“The trick is in what one emphasizes. We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves happy. The amount of work is the same.” Carlos Castaneda

“These are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.” Groucho Marx

nce again I face the blank page. Like in other things, inspiration comes to me in pulls, and after a few months without sketching out editorials, duty finally imposes itself. And since I cannot postpone it any longer, here I am, once more, absolutely stunned in front of the creative act. Reflecting on this, I feel that I am a kind of reactive “poor writer” (paraphrasing the great Mario Vargas Llosa), that is, what would be a “counterpuncher” in Boxing. In other words, I seem to need an external stimulus to get out of my reverie and confront the issue. On the other hand, perhaps as the fruit of a certain narcissistic delusion, I keep asking myself all the time: Who cares about what I think? And what's more, who will take the trouble to read it? In this fast-paced and superficial world, where everything is throwaway, reflecting is a totally out of fashion exercise, but reading somebody else's reflections is even worse! Today, anybody would subscribe (with no humor though) that quote of my admired Groucho which says: "These are my principles. If you don't like them ... well, I have others." At least my speech is anachronistic. I can observe the way my human brethren transit through life, moved by transient but generally obsessive impulses, and “as lost as an octopus can feel in a garage” (can you imagine?). By saying this I don't mean that I've never mistaken my path, nor do I purport to infer such absurd idea; you have to know how to get lost in order to find yourself, there exists in me a native good governance background that has managed to organize itself so far (at least until this fifty-eight watchtower), in a state of personal shape of at least a “pass” or “approval”. I don't say it with pride, but with gratitude. I have been lucky, it's true, but it isn't less true that I have managed to conjure it up working like a mule; a circumstance that, to tell the truth, I don't know whether it's the fruit of the virtue or of poor judgement. To write is to share, when not to pontificate on some matters (quite odd ones in my case!), because if you guys were asked (in the unlikely event that such an incident occurred and you happened to be followers of my works) what's in short what I write about, you would undoubtedly be in a strange dilemma. I myself wouldn't know how to answer such question, and most probably I'd simply try to dodge the subject and go off by the tangent. “About everything and nothing” could be a poetic response. It looks like a good title! ... I'll keep it in some hollow of my brains, but for sure I'll use it in some editorial. The thing is I write to the counter, because these questions that I am breaking down here are in no way new. I believe that you first write for yourself, in order to put out what has been filled and make room for something new to reach you. Repetition is irremediable, because in essence we are always the same or, in the best of cases, modulated versions of our essential nature. With the years

this is highlighted and the customs become tics, automatic gestures that at worst, we don’t even detect and so we keep repeating things constantly. Old age is reflected in this cognitive and psychic deterioration; it’s like a sort of sedation to gradually withdraw ourselves from this world. The eyes are a good example of the process: tired of focusing, one day they decide not to do it any longer, and you end up in Alain Aflelou's looking for a “two for one”. Gradually we blur the material world, passing from the disinterest to the “not to want to know” that surely lies behind senile dementia. As is the process, to which we're all irremediably exposed although we haven't volunteered, we better take measures, even in the form of small “pills” of curiosity, capable of rigging and tying our awareness of the everyday, so that we can transit through old age (“that which happens to you if you get to live long enough” ... Again divine Groucho!) in a reasonable operating state. Easy to say, hard to do, and what is more, another thing in which recipes do not serve. “Each one is each one”, as the poet said, and in these things, as in so many others, what is gold for some is poison for others. Increasingly, going back to writing and its motivations, in my case there has to be an emotional impact. This is the only basis on which I not only can encourage myself to undertake the tiring task of dissecting an issue, but also, and very especially, the way I find some interest in sharing it. The disinterest in the world, that natural feeling that develops with the years as a result of the disconnection with the material realm, no doubt has its positive aspects, but it isn't one of them to avoid suffering only because things do not touch you. Solitude after deadline is one of the most unpleasant results of this mistake. We can't confuse apathy with detachment, or disinterest with liberation. Knowing myself as I do, I observed that in my case there was a tendency to disconnect with the new generations. It's nothing new, it's always been like that, some people are born old and I’m one of them. Most of my friends were always older than me and that facilitated the exchange, because my interests transited through anachronistic vital spaces with regard to my chronological age. Anyway I must begin now to reverse this process and turn it to manual, because my automatic will always take me to the same watering trough, which, sooner rather than later, and due to the law of life, will become exhausted. On the other hand, commonplaces and vulgarities have always bothered my intelligence, and all those worn out arguments of “any past time was better”, “today’s young people”, etc., are as old as bloody time itself. If that was to be the case, evolution simply wouldn't exist, and if there's anything that I deeply detest is stagnation. In addition, I guess I've lived long enough to know that, when life puts a dish in front of you, you better start getting a taste for it, otherwise it will usually follow the standard procedure, that is to say, “needs must when

O

“The only thing that goes hand in hand with it is (yes! you guessed!) sex, but it's something much more primitive and temporary and above all, its fruits are always external.

the devil drives”, or, what is the same: “If someone doesn't like broth, give him two bowls!” When things are meant to happen their force is enormous, evolution is always merciless. All these reflections, in short, have led me to approach the youngest ones. This process, far from being based on a “putting myself in their place” sort of thought, not only an improper but also ridiculous attitude, or wanting them to put themselves in mine (something absolutely impossible), will lead us unambiguously and inevitably to a transfer as old as efficient, an exchange that I’ve been practicing from the other side until very recently: the learning from differences. The saying has it that “the smart learns more from the fool than the fool does from the smart” so, may this serve as a “Notice to Skippers”, everyone should stick to their own trades in the process. Once detected the problem it needs to be remedied. Normally in life, contrary to what people believe, what matters most is “being aware”. Consciousness is the point of greatest consumption in our totality of being. The only thing that goes hand in hand with it is (yes! you guessed!) sex, but it's something much more primitive and temporary and above all, its fruits are always external, especially if effective measures are not taken to avoid it ... (Ahead, my braves! Someone will have to pay my pension and the deadline is drawing closer!) Being aware marks the bisector of the change itself and focuses us in the response, in the decision. In the process, the mind, rather than a help, often turns out to be a hindrance and a bulwark of our own stupidity. I say this, distrustful as I am of exclusively rational analyzes, because when seeing the things with our own lenses, we end up seeing what these let us see, and they generally will lead us by the old ways of our most unmentionable vices, the extreme stupidity and the personal importance. Thus, the optimistic deceives himself, as much as the pessimistic curls up in his most ominous predictions. “Seeing things as they are” is an impossible exercise for the mind, without the interference and concurrence of higher consciousness, call soul, spirit or as you prefer. The remodels based on the first one are never conclusive, because they will inevitably take us in the arms of our desires and, like the horse, they will push us to the fold of fresh alfalfa trees where so many times, the devil you know is better than the devil you don't. Conceited as we are or desperate as we might be, we will fall in the “more of the same”, clinging to the conviction of a thought, that really was what took us there. Very often the problem is not in the acts, but in the interpretation thereof made in the vicious lens of our sameness. We cling to our vision of the world even to blame ourselves to the unspeakable, all before questioning those glasses we call mind, or the “privileged” vision that we chose, above our well-being and even our own life. Clinging to misery with true enjoyment, contrary to what many people think, is the most common of options. A synchronic phenomenon usually converges magically. When you are ready, the world seems to conspire in your favor. And I say “seems”, because I couldn't affirm it either without falling into the simplicity of optimistic positivism, thus creating a cause-effect relationship between both

realities. However, “being aware” is an unavoidable point in any process of self-modulation, and I’ve realized that, without resorting to the known “let the children come to me”, I must recreate my exchange models towards greener meadows, beyond even my desires and of course my inclinations. Approaching the new without prejudice is impossible; an old dog does not learn new tricks, but he can calmly adjust himself to situations, with the temper that propitiates the life experience. Detachment is not a minor advantage in such a collision and when it really occurs and not in a forced way, I would even say that it can be a definite weapon that will assist us accurately in such situation. Discarding inconsequential details, seeing beyond the forms, scrutinizing the paths of the future ... Good! That's always had a heart for me! I will take however great care of not transmitting a negative, pessimistic or defeated speech; first because I am not yet in such level; and second, because it wouldn't be fair to deprive those who come behind, of the carrot that necessarily their lives require. Of course, if they ask me, I will not deny to them as they didn't deny it to me - the measured opinion or the fair advice. I made good use of many of them! Of course, I always appreciated them and felt grateful. But you see, in the face of my new destination I would be able to dispense even the gratitude, because now I understand that everyone gives what he or she has, and you can't expect the elm to bear pears... Simply I will move out altogether with my part of the transfer, because I'm not really cut out for certain things any more. As I said before, we seniors are losing interest, but we are not idiots and although years are not a guarantee of wisdom, they are of economy. Aging make us stingy with our energy, mainly because it becomes a scarce good, but also because one learns to choose and learns to say the magic word ... NO. Distilled all this in a substantial resolution, I will not skip one of the most important consequences that good living really gives us, that is, elegance. Nothing compares to the natural elegance of the old man who, having made a good use of his days, exudes charm and serenity. Elegance makes life much easier and allows us to get out of misfortunes and impertinences gently, without shrillness. It's that strange “I don't know what of extraordinary”, one of the greatest achievements which, with a little bit of luck and some success, reach us with age. As you can see, once again, and like in Lope de Vega's famous “All of a sudden sonnet”, mocking, mocking, we are just about to finish our own poem. Without distilling any predefined substance, and in the exercise of the most manifest dilettantism, we fill the terror of the blank paper, with the consistent inconsistency of abandoning all intention and purpose of sustaining a definite discourse. I hope that, thereof, it remains in all of you and finally transcends, if not a definite implacable certainty of nothing, at least the coherence that ultimately reveals a certain and indescribable elegance. Once again, and if you have managed to get up to here, thanks for your attention, my friends. You belong to a highly valued minority ... that of those who read my things to the end; highly valued, I mean... even if only by me.

Jeet Kune Do THE EVOLUTION OF ASYMMETRICAL VIOLENCE In 1959 Bruce Lee came to America, at that time his original art was Wing-Chun. Over the next few years of working with much lar ger and str onger Americans, Bruce Lee discovered the limitations of Wing-Chun. In 1964 at the Long Beach Internationals is where Bruce Lee first met Dan Inosanto. Inosanto at that time was a world class athlete running the 100 yard dash in 9.4 seconds. Over the next 9 years Br uce and Dan together created what is now known as Jeet Kune Do. They dissected and synthesized every art and philosophy salient to street fighting.

In 1973 Bruce Lee passed away, and the mantle of Jeet Kune Do was officially passed to Dan Inosanto. In 1974 Mr. Inosanto opened the doors to the Filipino Kali Academy. His intention was and still is to continue to cultivate and refine the original process by which he and Bruce started. 3 years later in 1977 is when I personally joined the Kali Academy. From that very first day, I vividly remember Inosanto pounding in our heads, what he said was the most impor tant principle in JKD. “Constant Growth and Progression. Indeed the very words on his certificate echo this principle of continual growth and progression.

Jeet Kune Do The reason JKD was and is so affective lies in the simple fact that it is cutting edge. For example, during the mid 70’s everyone used to kick above the waist only. The folks that were at the top of the heap in this world were PKA (Professional Karate Association). The raging paradigm at the time was, one would irreparably damage the knees if leg kicks were applied. We disagreed vehemently with that conclusion. Very few people knew anything about Thai boxing in those days. And this happened to be one of the last arts that Bruce and Dan were exploring before Bruce’s death. Wanting to continue this exploration we invited Chai Siruste “World Champion Thai Boxer” to the Kali Academy. We all fell in love with Thai Boxing. The effectiveness of Thai boxing became so evident from that day on, that we made it a staple in the JKD curriculum.

hange is necessary so the practitioner can adapt to the ever changing times and situations. “ Throughout the rest of the 70’s and into the early 80’s while most of America was fighting out a low stance, and throwing face kicks. We were slamming our opponents front leg with the infamous Thai round kick, then clinching their necks and throwing elbows and knees Thai style. This curriculum served us well, right up until 1983 when we first met the Gracies. By 1985 we made Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu an official part of our JKD curriculum. If one were a fly on the wall at the Filipino Kali Academy around these very years they would see during full contact sparring,-jabs, crosses, kicks, Thai clinching, elbows, knees, takedowns, arm locks, triangles and chokes. In other words it would look like what MMA looks like today. The conclusions that we discovered in JKD are the identical conclusions that the MMA world discovered. 95% of the actual techniques needed in one on one empty hand battles lye within two arts, Thai boxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I use mix martial arts as an example, because the greatest fighters in the world have culminated to what is now known as mixed martial arts. The top of the heap in this game is the UFC. The UFC has sponsored just over “100” fight nights. There have been roughly 700 fights, of those there have been 432 victories.(268 went to a decision) 218 were from knockouts, of either punches, kicks, elbows or knees. Mostly Thai style. And mostly from the Thai clinch. We clearly have to give the majority of the standup techniques to the

“C

Jeet Kune Do Thai’s. There have also been 214 victories on the ground due to submissions. This means arm locks, leg locks, triangles, and chokes, these moves all belong to Brazilian jiu-jitsu(no one even know of any of these moves till Royce Gracie came along). Once one has the foundation of Thai Boxing and Brazilian Jiu-JItsu. It always helps to spice up your game by throwing in other styles. Say Greco Roman for the Clinch, Wing-Chun to improve forward pressure, or perhaps Savate for some Cro-Cop like kicks. In 1989 we decided to investigate shooto fighting, Inosanto brought in Sensei Yuri Nakamuri, and much like the Thai boxing everyone fell in love with shoot fighting. In 1993 Eric Paulson (In my opinion Dan’s all time best student) won the Light Heaveyweight Shoot Fighting Championship of the world and solidified shoot fightings contribution in contemporary JKD.

Where does original JKD fit in ? When we say original JKD we are referring to the combined curriculums of the Seattle, Oakland and LA Chinatown schools prior to Bruce Lee’s death. We strongly believe that the original curriculum should be preserved and immortalized. In order to assure this for the past 25 years we have made it mandatory for all Phase 1 students to know the entire curriculum of original JKD. When I hear people asking which is better ? Comparing original jkd to contemporary jkd(which is commonly called JKD concepts) I have to smile and scratch my head. You see, original JKD is contained within contemporary JKD. It would be like asking which is better, a Jab or Boxing ? Since a Jab is contained within boxing, the question is moot. Another reason against comparing the two has to do with fairness to Bruce Lee. In order to even be competitive now adays, there are some simple pre-requisites one absolutely must have‌ A clinch Game (Either the neck or the body) Takedown defense, A Ground game.

“When we say original JKD we are referring to the combined curriculums of the Seattle, Oakland and LA Chinatown schools prior to Bruce Lee’s death.”

Jeet Kune Do My first experience with Rorion and Royce Gracie left me speechless, angry, and enamored. So I decided to train Jiu-Jitsu full time and became quite fanatical. A few years later Inosanto and Larry Hartsell both caught the bug. Not long after Dan Inosanto became Rigan Machado’s oldest Black Belt. The reason that none of these elements are in original JKD. Is because they didn’t even exist prior to the first UFC which was 20 years after Bruce Lee’s death.

Taking JKD to the next level of violence. Asymmetrical Violence Once one has gone through the rigors of getting their thai boxing and brazilian jiu-jitsu as good as possible, then the only logical conclusion in order to progress is to cheat. The elements that serve us best in this cause are the weapons, stick and knife, and kina mutai. The Filipino Art of Un-Interruppted Biting and Eye Gouging. Regarding the weapons first, 76 % of altercations envolve weapons of some sort. We have gleaned these statistics from various FBI, DEA and police departments. In other words when a fight begins, the first visceral response someone has is to reach around them and grab something. This something can be a tire iron, a crow bar, a pocket knife a mag lite, a broken bottle, a pool cue etc… etc..

“My first experience with Rorion and Royce Gracie left me speechless, angry, and enamored.”

Jeet Kune Do

This means one could be a UFC champion, and go celebrating that night with the belt that they just won and perhaps confront some knuckle head, drunk, who pulls out a knife. Well there are absolutely, positively certain edged weapons principles that one must know or die. And the possibility of this world champion being a statistic is greater than one would think. So as the JKD person is concerned with survival first, they augment their empty hands with Filipino Weaponry. In the world of combat as Bruce taught us that no one style, system or ethnicity has it all. And just as the Brazilians are experts on the ground, and the French are experts with their high kicks, it is the Filipinos that are cutting edge with all weapons. Therefore I highly recommend that you find a Kali or escrima school for this part of your game.

Kina Mutai – the Filipino Art of Biting and Eye Gouging. The Main difference between a Kina Mutai bite and just a plain bite has to do with how, when and where they attack. When a Kina Mutai practitioner bites you, it is with an uninterrupted bite. Since he knows the exact places on the body to bite, and with precise timing. He grabs you with his incredible grip strength, rips into your flesh like a pit bull (using mainly one’s k-nines) and the single most important thing is that you are in some sort of bear hug while this is happening. Every single bite or eye gouge performed by a kina mutai specialist is augmented with their right hand gripping their left wrist, or their left hand gripping their right wrist (in a bear hug type of fashion). The actual motion of the bite is a repeated circular ripping of the flesh, when applied over a period of time the damage inflicted is unimaginable. A contemporary JKD man escalates their level of violence to this

Jeet Kune Do degree only for two possible reasons. One is to protect their to family. (perhaps carjacking, home invasion, or child abductions etc.) For a military operation. In conclusion, please understand that my intention upon writing this article, “Contemporary JKD”, is not to add yet another name for all of us to “fuss” over, I am however real big on respect. I believe out of respect to Bruce Lee and his direct original students, his original curriculum should be preserved and immortalized. I also believe that the people that have put forth 3 decades of sweat and blood, in order to keep Bruce’s Art cutting edge also deserve respect, as we are all branches of the same tree. If I had to describe contemporary JKD in a couple of words, You’ve heard of Dirty Boxing? My couple of words are … Filthy MMA. All the Hwa Rang Do, Tae Soo Do instructors and students have sacrificed much in order to participate and support this incredible experience annually as they understand that true value is not only in the Art, but in developing, cultivating, and enriching the human relationships, which is fundamental to living a meaningful life. Many of the outstanding members from all over the world who demonstrated the most their strong character, selflessness, and loyalty were recognized. Then, finally the Black Sash Ceremony concluded the night with the honored tradition that has been kept alive for over 58 generations of Hwarang Warriors; we welcomed and initiated the newest members to the coveted family of Hwarang Knights.

His background ranges from academic to martial, from behavioral to organizational concepts and the overlapping among those concepts are perfectly aligned with the integrated unique framework of the Hwa Rang Do’s principles and philosophy. 25 Years The MEGA event 2018 and the 25th anniversary of the KUNG FU SCHOOL MARTIN SEWER In 1992 my master, Kung Fu legend Dr. Chiu Chi Ling gave me a certificate and the permission to teach in Switzerland in his name. After several attempts with partners and on my own, I founded the KUNG FU SCHOOL MARTIN SEWER in April 1993. Many a masters who is reading this article can certainly understand when I say that it was no easy feat to build a wellfunctioning, fully professional Kung Fu school. Just like many others, I had to take on various part-time jobs, even though I would have much preferred to commit my time to lead ing my school. 25 years have already passed since the school was founded.

Hung Gar Kung Fu

Compared to other organisations and school, a quarter of a century is by no means a record. And yet, when one looks at all of the achievement within these 25 years, it could very well be one. And now of course we, my instructors, students and I would like to worthily celebrate this success with as many other masters, guests of honour, students and fans as possible. he MEGA event, which marks THE event in our annual calendar started off as a small party in a restaurant organised by my most experienced students in honour of my birthday. These annual evenings took place on a relatively small scale and we enjoyed the evening together.

T

Hung Gar Kung Fu

Over time my school was growing, and I had many more students. Therefore, my then new instructors and I completely changed the event and named it “MEGA Event”. We took an example of my teacher’s birthday parties, which are celebrated lavishly each time and sometimes last over several days. The MEGA Event was born. Together with the school, it has been growing up to this day. In the beginning it was mostly a Gala evening and it took several years until all guests could grasp what was meant by “evening wear”. A topic a will elaborate further later on. Back then, we integrated spectacular shows from all our branches into the big night. This way we demonstrated the progress we had made to our own students. Once we started to open new schools and to invite masters, there was no more room left for all the show teams, for it would have gone beyond the time the programme allowed. Instead, we were focusing on giving our students deep insights into our business and our plans for the future in form of a presentation. It was exclusively the VIP guests and my Black Belt show team who took stage. Much to my joy the Black Belt show has established itself, so that today the guests at the MEGA event look particularly forward to this last part of the evening. Today the MEGA event still takes place in the same hotel as many years ago. But today, it takes place in a much bigger, if not the biggest available room in the building.

Hung Gar Kung Fu “Today, masters who are invited are not mere passive observers, but are given several opportunities to introduce and present themselves and to be involved.

The programme has changed to a great degree and has been constantly extended. Today, masters who are invited are not mere passive observers, but are given several opportunities to introduce and present themselves and to be involved. Also this year, in the afternoon of the MEGA event Saturday, the students are coming together in their school uniform at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Zurich, because short, half-hour seminars of all VIP guests, in which they can present themselves and their style, have been included in the event ticket. At the first attempt of this type of programme already, the participants were very enthusiastic about this “new part of the MEGA event and thus, we have been doing it this way up until today. Additionally, in accordance with the Hong Kong tradition, a performance for the birthday child must naturally be included. It is presented by the aforementioned Black Belt holders, but also of course by the invited VIP guests. Previous guests for example were: Zong Shi, Damian Mohler, Sifu Claudio Fabbricatore, or Sifu Roger Stutz. This year, of course we would like to outdo the event, which is concurrent with the

Hung Gar Kung Fu

25th anniversary of my school, by inviting twice as many masters. To the MEGA event 2018, the following masters are invited: Sifu Mike Felder Sifu Roger Stutz Zong Shi Damian Mohler Sifu Claudio Fabbricatore Sifu Jose Fabian Jaime Sifu Luis Alfonso Quispe Rojas Sifu Tim Lau Sifu Paul Lee And of course this year again, all the VIP guests who are present at the event are going to give a seminar for all the participants. Depending on the number of guests, the seminars will last 15 to 30 minutes and will offer each master the opportunity to teach. At the Gala evening the invited guests of honour are going to be given the second opportunity to present their style. Other than that, I do not want to reveal too much about this year’s MEGA event, not least because we have not defined all items on the evening programme yet. This, however, I can say, that there is going to be a big improvement and no student or Kung Fu fan should be

missing out on this event. As for the evening outfit, I have already commented that in previous years it took several attempts to see all the guests in a suit (men) or long evening dress (women), just like it is fitting for an elegant evening. A t t h e 2 5 t h anniversary we are going to enhance ourselves once more. My instructors and I are all going to wear a tuxedo and a bow tie, in the original “Black Tie” and of c o u r s e w e h ope that as many students as possible are going to follow suit, in order to endow the event with elegance and exclusivity, which it deserves. Thus, the event can a l s o b e “ u p g r aded” in terms of clothing. Finally, in joyful anticipation of the event whose ticket pre-sale will start shortly, I would like to communicate an important message to all my fans and my Kung Fu brothers under Chiu Chi Ling: It was not my initial plan to turn my birthday, the MEGA event, into an international event. However, to my great delight I willingly admit, it has developed into just that. As “Head of Family” under Chiu Chi Ling, most of all, I would like to say to my Kung Fu brothers, sisters and friends how potentially important this evening can be for us all, and I would like to invite you to participate in the MEGA event, in order to celebrate this grand day with me, for the future of the traditional martial arts and for a better world - Black Belt after Black Belt.

Humans have been involved in many forms of struggle since the beginning of history. In most systems, techniques can be practiced in an alternative way, so that everyone can increase their fighting skills, although, over time, some systems have progressed focusing only on selfdefense and others on the sporting aspects. Boxing is strictly composed of short distance hitting techniques. Kyusho Jitsu is a high level component found in ALL hand-to-hand combat methods, that uses the pressure points and weakest parts of our body in hitting and attack situations, to subdue or control an opponent. Properly trained, both systems can be effective means of self-protection, and the same movements that a boxer practices can be used to improve our selfdefense skills. In today's world, we must be very careful about what we use and how we use it to protect ourselves. We can get by in a self-defense situation, only to suffer later at the hands of the legal system. Today's question is: "How can you defend yourself in a quick and efficient way without causing long-term damages to your opponent?"

Grandmaster Taejoon Lee, 8th Dan of Hwa Rang Do, and son of the founder, Dr. Joo Bang Lee, presents a comprehensive introduction to Gumtoogi, the Hwa Rang Do Sword Fighting. In swordsmanship, in a duel, it is about life or death, not winning or losing. There’s only one price for a mistake “death”; there are no do-overs. This is the true warrior’s mind-set. Gumtoogi is the best way of cultivating this “Warrior Ethos”, “The Hwarang Spirit!” Another way we like to think of it as: “One Cut, One Life!” In the search of creating a modern sport venue of weapon fighting that aligns with the comprehensiveness of the Hwa Rang Do curriculum, we seriously looked into the possibility of adopting an existing weapon fighting system with its equipment and armor. Thereby we have decided to use the Kendo/Kumdo armor by adding a modification in the form of a leg protector (Hache Hogu), that allows for leg strikes as well as spinning cuts, and incorporated the rotational strikes to make it unique to our Art of Hwa Rang Do. In addition, we practice fighting with all sizes, variations and combinations of swords (made in bamboo) as well as incorporating a wide range of movements and techniques. In this DVD, Grandmaster Taejoon Lee explains in detail the bases of stepping, distancing, basic strikes to head, wrist, waist and legs, spinning leg strike, counters and an introduction to Ssang-gum, Twin Swords.

One of the reasons why Markus Schinhammer has produced this DVD is to pass on the standard of Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu as it was passed on to me by GM Samuel Kwok and his teachers GGM Ip Chun and GGM Ip Ching. We hope that with this DVD we will be able to help all those who wish to acquire the unique legacy and the tradition of Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu. Combat applications of techniques from all forms, such as from Siu Nim Tao – structure and basics, Chum Kiu – footwork, turns, combinations - Chum Kiu is the key to combat, Biu Gee – will not leave the Master's house. Two-way energy – footwork – elbows – finger techniques – makeshift techniques – most effective attack techniques, Muk Yan Chong Fut – the "wooden dummy" techniques – strength in techniques – toughening up – footwork – angle work. This works also includes excerpts from the Chi Sao programme and how to use these techniques in real combat, coupled with Fan Da techniques - effective and functional techniques with no frills. We will also discuss subjects such as simultaneity, structure, footwork, strength in techniques, plus many others, in detail. Like a key that is used to unlock a door, this DVD can be used to decrypt and demonstrate the hidden applications and the power of the Ip Man Wing Chun system.

In this first DVD, GM Licesio Prieto, of the European Kajukenbo Kosho Ryu Kenpo Association, presents the essence of the Art of Kajukenbo, as it was transmitted to him by his Sifu SGM Cherry Ortega and many others. We will see the 1, 2 and 14 Palamas Sets and their applications from a more traditional point of view, from the perspective of the "Ka" (Karate and Kenpo), and then an application more suited to the Kajukenbo Kosho-Ryu school, working more the "Ju" aspects (Judo and JuJitsu) of the art. We will also study the first two Tricks or Punch Counters (cons against fist attacks), Grab arts (defenses against grabs), the GM Tony Ramos' cons, Knife counters (against knife attacks), Club counters (against stick attacks), various drills, and a sample of the work on the "Ju" aspects, emphasizing dislocations and controls. An excellent DVD that will help you assimilate the concepts and ideas of the Kajukenbo essential program, that GM Licesio Prieto will progressively develop in future works.

Fu Shi-Kenpo

Fu Shi-Kenpo

WHY DO YOU PRACTICE FU-SHIH KENPO? Because I love Martial Art. I love the discipline and I love facing new challenges. I strive to overcome my limits and my own inner obscurity. I love to measure myself, train hard, and to have a fit, strong and well trained body. I love being able to fight, being able to defend myself and being able to face life’s conflicts. I love training in a great school among people full of passion, and growing together with my peers in an enviroment of mutual support. I practice Fu-Shih Kenpo because I love to improve myself, and so that the fears I face today will not become my limits of tomorrow.

Fu Shi-Kenpo

THE FIRST TIME! I put on my gi, the black belt, and ran outside. On a field of grass there was a huge group of Karate, Kung Fu and fighting sports practicians. Together, they were training many styles, apparently different, but sharing the same passion. In the middle, a young teacher was smiling. He was wearing a black uniform and was attentively overlooking the training. As a young Martial Arts enthusiast, I was struck by his black uniform with its badges and his black belt. A golden yellow stripe ran along the whole length and at the end was embroidered the teacher's and style's name: Raùl Gutièrrez – Fu-Shih Kenpo. Sensei Raùl was moving with the expression of an explosive and lethal beauty, and yet he was always smiling, always available. A friendly attitude so different from the serious martiality I was used to. An overwhelming energy. The training was hard, real, very technical and very effective.

We followed the Sensei for seven days, diving into his martial path. He trained us, following his method, at the same time traditional and modern: a lot of technique but also pads training, sparring, body movements, footwork and conditioning. I was so excited that I didn’t even manage to speak to him. Every time he would come to show me a technique or to correct me, I thanked him with a rey (bow). At the end of the seminar, a public show was organised in Riccione, Italy. Sensei Raùl, performed the Kata “Fu-Shih Warrior” and a sequence of deadly techniques of self defence. We had never seen anything like that, it was extraordinary. It was 1991 when I first met my great teacher. We trained a lot those days. I was still a boy and I don’t remember all that I was taught, but my heart still remembers the feeling of excitement and the enthusiasm. The same feeling comes back and explodes every time we train together, every time that sensei Raùl teaches his Kenpo, Fu-Shih! L.Buccioli dt@fskitalia.com

Hi. My name is Justo Diéguez. I am the creator and founder of the KEYSI method. The difference between the KEYSI method and other systems is based on values: self-defense begins by valuing yourself, valuing who you are, and then you can start to value who the others are. Self-defense starts when you believe in yourself, when you really feel who you are, when you are really living your inner world, when you are you. It doesn't begin by wanting to be a person with bigger muscles than the rest; or because you believe to be more than others, or more intelligent; it doesn’t even begin because you have different qualities. It begins when you believe in yourself. Fighting is based on intuition, on instinct, not on technicalities. KEYSI is differentiated by a very simple way of working: While the rest of the martial arts are based in the development of the technique as an end in itself, in KEYSI we use the technique, of course, but we use it as a means, not as an end. KEYSI stands out for its simple way of working: While the rest of Martial Arts or any other system are based on the development of techniques as an end in itself, in KEYSI obviously uses technique but we use it as a means, never as an end. KEYSI's basic weapons and instruments are our natural weapons and tools: our limbs and our body in its entirety: Every part of our anatomy is liable to become a weapon. All this, combined with key elements such as body mechanics, distance, self-control, etc., give rise to this new and effective method. Justo Diéguez, its creator, presents in this video a complete sample of the Keysi method, which includes empty-hand workout, focus gloves, sticks, and numerous examples of emptyhanded self-defense situations as well as and against attacks with weapons such as sticks, knifes, including defense on the ground and in restricted spaces.

Grand Masters

We live in a mysterious world of which we know the little that the “glasses” of science allow us to see. But that is nothing but a focus on the mystery inherent in the totality of being, the mystery of the very existence of the universe, of life and of consciousness. When we find people in our lives who play at the limits of what our description of the world permits us to understand, it is not infrequent to perceive how fear transforms into arrogance, or in the best of cases, into cynicism. Shigeru Egami navigated in those mysterious seas of mystery and drew his own navigational charts. His lighthouse was his master, the founder of Karate Do, Guichin Funakoshi, and his life is an example of a personal quest. The figure of Egami continues being an enigma; his Art is something virtually unknown, something that of course has little to do with what we know as Karate today. However, his mark is there, too, offering that halo of power and mystery that Karate would otherwise never have. Perhaps this is his silent legacy. In this exceptional article, we penetrate the life and the meaning of this unique contribution in order to better understand the history of Karate-Do. Karate

The heir of Guichin Funakoshi Sensei Shigeru Egami was born into a family of tradesmen and builders on December 7, 1912 in the city of Omuta in the prefecture of Fukuoka, on the island of Kyushu. Since very young he felt attracted to the Martial Arts. At 13 years of age he begins with the practice of Judo and shortly afterward, he begins to combine it with Kendo. In 1924, when he was at school, he had his first contact with Karate. He saw a civil construction worker from Okinawa do various fist techniques from an art that at that time was called Okinawa-te, an art a little less than secret, transmitted from fathers to sons. Though it had an impact on him, he didn’t have the chance to practice it. At that time, he believed that that practitioner was a great expert, but years later he realized that he was just a beginner. Later he would begin with the practice of Aikido. This art left a big mark on him. What attracted him most was not its “external” work, rather the contrary, the internal, that which he didn’t see and that

Grand Masters

nonetheless was the “soul” of Aikido, the “Ki”. Though he never achieved to dominate it, nor understand it, he did perceive it. Wanting to follow the family tradition, Egami moved to Tokyo in 1930 to enroll at the prestigious university of Waseda in order to study a branch of economy (importation-exportation and international legislation). Fortunately for Karate-do, and despite having many difficulties passing the access exam, he managed to get in. There, when he was 18, he met Guichin Funakoshi, the man who would change his life when he became the first student to sign up at the Dojo at the university; back then, it was the third university gymnasium where Funakoshi gave classes. The first was at the University of Keio, in 1924; in 1926, he created the second, at the University of Ichiko; and in 1930, he begins his teaching at Shodai, Takoshoku and Waseda. During those years, Karate was a great unknown compared to the other Japanese Martial Arts. Egami, thanks to his martial

Grand Masters

knowledge, perseverance and training spirit, acquired a high level in a short time. After some years of practice, Egami was chosen by O’Sensei Funakoshi to accompany him on a trip around the country to do exhibitions with the aim of spreading Karate. The others who were chosen and who joined him on the trip were the masters Yoshitaka Funakoshi—son of the Sensei—and Takeshi Shimoda. After the spreading and promotion, they began to solicit teachers. Egami began to teach Karate at the universities of Gakushuin, Toho, and Chuo. Guichin Funakoshi, encouraged by his students, decides to build the biggest Dojo in the Karate world (Hombu Dojo). To be able to get the necessary funds for its construction, he forms the Shoto-Kai association. Thanks to Kichonosuke Saigo, an important political figure and one of O’Sensei’s oldest students, they get the funds and necessary permits for the construction. The building in the middle of 1935 in Zoshigaya Toshima, Tokyo and the project ended practically a year later. Funakoshi, 69 years old at that time, inaugurated it on the 29th of January, 1936. After a ceremonial training session, Yoshitaka Funakoshi, a great Karateka and worthy successor of his father, would take charge of the classes. Despite his youth—barely 30 years old—he revolutionized Karate Shotokan with his changes. Among them we can highlight

that of the positions. O’Sensei taught high positions with very low kicks, just like one worked in the Karate of Okinawa; but Yoshitaka lowered the center of gravity of the positions and after perfecting them, he began to teach them, converting them into what is practiced today in Karate Shotokan. He also added leg techniques like: Mawashi Geri, Yoko Geri Kekomi, Yoko Geri Keage, Ura Mawashi Geri, and Ushiro Geri. Furthermore, he created Gohon Kumite, Kihon Ipon Kumite, and Jiyu Ipon Kumite. According to master Harada, Yoshitaka adored his father and Funakoshi had blind faith in his

son and accepted nearly all of these technical changes. This opinion is shared by other masters who at that time were students and who assure us that O’Sensei accepted the changes without any kind of impediment despite the fact that some of them altered and contradicted his teachings (most of all in regard to combat). All these changes were realized during a five year period during which Yoshitaka trained and experimented with two of this students and great friends, Genshin Hironishi and Shigeru Egami.

Grand Masters

Supported by Guichin Funakoshi and by other important masters, Yoshitaka definitively separated Japanese Karate Do from the art practiced in Okinawa, giving the techniques their own personality, which had nothing to do with the Karate that was done originally. Many considered him a real phenomenon of the art, achieving an incredible technical level and mastery. Many practitioners from that epoch even considered him the best karateka of all times. The training sessions with Yoshitaka were very hard, as he made students repeat techniques hundreds of times to the point of exhaustion. As he said, it was necessary to go beyond the possibilities of each one and only in that way would one be prepared for a real situation. He practiced a lot with Makiwara, developing enormous power in the Tsukis, getting to the point of breaking several of them in the training sessions. At that time, Genshin Hironishi and Shigeru Egami were the most loyal and consistent students of Yoshitaka. They accepted all the changes that the young master made with true devotion. Egami

admired him profoundly and considered him a genius, trying to imitate him and following his teachings to the letter. In 1937, Egami is named a member of the grades panel of the Shoto-Kai association (Shoto was the pseudonym of Funakoshi), becoming the youngest instructor of the time. In 1941, Japan entered the war and many of Funakoshi’s oldest and most loyal practitioners were drafted and sent to fight, and many died in the conflict. Yoshitaka and Egami, despite appearing to be in exceptional physical condition, had grave health problems and for that they were excluded from recruitment; both had grave lung problems (tuberculosis). However, and for the irony of destiny, during the war, Egami was a fighting (Karate) instructor for the army. Almost at the end of the war, in the spring of 1945, Yoshitaka died as a result of tuberculosis. His father had his body moved to Okinawa in order to have him buried. At that period of time, a bombardment destroyed the Hombu Dojo. After the war, general McArthur prohibited the practice of Martial Arts for three years. That was

another tough blow for Funakoshi, who had lost his son, and during the course of the conflict, also the majority of his students, and that without counting the destruction of Hombu Dojo. Funakoshi lived in Okinawa with his wife, who died in November of 1947. That new misfortune, along with all those previous to it, sent him into a profound depression. Giei, one of his sons, wrote him and begged him to return to Tokyo. O’Sensei decides to return and joins with the principle and most loyal of Yoshitaka’s students: Genshin Hironishi from the university of Chuo, Minoru Miyata from the university of Takushoku, and Shigeru Egami from the university of Waseda. His oldest students, Isao Obata and Kishinosuke Saigo, also joined the meetings, both from the University of Keio. The main objective of these meetings was to get permission from the Americans to continue practicing Karate. It was then that Masatoshi Nakayama managed to convince the American authorities that Karate was not a Japanese Martial Art, but Chinese. With that argument, and a few others, he managed to have the prohibition lifted by the occupation

forces. The Japanese youth was demoralized; they had lost the war and there were few possibilities of practicing sports or a Martial Art, and the only thing left to them was Karate, for which all the practitioners were very appreciative of Nakayama. Once they got permission, Funakoshi’s first objective was the construction of Hombu Dojo; next to it, he also built his house. In 1949, Isao Obata founded the Japan Karate Association with the objective of supporting the management and spreading that was done by Guichin Funakoshi. O’Sensei was named chief instructor, Isao Obata its director, and Kichinosuke Saigo was named president. This association “practically” draws together all the practitioners of Shoto-kan, though there are some big absences, among them Geshin Hironishi and Shigeru Igami. At the beginning of the 1950s, strong frictions and arguments arise between its members, due especially to the commercialization and the “erroneous” focus (competition) that it was giving Kartate-do. The majority of the great masters withdraw from J.K.A. In 1951, Guichin Funakoshi, seeing the focus that Karate-do is taking, and in order to

“Anything rigid breaks down. Anything flexible momentarily yields in order to return to its original position.

Grand Masters

preserve it and differentiate it from those who wanted to convert it into a sport, brings back Shoto-Kai along with Geshin Hironishi and Shigeru Egami. Despite the existent discrepancies, Funakoshi visited his students regularly without giving importance to the line of Karate that they were practicing (ShotoKai, traditional Karate, or J.K.A. sport Karate). His hopes laid with Genshi Hironishi and Shigeru Igami because Karate-do had to survive in its original form, without accepting the western deformities such as competition, full contact in combat, etc. In a short time, O’Sensei names Egami chief director of the Karate Shoto-Kai association. Guichin Funakoshi died April 26, 1975, at the age of 89. The Shoto-Kai organizes his funeral on the 10th of May of that same year. The family of O’Sensei bestows the inheritance of the name Shoto-Kai, his personal symbol and his writings, to Geshin Hironishi and Shigeru Egami, who commit themselves to directing Shoto-Kai following the guidelines that Funakoshi desired. Two months before his death, the first national Karate championships organized by the J.K.A. were celebrated.

Sensei Shigeru Egami sets as an objective the f i n a l i z a t i o n o f O ’ S e n s e i ’s u n f i n i s h e d t a s k . According to some experts in the matter, Egami, knowing the great sadness and disillusionment in which Funakoshi died at seeing the new directions Karate had taken, proposed to complete the unfinished work of his master. For that, he had to return to the origins, just as O’Sensei wanted, and in that way give Karate that which it had lost, or what it had never had. Though Funakoshi never s p o k e a b o u t i t , h e k n e w t h a t Yo s h i t a k a ’s modifications had been distorted and though he himself had participated and supported those changes, they had not been positive for Karate. In fact, Egami didn’t realize until after the passing of many years the important and invaluable influence of Funakoshi’s teachings. After a long time and much effort, disillusionment and training, he achieved the three objectives which led Karate-do in the direction that, according to Egami’s criteria, O’Sensei wanted. These were: 1) To return to the origin of Karate. 2) To give Karate Budo or Heiho. 3) To include Ki work in Karate-do.

Karate

“They gave the Sensei one year to live, so he thought, ‘If I am going to live one year, I’m going to train all out so as to take advantage of the time.” The doctor recommended absolute repose. He disobeyed him, trained like never before, and after one year he was completely cured.”

Grand Masters

Returning to the essence of Karate Egami began to make modifications with the aim of returning to the essential elements of the original Karate, that is to say, to practice it as it was originally done in Okinawa. For that, he changed the positions, working once again with the center of gravity higher. He also changed the dynamic of some techniques; the striking areas; the movements came to be, in fact, very similar to those of Aikido; the attention on the Kime work focusing all the energy on a single point was without a doubt another of the characteristics of those changes. In this return to the roots, the techniques became more fluid, more continuous, not as rigid as those that were being done up to that time. The master affirmed: “Anything rigid breaks down. Anything flexible momentarily yields in order to return to its original position.” To end the rigidity, he puts special emphasis on relaxation, as much physical as mental and technical, eliminating those techniques that he considers rigid or inefficient. As much the body as

the mind had to be in harmony with nature and flow with the energy; all that was an impediment in the process was categorically eliminated. It was a new Genesis in order to train with the fluidity and relaxation with which it was practiced originally in Okinawa, stripping from Karate all that acquired hardness and rigidity, possibly the result of Yoshitaka’s changes and that were increased during World War II. Regarding this, his student Hiruma comments: “Sensei Egami explained to us that in his initiation into Karate, it was far softer and more flexible, not as rigid as one can see these days. In fact, Egami traveled to Okinawa before the beginning of WWII and practiced it. It was totally distinct from what we had been training; it was very much influenced by Chinese Kung Fu and the rigidity shined for its absence. This change worried Sensei Egami a lot and he always gave us Sihan Guichin Funakoshi as an example. He told us that when he began to train with him, what most called his attention was how relaxed he worked, though logically with the limitation

Today, the path of Karate has lost its course and it has been degraded to the point of being qualified as training to kill.”

that he was already quite old and therefore he didn’t have the strength or the vigor of the youngsters. When he defended himself or threw a strike he was totally relaxed until the last moment in which there was contact. Everyone worked like that.” The theme worried Sensei Egami a great deal, so much so that in his classes he made reference to numerous experiences and the teachings of O’Sensei. From among all of them, we have chosen this one, which perfectly illustrates the viewpoint of the concept of Karate that Yoshitaka

Grand Masters

Funakoshi and Guichin Funakoshi had and that the very Sensei Egami came to write down: “This occurred in 1937 or 1938. I had finished my studies at the university only a short time before. Back then, I trained with a lot of determination; during the day I did it at the Dojo of the university and at night in the Hombu Dojo. Once night when no one else was there, I was training the movement of the kata Tekki. I was repeating to myself, ‘Without placing the heel, the foot with the sokuto,’ and I did a fumikomi with determination. Then I heard a sharp noise on the wooden floor. Surprised, I looked down. My sokuto had cut one of the boards in two. It wasn’t broken, it was as if cut. Surprised, and at the same time content by the technical feat, I went to inform the young Master (Yoshitaka), and at the same time, apologize. Going down the stairs to the Dojo he told me: ‘Ah, good! You have done that? But it is very difficult to break.’ When he saw it he exclaimed, ‘Oh! It’s incredible! One would say it had been cut, it doesn’t seem broken. Don’t worry about the floor, it can be

fixed.’ Instead of reproaching me, he praised me. That filled me with pride. At that moment I noticed the presence of the old master (Funakoshi). ‘Egami, are you the one who broke the floor?’ ‘Yes, master, please forgive me.’ I was hoping that by asking forgiveness he would congratulate me. ‘Follow me.’ I followed him to his room on the first floor. When I sat down in front of the master, I was a little nervous. After a brief silence, he said to me: ‘Egami, this is the second time you have done something similar. The true training is not like what you have done. Before, we didn’t’ do such brutal things as this. True training is to put a sheet of paper spread over the floor and after throw water on it. Then you must train on it, moving on it without breaking it. Do you understand why we must perfect the technique?’ There is a great lesson from my master here!” In this process of change, Egami not only

Grand Masters

dared to break with many pre-established molds on the technical level, but he also did it on the training level. “The makiwara is considered an indispensable apparatus in Karate training. For a long period of time it was essential in my life. I trained with it for 24 years. Whatever the circumstance, I didn’t stop training with it for a single day. Even when I traveled I took a makiwara! If I didn’t train with it I felt bad. But to the extent that I evolved, my way of thinking changed. Progressively, I stopped training with the makiwara and stopped finding it beneficial to training. Nowadays I think that the makiwara is detrimental in the practice of Karate.” All those technical changes, of training, etc., served to carry out a mission…

Giving BUDO or HYOHO to Karate Egami proposed changing the bad image that Karate had at that time (some Japanese associated it with the deadly art of the mafia of the Camorra, the yakuza, and the common people). His intention was to present Karate-do as an internal fight against oneself and in that way carrying the philosophical bases of the art to all the aspects of life. The Do must be a way to self-realization, not a way of indiscriminant fighting. For that, the concepts of victory in combat must disappear. In

consequence, competition mustn’t exist. Beating the rest could be easy, the difficult matter was to defeat oneself. About all of this, Sensei Egami wrote the following text: “Is Karate a series of techniques to kill? Master Funakoshi taught us that in Karate one never attacks first and that it is necessary to seek nature through the body and the spirit. However, more than ten years ago, I found myself with an old Karate friend who asked me: ‘Are you still continuing with the assassin training?’ Those words infuriated me, but I had to admit that many people shared that opinion. Re-thinking it, and though it’s hard to recognize it and despite it being said that Karate is a Budo or Hyoho (art of strategy) that involves spiritual

Grand Masters

training, isn’t that a hypocritical justification for simple techniques designed to kill? Every time I asked myself this question, I told myself: ‘No, it isn’t possible. It’s impossible.’ But I have to recognize that there is a certain lack in the Karate of our epoch, in the ways of practicing it, and especially in the way of understanding the spirit of the Kata. I went through periods of doubts, of internal fighting, until I wound up understanding what the Heiho is, a method of peace that comes from the Japanese culture. When I understood the way of Heiho, the way of the method of peace, my whole body filled with joy. Today, the path of Karate has lost its course and it has been degraded to the point of being qualified as training to kill. My obligation is to focus it toward the true path, the Karate-do; this is what master Funakoshi wanted to transmit to us.” Egami, despite having the road marked out, took years to reach the “Do” in an attempt to prevent other practitioners from becoming disoriented and committing his same mistakes:

“What I write next is nothing more than the accumulation of my reflections and experiences after 40 years of practicing Karate-do. I would be happy if with these experiences I could help others to follow the path. I think that master Guichin Funakoshi tried to mark out the ‘Do’ during the 89 years of his life. I have arrived at the Do following the way that he laid out. Working on a path marked by our predecessors is not any easy task. Problems always arise in one’s state of mind, especially for us, who are normal men. With the passing of time, the road is cleared, some get lost trying to follow it, though at times it has been walked by another person. Some train in a labyrinth, wanting to use force to reach effectiveness quickly. Sometimes doubts arise and one considers abandoning the difficult search. However, one mustn’t get discouraged, at least there is a marked path and if not, at least it has been walked once. Taking away the grass and stones, we will be able to following the correct direction of the path. In my youth I lost my way, I abandoned the path and found myself in a labyrinth. It took me time to

Karate realize this situation and to return to the path; I had to go through an awfully painful situation. I was over 40 when I found the correct direction. But to find myself on the marked path filled me with joy and since then I have been able to confront al kinds of difficulties and I have come to reach the goal that my master marked out.” The technical changes were done and with them came the “Do,” the only thing lacking was….

Including KI work in KARATE-DO In the last stage of his life, Sensei includes the Ki, or Chi, work in Karate. Egami focuses his search on interpersonal communication and orients his Karate toward mysticism. Some of his students believe the he did it after a heart-attack that brought him to the edge of death; in fact, Egami himself described that as “having died once”. His extrasensory perceptions were sharpened and empowered, helping him in his quest of Ki. In this process there were two masters who taught him and had enormous influence: Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, and Sohio Innove, founder of Singa-

“Sensei Egami explained to us that in his initiation into Karate, it was far softer and more flexible, not as rigid as one can see these days.”

taimo. Atsuo Hiruma, direct student of Egami, comments on the influence that Ueshiba had on Egami: “I remember that when we were speaking about Irimi (the union of body and mind, not to be confused with ‘dodge’ in Japanese since the word has two meanings), Sensei Egami got very angry because he said that we didn’t know what we were speaking about. To develop it and work with it correctly, Sensei Egami turned to Morihei Ueshiba, creator of Aikido, since he thought that Ueshiba was the only master who controlled and worked Ki correctly. Not even Sihan Funakoshi got to Ueshiba’s level; in fact, what Funakoshi attained was “Do”. Egami, aware of this lack, wanted to learn about and perfect Ki in order to apply it, firstly, to his Karate, and afterward, to include it in the style. He explained that it was the only thing that the Shoto-Kai lacked to be a complete, a perfect, Martial Art. In this way, Sensei Egami came to perfect Irimi. When you had a combat with him, just as happened with Ueshiba, before they touched you, you felt the blow; it was a very strange sensation to feel that impact without any contact.” In one of the last interviews that master Taiji Kase, 9th degree black belt, conceded, he commented:

Grand Masters

“On various occasions, I accompanied master Egami on his visits to Ueshiba. He was a very warm and friendly person and… very strong! There was no one who could touch him, he was the master of evasion. Ueshiba taught things of great importance. He had an almost magical martial power. A great part of this power came from his breathing. He came to have absolute control over energy. Sensei Egami learned a great deal from him.” In that regard, there are numerous testimonies of direct students of Egami. Among them we can highlight Atuso Kudo, director of the Karate Club of the University Gakushuin. “In 1963, at the age of 50, master Egami had just discovered that magnetic waves penetrate the human body on the right side. From that day and after two or three years, he managed to establish long-distance Karate, the Karate with Toate (striking without touching the body of the adversary). He also said that in order to execute a tsuki, it was necessary to aim two meters

beyond the target, that he was able to know how his students trained without looking at them, that it would be possible to make a person fall without touching them, etc.” Masaru Mizushima, a member of the administration board of the Shoto-Kai association, comments about this very thing. “During a training session, when I touched master Egami’s hand for the first time, I began to sweat for no apparent reason. In the first combat exercise that I did with him, without him touching me I was thrown and I lost consciousness, which was totally incomprehensible.” Atsuo Hiruma: “I, just like any of my colleagues, were witnesses and we ‘felt’ the technique of Toate. In the Dojo, for us, it was something normal. I remember that a colleague, an expert in Kendo, tried to strike the Sensei with a Bokken. We saw him a short distance from the master. When he attacked, Sensei was 8 meters away. I asked my

Karate colleague, ‘What did you feel? Why didn’t you attack at times?’ He answered that he couldn’t, that he could only do it when the master let him… In fact, when Sensei was preparing his book, the photographer, a student of his, couldn’t push the button of the camera. He said, ‘Master, I can’t do it like this.’ The Sensei relaxed and then they could all work…” “His students were not the only ones to experience this; I remember when Sensei came to Spain and there was a delegation of Japanese masters who were desirous to meet him and had asked me to introduce them. So, I arranged a meeting and when I presented him everyone looked the other way. Yasunari Ishimi confessed to me that he was incapable of looking in his eyes, that he was nervous, as if blocked. When they left, Sensei told me that they were all great warriors, people desirous to spread the Japanese culture. Sensei came to have a control of space and time that was unknown to us. Egami spent two years only training evasion. A colleague told me that in that period of time he helped the master in his training, he only attacked. One day he had him cornered, and then Egami jumped right over his head and stopped just behind him. Mrs. Egami told me that every day, when Sensei came home, he jumped and left his prints on the ceiling. The height of the ceiling of his home was considerable, but on it one could see his footprints, as if a person had walked on it. Mrs. Egami was embarrassed about it, because she didn’t like to see the ceiling of the entrance to her home full of footprints… It seemed that for him, the laws

Grand Masters

of gravity didn’t exist. I believe that having been so close to death helped him to develop and empower certain forces or energies that are totally unknown to us. He also developed telepathy; when you practiced combat with him, if you thought to throw a punch, he anticipated it and before you did it, he said, ‘Oi Tsuki’ and if you thought about throwing a kick, he said, ‘Mae Geri,’ which was surprising as well as frustrating. I remember that before going to sleep, he had a massage. One day when I was giving him a massage, I was very tired and I thought, ‘When is he going to sleep?’ The master replied, ‘You continue like that and soon you will go.’ It was truly surprising! I believe he was the best karateka of all times and I’m not the only one who thinks that.” Many masters and practitioners consider Shigeru Egami’s method the result of his personal quest in Kartate-do; others believe that he simply arrived at the end of the path, following the way marked out by Guichin Funakoshi. From the technical point of view, the kind of Karate that Shigeru Egami established is

very different from that taught by Guichin Funakoshi. Nonetheless, everyone recognizes that the ‘Do’ and the ‘Ki’ are universal. And I would dare say that if that is so, what importance do technical differences have? The wise man focuses on the fruit, not on the flower. What is unquestionable is his great legacy. Thanks to him, a transcendent focus on Karate-do was revitalized and perpetuated, completing its spiritual and esoteric aspects, returning to its essence as a way of self-realization, as a way of overcoming oneself instead of overcoming an adversary. Egami dedicated his life to Karate-do. Everyone who knew him agrees that his pre-mature death was in great part due to the hard training he did during his youth and that had repercussions in his health; they are sure that he sacrificed his health and wellbeing to reach his goals. Said Egami, “In order go beyond traditional Karate and make it evolve, I was hasty to put so much emphasis on the soul.” Exactly. Illness was his travel companion throughout his entire life. At 24 he caught tuberculosis after pneumonia. According to Hiruma:

Karate “They gave the Sensei one year to live, so he thought, ‘If I am going to live one year, I’m going to train all out so as to take advantage of the time.” The doctor recommended absolute repose. He disobeyed him, trained like never before, and after one year he was completely cured. In 1967 he had to be hospitalized after suffering a heart-attack. In 1980, on the 10th of October, his physical state worsened during a course for instructors. He was taken to the hospital where two days later he suffered a cerebral embolism that kept him unconscious for three months, reducing his weight to only 37 kg. He regained consciousness January 7, 1981 as a kind of premonition and good-bye before his definitive departure. He died of pneumonia the next day at the age of 68, leaving an invaluable legacy to all the Karate-do practitioners in the world. Now, were the Budokas of the world prepared to receive this legacy, or are they now? Just before his death, Sensei Egami left some writings that despite the years that have gone by, haven’t lost their freshness and invite one to reflect. “The advances of civilization allow us to enjoy a comfortable and easy life. Youth has the enormous advantage of having these advances within their reach. Unfortunately, once accustomed to comfort, young people are incapable of reflecting on the fact that in each advance there are implicitly many y e a r s o f re s e arch and sacrifices. They d o n ’t

consider it and their mentality is weak… The youth of today have nothing to do with those of before. They don’t want to work hard. They want to reach the goal without making any effort, taking the easy road… My young students share that weakness with the boys of their age. They should go back to t h o s e t r a i n i n g s e s s i o n s u n t i l f a l l i n g down exhausted in order to understand and value the a d v a n c e s a c h i e v e d b y t h e m a s t e r s . B u t who worries about that? Many of them come to visit me, they shut up and don’t ask anything. They only look at me and try to imitate me. Sincerely, I don’t understand what they want from me. It seems that the only important thing is the times that they visit me. The one who speaks is always me and in the end I wind up sad and exhausted… The technique of Irimi must be practiced with determination and a strong mental disposition in the face of any kind of attack by the opponent. However, young people practice it without that mentality, without that spirit, merely converting it into a way of evading. If in training I correct them or criticize them, they become mute and some don’t even come back to train. Aren’t there any young people left willing to search for the truth with constancy, without any kind of discouragement and with enthusiasm to learn?” Egami, just like other masters, marked out a path. Who will be capable of following it?

Commando Krav Maga has proven popular with many other martial arts instructors around the world, from various schools, who wish to enhance their own abilities and provide a reality based fighting system to their existing students that is both accessible and dependable. “Simplicity is genius is Moni's catchphrase but this trademark humility belies the work and thought which has to be done to distill anything to its core essence. Now suitably refined, this is a system which is suitable for, and accessible to, both teachers and their students. Military and civilian sectors. The experienced and the novice. This is because, quite simply, it works. It is based on fundamental principles and practices which, if adhered to, and with a little luck, will keep you safer on the street. So maybe it's time to take what ever you know onto another level. In this new DVD, Moni Aizik teaches us in all detail how to solve various situations that can usually occur in the street: kinfe attacks, punches, threats from the back with a knife or a gun and holding our hand, various examples on the ground as knife attacks or situations in which the aggressor applies us an Armbar or a Triangle, and how to solve weapon threatening situations against third parties.

The Deadly Mantis Emerges! Bamboo Forest Southern Mantis is a style of Kung Fu originating from Southern China. There are many sub-lineages of the Southern Mantis Kung Fu, and the Bamboo Forest tradition is perhaps the most secretive and esoteric of all. Though bits and pieces have thus far been seen by the public on occasion, the essence of this deadly style had always been taught behind closed doors. This unusual martial art was developed specifically for urban combat. It has no fancy movements, flying kicks or forms that have you running across an entire courtyard. Like Wing Chun, it is meant for closed-quarters fighting. But unlike Wing Chun, each and every strike in this art is aimed at a vital point or a combination of acupuncture points, for causing maximum damage. Like Krav Maga, each and every movement in this system is solely focused on practical self-defense. But unlike Krav Maga, the system has a sophisticated curriculum for both body and mind, which includes skills for developing explosive powers, internal movement for controlling opponents, breath-work, Iron Body methods, meditation, healing, and much more. One of the most important things Bamboo Forest Mantis can teach, is how to use the extremes of Hardness and Softness. When touching an opponent, the practitioner can feel to him like a granite rock, or like a silk thread, and interchange between these within a fraction of a second. This is very challenging to contend with. Even beginners in the

system can do such things. Later is learned how to make half the body soft, and half hard, and switch between these! The adversary is overwhelmed by such an ability. These skills are learned via energetic practices of hard and soft Qi Gong, unique to this system, which are unlike those of other martial arts. They make the body’s tendons like steel cables, and the skin like thick, impenetrable rubber. Upon feeling-up the seasoned practitioner’s flesh, one could tell that such development is surprising and unnatural. The transitions between hardness and softness are accompanied by the use of explosive short powers. Some martial arts can release a strike from close range. Bamboo Forest Mantis can issue several strikes in quick succession from distance of less than an inch, each. Be him either defensive or offensive, the practitioner will overwhelm the opponent with a flurry of devastating striking combinations. Just when you think you have blocked, trapped, or contained him, the trained practitioner explodes with exacting inch power. Through the system, one learns how to strike with every part of the body, and a wide variety of surfaces are used to that effect. ‘Normal’ punches are not used in this martial art! Instead, the staple is the PhoenixEye Fist and its variations, which are hardened to be able to penetrate any obstacle. In order to apply such useful techniques, the system uses tight circles and spiral to control a fighting scenario. These special mechanics are barely seen from afar, but can be felt dramatically upon touch, with shocking results. Even seemingly straight motions, contain circles and spirals within them. This makes the practitioner impossible to grab or hold, and the opponent’s attacks bounce off one’s body with ease. Circles and spirals are taught via the scheme of using three heights and three gates, which is also unique to this system in the manner in which it is taught and applied. The countless circles, spirals, short powers and techniques, are taught via four types of methods: solo drills, forms, partner drills, and sparring. The system follows the rule that any movement practiced must be directly applicable for combat, and the practitioners are noted for being able to use their art like they train it. Bamboo Forest Mantis is a complete martial art, in the sense that it covers all types of scenarios and needs for holistic living. In training, one addresses the body and mind, the aerobic and anaerobic, the hard and the soft. In combat, it has answers for striking, grappling, throwing, takedowns and even ground-fighting. It includes both the destructive, through the martial skills, and the constructive, by teaching healthpreservation and healing. The last grand-master of our Bamboo Forest Mantis lineage, Henry Poo Yee, passed away in old age early in 2018AD. During the years before his passing, it was grand-master Henry’s wish that that his disciples would carry on the system for the next generations. Sifu Sapir Tal, one of grandmaster Henry’s senior disciples, have therefore decided to open the gates of Bamboo Forest Mantis to newcomers from outside his own school in Israel, and for the first time to teach this exceptional martial art abroad. Master Bruno Tombolato is chairman and founder of the Shaolin Cultural Center Spain and the SAN WEI Center of Chinese Culture in Madrid. His secular name is Shi Xing Jing - 释 行 净 -, which represents the thirty-second generation of the Shaolin Temple in Songshan, and that was bestowed on him by his Shifu, Grand Master Shi De Yang, of whom he is a direct disciple. With more than 30 years devoted to Chinese Martial Arts, in this his first DVD, Master Tombolato presents us with a series of essential techniques of Shaolin Kung Fu that will help the practitioner to obtain the mastery of fundamental Shaolin Jibengong, also essential for the development of higher level forms. For this reason, all this set of techniques must be trained by both beginners and advanced students alike. This first pedagogical work seeks to enrich the practitioner with the essence of the Shaolin art, so that he can connect with those concepts that will serve as a guide both in practice and in teaching.

In this new DVD of Vovinam, Patrick Levet has wanted to show the facets of the use and handling of the Vietnamese Stick. Although little known, the Vietnamese long stick is, without a doubt, the most important weapon among all the weapons of the traditional Martial Arts of Vietnam. The Vovinam school, in its official program, only proposes the Stick Form (Tu Tuong Con Phap) and the counterattacks of stick vs. stick (Phan Don), without explaining the intermediate movements. But the Vietnamese stick goes far beyond these two facets and Master Levet offers us 2 detailed DVDs on all the applications of the numerous intermediate movements of the Stick Quyen. In this second volume, Levet executes the Quyen Tu Tuong Con Phap, and explains in detail the Phan Don counterattacks 1-12, and the 39 techniques and applications contained in the form, including those for intermediate moves. An original work that shows for the first time the Vietnamese stick in a complete and exhaustive way.

The Forge of Art Bizen Osafune

Photo: Takemi Nishi

About 600 km southwest of Tokyo we find Osafune's municipality, in the city of Setouchi, which houses the important Bizen Osafune Japanese Swords Museum. Many of the high quality swords that are preserved in Japan today were forged in this region and are known as "Bizen swords". They sum up to half the swords declared National Treasure, and several of them can be admired in the Museum, which also brings together different craftsmen specialized in this ancient tradition. Japanese swords, that represent the art of forging at its finest, and are very much appreciated for their unparalleled beauty, are also highly esteemed as protective amulets.

The Japanese Swords of Bizen Osafune: Centuries of Tradition and Art This talk is an introduction to the little-known world of Japanese swords, and it's meant for people interested in Japanese culture, art and / or Martial Arts, but who are not necessarily familiar with this aspect of Japanese culture. One of the main objectives of the talk is to change the image that many persons might have of Japanese swords. Today, Japanese swords are no longer weapons, but masterpieces in themselves. Our talk begins with an explanation of the deep relationship that existed back in those days between the samurai and his sword. It was not a mere weapon for them but a symbol of power, authority and honesty. As the talk goes on, the tone and the focus thereof change: we move away from the samurai and the martial aspect of the swords, and get closer to the swordsmen and craftsmen who make this artwork.

I begin by explaining why and how the Japanese swords we have today were created, and what makes Japanese swords so special and unique in the world. In this part, a complete picture of the manufacturing process will be exposed through a simple description of the forging process, followed by an interview with a qualified Japanese swordsmith, and a video that introduces each of the artisans (and their respective work) that are involved in the creation of these masterpieces and who most often are less known than sword makers.

I end with an explanation of the artistic elements of a sword, especially the hamon, the blade collar, and the sword guard, and why the region of Bizen, where the city of Setouchi is located, known as the "cradle of the Japanese swords", was so prominent in the production of Japanese swords. Before finishing the talk, I mention the Bizen Osafune unrivalled museum of Japanese swords, emphasizing its important mission, now more crucial than ever, of preserving such precious regional legacy, transmitting this millenary knowledge to future generations, and promoting the purchase and sale of new swords. Today there are fewer and fewer swordsmiths and craftsmen specialized in Japanese swords. It's an ancient art that is dying. So it's imperative to familiarize a broader public with the art represented by the Japanese sword and raise awareness about the actual risk faced by this essential part of Japanese culture. On October 23, 2018, the city of Setouchi will organize an event about Japanese swords

and their manufacturing process at Casa Asia, Barcelona, Spain, within the framework of the 150th anniversary of Spain-Japan Diplomatic Relations. As already mentioned, Setouchi houses the Bizen Osafune Museum of Japanese Swords. It was built with the aim of preserving the millenary techniques of this craft, which is one of the symbols of Japanese art, and transmitting it to future generations. It is the only public museum in Japan where only Japanese swords are displayed, and which offers visitors the opportunity to observe craftsmen working on the several components of the swords in the premises art studios. The city produced last year a short video to publicize the Katana manufacturing process with the aim of raising public awareness around the world of the high technique and

extraordinary skills of Katana artisans. With the courtesy of the General Consulate of Japan in Barcelona, they posted the video in their Facebook wall and it was very well received among the users. www.facebook.com/consuladojaponbarcelona/ videos/879844608851002/ After this success, the Consulate proposed us to organize an outreach event about the Katana craftsmanship and construction, for the Commemoration in Barcelona of 150th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Spain, and so we have been preparing for the happening.
