Rivieren, vertelt hij over een jonge vlotter die hout transporteert van de Balkan naar Nederland, en de onmogelijke liefde van hem voor zijn baas. Die trip, hoe die man één wordt met de rivier, was voor mij een grote metafoor voor de liefde.” Als een meanderende rivier sijpelde ook de muziek weer binnen. Frateur dacht aan een soloplaat, maar toen hij samen met Roel Van Camp en Tijs Delbeke muziek mocht bedenken bij Skai blue, de kortfilm van zijn nieuwe lief, de Antwerpse regisseur Guido Verelst, vielen de puzzelstukken opnieuw in elkaar. “De muziek die we toen maakten, was heel uitgepuurd: stem, accordeon en piano. In die beperking zag ik plots veel mogelijkheden. Een bas, bijvoorbeeld, hoeft niet van een bassist te komen.” Samen met de gitaarwolkjes van Sjoerd Bruil en wat rudimentaire laptopbeats hier en daar schilderden Frateur en co weemoedige, maar berustende klanklandschappen bij elkaar die uiteindelijk stolden in Book of many. Waarin de accordeon tranen doet rollen, en de steeds zoeter klinkende stem van Frateur ze droogt. “In het werk van Ann moet ik eigenlijk acteren, ik moet nadenken over hoe je iets moet vertellen op een geloofwaardige manier. Dat heb ik doorgetrokken naar de muziek. Moet ik echt constant alles uit mijn stem halen? Of kan ik me ook beperken tot één segment? Ik kan veel met mijn stem bespelen, maar op deze

plaat ben ik daar anders mee omgesprongen.” Er kwam ook inspiratie uit een andere hoek: de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Frateur werkte mee aan GoneWest, dat de voorbije jaren culturele projecten organiseerde ter herdenking van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Songs als ‘Poppies’ en ‘Darkest hour’ groeiden daaruit. “Ik heb daarvoor heel veel onderzoek gedaan, onder meer met het kenniscentrum van het In Flanders Fields Museum. De uitdaging was om in die liedjes hoop te leggen. ‘Darkest hour’, een compositie van Roel, doet precies dat: op het moment dat het niet donkerder kan worden, opnieuw het licht zien. Iedereen heeft zo wel zijn donkerste uur, je hoeft daarvoor niet naar het front te gaan.”

SCHULD Een sleutelnummer op Book of many, is ‘Blame’. Nina Simone op haar fragielst, zou je kunnen zeggen. “Je bent de tweede die dat zegt,” lacht Frateur. “De eerste was mijn vriend. Ik vond het eerst geen goede vergelijking, omdat ik een heel slechte pianist ben. Voor mij is Nina Simone niet alleen een fantastische zangeres, maar ook een fantastische muzikante.” Maar Frateur ziet nu wel een link in dat broze karakter van de song. “Voor de opnames van Book of many zijn we samen met producer Dave Menkehorst naar de Ardèche getrokken, maar ‘Blame’ is ingeblikt in mijn appartement tijdens de repetities. Heel eerlijk, ik op stem en piano, met gekraak van stoelen erbij. Eigenlijk was het een demo, maar het moment klopte helemaal. Ik besefte snel dat de essentie in die opname vervat zat.” “At the end, who’s to blame? For where this ends there are no winners,” klinkt het met verstilde stem. “Ik heb dat liedje vrij snel geschreven na het vertrek van Nicolas, ja. Wie had er schuld aan onze breuk? Gingen we daar ruzie over maken? Nicolas en ik zijn nog altijd vrienden, we hebben zelfs nog samengewerkt voor de producties van WArd/waRD. Je kan niet bij één iemand naar de schuld zoeken. Wij hebben daar allemaal een aandeel in. Mensen hebben vandaag heel veel nood aan winnaars en verliezers, maar die zijn er hier niet. Laten we dit eerder zien als een nieuwe start dan als een einde.”

e zijn terug bij de kern,” vertelden Nicolas Rombouts en Gregory Frateur ons bij de release van hun vorige album, het behoorlijk symbolisch getitelde Origin. Dat was in 2015, het enthousiasme spatte ervan af, beide heren klopten elkaar op de schouder. Hoe ze opnieuw de chemie hadden gevonden waarmee ze meer dan tien jaar geleden de Brusselse Brigittinenkerk in de fik staken – bewijsmateriaal van hun pyromanie werd vastgelegd op Pursued sinners. Hoe vruchtbaar hun taal was en hoe ze aan een halve noot genoeg hadden. Hoe ze, ten slotte, stonden te popelen om al meteen de volgende plaat op te nemen. Die plaat is er nu. Ze heet Book of many. Maar Nicolas Rombouts werkte er niet aan mee. Drie jaar geleden, in volle Origin-tournee, hield de bassist het na dertien intense jaren plots voor bekeken. “Dat had niemand zien aankomen,” zegt Gregory Frateur in het Antwerpse café L’Entrepot du Congo, voor even onze veilige haven terwijl iedereen buiten uitglijdt over de eerste sneeuw. “De opname van die plaat was voor ons beiden een speeltuin, maar bij de liveconcerten brak er iets voor hem in onze samenwerking. En ineens was het op. Dat was een shock.” Is daarmee een stuk uit het DNA van Dez Mona geknipt? Absoluut. Maar het hertekenen van de genen betekende niet het einde van de band, benadrukt Frateur. “Je geesteskind geef je niet zomaar op.” Hij raapte de brokstukken bij elkaar, en vond lijm bij oudgedienden Roel Van Camp (accordeon), Sjoerd Bruil (gitaar) en Tijs Delbeke (van alles). Die laatste meet ondertussen de koorts van Balthazar op op hun nieuwe tournee, allrounder Tom Pintens komt hem op het podium vervangen. “Vroeger startte het werkproces bij Nicolas en mij, nu is het veel meer een samenwerking tussen iedereen,” zegt Frateur over Dez Mona 2.0.

ous les fans de quizz savent que Moonlight a remporté l’Oscar du meilleur film il y a deux ans, après que La La Land a d’abord été déclaré vainqueur par erreur. Tous les cinéphiles savent que ce joyau beau comme le clair de lune n’a pas volé cette victoire. Mais quelle suite donner à un tel succès ? Le réalisateur et scénariste Barry Jenkins n’est pas resté paralysé par les attentes énormes et a fait un film encore plus beau. If Beale Street Could Talk est une adaptation du roman éponyme de James Baldwin, écrivain-poète-orateur engagé et très doué qui, trente ans après sa mort, est à juste titre de retour sur le devant de la scène. Dans le Harlem des années septante, deux jeunes amis d’enfance découvrent à quel point l’amour peut être intense. Mais c’est un amour impossible. Fonny (Stephan James) est accusé de viol et se retrouve derrière les barreaux. Tish (KiKi Layne) s’avère être enceinte, mais cela ne l’empêche pas de faire tout ce qui est en son pouvoir pour empêcher que son bien-aimé soit condamné. Étant donné son innocence, cela devrait être un jeu d’enfant, mais étant donné la couleur de sa peau et le racisme révoltant, ordinaire et structurel, c'est un combat de titans. Barry Jenkins souligne l’inégalité cruelle et toujours actuelle qui détruit des vies, plutôt qu’il ne la dénonce et ne se laisse pas aveugler par la colère et l’indignation. Car il n’y a pas que cela. Il y a aussi l’amour et la résilience. L’amour entre deux âmes sœurs mais aussi celui des familles qui se liguent dans les moments difficiles. Jenkins célèbre la force

de cet amour avec tout ce qu’il a en lui. Sans négliger les belles phrases de Baldwin, il transforme le livre en un film voluptueux au romantisme osé, dans une atmosphère de mélancolie et de tristesse. Les temps s’entremêlent, la précipitation est taboue et les acteurs peu connus sont tous convaincants. Il recherche toujours et partout la beauté : dans le décor, la photographie, la symbiose entre l’image et la magnifique bande originale du compositeur Nicholas Britell. L’œil, le cœur, le cerveau : If Beale Street Could Talk fait appel à tout ça à la fois.

Fonny wordt beschuldigd van verkrachting, de zwangere Tish wil er alles aan doen om haar geliefde een veroordeling te besparen. Racisme maakt daar een titanenstrijd van. Jenkins signaleert de ongelijkheid eerder dan ze aan te klagen. In plaats daarvan bezingt hij de kracht van liefde en weerbaarheid met weelderige, zinnenprikkelende, onbeschaamd romantische cinema in een mantel van weemoed en droefenis. NL

Veel onafhankelijke Amerikaanse films van uitstekende makelij krijgen geen kans in onze bioscopen. Het is wat vreemd dat Night comes on de dans ontspringt en veel sterkere films als The tale en Leave no trace niet. Maar dat kan je dit regiedebuut van tv-actrice Jordana Spiro (Ozark) niet aanwrijven. Zij doet alles volgens het (Sundance-)boekje. Daardoor ontbreekt het wat aan stootkracht en verrassingen, maar storend is dat niet. Zonder daarop uit te zijn imponeert het grote talent Dominique Fishback (zie ook tv-topper The deuce) als een achttienjarige die zich meteen na haar vrijlating uit de jeugdgevangenis aan een vuurwapen helpt om zich te wreken op de man die haar moeder doodde. Zal ze tijdig inzien dat ze zo haar eigen toekomst of wat daarvan overblijft, het nekschot geeft? Rond die vraag is het drama opgebouwd, maar een stuk interessanter is de relatie met haar tien jaar jongere zus die in een pleeggezin is terechtgekomen. Zij heeft veel minder last van duistere gedachten, maar kan een grote zus goed gebruiken. De verzorgde, tedere filmstijl verzacht de afspiegeling van een harde wereld. (NR)

The adaptation of a cyberpunk manga by Yukito Kishiro was a twenty-year passion project for James Cameron. The incredibly successful director of The Terminator and Titanic wrote a script, raised an enormous budget, and developed the necessary technology, but he ultimately decided to leave the directing to Robert Rodriguez, best-known for Machete and Spy Kids. Alita: Battle Angel is not of the quality that we would otherwise expect of Cameron, but Rodriguez does serve exciting action with much more punch than the average superhero movie and with a much more likeable protagonist. In a post-apocalyptic metropolis, a doctor uses pre-war technology to reanimate a cyborg. Alita is a very sweet adolescent who gradually discovers that she is also an amazing fighter. The episodic plot contains a number of implausibilities and the dialogues repeatedly have to clarify what is going on. Older viewers are not the primary target audience. But is this an entertaining film? Ohyalita! (NR)

Va-t-elle se rendre compte à temps que c’est se tirer une balle dans le pied pour son propre avenir ou ce qu’il en reste ? Le style soigné et tendre du film adoucit le reflet d’un monde dur.

Het postapocalyptische Alita: battle angel haalt niet het hoge niveau dat we van Cameron gewoon zijn, maar Rodriguez serveert wel wervelende actie met meer pit dan de doorsneesuperheldenfilm en een veel sympathieker hoofdpersonage.

In her directorial debut, TV actress Jordana Spiro (Ozark) does everything by the book, but that is not a problem. Dominique Fishback (The Deuce) gives an impressive performance as an eighteen-year-old who gets hold of a gun as soon as she is released from a juvenile detention centre, so that she can take revenge on the man who killed her mother. Will she realize in time that this will destroy her future, or whatever is left of it? The refined and tender cinematography softens this reflection of a hard world.

The MIMA has reached its sixth chapter, and is eagerly delving into all the punk psychedelia, exquisite inner spaces, and juicy corporate nonsense that is drifting around the Brussels scene. — KURT SNOEKX “Approach, do not fear,” the “Psycho-test Whirlkopf/ Schwarzpool v. 3.6” gives to read on a seedy screen. You find yourself in a dreary prefab office plucked straight out of the 1980s (including brochures, a waiting room, and photos of grinning corporate managers), and once you have passed a closed reception counter you are guided around the wonderful world of corporate madness and illiterate algorithms. “You are a self-driving car and your brakes are faulty,” the test continues. “What do you do in that situation? I stick to the road and I drive over cats. I change lanes and I drive over dogs.” The company responsible for

these enticing questions is iMabelpro Eurostom Holding Group S.A., an audacious little company that endeavours to sell you an artwork based on thorough research (a questionnaire, the “Psycho-test”, and a biometric scan) and designed to match your highly personal profile. The brains behind this “Self’art” – try moving the apostrophe one letter to the left – and the Holding are the three French, Brussels-based rascals of Gogolplex. These crazy DIY tinkers are overindulging themselves at the MIMA with an hilarious deconstruction of the disconsolate corporate branding consultancy trademark innovation potential experience (for lack of a

better word) by veritably reconstructing it. Because you can’t beat reality. In short: hot air has never smelled so enticing. Give these guys a solo show, now! Apart from this promo babble, “Dream Box” is also exploring the bizarre entrails and the malleable and boundless unconscious that resists reason. Whether or not that is justified. The bankruptcy of reason is articulated most incisively by the Spanish graffiti artist Escif, whose musical incantations highlight the crushing responsibility of us all. Felipe Pantone, on the other hand, drags our oversaturated brain into the dizzying world of information technology. Miracle doctor Elzo Durt sees his ingeniously composed punk psychedelia erected in 3D, and the Hell’o collective rolls their utterly imposing “Innerspace” out over a whole room. In other words: the MIMA dreams out of the box.

et was 16.00 uur en in theorie zou restaurant Fresca gesloten zijn. En toch zagen we door de vitrine dat de chef zich aan het uitsloven was. Het is dat, zoals de naam van de plek al suggereert, hier alles steunt op het principe van verse pasta’s. Linguine, pappardelle, penne… elke dag schuift er een andere soort voor het voetlicht. De kok zo in de weer zien met eieren en bloem, oefende een onweerstaanbare aantrekkingskracht op ons uit om de deur open te duwen van de plek die ons voordien al sympathiek voorkwam. Hoeft het nog gezegd dat we niet werden teleurgesteld? Fresca staat voor een Italiaanse keuken waar we ons thuis voelen: familiale bereidingen op basis van toegankelijke producten. Hier blijf je met andere woorden ver weg van flamboyante eettentjes waar kwistig witte truffel wordt geraspt alsof het ordinaire parmezaan zou zijn. Het decor houdt zich aan de beginselen van de eenvoud. Een open, wit betegelde keuken die uitloopt in een kleine zaal met meubilair dat eenheid in verscheidenheid vindt. Een grappige voetnoot vormen de kaasraspen die dienstdoen als verlichting. En het bestek dat ongedwongen in oude conservenblikken logeert, waar voordien gepelde tomaten woonden. Bij ons bezoek, op een woensdag, was Fresca ingenomen door enkele kleurrijke families uit de wijk, die deze kombuis al hebben geadopteerd. De kinderen van het gezelschap zorgden voor een erg levendige lunch en zullen later ongetwijfeld hun ouders bedanken dat ze hun de smaak voor goede dingen hebben bijgebracht. Zeiden we al dat we ons hier thuis voelden? Het onthaal was, zoals je zou verwachten, tegelijk ontspannen en vriendelijk. Woensdag bleek tagliatelledag, en die mochten we doorbrengen voor een lunch, bestaande uit

een hoofdgerecht en een drankje (€11,90). De tagliatelle verscheen vandaag all’arrabiata, met een saus op basis van pepers, tomaten, look en basilicum. Dat aanbod is erg flexibel: als je dat wenst, krijg je je tagliatelle zonder tomatensaus, zonder pepers, of zelfs in een andere versie (cacio e pepe (€12,90), salsiccia (€12,90), funghi e tartufo (€13)…). Onze arrabiata-saus bleek uitmuntend, op smaak gebracht zoals het hoort en, vooral, mooi onderstreept door de onvergelijkelijke beboterde textuur van de verse pasta. De zachte pittigheid van het gerecht heeft onze lippen een goed deel van de namiddag laten tintelen. Als een subtiele Italiaanse zoen.

Mercredi c’est « tagliatelle ». On les savoure à la faveur du lunch (11,90€, plat + boisson). Ce jour-là, il s’agissait d’arrabiata. L’offre est très souple, on propose le plat sans sauce tomate, sans piment ou dans d’autres versions (cacio e pepe (12,90€); salsiccia (12,90€); funghi e tartufo (13€), …). Verdict ? La sauce est exquise, relevée comme il faut et soulignée par l’incomparable texture beurrée des pâtes fraîches. La douce brûlure du mets nous est restée sur les lèvres comme un baiser d’Italie. FR

Des plantes qui en ont dans le pantalon Sur le coin de la rue de la Clé et de la rue de Flandre se trouve un bâtiment particulier en forme de blocs gris, mais derrière la façade se cache une vraie perle de créativité. Les frères Siaens y exploitent un petit hôtel, un bureau créatif et… un magasin de plantes. « On ne voulait pas d’un nom avec le terme plante ou jardin », nous explique Ben Siaens de Rocco Pantalòn. « Je voulais un magasin de jardinage aux allures urbaines. » Et c’est chose faite. Le magasin regorge de plantes exotiques qui y semblent au sommet de leur forme, et Siaens y expérimente avec des pousses, des pots de fleurs et des conseils sur mesure. Bob Moses est le nom d’un célèbre urbaniste américain. Surnommé « le maître de la construction » le concepteur des grands boulevards new-yorkais prête désormais son identité à un duo canadien. Tom Howie et Jimmy Vallance viennent de Vancouver mais se sont retrouvés à Brooklyn, au Marcy Hotel, haut lieu de l’électro alternative qui a notamment révélé la musique de Nicolas Jaar. Entre véritables instruments et science synthétique, Bob Moses plonge l’auditeur dans un enchaînement de rythmes hypnotiques et stylés où le présent (James Blake, Trentemøller, Chet Faker) joue à cachecache avec le passé (Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, New Order). Ten years ago, Paul Kalkbrenner made his breakthrough with Berlin Calling, a film about a drug addicted techno DJ. “Sky and Sand” became the anthem of a generation. Growing up in East Berlin, he was twelve when the wall fell and he could engross himself in the rising techno scene in his reunited hometown. In the wake of his breakthrough, big record labels took notice and he moved towards a more poppy sound, but the mixtape series Back to the Future (2016) signalled a return to his raw, stripped-back beats of the early years. The recent Parts of Life was also inspired by the rise of techno in the Berlin of his youth, and he injects that pumping underground sound with more open, melodious pieces. (TP) EN

Wel over de administratieve werknemers van de Citroën-garage, wier geesten rondwaren in Kanal. Of zo lijkt het toch. In de voormalige bureaus van de garage heeft de kunsttempel ruim 70 ontwerpen (van onder meer Muller Van Severen, Marcel Broodthaers en Philippe Starck) uit de collecties van het Centre Pompidou en het Brusselse ADAM gestouwd, die samen denkbeeldige werkruimtes als het Spookbureau of het Bureau van de Radicaliteiten tot leven brengen. Dans les images d’Estelle Lagarde, ils accompagnent la vie et peuvent aussi se manifester dans les hôpitaux, les auberges, les cloîtres et les châteaux. Cette photographe autodidacte a construit un univers drôle et étrange soigneusement cadré où des envies de peinture rencontrent des souvenirs de cinéma.
