Turkey should clarify priorities on IoE and M2M, starting from R&D support. The 5th Technology Platforms meeting of 2016 ‘Internet of Everything’ (IoE) was held on August 25. The Peppers & Rogers Turkey General Manager Selim Uçer drew attention to everyone speaking about IoT and big data topics in his presentation at the event. It used to be mentioned by brands but now consumers are talking about these concepts and in the future, , he no longer spoke of the consumer, reminding that the objects begin to talk in the coming period things will start speaking. Selim Uçer stressed the importance of it and he stated that in the end the efficient use of big data will gain importance. “Increasing numbers of consumers was quick and personal presentations. In this picture, IoE provides differentiation through experience, makes it is easier to identify the customer and increases transparency of the entire production process.” What is the IoE and M2M awareness level in Turkey? Is our infrastructure adequate for such a development? Awareness should be evaluated by both business and public sides. Many companies in the business world express this in the comments, but I do not think they give importance to it in their everyday functioning. How much money they spend on R&D or innovation? There is a serious innovation need in both service development and big data. Making a difference in Turkey’s manufacturing and service provision is especially important on a global basis. Turkey is one of the major players in the production of home appliances and textiles. Investing in the internet of objects for this role to continue is essential. When we look at the infrastructure side, issues such as data and internet speed and taxation on the data are quite important. The speed needs to increase. However, the current speed is sufficient for many applications. There would be problems in 5 years; because when there are so many objects in communication, capacity

Turkey needs to make a choice

problems would stand out. Current practice would not have any problems, but for the future the capacity and speed should be increased. The most important of all is R&D. What is the role of R&D and what kind of support should come up? In this regard, R&D companies need more support. Redrawing the boundaries of R&D is important in this respect. Traditional R&D logic should be extended. Now, we say M2M and IoT. Turkey needs to make a choice. Strategy means making priorities. As a country, in which subjects we will be on front and on which subjects we will give more support to R&D? We should do as Taiwan did in the game subject and prioritize; because this is an ecosystem. What kind of an ecosystem we are talking about? When we try to support every subject on R&D, there will be limited development on each. If we reach high development in only one, it would be more meaningful for other players and more beneficial for the country as the developed subject

would positively affect others. Therefore, a correct prioritization is a must. R&D supports should be given to the right individuals and companies. Large companies are taking some R&D support, but mostly do not carry out much R&D activities, only maintain current projects. Therefore, it is significant for a country to reveal who really does R&D; because it is not getting incentives what matters, it is the R&D itself. What about problems? Until recently, the problem was such a funny subject. In techno-parks, they have R&D supports, but the person who would carry out R&D projects was to sit in the office. Yet today, we call it IoT and this is not an issue that can be criticized within a room. A person needs to try an innovation for agricultural sector in an actual field. However, when not in the office or in college, you do not encourage and support that person. But today, everyone is able to work outside the office. Communication structures also support it. Therefore, R&D rules should be arranged to give support to these issues and need to have a holistic approach.

Being proactive is significant in big data. What is the awareness level of companies on the issue? Large-scale companies have the willingness to invest in this issue. But, there is an issue of ‘not knowing what to do’. When we approach the issue as ‘I shall make an investment in big data’, you buy the systems but they sit there and you do not know what to do with them. The system is very important, but the development of competencies and the change of the culture are more important. When all of them are hand in hand, a real effect can be created. Here is what I witnessed during my career: Anyone who takes technology or system as a starting point does not get a result. At this point, what could be the solution? First of all, business problems should be solved and technology is needed for it. Asking the right questions and setting priorities are essential. “By using this data and create a differentiation for my customer.”, “I will differentiate my production line according to this, but how can I manage it?”, “I need 5 data here, I should make an analysis of these data

and I will keep it in such a system.” This kind of thinking will get you to the right track. I mean when you decide to cook a meal, you must have a recipe and get on the job. What we do is go shopping first, buy meat and all the vegetables and not to be able to decide what to do next. Therefore, a company should determine a strategy and set priorities before taking the entire investment steps. This is not only the way to be successful, it also allows you to make the right decisions and save. But what will be the fate of companies that are behind in this regard? Basically, differentiation will be an advantage. This means differentiation from the competition and if you do not make these investments yourself and do not go forward to a different point on this issue, your opponents will do it: Either you will be destroyed, or you will try to copy your competitors. When copying, you will always remain one step behind. It’s going to always make you stay back in the price competition, you will accept working with lower margins. By contrast, it will increase the margin of your competitors.

Don’t worry, transform considering the security focus and knowing yourself! Both the driving force and barrier of transformation is security According to Digital Transformation Security Survey results carried out by Dell on a global basis, the security unit is seen as an obstacle to digital transformation, so the security team is being involved too late to the process to make a significant impact. 97% of respondents stated that they invest in digital technologies such as mobility, cloud applications, cloud infrastructure and IoT. 18% of respondents said that they included the entire security unit to the digital transformation process; 85% expressed that if the security teams are included at an earlier stage of the project, it will contribute more to digital transformation. 89% of survey participants are aware of the fact that digital transformation takes place in the sector, only 50% believe that the transformation takes place in their organization. 27% stated that their companies are in the middle of digital transformation. 72% gave the information that they participate actively on mobile projects, 68% on cloud and 37% on IoT. However, according to the 96% of survey respondents,

there are four main challenges for the protection of digital technology: lack of financing, the risk of a security breach, the inability to find the right balance between security and employee productivity, and lastly, loss of control. On the other hand, results shows that 85% of the participants state that commercial users see the security teams as an obstacle always or at least sometimes, so they leave them outside the digital transformation projects. The same percent of participants stated that they are aware that it would be more beneficial for digital transformation to involve the security teams into projects at an earlier stage. As for the other results of the survey, only 18% of respondents stated that the security is involved in all mobile, IoT, cloud and self-service processes, while 76% think that the security is involved too late to digital transformation processes. 85% expressed that commercial users refrain from including security teams with the concern of process prevention, while 63% think that these concerns are unnecessary.

Companies of all sizes in every industry have to change in line with the digital development. Because the new players are taking place in the market, consumer preferences are changing and developing; all these are rebuilding sectoral rules. Telecom operators have to create new revenue models in the market. The reason why is that the SMS - text messages are no longer on the agenda. This is the best example of what digital deterioration can do. “SMS was one to one communication channel, but WhatsApp is a community communication tool. Even Facebook, with its encrypted messaging service on WhatsApp showed that it is related to corporate communication.” says VMware Business Solutions Strategist Elan Yanovsky. She suggests that if a company uses WhatsApp for official communication, it is essential to keep it encrypted. Elan Yanovsky states that there is a distinction such as “A guy like me who has gray hair prefers

face to face communication in banking however my daughter does not want to chat with a banker at the branch, but would like to speak via WhatsApp.” This is a digital turbulence and means change from head to toe for many sectors of business. Banking now is situated on social channels. “I know banks in Turkey that accepts loan applications via Facebook in Turkey. All sectors including banks have to consider adopting those new ideas.” Says Elan Yanovsky and also answers our questions while sharing expectations and problems: “Generally,

regulations always lag behind technology. The real change is the ‘rate of change’. Regulators are trying to understand what is going on and create regulations two years prior to the situation. To calculate a person’s credit rating with social activities on Facebook, in fact was an idea of the market taking place 1-2 years ago, for example. However, this has nothing to do with what will come into market. That means regulations are following the past. Secondly, how can you regulate a structure that you do not have any authority over? There is a financial transaction between two people in the UK and in Turkey, but the service is located in the United States and the service owner company’s headquarters is in Dubai. So, how can you organize all this global process traffic? Which country’s law is determining? What regulatory bodies are trying to carry out is a difficult job regulatory body and unfortunately, it is difficult to say that they will be 100% successful.”
