A Warm, Wintery Welcome!

Welcome back to Binghamton, everyone! After a much-needed, rejuvenating winter break, we have started off the semester on a high note. From Willow Point volunteering, to baking with Challah for Hunger, and everything in between, we have already done some great service this year. Let’s keep up the great work!

Challah for Hunger By Paty Acipreste As members of Circle K, we try to reach out to other clubs and collaborate on projects. Last week we helped at the Challah for Hunger! Challah for Hunger brings people together to bake and sell challah, a traditional type of Jewish bread, to raise money and awareness for social justice. They make a difference in the world by investing in the next generation of entrepreneurs, social activists, and philanthropists. Something that is very important to college students. Although I can't really bake, the other groups taught me exactly how to roll the dough and form the challah. The preparation and baking took 2 days and on the third day they sold it at the Hillel office. Millions of college students today are experiencing hunger and food insecurity. It was a great way for Circle K to give back to the community and help out those in need. It was a great experience and I can't wait to participate again next time!

Southern Tier Divisional By John Tirino With one month left in the service year, this is a good time to reflect on all the outstanding service, leadership, and fellowship that not only our club accomplished, but our division, and our district. As Lieutenant Governor, I cannot express how proud I am of all of the clubs in the Southern Tier for the work that you all have done, and this past weekend we celebrated our accomplishments at our February Divisional Meeting. Cornell, Ithaca, and Binghamton were all in attendance to commemorate this year, and elect our new Lieutenant Governor for the 2017-2018 service year. I am proud to say that Nikita Lee from Cornell University was unanimously elected to serve as Southern Tier Lieutenant Governor for the upcoming year. I am excited to see what she has planned for the division, and I am positive that she will go above and beyond what is expected of her as LTG. Along with the election, we reflected on the outstanding service that the Southern Tier division performed, including 1654.90 total service hours, and $5365.16 fundraised through the month of January. We have also seen tremendous growth in membership across the division. Finally, we discussed District Convention, where we will have about 20 members representing the Southern Tier. DCON is the final district event of the service year, and it acts as a culmination of the year where we are able to look back and reflect, but at the same time elect new district officers and maintain a positive outlook on the future of New York Circle K. I am excited to see what this last month of the year has in store for Binghamton, the Southern Tier, and New York Circle K as a whole, and it has been my honor to serve as your Lieutenant Governor.

Event Highlight‌

Tree Lighting! By Emily Fenter In December I attended the Conklin Kiwanis chapters Tree lighting event. I really enjoyed this event! It was nice to be able to get off campus and interact with other people who also care about Kiwanis and help them celebrate the holiday season! We helped hand out sheet music and mostly socialized with those who attended. We all sang carols and watched the tree and menorah be lit up! Then there was a surprise visit from Santa. It was adorable seeing all the kids run over and get in line to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas. After the singing, watching the lights, and surprise visit from Santa I was able to talk to some of the people who attended who live in the surrounding area and are a part of Kiwanis. They loved having a couple of college students come out to help spread holiday cheer and those of us who attended definitely enjoyed it too! I definitely want to get involved in more events with the local Kiwanis chapters!

Cann-ecting with Canned Goods By Tim Leung A few weeks ago, I had the privilege to participate in a canned goods collection with my fellow members, where all proceeds were donated to the Binghamton Salvation Army. I, along with three other people, went to the neighborhood behind Target on Vestal Parkway and went door-to-door asking people to donate any non-perishables or canned goods they had. While the temperatures were frigid and the sun had pretty much set, we had a great time because we did it together. Some people were even kind enough to let us into their homes temporarily as they gathered their donations so that we could be warm. One moment that was extremely rewarding and memorable was one lady that said to us, "We take it for granted, we go to bed with full stomachs but not everyone does, so it is great you guys are doing this." Hearing those words made the entire experience worthwhile, and it felt great to be giving back in such a simple yet effective way. v

Soup Kitchen By Lila Fairclough I was very glad to have gotten the opportunity to volunteer at the soup kitchen. It was my first time ever volunteering at a soup kitchen, even though I had some experience with volunteering at other dinners that had a similar setup. When we first got there, the other volunteers who worked every week were already hard at work preparing for the meal. We were welcome help and our first task was to cut the rolls that they would be having with the meal and put them into baskets. One of the older volunteers helped us to figure out how many to put in the different baskets, and then we placed these on the table. After the tables were all set, we prepared to serve the meal. The meal for the day I volunteered, which was the Saturday meal, was chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans. I remember how happy the people were when we passed out the food. They were all very friendly and polite. After their meal, we passed out ice cream bars for dessert. After everyone was finished eating, we cleaned up the tables and put away all of the chairs. Overall, I think it was a great experience. Not only was it rewarding helping out the local community members, but it was a great way to get out into the community and hear some of their stories. It was a very fun and rewarding experience that I would definitely want to do again in the future.

February Bake Sale By Cassie Jiang

Since it was American Heart last month, Circle K international had a bake sale on Wednesday February 1st to raise public and medical awareness of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. We sold cupcakes, cakepops, oreo truffles, and red velvet cookies with cream cheese filling. We raised a total of $74.50 from the bake sale. All proceeds went to the American Heart Association. We’ll do whatever we can to help this non-profit organization in reducing disability and deaths caused by these diseases.

Willow Point By Jess Siegal On Sunday afternoon, February 18th, the Willow Point Nursing Home in Vestal held a Wine and Cheese party for its residents. The event, including preparation by volunteers, lasted about an hour and a half. The nursing home holds this event twice a year and always welcomes volunteers to help out. Along with two volunteers from Circle K, several high school students and younger kids were there to volunteer as well. The Willow Point residents were treated to cheese and cracker plates with wine, along with soda and pizza. The volunteers prepared the drinks and food plates, and along with the nursing home staff helped to serve the food to the residents. A young cello player was also there to provide entertainment. The residents appeared to enjoy themselves, and the staff appreciated all the help the volunteers provided.

Member Highlight‌ Ponle! Full Name: Oluponle Iluyomade Major: Biological Sciences (B.A.) Hometown: Queens, NY Fun Fact: I have a large birthmark on the right side of my neck. Favorite Circle K Memory: Favorite moment would be participating in the Hinman Sleepout last semester. Goals for the year: To get a 4.0 GPA, get into some sort of masters or post-baccalaureate program by the end of this semester, and put on more service projects and activities than last semester. Why I love Circle K: I love Circle K because the club has allowed me to grow as a leader and has allowed me to help others while doing so. As an introverted individual, my past two positions has given me the opportunity to work in the background and make a difference in many people's lives and I couldn't be happier.

Ponle was chosen as the member of the winter season because of his excellent work combatting homelessness and raising awareness about poverty in his role as the district project committee chair. He has helped to organize soup kitchen visits, food recovery runs, and events with the Rescue Mission. Great work, Ponle!
