"Pain is unavoidable, but suffering is optional." Buddha
W
e all learn, rather sooner than later, that a certain amount of pain is inherent to living. Modern society has made us weak in many ways: Comfort softens and vital erroneous approaches numb the clearness that the natural way naturally awakens. The possibility to perceive pain is directly proportional to the degree of sensitivity. The consolation here is that so is the capacity to feel pleasure. If virtue is in the center, both, pain and pleasure, inhabit in the ends, so one and the other, opposite and complementary, sway in similar degrees in our vital oscilloscope according to our natures. Not all humans possess the same degree of sensitivity, which, on the other hand and like almost everything, can be developed. Physically, pain is a threshold of molecular acceleration and it never proceeds if it there isn't a certain degree of pressure. I believe that this is a magnificent definition of pain, because it focuses its causes in a level of understanding completely different than usual. Its precursor, José María Sánchez Barrio, a genius in my opinion, gave new light on an issue that, hackneyed and uncomfortable, has been addressed in medicine (even in psychiatry!) exclusively with nervous suppressors. Any kind of physical pain requires of these three components: pressure, consequent acceleration and, ultimately, inflammation. The etymology of inflammation, from Latin "inflammatio" (lit, set fire), clearly defines the consequences of pressure processes. You just have to put a finger on the skin and keep pressing to understand that is just a matter of passing a threshold. At the end, the area is hot, because any pressure, in sufficient dose or frequency, ends up accelerating molecules which rub more and more among themselves, get heated and inflame the tissues, which in turn compress the nerve terminals as they expand. So we see that pain is related with cold and heat; hence the tremendous effectiveness of therapies linked to thermoregulation of my old Master Sánchez Barrios. Pain is a warning threshold - Not that way! -, a defense mechanism by which animals defend themselves in harsh situations and environments. It's not a divine curse; it's a valuable evolutionary protection. Non-motile living beings don't require that level of sensitivity, so plants don't possess a high degree of perception of the environment. Sensitivity is thus an evolutionary achievement and, as such, is directly proportional to the time of appearance of each species on the planet. A lizard can't feel (in form or
"He who knows about pain, knows everything" Dante Alighieri
intensity) like a bull, or a bull like a human. The support that evolution developed for such purpose has been growing more and more in size and complexity in the evolutionary scale and is called nervous system, crowned with that great interpreter of signals is the brain. We can’t explore consciousness or the mystery of perception without studying and examining in depth the physiological foundations of this biological mechanism, clearly essential, if we want to start off this search with a sound knowledge basis. Since there is a continuous correlation among body, emotion, mind and spirit, is not negligible to illuminate the possible consequences of this discovery about the origins of pain, by considering the "other" pains that afflict humans. The laws of excess and defect know no borders, and pain, sometimes turned into suffering, positions itself as a point of maximum interest on the scale of personal and collective values. This is a key subject, and everyone who has had a toothache will know what I mean, but also anyone who has suffered from lovesickness, the tearing a loss, or the affliction of misfortune. Not surprisingly, the representation of hell in the most varied cultures is that of a kiln, an imprisonment, or its opposite ends, because there are also icy hells. The world in general, if only to place ourselves in spacetime, is undergoing a heating process, an acceleration process, and finally a process of increasing pressure. We humans constantly use these terms and concepts in our daily life because everything is a product of the environment and because we are all inserted in the same bubble. Increasing pressure, lack of time, acceleration, are all signs easily recognizable, and their results can't be others than those described above, touching inevitably all the planes of the fact of being human. The most sensitive (including me), subject to this set of overstimulation, will necessarily be the first ones to jump, and we will try to understand so as to adapt ourselves as soon as possible in front of that reality. The price however is always high, and the scars are inevitable. Nobody volunteers for the way of consciousness; nobody wakes to the subtle world of spirituality on his own initiative. Evolutionary pressure: Onward, upward, inward, toward the Whole, transcends the physical levels. The environment today doesn't leave many options and accelerates at full steam the processes of individual and collective transformation. Pain can't be excluded from that process and treat it with physical or consciousness numbing medication is a monumental and regrettable

mistake. Killing the messenger is not the answer to the environment pressure; it's just an exceptional resource that shouldn't be abused, because this also has implications in a world where things occur piled and at full speed and further attention is required. On the other hand, the symptoms of this extreme moment are unequivocal and overstimulation of all forms of information end up numbing naturally the receptors, which "disconnect" themselves or plunge individuals into that direction, either by the old means (alcohol, marijuana, mushrooms ...) or the new ones (psychotropics, chemical drugs, etc ...), the result is alike... Saturation and the annulment process of consciousness includes the most varied effects (old dogs with new names), that grow exponentially. Alzheimer's and Autism are two examples that involve similar correspondences in the plane of the consciousness of the Being. The result is dreadful and the battlefield of mankind is strewn with corpses in this battle. Even worse, many of the fallen are precisely those of whom we most need guidance, because they already came exceptionally gifted of an extreme sensitivity; they form the first line of defense for all of us and that's why casualties in that post are the highest. Pain is a substantial part of life, but suffering is not; suffering is always optional because we can act on it, either by depriving it from its sources of supply (pressure, acceleration, inflammation) or deriving the excess information that accompanies it. Running away doesn't override the mechanisms that produce pain, quite the opposite, strengthens it. As an incentive and natural defense stays unmatched but there's no need to look for it, because is certain to come by itself. Hiding... there's no place where it can't reach; understanding its role is to start disabling it, accepting its existence is to accept the rules of the https://www.facebook.com/alfredo.tucci.5 game.
Some old rare footadge; meeting of fights of the Dog Brothers in November 1997.
Woof: In the real world, our Rules of Engagement (ROE) and our environmental awareness usually are more important than our physical fighting skills. Some of us have clearly worked out our ROE already. This is good. Having a sense of what one is and is not willing to fight for is an essential ingredient of not getting started in matters for which one is not willing to fight. He who has not really thought about it may find himself having to work things out on the fly while under duress-- not good!!!
or example, someone barks and instinctively he barks back as a matter of self-respect and/or the respect of onlookers. Sometimes all is well-- the situation subsides. But sometimes, the situation escalates and a terrible problem arises-- in this moment he must determine whether to fight. If not, then he may fear installing a backdown from an adrenal escalation into his self-programming. He may fear that this is very bad for future response to adrenal dumps. He may fear looking or feeling like a coward. As a result he may decide to fight-- that is to say he agrees to fight for ‌ for what? Certainly not for anything which he would have fought if he had already worked out his thinking! For me, and your mileage may vary, a fundamental principle is "What you think of me is none of my business". Of course there may be variations, but on the whole if someone barks at me it is very simple: according to the physical realities
F
Dog Brothers of the situation I can leave or respond with verbal judo/de-escalation techniques. If these fail, then I can be clear both to myself and to any witnesses that may be present that I sought to avoid the fight and now must act. This makes for an unencumbered mind and a superior level of action-- and better testimony should it ever come to that. My next rule of engagement is to "Avoid the Three Ss". That is to say, avoid Stupid people in Stupid places doing Stupid things. Putting these three rules together (Environmental awareness; What you think of me is none of my business;
and Avoid the Three Ss) will prevent most problems before they even get started. Still, the flying fickle finger of fate can reach out and tap us withdifficult situations. Certainly environmental awareness includes being aware of what is going on in your physical awareness. Certainly you should have skills for "Managing Unknown Contacts" See for example the "Practical Unarmed Combat" DVD in our catalog for some outstanding material by undercover LEO, highly regarded LEO trainer and my friend "Southnark"-- but today I want to talk about a particular aspect
of environmental awareness which is off most people's radar screens -- the legal jungle in which we find ourselves. As my criminal law professor in law school said to me "We don't have a justice system. We have a legal system." Be very clear that its rules and values may be very different from your sense of Natural Law!!! You need to be very, very clear that witty heuristics to be found on internet forums may have little or no basis in fact for where you may be when the excrement hits the fan. Furthermore, worth noting is that few of us find ourselves in only one legal jurisdiction over time or even at the
“Learn the law of where you live, work, study, and play. Have it on your shelf for reference before you travel. This too is part of walking as a warrior for all your days.
same time-- within America think municipal, state, and federal all covering you in one place at one time and that as you move around you find yourself under the different laws of the various states. Indeed, we have fifty different sets of state law and there can be substantial differences amongst them. THIS DIVERSITY IS A GOOD THING. In the wisdom of our Founding Fathers (divinely inspired in my humble opinion) our federal system is a laboratory of freedom so that we can try different approaches and move away from ones that do not suit us to ones that do suit us.
REGARDLESS, BE CLEAR THAT THE LAW OF WHERE YOU ARE AT A GIVEN MOMENT ALSO NEEDS TO BE PART OF YOUR ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS. If you are to walk as a warrior for all your days you should know how you are and aren't you allowed to be armed; if you are required to retreat and if so, under what circumstances; what the rules are concerning the coming to the aid of another; when may you use deadly force; what is considered deadly force; what you can and can't do to fleeing felons, what the criminal consequences possible are
for your actions, as well as other things. Typically the reality of it is that we DO NOT really know the answers to these questions. I know I don't, at least not to my satisfaction! We may have read the heuristics of some seemingly knowing poster on a forum, but is that really going to give us a clear and systematic sense of what the law of the legal jungle in which we operate may be? Not when the adrenaline is flowing! The district attorney is not going to care what we say we read on the internet, nor is our lawyer as we pay his fee or the judge and jury as they decide our fate.
So, what to do if we do want to be aware of our legal environment? Funny you should ask ;-) As some of you may know, a long, long time ago in a universe far, far away for one year (1982) I was an attorney in Washington DC where I did first year associate drone work for a law firm that had absolutely nothing to do with criminal law-- so my formal connection with law in general and criminal law in particular, is essentially that of a semi-educated layman. Of course, the effects of that education and experience linger and given my current line of work it is only natural that I have been paying attention to these self-defense legal and criminal law issues along the way. It is from that perspective that I say that I have found what I am going to use in my own life from here forward. It is a book called "Self-Defense Laws of All 50 States" by Attorney Mitch Vilos and Evan Vilos. In my opinion, this book is simply outstanding. As the attorney that I am (technically speaking I still am one, albeit "inactive status" for the last 29 years) I appreciate the thorough nature of the work that has gone into this book. The citations of legal authority readily enable well targeted additional research, should, God forbid, such become necessary. The quality of the citations also give me confidence in the quality and level of research that has gone into this book. Although the statutes and citations are present, the deeper worth of the book can be found in the simple yet suitably nuanced examples that effectively communicate to real people wanting a practical sense of the laws and rules appreciate. This is much more than "here's the statute and a simple explanation that is so vague as to be useless". For example, in my home state of California simply reading the statute would give the impression that I was in 19th century Texas, but with commendable thoroughness the authors go beyond the statute itself to
explain how the real standards applied to your behavior are to be found in the jury instructions. In other words, as part of doing the work they realized that Califor nia required something more and different for the reader to get a good sense of the true reality. In all states various sample stories are given to illustrate the laws and questions presented; my sense of things is that without compromise in quality of analysis, the material is readily understood by real people. I would add that in contrast to other articles and books I have seen wherein the author is rather prissy, these authors seem to me to be quite comfortable with the idea that some good people have guns and knives and that there are situations where that is a good thing. After a few broad overview chapters, each chapter is dedicated to a particular state and answers the same matrix of questions: Defense of Self and Others Non-Deadly Force Deadly Force Use of Deadly Force to Prevent Serious Felonies Defense of Third Persons Exceptions to Justifiable SelfDefense Initial Aggressors Provocation Committing Felony or Unlawful Act Mutual Combat Exceptions to the Exceptions Withdraw and communicate Duty or No Duty to Retreat-Generally Defense of Person(s) in Special Places (home, business, occupied vehicle) Duty or No Duty to retreat from Special Places Co-habitants, co-employees- duty to retreat Presumption of reasonableness in public places Responsibility to Innocent Third Parties
Civil Liability Defense of Property Helpful Definitions Relating to Self-Defense Statutes Topics not explained in statutes of cases Thus no matter the state, the matrix is the same. This is very valuable--our knowledge instead of being random, now becomes systematic! If I am going on a trip to a certain state, all I need to do is read that chapter and I will be informed as to the laws of the legal jungle in which I will be! Furthermore simply reading the material is a good exercise in clarifying your own thinking and thinking about things that may not have otherwise occurred to you. As you may have noticed, we do not clutter our catalog with lots of items. If something is there, it is there for a reason. I was so impressed with this book that I called up author Mitch Vilos and told him about who we are and how we look to help people walk as warriors for all their days. I am delighted to report that we now offer it in our catalog for $30. I know $30 can seem like a lot of money for one book, but I would point out that this book is, in considerable measure, a labor of passion by two men who want you to know your rights and to avoid the abundant pitfalls faced by those of us who look to take responsibility for the defense of ourselves, our family, and the innocent. As you can imagine, the work going into getting all 50 States in one coherent, well-organized, well-told book is considerable and the volume of sales is such that the price is what it is--which in my opinion is quite a bargain in terms of what is delivered. Buy it. Learn the law of where you live, work, study, and play. Have it on your shelf for reference before you travel. This too is part of walking as a warrior for all your days. “TAOWS Academy. Wing Tsun Advanced”. Sifu Salvador Sánchez Wing Tsun is an excellent style of Chinese boxing that permits a lifetime training experience and an integral development of the individual. Its ideas, techniques, philosophy etc , it all belongs to an ancient art and must be studied and understood in its whole. Sifu Salvador Sánchez focusses his second dvd on the wooden dummy and how it influences all of the Wing Tsun practice. Given that the wooden dummy form is taught at the final levels of the actual system of today, most practitioners that leave the system before time don't have the opportunity to know the ideas and concepts hidden within the form, and they cannot incorporate them in their practice. For TAOWS academy it is very important that the practitioner understands what he is doing always and in every aspect, and for this, in this dvd we are going to follow the same outline that we follow in our classes, seminars and training sessions. Our outline follows six steps, the first one is to develop an idea, what we want to achieve. The second part are the forms, Siu Nim Tao, Chum Kiu, Biu Jee, the wooden dummy form, depending on each s level, the third part is footwork, mobility understood. The fourth pillar is Chi Sao, Chi Gerk, stickiness, the soul of the system. The fifth element is non stickiness and no contact, to know what to do in order to reach contact with the opponent in a safe way.

FU-SHIH KENPO Women in Martial arts One only needs to read the headlines of the different media (television, newspapers, magazines, internet) to realize about the ongoing violence and risks surrounding our existence in our society, modern but generally unable to procure security and harmony among our fellow human beings. It is for this reason that Gyms, Clubs or Martial Arts schools are achieving the highest number of supporters, fans, experts and pr ofessionals than any other sport in the world, and also because of the various organizations that today exist in relation to "Mistreatment or Gender -based violence" in the family or social environment.
Fu-Shi Kenpo
M
istreatment or domestic violence in the family is any natural or p s y c h o l o g i c a l aggression carried out on persons in the household or domestic environment of the perpetrator, with the requirement of living "under one roof". The basic difference with the crime of gender-based violence lies with the authorship of the offense, because in this case is no longer a strictly male-female aggression, since any member of the family or living environment can be the aggressor and / or the victim. Gender violence is any act of physical or psychological aggression against a woman, whether she's the perpetrator's partner, his former partner or a especially vulnerable person who lives with him. Well, in this case, the range of victims is quite open, since the doer will not only be the man, but also the woman, and the victim will not only be the aforementioned person, but many other. The arts of the Far East, as well as the modern systems of wester n creation, have never been considered by society as elite sports that attract crowds and have a strong repercussion in the media and the bussiness world. But it doesn't mean that the statistics are clearly showing that they are the most complete sport second to none. There is no question about that, if we consider that no other modality strives to achieve and develop so many physical, mental, moral and spiritual qualities in the individual. On the other hand, the various features of Martial Arts and their complex world, provide the individual who practices them with an integral formation. Not without reason, they are Arts and not just simple sports. Finally, the number of federation licenses exceeds with remarkable clarity any other known sport, even considering that there's little government assistance and not much motivation to exercise them. Very few
Raúl Gutiérrez achieve professional success, economically speaking. However they are there... Day by day more women are entering these modalities in search for those measures that should be considered for a safe life and as a preventive method in front of an increasingly violent and dangerous society, in which females are those who suffer most from its adverse effects, perhaps because of their apparent physical and technical weakness. Violence is nowadays commonplace of our lives; assaults, robberies, muggings, rapes and murders are unfortunately almost normal in our society. Many people are afraid of going out, walking through parks and public places, going to clubs, or having to go through certain neighborhoods, streets or areas of the city after dark. Policing measures or means put in place often can't give us adequate protection, and we usually get to them just to narrate facts that have ALREADY OCCURRED. This is very regrettable." Offenders don't confine themselves simply to steal their victims, they also want to apply them pain and punishment, even if this makes no sense. And it's then when the victim pays the price. All this has become so frequent and common among us that every day we hear, we discuss or we read about such a serious situation. Still, very few take preventive measures, and on the other hand, very few adopt reasonable precautions and devote part of their time to "PREVENTIVE" training, so as not having to regret later serious situations. The worst mistake is to think that it will never happen to them. So they rely only on their luck. But the statistics say otherwise, the increase in violence and the number of victims is ever increasing, arriving at alarming figures. Prevention against abduction and rape is an issue that should concern all women and men alike. Under Spanish law (much like in Western countries), this violence occurs as a manifestation of discrimination, the situation of inequality and the power relations of men over women, and is carried it out by those who are and have been their spouses, or those who are or have been linked to them by similar sentimental relationships, even without cohabitation. Gender violence to which refers the above-mentioned Act includes any act of violence, whether physical or psychological, including aggressions to sexual freedom, threats, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty. The Comprehensive Law regulates therefore violence against a woman by a man who is or has been her partner. Gender violence affects women of all ages, social class, employment status, size of municipality of residence,
educational level, ideological positioning or religious option. Undoubtedly, the most extreme evidence of such violence are women killed by their partners or former partners. Statistics on deaths by gender violence provides information on the number and socio-demographic characteristics of women who die each year as victims of gender violence and their aggressors. Spanish statistics can serve as a reference with those of other Western countries to come to some interesting conclusions: In 2013, 54 women were killed by their partners or ex partners. This represents an increase over the previous year, in which 52 persons were killed. Only 11 fatalities (20.4% of the total) had reported their aggressors and only four deaths (7.4% of the total) had protective measures in force when the events occurred. According relationship between victim and perpetrator, in 31 cases they were a couple (spouses, intimate partners or boyfriends) and 23 cases were ex-partner or were in the process of breaking. Percentages in either circumstance represent, respectively, 57.4% and 42.6%. The victim and her aggressor were living together in the time of the murder in 29 cases (53.7% of total) and there was no coexistence in 25 cases (46.3%). By age group, fatalities in women aged 30 or younger were 14 (representing 25.9% of total), those between 31 and 64 were 33 (61.2%) and those aged 65 or older were seven (12.9%). Of the 54 fatalities recorded during 2013, 38 (70.4%) had Spanish nationality and 16 (29.6%) were foreign citizens.
WHAT PREVENTIVE MEASURES CAN OR MUST TAKE A PERSON? 1) Try to be more aware of these sort of problems. Facts, details, type and form. Learn or seek solutions. 2) Find ways to reduce and eliminate risks. This is precisely the issue that we intend to focus on and discuss here.
“Policing measures or means put in place often can't give us adequate protection, and we usually get to them just to narrate facts that have ALREADY OCCURRED. This is very regrettable.”
Fu-Shi Kenpo 3) We wish to inform you about of the problems that exist, and the measures you should take to solve them. With little effort you can get it and we are willing to help you.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE POLICE BEFORE THESE FACTS? 1) As expected, the police force and its means are perfectly applied provided they are present in the crime scene, arrive on time or, according to circumstances, have foreseen a possible attack. With this i'm not trying to dismiss their effective work, on the contrary, their means and experience are always successful, and it's common knowledge that at the end the law over imposes itself and justice prevails. The natural problem, as we all know, is that while the police conducts its commendable work for the defense of the weak and in benefit of society, the offender surprises us with his unexpected crimes. That's why the police always goes behind the offender. It's that simple. 2) The presence of law enforcement officers on a spot repels by itself any provision to execute a crime. This means that offenders will always seek to act outside the range controlled by police or safety agents. 3) Once a crime has occurred, the police force is applied, usually with great success. The problem is that material damage can be repaired in some way. But physical and psychological harm could take a lifetime...

MANSUR TEACHES HOW TO DEFEND ONESELF AGAINST JIU-JITSU SUBMISSIONS Considered one of the great authorities in the world in the art of teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the 9th grade master Francisco Mansur launches a DVD showing defenses against the most feared Jiu-Jitsu submission techniques. Text: Marcelo Alonso Photos: www.budointenational.com
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
It has always been said that a Master is one who is capable of going where others can’t get to. Master Mansur accepted our challenge and he did it without blinking. Seated in front of the table in the office while we were working over some details of the publishing of his latest book, I said to him: “Mansur, everyone talks about how to submit an opponent. Does that mean that the techniques are infallible?” Mansur thought for a moment, then said: “Ever y Jiu-Jitsu technique has its counter technique; it is an infinite game in which one has to always be a better player than the opponent.” “That’s fine, but no one seems willing to stick their neck out; it seems as if no one wants to explain how to get out of the principle submission techniques, as if it were a well guarded secret. Would you do an instructional video about it?” I asked him. “You’re a bad boy,” he replied, “but I’m worse, because I like challenges.” And in this way he went to bed that night scribbling down some notes and ideas fr om her e and ther e, and the following day he recorded a magnificent video that it seemed he didn’t want to finish. At the end of the day, we were taking some photos and the Master was very content, radiant even. The result, for tunately, is now at the r each of followers and students. It is a project that will mark an epoch, one more challenge that shows the didactic abilities and the great work of this Titan of the tatamis, a man who has over 50 years experience in the field, and who has the spirit and attitude of an authentic samurai.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
A
nyone who hears Grand Master Francisco Mansur speak about his technique of teaching Jiu-Jitsu has the impression that learning the Soft Art is as simple as learning to ride a bicycle: “Isn’t it? Jiu-Jitsu is an art that anyone can learn since it does not require great skills, though it does require one to have good reflexes. Helio Gracie prepared everything, the plane, the landing strip, and now we are on our way to the moon,” Mansur often says with his absolute admiration of the Master who gave him his 8th degree red and black belt. But, if Helio Gracie “took him to the moon”, no one can deny that Francisco has been an excellent astronaut. In the end, in nearly 45 years, he has taught Jiu-Jitsu to over 19,000 students, taking 39 of them to black belt, and all of them through a didactic method developed by the Master, called the Kioto system. “No one creates anything within JiuJitsu. What I did was to gather everything that Helio Gracie taught me and put it into an order that allows you to learn better and faster. I only made things easier so that you can learn how each thing must be done,” reveals the 66-year-old Master, recognized in Brazil for having the best and biggest Jiu-Jitsu school for children in the country. Thanks to his impressive teaching methods, Mansur has also developed a teaching method utilizing Jiu-Jitsu to help physically handicapped people (neurological problems, the deaf and dumb, the autistic, people with motor coordination problems, etc.). “Jiu-Jitsu is a blessing from God,” the religious fighter often says, who did 39 Vale-Tudo fights in the times in which he trained in Helio Gracie’s academy. With the authority of being one of the most artful in the world of teaching JiuJitsu, Francisco Mansur brings his brilliance to the teaching of the Soft Art to the general public. After launching the “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Bible” showing his best techniques in 200 colored pages, and a DVD where he shows the most important
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu basic techniques of the Kioto system, Master Chico (Master Paco)—as his students warmly call him—now opens his storehouse of knowledge in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to show us how to defend against the main Jiu-Jitsu submissions. Still enthusiastic about the response from his “Jiu-Jitsu Bible” and from the first DVD that contains a general overview of the main techniques taught in the first classes of the Kioto system, Mansur believes that the new DVD will be even more successful, if that’s possible. “Jiu-Jitsu is like a chess game with the body, each position has an attack and a defense and in that way the game continues until one of the opponents gets
check mate, which is the submission,” the Brazilian Master summarizes, who these days lives in New York. On this new DVD, firstly Mansur shows us how exactly to utilize Jiu-Jitsu techniques to get out of a check mate and how to apply, in the second place, the submission that will define the combat. “Jiu-Jitsu is a fantastic art where you play with the error of your opponent. It might be that the adversary is on my back, ready to get a choke hold on me, but I can apply a foot-lock and force him to submit before he can get around my neck,” the professor gives as an example, who still today considers Rickson Gracie, son of his master
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Helio), as the greatest fighter of all times. “I would like to see a fighter born who is as perfect as Rickson, but it won’t be easy. It is often said that Helio raised Rickson from his hand,” says Mansur by way of eulogy. Exactly for being considered one of the students closest to Helio Gracie, Mansur was chosen to referee the fight between Rickson Gracie and King Zulu, done in Maracanazinho in 1983. “I feel very proud to have refereed that confrontation, with Rickson
showing himself to be a samurai and Zulu a warrior. In the end, the technique of the samurai prevailed,” the master remembers with his eyes bright at speaking about the idol that he watched grow up.
Progressive movements Mansur explains that his greatest concern in the Kioto system is to follow a system of progressive movements that facilitates the learning: “If you have a girlfriend, and
she loves you, but doesn’t want to kiss you, you have to immobilize her in order to be able to get a kiss. Isn’t that right? The same happens with Jiu-Jitsu. In order to get to the submission, you have to start to dominate. That is the detail of my program,” explains the master with his particular sense of humor, highlighting the importance of practice in the evolution of an athlete. “In the beginning, you have to train the basics since we always start by having some difficulties in some
positions. If you move along assimilating the basic positions well, the evolution comes in a natural way in the following phases. Everything in Jiu-Jitsu is based on the principle of actions and reactions and a lot of practice. When I saw the Cirque du Soleil, I understood that nothing is impossible with good training,” he insists. The idea of progressive movements, a basic pillar in the Kioto system of Jiu-Jitsu, can also be observed in the “Jiu-Jitsu Bible”. “That is the first book of my series. There are 42 classes. When one goes from the first to the second book, you are already in love with Jiu-Jitsu. In my school, to get the blue belt you have to know all the techniques from books one and two. If you know the ones from 3, 4, and 5, you can reach purple belt,” affirms the creator of the Kioto system. On the three DVDs of submission defense, the master also maintains the idea of progressive movements. “Armlocks, American chokes, leg-locks, and foot-locks. In JiuJitsu, for all of those moves, there are defenses that normally allow you to counter-attack and leave the opponent in a difficult situation,” says Mansur enthusiastically, who is frequently invited by the New York Police Department to give seminars and courses. “JiuJitsu is a passionate art; in three or four months, a police officer in any part of the world can make himself a JJ practitioner. As a police officer, he can’t feel fear. JJ helps us to dominate ourselves and acquire that kind of control.” Very happy with the results of the collection of three DVDs about submission defenses, Mansur is already talking about his next project: DVDs about self-defense.
Self-defense, the next chapter Scheduled to be launched in November all over Europe, the new DVD, where Mansur reveals the best self-defense techniques from Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, will have everything necessary to be one of the most interesting in the series. “Self-defense works like a revolver, it is training and reflex actions and no more. Even the one who has a sedentary life learns that. It is purely reflex action,” Master Mansur assures us with his particular simplicity. Now we only have to wait and see.

Y
oroi-Kumi Uchi, or simply Kumi Uchi when practiced without the armor, was the specific form of the movements used in the battlefield. Peculiar characteristics involve the Kumi-Uchi, differentiating it according to each school or clan. This art retains unique ideas and some scholars and teachers explain that the Kumi-Uchi Yoroi was used immediately when a samurai lost his sword in the middle of the confrontation. Contradictions say the Kumi-Uchi Yoroi was merely a strategic reserve of body movements to protect form the enemy on the battlefield. Disagreements and opinions aside, what matters is the sequence of movements that reached the XX and XXI centuries, being called Kumi-Uchi. Yoko-dori in Japanese means "steal", "snatch", and it was first taught as a kind of Heiho, emphasizing, through thinking, an access road to victory. However, there are many applicative sequences involving this thought and thus, some masters prefer to teach Yoko-dori tactics as part of the Kumi-Uchi, set in predetermined ways. So Yoko-dori is the Seiteigata that teaches Tori, after losing his katana, to use techniques of Kumi-Uchi, where he should grab the opponent and take advantage of the approach to steal one of his weapons - tanto, aikuchi and wakizashi - to end the fight with it. We can realize the changes and adjustments in the Seiteigata, which are grouped in each practiced technique, so that it can be possible to use the weapon of the opponent. Consider the following: The Kumi-Uchi is characterized and differs from Yoroi-Kumi Uchi by entries that are not interrupted because on the volume of the armor. It's easy to tell the difference between these two points, when tested for comparison. The weight and volume of the armor and helmet preclude a series of movements, limiting the practice of Yoroi-Kumi Uchi when it is performed with full dress and not in a demonstration in which only the kimono is worn. Its movements are
summarized in small sequences that reveal more the thought line of attack and defense than a real ability to maintain a true and lasting confrontation. Then you can see that, of course, techniques evolve and the need for improvement makes the man look for answers and support for the development of his fighting ways. The Kumi-Uchi practiced without clothing of war is by itself rich and versed in grappling techniques and immobilizations that make possible a longer confrontation. Obviously, these forms developed in the Edo period in which Samurai warriors could carry two swords, raised in the thought of Kumi-Uchi numerous variables about Yoko-dori, that later were reorganized and defined as Seiteigata. Many practitioners of Bugei, when using what they have learned in the Kumiuchi, or even when put to test, feel difficulties in using approximation techniques and immobilization of the opponent standing up, either through the grip - what most common - or through the techniques practiced in Seiteigata. In either way, once the difficulty arises, you must adhere to the specific point at which it occurs, and resort to the original technique as support for elucidation. Of course, if we analyze a technique performed in a combined sequence, and another one in actual combat, we'll see that both, even if they are in the same line of thought, have different characteristics due to the need to adapt to the particular circumstances of the moment. So is also our mind, it depends on adaptation to understand and carry out the expected movement. An aggressor approaches you, clenches his fist or grabs a Tanto (knife) or even a Katana (if we think of ancient times) and launches a sharp blow toward your head. Before he approaches and packs his hand against you, he'll present clear evidence of his intention of carrying out a real attack. Observing is the first step that enables you to take good position before an attack. Although he tries to disguise or hide his intentions, as we can see in real cases recorded by
security cameras in public places, there always will be a specific point at which he will reveal the first signs of his intention to carry on with his attack. A second point is the exact distance that must exist between us and the opponent. The distance, above all, is what gives us a greater chance if the attacker holds a cutting or pointed object. We must keep the exact distance that forces the opponent to adopt an attitude, to take a step forward to carry out an attack... and is in that moment when your mind must be prepared to understand his attacking movement, foresee the possible ways in which he can use his arms and legs, how he will move and the directions of his attacks, watching if his hand is down, on top or at the side and what possible attacks can be done from that position, and so on. If you bend over to advance in a grab move, what possibilities has he to defend himself? Try to move in such a way that your opponent has to work harder with his head than with his limbs. Always seek angles that hinder the sequences of attack, etc. These small details always favor a good response to initial difficulties in any practice that seeks reality. It is important noting that the best way to prevent an attack, either on the street or in a public place, is simply not to BE there. Nothing is worth it when your life is in danger! We are analyzing situations to improve the technique to be used. Returning to our analysis, observing is the key! Observing the movements, the moment, the distance and, especially, the opponent's way of breathing. This will reveal much about his nervous state. We can say categorically that common people naively believe that if a man is well trained he is unbeatable. Men of immature wisdom, wondering about the way to become invincible, exalt the doubt in order to get the best response. But the man endowed with some understanding has a reverent belief, based on natural principles of peaceful cohabitation, and doesn't need the simple ideas of the common man, nor the
doubts of the other; he understands that respect and rationality of consciousness, in a single instant, can manifest all the techniques and is capable of defeating all armies with only its principles. In the wisdom of the techniques applied in Kumiuchi, we learn that what is simple is strong and powerful, that is, a path that favors rapid and effective actions. Well ... I guess everybody understands that a simpler way provides a clearer and more coherent reasoning. On the other hand, we know that not only is this factor what favors its effectiveness. An effective technique is a movement that has beginning and an end without interruption. In Kumiuchi, embracing Uke to bring him down seems a most natural movement. For some, it is necessary that these movements are corrected to increase their resilience to wear caused by the physical exercise of impact and explosion. An athlete consuming a lot of oxygen during combat is subject to greater fatigue than other athlete who consumes less. In the past, this was the difference between life and death in many battles defending the honor. In order to bring oxygen consumption under control is necessary to resort to the "economy of movement". This "economy of movements" means having a good motor coordination during the fight and look for the easy way avoiding unnecessary movements that would impair the performance of Tori. To have a good motor coordination and thus achieve the "economy of movement" during fights, you should pay attention to the following: it is necessary to strengthen the abdominal muscles - which will be reflected in the use of Hara and legs. Why is it necessary? It's simple: there's nothing more exhausting than the need to defend and attack simultaneously. If you have a good basic training, this will hinder the advantage of Uke allowing you the economy of movement. Just look at the way the old masters resist throughout the fight in an almost
effortless way - at least to our eyes - and in one motion, they project Uke in a perfect manner. When weight is maintained down in the correct way, it becomes difficult for Uke to project Tori. There are many exercises that can make possible this strengthening condition, and are practiced in most traditional schools. Many teachers know that we all possess natural abilities. According to Perez Gallardo (1993), the natural abilities "are those that are characterized by being present in all human beings, regardless of their geographic location and socio-cultural level, and which form the basis for the development of culturally specific skills..." And in many cases, what we have to do is develop them through exercises that increase our motor skills and spatial awareness. It is easy to check on some of the older Seiteigata the number of movements that use the ground as a complementary weapon to the technique performed. In most cases, hands and legs assume different positions that favor the application of angles favoring the impact if the technique is performed in projection or sudden attack. Once I had the opportunity to see a Kumiuchi master perform movements using his body parts as rebound
pieces for soft tissues of Uke's body. Interestingly, I heard one of the oldest practitioners who also witnessed the presentation, saying that this form was prior to the one executed in the original Seiteigata, where the floor was the highlight. Of the two forms, we can see that in addition to the projections, the classic Kumiuchi is unique in the ways of using the body and objects as secondary weapons. In a survey by a student who is an MD, we had the opportunity to verify that the impact of a body projected on the ground, especially in the case of a head drop, would cause a head injury. (Worth noting that in the old Kumiuchi there wasn't any concern about perfect technique, now in force in modern Judo). The manner of execution of the movement, coupled with the way of placing your hands, favoring head the impact either on the ground or against the hardest parts of Tori's body, is relentless in its consequences. It is believed that such techniques have been developed so avidly due to the use of the armor in the Sengoku Jidai period in Japan. The need for an efficient technique increasingly improved the use in combat of these destructive techniques. In a study by medical professionals, we see that the traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and
physical and mental deficiency, exceeded only by the cerebrovascular accident (CVA) or brain attack the as neurological pathology with greater impact in quality of life. TBIs can be classified into three types according to the nature of the wound of the skull: closed head injury, depressed fracture of the skull and open fracture of the skull. The closed head injury is characterized by the absence of head injuries or, at most, linear fracture. When there's no macroscopic structural brain injury, closed head injury is called concussion. Contusion, laceration, hemorrhage and edema may occur in closed head trauma with injury to the brain parenchyma. Traumatic brain injuries with depressed fractures are characterized by the presence of sunken fractured bone fragments compressing and damaging the adjacent brain tissue. Prognosis depends on the extent of the injury caused to the brain tissue. Open head injuries with exposed skull fracture show laceration of the peri-cranial tissues and direct communication of the scalp with brains, through sunken or chipped bone fragments. Usually this type of injury is severe and there is great possibility of intracranial infectious complications. Today, these techniques are practiced only in the graduation of Chuden and Okuden, but many schools preserved the way of thinking of the time, such as its form and sequences of execution. So, a big difference is observed between the thought of the time and its uses reflected in technical series previously ordered. Some have come to attribute the great weapon of war of the Japanese army to this type of knowledge, even in the twentieth century. The great masters of old knew what techniques were classified according to their impact consequence. Many scholars claim that the most advanced masters achieved great perfection through their knowledge and continuous
study of the medical science, including anatomical studies in bodies of prisoners of war, during the middle Ages in Japan. The most traditional schools taught their students to use small arms, which they kept hidden in their hands and could caused very specific injuries, like skull fractures on the convex side of the skull or in the base. Those in the skull convexity could be linear, depressed, or composite. Depressed skull fractures are the result of lesions induced by objects at low speed. The inside of the skull suffers greater damage than the outer part. These fractures can determine laceration of the outer brain lining membrane. Compound fractures are characterized by bone laceration, and can entail cerebrospinal fluid fistulas, being potential sources of meningitis, tumors and other intra-cranial infections. Fractures at the base of the skull can also damage the cranial nerves, whose endings are located there. Brain lesions can be classified into primary and secondary. Primary lesions arise as a result of the impact, but usually they are already present when receiving the impact. Secondary lesions are those of progressive course, arising as a consequence of bruises, edema, ischemia or hypoxia, which can lead to a delayed neurological damage. Brain tissue may be injured directly at the site of impact ("coup lesion") or in spots diametrically opposite to the impact ("counter-coup lesion"). The lower portions of the frontal and temporal lobes are the areas more prone to "countercoup lesions", since the bones of the skull base, especially in the temporal and anterior cranial fossas, have rough surfaces, full of anatomical accidents. It has been proved that beyond the purposes of self-defense, the Kumiuchi had a large number of substantial combat strategies that were far beyond the simple arsenal of projections, keys and chokes, as well as the objectives of its combat forms

Evan Pantazi reviews his first dozen years with us: 12 years of close collaboration, 21 videos and several books in five languages, as well as hundreds of articles, recordings, meetings and a lot of good moments. We think it's a good time to cast a glance back into the road traveled; life goes too fast and is good to stop now and then to admire the fruits we have collected along the path. When we started our collaboration, the Kyusho technique was almost unknown outside the US, where also had a questionable reputation. The thorough and painstaking job carried out by Master Pantazi has changed this paradigm and today Kyusho is amongst the most appreciated and recognized ways of inter-style work within the martial panorama. An achievement to be attributed to his teaching and detailed explanations, step by step, based on scientific research readings on the subject. Alfredo Tucci It has been a long journey with you and Budo International in order to reveal the ancient method of Kyusho. It has been highly rewarding and we have found that it has spread worldwide to strengthen individuals, groups and styles. The journey began as a controversial issue, however, after 12 years is a reality; its value, its continuous deepening in the study of human anatomy, physiology and functionality have been widely accepted and integrated all over the world. This has been achieved through over 20 videos that span multiple layers of integrated instruction in each, and provide the beginner as well as the more experienced ones a constant source to expand knowledge.
12 years, 21 videos, the most comprehensive Kyusho program On the surface we can readily see an introduction to the knowledge and an unfolding physical curriculum that started with the unique ways to revive the body from these attacks. The premise being safety, but in duality a way to reverse engineer the Kyusho from a health as well as dysfunctional skill… which was later defined in a higher degree with the First Aid video. In the beginning we utilized the most accepted terminology of the day (acupuncture point designations), but steadily progressed into the names of the nerves and other anatomical structures we were employing. So for all those already involved with Kyusho it would not shock or alienate them, but rather slowly educate all to the real underlying structures and cause of dysfunction. All we have done has been exhaustingly researched and verified by medical and scientific specialists of many fields of study… field tested hundreds of times on thousands of practitioners around the world. The more we produced the more we were able to escalate that research and inform many more participants what worked, what did not and why. Each video has a technical application on the basic level with the first 5 DVDS illustrating most of the targets that are practical for combative use. We demonstrated drills and ways to improve targeting in live motion… a breakthrough for Kyusho instructors that typically employed static application. The next series were situational application using the same targets with specialized results from takedowns to grappling, joint manipulations and weapon attacks. These were kept open with targeting as the goal instead of specific technique that are prone to failure in high stress and adrenalized restrictions under real attack. And in the process helped multiple thousands of Martial Artists from all styles to enhance their methods and increase the efficiency… even answer the questions they had about the very strangest of postures or actions in their style.
Vital Points After this basic understanding was accomplished the second series dug deeper into the Martial Arts encompassing skills such as Iron Shirt, How to break down the hidden meanings in Martial Arts forms, body compression, the significance in the tools or weapons you choose and much needed reverse engineering of Kyusho First Aid. Within this second phase of Kyusho education we concentrated more on the physiological and functional aspects of the human body and how to disrupt or restore them more profoundly than in the first phase. Each of these DVDS had a technical level that was readily understandable, but each also had deeper information in them as well. As one example the Iron Shirt DVD at the surface level instructed on how to protect the body from deeper penetration and affect from Kyusho attacks. A secondary layer of information inherent in this production exposed hidden purpose for many moves within Martial Arts Forms. But it goes deeper still.
A third layer was how to get past these protections. Now I know this was obvious to all just by the first layer presentation, but it also demonstrated how to deal with the phenomenon of the "Non Responder". This is the rare 5% individual that typical Kyusho methods do not work on due to variation in physiological structure (ie deeper set nerve or higher sensory thresholds as example). The processes explained and demonstrated how to use this on non-responder types, but more important on adrenalized attackers. Yet another level in this understanding can aid those who use the health methods to help people in a more profound way getting past resistive issues. All of the DVDS have these layers that emerge to the viewer after much physical hands on experience is attained. As you use the surface layer information and assimilate the skills, more and more of these unfolding levels are revealed.
The first DVD was an introduction and overview of Kyusho and the various ideas that had evolved at that time. It introduced the 3 main revivals as a multifaceted instructional for all future skills. Although called revivals or ways to fix the body function you stopped applying the Kyusho, it presented the idea of what Kyusho really is. Using Kyusho we actually cause a functional imbalance that the brain can not readily or immediately balance on its own. Left alone these imbalances will be fixed, however in that time or process there can be adverse effect such as prolonged dizziness, nausea, impaired vision, diarrhea, headache and others. What these revivals do is instruct the user to balance the functionality quickly to prevent or remove these outcomes. This it accomplished with a transfer of internal neurological messaging, via and external energetic transfer or stimulation. Thus the practitioner has begun the process of understanding the physiological nature of man and how profound an influence over it they actually have, the basis of all Kyusho.
The second DVD was devoted to the anatomical and physiological functionality of the arms. Surface description involved pain induction, loss of muscle or motor control, reflexive and body reactions and methods to enact them. Deeper levels depict how the nerves are situated between other structures that actually serve to protect them, but more rapidly and efficiently to access them in a challenging mobile application. This served as an idea (later expanded on in the seizing DVD)... Not as the only method. The ideology of Targets and Tools becoming the focus as opposed to techniques that fail under fast aggressive, spontaneous and stressful need was another layer as well, preparing the mind and spirit for subsequent training. Kyusho is not locked into set technique, but rather free flowing and open to each individual's aptitude and abilities.
The third DVD in the series demonstrated the powerful effect Kyusho can have on the body, as we explored the anatomical structure of the head. Along with Building on a reflexive system of neural programmed response (not to be thought of as NLP), training which was unique in Kyusho, it expanded into a synergistic approach developing accurate and powerful responses. From the myriad of programming drills, we successfully pushed far beyond other training methods of the day. The long criticized static KO was put to rest and brought Kyusho into reality for real protection. Many Kyusho practitioners found that they were accidentally KO'ing their training partners during light handed practice. This created the foundation to build as surprise and accuracy was far superior to static method or technique training. Deeper aspects included the reduction of the recipients Iron Shirt (covered in greater detail later in the series), along with what many Kyusho proponents thought they needed in their study‌Polarity.
The fourth DVD was devoted to the weaker targets of the body which are substantially more difficult to access. Difficulties include clothing, arm protection, targets below site line and more. We once again included a drill to make these targets accessible instinctively within a spontaneous methodology. At the surface the target access appears to be the soul lesson, as with all the DVD's. However there are many additional layers such as organ attack as well as tactics that afflict you under stress. The dynamics and difficulties in targeting and adrenalized and highly mobile body instill the need for control and or body positioning first to be able to enact in reality. So just as Kyusho attacks deeper levels of the human so to do its various components, once the surface material is assimilated.
Vital Points
The Fifth DVD was devoted to the vulnerabilities of the legs; being nerves, muscles, blood vessels, muscle spindle cells and others. Again at surface level the targets are extremely powerful and capable of even rendering the person unconsciousness. It is also where the targets have a duality, stability & motion or attacking weapons‌ unique possibilities therefore exist. The Martial Arts stances were developed in part to protect the legs and understanding through experience what each does and what vulnerability they also open is crucial to your overall education. Actually they must also be fully trained in both arenas so that your legs as well as arms can successfully target these powerful tools. But it also has many deeper ramifications in regard to the brains stability, balance and control of the nervous system. It is the flux and transitional attributes that are a key in this level of work, but rarely understood without much experience. This is a very important key but too vast for the scope of this article.
The sixth DVD was to demonstrate at the surface level easy ways to weaken the body so the opponent falls by their own loss of functionality with far less physical action or risk on your part for counter measures. These simple one step targeting methods did far more though as it released the Martial Artist fully from technique and counter technique approach in training. But again several layers are presented for the advancing man. This level we learn to weaken the base as the balance is disturbs. As the brain via the body fights to regain that balance is its weakest time. Yes the takedowns are great and very efficient... Maybe all you need for your personal skill goals, but if you plan on advancing to higher levels the deeper lessons must be understood.
The seventh DVD was concentrated in ground fighting application at surface levels with some targets that could weaken the opponent, escape certain positions, control or submit the opponent. The deeper level was to aid the ground fighter in how to become more efficient or think of new ways of working their current methods. These were not techniques but descriptions of the sensitive and vital targets that took less power to cause the pain, dysfunction or control, to be assimilated no matter what style or methods you do. But an even deeper issue is learning from the opponent's resistance how best to capitalize and read this restriction (again later detail in the Iron Shirt DVD). As example; anytime a person takes a position of strength they cause a simultaneous weakness.... the training not only helped he practitioner realize these, but how best to access them. Once you have the innate ability to flow past a strength to a weakness, you have become far more formidable.
Vital Points “It has been a long journey with you and Budo International in order to reveal the ancient method of Kyusho. It has not only been very rewarding, it has spread throughout the world since this release, empowering a great individuals, groups and styles
“As the old expression goes, "when the student is ready the teacher appears"… the teacher is within yourself and once you experience the Kyusho, your arts will never be the same!”
The 8th DVD was admittedly the most confusing for people as the joint locks were so well known it was difficult for many to get past prior training and use the nerve structures over the mechanical lock. However by learning the nerves to a higher degree and new skill set, the tactile aspects substantially rose in those that assimilated it. But again several other layers exist that aid the practitioner to a greater degree. For example it is a visual, tactile, empathetic and therefore valid way to lear n and understand the energetic quotient when using Kyusho and its depth of effect on the body. All the correct visual cues are depicted when the nerves are attacked from these stretched positions (another deeper layer)‌ that help the practitioner realize the internal neurological imbalance or dysfunction they inflict. This is a valid and honest validation of your personal skill‌ and what Kyusho instructors must look for to fully understand the depth of the practitioners attack.
The 9th level DVD presented even greater barrier challenge for most not so much in the difficulty to physically utilize, but mentally accept for Kyusho against weapon attacks and was the most contested. The approach, idea and simplicity were difficult for most at the beginning. This of course was until assimilated and natural. It's hidden facets are numerous, but to list a few, it is the concept of entering not only for safety but for the initiation of Kyusho you will not stop an attacker by retreating. It contains the simple answer of simultaneously breaking the opponents balance, forward range of motion, mobility and defense. In the more internal side the body is switched from motor function to sensory to overwhelm the conscious mind and physiological attributes of it. This begins a deep study in neural programing of later levels.
The 10th DVD… Then came the shocker... The DVD that was ridiculed as having nothing to do with Martial Arts (it really does), but sold out most language additions in weeks. The intimacy enhancement production illustrated not just some ideas for enhance sexual pleasure, but more importantly the idea of nerve location and investigation on a more subtle basis. When we power through certain Kyusho targets, we gain good effects. But to advance in tactile understanding and capability we need to slow the aggressive only approach. Digging even deeper into what benefits this has for the Kyusho practitioner, the concept of time delay or advancement in affects, arises… very advanced and amazing information… and practice is great.
The 11th DVD on energetic transfer was of course popular as the term KO was emblazoned across the cover. People believed it would be a collection of KOs they could copy or learn‌ (as if the many in prior DVDS was not enough), instead it is a study in stimulating the opponents nervous system are varying degree and in varying location. The concept of electrical conduction was addressed in another way to help clarify the process for those in Kyusho‌ scientific terms not used prior. The deeper benefits or information lay in the discovery and ability in producing certain vibratory complications in the opponent (yes you must really have a good base in Kyusho to see this). Once this level is achieved along with the prior levels, you could be self-perpetuating in your skills with Kyusho and your understanding to help others.
The 12th DVD was working Kyusho within classical forms to unlock the secrets within the form and unleash the potentials for the practitioner. The base of the lesson was to illustrate that what is seen in any form, is not a complete picture and that with a simple change in thinking, you could at minimum double your abilities and possibilities. This was largely shown by using the ideas that the blocks could be strikes, the hand positions were multifaceted weapons and withdrawing motions of the Wing Chun form as an attack. There is far more this video explains to help anyone take any form and develop vast potential, for practice, protection or instructional ideas. It also fully explained yin and yang relations and how most of us relied only on one of these concepts until introduced to the Vital Points involved. One of the deeper concepts was in the affect differential on the negative attack... Or the idea that you are not always overloading the opponent, but also learning the way to drain their personal ability, power or energy. An infinite library is at your fingertips with this information.
The 13th DVD is on the Iron Shirt and as ominous or mystical as sounds, it is a simple but deeper Much Deeper) understanding of Kyusho. It delves into reading the body physiology far beyond the tactile approach of the grappling DVD. This is in my estimation the most profound information related to Kyusho. On the surface it teaches us to protect our more vital areas, on a secondary level it tells us how to get past these protections. A deeper level yet gives us a great understanding on the conscious brains control and monitoring of the physiological functionality. So all the Kyusho displayed and explained relate to this level of comprehension and control. And is all one needs to be well situated in this skill, but it is still only the first 20%. We realize most will be satisfied with this skill attainment and be far better in their styles and possibility... In fact they will never be able to return to the pure physical traditional arts without involving Kyusho. However for the perpetually advancing man there is more and with even greater reward. And if you look closer at this film you will get a glimpse and insight of this potential... This was ground breaking information in Kyusho; as were most of the videos... But breaking barriers and continuously advancing the art and skill demands it.
The 14th DVD was a follow up on the prior wing Chun and Iron Shirt DVDS to fully illustrate what looking deeply at any action can lead you to unlimited self-potential. So this DVD explores a simple 5 motion hand pattern (found in the Sil Nim Tao form of DVD 12) unlocked and expanded upon via Kyusho to show you the infinite amount of potential Kyusho unlocks for you. In addition it it is linked to the first 9 DVDS (curriculum order) to further illustrate that the curriculum contained in the DVDS is not a standalone format, but fully and universally adaptable to your personal needs or passions. One of the deeper concepts was the ability to tacticly feel the resistances or openings of the opponent (in part, the essence of the Iron Shirt). This is a crucial topic in Kyusho and must be fully realized for a practitioner to advance to their optimal potentials.
The 16th DVD broke totally new ground to Kyusho practitioners and Martial Artists worldwide‌ the secrets of compression. Yes everyone knew you could compress certain arteries and cause a Vaso Vagal Sycope (feinting) as in the blood choke on the carotid artery. But what was not known is that the same mechanism could be also used on the nerves or even more remote locations like the inner ankle to cause the same affects. There was also the speed or efficiency to cause instant dysfunction as opposed to time delayed on blood attack alone... And all of this still only the surface of the matter in compressions. We added different revivals to handle this new Kyusho reality as well as we separated the Dim Mak from the Kyusho to set the record straight (they are not the same thing)! We have a first glimpse of the Dim Mak as intended blood attack, not TCM or acupuncture points, but real vascular vessels and bodies accessible to attack. The deeper information lays in the legendary "delayed" aspects and far more, but for later discussion.
The 17th DVD opened and ancient artifact of the specialized weapons to better achieve the Kyusho attacks, actuate the Dim Mak attacks and increase the skill for all practitioners. On the surface we explained the 6 hands presented in the ancient Bubishi (many great Karate Instructors labeled the Bible of Karate). These hands not only fit the anatomical structures to access the vital targets to a higher degree, but also depicted the secret energetic transference of kinetic energy most miss in the beginning of their Kyusho training. This is what makes Kyusho seem effortless as well as substantially increase the accuracy even in dynamic stressed action. As if this was not enough it also contained many levels of transitional impacts and explained why even the oldest of the old instructors retained their fighting skills far past the point in life where speed, power and agility was diminishing. But more importantly it set the stage for the third phase of Kyusho (at this time only the first phase was being openly taught, demonstrated or discussed).
The 18th DVD was a further examination of one weapon of the prior 6, to illustrate the infinite scope a correct and powerful but simple tool can be. On the surface it illustrated the correct formation of the hand for Kyusho, why it worked as it did and how best to utilize it on a number of targets many would not consider using it on (until Kyusho). Deeper levels exposed the compression methods of DVD 15 in a smaller scale attack with the same devastating effects to both Kyusho and Dim Mak. And as a special affiliated informational aspect the attack was even demonstrated as an attack to the brain stem and the depth of incapacitation Kyusho can have with even a single weapon and small range of motion. This raised the level far above the Dim Mak applications in intensity as well as new levels of possibility most only conjecture on, here is demonstrated. And yes still not the full range of what you will see in this information as time goes on… and still only the first 20% of Kyusho with the majority still left to release… on a deeper anatomical and scientific basis.
The 19th DVD was titled First Aid but it was far from just this level of Kyusho Application, reversal or remedy. The surface level demonstrated the attacks and counter measures of remedy… a revelation in Kyusho even for those involved for decades as this was all new to them, but our dual mission from the start. The deeper levels lay in the interconnections exposed, these clarified what many observe while doing Kyusho, but did not make the connections. We not only made these connections but validated and verified them through a host of medical professionals in the neurological fields… then of course in actual application to share with you. This detail and cross research is why we have excelled in the field far beyond the others and how we based our reality training programs… we won't teach what will not work in real stress and need. There are again even deeper layers involved in this production, but most important to understand is this concept is also the key to unlocking all of the DVDS as explained, by using reverse engineering processes. But this is not just for Kyusho, it holds for any Martial Art... It is a key for you to see deeper into any style.
Extra Releases Kyusho Top Ten (DVD 15) was an extra DVD laced in the middle of the curriculum and a spur of the moment shooting. Typically when I got to Madrid, Spain… we would set aside 2 days of Filming at Budo International Headquarters and get two films done each day. All of these DVD's were not scripted or rehearsed, they are simply spontaneous instructional classes as it is more comfortable and interesting this way. The only DVD to follow a list was the first aid as we did not want to miss any of the levels, but still not scripted and spontaneous). This time however we rolled right through the third and fourth videos in half the time leaving a half day of shooting time open. So on an impromptu urge we filmed this video which was a compilation of my top ten targets in Kyusho. We also wanted to change the format a bit and take it outside to show some simple self-protection ideas using these targets. This extra DVD made on a whim became Budo Internationals Top selling DVD in it's long history… and still stands as a very concise and simple idea of real selfprotection. TKD Series DVD 20 was a special request from the chief representative of the ITF in Taiwan, Horacio Daniel Obon. He had seen Kyusho and began learning and traveling to seminars all over the world (not an easy accomplishment from Taiwan). He was convinced that Taekwondo could benefit greatly from Kyusho and in this belief he asked me to do a collaborative curriculum for the style. I of course accepted the challenge (never practicing TKD) and began a DVD series. This first release adopted the first 9 levels of the above Kyusho Curriculum and worked them all through their first Pattern called Chong Ji. Just prior to production of this filmed course, Mr. Obon submitted the information, rough film and the design of a complete curriculum to the ITF leader in Korea and son of the Founder General Choi, Grandmaster Choi Jung Hwa… who stated his support and blessings… look for more releases in the future, already filmed and ready for production. Women's Self Protection DVD 21 was the latest release and the second production not filmed at Budo… as well as the start of a new approach to Kyusho. As stated all must evolve and advance so as not to become stale and insignificant, Kyusho is no different. This DVD at surface level is a simple, effective method of quick and successful use of Kyusho for self-protection. The model Daniele Hailey was hired as a model with no prior experience. As we filmed the way to train the lady, all the success and affects were real and of her doing. She accepted fully what we asked her to do and she did it easily. When we went outside for a bit more realistic testing, it was spontaneous for her… again illustrating that in one instructional session she had the skill to protect herself with Kyusho. On a deeper level we are working with cross neural programing and a process we resurrected form the Ancient Bubishi… and it underlays the 3rd phase of Kyusho as well in its profound and escalating advancement of Kyusho.
So for all of the multiple thousands of supporters who purchased these productions... Even those I taught during the filming, Go back now after you gained the first layers of skill. When you view them again more will be seen.... As the old expression goes, "when the student is ready the teacher appears"… the teacher is within yourself and once you experience the Kyusho, your arts will never be the same! I must also thank the great people of Budo for over 12 years now and with steadfast interest and enthusiasm for the Kyusho Project. First and foremost is Alfredo Tucci, Directing Manager of Budo International Publications, Co. now a dear friend and a guiding light for all in the Martial Arts. I remember the first time meeting him, pleasant, cordial and with great enthusiasm, optimism and energy. He had heard the claims of Kyusho and was himself skeptical, but open to explore the idea. He sat in on the first filming and witnessed the new approach (based on an ancient skill)… he was convinced and has fully supported this in belief of it's worth to the Martial Arts as a whole. Ah Javier, what can I say as you have taken these raw films and created great viewing experiences for the people. Marga for the magazine production, William and all the staff for your hospitality and patience for the large number of people I brought into film… not an easy crowd to work with. And of course to all that offered themselves for the pain, dysfunction and states of unconsciousness or illness (common on the Dim Mak Applications), you gave of yourselves to help others learn. Most will never realize this pain or experiences you went through for the education of many, but I thank all of you. Many people have come and gone, some forming their own groups, others for other reasons… but all at one time gave you a bit of themselves to help you.
Shifu Shi Miaozhi , is one of the best teachers who have emerged from the best generation of teachers of Shaolin , and he is a highly respected student of Master Shi de Yang. In this DVD he is going to introduce one of the most characteristic forms of the Shaolin style, Xiao Hong Quan . The origin of this Tao Lu is halfway between a historical reality and a legend. It is centuries-old but today it is still considered essential in the teaching of this martial art , because it contains the essence of Shaolin Gong Fu and is a good tool for learning the method of the Great Palm, Zhang Fa Palm Techniques. One of it s main features is that it is famous for its effectiveness in real combat . Shaolin Xiao Hong Quan could be defined as a Tao Lu whose development is accurate and with rhythm, the technique is powerful and strong, and when executed properly you could say it is like the wind . This is Tao Lu basic steps and movements from other types of Gong Fu . It can be said that it has a full set of combinations of techniques based on the movement of the hands, legs, eyes, step and footwork, and the whole system of theory and practice on the offensive and defensive projections. The DVD includes warm ups , a training routine at different speeds and angles , and step by step techniques for self-defense applications . A routine that anyone interested in learning this martial art should know in depth.

SATRIA FIGHTING ARTS Martial Arts of Nusantara It gives me great joy to introduce the Satria Fighting Arts to Budo International readers. I will be going through the syllabus of the SFA in a chronological, technical and tactical fashion, but I always like to start from the very beginning to give you a good understanding, and a brief background history of myself, and my journey in the SFA. As we go along, I will give you insight into some of our training methods, the philosophy and the principles of our practice, passed down to me by my late teacher, Guru Ma Prem.
MY BACKGROUND AND HISTORY As a young boy growing up in one of the roughest parts of London, I knew from a very young age that in order to survive the constant bullying that I encountered from early school years, I needed to learn how to defend myself quickly. My father had boxed in the army where he served in Spain, so growing up, he taught me a thing or two in boxing. I practiced different systems, Wing Chun was my first, but I found it didn't help me as I continued to get beaten up. I was about 11 years old when I met my first real teacher, Sifu Gerry Tann. He taught me the art of Kuntao, a ferocious street fighting system, and I trained with him until I was about 19 years old. Gerry had entered myself, and some of his senior students to various tournaments, which we dominated for several years. Then in 1989, during the open tournament at the Birmingham National Championship, I had an experience on the mat that would change the course of my path. My training with Gerry had come to an end and he advised me to do a seven days fast, which led me to my next teacher.
VISION OF A FEMALE WARRIOR On the seventh day of my fast, I had a clear vision of an Indonesian female warrior moving in a dance-like form, a soft fluid movement in motion that I had not yet seen. I was barely twenty years of age, and I could sense change was coming. I felt that my evolution was leading me this way and I knew I just had to trust it. I had no idea where to go, or who to see, but going to Holland felt right. Whilst asleep on the train, I felt an urge to wake up and immediately got out at Rotterdam and headed towards the Town Centre. Along the way, there was an Indonesian restaurant called Raden Mas. It was still early in the morning, and the restaurant was closed. Below the restaurant was a shop that sold clay pots and ornaments, which was open. So I decided to enquire about Pencak Silat. The shop attendant was opening her mail, and had no idea what I was talking about. At that very moment, she opened up a flyer with information on Guru Ma Prem, Pencak Silat, Ayurveda, Alpha training, etc., and a telephone number. As I was about to leave, she called me back and handed me the flyer! Of course, by now, I knew this just had to be it!!
GURU MA Guru Ma Prem was born of a Royal Javanese family, raised in the outskirts of Java Barat, in a village called Bandung. During the time of the Japanese occupation, she moved to Holland like so many other Indonesians during the 1940's and 1950's. She had grown up with Pencak Silat, traditional Indonesian dance and Javanese mysticism as a way of life. She was a great influence amongst the Indonesian community, and often protected her people from the control of the Dutch authorities. She was highly evolved and very knowledgeable, wrote several books on esoteric literature, which to this day are used at the Sphinx University. She set up the school (De Sphinx University) and taught Pencak Silat, Esoteric studies, Religious studies,
Alpha training, Yoga and Ayurveda as part of a full and comprehensive syllabus. After many years of studying with her, travelling back and forth from London, Guru Ma, taught me the principles and exercises that would open up my body and mind to this beautiful art, leaving me with the most incredible keys to understanding the natural flow of bodily motion and movement. In 1999, after collating all the training methods and principles she had taught me, both she and I, decided to put it together methodically, to teach and help students to lear n it systematically. Hence, the SATRIA (WARRIOR) FIGHTING ARTS - the practice of the Ancient Arts into Modern Day, was birthed. Out of this also came SATRIA YOGA, a training method based on its 144 postures, practiced with the principles of yoga along with specific breathing exercises. During my time with her, I had also visited her homeland, Indonesia (former Nusantara) on several occasions, learning differnent styles of Silat, completing Cimande with Guru Makmur, Silat Wali Mahmud with Pendekar Jumhi, a family style of Minang Silat with Bapak Rusli, and a family style of Padang with Guru Asnan, all of which I teach separate to the Satria Fighitng Arts. Sadly, Guru Ma passed away on 13th June 2012, and her eldest son, Chris, became successor of the university in Rotterdam.
THE SATRIA FIGHTING ARTS “Why the name, Satria Fighting Arts? Well, having trained in so many different arts and after completing different styles of Silat, I realized that Guru Ma was teaching me much more than just a bunch of techniques, applications, and fighting methods. She was teaching me the way of life of the Warrior Arts. The Satrias (or in Sanskrit, 'Kshatriya') were protectors of the weak, the poor, the needy, helpers of the frail in their communities and were also men and women of light and inspiration. Guru Ma taught me postures, exercises, techniques and methods of training that were always pointing to a deeper and more unified way of life. A life that encourages one to walk closer to nature and to learn the many lessons we encounter in our lives. What is also unique about the SFA is that it has its own Yoga system (SATRIA YOGA). My wife, Laarni is the main Representative and Chief Instructor of this syllabus, and also does Instructor Courses around Europe.
“the way of life of the Warrior Arts. The Satrias (or in Sanskrit, 'Kshatriya')”
Indonesian Arts Satria Yoga can be practiced as a supplement to the SFA, but it can also stand as an individual practice to condition and strengthen the body, amongst many other benefits.
THE STRUCTURE OF THE S.F.A. The structure of SATRIA FIGHTING ARTS covers every aspect of the fighting arts with its physical, technical and mental training methods. It covers all aspects of physical conditioning, - speed, strength, power, agility, mobility, endurance, flexibility, relaxation, tendon strength and special breathing methods to enhance all of the above. On a technical level, it covers 'striking' with use of the whole body, hard and soft parts, throws, locks, chokes, ground fighting, pins, traps, evasions, feints, sweeps, grabs, multiples attackers, weapons (both hard and soft, long and short). Mental training includes concentration, cognitive training and meditations. The SFA has 144 base postures (much more when broken down) that are divided into both 'male' and 'female' positions. These postures are expressed through a dance called the 'Kembangan'. With this dance, the postures become movements that get absorbed by the student, and are then owned and expressed naturally through their individual frame, own character and personality. No two persons will ever move the same. Phase 1 - 'SEMBAH' - the original 'greeting' amongst south-east Asians. From this posture, one learns the basics of Bela Diri (self-defense), learning how to use correct structure and correct biomechanics with striking and some evasions. During this phase, the student learn accuracy, control, speed, focus, balance, alignment, fluidity and awareness. Partner drills, pad work and light sparring are all implemented in this phase. Phase 2 - 'RETURNING TO THE GROUND' through the postures (both male and female) of Kucing (Cat), Harimau (Tiger), Buaya (Crocodile) and Kura Kura (Turtle), one learns all fighting principles and techniques that cover ground fighting in its entirety. Heavy emphasis is placed on conditioning the body to become strong, quick and fluid. Phase 3 - 'GARUDA' - covers twelve different steps (six male and six female) and all angles. The Garuda postures are designed to teach students quick fluid striking, evasions that will work against multiple attackers, and weapons training. It has no ground element except for one posture and is mainly used for
upright fighting, one-to-one or against multiple attackers. Its main strength is the structure it moves in - protected, yet lighting quick! Phase 4 - 'GERAK -GERIK DAN GARUDA OLEH URAT NAPAS' - Gerak-Gerik means 'appropriate action and reaction' and is an old training method to enhance and expand the understanding of possible applications, and explore new ones. It is also used to develop sensitivity and body awareness. This is also accompanied with breathing in postures, helping the body to open more and strengthen the tendons, muscles and fascia. This method of training is deeply influenced by Ilmu Kesadaran (knowledge of body consciousness). PHASE 5 - 'SARANG LABAN LABAN' (Spider Web) - This is a tactical phase of training that teaches students how to set up traps, very much like a chess game, and improves the ability to fight at close range, mid, long, against multiple attackers, tricking, angles of striking to nerve points, more breathing exercises to enhance stamina as well as knowledge of energetic pathways in the body.
“Guru Ma taught me postures, exercises, techniques and methods of training that were always pointing to a deeper and more unified way of life.
Silat
“The structure of SATRIA FIGHTING ARTS covers every aspect of the fighting arts with its physical, technical and mental training methods.”
PHASE 6 - 'THE KEMBANAGAN' (Flower Dance) - This phase, in my opinion, is the most beautiful, yet most misunderstood, and the part that Ma had emphasized the most. It is the phase in which a student brings together everything he/she have learnt into a fluid dance that is also used in sparring and for entering the 'sasaran' (training area). As the student continues to develop, the Kembangan becomes a tool for many things including healing and balancing their own body and energy levels. PHASE 7 - 'WEAPONS TRAINING' - The SFA Weapons training is a very sophisticated method of training with both soft and hard weapons, long and short and a mixture of all. Some of the weapons used are Pisau Bedik, Pisau Belati, Pisau Badik (straight short, long and curved knives), Golok (short thick knife), Karambit (curved claw blade)‌Sepasang Pedang Pendek (mid-range sword, double and single), Sebiah Keris, Sebialh Keris Berleuk, (straight and curved Keris), Soft (female) weapons include the Destar (head wrap) Selendang (scarf), Sarong (hipwaist wrap). PHASE 8 - 'THE SACRED KERIS' - In this phase, deeper knowledge of the anatomy and nerve points are taught through sixteen postures that cover a total of 108 parts of the body. PHASE 9 - 'ILMUS NAPAS' - In this phase, five different breathing exercises are taught. These breathing exercises help to strengthen the whole body of the practitioner, helping him/her to withstand blows better, increase softness, hardness, lightness, stability as well as fluidity. PHASE 10 - 'FULL UNIFORM' or 'LOTUS KEMBANGAN' - this phase is the complete marriage of the male and female postures and energies, including all
that has been lear nt and expressed through the Kembangan. In these articles, I will not only be writing about the SFA, but I will also give you insight into all the other Silat styles that I learnt and completed, hoping to give you a deeper understanding of the beautiful Indonesian arts.
SFA INSTRUCTOR Courses As a complete syllabus, the SFA has an 'Instructor Course' for those wishing to become Instructors of this art. Our Instructors certificates have the seal and stamp of the Sphinx University, and offer a complete manual as part of the course. We hold these courses in various countries. In Spain, my Regional Representative is Sebastian Deibe, based in Madrid and runs a full-time martial arts academy. I run these Instructor courses through him, as well as Seminars in Spain. To find out more about these courses, or how to learn the SFA, you can contact him via his website (www.deibe.es)

Avi Nardia “Anyone who is not my student who claims to teach KAPAP or “the real KAPAP” is either dishonest or deranged. Can you imagine during Bruce Lee's lifetime that a person would suddenly appear and claim to be the “Real Jeet Kun Do?”

Trust people is the ONLY way to know if you can`t trust them, But been as a bird that trust her wing and Not the brunch its seat on, and when a weak brunch break the trust the bird just fly a way as the bird know each branch that fall from tree is green for few days and than dry out, that's my simple test in KAPAP for years to Instructors and “partners” as also to my student that think after got the first level of Trust after week training as kapap level one or as a second week as level 2 they took anything they need, which is nothing more than empty papers without the moral ethic and code of warriors. Its more as self test they are
not aware as their ego that this is a mirror test into them self and that's why most of them failed and in ANA I found fails of 75 % of people as seem today we missing the code of moral in life and also in Martial arts as present life. there actions will show better than their talks. In order to maintain the highest quality instructors, we at ANA (Avi Nar dia Academy) use the Gideon test. At any given time, we have dozens of KAPAP instructor candidates in levels 1-4 of our program. Depending upon the person, successful completion of the KAPAP instructor program is either very easy, or else completely impossible.
Israeli Self Defense
Avi Nardia “it is better to search for 15 years to find the right teacher, than to study for 15 years with the wrong teacher
W ith enough time and effor t, virtually anyone can gain the technical and tactical skills to b e c o m e a K A PA P i n s t r u c t o r. However, the biggest test in KAPAP is to demonstrate integrity - an attribute which candidates either embody completely, or not at all. For instance, those who only seek to collect ego certificates will find our KAPAP program impossible. Thus, we use the Gideon test to distinguish our team members. The story of Gideon tells us how God quickly distinguished the 300 best warriors from amongst 32.000 soldiers. First God instructed Gideon to proclaim, “Whoever is afraid and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead.” In response to the Lord's directive, two-thirds of the soldiers retired. With ten thousand men still remaining, God told Gideon that there were still too many men. He told Gideon to march his men down the hill, as though they were going to attack the enemy. As the army passed by a body of water, Gideon watched the men stop at the water's edge to drink. Most of the men set their shields and spears down, dropped to their knees, and drank heartily with both hands as a cup. Gideon ordered those men to stand in one company. There were a few warriors who took water differently. These soldiers cautiously stooped at the riverbank with their spears and shields in their right hands while cupping water with their left
hands. If the enemy would suddenly appear, they would be ready. God said to Gideon, “These are the men whom I have chosen to set Israel free.” Even though there were only 300 men in this company, every one of them embodied the spirit of a true warrior. They were focused on their purpose and held their bearing in spite of thirst and distraction. They were vigilant - neither would they be victims of a surprise attack, nor would they miss their opportunity to seize victory at the opportune moment. That is how Gideon selected 300 warriors from amongst 32.000 men.
Israeli Self Defense
I have written before that it is better to search for 15 years to find the right teacher, than to study for 15 years with the wrong teacher. In KAPAP, we think that it's also about finding the right students. Fifteen years ago, I began to open my teachings to civilians. Before that time, I had only taught my system of KAPAP to select military and police personnel in Israel. As the first step of opening KAPAP, we ran a course called Kapap Level One Instructor and it was a full 5 days basic training. The primary objective of the course was to assess how much progress the students would have to make in order to be called full KAPAP teachers. I emphasized that the course was more like an “interview” phase for the students. Even though I read the student's credentials and many where ranked as “experts”, they quickly demonstrated that their previous ranking was far from reality when it came to fighting on the mat. These candidates, came from a particular moder n martial art that specifically states it is “Not Traditional Martial Arts - It's No Nonsense Martial Arts”. When they came to us to learn KAPAP, the top system, our assessment was that they were 'full' of nonsense and nothing more. They carried exaggerated titles and their
Avi Nardia idea of self-defense was based on three basic moves with lots of sound effects (fu, fu, fu‌) and choreography. Even if a candidate has low skill, I am happy to teach them as long as they have a good heart and maintain integrity. I have never turned a student away merely because they lacked physical talent (in fact, one of my most rewarding projects was to teach handicapped children). While I have no shortage of instructor candidates who want to learn the physical skills of KAPAP, only a a fraction our candidates are interested in upholding our morals and ethics. At ANA (Avi Nardia Academy) we constantly work to distinguish our Gideon Fighters/Instructors. In order to find those who will lead KAPAP into the future we actively weed out others who only chase certificates and titles but fail to behave like professionals. This constant process
ensures that our team maintains the highest standards. After all, Gideon could have instructed his troops to maintain their weapons. Instead, he preferred to observe their actions in order to learn about their nature. Similarly, I believe the fastest way to to find out if a person is trustworthy is to afford them your trust and see if they will maintain it each day. Along this route, some people forget that KAPAP Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 are a screening process. If one of my students forgets morals, ethics, integrity, or skills development, they fail the Gideon test. Gideon dismissed the soldiers who momentarily set their shields and spears aside. At Avi Nardia Academy, we dismiss those whom set their morals and ethics aside. This is the test of a person's spirit. We can try to teach techniques and fix errors but without the right spirit, one can't learn much. So far, only a very small number of KAPAP instructors have passed all four levels. We give Level 1 certificates so we can begin to learn who people really are. I say that I never 'test' my students. Rather, people reveal their own character through their actions. If someone fails the Gideon test at any level, they fail completely and are out of KAPAP. I can only smile when I see new “grandmasters” appear in Israeli Martial Arts who have failed KAPAP or simply watched our DVDs. Suddenly, techniques which are unique to KAPAP become the “New Official Curriculum” in their systems. Anyone who is not my student who claims to teach KAPAP or “the real KAPAP” is either dishonest or deranged. Can you imagine during Bruce Lee's lifetime that a person would suddenly appear and claim to be the “Real Jeet Kun Do?” Much to my surprise, some of my former students who only learned a small fraction of KAPAP, now open their own “federation” and claim to be the “Real KAPAP”. There are other people who I have never even met whom claim to teach KAPAP. Nobody can be the “Real KAPAP” if they never learned the first lesson: Integrity. There is a saying, don't argue with stupid people, or they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. It's funny and true. There are times when one must fight but mostly the way of
a zen warrior is to allow ones foes to destroy themselves. At Avi Nardia Academy, we ask people to either stay real, or stay real far away. As the founder of KAPAP combatives I lead KAPAP worldwide with a family model. I am very pleased to attract so many good quality members and representatives. Today, 15 years since I first began teaching KAPAP to the public, I am proud to see KAPAP spreading its wings and beginning to soar very high with new members around the world joining my team each day. “A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because her trust is not on the branch but on her own wings. Always believe in yourself.”
Combat Hapkido THE “TITLES EPIDEMIC” By Grandmaster John Pellegrini
In the last few issues we have discussed some very serious and controversial topics, so, for this article, I decided it was time for a fun look at one of the Martial Arts' most trivial (but still extremely controversial) concerns: the plethora of titles used and misused by martial arts instructors. But first a little historical information…
“Martial arts titles, as used today, are a fairly recent innovation that started in the early 1950s”
M
artial arts titles, as used today, are a fairly recent innovation that started in the early 1950s. Until then, there were only a few basic honorifics designed to simply separate the students from the teachers and to show respect to the senior members of a family, clan or guild. With the introduction and subsequent commercialization of Asian martial arts in the West, the proliferation of titles being used by instructors started to take hold and has now reached epidemic (some would say comical) proportions. Today, it is no longer enough to be recognized or addressed simply as a “Master” or “Grandmaster”. Many feel that they must use additional titles to assert their lofty position in the martial arts hierarchy. It does not matter to them (or they do not realize) that some of those titles are redundant, inappropriate or incorrect; they sound so important, so irresistibly exotic that they must be added to one's name. I will prove my point (and amuse you in the process) with a few examples. A few years ago, I noticed that some already prominent Grandmasters were not satisfied with that very high title and started using “Great Grandmaster” and even “Supreme Grandmaster”(what's next? “Great-Great Grandmaster”? How “Great” can anyone be? What about “Ultimate Grandmaster”? Or why not “Exalted Great Grandmaster” or maybe even “Sublime-Devine Grandmaster”?).
Another example is the shameless use of academic titles such as Doctor and Professor casually appropriated from official institutions. Let's be honest…there is no real, legitimate, Martial Arts University issuing Doctoral degrees or Professorships in the Martial Arts. So how do you obtain those titles? It's easy… just believe that you are “entitled” (pun intended) and use them. By the way, they are even more impressive when used in conjunction with other titles, for example: “Grandmaster Professor XYZ” or “Supreme Grandmaster Doctor XYZ”. But the real interesting part of this phenomenon comes with the use of Asian languages titles , mostly Japanese, Chinese and Korean (although Filipino and Indonesian are also represented). The most popular and beloved is the title “Sensei”, which in Japanese simply means “senior” and recognizes a person's proficiency and skill in an art or profession, such as school teacher, doctor, lawyer, writer, painter, musician, etc.. I particularly like the use of this title in its “Americanized” version: placed BEFORE the name, as in “Sensei Joe”, instead of its proper use AFTER the last name, as in “Shimabuku Sensei”. I have also

encountered this versatile term used as reinforcement for other titles, as in “Master Sensei XYZ” or, even more daringly (and with a multi-cultural flair, mixing Japanese and Korean) as “Sabumnim Sensei XYZ”. The senseless redundancy continues with gems such “Grandmaster Shihan XYZ” (Grandmaster-chief instructor of a dojo) and “Hanshi Grandmaster” (senior master-Grandmaster). Concluding the Japanese variety, is the over-used and misused title “Soke” which many believe to mean “Founder”. However, you will never find an authentic, genuine Japanese founder of a martial art use the term “Soke”, only American and European instructors who claim to have “created” a new martial art use it before or after their names, often in addition to the other titles. So you will find impressive sounding appellations such as “Soke Sensei XYZ” or “Grandmaster XYZ, Soke”. And it does not matter if the martial art in question is Korean, Chinese or even an American concoction…. the word “Soke” is so sexy that it crosses all cultural borders and instantly adds status and credibility to any 25 years old “founder”! The simple truth is that the historical and correct meaning of the word “Soke” is “original artistic tradition of a family or clan” established over generations. But let's not worry about those minor details. The mixing, redundancy and overuse of titles is not associated with any specific martial art or nationality, although American instructors seem to excel at this idiosyncrasy and it is not uncommon to find “Master Sensei” and “Kwanjangnim Grandmaster” who are only 20 or 30 years old. Chinese martial arts, although not totally immune, have, for the most part, escaped the worst of the “titles epidemic”, probably because of cultural differences. Most Chinese martial arts basically use only the title “Sifu”
(teacher) and, in a few cases, the title “Sigung” (teacher of teachers), sometimes Americanized as “Grandmaster”. Very few individuals have been recognized as “Zong Shi” or “Shi Zu”(founder) and those titles are rarely used in the West. But that has not stopped some courageous souls from coming up with ridiculous innovations like “Dan” ranking for Tai-Chi. So it is now possible to see advertisements for “Sensei Master Joe, 7th Dan in Tai-Chi”. Those readers familiar with martial arts from the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand or India can probably cite many interesting instances of misuse and abuse of titles such as “Guru, Guro, Bapak” and others. But I believe that more proof the real existence of this epidemic is not necessary. Personally, I don't care what or how many titles martial arts instructors like to use, even when it becomes utterly ridiculous and bordering on megalomania. I just think that when it comes to titles (specially selfappointed ones), modesty and humility would serve us better if we expect the rest of society to respect us and take us seriously. And, paradoxically, if you want others to take you seriously, I would recommend that you start by adopting one of my life's guiding principles which states: “Never take yourself too seriously and learn how to laugh at your ego”! I believe that if more people followed that advice, there would be much less anxiety and conflict in the World.

They say that in the shade of a big tree, another cannot grow; however, the classics also affirm that wher e a big-sized tr ee reaches, a great shadow shelters. The tree alongside Guro Dave Gould, what sheltered him, was undoubtedly fr om among the biggest that Eskrima has presented us in recent times, Edgar Sulite. His ephemeral existence touched many people and left deep prints in the modern way of understanding this Filipino Art par excellence. In the shade of Sulite, the master who today visits our pages grew and made himself strong. From long and established experience in the Warrior Arts, he found in Lameco Eskrima the perfect expression of all that he had b e e n s e a r c h i n g f o r, a s m u c h f r o m t h e Martial perspective as from the human. His work is consider ed as one of the most advanced and interesting nowadays, the true experts in the matter confirm it, and after seeing his work in our studios, we also confirm it. He has left you a magnificent instructional video on one of his specialties, the knife, and with it this article that we hope you enjoy.
Original Lameco Eskrima There is much more to fighting with a knife than simply learning and demonstrating techniques against a compliant training partner. The absolute necessity in combat always dictates response and our abilities, if adequate, will determine over-all combative effectiveness. Through reality-based training we seek the ability to apply any technique learned with positive effect while under duress, as we are aggressively thrust amidst the pure uncertainty, chaos and confusion of a violent street encounter gone badly awry. In such moments, how well we have trained will either reveal combative truth or through hesitation and neglect we will reveal combative inadequacy. My instructor, Punong Guro Edgar G. Sulite, the founder of Lameco Eskrima, taught us that how we prepared ourselves in training would best reflect how we would actually respond when

forced to defend life and limb in the streets. If we train with weakness and compromise, both will follow us into combat and quickly deliver us to an unacceptable humiliating defeat. For us to keep weakness and compromise from appearing in our ability to defend life and limb, we must first remove them from our training environment. Only then will we be free of their severe limitations and gross restrictions allowing us to more effectively fight with determination and resolve, thereby better meeting our ultimate objective of survival. Punong Guro Sulite would often remind us that there are no “guarantees” in combat, only “fleeting opportunity” at best. Either we will take advantage of those opportunities when they present themselves for as long as they exist to us in real time,

or we will not‌ while facing severe consequences for any hesitation or failure to act. Most people far underestimate the uncertainty of a combative situation gone terribly wrong. There is what you think that you will do in a fight and then there is what you actually end up doing out of necessity, which often times will be quite different than that which you initially expected to do. For this reason, we must develop and maintain the ability to perceive, react, adapt, adjust, locate and relocate any opportunity or unexpected threat faced in combat, until we are able to resolve it and remove any threat dealt within its entirety. For this reason we must remain ever vigilant in our training with survival being the only acceptable objective to be met, at any cost. In the recent DVD (Essential Knife) which I made for Budo International, one of the constant themes for the DVD is to remain constantly aware of your environment and to be able to deploy your weapon (knife) whenever the need unexpectedly arises. This is an area very much neglected by too many systems and learned students today. Most people seem to think that when a violent situation arises, their knife will just suddenly appear in their hand as if by magic and they will fight valiantly against a totally compliant opponent who will never resist any attempt being played out on their life. This could not be further from the truth; when you are attacked by someone with a knife, you will literally have less than a second to respond in earnest as you will be forced to deploy your knife in defense of your life. Only then, with knife in hand, can you begin to effectively fight for your life, hopefully gaining a positive outcome for yourself in your critical time of need. Seriously, what good are knife-fighting techniques if you can not get to your knife when you need it? So if you cannot get to your knife, deploy, and engage in less than a second, then you are too slow and at that time death may be free to claim you. Weapon deployment and retention should be a priority in any weapon-based system and should be trained daily for effect. For example, in Lameco Eskrima, we train weapon deployment and retention from both hands, as Lameco Eskrima is purely an ambidextrous system. Punong Guro Sulite taught us that we have neither a left nor right hand but rather we have two hands equally capable leaving the hand closest to the most immediate threat to inherit and contend with that threat, with survival being the end goal to be met. You should train to deploy your blade from the pocket to the starting position 1000 times, again and again, until it becomes effortless, as repetition is the mother of all skills. In Lameco Eskrima we have 9 starting positions and quickly deploying our blade from the pocket to all of these 9 positions with both hands when the situation requires it is imperative and is part of our daily training. I carry a primary blade and two back-ups on my person at all times. One of the back-ups is smaller than the other two and is to be used in a tighter, more cramped environment, for

example, in a car, phone booth, bathroom stall or on the ground. We were trained to be able to deploy our backup blade immediately once we lost contact with the primary blade due to incidental disarms in combat. So, to train this at any given time, Punong Guro Sulite would suddenly disarm us and he would press on with an aggressive attack forcing us to deploy our back-up blade or pay the consequences for the failure to do so, with time and pressure being very much of essence. Anyone can deploy their blade when given adequate time to do so at leisure. The real test is being able to do so when a 240-lb. man is aggressively charging down on you with the intent of lifting your head from your shoulders in mortal combat. Only then will you be forced to deploy your blade under duress while being made aware of the difficulties and many pressures involved, or not, in which case you may die. When the pressure is on, you have to quickly respond with intention and failure to do so translates to certain death when engaging a knife. One thing is certain, when the pressure is on, most of us will become clumsy and make mistakes in our haste, as reality would have it. To be honest, it is better to make these mistakes in our training environment where the consequences are less severe than on the streets when it matters most and where we will be held accountable for everything that we do, or fail to do. Always remember that anytime we make a mistake in combat, an opportunity is born from it with all players having access to that opportunity. The first one that perceives the opportunity and quickly responds will gain the advantage

leaving the others held accountable for their failure to act in a timely manner. The worse place to be when you realize that something is not working for you is on the street as you are laid out before your attacker leaving him to decide if he will be merciful towards you or brutal. At this time there will be nothing more that you can do as your best efforts were not good enough and now your fate depends on what your opponent decides to do with you. None of us can afford to ever be found in this position at any time, and only the way that we train will determine if this will become our reality or not. When we train as if our lives depended on it, we will fight as if it does… Train daily and train with intention because, should your skills ever be summoned, you will be glad that you made the appropriate preparations and developed adequately. Another aspect that one needs to address in one’s training environment is adversity in training. Forced failure in training is an absolute necessity if you are truly preparing to fight in defense of life and limb. Unless resistance and non-compliance are naturally presented in one’s training environment, they will not be recognized or readily defended against when confronted on the street, and they are sure to appear as a real crisis situation plays itself out. Adversity comes in the form of natural resistance that you would expect from a person fighting for his life. When people get hit, they hit back; no one will stand in front of you and let you hit them without retaliating for real on the street. So you must adopt this reality into your training in order to keep aligned with reality. When I strike my opponent, I have to expect a counter response at any time and as I continue with a desired technique or counter attack I remain aware of any threat that my opponent may unexpectedly unleash in my direction. Remember that we train not to get hit so we must always counter any such attempt in our training environment or for real on the street. We should deal with any such attempt on our person the same way, be it in our training environment or on the street. The truth, like it or not, is that we should all be training reality-based combat in a realistic training environment. This can only develop us to effectively contain realistic situations while

“You can learn to fight and then train to fight, but no experience teaches you to fight better than the actual event itself, assimilating these hard lessons learned, both good and bad, into one’s functional understanding of what combat requires and demands of us, its participants” applying effective solutions as governed by reality, which will best prepare us to deal with the worse side of humanity, a side that is so dark that compromise cannot possibly be a part of it and definitely will not be an option when you are forced to go from idle to operational as the heavy hand of reality comes down hard and fast on your position, demanding that your actions (inactions) define your immediate existence. A place where you will either be forced to embrace life or forced to embrace death, a place where if mistakes are made in combat your life may be the very thing demanded as payment for failure, a place where a second chance can never be an option. Simply put, the way that we train speaks volumes for our abilities, and adversity in training will reveal one’s abilities or one’s incapacity to defend life and limb. An angry person intent on killing you would not attack you in the manner that far too many of us are accustomed to in our training environment. So, why do we waste our time training to respond in a manner that does not meet the requirements of the actual threat faced? The fact is that the opportunities that you would have against a respectful and compliant training partner would not be the same opportunities that would be available to you against a hot-headed maniac who will let nothing short of death itself prevent him from lifting your head in combat. Again, to reiterate, no man will just sit idle and allow another an enormous amount of time to work wonders without retaliating back immediately and for real. So, why do we grant ourselves this unrealistic amount of wasted time to counter uncontested in our training environment in full compliance with our training partner? The training would be more true to life if all involved were not only required but demanded to press any attack forward, as opportunity is revealed to do so and thereby forcing all involved to adapt and adjust to each threat presented in real time, allowing them to restructure their counters on a case by case basis as is dictated accurately by the dire necessity of a real situation. It is not what you do when you are prepared for an attack but what you will do when you are caught off-guard and not prepared which will decide your fate, and your actions at this time will determine if you live or die. Therefore, you have to include the

unexpected attack and counter retaliation at random into your training environment. Only by allowing yourself to develop perception and reaction skills against an unexpected threat in training will you best prepare yourself to defend against it in the street. I feel the urgency to reiterate that it is not what you expect in combat that will take your life but rather that which you do not expect, that is what will spill your life’s blood. In the more advanced levels of combative development, compliant training cannot be a part of what we do. At some point in time, all drills have to be dissolved and we must assimilate the finer points of the technique in combative form and movement. And more importantly, we have to be in a position where we may apply it when life and limb are called upon in a violent street encounter. The beginning student’s primary assignment in training should be to preserve his life, first, neutralize the enemy, second, and thirdly, the student must try and recognize where any required technique might be effectively applied, if at all, always yielding mere technique to combative movement, ability and survival at all times. We learn to be proficient, we train to be competent, and we fight to be vigilant while embracing combative truth as we bring order out of chaos with our abilities. Truth to self, truth in training, and truth in combat will be our formula for success in developing true combative effect. Combative truths can only be revealed to us through the harsh realities of combat where reality clashes up against dire necessity in a dance of life or death. Some say that combative effect cannot be taught; it can only be experienced. There is an old adage in combative circles that states: “There is no ‘way’ to fighting… because fighting is the way.” And only actual fighting experience can best convey lessons learned in this very critical environment. You can learn to fight and then train to fight, but no experience teaches you to fight better than the actual event itself, assimilating the hard lessons learned, both good and bad, into one’s functional understanding of what combat requires and demands of us. Vantage point in combative development is always key in how we will develop combatively. If we only view things the same way as those before us, we will always see what they saw. As we shift vantage point to how we view things, what we perceive will be different and unique, which can only benefit us as warriors in transition. When we change the way we look at things, the things that we look at change. To further illustrate my point, the earth would still be thought to be flat if a few discerning explorers had listened to their critics who insisted that they would sail off of the face of the planet if their warning were not heeded. So, varying vantage point and opinions gives us a healthy perspective so that we may see with clarity that which we may have been blind to before.

Always with the Ochikara, "The Great Strength" (called e-bunto in the Shizen vernacular tongue) or secret wisdom of the ancient Miryoku Japanese shamans, as a backdrop, the author takes us into a world of genuine reflections that are capable to move at once both the reader's heart and head, thus placing him continuously in front of the abyss of the invisible, as the true final frontier of personal and collective consciousness. The spiritual taken not as religion, but as the study of the invisible, was the way of the ancient Miryoku sages to approach the mystery in the framework of a culture as rich as unknown, to which the author has wholeheartedly devoted. Alfredo Tucci, Manager Director to Budo International Publishing Co. and author in the past 30 years of a large number of titles about the Warrior's Way, offers us a set of extraordinary and profound reflections, which can be read individually in no particular order. Each one of them opens up a window to us through which we can take a look at the most varied subjects from an unexpected angle, now dotted with humor now with forcefulness and grandiosity, placing us in front of eternal matters with the view of the one who has just arrived and doesn't agree with the common places in which everyone coincides. We can affirm with conviction that no reader will be indifferent to this book; such is the strength and intensity of its contents. Saying this is saying a lot in a world crowded with collective mangers, interested and behavioral ideologies, manipulators and, in short, spurious interests and mediocrity. It is therefore a text for big souls and intelligent people who are ready to look at life and mystery with the freedom of the most restless and scrutinizing minds, without dogmas, without transient morals, without subterfuges...
