Welcome back, Bearcats! After a great summer of service by our dedicated club members, it is definitely time to get back into the swing of things. Our members completed a total of over 200 hours of service in just our three short months away from Binghamton. Let’s continue off of this great start and bring in the highest number of service hours that Binghamton Circle K has ever seen!
Sandwiches for the Homeless By Tina Lee Over this past summer, the Liberty, Empire and Long Island Divisions came together to host their very first Downstate Regional Training Conference. The day-long event featured workshops, guest speakers, games, and my personal favorite, an in-house service project. The service project was making peanut butter and jelly and Nutella sandwiches to donate to a local food bank in Manhattan. This project was especially significant because it kicked off our participation in this year’s district project, “Hope 4 the Homeless”. Our district project focuses on providing resources to those who are in need, including basic necessities such as food, water, and shelter, in efforts to help end homelessness in our communities. The great part about focusing on homelessness in our organization is that we’re investing our time and energy into something that truly affects every community our Circle K members reside in, and that goes beyond Binghamton. It’s also so simple to do something about it and make a difference in people’s lives. Making a couple sandwiches, volunteering at a soup kitchen, or even just donating items like clothing or hygiene products can make a huge impact on the well-being of an individual and even an entire community. Take a moment today to think about all the wonderful privileges you have, such as having food on your plate, sleeping in your own bed, or brushing your teeth in the morning. There are so many things we do and things that we have that we might take for granted, which is why I think our district project not only allows us to help others, but also helps us put things into perspective and really go through a humbling experience. Keep an eye out for more opportunities that you and your club can partake in to alleviate homelessness issues in your local community, and together we can truly make a difference!
Event Highlight‌ Kiwanis Family Picnic! by Paty Acipreste On July 10th our local Kiwanis family came together for a Summer Picnic at Eisenhower park. There were about 70 people that attended the event and with their help we raised over 500 dollars towards Lyme disease with the Lyme Challenge, in which people donated money to take a bite out of a lime. This resulted in many funny faces as well as memorable pictures but most importantly we came together for a greater cause. As K-Family Relations Committee Chair, I got in touch with some of the Kiwanis Family on Long Island and with
the help of many people, especially Jeanne Egan, the Lt. Gov. of the LI North division, we were able to organize an event to help those with Lyme disease as well as create a time where people got to see each other again! The New York District Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation supports and advocates for child victims of Lyme disease. Many Circle K members from other schools came to support the cause; this lead to new friendships and ideas. It was so much fun, thank you for all of those that came out to support a wonderful cause!
‌CKIx‌ by John Tirino This summer, Circle K International held its International Convention in Toronto, in celebration of the 100-year anniversary of Canada Kiwanis. Every year, the International Convention acts as a closing of the previous service year, and the beginning of a brand new one. Throughout the week of the convention, members of Circle K from around the world were able to participate in service projects around the Toronto area, obtain knowledge of the operations of Circle K through various workshops, and vote for the new leaders of Circle K International. While very professional, the convention was also full of fun experiences and new friends. I met many new people from different parts of the country and the world who were just as passionate about service as I am. Additionally, because International Convention was nearly a week long, there was a lot of time we were able to utilize to explore Toronto and the different sights it had to offer. For me personally, it was my first time outside of the United States, so I was excited to take the chance to explore a new city in a new country. All in all, I greatly enjoyed my first International Convention, and it is an experience that I would recommend to all Circle K members because of the great friends and connections that you make through the entire week.
…And the Member of the Season is…
KESTER FRANCIS! He’s the Franciest member around!
Kester was chosen as the member of the season because of all of the volunteer work he did this summer! Kester completed a whopping 45 hours in just the three months off. Kester volunteered in the emergency room in Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Center, Long Island. Great Job Kester! We are excited to see all that you accomplish as fellowship chair this year!

KIWANIS CONVENTION By Jerry Cimo This past August, I had the privilege of attending Kiwanis District Convention in Buffalo, NY. While at the convention, I represented the New York District of Circle K to our sponsoring Kiwanis district, gave an address to all of the attendees on the status of our Circle K district, and encouraged Kiwanians to get more involved with our organization. Additionally, I hosted a forum where we discussed some general information on Circle K, and got Kiwanians excited to get more involved with our clubs. Additionally, I met with our current outgoing Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor that oversees the Kiwanis division that includes Binghamton Circle K and discussed the status of our club in addition to some local Kiwanis clubs in our area, and brainstormed ways we can collaborate in the future. While at the convention in Buffalo, I also had the chance to speak with the Key Club and Kiwanis Governors and ways we can work together as sister organizations, and help each other’s’ needs. The next Kiwanis Convention I will be attending is the Kiwanis Family Weekend in mid-November in Callicoon, NY.
