Border invites all Alumni to attend the 2010 Alumni Activities Greetings! Hope you all are enjoying the beautiful Spring weather. Our first BryanLGH College of Health Sciences Alumni Weekend is June 11-13, 2010. The Events Committee has planned a fabulous weekend for us to reconnect with our classmates. Please complete and return the enclosed registration for this fun-filled weekend. The 2010 Alumni Award recipients will be honored on Saturday, June 12 at the Luncheon.

A great time was had by all of the attendees at Affair To Remember on February 20, 2010. We raised over $2,000 for the Alumni Association. Start thinking about your table designs for 2011! It is so much fun viewing the beautiful tables that have been so creatively designed by the table host/hostess. If you have never attended put this on your will not miss list for February 19, 2011. Thank you to the Honor & Awards, Fundraising and Events Committees. You have done such a great job of getting the BryanLGH College of Health Sciences Alumni Association off to a fabulous start! Board of Trustees Appoints MacLeod Walls as President We are delighted to announce that Elizabeth MacLeod Walls, PhD has been appointed President of the BryanLGH College of Health Sciences. Elizabeth has served as Interim President of the College since Phylis Hollamon’s retirement in August 2009. Elizabeth originally joined the College in 2007 as the Director of Institutional Effectiveness. In 2008 she was also named Dean of General Education. Most recently, Elizabeth led the College’s effort to achieve accreditation. A Lincoln native, Elizabeth received her undergraduate degree from Hiram College and her doctorate from Texas Christian University. Prior to joining BryanLGH, Elizabeth was the Executive Director and Program Director of the Lilly Endowment Grant Supporting Clergy Education. She also held administrative and faculty positions at Nebraska Wesleyan University. RN-BSN Hybrid Completion Option BryanLGH College of Health Sciences will begin offering its NLNAC accredited RN-BSN completion option in a hybrid format Fall 2010. A hybrid format uses a variety of instructional methods in a non-traditional format to increase flexibility for nurses while still having direct contact with faculty. The hybrid format involves a mix of face-to-face on-campus sessions with

independent study and on-line learning assignments. During a semester, a class will meet on campus three times with supplemental work completed on-line or as independent study over the semester. The three on-campus sessions will be scheduled using Friday evenings and Saturday days. If interested, please contact Assistant Professor Karen Westover at 402-481-8857.

Partnership Brings Realistic Medical Scenarios to Healthcare Students Southeast Community College, BryanLGH College of Health Sciences and BryanLGH Medical Center are partnering to provide healthcare students access to state-of-the-art, high-fidelity patient simulators by creating the Center for Excellence in Clinical Simulation.

include assessing a child with asthma, administering medications, performing interventions and simulating a heart attack. Mother-baby scenarios include an uncomplicated delivery or one with complications such as hemorrhage or an unresponsive baby.

The Center is a collaborative effort between the two colleges and the medical center, who share a common vision to provide high quality education to tomorrow’s healthcare providers. The partnership increases the number of students and clinicians that have access to this advanced learning technology and increases the number of faculty available to teach.

Student Chelsey Bartling, of Malcolm, got to use the new birthing simulator for the first time on March 11. “I got to deliver a baby today,” she said with a smile. “The simulators provide a good learning environment. You can learn from your mistakes without hurting someone and having to learn the hard way.” She feels that having access to these learning tools will make her a better nurse.

There are three adult simulators, a pediatric simulator, and the newest addition – a birthing simulator named Noelle and an infant named Baby Hal. Multiple patient care scenarios can be created, ranging from basic to complex. Examples

Meet the Plastinates The newest tools for innovative, hands-on learning at BryanLGH College of Health Sciences have arrived! The College has purchased two plastinates, which are produced by BODY WORLDS. We are the first academic institution in the U.S. to receive these whole body specimens. This is an important advancement in
