This class is an introduction to clay, pottery, and the ceramics studio. Students work primarily on the potter’s wheel, learning basic throwing and forming techniques while creating functional pieces such as mugs, cups, and bowls. Students are also guided through various finishing techniques using the studio’s house slips and glazes. No previous experience needed. Class price includes your first bag of clay and open studio access during the weeks of your class. Additional clay sold separately. All glazes and firings are also included.

Mixed Level Wheel supports students across a range of skill and experience levels who have thrown on the wheel. This eight-week course is rooted in fundamentals and encourages individual projects. Demonstrations and instruction covers centering, throwing, trimming, and glazing, as well as forms and techniques determined by students. Class price includes your first bag of clay and open studio access during the weeks of your class. Additional clay sold separately. All glazes and firings are also included.

Curious about the pottery wheel? Spend a Friday night with our pottery instructors at the BCA Clay Studio. A ticket includes a wheel throwing demonstration plus access to your own wheel. You will have time to practice before making a piece that will be fired and glazed by the studio. Only one fired piece per student; no additional pieces will be kept or fired. Your fired piece will be available for pickup at the studio 4-6 weeks after your class.

Screen Print

Wednesdays, September 20-November 1, (no class 10/25), 6-8:30 pm

This introduction to screen printing shows students how to design and print t-shirts, posters, fine art, and more. Discover a variety of techniques for transferring and printing images using hand-drawn, photographic, or borrowed imagery. Students learn how to apply photo emulsion, use an exposure unit, and print on a variety of surfaces. Class price includes the use of studio equipment, emulsion, transparencies, and ink as well as open studio access during the weeks of the class. Students can bring their own screens or rent one through the studio. No experience necessary.

Printmaking

This six-week introductory class shows students a whole range of printing techniques that can be used on their own or in combination to create unique artwork. Through demonstrations and hands-on learning, students are introduced to the studio’s equipment and materials and will learn techniques such as block printing with linoleum, collagraph (a low-relief intaglio technique), and monoprint. Students are also encouraged to explore these techniques and have fun experimenting. Class price includes basic supplies as well as access to open studio during the weeks of your class. No previous experience needed.

Tiny Food Prints

Saturday, November 4, 10 am-3 pm

Using deliciously colorful food as inspiration, students will create mini masterpieces with easy-to-carve linocut blocks. Students can bring their own edible theme sketch or photo to work from, or use a selection of stencil. Local printmaker and photographer Sarah Jayne Kennelly will share techniques and tips to create your tiny prints using our rainbow of studio inks and printing press. Beginners are welcome and all supplies provided. Please bring a bag lunch.

Woodcut

Wednesdays, November 8-December 20 (no class 11/22), 2023, 6-8:30pm

Discover the unique process of woodblock printing with local artist Ashley Stagner. Students focus on fundamental relief printing to transform their designs into unique prints. The class progresses to more sophisticated processes, including multi-color printing and 2-3 color reduction block printing. Cost includes all basic materials and open studio use during the weeks of the class.

Prerequisite: Students should have either completed BCA’s Printmaking class or have previous experience and familiarity with printing techniques and the press.

Mixed Level Printmaking is for students who are comfortable with basic printmaking techniques and want to take their skills to the next level in a supportive environment. Local printmaker Susan Smereka will enrich your knowledge on familiar techniques while teaching you new processes. Students are encouraged to bring ongoing work to troubleshoot issues as a class. Class price includes basic supplies as well as access to open studio during the weeks of your class.

Spend a day in BCA’s print studio using our professional printing equipment to create handmade wrapping paper, cards, and more. Guided by local artist Kara Ware, students learn the basics of screen printing, linocut, and other techniques to create unique, shareable art. This class is great for getting to know our studio and have some fun printing. All supplies will be provided; no experience is necessary. Please bring a bag lunch.
