You should have the control of your own personal data MyData’s basic approach ‘defending individuals’ right to access the data collected about themselves’ is summarized as ensuring control over individuals’ own data. The main issue discussed at the three-day conference was how personal privacy can be protected in a demanding economic system. The main emphasis is summarizes as the following: ‘the information about me belongs to me and it is my right to ask when and by whom it is used and whether to share it or not.’ Questions should be answered in no time Within the event, the American journalist, columnist and author of ‘Intention Economy’ Doc Searls began his speech with the ‘Privacy, is it a new cultural phenomenon?’ question. Searls primarily made the definition of privacy as not being kept close but controlling the openness of the selected areas. Searls believes that having control over their data makes individuals stronger. Finnish Transport and Communications Minister Anne Berner stated in his speech that the data collected in the private and public sector should be open to people and it is important to have cooperation with the private sector for this objective. Whether we like it or not, the information belongs to us is being collected and used without our prior notice or permit. So, how can we protect the data that originally belong to us? MyData 2016 conference organized by Open Knowledge Finland (OKFI) in Finland’s capital, Helsinki, with the support of Ministry of Communications and Transportation tried to answer this question from August 31 to September 2.

I strongly believe that the number of this kind of events will rapidly increase in the coming period. As a country, we must work on promoting open innovation philosophy. Because the more interaction takes place between people and institutions in science and technology, the easier it gets to create a new knowledge and product. In this context, we need to take advantage of each other’s mind, knowledge and experience.

That’s exactly what open innovation enables. In the open innovation model that emphasizes on cooperation, it becomes possible to exceed the capacity of individuals and institutions. In this context, if an ecosystem where everyone shares all the risks and benefits can be built; it will ultimately enable humanity and sciences win all together. On this basis, this event held in Izmir Institute of Technology is very important in my opinion. This event highlights the role of universities as a center and the importance of interaction among companies, entrepreneurs and academics.
