Happy New Service Year! Hey, Circle K’ers! I am looking forward to serving as Binghamton Circle K’s Editor for the 2018-2019 service year! On behalf of the entire club, I would like to thank all of our graduating seniors for their dedication and hard work that they put into Circle K. It will be hard to live up to their impact, and we will miss them tremendously! The new E-Board has already begun working to make this upcoming service year the best one yet. While we plan for the future, we should also appreciate what we have completed throughout this past April. We participated in the Out of the Darkness walk, the Autism Speaks Carnival, and Relay for Life! To get the inside scoop, keep flipping through! -Emily Patalano

Hello, New E-Board! Emily Fenter

Lauren Barone

President

Vice President

Emily is our new President for the 2018-2019 service year! She is an incoming senior, and is completing a Mathematics major and an Education minor. She is from Wantagh on Long Island. Emily’s favorite service activity is volunteering at the United Presbyterian Soup Kitchen, and her favorite parts of Circle K are the amazing people that continue to join, as well as everyone’s passion for service. Her advice to new members is: “Don’t be afraid to go to a service activity by yourself because there will be more people there that you can meet and connect with! We all want to meet you and want you grow within Circle K!” When Emily is not working to make our club bigger and better, she enjoys running and photography. When parched from running, you will only see Emily take a swig of water, since that is the only beverage she drinks! That’s a fun fact if I’ve ever heard one! Lastly, Emily’s hero, and inspiration, is her grandma, and the theme song to her life would be, “Best Day of My Life” by American Authors.

Autism Speaks Carnival By: Colleen Flynn

After a relaxing and well-deserved spring break, members of Circle K were reenergized and ready to help the campus! On Saturday, April 21st, Circle K tabled at the Autism Speaks Carnival on the Peace Quad during the late afternoon hours. Engaging numerous associations from acapella groups to fraternities of Binghamton University, there was a universal interest to work with and help members of the special needs community. At this event, individuals of all ages and families from different walks of life throughout the local Binghamton area were able to gather for a day of fun and games.

This being said, at the Circle K station, visitors were greeted with smiles and encouraged to play water pong. A game consisting of throwing or “sinking” table tennis balls into a 10-cup triangle formation, this was a tedious task for all players, mostsdasdl0y impart to the wind. A great opportunity to get to know our opposing teammates, we chatted about everything from the beautiful weather to pizza. A tricky game, water pong, was a useful exercise to hone motor skills and reinforce the importance of patience while waiting for the ball to land in other team’s cup. In hopes of creating a warm and welcoming environment, every person who played was offered stickers after spending a few minutes playing the game. An overall success, the carnival was equally fun for the participants as it was the volunteers.

Relay for Life By: Anne Quirk

This past Friday, April 27th, I had the pleasure of attending Relay for Life in the Events Center on campus. This is an annual event held by the Colleges against Cancer club and sponsored by the American Cancer Society. It runs from 4pm until 4am. Tim and I arrived around 5pm and the event was in full swing. We had a great time walking the track and hanging out with friends, all while raising money to help find a cure for a devastating disease like cancer. The theme of the event was board games, so there was a giant Twister board and a “jail” area like in Monopoly. We stayed for several hours and got to hang out with our Circle K friends at our table where people came to play card games and donate money. Overall, the event was a success! Our club raised over $700 and the event in total raised almost $71,000. I had a great time and wish I wasn’t graduating so I could attend more events with Circle K.

End of the Year Bash By: Danny DelBalzo

On Monday, April 30th, the Cirlce K club celebrated a successful year of service and fellowship with our end of the year party. We celebrated with pizza, games, and conversation. It was truly a good time and provided a much needed relief from finals-stress for many members.

At the end of the party, our attentions were turned to the future of Circle K as we discussed potential projects and opportunities for next semester. We then took a group photo in our brand-new Circle K t-shirts. As the last Circle K meeting ended, every member felt proud of what we accomplished over this past year and excited about what we will accomplish in the future!

The event turned bittersweet as we said goodbye to our seniors during a great yarn-based activity where everyone held onto a single, woven piece, of red yarn and shared what circle K meant to them. At the end of the activity, everyone cut off a piece of the yarn as a sentimental reminder of how Circle K brought us together. Although, I myself am rather new to Circle K, seeing and hearing how Circle K has benefited the lives of so many members made me realize what a great club it is to become a part of. After this activity, the club discussed service activities that we plan to do over the summer since just because Circle K takes the summer off doesn't mean we are going to let helping others 0take the summer off!

Member Spotlight: Melanie Dietrich! Island, and her favorite service activity

is making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. All of the incredible people she has met through our club are what she will miss the most about Circle K!

The member of the month of April is Melanie Dietrich! She was our Editor for the 2017-2018 service year, and she left me with big shoes to fill! On behalf of the entire club, I want to thank her for her awesome newsletters that were concise and informative, and included many motivating quotes to help us through the school year! The club would not have been the same without Melanie and all of her hard work and commitment! I would also like to thank Melanie for being so patient while showing me the ropes when I was the Public Relations Committee Chair, and for helping me with my first newsletter. We will miss her so much next year! For those who don’t know, Melanie is graduating this May with a major in Integrative Neuroscience and a minor in Education. She is from Sayville on Long

Her advice to new members is: “Be yourself, try new things and be the best human you can be.” Melanie is a huge fan of quotes, and like previously stated, she included many of them in her newsletters! So, the quote she lives by is “What you give power to, has power over you, if you allow it.” A fun fact about Melanie is that she paints quotes when she is stressed out about life’s various struggles. Painting quotes helps her learn from her mistakes and the things that challenge her. Additionally, the theme song to her life would be “I Was Here” by Beyoncé. When Melanie is not working hard for Circle K, she enjoys painting, reading, writing, and yoga! When asked about who her hero/inspiration is, Melanie replied, “My favorite English teacher from high school: Mrs. Killeen; she shaped me into the woman I am today. She passed away two years ago and she still has a presence in my life despite not physically being here. She believed in me when I did not believe in myself and she showed me what it’s like to be a phenomenal teacher (which I also want to be one day).” It is awesome how greatly certain people can impact our lives. As a club, let’s make this service year our most influential one yet! We will miss you, Melanie!

Monthly Artwork Digest! Georges Seurat (b. 1859) A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,1886 Oil on canvas This is one of my favorite works of all time. Seurat uses pointillism, a technique using copious amounts of tiny dots, to convey the image. In fact, Seurat developed this technique with the purpose of producing a greater degree of luminosity and brilliance of color. He was inspired to create this piece after visiting the island of La Grande Jatte. The island itself is a mile long and located on the Seine in the Neuilly-sur-Seine department of Paris, which represented a high class getaway for the Parisian community. This piece is currently on display at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Diego Rivera (b. 1886) Cargador de Flores (The Flower Carrier), 1935 Oil and tempera on masonite I love Spanish and Latin American culture; so consequently, I am a huge fan of Diego Rivera’s work. This piece imparts simplicity while also exuding much meaning. The painting displays a peasant man, struggling on all fours, with a dramatically oversized basket of flowers strapped to his back. A woman, most likely the peasant's wife, stands behind him while trying to help with the support of the basket as her husband attempts to rise to his feet. While the flowers in the basket are strikingly beautiful to the viewer, the man does not see their beauty, but only their value as he carries them to the market for sale or exchange. Rivera beautifully depicts the struggles of the working class in a capitalistic world.
