"When we choose co-creation, we break with separation, the original cause of the conflict" Thomas F. Crum "The magic of the conflict" remember a documentary called "to the power of ten". A mosquito bit a man’s hand in Central Park. The camera moved exponentially away from that scene so that we first observed the Park, then the neighborhood, then the city; later the state, the continent; the planet from the atmosphere, from the moon; the solar system, the galaxy, the millions of galaxies, etc… The reverse trip was then made back to the micro-cosmos. Impressive! In my opinion it was a truly modern Mandala even though it is almost a classic now because it was made more than 20 years ago. By means of that visual vertigo I understood the similarities between the Micro and the Macro, and I also became aware of the fact that our sensory limits are no more than an agreement and that beyond our perceptive barrier there are worlds that are inconceivable to us. Where we exist, in reality, things seem solid and time is a perceptible measure, on which we rely everyday. However, time itself is a convention that we adjust and measure according to cycles. Indeed, if it weren’t for those imponderable astronomers, time would be no more than another simple and inexact failure of logic’s "exclusivist" zeal. However, in our hidden conventions there always lies a tiny piece of magic that we manage to save from reason. Reality is imprecise, inexact, evasive, and paradoxical as many times, as it is reasonable, in a world where we not only observe ourselves but in which we also participate. From the point of view of reason and logic, facts have consequences, and every cause has its effect. The Central Park mosquito bites you, your skin feels irritated, and you scratch yourself. However, when the "to the power of ten" cameras move away, time is also compressed and it all becomes relative. The events that seemed separate become synchronous. The mosquito bites you where it should bite you, you hit precisely the right acupuncture point, your stomach burns exactly in the corresponding area and let it be said, and you did eat quite a bit. The word "synchronous" is of Greek origin and it combines the verb to unite and the noun "crono", or time. Synchrony then is a way of perceiving reality beyond the habitual values of reason and logic. It is a vision that goes far beyond the small-minded vision of cause and effect in order to perceive the powerful unity of things and events. People who know about astrology – and there are very few of them – tell me that it is based on synchrony and not on the laws of cause and effect. According to the Muslim tradition, "a leaf doesn't move without the knowledge of Allah". That is to say that Mercury, Mars or Pluto have absolutely no affect

on us; they are too far away for their gravitational pull to alter us in any substantial way, or for their light to dazzle us or for their movement to unbalance us. However, the astrologers (excommunicated by the Christian church, although you may not believe this!) maintain that studying their movements and reading them from a synchronous perspective using their interpretive techniques will enable us, as if we were looking at ourselves in a mirror, to understand what is happening in our lives from a more objective, more passionless perspective. It would be as if we were looking through a "to the power of ten" camera, where the dance of the spheres marks some energy tempo with longer cycles than those of the crickets, but no less certain. Synchrony is a vision of the world that is nearest to Unity than to duality. The great Budo Masters reached states of awareness where this synchrony was constant. Ueshiba enunciated it this way: "When somebody decides to tie me up, he has already lost, because he isn’t attacking me, he’s attacking the whole universe". Breaking the cause and effect vision allows a unifying action to intervene. Tori and Uke are One in conscious action of one of the parts that reestablishes Unity. There is no action-reaction; rather there is a perfect and sublime synergy that enables us to be "joined in time." The BBC did a documentary about a prodigious experiment. It was about a dog that always knew when her owner would return home. To check this, they invited the lady to go for a walk without telling her when they would return, so she was not able to interact with her dog in some way, nor was she able to give some kind of subconscious signal to the animal. The reporter went out of the house with the animal’s owner carrying a camera that was synchronized with another one installed in the house and focused on the dog. They went out for a walk and then they went shopping. At no time did they tell the lady when or from where they would decide to return home. At the exact instant that the decision to return home was communicated to her, the dog woke up from her nap, got up and lay down next to the door to wait for her owner. It seems clear that the unilateral development of a Being's conscience has left us without some of the abilities that connect us to the Universe in a special and subtle way, even though it has given us predominance as an absolutely unique species. Behind our veil of reason and logic, other forms of perceiving the Universe latently lie in wait for our daily

When the Martial Arts connect us to our very essence (our body, our respiration, our primary emotions, fear, aggressiveness, power struggles and so on), they open new paths of understanding so that we might live in a much more complete way. Their practice is and should be a constant form of questioning the way we look at our lives and ourselves. The person who doesn't recognize the importance of this as one of the most significant contributions to modern man, and who insists on reducing his practice exclusively to one of the many options that exist (sports, shows, defense, etc) thereby renounces his essential potential, and he loses the lion’s share of the matter. It is like using a Rolls Royce to plow a field, or decorating a stable with a Velázquez, or rinsing your mouth with a 30 year old Cardhu. When the camera offers us perspective and distance, we can see the world for what it is: the one Uni-verse, the One in movement, where beyond space and time and beyond our perceptive barriers, synchrony opens a door for us towards a new awareness, the awareness of being One with everything, which is the highest state of wisdom.

STRUCTURE Every Martial Art has a specific structure that makes it work. In fact, to understand any Martial Art, the first thing that we have to look at is its structure. We can think about it as the operating base from which are carried out the attacks and defenses of the Art in par ticular. The structure is the base, the pillar on which sustains and grows the Art itself; it's the root where the branches of the Art originate. Understanding an Art involves understanding its structure. Bruce Lee said that in order to defend yourself against another Art, you didn't need to learn it; it was enough knowing its way of attacking. The attack system is the means whereby the attack shifts from point A (the attacker) to point B (the defender).

o a large extent, this attack system is based on the particular structure of the attacker's Art, while the defender bases his defense on the structure of his own Art. One of the style problems, as Bruce Lee saw it, was that most students could only understand things from the perspective of their own style, which was based on its particular structure. To understand this concept it's necessary to review the history briefly. When I taught Kung-Fu in the late 60's, the style was

everything. If you practiced Kempo, you didn't practice Karate or Kung-Fu, you only practiced with fellow students of the same style. The only time you saw another style was when attending or participating in an open Karate tournament, but even then there were specific rules that made the difference among styles somewhat smaller. In addition, these tournaments were also limited because there was no contact. In the Ed Parker's International annual Karate tournament there were competing several Japanese, Chinese and Korean styles.

Their methods of attack and defense were based on their structure, which somewhat limited them just as well. I attended this tournament every year because my students competed there, so I could see the structure in action, just the way it was. Chuck Norris, competitor of a Korean style, had a fighting position that allowed him to kick effectively, being able at the same time to throw punches, since the stance was neither too low nor too close. Joe Lewis, on his part, used a lower horse stance that limited his attacks, especially with the front hand and the advanced foot, but also provided a good defense. So a karateka of the Shotokan style would assume a low frontal stance that provided him a solid base for linear attacks, such as a straight punch or a direct back kick, and so on. As we see, their attack systems relied heavily on their structures. Part of Bruce Lee's genius was to observe an Art and to understand its structure and limitations. Back in the '60s and '70s it was very difficult that someone could perceive the limits of the structures, because the rules of contactless tournaments did not allow anyone to take advantage of the possible weaknesses of the structure of the adversary. Although leg sweeping was allowed, for example, you couldn't kick the leg. When Full-Contact encounters began, things changed. The first to go on stage was Kick-Boxing. Fighters quickly discovered that their Karate punches were not as effective with the boxing gloves on, so they turned to boxing coaches for help. Kick-Boxing became a mix of Karate kicks and boxing punches, although kicking the leg when sweeping was still banned. When kicks to the legs were added to Kick-Boxing in Japan, we witnessed the birth of Thai Boxing. Low horse stances no longer worked. This was clearly demonstrated when Hong Kong sent 5 of their best fighters to Thailand to compete against 5 Thai fighters. No Kung-Fu practitioner lasted more than one round.

Before all this happened, Bruce Lee had already transformed his Art. The difference was that he did it ten years earlier than the others. Bruce had discovered in a fight that his Wing Chun was much too limited. He had the feeling that there existed some combat universal truths that could only be discovered going beyond the limits of the style itself. He wanted to craft a structure based on mobility, and lower positions had proved to be too limited. He could see someone like Muhammad Ali move and control the distance to such an extent that he always seemed to stand out of range of his adversary. So Bruce developed a modified Boxing stance, from which he could easily punch and kick. He sought to expand the angles of attack offered by Wing Chun, so he added to his Art a basic Boxing repertoire. When he realized that his jab with the finger could be used in the same way as the Fencing foil, he added many principles of Western Fencing and called his Art "Jeet Kune Do" (lit. "The Form of the Fist that Intercepts"). He took the name from the theory of Fencing, since swordsmen believe that the most effective method of facing an attack is to intercept it before it's completely launched. The next big change came along with the start of No Holds Barred encounters such as the UFC. Kick-Boxing practitioners soon discovered that they had few resources with which to defend themselves when they were thrown to the canvas or when they were trying to get back on their feet. So they realized that they needed to learn Grappling if they were to survive in the ring. Later, it was Grappling practitioners who discovered that they needed to learn some punches and kicks if they wanted to survive in the ring, and that's how we got to Mixed Martial Arts. Nearly all the fighters we see today in the ring are a blend of different Arts, such as Grappling, Thai Boxing and Western Boxing. At present, one of the most popular fighting systems is called Mixed Martial Arts, and basically consists of a mixture of Grappling and fighting systems in standing position. The question is how do we mix Martial Arts? How can we blend Martial Arts with different structures? Do we try to learn all the structures to then pass from structure to structure or we simply take a structure and then we add whatever fits in it? Jeet Kune Do is an example of the latter method. It consists of a structure that has been added other things that fit. We, the "Wednesday Evening Group", tried to do the same by researching other Arts. First, we searched the strong and weak points of the JKD we teach. The main weak point we found is

Jeet Kune Do that we practiced very little Grappling, so we needed to know the attacking ways of grapplers and how defend ourselves against them. We made the decision that we needed to learn how to survive on the street and not in the ring. We focused on avoiding being taken to the ground, but in case this happened, we had to be able to get up as soon as possible. I was lucky enough to practice with some of the best Grappling practitioners: Larry Hartsell, Mark McFann and Eric Paulson. Our group had the great good fortune of training with professionals as Bert Poe, with a direct approach to the fight and to Grappling, and who was interested in ending the fight as soon as possible. We also worked out with a great college Freestyle wrestler and we are currently training with an expert on Greco-Roman wrestling. A few years ago, Lloyd Kennedy (the Walking Grappling Encyclopedia) began attending our Wednesday night class and sharing his knowledge with us. We started using a basic JKD training method called "Before, During and After", whose interpretation is as follows: 1. BEFORE: it means to observe the distance that the attacker is from us and see how the structure of his Art leads him to do Grappling with us. 2. DURING: it means that he is moving towards us; or that he is doing Grappling to us in the Greco-Roman Wrestling style; or he is applying to us a high grip, single or double, with his leg; or a single low grip. 3. AFTER: it means that he's grabbed us and that, either he wants to take us to the ground or he's going to apply an arm lock or a strangulation to us; or even he's already taken us to the ground. Then we'll analyze if we have the tools to deal with each of the attacks. If not, we will try to find one by observing the rules that each type of Grappling practitioner uses, in order to find some weak point in what they are accustomed to do. We will center in how the structure of his Art is taught. Is he trying to do a single low throwing technique with his leg, impeding us an attack to the eyes, or is he offering us his eyes on executing a high throwing technique with the leg? Another example is when a good Jiu-Jitsu practitioner takes us to the ground and tries to establish a base from which to continue the attack, in which case we will figure out the way to obstruct his base and try to get back on our feet. We study other Arts for two basic reasons: first to know if we have the tools to defend ourselves against them (looking at their structure and attack system), and second to observe them carefully in order to discover what they can offer to our own Art (something our system might lack or could help us improve). Of course it is not a question of adding something for the sake of doing so. We are not looking for the 47th way to deal with the left hand of a boxer, but a better way of doing things. A good example of this is our understanding of Thai Boxing.

Jeet Kune Do STANCE: We teach 3 different stances in our version of JKD. The first is the natural stance, standing in a neutral posture, with most of the weight resting on the back leg and hands raised in a nonthreatening position. We do not want to get in position from the first moment that an attack can occur, for the following reasons: 1. First, we try to calm the situation by appearing passive. In this way, if we are attacked, witnesses will blame the aggressor. 2. We always have to consider what the witnesses can think about the situation, because it can be important if it ends up in a Court hearing. Although Bruce Lee wrote many personal notes about the using of knees and elbows in combat, he didn't teach his students much of that before he died. We thought it would be good to know more, and what better way of learning about it than Thai Boxing which uses the knees and the elbows in all its full contact encounters? When we started working on that facet of Thai Boxing we quickly learned that it fit into the basic structure of our stance, which resembles that of a boxer, but a bit more open than the width of the shoulders. We also believed that the Thai Boxing's roundhouse back kick was highly valuable because of its tremendous power. The first time Bob Bremer saw us practicing that kick he warned us: "No doubt it's a great kick, but not in the initial move." And he was right because the structure of Thai Boxing is different from that of JKD and this kick is not so effective in the first move. But allow me to explain it to you. The Thai boxer remains with the shoulders open and the toes of the rear foot are nearly on par with the heel of the front foot. This close posture allows him to kick the opponent's front leg without being too easy to perceive, since the kick doesn't have much travel. With the JKD basic stance, the kick is very easily perceived. Using it in the ring or on the street as the first movement of an attack would be an invitation to counterattack. We have to use it starting from the Thai Boxing basic structure. Many JKD students do so or make the mistake of applying it parting from the JKD structure; we decided to do everything starting from the structure of JKD and we used the Thai Boxing round back kick, "but never in the initial movement". Do not forget that in order to understand the Art you practice (or any other), you have to look at its basic structure, as this is the basis for understanding whatever Art.

Jeet Kune Do Maybe it's the fact of having been a teacher during all his life, activity from which he is retired, or because of his personal curiosity and intelligence, the truth is that Tim Tackett is one of the persons who has most successfully reflected on and especially transmitted that unfinished, personal and syncretic set that Bruce Lee bequeathed us, under the heading of Jeet Kune Do. It's a pleasure for us to bring him today to the front page of our magazine and share part of his knowledge, in this case an extract of his book Jeet Kune Do, published by our publishing company and available in digital format in several languages. We have also wanted to do this short interview with him, talking to the "old teacher" is always interesting. Do not miss it! Alfredo Tucci INTERVIEW Budo International: Is the "Old Teacher" still active? Tim Tackett: I'm retired from traveling and doing seminars. I'm 76 now. I really have a good retirement from my high school teacher career, so I don't need to do anything. Money was never a purpose of my JKD teaching. My instructors are more than capable to move on. Budo International: We miss many classic instructors of Bruce Lee's second generation. What do you think is the legacy of Bruce Lee today? Tim Tackett: Really, there are no too many of the former ones left. Last month we lost Richard Bustillo, Pete Jacobs, and Join Sewell. The picture I sent you was from Jim and me. I don't have much confidence about the future of JKD as Bruce taught it. We are doing it that way, but our group is

not too big and we have never tried to expand it simply by taking anyone as a Master. We always try to keep the quality high by keeping the quantity down Budo International: What can we expect for the future of JKD? Tim Tackett: Right now JKD's future is in the air. It depends on how far the second and third generations reach. Right now I do not see much to feel optimistic about the future of JKD. Budo International: How do you see the MMA current panorama in the world? Tim Tackett: I've had the opportunity to work with some of the best MMA fighters, and I have discovered that there is a lot of what we teach that can lead to the ring. Some MMA people depress me because of their using of drugs to improve performance and by their attitude. Budo International: How do you feel about all these years of collaboration with Budo International? Tim Tackett: I've always enjoyed working with Budo International. It is a quality organization and we appreciate our relationship as well as friendship.

Jeet Kune Do On the death of one of the all-time greats of JKD, and in tribute to him, we repeat below an interview with the Master conducted in 2002 for our magazine. Tim Tackett, his lifetime friend and companion, has kindly provided us with some ancient and recent images of the late Master Bustillo that complete this presentation. Jeet Kune Do Interviewing a historical figure of JKD We welcome one of the key names of JKD, Richard Bustillo. It is always a pleasure having him on our pages. His commentaries on the Art of Sijo Bruce Lee always leave a powerful "flavor" for the students of the "style of no-style" who are eager to receive information. One of these days we hope to offer you "more than just words" of this outstanding Master. BUDO INTERNATIONAL: Why do you think people get involved with martial arts now, as opposed to the early days before?

R. B.: Today, the public has an opportunity to practice a variety of martial arts disciplines for many different reasons. Many train in martial arts for self defense purposes. Others exercise for mental health and physical fitness. Some like the meditation, discipline, coordination,and philosophies behind various martial arts. There are no other trades that will enhance all of these qualities. Martial arts were very secretive during my early years. There were no commercial martial art schools opened to the public. I'd like to think that it was Bruce Lee who broke the barriers to martial arts. Mas Oyama was another who shared his martial arts skill worldwide. They have raised the martial arts standards

Jeet Kune Do to another level so others can learn about martial arts as it is today. B. I.: Which of your martial arts activities is the one that you enjoy best and why? R. B.: I like the artistic arts. However, I love the combative arts the best. In my daily practice of the long range weaponry of Kali and Doe Pares Eskimo, to the middle ranges of striking with Boxing and May Thai, and the grappling range of Wrestling and Jujitsu, I favor Boxing the best. Boxing is also the world's favorite because of the highest purse paid to martial arts athletes. B. I.: What is really your proudest and your worst moments in your martial art achievement? R. B.: I have had many proud moments in my martial arts achievements. This is just a few to mention. Being promo-

ted and given the title Grand Master by the legendary "Cacoy" Canete was a proud moment for me. Representing the USA as the head coach for the First USA Eskrima Team at a motorcade parade in the Philippines is another proud moment. Seeing the thousands of cheering Filipinos brought tears to my eyes and joy to my heart. I wished that my partner Dan Inosanto were there to share in this joyous occasion.Marching in the opening ceremonies of the World Police and Fireman's Game as a boxing coach, in Melbourne Australia and in Calgary, Canada made me feel very patriotic and proud.Coaching my students to win championships in Eskrima,Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling and Jujitsu continues to make me feel very proud. My first big disappointment and embarrassment was at the martial arts exhibition in Mexico City's Olympic Auditorium.I dropped my weapon during my performance in front of thousands of spectators. Another

Jeet Kune Do embarrassment was at my former Kajukenbo instructor Sid Asunsion's Memorial Tournament. I performed an exhibition with a hangover, but let's not go into this one. B. I.: How would you define an ideal martial artist? R. B.: There are many types of martial artists. However, there are only a very few true martial artists such as Bruce Lee, Mas Oyama, Cacoy Canete, Mifune, Kano, et cetera.These true martial artists live martial arts twenty four hours daily. Their lives evolve around martial arts. Their vacations, amusements, entertainment and work are totally martial arts. Then there are some that profess to be a martial artist through self-promotion. These charlatans may fool some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all the time. My ideal martial artist is like me.

Martial arts are a very big part of my life. However, I also enjoy life.I make it a point to take advantage of living my life to the fullest while I'm on this earth.I meditate while scuba diving, concentrate while splitting the highway white lines on my Harley Davidson, relaxing on cruise ship trips every other year,and listening to musical shows and concerts. B. I.: How do you face or handle people with a negative attitude who want to join your school? R. B.: I'm a good judge of character.Still, a few undesirables have slipped by me. If they are not following the Academy's rules and regulations, I will knock him or her out. No! I'm joking.In all my years of teaching, I have had to ask only one person to leave the Academy until he adjusted his attitude. The others have left on their own because of their lack of discipline from the hard training that they can't handle.

B. I.: What are your best memories of Bruce Lee? R. B.: I have many fond memories of Bruce Lee. Once, Bruce asked me to pick him up to buy Tiger brand jogging shoes. As I was smoking a cigarette in the car while driving Bruce to buy the jogging shoe, Bruce said to me,"See all that brown/yellowish smog in the horizon." I said "yeah." "That's what is on your lungs. Your smoking is coating your lungs. You have to master your habits, and not let your habits master you." I quit smoking when Bruce told me to master my bad habits. Another favorite memory of Bruce happened at his house. While Bruce and I were in his library, I was exploring his martial arts books stacked neatly on the book shelves

along the 4 walls. Bruce asked me if I had his book, which he wrote, the Philosophy of Gung Fu. I told him that I did not have his book but that I would be buying one soon. Bruce said, "Here, take my last book". I rejected his offer of giving me his last book because it was the only one that he had and he should keep it. He said, "Okay". He then said, "Here take my last copy" and signed it for me. For over twenty years, I have been telling people what a nice man Bruce Lee was for giving me his last book. One day, when I was telling everyone at a gathering about how nice Bruce was, Linda Lee said that Bruce had a trunk full of those books, and that Bruce played this same prank on everybody.

Jeet Kune Do B. I.: How would you define Jeet Kune Do? R. B.: Jeet Kune Do literally means "the way of the intercepting Fist". I have used this term to also mean intercepting a weapon strike,a kick or punch, and a grappling hold. A philosophy of JKD is to be your own best teacher, to evolve and develop to a higher level and not be limited or bound, but to be a liberated individual free from restrictions. Bruce Lee's four personal combative ranges are the kicking range, the striking range, the trapping range and the grappling range. I have developed my JKD to 3 combative ranges:The Kali/Eskrima weapon range, the Boxing/Muay Thai striking Range, and the Wrestling/Jujitsu grappling range. We spar to test one's skill in different ranges. My 3 IMB ranges are enhanced by

the martial art principles, concepts, theories, and training methods of Bruce Lee. Jeet Kune Do emphasizes that "The individual is more important than any established system or style." B. I.: As the Chairman, how are things actually going with the Bruce Lee Educational Foundation? R. B.: You are the first to know that I have resigned my position as Chairman for many reasons. During a flight back from conducting a seminar on February 10th, I decided to cut back on a few of my activities. Chairman of the BLEF is one of my cut backs. My original reason for becoming a founding board member was because of Linda Lee's request for me to in 1995.

Since Linda's retirement, things have changed. The Concord Moon Company was developed to oversee the Bruce Lee Estate. Five original board members have also resigned for personal reasons. Change is inevitable. Part of the reason for my resignation is due to Concord Moon's restrictions and approvals. Anything that the Chairman and the Nucleus do which uses Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, and Bruce Lee's name and likeness must be approved by Concord Moon. The legal team of Concord Moon has restricted my freedom to help in developing the BLEF for the better. At the present time I cannot lead, nor will I follow any organizations. I will continue to exercise my Jeet Kune Do belief on Personal Liberation. Snake (č&#x203A;&#x2021;) The techniques of the snake increase vitality and internal power. Its techniques are based on the philosophy of the element water. The snake is always moving. It uses the power of the Qi for fast and punctual strikes with the fingers to the opponentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; weak spots or soft parts of the body. The techniques of the snake style are very accurate and lesser ferocious. It is very important to imitate the smooth and flexible movements of the snake. The snake moves easily but its strikes are direct and fast, at which the stretched fingers, symbolizing the head or the poisonous teeth, hit.

Leopard (čąš) The techniques of the leopard train speed, coordination and endurance. They are based on the philosophy of the element metal and are useful in close combat. The leopard fights powerful and on short distance. In contrast to the tiger using its immense power to attack, the leopard is more agile and explosive. Its fast reaction and agility make the leopard a fearsome hunter in nature. Its attacks are unexpected and fast as lightning. On the other hand itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s able to pull back quickly by jumping and dodging. The leopard is smaller than the tiger and therefore not as strong. For your ability to fight, quickness is one of the key factors too. Many quick, short and aggressive attacks hit the opponent like a hail of bullets making blocks or counter strikes almost impossible.

KAJUKENBO - THE FOUNDATION OF AN ART In these times, every day new Combat or SelfDefense systems are created. These new arts are called into question by the majority of Masters, as if it were not possible because everything had been already done. The truth is that many of these new styles lack a rational foundation, as they are a mere copy and additions of other systems with an a m p l y p r o v e n c r e d i b i l i t y, a n d w h a t i s m o r e important, many of their Founders lack an adequate martial knowledge - let's call so -, because they haven't trained long enough, and I would even go so far as to say that some of them lack the most basic knowledge and the right martial aptitude. t this point, we will make reference and review of our art / system: the Kajukenbo. Who were the Founders of this Art and what knowledge did they have in the field of Martial Arts, as to reach the conclusion that they needed to create something different and more focused self-defense or street fighting? Well, since in previous articles we have already discussed some aspects about the Founders and their beginnings, today we will see the reasoning and self-criticism of what concerns us. It is said that the 5 men who formed the Kajukenbo were great fighters, but here is where we begin to see a bit the reality: How old were those 5 boys? Were they already great specialists or they were in their beginnings and they didn't still master the arts they practiced? If so, they were far from being great experts at the time. What is undeniable is that all of them felt they were lacking something in their training, so they decided to get together and put into practice exchanges, and that's where sprung up the need to carve out their own place and create something new, so they started testing their techniques in person and in streets fights in the most dangerous Hawaiian

neighborhoods and with the highest levels of delinquency, as they tell us in their stories. In the Kajukenbo's first workout sessions, the doors of the training hall remained locked so that no student could leave till the class was over; blood and injuries were common in those days. Who granted them the title of Grand Masters? Someone very important named "TIME", and the students who began to attend the first training sessions, and later spread the Art all over the world. Then people verified its effectiveness and forcefulness, something that has always been characteristic of the Kajukenbo: few techniques but highly effective, in order to finish the opponent as soon as possible and bring a swift end to any confrontation in whatever situation. Remember the maxim of art: "Train hard to be hard," we all know that in the Dojo we must workout hard so that if it comes a moment in which our life is in danger, we can be able to successfully exit the confrontation. So I think we should give opportunities to all new systems, because ultimately, time is the one that passes sentence and not the Grand Masters and Instructors who begin to criticize those systems and their founders, without knowing their background and how their styles began, because there is nothing pure that remains unchanged with time; each Master usually adapts the Art to himself and discards what he doesn't like or is not able to master. Let's reflect on this: is today Okinawan Karate like 50 years ago? Of course no, otherwise, how can you explain, for example, that pupils of the same Master have different versions from the same Katas? Why do they name them differently? Everyone wants to improve or advance in his or her system, which on the other hand is something logical; it's called evolution and it reaches everything and everybody; we can practice the basics, principles, customs and history, but as generations pass by, everything changes. You just need to see how many variants exist nowadays in Kajukenbo and new versions continue to appear now and then. Simply observe the many masters who claim to be teaching the

Emperado / Traditional method, and surely you will see that they do not resemble each other at all, for they don't maintain these bases and then because of the logical evolution, they simply add to their will and eliminate the bases, arguing that today that no longer serves, as if a kick or a punch that impacts accurately and in the correct place today was different than 20 or 40 years ago. Well, may be today our face is stronger than before, or our intimate parts are insensible, or even the pants and jackets of today are reinforced against blows, but, gentlemen, human anatomy continues being the same and we still have two legs, two arms, one head, etc. Let us be logical and give credit to whoever has it and respect to everyone, for ultimately, who is in possession of the absolute truth? As for me and my Sifu SGM Cherry Ortega, we maintain the tradition and the bases, but also the evolution of the Art of Kajukenbo and the Kajukenbo Kosho Ryu.

The Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak is a system based on both weapons and empty hands at the same time. Yohanna Alonso: A woman with grace, power, intelligence, sex appeal and yes the 2017 Reigning World Muay Thai Champion. Oh and how could I forget also a Sargent in the Guardia de Civil, Spain. I recently caught up with her after witnessing her phenomenal World Title fight in Thailand. And according to Yohanna her final fight. Interview by GM Vincent Lyn

Beautiful and Dangerous Vincent: So might as well start at the very beginning and tell everyone where you were born and grew up? Yohanna: Well, I was born in Gijón (Asturias), a city located in the North of Spain, very pretty and with beach. Both my parents are from León (Castilla y León) a city located in the North also under Gijón, a beautiful town with mountains and a national park protected from nature. It's small but a spectacular city. So I’m raised between both cities. Vincent: Did you start showing a predilection for martial arts right away at a young age? Yohanna: Yes, when I was a little girl. I was attracted to action movies and Martial Arts, but my father would not let me train. He said that it was for boys so I trained in rhythmic gymnastics and my brother trained Jiu Jitsu and Leonese (a typical fighting style of this city) that begins with grip to the belt and can´t be released. Similar to a form of Sambo wrestling. So I got to train and study with him at home. Vincent: How old were you? Yohanna: I was 17 years old when my father agreed to change the rhythmic gymnastics practice for a pair of boxing gloves.

Vincent: Can you give our readers some background on what inspired you to take up martial arts? Yohanna: The first thing was seeing my brother training. It filled me with the passion and desire and when I changed cities (Gijón-León) I suffered a bit of harassment and needed to learn to defend myself. Not because I used it, buy it gave me a sense of security and self-empowerment in myself. This gave me a strong resilience and tenacity and made my problems of insecurity go away. Vincent: What took you from Spain all the way to Thailand? Yohanna: My Master, Lek Anda and the National coach Arturo Fernandez. My sports curriculum (my previous fights and a second place finish against Portugal) and the desire and enthusiasm for my dreams of becoming a true and real champion.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have always wanted to be a police officer since I was a child, helping people and bringing justice to making a difference in societyâ&#x20AC;?

Beautiful and Dangerous Vincent: I also understand that you're a Sargent with the Guardia Civil in Spain. How did that all happen? Yohanna: I have always wanted to be a police officer since I was a child, helping people and bringing justice to making a difference in society. Vincent: Getting back to your fighting skills. What has been your biggest challenge thus far? Yohanna: My biggest fight, has been one I lost, the fight against cancer that took my mother. And sporadically has been to go to Thailand to the cradle of Muay Thai to fight against Thai champions. But I will go back and I will bring the World Championship Belt home to Spain. Then I will be able to stop competing (and move my residence to New York ;-) Vincent: Do you think in a mostly male dominated sport that females are treated unfairly? Yohanna: Yes, I know that it is dominated by men. But perhaps because we are looked at as being less feminine. It might also be a handicap that contact sports are very aggressive and the idea of two women trying to pummel each other is

upsetting to a lot of folks. Slowly though things have changed and being strong and secure females we do have a big stake in contact sports and at the same time deserve the same respect as men! Vincent: I know that for all the training and pain you go through as a world class professional competitor why is the money so little? Especially when I know you train just as hard as any other world class professional athlete and yet some of these athletes make so much money? Yohanna: The reality is so much effort and so little reward in terms of monetary gain. Most of the fighters do it for self satisfaction and personal growth, because the economic reward is minimal. ItÂ´s not just that you have great inequality and clearly its abysmal compared to other professional world class athletes. But with other athletes the costs incurred encompass the preparation of a fighter (gym, coach, nutrition, special food, sports psychologist. The list goes on and on and we have to pay most of this out of our own pockets. But in the end no matter I will continue to fight for my dreams.

Vincent: So seeing as you don't do it for the money then why put yourself through all that at the chance of getting seriously injured? Yohanna: Wellâ&#x20AC;Ś it's that feeling you have when you get into the ring and everything you have spent months on preparing. The blood , sweat and tears and finally culminates into this final showdown to see who will rise to the occasion. I can't really explain it. Every fighter goes through a similar experience and unless you've really felt that natural high you will never know. It's a mixture of fear, adrenaline, tension, aggressiveness, wanting to demonstrate what you know and what you can do. ItÂ´s very difficult to express all that. I am very conscience of climbing into the ring and knowing full well how things can turn. But every second and minute is worth it. I also know that nothing lasts forever and everything must run its course. At some point in the not to distant future I will need to stop competing and retire from professional Muay Thai. The skill is knowing when to do it as every fighters ego can get in the way and they all think they have one more good fight left in them. And many have made that mistake. Vincent: Well I have the utmost respect for your love and passion of the sport. God Bless. Yohanna: Thank you, any contact sport or martial art is good for the mind, body and spirit. It contributes in so many ways, things we sometimes don't even realize until we mature as an adult. They will become forever indispensable in your life. Respect to all martial artists and athletes. Thank you for your blessings. Vincent: After hundreds of hours of training and prepping for a fight. What are you going through mentally? Yohanna: Wow, good question and very difficult to answer. When I fight I try to clear my mind of all thoughts like erasing the mechanism. To hear nothing but only my Master and think of my mother before entering the ring. I think many athletes and artists put a tremendous amount of pressure on themselves as I do. ItÂ´s never quite enough and I demand more of myself. I realize how much I have to suffer in order to gain respect and greatness.

Beautiful and Dangerous Vincent: I personally witnessed your recent World Title win against the Thai Champion Farung Srithong in Ayuttaya, Thailand. First of all I want to personally congratulate you. You were amazing. How does it feel knowing that you are the current reigning world champion? Yohanna: I feel extremely happy for the work I've done and of course proud of my team and Teacher. But it doesn't change my life at all. I just stay focused on success in the work of my charities, such as cancer and battered women. These are my goals. We must always give back in some way. Vincent: I also understand that you gave your winning prize money away to your opponent Farung Srithong? Can I ask why you did that? Please tell me you did keep your World Champion Belt? Yohanna: I gave her the prize money because I do not fight for money. Anyway she needs it much more than me being that their life is very hard in Thailand. I am fortunate because I have my career and I'm very proud to be a part of the police force. But ... the championship belt is mine :) Vincent: How does it feel to win and hear the crowd cheering your name? Yohanna: ItÂ´s an incredible sensation, I get goose bumps all over even my hair gets spiky and I feel like crying. Vincent: What is your current record as a Pro-Fighter?

Yohanna: Yes, the offer is for a one year contract to work in advertising, so I am very happy with the offer. I'm really excited. Vincent: How does all this make you feel the adulation and the big question is will you take the offer? Yohanna: It is not flattery what I feel, I feel like this is a great offer but I also must continue growing as a professional and as a person. Not everyone has this kind of opportunity

Vincent: Who has been the biggest inspirations in your life? Yohanna: My mother, no doubt. I wish she were with me and I could continue to learn from her. Vincent: Well you can be sure she is smiling right now and very proud of you. Looking forward - What is in Yohanna Alonso's future? Yohanna: In the short term in May later this year the Bricpol Championship of Spain in Europe. A huge wish I have is to create a school for homeless people with families with dysfunctional issues. Also to focus on the youth who can spend their time training and discovering the beauty of the sport and hopefully to find within themselves a passion and reason to discover wonder that this life has to offer. I love helping those who can not help themselves. Vincent: So I'm sure everyone wants to know. Now that you're the 2017 World Muay Thai Champion, is this really your last fight and why? Yohanna: I've given it a lot of thought and come to the realization that I do not feel it is worth the physical and mental toll it has taken on me. But only time will tell. Either way my future is bright and I welcome it with open arms.

Beautiful and Dangerous Vincent: Lastly what advice can you give the youth on achieving their dreams and are there any secret ingredients that can help one stay so focused as you have been your entire life? Yohanna: That they believe in what they do, that they do no conform and yet fight for their dreams and aspirations every day of their life. And although in life we always will be criticized by others and many times be told you can't do it. But to use it as ammunition and change it into power in a positive way. Use those comments and grow, aspire, train, train and.. re-train!

Fighting and killing for money was not honorable and fighting for entertainment was forced upon slaves who fought for their freedom. Then why in the modern world, where we pride ourselves in our advances in civilization, in technology, in culture, in morality, through higher intellect and consciousness, furthering ourselves from the need of God as we profess to be gods; where we have rid ourselves of Kings and in itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s place with ordinary ungodly rulers, why should we continue to fight and kill, to hurt and maim each other as though we were slaves?

The answer is in plain sight, but often hard to accept as we fabricate grand causes and delusions to justify our choices. We have replaced God with money and money is our new god. We have always been slaves, and in the past by opposing Kings; today we are slaves to money and to the popular culture who thirsts for violence and big companies who profit from them. The question is who and more importantly who do you want your master to be? The True Way of the Warrior is not for sport, but to fight for a cause, to die in service, to sacrifice oneself for others. It is not for fame or fortune, but to defend the righteous and protect the weak. It is not to prove that you are the best and that you are better than others, but how you can serve to better humanity. And, even if you wanted to do that, surely you can do it in other ways than to beat

another person senseless, knocking them out in a pool of their own blood. No the Warrior’s Path is a heroic journey with the lingering question: can I die to save another’s life when the time comes? The knowledge of fighting, martial arts is like carrying a weapon and must only be used to defend and should not be used in contests of ego and pride. The free sparring and matches exist so that we can practice our techniques in a dynamic expression, learning proper responses to different threats, speed and timing, precision and accuracy, and effective delivery as well as cultivating and maintaining one’s acuteness and spirit. We can accomplish this without having to exercise full-contact where the goal is to injure, incapacitate, render unconscious and prevent the opponent from being able to continue to fight in order to hone our skills. Anyone can be knocked out, and no one is invincible; one proper strike to the right point can render anyone unconscious. In fact, part of the training for full contact is learning how to take a hit and with this training you can receive some blows when you’re prepared, but certainly it does not guarantee that one can take a surprise attack when you’re not ready. The other negative outcome of full-contact fighting for the sake of self-glory, money, and/or entertainment as it relates to the Warrior’s Path is the inflation of the ego and the unstoppable arrogance of invincibility. A warrior’s or for that matter man’s most valuable trait is loyalty. As one continues to win and begin to develop a false sense of pride and self-worth, they grow dangerously self-centered and narcissistic only caring for themselves, forgetting that the true noble path is in service and self-sacrifice. For a warrior it is not how many medals, trophies, or prize money that they have won that matters as no one is undefeatable or invincible, but how many lives that they helped and/or saved. And, in ancient times warriors were taken care of by the Kingdom with land and servants to provide livelihood for the rest of their days. Today, our soldiers fight not for God and are asked to murder and face unimaginable horrors only to return to a minimal pay, no real job, no gratitude, and expected to live sanely with the general population. The popularity and lucre of MMA and many sports alike throughout the world has heightened the always-prevalent dark underbelly of full-contact sports. There are many places around the world where they are having full-contact bouts for children, boys and girls, where the adult spectators make side bets and gamble. The only ones to lose here are the children as though they are animals for fighting like dogs and roosters. Globally, we consider animal fighting to be inhumane and yet we do nothing when it comes to children fighting in full-contact arena.

And, of course there are those wicked people, who manipulate, use, and abuse the fighters in impoverished lives for the sake of profit and gambling, much like prostitution. As Martial Artists, we must become vigilant and understand for what true purpose we practice and teach the arts. In Hwa Rang Do we have made a conscious decision not to allow for full-contact fighting. We have deeply contemplated on the idea and we fully believe that it is not in the best interest of our students to have the mind set that they must fight to injure, harm, incapacitate, render unconscious their fellow brothers and sisters in a ring to prove that they are better. We are most interested in creating values and traits within human beings, which promote cooperation and peace rather than competition and violence. Our perception of competition is founded on the idea of cooperation; we strive to better ourselves so that we can challenge and motivate others to become better. Even when we win a match, a tournament, we do not prance, dance, and glorify ourselves in victory, but rather we practice humility and respect for our opponent as we are all brothers and sisters who have struggled in blood, sweat, and tears for the achievement of excellence not only in physical strength, but more importantly in one’s character. We spar and match to learn to control ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally, and in order to overcome our personal fears and limitations as well as maintaining and preserving our skills. Our competitions are based on performance rather than brutal force; it is more about controlling aggression and being more precise and accurate rather than all out show of force and strength. On July 2nd and 3rd of this year 2017 in Genoa, Italy, all the Hwarangdoists and Taesoodoist in the world gather to compete in our annual two-day tournament to share and exchange knowledge, experience as well as to challenge each other to better ourselves and further the development of our beloved Art of Hwa Rang Do. Total Art ... a martial artist The Great Cacique from the Caribbean-Caracas His body bleeding and riddled with bullets, Guicaipuro ploughs ahead firing off his sure arrows and killing the enemy. Two more bullets lodge in his body and blood springs forth from his veins but his arrows still fly from his bow decimating the invading army. His poisoned darts pierce their hearts, throats, eyes and heads. Yet another bullet lodges in his chest, but the courageous Guicaipuro, no more than thirty years old, without faltering, licks his wound, swallows his own blood and goes ahead to fight hand-to-hand with the Spanish troops, striking with his doubled-edged club of sharp stones, and splitting skulls with his axe. Three, six, eight men fall to the ground, their heads exploding. Another bullet enters his chest, but he carries on striking the enemy. He seems invincible, immortal. Now he continues with renewed energy, and with more fury. He is frightening to see with his eyes all a flame. In his hand he grasps his axe and in the other one a sharp dagger. He walks almost naked, wearing only a genital protection made of bone attached at his waist. His entire body is painted red, with Greek drawings in black, and his eyes are painted black. He also wears a skin headdress with the head

of a jaguar and around his neck he wears a trophy-necklace of human teeth, pulled one by one from the skulls of his victims. Two harquebus bullets enter his neck and now there are twelve bullets in the warriorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body, but Guicaipuro keeps going. The spirit of war possesses him and he has no fear of death. He is death. He is like a valiant Samurai, cutting a path with his axe and leaving inert bodies in his wake. Dead bodies pile up around his feet and he cuts throats with his sharp knife. Bullet number thirteen strikes his heart (that fateful number thirteen, that fateful bullet) and our hero (as if he was the character in an action movie) falls to the earth, mortally wounded. This bullet indeed has been the fatal one, but as he falls to the ground with is axe he smashes the skull of another Spanish soldier who also falls, his red body bathed in red blood, the blood of his enemies

mixing with his own. Guicaipuro died young, after only thirty years of his life, the victim of myriad bullet wounds but not without leaving behind him a trail of cadavers. He fought firearms with steel. One hundred soldiers against a single and valiant hero, like a Samurai from the Caribbean. Just like a combat of Miyamoto Musashi, our Cacique has a heroic end, leaving thirty of his attackers dead and a score more mortally wounded. With unheard of bravery he confronted an unequal enemy and succumbed with glory. The Spanish soldiers were surprised by so much bravery and despite being the enemies they admired the courage of so worthy an opponent. The soldiers observed a moment of silence for the dead warrior. A warrior dies and with him dies the resistance, because his death also constitutes the definitive collapse of the aboriginal defense of this land.

Total Art This story is not work of fiction, or my invention, or a Hollywood movie script, or a beautiful and heroic legend to tell our children, or a story written to exalt the great Cacique Guicaipuro. This story is real and it appears in the history books that tell of the Spanish conquests and it figures in the chronicles of the Indies, in the writings of the soldiers that participated in and witnessed the final battle against the great Guicaipuro.

Caribbean natives, who were the last group that settled down in these lands in the years 1000 A. C. until the XV century D.C., populated Caracas. They came as immigrants from the south and the east, from the Amazon. The main tribe of the Valley of Caracas was that of the people of the same name, who were governed by the terrible Cacique Guicaipuro. The attacks to conquer the territory of Caracas date from 1548, when Juan

Guicaipuro (1538 -1568) is: "the ultimate free man of the jungles of the ocean". Guicaipuro means lancer, strengthened by the fire in the mountain (guaica = spear and pure = sharpened by the fire in the mountain) he was the great father, the brother, the ideologist, the strategist, the leader and the Cacique of the ethnic peoples of the Teques and of the Caracas, Caribbean towns that inhabited the territories that today are known as Venezuela. He was unanimously and immediately selected from a large cohort of warriors to be its great leader and to defend the territory. So with great intelligence, a lively and reasoned malice and his clear vision of reality, Guicaipuro led the resistance of the indigenous peoples (Caracas, Tarmas, Taramainas, Charagotos, Teques, Meregotos, Mariches, Arvacos, Araguas, Tacariguas, Naiguatas, Guarairas, and Mucairas) against the Spanish armies in the time of the Spanish Conquests in the territory that today is the city of Caracas and its surroundings. For eight tough years (between 1560 and 1568) he was their highest leader and his authority was indisputable. He inspired security, res-

Crown and he led a powerful army that was invincible and swept through towns and villages, founding cities for the Kingdom, but who finally fell in 1561, under the power of the poisoned arrows that rained in their thousands from the skies, and he fell in the midst of the battle, a victim to the Cacique Guicaipuro. When the Conqueror went out to fight with his countryman Lope of Aguirre, Guicaipuro came upon him with his warriors all painted in red and overcame him to claim the commander’s sword as a war trophy. None of the army’s high command gave credit for what had really happened to the first line of this army and in fact the troops had not been able to shoot even one single bullet because they were surprised by a clever ambush and saw the sky turn dark with thousands of poisonous arrows that rained on them, giving them practically no time to react. Before the conqueror's arrival, Caracas (who took its name from the Caracas tribe that was also commanded by Guicaipuro) extended far into a wide and beautiful valley skirted by majestic mountains that have always protected it: The Ávila and the Guaraira Repano. During this period,

This was truly an impossible mission because of the strong resistance put up by the Caracas-Caribbean tribe led by the great strategist Guicaipuro. The Spanish army was literally destroyed because the strategic attack of the red men of Guicaipuro was something that the Spaniards had never imagined. The Caribbean army was truly invincible: a small infantry led the front attack, rushing forward with their slings, totumas and pots full of skunk musk and the unbearable scent of those "stink bombs" made the troops nauseous and made them vomit. Then the second group of the army arrived as the second line also carrying slings and throwing pots full of powder from the "cebadilla" plant which when smashed on the ground or against the trees makes the powder expand and produces a smarting and an unbearable irritation and your eyes burn and fill with tears. Then came the archers’ attack that were skilled in the use of poisoned arrows and were able to shoot hundreds of arrows in the space of only a few minutes. In this way the sky filled with arrows causing havoc. Then behind these came the

Total Art hand-to-hand fighting warriors who were protected with a cylindrical shield of about 40 cm., made of tightly woven wicker. This was the lancer squadron and they attacked mercilessly preparing the ground for their brothers. Behind these came the warriors carrying clubs, truncheons, axes and daggers (sharp deadly weapons) as well as sharp knives attached at the waist. They attacked without pity and advanced like piranhas, totally naked but protecting their sexual organs with covers made of hand carved bone. Their bodies were

Fierce Francisco Fajardo’s army was practically annihilated and his teeth were added to the trophy-necklace of the supreme commander. All this happened in the towns of San Francisco and The Hill.

Before going to war the Caribbean offered human sacrifices to their gods, and for a period of three days they took only a drink of clear maize soup

all painted red (with onoto) and their eye sockets and eyelids colored black, with designs drawn on their chests and arms. They were furious red men whose very image was terrifying. Guicaipuro also defeated the fierce conqueror, Francisco Fajardo. Fajardo had brought with him from Spain the best unit of soldiers who had been trained to destroy even the finest army. He arrived with the firm idea of stopping the insurrection, but the conqueror’s armada was decimated by the weapons of the tough Cacique of the Caracas tribe who put up impenetrable defenses called "wells of wolves" which were moats filled with sharp stakes and covered with dry leaves into which both men and horses fell onto the stakes. They also stuck spikes onto wooden stakes, which they threw against the heads of their enemies penetrating in between the cracks in their armor piercing their faces and necks. Then they lit fires so that the wind blew the smoke into the approaching army and there they burned the powders of "Caribbean" pepper, "chirel" pepper, chili "bell", dried peppers, pepper seeds "piquin", cebadilla and other suffocating subs-

But who were these red warriors, called the Caribbean-Caracas? The Caribbean people (a name also given in Venezuela to the piranhas) were anthropologically speaking members of the indigenous towns belonging to the linguistic family Caracas-Caribbean. These peoples occupied various areas of the American continent, originating from the valley of the Orinoco River in the heart of the Amazon. At the end of the XV century they populated most of the islands of the small Antilles as well as the coast of what is today called Venezuela, which was the territory of those that expelled the Arawaco people. The Caribbean valued above all feats of combat and until the arrival of Guicaipuro, they were not under the control of any leader, but rather they fought as solitary warriors and they attacked other towns. The Caribbean handled the canoe with great dexterity and their fleets numbered up to 100 canoes all with sails. On land they lived in small settlements and they farmed, fished and hunted animals with blowpipes, clubs, stone axes, knives, and bows and arrows (with poisonous tips). Generally speaking the warriors

and already possessed by the spirit of the war, they consulted their gods about the outcome of their battles. With a strongly marked culture of death it is easy to see how they ran rivers of blood as offerings to their gods. In battle they were truly bloody and pulled out their victims’ hair and teeth for trophies and licked their victims’ blood or even ripped the still living flesh of their victims with their teeth, or ate their livers because they believed that the strength of their enemies would be transmitted to them after death by swallowing their flesh and blood. This is the bloody religion of the Caribbean tribes, direct descendents of the anaconda snake man, that terrible warrior with a fearful presence, and a brilliant red face who represented death. Terror made man-god, the terrible ancestor of such a powerful race. With the fiercest resistance to definitively eradicate the Spanish intruder, Guicaipuro incited other Caciques to unite their efforts against the Spanish and in this way to unite all the tribes in the city of Caracas. A meeting of all the leaders was held and once again

Guicaipuro received a unanimous vote of trust as leader of the great battle. On the 25th of July, 1567, Saint Santiago's day, captain Diego de Losada, conquered the valley and founded the city of Santiago de LeĂłn de Caracas, the future capital of the Generalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Headquarters. Hardly had it been established when Diego de Lozada, knowing the Caribbean strategist's plans, gave the order to capture Cacique Guicaipuro and kill him and thus put an end to him once and for all. With the help of some treacherous natives, he discovered the exact location of the leader's home, and that dawn, at around four in the morning, the soldiers surrounded his house and an army of one hundred strongly armed men with firearms set upon one single warrior (who was truly the equal of one hundred men) and set fire to his

house. When the great Cacique Guicaipuro came out, he was bombarded with shots and fell, but not before he had done away with almost half of the army in one single battle. After the death of their great leader, the Caribbean were practically exterminated, and the rest of them dispersed onto the mainland. The army in the service of the Spanish Kingdom took definitive possession of the Venezuelan territory and finally began their conquest. The history of the conquerors of these Venezuelan lands and of what happened thereafter is already quite well known by everyone. 500 years have passed since these events took place and Guicaipuro is still in the memory and heart of all Venezuelans. He is remembered as a great warrior and is one of the heroes of our homeland. Currently, the

Caribbean peoples form a group of about 40.000 individuals whose nucleus is located in Venezuela and in Guyana. They are no longer the warriors of ancient times, and they do not put on red makeup, nor do they lick the blood of their victims. Only a few of them still exist and they live peacefully, having mixed their strong race with other tribes and races, but they have the same warring blood of their ancestors running through their veins. I believe that the CaribbeanCaracas are only waiting for a strong wind to arrive. In particular, those whose training focuses primarily on tournament sparring or so-called "self defense" seem to believe that kata offers them nothing. You have heard the critics: kata is outdated, kata is irrelevant, kata does not teach real fighting, kata is useless for self-defense, etc.

"People who think kata has nothing to do with real fighting do not understand kata or real fighting". These words were said to me many many years ago by a leading master of goju-ryu karate. I believed him then and, with my own growth and experience, believe it even more strongly now. Kata has stood the test of time. And, speaking of time, I want to justify the value of kata by going back in time to the period of European history called Late Antiquity.

Augustine Late Antiquity designates the time period between the end of the Classical Age and the beginning of the Middle Ages. It was the time of Augustine (354AD to 430). Born in the Roman city of Thagaste in North Africa, Augustine was many things: a great thinker, a brilliant philosopher, influential theologian, and, to the Catholics, a saint. What he was not, as far as we know, was a martial artist. What, then, can Augustine offer to help our understanding of kata? Augustineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Christian philosophy and theology grew from his understanding of the Greek philosopher Plato. Augustine introduced certain terms and concepts which, I believe, can help explain and vindicate the practice of kata.

Sensible vs. Intelligible

Augustine used the term "sensible" to mean "perceived by the senses". The term "intelligible" was used by him to mean "understood by the mind". The two terms are not the same. We can sometimes perceive things but not understand them. At other times we can have an understanding of something even when we are unable to perceive it with our senses. As an example, right now think of a triangle. Your mind knows and understands what a perfect triangle is, even if you are not seeing one at this moment. And, if you were to look at a geometric figure, you would be able to compare what your see with your eye (i.e. the sensible) with what you understand or know in your mind (i.e. the intelligible) to be a triangle. Another example: you know what a horse is, even when you do not perceive one. You can compare your sensory impressions of different creatures and know if they are horses or not.

Zanshin The sensory impressions can be varied and imperfect and yet they can be compared to what the mind understands to be a perfect image. The imperfect horse or triangle you perceive will be compared to the ‘real" horse or triangle that is in your mind. Augustine originated the idea that outward signs can express inner realities. The sensible (external, sensory) world can reflect the intelligible (internal, understood). We see the sensible with our physical eye, we "see" the intelligible with our mind’s eye.

Zanshin they signify. You must understand what the sign means before it can have any relevance for you. If you do not know what it signifies, you will not understand the sign. Signs make impressions on our senses but can also trigger something in our mind. Augustine maintained that the intelligible takes priority over the sensory. Understanding must occur first if the sensory is to have real value.

Guide Map A map is an external guide. It can tell us where to go, how to get there, and what to do along the way. But the map, Augustine would argue, is not the destination. It is a sign but it has to be understood, read properly, and interpreted, if it is to have significance. And, for me, this is Augustineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contribution to the martial arts. Kata are physical, sensory signs. To benefit from these signs you must know their significance. The outward, physical manifestation of a kata is not the same as the deeper, internal, real value to be understood. Performing physical movements (or signs) is not the same as understanding their significance. Kata are outward signs of a greater, internal reality. While no one would confuse a road map with a destination, many do confuse the physical signs of kata with their deeper significance.

Dr. Thomas J. Nardi Listen to someone speak a foreign language. If you do not understand that language, all you perceive is noise and sounds. If you have understanding of the language then those sounds have significance and meaning. If you do not understand kata, all you perceive or perform are physical or sensory motions, there is no greater significance to the kata. If you have understanding, then the physical signs of the kata make sense.

Many Styles, One Source Augustine’s philosophical teachings have given me a better understanding of my own experiences. It has helped me to realize why certain signs like tai chi chuan’s stork spreads wings brush knee and twist step, and golden cock stands on one leg, et. al., appear in kuntao silat applications and goju-ryu kata. And why tensho kata and wing chun’s sil lum tao are two signs with the same significance. To paraphrase Augustine, kata should direct our attention inward so that we can better grasp the significance of the form. Is it difficult to do? Of course! But Augustine maintained the greater the difficulty of the challenge, the greater the reward of satisfaction in solving it.

For example, a particular arm motion in one kata may appear to be a block but it could signify a strike, and, what looks like a strike may really be a block. Why? Because at the highest level of skill blocks and strikes may be one and the same. What appears to the novice to be a kick may actually be a throw. There is a great deal of interest today in grappling. Did you know that most traditional kata contain anti-grappling moves? The kataâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true significance may not be easily discerned from its signs. Realize that some kata were originated to build strength, speed, or agility. Other kata were designed to build internal energy and intrinsic power. Still other kata were developed to teach concepts such as how to close the distance on an opponent or how to maneuver in a confined space. I, personally, believe one of the greatest benefits of certain kata is the development of sensitivity to an opponentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s energy.

Bunkai Many styles of karate employ bunkai kata. Basically, bunkai involve two practitioners performing a prearranged sequence of attack and defense that illlustrates movements from a particular kata. Many Chinese systems use a similar concept with their two-man forms. These training exercises are a good place to start but remember: there is much more to the kata than what the bankai reveals. The bunkai application is only one of a literally infinite number of interpretations of a particular movement. Kata can serve many purposes but their ultimate purpose is to direct us inward. We must discover for ourselves the concepts, principles and techniques that lie hidden within the kata and our own minds. The significance is limited only by our own lack of insight or ability to grasp the true meaning. As Augustine might say: Learn the signs, master their significance.

SWORDS of Wisdom During my last workshop I had to remind my class of the goals in Martial Arts and have since decided to share it again here in Budo Magazine. I want to impart some new and some old advice.

“Pain is the best teacher, but injury is the wrong teacher.” This is one reason that we advocate safe training – “Slow is Fast.” When you have Martial Arts knowledge you only need to share it! We don’t need to slander and only see the mistakes of others. We just need to share our work and knowledge. “The more good that is inside you, the less bad you will see in others.” “That’s like the pot calling the kettle black.” “It takes one to know one.” “You don’t show a fool half-work.” “The hunchback sees only his companion’s hump.” “Judge not that ye be not judged.” “Anyone that rejects others – sees his own shortcomings in others.” “The camel does not see his own hump.” Now, I wish to share some old wisdom: SMARTial Arts of a great swordsman - we call it sWORDsmanship. Yagyū Munenori was a Japanese swordsman, founder of the Edo branch of Yagyū Shinkage-ryū, which he learned from his father Yagyū ‘Sekishūsai’ Muneyoshi. This was one of two official sword styles patronized by the Tokugawa shogunate. The purpose of mastering Martial Arts through training is to overcome six kinds of diseases: 1. The desire for victory. 2. The need to impress others.

3. The tendency to rely on technical cunning. 4. The desire to master the psychological aspects of your opponent. 5. The will to wait for the opponent's first move(s) which would expose their weaknesses. 6. The desire to overcome all of these diseases. “It is easy to kill someone with the slash of a sword, but it is hard to be impossible for others not to cut you down.” “It is bias to think that the art of war is just for killing people. It is not to kill people, it is to kill evil. Sifu Alfred Johannes Neudorfer and Sifu Rosa Ferrante Bannera, founders of Wing Tsun Universe - WTU, a movement which characterizes not by the use of techniques, but of qualities, exchanges, principles and concepts of movement - focus their first DVD in Siu Nim Tao (SNT) or "9 ways". Chin Na techniques require a thorough study not only of the body joints, but also of Anatomy in general. Chin means "catch, capture" and Na means "control." Then we can say that Chin Na are those techniques of gripping, pressure and dislocation, by which we can control our opponent in a defense situation. The Shaolin Chin Na techniques are used to neutralize or interrupt an attack. Although its origins date back practically to the foundation of the Shaolin Temple itself, it is well known that already during the last Chinese dynasty, Chin Na techniques were most popular among the population in general, so in that time the techniques of capture and control lived their moment of boom and expansion. This includes training under stress with the element of surprise. • Does the training take human physiology into consideration? We are all built differently, along with our strength and speed. Just because one technique works for someone who is 6’2”, it doesn’t mean that it would work for someone that’s 5’2”. Training and tactical execution should always take human physiology in consideration. • Does the system deal with the what-ifs? This is extremely important in RBSD because the street is unpredictable. Anything can happen and at any given time, someone can pull a knife or improvised weapon. Remember that reality based self defense is not sports based. There are no rules or regulations, so you need to be ready for anything. Elite Combat Fitness, a hybrid of military drills and conditioning routines utilized by Champion athletes, takes Commando Krav Maga students to the point of near exhaustion before beginning the actual combat tactical training. These combat conditioning drills not only get you in better shape but also build a mental toughness element to your character. To fight through the exhaustion and fatigue, while dealing with aggressive attackers takes an extreme amount of mental conditioning. By drilling with intensive exercises, CKM practitioners are challenged to stay mentally alert and intensify their survival instincts. The next component in CKM is the tactical training. During tactical training, students are exposed to common street attacks ranging from punches, kicks, chokes and holds, to weapons confrontations such as knife and gun attacks. While practicing the CKM techniques, CKM practitioners are also taught to understand the psychological and mental aspects of the attack. For example, during a gun disarming technique, Moni points out the importance of playing submissive both verbally and with the use of body language so that your attacker believes that they are in charge. While doing so, never look directly into the attacker’s eyes. Once the attacker is off guard, the gun disarm is executed as quickly and precisely as possible. The technique is practiced over and over…until it becomes an instinctive part of you, almost like a reflex. Tactical drills in CKM must be practiced with partners because it is based on real life attacks. The only way to be street ready is to practice without a lot of cooperation from your partner. Your partner must provide resistance as you perform the defense technique. Ideally, you will have a group of people to practice with. This will give you a range of attackers from people of different strength and size. After practicing the moves a multitude of times with one partner, you switch to the next partner, giving you a chance to work with someone bigger, smaller, slower, faster, shorter or taller. Students must be prepared for any size attacker. Students must also work on “surprise attacks” where you may be faced with up to 3 or 4 attackers at a time. They can come from any direction and attack you with any weapon at any time.

Commando Krav Maga CKM is a system that also likes to deal with the “what ifs.” Because anything can occur during an attack, CKM always likes to look at different possibilities of an attack. Rather than saying “this is what you must do during a knife attack” and assume that all attacks are similar, CKM practitioners are trained to deal with “what if the knife drops”, “what if the attacker is a lot taller or a lot shorter”, “what if he pulls back and is a lot stronger” and several other “what ifs.” Although the combat tactic or technique may slightly vary, the concept is always the same. As students progress in the Commando Krav Maga system, the level of intensity becomes increasingly difficult along with learning more advanced tactics. Instead of practicing with plastic guns, you practice with paint-ball guns that can fire live objects. As well, CKM practitioners may be subject to practicing on concrete, in the park, or in dark areas such as parking lots. Car-jacking and hostage scenarios will also be part of this comprehensive curriculum. By building on a sound foundation of more common attacks, CKM practitioners start building up towards more aggressive and complicated attacks. No fights are ever fair, so this may be the most valuable tool to save your life.

Pressure Test The most unique drill in CKM is the pressure test. The pressure test puts the CKM practitioner under high levels of stress during surprise attacks. To simulate the level of adrenaline, CKM practitioners elevate their heart rate through intense cardio exercises prior to the drill. As well, the practitioner may be slapped or punched prior to surprise attacks to bring up their aggression level. Attackers are to be non-cooperative and perform attacks at full speed. To elevate the level of realism, surprise attacks may be conducted outdoors. As well, simulated

weapons such as hard rubber knives and guns are used. Knives may be dipped in red paint to simulate blood from getting cut. Baby oil may be added to simulate sweat. During ground attacks, if the defender doesn’t get up within 5 seconds, multiple attackers enter the scenario with padded objects and start beating the defender (simulating chairs or sticks). The purpose of the surprise attack is to create the most realistic training environment without having to get into an actual fight. However, practitioners do have to be somewhat cautious as many of the devastating CKM street tactics are not meant for competition. The combat techniques are meant to debilitate your attacker as quickly and effectively as possible.

Realistic Techniques Commando Krav Maga techniques are built upon one of the main principles in CKM, “Simplicity is Genius”. All the techniques in CKM have been developed so that they are simple to perform, even under duress. Under stressful situations, it has been proven that any move requiring the use of more than 2 gross motor skills is extremely risky and very difficult to perform. Imagine if someone put a gun to your head. At this point, the last thing you want to do is to try and figure out which technique to use out of the 30 different ones you learned by running various scenarios in your head. “What should I do if the gun is to the side? How about the front? Is it different from stomach level to head level?” You only have a couple of seconds to react. That advantage in Commando Krav Maga is that you only need to know one technique that can be used universally. The less complicated the technique, the more effective it will be to perform under stress. The techniques may also be customized for students of any size or strength. Just because certain moves work for

Commando Krav Maga people that are 6’2” doesn’t mean they work for someone that is 5’9”. Instead, the moves may be slightly modified to maximize effectiveness. That is why the practice component during training is so important. Students work with both men and women, shorter or taller, weaker or stronger. You never know who your attacker is, so techniques must be employed on all types of people. Techniques include empty hand combat, gun disarming, edged weapon defense, takedown and control techniques, improvised weapons, impact weapons, defense against vicious chokes or strikes, ground survival and defense against multiple attackers. Aside from the physical elements, students are also exposed to pre and post conflict techniques, focusing on the mental aspects of confrontations.

CKM for Civilians Commando Krav Maga for civilians is built for the purpose survival. There are no competitions, tournaments and more importantly, no rules. Anything goes in the streets, so many of the defense tactics were designed to debilitate your attacker as quickly and viciously as possible, using groin strikes, eye gouges, biting and many weakness point attacks to get away. The longer a confrontation lasts, the more chances you have of getting injured as the attacker may have a weapon or friends that are close by. CKM in Law Enforcement While CKM concepts and principles for the civilian sector focuses primarily on survival and disengage tactics, law enforcement personnel do not have the luxury of disengaging from the scene. Instead, they must remain at a crime scene until help arrives, which is why CKM techniques for the law enforcement sector focuses more on control tactics. In CKM, law enforcement officers train under three circumstances: 1) Yes Man - The suspect cooperates; 2) Maybe Man - The suspect gives some resistance and; 3) No Man! - The suspect is out of control. Each scenario requires different use of force tactics leading up to handcuffing the criminal. In each scenario, the goal is to effectively restrain the violator in a safe and effective manner while inflicting minimal harm to the person being arrested. There may also be times when a violent offender attacks a law enforcement officer with a weapon such as a knife. Martial arts as a topic in sculpture and painting The human figure in motion offered extraordinary possibilities and inspiration to artists throughout centuries. By performing certain martial arts movements, it has obtained a special place in sculpture and painting due to its grace, beauty, but also the power of the movement it shows. It is assumed that the first visual mentions and, more generally, the interest for physical activity has appeared in different parts of the world approximately at the same point in history. However, it is important to note that the artistic value of a piece of art does not rely solely on the physical movement and the action of the depicted body, but also on the quality of the artist's work. Balancing the visual and sports elements as well as the body's movement is something that even the best artists found to be a great difficulty. Such problems with the design also depend on the artist's personality, but have also changed due to various visual possibilities and â&#x20AC;&#x153;fashionâ&#x20AC;&#x153; through the centuries. The oldest sports- visual topic was found in South Africa and has been dated to the mesosoic period (10000- 4000 B.C.). It is a wall painting that shows a group of hunters- runners. Works of art that show a similar movement have been found in Egypt, while others have been attributed to the Etruscan. The oldest painting, Pankration, comes even from the 16th century B.C. and was found in the village of Agia Triada and kept in The Heraklion Archaeological Museum (Crete). It is important to mention a fresco painting from the city of Knossos, Crete (1500 B.C.) that depicts an extraordinary scene of men leaping over a bull's back. Further, the city of Tienen near Theba, Egypt is famous for a tomb's wall painting which shows a group of Nubians carrying a board with a drawing of two wrestlers. It is speculated that the visual dates from the period of pharaoh Thutmose IV, around 1450 B.C. A fresco painting of young boxers on a wooden cover was

made around the year 1500 B.C. (before the volcanic eruption) in Akrotiri on the Greek island of Santorini. The Sumerian have adopted the image of the hunter named Gilgamesh who is always shown naked killing a lion. Despite their cruel nature, the Assyrian people refused to depict their heroes naked so they have gradually dressed their visualisations of Gilgamesh and Heracles. Amongst their rich artistic production, the old Egyptians have left behind numerous sculptures, reliefs, paintings and drawings dedicated to martial arts. There have been found images of lancers and wrestlers in Saqqara, as well as those in Cairo and Ben Hassana. Divided into 120 groups, colored in black and red, they face a dynamic sequence. The biggest number of art works that show the topic of martial arts were made in Ancient Greece and Rome, especially after the foundation of the Olympic Games in 777 B.C. They are mostly marble reliefs of wrestlers in a palaestra dated around the year 550 B.C. One of them shows a javelin thrower on a terracotta goblet which is today situated in a museum in Berlin and is dated 430 B.C. Further on, Polykleitos' statue of Doryphoros (440 B.C.) is the model of the classic ideal of human beauty. According to the Greek canon, the head- body ratio equals 1:7. A good example of a relief design showing the image of wrestlers from Ancient Greece is kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Another famous sculpture is that of the wrestler Timanthes which is a part of the sanctuary in Olympia. There are various images of Heracles (called Hercules by the Romans). A marble statue of his figure with a club and lion's skin is kept in London. Several old Greek vases painted by the artist Exsekias also show him fighting the centaur Nessus and the Nemean lion. Today they can be seen in Athens, while those painted by Euphronios are present in Munich. Naples is the home of a famous relief that contains images of 153 gladiators. A unique visualisation of terracotta soldiers was found in the tomb of emperor Qin

Shi Huang Di (2nd century B.C.). Their bodies were carved in a rock in the north of China (in Xi'an â&#x20AC;&#x201C;Shaanxi). Similar, but colored ceramic statues of warriors and guards were dated 6th century A.D. in the period of the Tang dynasty. Comparable statues were found even in India (3rd century A.D.). The depictions of Heracles and Hermes are often seen in modern art. A statue of a slender fist fighter found in Rome in 1937 was attibuted to Polykleitos' artistic circle, while the statues of two famous wrestles found in Florence are a creation of late Greek artistry. On the other hand, the works of Agasius and Apollonius show a later design pattern and can today be seen in Rome, as well as the bronze statue of a professional fist fighter (1st century B.C.). The Etruscans left us numerous evidence of their affinity for movement and martial arts. The town of Tarquinius is home to a series of such artifacts. These pieces are completed with drawings on vases, wall frescoes and scenes of wrestling and spear throwing. Another gravure that was discovered shows a young fist fighter practicing punching on a bag of sand. The sketch also contains the author's name, Novius Plautius. Ancient Roman art is flooded with such works of art and imagery represented in all sorts of techniques and decorative work which frequently also depict gladiator fights. Art works are also excellent pieces of evidence which follow the development of sports equipment and their variety. Those that can today be found in Pompeii and Naples show how gladiators used a shield and a sword while their opponent held a trident and a net. Wild beasts such as lions, tigers etc. were also a part of the fight according to a relief in the Theatre of Marcellus in Rome. The surviving gladiator's fighting equipment bears the evidence that his popularity was immense due to its luxurious features (for example, a decorated helmet). A mosaic from 1st century A.D. shows wrestlers from Aquincum, Budapest and today decorates the entrance

floor of the town's baths. Due to the spall of the Roman Empire and the consolidation of Christianity that happened in the Migration Period, the spiritual climate of the time was facing great changes. This period marks a certain shift from physicallity which, in a visual sense, leads to bodily deformations and a hint of abstraction. Situated on the other side of the world, the island of Java was at the beginning of the 9th century a place where, beside Hindi art, a variety of realistic decorations was made in the Buddhist temple of Borobudur. They contained images of athletes and archers. The process of social development led to a small and carefully selected group of rulers and leaders in the Middle Ages. They as well as other knights took part in knights' tournaments. Less often they would fight in matches without the help of horses, using a sword or a battle axe. These tournaments developed into luxurious ceremonies, full of colors, shinny armour, decorations placed on shields, clothes and equipment used by knights and horses. Artists tried to capture these visuals in many different ways including graphic techniques and paintings. Today, well known images are those of tournaments in St Gimignano (kept in Trento), Malpaga and Innsbruck as well as Henry VII's tournament (kept in London). The period of Humanism and Renaissance brought deep changes in the way of life, customs, fashion and freedom of thought which also had an effect on martial arts. The power of Michelangelo's work and influence is shown in the fragment of the fight between Hercules and Cacus which can today be seen in Florence. Another example is the drawing of an archer kept in Windsor Castle. The great artist Leonardo da Vinci also made drawings of a crossbow and a horseman. He is also famous for organising knights' tournaments and for inventing a number of weapons. The small bronze statues made by the artist Antonio dell Pollaiolo, Hercules and Antaeus, is a dynamic structure showing a wrestling match as well as a death outcome. The same image made in chalcography by a hand from Mantegna's school is today kept in Munich. Various other visuals from this period showing wrestles and archers exist in Rome and Chantilly and are attributed to artists such as Lucas Cranach and Perugio. In the period of Manirism, more precisely in 1577, was written and published a book by the doctor Girolamo Mercuriale, De arte gimnastica, containing graphic images of fist fighting. One of the most important painters of the Baroque period, Peter Paul Rubens, depicted scenes of wolf, lion and leopard hunting. The Flemish artist Davied Teniers painted and archer with a bow and villagers with bows and arrows (the images are today in Rome and Vienna, respectfully).

Topics of martial arts were present in the period of Rococo in almost every technique. The Bertarelli collection in Milan contains numerous graphic representations of fencing halls and fencing tournaments. On the other hand, martial movement as a topic was also present in Asian art. In the 18th century, the Japanese Master Shunsho made a woodcut representing two wrestlers as well as the wrestler Matana Goro and Kozunosabro in Tovokuni (they can be seen in Berlin). The artist Miyamoto Mushashi is also famous for his drawings of fencers. The Spanish painter Francisco Goya made a lithography called Bullfight, while the sculptor Antonio Canova prefered to highlight the human anatomy by setting aside the sports side in his images. Examples of that are the bodies of fighters named Kreugas and Damoksen, in Vatican. Even more art works that showed scenes with hunting and fighting with wild animals were made during Romanticism. Eugene Delacroix's Tiger Hunt (Paris) or the drawing called Arab horseman attacked by a lion (Harvard) are great examples of this. Once the Wrestler made by Gustave Courbet came to light, it initiated a more contemporary view on sport. Honore Daumier, the father of the caricature, created various drawings of boxers, wrestlers etc. His works are today stored in Paris. The French sculptor Antonine Bourdele carved a strong statue of Heracles as an archer, while the Croatian sculptor Ivan MeĹĄtoviÄ&#x2021; had an unique talent of combining the power of form and the dynamics of movement. His work is today kept in The Grand Park, Chicago and shows the figures of Indians as Archers and Spearmen. Another breakthrough in form was the work of Alexander Archipenko with his Boxers. In Germany, the sculptor Edwin Scharff made a figure of a boxer, while Wrestlers by Karl Albiker were molded in concrete. These artworks can be seen in Basel. Another figure of a wrestler was made by Hugo Lederer and Hans Wimmer carved the figure of a javelin thrower. Willy Jaeckel's wall painting Boxing also received recognition as well as Max Slevogt's painting A pause in the ring. These scenes of various sports became very interesting not only in their varied visual representations, but also in the thoughts and criticism they evoked. The aforementioned painter Francisco Goya often returned to the theme of corrida and was its chronicler throughout his career. Another Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, who was famous for his visual experiments, showed a wounded picador in his linocut Picador and torero. Luc Albert Moreau made a lithography of a boxer called Eight, nine, ten. The American painter George Wesley Bellows' paintings include Two Boxers (Washington) and a record of a famous fight between Dempsey and Ferpo in

History 1924 (New York). A number of Olympic winners made their way in art, for example, Paul Landowski's Boxers made in 1928 (France) and the work Knockout made in 1932 by Mahoney Young. In the same year, the artist Lee Blair received a prize for his watercolor painting Rodeo. An honorable mention goes to a group of authors Saacke, Bailey and Montenot who made an architectural project called Arena for bulls. Famous old Maori sculptures made of wood are located in New Zealand. The sculpture Maori warrior made of bronze is located in the yard of the Hotel Hamilton, in New Zealand. The Shaolin temple (named after the mountain Shao Lin) was built in 495, in the province of Henan (mid –China). It was looted several times, however, in 1928 it was destroyed nearly to its end. In 2010, the temple and the nearby pagodas (220 pagodas built between the 8th and 19th century) were included in the UNESCO's list of world heritage as a historical monument of the province of Deng Feng. In the pavillion of 1000 Buddhas is also placed a famous fresco made by the painter Wu Da Ozi (the Tang family) in the 19th century. The famous tomb with terracotta warriors (tomb of first emperor Qin Shi Huang Di) was discovered in 1974 (in Xian). Visitors can only enter a restricted part of the tomb (open to visitors since 1987). Many Chinese works of art (pictures and documents) as well as monuments were destroyed in the period of the so- called cultural revolution that lasted from 1955 to 1978. The golden age of Chinese art is thought to be the period between the 10th until the 15th centruy, i.e. from the rule of the Song dynasty until the rule of the Ming dynasty. Also, the famous author Quing which lived in the 18th century painted various Chinese warriors. In 1935 in the town of Katchu Chong (Korea) were found various statues and paintings. They were located in the tomb Muyong Chong and were dated in the 3rd century B.C. (the Koguryo dynasty). On the ceiling of the Sam Sil tomb is a wall painting that shows warriors in different war poses from the period of the Three Kingdoms. The painting of the warrior Kumang Yoksa was also made in this period and can today be seen in the museum in Kyonggy. Japan is famous for various armour and helmets from the Heian period (O-Yoroi is a full armour and Haramaki were protectors for the abdomen). Some of the most beautiful armour were made in the Edo period. Other famous helmets made in a half-moon shape come from this period and have different names- Zunari, Hoshi, Kabuto and Momonari. Japanese authors that lived in the 19th century were famous for there woodcuts, namely mastors called Utamaro and Hokusai. Many Japanese old swords - katanas are also well- known (Tokyo National Museum and Metropolitan Museum of Art-New York). They were crafted in different periods (between the 14th and 17th century) and include preserved engravings on their blades (Horimono). Famous statues of Miyamoto Musashi are located in places Mimasaka (Ganryu- Jima in Hikoshima) and in Kumamoto City. The famous Japanese comic books (Mangas) popularized martial arts. For example, Judo Icchokusen (Judo Dreams) were published between the years 1967 and 1971 and Karate Baka Ichidai were distributed in the period between 1971 and 1977. Today, the famous sculpture of Bruce Lee is placed in Hong Kong and is the work of the artist Cao Chong-En. However, before this model, another statue of Bruce Lee was placed in Mostar (Bosnia) and is the work of the sculptor Ivan Fijolic. Even today, many other artists produce various images, drawings and sculptures on the topic of martial arts and sports. Ocean State Grand Nationals 2017 event was a moment to remember. This championship event has been a lit torch on a summit in Rhode Island. Noted many years for its indelible reputation of high standards and professionalism. Everyone including organizers Don and Christine Rodrigues anticipate this amazing time to witness demonstrations of astounding martial arts skills, creative forms and electrifying gymnastics. Competitors including the unbeatable Team Paul Mitchell came from all over the globe, Italy, Germany, Canada, Russia, Egypt, Mexico, Austria, Austria, Peru and England, each with one aim and determination, to win, be the best and celebrate their victory. It has always been the place where the audience is guaranteed to witness the finest talents and skills that is just simply beyond this world. Zealous competitors full of enthusiasm all geared up to unleash their techniques with agility and precision. In attendance were Grand Masters from all over the world such as NASKA Rating, Larry Carnaham International President, Tony Cogliandro, Coordinators, Rich Baptista, Tom Festa, Chris Rodrigues, Joe Greenhalgh, Greg Ruth and support of Paul Mitchell Hair Products. Among the scheduled activities this year at the OSGC 2017 was a surprise dedication to honor GM Don Rodrigues 50th Anniversary in Martial Arts. He began his training in 1967 under GM Nick Cerio and George Pesade. City Council Donna Travis (Don’s sister) presented him with Certificate of Honor from the City of Rhode Island. This year’s Hall of Fame inductees were Century MA Vice President David Wahl, Melissa Torres, Ashley (Lima) Sacrey, Kim Ross (Training at Rodrigues Academy for 22 years), Ann Assumpico RI Police Superintendent, 5th Degree Black Belt, Greg Ruth (Naska Promoter), Kalena Nordgaarden. Covering the event were various news media including Budo International Martial Arts Magazine making sure each moment was captured in photos and videos to be highlighted and archived. This year’s OSGN winners 13/Under Black belt form 1st Place Cody Leck, 14-17 BBelt forms 1st Place Danny Etkins, Women’s Weapons 1st Place Emery McKenzie, Men’s Weapons 1st Place Read Presli, Team fighting won by Paul Mitchell Team, Weapons Grand Champion won by Even Kennedy, 14/17 Weapons Grand Champion won by Eydefden Consodine. Men’s Traditional form Grand Champ won by Arid Tores, Women’s Black Belt Form Grand won by Emery McKenzie also presented with $1000 cash prize money and trophy. Men’s Black Belt CMX Forms Grand won by Jacob Pint, Men’s Black Belt Light Weight fighting grand won by the talented super fast Justin Ortiz, presented with OSGN trophy and $1000 grand prize cash money, Men’s B/Belt heavy weight fighting grand champion OSGN 2017 won by Jolt Morati presented with $1000 cash money and OSGN trophy and Macho product gift certificate with empowerment drive, excitement and perfection that enable some Grand Champion finalists score 9.99 and a perfect 10.
