Meet the Editor Hello everyone! My name is Melanie Dietrich and I’m your new editor for the upcoming service year. I’m very excited to make the newsletters my own this semester, and even though it will be hard to follow our last editor, Kora Sileo’s “punny” newsletters, I’m excited to put my own twist on it. I should probably tell you a bit about myself to get started. I’m currently a junior majoring in Integrative Neuroscience and minoring in education. Last service year I was Public Relations Committee Chair so using the brand guide is something I’m used to by now. The CKI Brand Guide dictates exactly what colors, backgrounds, etc. can be used in Circle K materials. I’m an avid fan of mindfulness and quotes so you all will be seeing plenty of little things here and there that help you be more mindful. I enjoy reading, writing and painting in my free time. A fun fact about me is that I have over 10,000 pins pinned on Pinterest because I love quotes and learning lessons to shape my own thoughts. I love community service because I live by the mantra “be the change you want to see in the world.” By helping those around me whenever I can, I’m making the world a better place. I want to empower those around me and show them how to put their all into whatever they do, and touch the lives of all they run into in the process. I’m excited to work with you all and I’m excited to see all our club accomplishes! Your Editor, Melanie Dietrich 3

Meet the President and Vice President President: Allison Tipaldo

Vice-President: Emily Fenter

Emily is a sophomore majoring in Mathematics and minoring in Education. She loves meeting new people through Circle K and wants to get more people involved and create a closer network between members in the upcoming service year. Her favorite Circle K event is the Community Meal at the United Presbyterian Church. She hopes to encourage individuality and wants the club to come up with new ideas for events that will be planned by our committee chairs. Emily is probably the only person I have ever met that only drinks water with no exceptions whatsoever. She also loves to run and draw. Her favorite quote is “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something” because we can all make the world a better place one thing at a time. It doesn’t matter how small something is, it still can make some sort of a difference in the world.

Allison is a freshman majoring in Integrative Neuroscience and History. She loves having fun and giving back to the community in the process. She hopes to incorporate more service projects into our meetings and bring people closer together as friends. She is looking forward to creating a good dynamic among E-board members. She wants to emphasize service and more fellowship, and have our members look forward to meetings every week. Her favorite quote is “hard work doesn’t guarantee success, but you will never succeed without it.” She believes that hard work is necessary for anything substantial in life. If Allison could have any superpower she would want to be able to read minds because she wants to see things from other people’s perspectives. 4

Meet the Secretary, Treasurer and Webmaster Secretary: Emily Saba Treasurer: Cassie Jiang

Webmaster: Alanna Witowski

not have

Emily is a junior, majoring in Integrative Neuroscience. She loves the sense of community that comes with being a part of Circle K and she wants to help foster that community by encouraging more members to participate in our events. She is also an avid dog lover so hopefully pictures of puppies will be making their way into her minutes. She loves to crochet and knit in her free time. She is also originally from Connecticut which is not a common occurrence at a SUNY school. Her favorite quote is “I may not have gone where I intended to go but I ended up where I needed to be” because she believes that everything happens for a reason.

Cassie is a junior majoring in Financial Economics. She loves volunteering and participating in bake sales and food recovery runs. She is ready to help make the club financially stable, on budget and she wants to be sure that all vouchers and supplement forms are submitted on a timely basis. Her favorite quote is “Loyalty is hard to find. Trust is easy to lose. Actions speak louder than words.” She believes that these are the three things that are essential for any meaningful relationship with another person (whether it’s a friendship or otherwise). Without these, the relationship is broken. 5

Alanna is a junior majoring in English. She loves meeting people who want to get involved in the community. She wants to be even more active in the club than ever before. She’s excited to update the club website. She is also a bit of an adrenaline junkie since skydiving is on her bucket list. If she could have one super power, it would be to time travel so she could go to the past and watch history happen and go to the future so she can actually see a hovercraft. Her favorite quote is “We know what we are, but not what we may be” because we never know what we will achieve in the future, even if it seems impossible now.

Out of Darkness Walk By Gabriella Swete

This past weekend, on April 23rd, the 3rd Annual Out of the Darkness Walk was held on campus. This walk was about suicide prevention and raising awareness for mental health issues. It was an event that I feel made a difference at Binghamton University. Before the walk started, there were speakers who spoke of their experiences relating to their own mental health or the mental health of the people in their lives. Each speaker made an impact on me and there was a strong sense of solidarity between everyone who attended the event. That was my favorite part of the event. Once the walk started, we walked three laps around the Brain on campus together. It was an event that made an impression on me and I am glad I participated!

Passion For Action By Jerry Cimo

Circle K was proud to help sponsor the Passion to Action forum: Waste Culture on Campus event put on by the CCE. Various questions were raised and discussed such as: “how does society develop an unsustainable culture of waste?” As well as “in what ways can we combat this on campus and in our local communities?” A panel of waste management, recycling, and environmental policy experts addressed concerns surrounding waste culture in society and at Binghamton University. We learned about the campus initiatives we should partake in to reduce waste and work towards long-term sustainability efforts such as the CIW food recovery program, which our club is involved with. Overall, the panel was very insightful and I learned about of things about waste in our community, and how our everyday actions are impacting our planet. The panelists were very insightful and knew a lot of about waste management and culture on our campus and in the Vestal and Binghamton area. I'm glad to have been a part of it!

Backpack Repack Program By Oluponle Iluyomade The Backpack Repack Event with The Food Bank of the Southern Tier is an event where men and women of all ages come to put together bags of food that will be delivered to children who are in need. This was my second time participating in the event (since 2015 actually) and I had a blast just like the last time I participated. I went with Courtney Aronica and Anne Quirk and we all had different jobs. Courtney and Anne were in charge of putting the foods into the bags while I was the one putting the prepped bags into large boxes and setting them aside so the boxes could be picked up later. The steps weren’t hard but it was pretty mundane and tiring. So we eventually got overwhelmed. At two different points, they had to halt the bag line to allow myself and Alan Kline to take apart some more boxes so that we could assort the bags with food into them. It was fun nonetheless and we were there for a good cause so I didn’t mind how hectic things got. All in all, I wish I got to participate in this event more often, with or without the other Circle K members, as I was able to interact with many interesting individuals. For instance, there was one guy who was filled with energy and who seemed like he was ready to do all of the packing by himself.

Relay For Life By Emily Fenter This year I attended my second Relay For Life. At the event a section was set up where people attending the event could sit down with their club/friends. Surrounding this area was a track set up where attendees could walk laps to show their support. There was always at least one person walking to show the continuous support for cancer research. Also, at the event there were many different tables that were set up from different organizations with activities that would raise additional funds for the American Cancer Society. Furthermore, next to these tables there were bounce houses and live entertainment. I relay for all the people that are affected by cancer. Cancer effects so many people and the funds raised at events like Relay for Life go to a great cause that can help people and families going through hard times due to cancer. I believe this event should continue to be run in the future and should have a goal to reach further into the community and reach out to more people on campus. This event should incorporate a large portion of campus because cancer touches the lives of so many people. I would like to encourage more of our members to attend in the future and spread the word to their friends about the event. I will certainly continue my support for Relay For Life as long as I am a student here at Binghamton.

Walk To End Alzheimer’s By Allison Tipaldo

On Saturday April 29th, I attended the Walk to End Alzheimer's. It was so much fun! It started off with an opening ceremony in the West Gym where we were given flowers that represented our relationship to the disease. For example, people who had Alzheimer's were given a blue flower and people who were caretakers for those with Alzheimer's took a yellow flower. We then heard the stories of different people and their relationship to the disease. Afterwards, we took a lap around the extended Brain and got to go by the nature preserve. If you saw a whole bunch of people in purple shirts, that was us! This event was awesome, and I hope to see you there next year!

Member Spotlight: Kora Sileo Kora is a junior majoring in Integrative Neuroscience and she is also minoring in Spanish and Education. She loves helping the community and hopes that the club will be more active in the Binghamton Community in this service year. She loves baking, cooking, watching movies, exercising, adventuring, traveling, exploring nature, hiking and coloring. So to say the least you will probably find her making food of some sort or outside seeing all the world has to offer. Kora absolutely loves Forrest Gump, and her favorite quote also comes from it: “Mama always said, life was like a box of chocolates.” For those of you who have yet to see this award winning film, the premise behind that quote is that we never know what we’re going to get in life. One thing you all probably don’t know is that Kora does have a side most of us would not anticipate, for if she had a superpower, she would have invisibility so she could go around pranking people. Oh and her favorite animal for those of you who don’t know her is a hedgehog and puns are kind of her thing so here is a picture of a hedgehog and a pun that I’m sure you will enjoy (I know she will enjoy it at the very least). 12
