Hey, Bearcats! We hope everyone had an awesome summer filled with fun and service! Now since the school year is starting up, it’s time to get involved in the many amazing opportunities we have planned for this service year! While classes were out, many of our members participated in local service activities, and we appreciate everyone who logged in his/her service hours. Last service year, our club completed a whopping 300 hours of service! We’ll exceed this number this year, right?! We are still looking for three people to fill three Committee Chair positions: Fellowship, District Project and K-Family. If interested, talk to the E-Board! We will also address this in our weekly meetings. To get the inside scoop, keep flipping through!
A Word from the E-Board The E-Board wants to welcome back returning members and welcome all of the new, passionate members who will be joining us this semester! Check out the April Newsletter to learn a little about each E-Board member! We cannot wait to meet you all, and we know this year will be the best one yet. We hope to have a big turnout for DLSSP, the District Large Scale Service Project. DLSSP takes place at Kamp Kiwanis in Taberg, NY, and this year, it will run from September 28th - 30th . Kamp Kiwanis is a summer camp for underprivileged and disabled children who normally would never have a mainstream camp experience. In fact, on August 11th, the 8th annual K-Family Picnic took place in Prospect Park where all proceeds went to Kamp Kiwanis for its 50th Anniversary! From September 28th - 30th, Circle K members from across the district will come together to clean up the camp in preparation for winter! This is a great opportunity to bond with the club and meet a bunch of new people from across the district. Check out the other events we have coming up on both the calendar and the email! The E-Board would also like to give some advice to incoming freshmen and new members! From our experience, the best way to become involved in Circle K is to attend as many meetings and service events as possible! Push yourself out of your comfort zone! So many awesome opportunities and connections come from doing this, and you will definitely make some new friends along the way. Also, encourage your friends to tag along to the events you go to! Who knows, maybe they’ll want to join Circle K with you! If you ever have any questions or concerns, you can always come talk to any of us. ď Š

HorseAbility By: Emily Fenter This summer I spent as much time as I could at HorseAbility. This was my ninth summer volunteering as much time as I could at HorseAbility. HorseAbility's mission is to improve the lives of individuals with special needs through facilitated interactions with horses. They offer a wide range of horse-related programs to the community to promote physical, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual well being of its participants. While I am at HorseAbility, I help both in the barn and in the ring. In the barn, I help I act as a leader. I lead the horse around the ring in order to support the rider and keep control of the horse. Although this summer I didn't get to volunteer as many hours as I have in the past, HorseAbility is a place that has my heart and is somewhere that I always look forward to going to when I am home. Having been there for so many summers, I have been able to see riders grow through the impact of horseback riding. HorseAbility is a place that will always be special to my heart and a place I look forward to volunteering at again for many summers to come!

American Red Cross’s “Sound the Alarm” and Relay for Life By: Logann Dolan My name is Logann Dolan, and I am a Graduate student at Binghamton University pursuing my Master of Business Administration in the School of Management. I have been an active member of Circle K for the past 2 years and have loved every moment of it. This summer, I had an amazing internship at NYCM Insurance as a Brand Management Intern. During my twelve weeks there, I had the privilege of participating in several corporate service events. My very first opportunity was volunteering with the American Red Cross in their “Sound the Alarm” Program. This entailed going door to door in the local community of Edmeston, NY, and educating residents on basic fire safety, checking existing smoke detectors, and installing new ones in their homes. It was a great experience to give back to the community and it felt great knowing we were taking proactive steps to save lives in the future.
Another opportunity I was a part of was the Relay for Life of Chenango County. I represented NYCM Insurance and raised money for the American Cancer Society. The theme of Relay this year was Wizard of Oz. Here is a picture of me dressed as Dorothy for character lap! My summer was filled with so much service and it truly fuels the soul. It’s always important to set aside time in our daily lives to give back. Even the smallest bit of effort can make a difference.

Monthly Artwork Digest! Claude Monet (b. 1840) The Parc Monceau, 1878 Oil on canvas Monet actually painted six views of Parc Monceau: three in 1876 and three in 1878. Parc Monceau is located in Paris, France, and landscapes like these were of particular interest to Monet. You can see his use of two-dimensions through his strong contouring, a technique that defines his most famous work. Monet beautifully emphasizes an ephemeral quality within this 28 5/8 × 21 3/8 in. canvas. Go check out this painting, along with more of Monet’s work, at The MET!
Diego Velázquez (b. 1599) Las Meninas (Ladies-in-waiting), 1656 Oil on canvas Las Meninas has become one of the most widely analyzed works due to its complex composition and network of meanings. The painting depicts a room in the Royal Alcazar of Madrid during the reign of King Philip IV of Spain, and it presents members of the Spanish court. This painting is actually a self-portrait as well; Velázquez portrays himself working at a large canvas. Many tend to focus on the young Infanta Margaret Theresa who is surrounded by her entourage. Many view her integral part as a deeper political meaning. Las Meninas is in display at the Museo del Prado in Madrid. 7
