Welcome Back Bearcats! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer! It’s hard to believe that the summer is coming to a close, and we are all getting ready to get back into the swing of classes and homework. While classes were out, members from our club continued to actively participate in service in their local communities, as well as with many members from other clubs! From the International Convention, in which many of our members that are on the district board represented Binghamton, to the K Family Picnic, our club had a very active summer. I wish everyone an awesome semester, and let’s continue that streak of service throughout the upcoming school year!

CKIx 2015 By Tina Lee

‌gaining leadership skills, make new friendships, build community, and, of course, come together to serve others. This past summer the New York District Board set off to Indianapolis to spend a week gaining leadership skills, make new friendships, build community, and, of course, come together to serve others. This year's CKIx was extra special because we were able to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis with Kiwanians, Circle K members, and Key Clubbers. One of the best parts was seeing Sue Petrisin, the first woman to be elected to serve as the president of Kiwanis International. She was such an inspiration and it was an honor to hear her speak about her passion for our organization! Kathy Le, the immediate past president of Circle K International, and Maria Palazzolo, the immediate past president of Key Club International, were also present, and they pumped up the crowds as we celebrated the successes of the Kiwanis family. Aside from the general sessions, we all spent a good amount of our time participating in fun activities. We got to watch a baseball game, party with Hellogoodbye, and enjoy the 100th anniversary festivities in downtown Indy! Out

of all the events, however, the best part was this year's service By projects. I had the wonderful Tina Lee opportunity of spending the day with a group of local children at the Hawthorne Community Center. We went to a nearby playground, ate some snacks, had story time and played with each other all day long! Other volunteers painted playgrounds, painted murals, and helped beautify the local town. On another day, we all came together to volunteer at the Gleaner's food bank. My group got to organize food in the freezers. We were given super big winter jackets, which looked kind of silly on us since we were all pretty much wearing shorts and tanks during the summertime. Regardless of how funky we looked, we had a blast sorting all types of food into different fixtures. Overall, CKIx was such an amazing experience thanks to everyone in the K-Family who made this year's convention happen. I am thrilled and excited to spend this service year sharing all the things I learned from CKIx, and hope that everyone will have an opportunity to attend an international convention in the near future.

We have chosen Michael Seth Owitz as the Binghamton Circle K's member of the month for August. His dedication and hard work during the preparations for U-Fest really impressed the eboard. The event couldn't have been successful without his help. Also, he's an amazing (amazing!) baker. I’m not actually a member of Circle K. -Seth Owitz 2015

New York District’s Annual Kiwanis Family Picnic By Amy Boglarski On August 8, 2015, I embarked on an incredible journey across multiple states, through various modes of transportation, all leading up to the New York District’s Annual Kiwanis Family Picnic! This year’s picnic took place in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens. The park was swarming with people and activities, while providing a picturesque view of the river, making it the perfect location for the K-Family Picnic. The picnic was an event for all members of the Kiwanis Family, including Key Clubbers and Kiwanians, providing all members with the opportunity to see new faces they would not get to meet at our NYCKI district events. It was also a great way to see old faces such as Binghamton Circle K’s Immediate Past Editor and the current District Editor, Alyssa Famolari. As expected, the K-Family Picnic held some awesome fellowship events including a three-legged race, an egg and spoon race, and even a chubby bunny challenge! Participating in all of these fellowship events gave attendees the opportunity to donate to charities.

The team that participated in the most games got to choose a Kiwanis Foundation charity to receive the

money made from admission to the picnic. The highlight of the KFamily Picnic, however, was the Pie the Board Auction! In this auction, picnic attendees bid for the opportunity to assault board members with a pie to the face. Some of the pie victims were our Southern Tier Lieutenant Governor and Binghamton Circle K’s Immediate Past Secretary Tina Lee, District Secretary and BUCKI Immediate Past President Jerry Cimo, and of course, Governor Walaa Ahmed. The auction raised a lot of money for the Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation, while at the same time gave everyone in attendance an exciting and hilarious display! The entire K-Family Picnic was a success for everyone in attendance and everyone who benefitted from the charitable donations. Shout-out to the NYCKI District Board member for hosting, especially Governor Walaa and Alumni and Kiwanis Family Relations Chair Jeffrey Cheng!

Event Spotlight Strike Out Lyme Disease This summer I decided to hold a bowling fundraiser for the Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation (KPLD) in my home town of East Greenbush, NY. People came from all over the capital region for 2 hours of unlimited bowling and positive vibes, including fellow Binghamton CKI member, Devin Jensen. With help from my local East Greenbush Kiwanis club, we gathered over 30 Circle K'ers, Kiwanians, Key Clubbers, friends and family in attendance and raised $338 for KPLD

from tickets and our #casual 50/50. KPLD raises money for families in New York State to help pay for the treatment of children suffering from Lyme Disease. I currently serve as a member of the KPLD Service Leadership Program committee, and help promote the foundation within New York State.
