Born in South America in the mid-sixteenth century, the so-called "Esgrima Criolla" or Creole Fencing is a combat discipline displayed by the creole gauchos, both in the army, during their independence wars, and in dueling combat. It is a live and current combat art that has been modified throughout centuries, that is, a mixture of techniques that were perfected and made own, from the Andalusians, the Gypsies and the Arabs with their gumías who, mixing with the American aboriginal pampa people, gave birth to the creole, whom time made gaucho. This new race adopted the Creole Fencing as their fighting system, the first original South American Martial Art, showing already as early as 1700 a defined style, that, with the passing of the years, got reflected in the excellent warrior of the pampas, with his own identity and defined and e f f e c t i v e techniques. His weapons are knives, and his protection is the "poncho". Among these blades, his signature weapons are the "facón", a knife that was born with only one purpose, to kill and fight, and the "caronero", among others, a long knife of more than 80 cm, which was used mounted on horseback. In this first volume, Jorge Prina, Master of Creole Fencing and Knife Combat instructor, tackles a complete presentation about this Art, explaining in detail the knife Grip, the Guards or Positions, the Distances, the Displacements, the Shots o Cuts, Moulinetes, the Poncho technique, physical conditioning and focusing and "visteo" exercises, as well as the technique with both "facón" and "alfajor".

or millions of years, human species has concentrated on a single goal: to adapt. Until the Renaissance, the concept of the individual did not obtain a formal expression in the collective consciousness. It was then that the idea wielded in the ideology of the great Greek philosophers acquired a projection which succeeded to transcend the limits, and that only a small elite of Athenian citizens managed to develop in their lives. Actually, during the middle ages, the son of a shoemaker was also the grandson and the great-greatgrandson of a shoemaker. Little had changed; the person simply had to adapt. As a matter of fact, the accent kept being placed on the custom and the environment instead of the individual. The idea of the individual is based on a single objective, because after having developed the consciousness of being differentiated, the next unavoidable step is to exert the ability to choose. This way, from the Age of Enlightenment, freedom, as a concept, acquires the appearance of being the powerful driving force behind social change, and extends, quite literally, like gunpowder. It's in the constitution of the USA when it first acquires a nature charter. Freedom is a means, happiness an end. Two world wars in between and then the fall of the failed counterweight of capitalism behind the iron curtain, mankind is living now in the information society, with all the fronts and backs of such dream. Although the transgression that supposes the idea of the individual as an operative and driving force of society has found an echo in our days, it's still a transgression that in a certain way is contrary to everything that made us human. Contradictions are time bombs that sooner or later explode, and the deaf price of these consequences exists. The problem of choosing is that it's a path with no turning back. From the moment that you can do it, a lot of energy, that you previously used to adapt, now is directed to the tiring act of deciding. You decide, and each decision will place you before a new bifurcation in your fate. What used to be automatic, now must be manual. The tools to exert this trade are based on information and the training of character, but above all on personal energy. It takes tons of energy to hold that effort and the truth is that most people lack such personal power. You may choose and decide, but you didn't necessarily

obtain what you wanted. Frustration is the first consequence to which we are not accustomed. When our attention existed in the very fact of adaptation, experts in it as we were, the loss or the failure of targets was a daily occurrence we had to deal with in our lives. The prey after which we ran, would escape most of times, and if it was us the ones running ahead, we'd be happy not to end up becoming a beast's breakfast, and move on. Otherwise, there was nothing to worry about. Dead men have no friends. By placing the accent on the inside instead of the environment, on the reason instead of the instinct, humans enter into continuous contradictions with our basic nature. Such stress has significant consequences on the state of individuals. The alienation resulting from the normal non-attainment of most of our endeavors is a matter for which we do not now seem at all prepared. We have even had to invent new words to define as virtue an attitude, resilience, that everyone had before... without knowing it! The resilience of those who live in contact with nature, provided them with the guidelines in which the environment rules more than the individual, with tools that they treasured and possessed naturally. Alienation and depression are the most striking consequences of this new paradigm, where a new plague, suicide, wrapped in the silent complicity of idiotic ideologies, yields the worst figures of our modern societies. The idea of human rights, without its counterpart, human duties, is a sign of the optimistic simplicity that has led us to this nonsense. The ignition of individual consciousness is a leap of giants in the evolution of planet Earth. The gestation of the Noosphere is undoubtedly the most important evolutionary value after the ignition millions of years ago of the spark of life. The biogenesis that preceded this new leap took its time, and many failures and successes preceded the moment when consciousness finally made its appearance. The idea of the individual is one more step in this race, and many more "misses and hits" will be necessary until we tame that bull. No matter how hard we try, we remain within nature and consequently its laws are still prevailing, among them, that of inequality, or what is the same, not all will access this new evolutionary state at the same time. Look around and judge; nowadays some are not so far from the Homo Erectus.

Argentina It's with a special pride and pleasure that I present this new and long-sought video about Creole Fencing. I was born in Argentina. In 1965 my family moved to Madrid, where we opened the "Librería Argentina" (Argentinian Bookstore), indisputable beacon of light, freedom and fresh air at the height of the Franco dictatorship, and we became the book importer no. 33, “Vitae española”, passing through customs and under the table the banned classics. Many Spaniards met Lorca, Machado, or Henry Miller thanks to my mother, Luz Romero and her good work, as well as her modern vision of the world and of life things, and the courage and approach of my father, Basilio Antonio Tucci, who left us early in the seventies, victim of illness. Being Argentine was a credit in those days. I am not saying that now it isn't, all I say is what a magnificent country, and how terrible the politicians who wiped out its prosperity. During the Argentine military dictatorship, we came to have up to 11 Argentinian people working in the book store! Some got on the plane with nothing more than the phone number of a lady named Luz Romero ... What I mean by all this is that I have loved my country and suffered for it in the distance, I've read ad nauseam its wonderful Martín Fierro; as a child I used to draw Gauchos and dreamed of their lives, a mixture of freedom and misery, of manliness and strong strength. And listening to Yupanqui, Rimoldi Fraga's "Caudillos y Valientes", Cafrune, Goyeneche and, of course, Carlitos Gardel, I got captive of their dreams, hopes and talents. Talents like this young Master, who gives us this gift today, recovering for the futur e a Mar tial Ar t with the unique and personal seal of a truly unique country, which occupies that special place in my heart. Creole Fencing, the authentic American Martial Art History Born in South America in the midsixteenth century, Creole Fencing is a combat discipline in which Creole "gauchos" (South American cowboys) developed a great skill. It was used b o t h i n t h e a r m y, d u r i n g t h e independence wars, and in dueling combats, that is, in one to one confrontations. Still in force and current, it's a live combat art which has been constantly amended, year after year, century after centur y, and we can add that it was already present back in the colonial era.

reole fencing is a mixture of techniques that were perfected within the system so becoming its own, of peoples like the Andalusian, the Gypsy, the Arabic with its GumĂa (kind of dagger). These ethnicities and their cultures mingled with the pampas Native American, and so was born the Creole, which time turned him into gaucho. This new race gave rise to the Creole Fencing, its fighting system, the first original South American Martial Art, leaving in the 1700s a definite style, which over the years was reflected in the excellent pampas warrior, with a unique identity, and highly defined and effective techniques. Thus the Spanish Crown enlisted the gaucho in its ranks, and put him to serve in the wars against the Indians and the European invaders, and, without any vanity, he proved to be an excellent warrior. His weapons were knives, and his protection was the "poncho", an outer garment which, in addition to keep him warm, protected him in the fight. Among these knives, his flagship weapon was the "facĂłn", that was born with only one purpose: to kill and fight. Another was the "caronero", a knife that measured more than 80 cm in length, and it was used on horseback. The poncho was generally made of wool or cotton although some were even made of leather, like the one used by the first national troops; it was a poncho that not only kept the user warm, but also provided protection against attacks. This was also seen in the American tribes that made leather armors to protect themselves from firearms as well as from knives; although they lost mobility, they nevertheless gained protection.

Argentina Among his knives, the "facón" stands out; this knife has not less than 45 cm, its blade is straight and sharp and its cape is cone shaped, for a better grip. This knife was born as a combat weapon and it had no other function. It was manufactured from broken swords, bayonets, and only a few were forged. The scabbard used to be showy, since the knife was a very precious element for the gaucho, and he liked to show off. At present this tradition still continues. Gauchos learnt and practiced from childhood the art of knife handling; practicing with the "facón" was called "vistear", or doing the “visteo”, and it was carried out in places called "canchas", a word of Quechua origin which means "place or space". These sparring meetings were called "canchadas". Children used a branch as a knife, with its end in embers or smudged in coal, so that it would mark the opponent when it touched him, while adults practiced using their knifes with the edge upwards; and that was the way they trained, leaving bruises and small cuts. All this training was accompanied by techniques, knife cuts were called "tiros" (shots)

â&#x20AC;&#x153;At the beginning of the 20th Century, with the advent of modernity, the gaucho had to adapt to the new times, so he moved from the countryside to the city to stay and the "matrero" (cunning, sly) was transformed into "malevo" (ruffian, bad-ass), and it was the time for "guapos" and "compadritos" (quarrelsome people), the Creole duel continued in bars and cabarets.â&#x20AC;? and there was a great variety; the "poncho" was used to defend oneself, with a great amount of techniques, among which "manteadas", "flecazos" and "ponchazos" to name only a few. Creole duels were common, there was no need of a great motive for them to take place. Already from the S.XVIII it was common to see challenges and "visteos" in pulperĂas (country taverns). When a duel was held, both contenders would greet each other with a cut on the ground and then moved away, starting the fight with a knife and a poncho. Duels could be to first blood or to the death, although it wasn't usually meant to kill; often one single cut would end the dispute, and if one of the two challengers ended up badly wounded, he was killed so that he wouldn't suffer; that was called "the holy work", a kind of euthanasia. Creole people also fought in the gaucho wars; creoles were skillful in the handling of the "boleadoras" (a type of throwing weapon made of weights on the ends of interconnected cords, used to capture animals by entangling their legs, or against enemies), as well as the "chuza". The chuza is the Indian spear, its varied technique was innovative. It

was used by one of the first Spanish troops composed of creoles to repel Indian attacks; these troops were called "Blandengues". Created in 1764, their name comes from the way they used the "chuza", which they brandished it in a way that produced an undulating movement. The "boleadoras" are three balls joined by cords which, when thrown, depending on the way of throwing, either they trap or they hit. In times of peace, the "boleadoras" were used in the rhea hunting (ĂąandĂş), the American ostrich, or to catch feral horses. But in the years of independence, "bolas" were widely used in the gaucho wars, in which the "montoneras gauchas" (creole armies) before going into combat, threw dozens of "boleadoras" producing important casualties in the enemy army. As well as in the hand-to-hand combat,

using one ball in the foot for kicking, another in the left hand as a mass, and the third one that was swung, and with turnstiles transformed into a fast and lethal weapon for those who knew how to use them. At the beginning of the 20th Century, with the advent of modernity, the gaucho had to adapt to the new times, so he moved from the countryside to the city to stay and the "matrero" (cunning, sly) was transformed into "malevo" (ruffian, bad-ass), and it was the time for "guapos" and "compadritos" (quarrelsome people), the Creole duel continued in bars and cabarets; to the rhythm of tango they fought with knife and shawl, being very common duels at first blood; and as usual, this fights were for the honor. When the law began to control that no knife was carried, the "malevo" began to use the "fiyingo", a small blade that was carried hidden in a knife shoulder holster. Creole Fencing is currently seen in the countryside at festivals and "jineteadas" (gaucho rodeo), children still play the "visteo", but there is a

much darker place in which it's still practiced: in penitentiaries. There they've changed the "faca" for the knife and the "poncho" for the blanket and the "tiros" are carried out with the same names as in the early years, when the encounters were between two gauchos; now the fights between inmates are also one to one, and the honor, in a strange measure, is still seen behind bars. I have worked as a Knife Combat and Creole Fencing instructor for the Buenos Aires Prison Services, training prison guards in Argentina, and it's been there that I met and witnessed that reality. A picturesque detail was, for instance, the way inmates had adapted the "flecazo", a

technique in which the gaucho would throw his poncho to the opponent's face seeking to hit him in the eyes only with the fringes ("flecos") in order to split his attention or cause him a momentary blindness. To carry out this technique, the inmates have added locknuts and small pieces of metal to the end of the blanket so as to injure the opponent.

Technique Creole Fencing, being an ethnic Martial Art native to South America, has variations throughout the territory

Argentina where it is practiced, but it's in force all over the place. Its training technique (which is the "visteo"), the "canchadas" (so are called the spots where sparring encounters are held, in which somebody must win) and technical names in general, don't vary too much: "hachazo", "flecazo", "chuzaso" and others are common terms to all the territory. In the Mapudungun language (of the mountain range aborigines), Creole Fencing is called "Ligkam"; it was practiced by them, and this discipline covers Argentina, Uruguay, southern Brazil, Paraguay and Chile.

I, Jorge Prina, learned it at a young age. Traveling I perfected the use of the poncho and other weapons, like the "boleadoras" and the "chuza", and over time, after many years, I introduced it in competitions, where I achieved an excellent performance wining South American armed combat championships throughout 2012. After that, I retired from the competition, to instruct the Security Forces, police, army and prison guards, places in which Creole Fencing still exists, both in Argentina and abroad, where other fencing instructors continue to teach Creole Fencing, like Danny Hoskins in the

Argentina USA, Darren Friesen in Costa Rica and William Kumikir, of the Mapuche community, in Chile. Nowadays, Creole fencing is practiced and learned preserving the original techniques. It's trained with its different blades or knives, namely, "Verijero" (short knife), "Facón" (medium knife) and "Caronero" (long knife). These weapons are used accompanied with the poncho in the left hand, combining the double weapon. Using the knife demands a wrist technique which, when correctly performed, makes effective cuts, as well as a variety of feints and turnstiles seeking the opponent's error; it is a very thorough study of the fight, hence the name "Visteo", which refers to observing and analyzing the opponent to achieve victory ("Visteo" derives from "Vista", sight in Spanish). The "poncho" handling evidences how a garment can be transformed into an improvised weapon. The "poncho" is a rectangle of vicuña wool, llama or simply cotton, with a central hole, which when handled with expertise, the user is able to divert a knife and even disarm the opponent, and without any doubt, avoid an attack, because, wrapped around the arm the way our creoles used to, it’s practically a shield. All is combined with displacements, as well as kicks, which are typical of this art, and some blows that are performed with the body; the paramount thing in this fight is to win; that's why training is something gradual and progressive: you begin learning to "vistear", later the poncho is added, then come body techniques like kicks and bumps, and so we continue advancing in techniques and knowledge ... Handling other weapons is also part of the training, such as the "chuza" (spear) fencing, in which we keep the technique trained by our pampas, as well as the "arroje a distancia" (that is, throwing the spear), obviously with the appropriate protections.

“What is trained in Creole fencing ranges from the use of "Facón" and "Poncho", to fighting with the "rebenque" and the "arreador", as well as the technique of throwing the "boleadoras", the "chuza" and even the knife.” Other weapons that we train are the "rebenque" (the gaucho whip) and the "arreador" (literally "for herding"), which has a great variety of attacks and, due to its form and technique, allows practicing disarms with it. The "boleadoras" deserve a separate section, since the using diversity of this weapon in combat is immense. From the "arroje" (throwing), which varies from the way it is performed, as well as the techniques on foot, this weapon allows combatting several opponents. Used mainly by the pampas, you can trap the opponent and throw him down, or hit him and disarming him, and if he tries to escape, don't let him go ... "bole" him, and if you don't catch him, you'll stop him. What is trained in Creole fencing ranges from the use of "Facón" and "Poncho", to fighting with the "rebenque" and the "arreador", as well as the technique of throwing the "boleadoras", the "chuza" and even the knife, with which the gaucho played "a la clavada", a game where he had to nail the knife in a target... And so it was that the gaucho fought in America and made this true Creole Martial Art his own!!!

The C.A.T. concept - Counter Assault Team, is a military concept that we will show you how to incorporate into your civilian training. If we use Close Protection concept as a star ting point, using a separate C.A.T. gets included as an extra layer of protection around the asset and his Body Guard Team.

Example 1: When doing PP (Personal Protection), you may have one asset, and two bodyguards. When a threat is imminent to the asset, one body Guard will secure the asset in such a manner as to avoid engaging the threat, and removing the asset from the danger zone. The second Body Guard will insert himself between the other Body Guard and asset and engage the threat to either neutralize or minimize his ability to access the asset. In the civilian world you could think of this in terms of a family outing. The asset may be a child, a wife and children, an elderly family member. In this scenario it could be a homeless man or woman approaching to ask for help. The threat may be nothing more than a feeling you get. The person may show outward signs of intoxication, or may be displaying questionable behaviors. How do you react?

Ritual Cat When the spiritual teacher and his disciples began their evening meditation, the cat that lived in the monastery made such noise that it distracted them. So the teacher ordered that the cat be tied up during the evening practice. Years later, when the teacher died, the cat continued to be tied up during the meditation session. And when the cat eventually died, another cat was brought to the monastery and tied up. Centuryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s later, lear ned descendants of the spiritual teacher wrote scholarly treatises about the religious significance of tying up a cat for meditation practice.

Source: traditional The point of the story at that time was that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d need to question accepted traditions to understand fully the proper intent of the teachings. In this case, the original intent was to eliminate the distraction made by the cat while the group was meditating. The original intent was lost throughout the years, leaving the lessons incomplete at best, and misunderstood in totality, and in the end ineffective because of the lack of passing down the knowledge. When we teach we want to keep in mind that the devil is in the details. Performing any ritual training without understanding is to teach an incomplete system or technique, which can then not be fully utilized by the practitioner. For me personally, this was a missing component when learning my first Katas. I love the forms, and this in no way is to take away from the pursuit of that learning. Being a visual learner, it would have been immensely helpful to understand the WHY of the movements in conjunction with learning the flow. It would require learning a 'new' skill visualization, perhaps. Some students learn better, deeper, and with more complete understanding if you can put purpose in perspective to movement. I put Kata into the category of teaching that we can do better with if we're not already doing that - describing the WHY of the cycle. Showing the student that when you do this, the Kata is taking you

through this defensive or offensive move i.e. defending against an opponent that has tried to strike you with an overhand assault with a weapon. In this story, the student would blindly meditate (as has always been done) but first taking the cat and tying him up in the kitchen. They have forgotten that the original intention was to minimize the distraction, which truly could have been a pot of tea boiling over! When we think of C.A.T. we approach it in several ways.

C.A.T. Philosophy: Use the C.A.T. concept as a SHTF backup, or PLAN B concept. The C.A.T. should be there in case the situation gets out of hand for the primary handlers of the asset. When the 'fight' becomes too much, the C.A.T. unit comes to the rescue to end the situation with a positive outcome for the asset. Typically you'd want them to NOT be a distraction, meaning more like the Gray Man concept of invisibility - there, but not noticed, not 'seen.' The primary team needs to train to dismiss the C.A.T. team as a distraction - train it out as you might use winter training principles to train out thoughts of how cold it is. In the story, putting the cat in the kitchen is the WRONG idea - you need to train WITH distraction, to enable your ability to function during chaos. You need to work through the distraction to train your mind to ignore it and still function optimally. When I was growing up, wed moved from a very small town to a larger village. Our new home was built on a new street, and we were the very first homeowners to move in. What we didn't know at the time

(the mid 1960's) was that the world political climate had changed to the Cold War mentality. We lived within 30 minutes of a large US Air Force base that housed the mighty B52. For a period during the first few years, we were treated to daily/nightly flyovers of these behemoths - yes, we lived in the flight path! As a pre-teen, coming from a very quiet town to a larger metropolis, and now living right under the flight path of the warriors was a HUGE distraction. You couldn't (seemingly) blot them out of your mind. They were just too loud, too often, and usually after sleep had commenced! I can't tell you how long it took to master the concept of ignoring them, but it did happen, and that training sticks with me through to today - loud generally isn't a distraction like it was then. I have an ability to tune-out many noisy things because of that training. A part of the Zen Philosophy is the ability to ignore distractions. A training example that Avi told me about involved his own personal training, which was conducted in the middle of a town - with a lot of available distractions â&#x20AC;&#x201C; things that life has to offer! The primary distraction is a mental one. Instead of pursuing the easy life as so many do, by choosing distractions like parties, or casual entertainment, he chose to pursue his studies â&#x20AC;&#x201C; morning, noon and night. He effectively pushed distractions away. Too many today

make excuses and/or pursue distractions because the work is too hard. They downplay their commitment in favor of pursuing more pleasurable activities. Putting the cat in the kitchen is easy, but it doesn’t help you understand Zen. It’s a conscious choice – pursue the easy life and it’s distractions, or put in the hard work to attain your goals. Distraction is not always a physical aspect, but can be a mental construct. Distraction can be defined as a want, but not a need. You can train and observe the effects on the group if you setup a scenario that offers a reward as a distraction to them. You plant the seeds in their minds, and then test how well they perform. Your C.A.T. members will be best place and utilize on the perimeter where they monitor the primary teams action and performance. The C.A.T. members will be outfitted differently in most aspects from the norm, with the norm be a business/business casual/casual 'uniform'. They may have more concealing clothing, more armored vehicles, and definitely different weapons and abilities/tasks. While their goal too is to keep the asset safe from harm, they are working from the outside to neutralize any threats beyond the inner circle of protection. They will have more armor, deadlier tools, and different methods as well as goals and procedures. The goal of the primary team is to 'forget' that the secondary circumference exists. To do their job without that extra shield becoming a distraction to them. One idea is to not rely on that and drop your stance profile creating opportunity for the threat by doing so. Think of the C.A.T. members as sleepers - there, but not. Invisible to most, or all. An extra layer of protection when your A Plan fizzles, or is completely inadequate when tested. Training the primary team members to forget that they exist at all, to not rely on their presence or capabilities. Many C.A.T. ensembles will include a Medic for example - one member whose job is to triage, and apply field medicine to the asset should he be compromised, and where full medical assistance is not immediately available. It may contain a more heavily armored vehicle for client/asset extraction with a high probability of success of escape and evasion, a vehicle that would surely include a specifically trained driver.

That is the extreme example, but you can certainly work it down to a smaller team, less tactical and more practical for civilian deployment. Do you carry an emergency medical kit? Should you consider doing that? Is it probable that you may find a need for this type of action plan? Again, you need to formulate your plan based on exposure, and probability vs. possibility. There are a lot of possibilities, that can be minimized to the list of more probable (likely) events. Keep that in mind when training. Too many train and practice for things they are never likely to encounter. Train for the probable. A training seminar to this end may cover a two-day session - which would provide enough background information to help you move forward with your plan.

Sijou van der Spek is the creator of the Gham Long Pai Kung-Fu system, a style in constant evolution for more than 35 years, with influences from Shaolin Kung Fu, Kempo, Choy Lee Fat, Yi Hsin Tao, Mok Gar Kung Fu and Kyokushinkai Karate. Systema Outskirts - this is the place where there is a primordial chaos devoid of any certainty. Grandmaster Taejoon Lee, 8th Dan of Hwa Rang Do, and son of the founder, Dr. Joo Bang Lee, presents a comprehensive introduction to Gumtoogi, the Hwa Rang Do Sword Fighting. In swordsmanship, in a duel, it is about life or death, not winning or losing. There’s only one price for a mistake “death”; there are no do-overs. This is the true warrior’s mind-set. First Core Class of the Week Curriculum: • Gibon Kwonbop – Basic Striking Combinations: There are set number of Gibon Kwonbops in both Tae Soo Do and Hwa Rang Do. They are only an example of how hand strikes and kicking can be combined to create an effective striking arsenal. Half of these combinations are practiced in each class. Students are encouraged to development their own combinations for selfpractice. • Mugi Hyung – Weapon Forms: There are three different categories of weapons taught in Tae Soo Do as an introduction. It is designed to familiarize them with weaponry in preparation for Hwa Rang Do as well as for the weapon fighting.

… Beginners – Jointed Weapons Category: Ssangjyelbong (Nunchuku) Intermediate – Blunt Weapons Category: Jangbong (Long Staff) • Advanced – Bladed Weapons Category: Janggum (Long Sword) • Ilbodaeryun – One Step Sparring: This is Static Training with pre-determined moves practiced with a partner, learning various ways to defend against punches and kicks. • Hoshinsul – Joint Manipulation Self-Defense Techniques: This can be practiced in both Static and Dynamic Training. â&#x20AC;˘ Gotoogi â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Grappling: Beginners train in position grappling and the Intermediate/Advanced train in submission grappling with takedowns and throws. Each techniques are taught meticulously, which is practiced with a partner. Then, they are allowed to free-spar in a controlled supervised environment. Our method of grappling differs from other styles in that our form of grappling is focused on more of a combative practical nature, than sportive competition. We want to offer more the practice of takedowns and throws and then learning to submit as quickly as possible on the ground. Therefore, there is more time spent standing, giving greater opportunity to apply throws and takedowns (i.e. jumping guard is frowned upon) and we do not focus heavily on fighting from seated position vs. a standing opponent.

The most important aspect to learn in grappling is learning to relax and not panic in disadvantaged positions with the understanding that there is always a way for escape as well as learning how to take advantage of your opponent’s strengths and weaknesses without force, but with fluidity and precision.

Second Core Class of the Week Curriculum: • Gibon Kwonbop – Basic Striking Combinations: The second half of these combinations are practiced. • Hyung – Open Hand Forms: These are combinations of movements according to each rank much like a long dance or gymnastics routine, to help the students learn their perspective stances, blocks, strikes, and kicks with the fundamental goal of improving their balance. Forms lay down the foundation and are essential for creating a strong martial artist. • Joksul – Kicking Test Combinations: Kicking is one of the hardest components to learn to do well and requires much practice. These Kicking Combination are created to help the students develop better, stronger kicks and they are performed in their belt testing as well as board breaking. • Daeryun & Yongtoogi – Standup Sparring: These are also trained Statically and Dynamically. The students are taught how to move effectively in relation to their opponent, how to close the gap, and learning the most effective ways to land their strikes on their opponent with control and accuracy. However, the most important concept to be learned in sparring is the idea of “Self-Control,” to control the self mentally, physically, and emotionally. And, that one has no control of anything external to the self. Only by self-mastery, can we overcome the external obstacles.

Third Class of the Week – Mugi Daeryun (Weapon Fighting): This third day of Weapon Fighting completes our holistic training in the comprehensive Martial Art of Hwa Rang Do. It is divided into two different categories and is alternated every other week. • Gumtoogi – Sword Fighting: Gumtoogi is our version of sword fighting using the bamboo sword by not only attacking the traditional target areas of the head, wrists, body, and throat, but also allowing strikes to the legs as well as applying spinning/rotational attacks which allows for the full expression of Hwa Rang Do’s multifaceted, comprehensive system. Diversity of Swords: Gumtoogi is the application and fighting with all types of edged weapons. Enter the Dojang: You enter into an unassuming building from the elements of the weather, walking first into the changing room. There you strip away the conventions of modernity, transforming yourself to an ancient Hwarang warrior as you put on your uniform, thinking of all the countless hours of sweat, harsh self-criticism, and hard work. Finally, you wrap your color belt around your waist, reflecting on your present rank and humbled by how much more you must learn. Everyone quietly enters the Dojang (Training Hall), barefoot, as to not corrupt the space with the dirt of the world and all the stains gathered from trudging in stress, in the hustle and bustle

of daily life. They stop at the entrance to pay respect to the art, the history, and the tradition with a small bow, putting them in a state of humility and reverence. 8th Dan Grandmaster Taejoon Lee, the President of the World Hwa Rang Do Association, who currently teaches at the club in Luxembourg calls everyone to attention, directing them to their perspective lines, depending on rank and readies them for meditation. All the students are seated in their meditation position with t h e i r e y e s c l o sed, focusing on their breath with Grandmaster Leeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s voice echoing in the background. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Breathe in deep and with every exhale rid yourself of all your tension, your worries, and concerns. Clear your mind and organize your thoughts as clarity in mind creates clarity in action. The only thing that is important is this moment, the present.

Once the students have cleared their minds and prepared themselves for learning, then they are now ready for training.

Shaolin

Martial Arts in Shaolin 1st Part To bring the reader closer and offer him a deeper understanding of the Shaolin Temple history, I have identified some key points about historical testimonies of Martial Arts practices in the Temple and their possible origin. It is not known exactly when the study and practice of Martial Arts began at the Shaolin Temple. The first data historically collected mention two disciples of Batuo, Hui Guang (Huìguāng 慧光 / 487-536 AD) and Seng Chou (Sēngchóu 僧稠 / 480-560 AD), both well versed in Martial Arts. But, of course, the fact that both of Batuo's disciples were or were not versed in Martial Arts doesn't mean that what they practiced were the Shaolin style (Shaolin Quan) as we know it today. Successive dynasties had to pass before the style of the famous Shaolin Temple was finally consolidated as such. We can find testimonies in the history of China about the practice of Martial Arts by the monks and their participation in the wars mainly during Tang, Ming and Qing dynasties, and later in the time of the warlords, prior to the destruction of 1928. This information is key to identify and differentiate two types of practices: on the one hand, the practice of self-cultivation based on the philosophy of Chan Buddhism (Zen), and on the other, the strictly warlike practice.

Monks make up a method of exercise for health After the establishment of the Shaolin Temple, the monks began to develop their own routines and they improved their way of meditation, whether the form of Batuo at the beginning or that of Damo (Bodhidharma) afterwards. However, these methods of quiet meditation, especially the form of Damo (Bodhidharma), which is totally immobile, limited the physical activity of the monks. Maintaining good blood circulation and body strength are fundamental elements of human life. If blood circulation is good, the body is stronger, otherwise it's weaker. Because the monks always practiced during long hours of static meditation, they began to lose appetite, blood circulation got deteriorated and it resulted in an imbalance of Yin and Yang. This in turn especially weakened the digestive system function, which led to malnutrition. Thinner and weaker, their arms and legs ached, they got sick and some even died.

Such poor physical condition not only damaged the general health of the monksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; community, but it also greatly affected the Buddhist activity and the survival of the Temple itself. In order to improve their health, monks had to seek a method of training and / or exercising. For this reason, as popular belief has it, the monks invented physical exercises that imitated the movements of wild animals (birds, monkeys, tigers, etc.), and also introduced productive work actions (weeding the earth, plowing, push and pull carts, and all kinds of activities that helped them move and improve health) as well as tasks of a Buddhist nature (lighting the lamps, burning incense, praying to the Buddha, the use of Buddhist elements and so on). Such exercises were developed and improved by the monks, systematizing a unique style of Gong Fu that was practiced by the whole monastic community of the Temple.

The Shaolin Temple and the Gong Fu From its foundation, in the Bei Wei Dynasty, the Shaolin Temple was frequently visited by eminent monks from all over the country, who brought with them not only information from other regions, but also new techniques to strengthen the body. In the years after the construction of the Temple, the situation in China was very unstable due to the corruption of the rulers, the wars throughout the country and the suffering of the civilian population. Many took shelter in the Shaolin Temple, especially among the military fleeing government persecution. And so it was that the Shaolin Temple became a place of exchange and cult of Martial Arts, where visitors and

those who escaped to change the fate of their lives taught their knowledge to other disciples and confidants. This type of knowledge exchange continued for generations, which can be considered as the main factor in the creation and development of Gong Fu in the Shaolin Temple.

The 13 monks rescue the son of the Emperor - Tang Dynasty (618 -907) One of the most important events that marked the history of the Shaolin Temple and its subsequent fame, took place during the Tang Dynasty (Tangchao 唐朝, 618-907) when, in a power struggle between Wang Shichong (Wáng Shichong 王世充), a rebel of the fallen Sui Dynasty (Suícháo 隋朝, 581-617), and the first

Emperor of the Tang dynasty, Li Yuan (Li Yuan 566-635 AD), 13 warrior monks armed with sticks helped in the rescue of the Emperor of the Tang Dynasty. Wang Shichong, had established his camp near the city of Luoyang and taken control of the Henan region, including the area around the Shaolin Monastery (少林寺). Li Yuan's son, Li Shimin (李世民, the second emperor of the Tang Dynasty) had been taken prisoner in Luoyang. To save his son Li Shimin, Li Yuan sought the help of the Shaolin Monastery to suppress the revolt led by Wang Shichong (王世充) and rescue his son. The Abbot of the Shaolin Monastery, Zhi Cao, and twelve more armed monks with sticks, led a surprise attack on Wang Shichong's troops creating confusion among the rebels and capturing General Wang's nephew, Wang Renze. Finally, Wang Shicong surrendered. According to the legend, in gratitude for the service of the Shaolin monks, Emperor Li Shimin enlarged the lands for the temple and officially granted them permission to train a unit of armed soldiers who could protect the temple and serve the dynasty when requested. The monks of this new unit were called "Sengbing" (soldier monks). By an Imperial edict they were allowed to take less precepts than the rest of the fully ordained monks

and it was thus that a new tradition and class of monks unique to the Shaolin Monastery began. On the other hand, in a stone stele of the Shaolin Temple, dated May 26, 621, you can see a text written by Li Shimin, where he orders that: "Everyone must return peacefully to his old vocation to enjoy the blessings of heaven." This text creates a great contradiction as to the legend that Li Shimin allowed them to form an armed group of monks; in fact, he orders them to return to their usual activities and not to mix in state affairs. Another question is whether the monks were already skilled in handling the stick or other weapons before joining the rescue campaign or if they were trained by the army itself.

The warrior monks against Japanese pirates Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) One of the great heroes of Shaolin was called Yue Kong. According with tradition, he lived during the period of the Ming Dynasty and that he was called by an official decree to protect the coasts of China from the "wokou" or Japanese pirates, which were armed groups made up not only of Japanese, but also Chinese and Koreans. Yue Kong became famous because he was said to be able to fight with a metal stick weighing over 20 kilos, and crush his opponents with a single blow of his stick. Between 1552 and 1554, Yue Kong led a troop of more than 30 warrior monks armed with metal sticks and faced the Japanese pirates achieving several victories, but in one of the battles they were ambushed and perished.

The monks took part in 4 battles in total; the most important was the battle of Wengjiagang, in July 1553, in which 120 armed monks, from different religious monasteries, faced a group of pirates equal in number, achieving the victory 10 days later. The group of monks only suffered 4 casualties. The following battles took place in the Huangpu river delta, but due to poor strategic planning, ended up in victory for the Japanese pirates.

Kung Fu

Element “Fire“ Rapidly straight as well as pushed strike sequences (chain strike) symbolize the explosive character of the element fire and its blazing heat, with which it eats up its surroundings. In the organic system, the element fire is associated with the heart and the small intestines. Fire is one of the five elements in the Hung Gar system. Techniques, which are allocated to the element of fire, usually find their way to the mark straightforwardly, as for example the so-called chain-strike does. Generally speaking, fire techniques symbolize the element’s explosive character and they often are associated with the tiger style respectively tiger-techniques. Looking at the nature of a tiger’s attack more closely, one recognizes that a tiger tends to attack straightforwardly and with razor sharp claws. The work with the Qi is also important in the execution of fire techniques, as it also requires an explosive type of power. Watching a Hung Gar practitioner exercising typical fire techniques, the image of a spirited warrior who is using a very direct kind of fighting techniques arises. In traditional Chinese medicine the element fire is linked with the organs heart (ying organ) and small intestine (yang organ). Especially the heart has a significant position in traditional

Chinese medicine, similar to the one allocated to it in the modern Western medicine. Without a heart, creatures would simply not be able to live, as all organs are being provided with vital substances via the blood-circulation, which is prompted by the heart. As already mentioned in my article about the five elements in general, Hung Gar Kung Fu does not know techniques which are “exclusively hard” or “exclusively soft”; techniques can be both. The nature of fire techniques can be described as a straight and unerring kind of power, techniques that can strike like a destructive flash, but also move softly like a flame in the

wind and encompass its obstacles. It is important to understand that the element fire consists not only of mere fighting techniques but also knows various different strategies or forms of power, always depending on what the Hung Gar student needs or aims for in a certain situation. The connection between the element fire and the tiger style is probably the easiest one to make for Western students and often it is the first connection made between the various principles in Hung Gar. Furthermore, the association of fire and tiger with the organ heart, which represents strong emotions like joy or love, seems very

logical as well. Perhaps this is also the reason why those connections are the ones most likely to be discovered by new and curious students. With regard to the real fight, a fighter always uses fire techniques when a direct and relentless approach is needed. A careful observer can identify fire techniques by these attributes. Admittedly, this is easier said than done, as the elements in Hung Gar are not simply embodied in single techniques, but are complete systems in themselves. The elements are subsystems which are an integral part of the comprehensive Hung Gar system itself. However, regardless of how complicated the elements might be to comprehend, on his way to better skills, the strong-willed and disciplined student will inevitably reveal this knowledge â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as long as he constantly tries to broaden his horizon, does not stop exercising and learns from a skilled teacher.

Element “Metal” The element metal is characterized by divisive movements (strong backhand strikes), which imitate the blow of an axe. In the organic system, the element metal is associated with the lungs and the large intestine. The element metal is another one of the five elements in the Hung Gar system. It repeatedly causes confusion among students, as its principles are quite difficult to grasp. To enhance their understanding, students look for hints or answers within the five-part-doctrine, where the element metal (like the four other elements) is explained as a part of various cycles and described with different attributes (for example: “The axe splits the wood, and can be blunted by this wood”). Since most people hardly ever encounter the element metal in nature, unlike the elements wood or earth, students in the beginning of their Hung Gar career often have difficulties to associate metal with certain techniques. In a recent article about the five elements in general, I wrote about the status of the elements in the Hung Gar system and that their purpose is to fight efficiently. To put it in the words of my Si Hing: “Just to destroy the human body.” To describe the fighting techniques, the picture of an axe and its strong divisive blows is very fitting, as the

principles of the element metal in the fight are often embodied in a technique which pulls or tears something apart. Furthermore, metal techniques are ideal for short fighting distances, which is why the element metal is linked with the leopard style. In using the typical leopard-fist, a half-open fist, a target can be hit with a small point of impact, the knuckles, from a short distance and with a highly destructive power. Beside its function within the fighting system, the element metal is important within the traditional Chinese medicine as well and linked with the organs lung (ying organ) and large intestines (yang organ). As mentioned in the text about the element fire with regard to the organs heart and small intestines, a ying organ is generally considered more important than a yang organ, therefore yang organs are usually only mentioned in passing. Not only the traditional Chinese medicine has recognized that there is a connection between the lungs and the skin, but Western medicine also acknowledges this link and that the skin mirrors the state of health of the lungs to some extent. The cause for several skin diseases can be explained by an imbalance in the lungs and can be therefore attributed to the element metal. A popular example is smoking. It causes various adverse affects and also influences the skin in a negative way. Discussing the element metal relating to fighting or self-defense techniques, an inexperienced student often struggles to establish an understanding for metal techniques. Nonetheless, or rather for that very reason, I hope that this article, as well as constant practice, enhances everybodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perception of these very interesting principles. It is the same as with the four other elements: the depth of knowledge and understanding depends on regular exercise, a curious mind and a skilled teacher. I sincerely hope that many students of mine will choose to go all the way to become Hung Gar masters one day and thereby discover the full potential, subsystems and secrets, which are embodied in the Hung Gar system.

Kyusho is the highest level of expression of any martial art. To understand Kyusho is to understand the knowledge of the reactions of the human body. The art of Ilustrisimo is a truly refined sword art system. It is efficient, direct and functional. It is full of subtle movements, strategic positioning and superior timing. It can appear simple, but when attempted, becomes complex. But the true beauty dwell in it's effectiveness and functionality. The Kali Ilustrisimo Laban Laro drills were put together by members of Punong Guro Edgar Sulite and Master Christopher Ricketts Los Angeles and Las Vegas groups also known as Kapisanang Mandirigma. Master Rondy Mckee is one of the most distinguished and renowned female martial artists ever, with over 22 years leading the "White Tiger Taekwondo and Martial Arts", known to be the largest MA school in the entire world, and through which have passed more than 12,000 students. Fu-Shih Kenpo TIGER AND DRAGON 5 ELEMENTS/ 5 TRAINING METHODS ELEMENT 1 : FORM The 5 elements that represent the 5 training methods, develop 3 levels of movement learning. We will proceed now to analyze every single element and level. The form, or â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kataâ&#x20AC;?, first element of the multidimensional Fu-Shih methodology, represents one of the most widespread learning system in traditional Martial Arts. Also in Kenpo, the study of the form takes on a leading role, together with other elements that complete the functionalities in a complementary way.

The practice of the form allows to get into the most ancient root of Art, to the sources, which have given birth to our fighting systems. The Kata, after a first setting phase, dedicated mainly to the development of basic coordination, evolves and can reach very high levels of executive improvement. Kata is essential for the survival and transmission of our Art and has an archive of techniques and principles that guarantee its correct diffusion and the precious possibility to transfer a knowledge coming from previous generations. This doesn't mean that Kata should be practiced in a passive and immutable way.

During this phase we won't only perform but our new knowledge will become a part of our martial practice and of our life.

Tiger and Dragon Kata Kata is composed of 21 techniques, combined in sequence and performed on the different octagonal ways. It allows the execution of a training "in shadow" extremely valuable to learn, fix and improve, step by step, mechanical, geometries and maneuvers, taking care of the efficiency of an essential coordination base in this phase of learning. This, at an executive level, represents a rather demanding stage for the practitioner, given the high level of energy and coordination. The founders of WTU Wing Tsun Universe, GM Sifu Alfred Neudorfer and Si-Mo Rosa Ferrante Bannera, present a new work, focused this time on Chum Kiu, the second of the "solo" movements or classic forms of Wing Tsun, from the WTU perspective. The WTU Chum Kiu, or "4 waves", is especially characterized by the use of the falling step, the 3 basic kicks (a Wing Tsun slogan for kicks says that "each step is a kick, and each kick is a step"), and the arm bridges, long and short bridges, which determine the way we come into contact with the attacker. The DVD includes the execution of the complete Chum Kiu movement, the 4 Chum Kiu sections with 3 applications for each one of them, with the use of the 3 basic kicks and the arm bridges. Finally, the video shows the sequences 2-7 of the Chum Kiu movements with a training partner or ChiSao. An excellent work which presents to us a new way of experiencing both the "solo" movements and those with a training partner in the Art of Wing Tsun.

Arnold Sports Festival February 28-March 2, 2019 Columbus Ohio As always, this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Arnold Sports Festival held February 28 - March 2, 2019 was as spectacular and even better with over 250 thousand people in attendance from 80 nation around the world. Each year the event draw new crowd and sports enthusiasts. Gov. Arnold and his partner Jim Lorimer added new categories of competition events such as body spray art with its unique colors and art sculpting on the human body was awesome to watch and admire.

US News Also at the festival were various aliens and out of space characters dressed in special costumes as you would see in the movies of Star Wars, Game of Thrones and many more, walking the grounds of the entire convention center taking pictures with fans. Addition to the sports categories was the Wheel of Pain similar to the one Gov. Arnold used in the movie Conan the Barbarian. This wheel weighs 20,000 pounds itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s solid structure made out of solid oak wood. Competitors will need to push the wheel 90â&#x20AC;&#x2122; in circle against 500 pounds of force without stops in between in order to win. This year the Arnold Festival started on Thursday February 28th with weightlifting, body building, fencing, gymnastics, dance, arm wresting and of course the opening of the expo with over 700 booths and very large crowd. It became bigger on Saturday with the opening of more events as the competitions went into full swing with spectacular shows at the expo that drew thousands of spectators, everyone hoping to glance at the Arnold making stops at most of the competitions, events, expo booths and some even get the chance to take a selfie with the actor. As the day went by I was able to visit many of the competitions that took place on Saturday, interviewed some of the incredible athletes who they told me about the hard work and training that it takes to reach top shape in order to be able to sustain the pain and agility require to do the best for the big win. Some of these athletes train 3 to 4 hours a day to keep their body in full swing to generate that power and the strength that is needed to perform with confidence.

US News Kill the fear of the mind to win, win. I visited many different events that caught my attention like, the body building competition on the big stage at the expo. It was good to see all those huge men and women displaying their massive body and posing for the judges in different positions, holding their muscle tones for few seconds to give the spectators and referees a chance to admire their physique with each position. It was simply unbelievable to witness the greatness of the human body structure on display. I asked some of the body builders how long do they work out every day and what they eat daily, to my surprise they practice 4 to 5 hours daily and consume 6 to 7 meals every day, food that contains lean protein such as 6 ounces of chicken breast, iron steak with brown rice and vegetables, meal for breakfast alone. The women body builders always look fantastic with slimmer body and fine tone muscles. They tend to be more elegant on stage with tons of jewelry and high heels that make them look more appealing for the fans to admire and enjoy the fun. Friday on the Expo stage they had arm wrestling, fitness and figure Arnold strong man lifting more than 1000lbs off the floor. The dance fitness and yoga was electrifying with music blasting to energize the competitors. In the night I was invited to the Arnold Meet & Greet 7-9pm where I was able to talk with body builders about their daily routine, the dancers, gymnasts, models, nutrition company owners, body paint individuals, martial artists, runners, fencing champions, artists, amateur pro boxers and much more. I had a moment to greet Jim Lorimer, Arnoldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s partner of this mega event, the man who actually invited me in 2004 to do my martial arts daredevil demo for the Arnold and his friends on the big stage. It was a magical moment to remember doing my martial arts stunts demonstration breaking glass with a Karate chop, flying over six chairs with side kick spear hand strike breaking five pieces of 1â&#x20AC;? thick boards, fans still remember this extreme demo and ask for more, take photos and just have good time. On Friday night I was invited by Gov. Arnold and Grand Master Joon P. Choi as a nominee for the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 4th Annual Arnold Battle of Columbus Martial Arts Hall of Honor and 2019 Bruce Lee Legends of Martial Arts Hall of Honor. It was an unbelievable moment, a memory of a lifetime as GM Choi gave a brief speech that I was a legend in martial arts and a great martial artist. GM Joon Pyo Choi is a 10th Dan black belt, president & founder of Oriental Martial Arts College & Hapkido Center. He started training in 1956 and grew to be one of the most prominent martial arts leaders in the world. He serves as chairman of the Arnold Battle of Columbus Martial Arts Festival. I have great respect for GM Choi and his accomplishments, moreover I am very grateful for him.

US News On Saturday at the Expo it was extremely difficult to move around because of the intensity of the crowd. I practically had to run about to obtain all the interviews for Budo Magazine. This year 2019 Arnold Battle of Columbus Martial Arts Festival attracted more than 700 competitors who participate in 12 separate championships, Taekwondo, Karate, Kung Fu, Wusu/Tai Chi, Judo, Hapkido, Tang Soo Do, Gumbo, breaking and weapons. At the Martial Arts event ceremonies GM Choi gave a beautiful speech about my accomplishments and awarded me with a gold medal. Thank you GM Choi for being a great host. I then visited the big stage at the expo with Miss Bikini International with Janet Layug from Florida who won first place. 2nd place went to Elisa Pecini of Brazil 3rd place Ashley Kaltwasser, Andre Ferguson of NY won 1st place in Men’s Physique. My next stop was to see the Conan’s Wheel of Pain watching Martins Licis of Los Angeles pushing the enormous wheel 119ft and 9in winning first place. By 12 noon I ran to the Hilton ballroom for the International Sports Hall of Fame hosted by my dear friend Dr. Robert Goldman and Gov. Arnold himself. There were over 35 members of the press to cover this event including myself representing Budo Magazine as editor. This year’s Hall of Fame inductees were: Michael Buffer, boxing announcer who in 1984 created the slogan “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble” he is also the announcer for the NBA, NFL, UFC, actor. Next hall of famer was Mixed Martial Arts fighting champion, Tim Kennedy, actor and a soldier with 36 wins in martial arts followed by Benny The Jet, world kickboxing champion recognize as one of the most outstanding martial arts fighting champion of our time. Up next was David Goggins, marathon runner, a hero to many for raising money for special charities all over the world. Then next was Rocky Bleier, NFL champion and legend, winner of 4 super bowls and author of “The Rocky Bleier Story” book.

US News I moved on to see the fencing, karate, boxing, world strongest man Hafthor Bjornsson as he positioned himself to set a new world record in the elephant bar deadlift locking 1045 pounds it was energizing to watch. Ryan Grabber won the Arnold Fitness International and was presented with prize money of $25K. Cydney Gillow secured 1st place win in Figure International as well as check of $16K. George Peterson won Arnold Classic Physique title and $5K check. As Natalia Abraham Coelho won Women’ Physique crown and $5K check. I then went to the Arnold Festival night finals where all 1st to 3rd place winners were on stage for the big win and interview by Gov. Arnold himself, among 2019 Arnold Festival winners: Brandon “The Prodigy” Curry a veteran from Murfreesboro, Tennessee captured 1st Place in body building defeating the 2018 winner William Bonac. Curry received congratulation from Gov. Arnold a check for $130K, the champion’s trophy, Tony Nowak Official Champions Jacket, and a medal with an additional $75K. Bonac received $10K check for Most Muscular. Luke Sandoe of the UK won 3rd place medal and $50K check. Cedric McMillan, 2017 champion won 4th place, a medal and $30K. The 2019 Lifetime Achievement award was given to Drs. Jan and Terry Todd, Pioneers in power lifting, champions and contributors to the sport of iron. Terry was a professor, sports promoter and coach, broadcaster for CBS etc. and author of Inside Power Lift book. The final award of the night was presented to Hafthor Bjornsson, winner of for the Arnold Pro Strongman World Champion 2019. He is the actor who plays The Mountain on Games of Thorns. To some it up, this years review of the event I was very pleased to have been able to attend the 2019 Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus Ohio one more time, meet new friends and be among the best athletes in the world. Thank you Gov. Arnold, Dr. Robert Goldman and GM Joon P. Choi and Matt Lorz for the invite and presenting me with the Arnold and Bruce Lee Hall of Honor 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award.
