hello‌ Meet the New Editor What’s up Binghamton Circle K? My name is Kora P Sileo and I will be serving as your new editor this service year. I cannot wait to continue/start working with all of you. I served as your public relations chair this past year, and I had a great time making flyers to advertise for events. What I am looking forward to most about this year is learning new things about giving back to the community. I have been involved in community service for as long as I can remember, but every time I volunteer I learn something new about myself and the world. There are always new things to learn about giving back! I hope you are all looking forward to making new friends
and trying new things in this brand new service year! Keep an eye out for my monthly newsletters, which will be filled with puns and jokes. How punderful! Kora P Sileo Binghamton CKI Editor

Day of Service. .. written by Tim Leung In retrospect, I am very glad that I decided to attend this year’s Day of Service in Syracuse. The day I spent in Syracuse was one that I will look back on very fondly because of the people I met and activities I got to do. When we arrived in Syracuse, we all had our various service projects to participate in, mine being the community gardens. After my group and I arrived at the community gardens, we could instantly tell what important work we were doing for the small community that encompassed the two gardens. Our group leader informed us that the purpose of the gardens was to provide the local community with access to vegetables that are difficult for the residents to acquire, as these food items tend to be more expensive. As a result, our mission was to take out the weeds in the garden to allow for a flat soil bed that can permit the growth of new vegetables.
Shortly after we got to work, a young man named Devin approached us, lending his hand to help us. He told me that he actually lives just a few doors down from the garden and would love to do some work with us. Throughout the day, Devin grew fond of me as I did of him, and we spent most of the time together talking. I learned so much about Devin, like his interests in rapping, his inability to hurt bugs such as caterpillars, and his apparent relations with Oprah Winfrey and Chris Rock. Talking with Devin while working on the garden made the time go by so quickly, and I enjoyed every second I got to spend there. Though it was difficult to leave Devin, I know that he witnessed something grand – a group of people coming together with the same goal of bettering the community. I definitely felt very fortunate to have participated in this year’s Day of Service.
RELAY FOR LIFE by Cassie Jiang Relay For Life was a great experience. My phone died earlier that day so I spent the night phoneless, talking to other members. I spent a lot of my time walking around the track with Christina, so that she could reach her step count goal on her Fitbit. I also had the opportunity to bond with Angela, which is helpful because I am her successor as the Bake Sale Committee Chair. I walked around and went to some stands; I even won a goldfish! The luminaria ceremony was very moving. As we watched the slideshow of pictures of survivors and those lost, I became very sad. The singer during the ceremony was amazing and highly contributed to the mood. I stayed until about 2:00 in the morning. Overall the night was very enjoyable!
Who’s the Member of the Month? the ANNE-swer is…
Anne Quirk!
Anne was chosen as the member of the Month for April because of her dedication to her new role as club historian. Anne has already begun taking great pictures as historian, and she has made sure to get a wide variety of pictures from each event. At the Relay For Life event on April 29th, Anne stayed for the entire event—a whopping 12 hours. She socialized with all of the members participating—both old and new. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to the club, Anne! Keep up the good work :)

The OurSpace Project! By Melissa Levine
On April 24th, I went to Rec Park in downtown Binghamton along with Courtney, Elle, and Christina. We signed up to help volunteer with the Our Space Project, whose goal is to build an accessible park for people of special needs. We really did not know what we were signing up for, and when we initially arrived at the construction site, we were unsure if we would be of any help. Everyone was very friendly and they quickly put us to work. We geared up with safety goggles and work gloves and were shown how to use a
router machine, which is used to round the edges of building materials. We also carried materials like wood and vinyl planks around the construction site for the other workers to use. We worked for over four straight hours, and we were pretty exhausted by the end of the day but we were so proud of the hard work we put in. We left feeling like we really made a difference in our local community. I am excited to see the quick progress of the park reconstruction and can’t wait for it to be done. Our club also plans to donate proceeds of our next bake sale to the project so we can purchase a brick with “Circle K” engraved on it, and it will be placed in the park!
Representing Binghamton CKI… Jenna Spak: Historical Committee Chair New York District
Karandeep Singh: Marketing Committee Chair New York District
As a history major, naturally the position of Historical Committee Chair caught my eye. While I very much enjoyed my time as editor (a.k.a. scribe), I knew that I wanted to give someone else the opportunity. However, I knew that I still wanted to have an active role in Circle K; if not within our own club, then with the district. As a history major, I know the value of history, and I know that I wanted to learn more about the history of the New York District of Circle K. This organization has done great things not only for its local communities, but also for the world.
When I joined Circle K my freshman year, I didn’t expect it to become such a big part of my life. It was a privilege to serve as the historian and secretary for Binghamton Circle K. I knew I wanted to continue being involved in this organization, but I wasn’t sure how. Our district governor, Jerry, encouraged me to apply for a committee chair position on the district board. One of the things I loved about being historian and secretary was that both positions allowed me to use my artistic abilities and be creative, all the while serving others and making a difference. Thus I decided to apply for Marketing Chair. And as an ardent lover and advocate for CKI Brand Guide, I knew marketing was the perfect fit for me. I am honored to have been given the opportunity to make a difference in this organization at the district level. And I’m extremely excited to work with the whole district board and see all of the things we accomplish this service year.
I am extremely excited to work with the rest of the district board (shout out to Karandeep, Jerry, and John), and discover new things about the district and its past. As Winston Churchill once said: the farther backward you can look, the farther forward you can see. I truly believe that learning about and appreciating the history of any organization can help it move forward, and that is why I am honored to serve as the historical committee chair for the 2016-2017 service year.
Oh and also: I do solemnly affirm that I will faithfully execute the position of Marketing Chair, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Brand Guide of Circle K International.
End of the Year Social! By Amy Boglarski On April 17, we celebrated the end of another successful service year and the beginning of a new one with our end of the year social. It was really great to see everyone dressed up and having a fun time reminiscing about past events. Of course, we began the event with some DIY ice cream sundaes, which had delicious ice cream flavors and toppings. What a fantastic way to start the evening! After everyone got settled in and ate their ice cream, we heard the emotional speeches from Immediate Past President and new Southern Tier Lieutenant Governor John Tirino and our new District Governor, Binghamton’s own Jerry Cimo. My personal favorite part of the social came next: the slideshow. Everyone, including myself, loved seeing pictures and videos from past events ranging from pictures of members doing service at events like Boo at the Zoo or Day of Caring to embarrassing videos of Jerry eating watermelon at Relay for Life. Overall, the slideshow really stole the show at the social.
Probably the most exciting portion of the social was the granting of awards. Members received awards for most service hours, best attendance, top first year members, and outstanding displays of fellowship. I was honored to deliver the top committee chair awards, which went to the three committee chairs who went above and beyond their duties this past service year. I’d like to give another shout out to the winners, Christina, Elle, and Paty, along with the rest of the committee chairs who worked so hard this year and improved our club so much! Along with these awards, we also gave out fun awards, like “Most Huggable” and “Dynamic Duo” to members who always let their unique personalities show. The social ended on a high note with the raffling of awesome prize baskets created by e-board members. The baskets were all really creative and used fun themes like superheroes and finals week studying baskets. I’m pretty sure Kora won one of the best baskets of all time including all the supplies needed for a day at the beach. Overall, everyone had an excellent time at the end of the year social by eating ice cream, looking back on past events, winning awards and prizes, and hanging out with great people!
