Hey, Circle K’ers! Our October was chockfull of fun, spookiness, fellowship, and of course, service!

Calendar (page 7)

Throughout October, our members have continued to give back while having fun and getting to know their fellow Circle K’ers at the same time! As always, we would like to thank everyone who has continued to participate in our service events and attend our weekly Monday meetings. Let’s finish off the semester strong!

Check out our spooky events from October…

Trick-or-Canning By: Mary Liberty I participated in Circle K’s Trick-or-Canning event on October 23. A small group of Circle K members went door-to-door in a Vestal neighborhood to ask residents for nonperishable food donations to give to Bear Necessities, our oncampus food pantry. Quite a few people gave us donations and some of them gave us several items. It’s nice to see how giving people can be. I think it’s important to remember that there are always ways to give back to your community, whether it be giving your time to help at events such as these, or giving a canned good from your pantry that you can spare. Every little bit counts. This event was different from events that I usually participate in, in that it let me interact directly with the community outside of Binghamton University. This was certainly an exciting experience. I hope that this event is kept as a tradition and that we get more members to help so that we can go to even more houses next year! I hope that we can do this for other holidays too! 1

Community Meal with VINES By: Anastasia Guerra Volunteering at the Community Meal with VINES definitely opened my eyes to how much making and serving one meal can have an effect on the community. Those who both served and cooked were kind and friendly, and those who came to the church were thankful and polite. That was my first time ever doing something like this, and the feeling I got from helping the community and other volunteers has made me want to do it again. I hope to get more opportunities to help the Binghamton community in the future.

Howloween Out of the Darkness WalkPotter By: Marissa

Autism Speaks Carnival

The Ross Park Zoo in Binghamton hosted Howloween at the zoo for multiple weekends in the month of October, in order to give local kids the chance to visit the zoo with their families, as well as to celebrate Halloween. The event lasted multiple days and was fun for the volunteers, the children and their families. Children were encouraged to wear Halloween costumes. There were games set up throughout the zoo, as well as crafts, and the volunteers were stationed throughout to run the games and crafts. Most of it was geared towards younger children, and they were given a bag upon entrance to the zoo where they could place the tokens they earned while playing the games. The tokens could then be exchanged for prizes on their way out of the zoo. This event was so fun to volunteer at because we got to see all the little kids dressed up in their awesome costumes and see them having fun playing games! It was great to interact with the kids and to help them and their families celebrate Halloween! The kids had so much fun and often came back to play the games again! They were so enthusiastic and I’m glad that I was able to participate in this event that brought some happiness to local children!

CCE Fair By: Lila Fairclough Volunteering at the Community Opportunities Fair was a great way to share all the great things Circle K does with others. The Community Opportunities Fair is an event that the CCE puts on every fall to help students find ways to get involved with volunteering on campus and in the community. Members from Circle K tabled at the event and students were able to get information about the club and ask questions. We were also able to walk around and get a look at different organizations we could work with in the future. The fair took place on October 4th, and I volunteered from 3pm-4pm. Even though I was only able to help out for an hour, I had a lot of fun. It was great seeing all the other opportunities that students can get involved volunteering with, both on and off campus. There were some organizations I had never even heard of, and I thought it was really neat to learn about what they did. I enjoyed telling people about the club, and answering their questions. There were a few people that seemed really interested and wanted to get involved in our club and it was rewarding to be able to help them do that.

Boo at the Zoo By: Isaac Wecht BOO! Did I scare ya!? Didn’t mean to, but I just got back from BOO AT THE ZOO!! Basically, we volunteered at the local Binghamton Zoo for a scary night, full of frights! Every Circle K member, including Emmy Pats and D-dawg Del-Baller, dressed up as goons and goblins, in order to scare community members, who wandered through the dimly light zoo. I was partnered with Emily, and we were given the role of the ZOMBIE PIRATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone said that we had the scariest job, and they were RIGHT! Emily said ‘boo!’ so scarily that a little kid and his grown father began to cry! I was so proud! I can’t wait to do it all again next year! Until next time, BOO!

Fun at Fellowship! By: Liam Carey “Every Circle needs a K,” I thought to myself as I took a deep breath and took my first steps into University Union room 215. Hi, I’m Liam Carey - and early this semester I had the wild ride of not only going to a Circle K meeting for the first time, but running the fellowship too! Now, you might be wondering to yourself: “what the heck is flellowship??” Well, first of all, it’s called fellowship, and I had to learn through fire just what it was as well. Basicallyyyyy fellowship is… Jams. Bools. Goofin around. Buffoonery and merrymaking. Acting like a wizard in front of strangers and shouting “Shazam!” facing down an unknown elf who screams “EEE EEE EEE” and defeats your magic by gnawing your legs off in a battle royale to the death. Good clean fun! That’s right, fellowship is putting on a show for the squad, making up games for the gang to play, doing anything it takes to get people to bond. And I mean anything. Anyway, going back to that fateful first day of Circle K I was stressing - what game do we play? But I don’t remember exactly what we did, all I remember is making some of the best friends of my entire life that day - Henry, Lauren, et cetera! Anyway, the month of October - nothing to scoff at. Cool times, great friends, and better deals from premier food delivery app JoyRun. WELP. Guess my time is up, Ciao for now, Binghamton! Yours truly, Liam C ;)
