The work with this film is a primer in the difference between Kyusho and Dim Mak, as they are not based on the same targets. It is a continuation of the 6-Ji Hands and Iron Shirt study and films available through Budo International. The 6 Ji Hands that are prevalent throughout an art called Pangai-Noon or Uechi Ryu. It is one of the very few styles that contain and focus on these specific hand positions to get to the Deeper Tissue of the body. This film shows the use of hands not as bludgeons, but rather daggers with the transitional torqueing type power utilized in the 6 Ji Hands* to properly use Kyusho‌ this is a missing facet in most Kyusho practitioners skill sets. 8 KO's (including compression and blood KO's). In this DVD set, works the seemingly simple Sanchin Kata through 8 stages of fighting skill (a complete Martial System in one Kata with Iron Shirt methods as well). he brutal wave of acceleration in which we recurrently live in our days, unparalleled in human history, generates a scenario of extraordinary wear and tear. Everything of yesterday today is expired, obsolete... worn out. People keep surfing on the surface of things, jumping from wave to wave, from flower to flower; like inconsistent, banal butterflies and consequently fragile; savoring sugary doses of syrupy knowledge that are not but sentimental, fanciful and convenient self-satisfactions of immediate gratification, like an immense adrenaline rush of rapid resolution and immediate execution. Paraphrasing Queen: "We want it all! ... And we want it ... Now!" From symptomatic medicine, pills that have immediate effect (we just can't stand pain, we suppress it no matter how small it might be!), even in the Express relations, where the other is reified, current times impose speed and acceleration in every field. But life is not a fast food restaurant, and wisdom and true knowledge are not acquired in this way. No one, however, can flee his environment. We are inserted in a specific bubble and in a determined time, where the abundance of information is confused with true formation. Content and continent are intermingled, essence and brilliance overlap, appear and exchange ... As an old Spanish poem goes:

T

"In this treacherous world nothing is true or a lie. All depends of the color of the glass through which you look." Having a degree doesn't imply knowing about something, but that the person has attended University. Camilo José Cela said that we should go to University even if it was only to walk along its corridors and end up in the billiards. With his usual sarcasm, the ingenious Nobel warned us about "titulitis" and the need to go through the forums of wisdom, especially to know university laurels are not what people believe it to be. In Martial Arts there has always been an extraordinary effort and commitment to metabolize brutality and dignify it. It is normal that a means, whose primary function was to manage violence, required measures of self-control, confinement and finally the dignifying thereof. The tinsel of the soldiers in dress uniform, clearly exemplify this will, as well as the parades and the indispensable rituals that surround a world which, devoid of all this, would appear scary and merciless. The very function of the military and the police is not glamorous, quite the contrary, it's bloody

and terrible, but we can't imagine a world without them, because human nature is a rosary of dangerous intentions. And if you, dear "goodism doers" and “wellmeaning people” don’t believe that, simply withdraw the police from the street for just one day and see what happens. It's no secret that Martial Arts pedagogy, especially in the East, differs greatly from the Western way of teaching. The "train crash" took place when the first Eastern Masters settled in the West. I lived in first person the remains of the above mentioned clash of intellects and the fertile years that followed such an encounter, and what in the beginning had been a perfect dialog of the deaf, exploded in an enormous creativity, which turned the Disciplinary Oriental Arts into an activity to a planetary level. The negative side is that on the one hand, there were many uninformed teachers who shone simply because they had slanted eyes, or because, as the old saying goes, "in a country of blind men, the one-eyed man is king"; on the other hand, those who really knew got tired of trying the impossible: to transplant Kung Fu or Budo on a different scenario and to a different "species". You can't put the heart of a pig to a human and vice versa. Results have been mixed, but nobody can deny that they are there. On the other hand, let's not forget, there also exist the problem of anachronism, a quasiinsurmountable obstacle for the Orientals themselves, who rarely have been able to metabolize it, either by their natural submission to the Master, or by lack of questioning; or even by "the lack of the necessary wicker to knit such a basket". On the other hand, many well-meaning Westerners got disappointed with the discredit of their teachers, many of them with just a scanty and superficial knowledge of the art they pretended to master. Others, the majority, simply never became interested in anything beyond what concerns violence. When there was a Master, there was no disciple and vice versa. The numerous disagreements and misunderstandings left an immense remnant of frustrations on both sides; it's enough to talk to some pioneers to discover, scratching a little the surface of their speech, the consequences of the clash. Current generations have found an even more diffuse framework, if that is possible. The polarization of the martial context, however much it has clarified the contents and stressed out the trends of every practice in their primary interests, be these self-defense, effectiveness, its using as healthy practices, competition,

“Dignity, honor, character, sacrifice, are today words that only serve to embellish the frontispiece of the martial Agora, but their meaning has vanished in the haste, consumerism, convenience and comfort of our days.â€? Art, or any of its multiple facets, has completely distorted and betrayed its essence and primordial forms. Few are the ancient schools that manage to thrive in this scenario, because nobody is willing to face the commitments involved in its study. The "martial fast food" brings a new way of looking at an eternal theme, where syncretism is trend and the "anything goes" is rampant. I am not nostalgic and I think that any time gone by was‌ simply previous, in the words of "Les Luthiers", but I like to point out the differences in these times of confusion. Believing to know is not knowing! True knowledge calls for of a long and unavoidably slow learning and, as an indispensable factor... someone who really knows. The loss of information and its modification throughout the centuries, the constant adaptation to new moments, to new times, is in itself a natural and unstoppable process, however that isn't the worst loss that we witness, but the denaturalization of the primary truths that made these paths big, because the scenario of present times produces people reluctant to any deep effort. A simple sweet quickly eliminates hunger, and there isn't much hunger left for these subjects, just an appetite that must be immediately satiated or the student will take another road. Dignity, honor, character, sacrifice, are today words that only serve to embellish the frontispiece of the martial Agora, but their meaning has vanished in the haste, consumerism, convenience and comfort of our days. But friends, not everything is lost, because there have always been and there will always be those who swim against the tide. The true way is and always has been something for only a few, and among so many idiots, there is always one who wakes up in the middle of the night of ignorance and wants to pay the price, because stupidity cannot be absolute and because evolution itself demands that raw diamonds appear in the quagmire of vulgarity ... We will find you!

Philippines Martial Arts

Introduction By Tim Fredianelli Full Instructor Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Kapisanang Mandirigma, Lameco SOG & Kali Ilustrisimo Representative for Spain

LAMECO S.O.G – KALI ILUSTRISIMO As a student and Instructor of Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Martial Arts I had always asked myself why great grandmasters such as Dan Inosanto and many more distinguished Instructors in the USA after many years of training and investigating Filipino Martial Arts were fascinated after a training session with Punong Guro Sulite and became his students. Hereafter my studies, investigation and search for Lameco Eskrima, Kalis Ilustrisimo and their teachers. After many trips and sponsoring many seminars I found what I was looking for in Guro Dino Flores.

Philippines Martial Arts He has tried to pass unnoticed for too long. Very few Filipino Martial Artists have a background and experience like his. His only desire is to keep the teachings of the LAMECO BACKYARD ESKRIMA TRAINING and KALI ILUSTRISIMO as pure as they were passed down to him by three different magnificent Pillars of Ilustrisimo, and give the new generations of students the opportunity to taste first hand how it feels to train straight under Great Grandmasters such as Punong Guro Sulite, Grandmaster Ricketts, Grandmaster Antonio Diego, Grandmaster Yuli Romo, Grandmaster Rey Galang and Grandmaster Olavides of the GM Caballero's De Campo Uno, Dos, Tres Orihinal System. Guro Dino was one of Punong Guro Edgar Sulite favorite fighters from the Infamous Lameco Backyard Group. Besides the hundreds of hours of sparring in Punong Guro Sulites Backyard, Guro Dino also experienced sparring at Master Ricketts Backyard in the Philippines, WEKAF and was one of the first SOG members to try out the Dog Brothers gathering on a number of occasions. Guro Dino was personally trained by Punong Guro to be a fighter above all else. Even accepting challenges on Punong Guro Sulite’s behalf in live stick challenges. He is also an Authorized Instructor under Grandmaster Christopher Ricketts and Grandmaster Antonio Diego. He has also had the good fortune to train with all Five Pillars of Ilustrisimo. He is currently the director and an Instructor of the Kapisanang Mandirigma Institute founded by members of Lameco S.O.G. This interview is worth reading! Find out for yourself why Lameco S.O.G. and Kali Ilustrisimo is respected in the Martial Art World. By Tim Fredianelli Budo International Reporter 1. What was it like to be trained to defend your lineage honor at such a young age? I was in my mid twenties at the time so there is a tendency at that time to think you know more than you actually do during that general age. Over 20 years ago now. Defending anything wasn't exactly in our mind. We just really enjoyed the experience of training with a highly developed master. Whenever there was an issue it was because someone was out of line and rude. It was just a natural reaction for us to want to back up our friend and teacher. We were all a lot more aggressive and really enjoyed fighting in those youthful days. Therefore it just felt natural. Like it was where I was meant to be there at that point of my life. We were training 3 to 4 times a week. Punong Guro lived only about 10 minutes away from my home. Plus my room mate and cousin Choy Flores was a member of the Backyard Group. As was my neighbor in the same building Hans Tan. Also living in the neighborhood were other Lameco Backyard members Bud Balani, Arnold Noche, Jay Ariatico, Wayne Ylanan and others. There was always someone to spar or train with. It became my a big part of my life at the time. I was just savoring the experience. I miss those days tremendously. Looking back, the real time fighting principals

Philippines Martial Arts Punong Guro taught me in those early days are the ones that have proven the best in sparring and a few real life situations. I only realized after his passing that he had to teach up this way because we were willing to stick our neck our, even if it was sometimes foolhardy. Reference to those lessons are in everything I have learned and taught since. As time goes on it becomes more so. B.I.: How is the training different from mainstream LAMECO AND SOG Filipino backyard group? Guro Dino Flores.: The mainstream Lameco and The Lameco SOG Group curriculums in beginning are pretty much the same. Same salutation, general history, 12 strikes, footwork, blocks and combinations. However the Backyard Curriculum later proceeds to go deeper in everything such fighting strategies and origins. There was heavy emphasis on application of the art in real time. Plus hundreds of hours of sparring. Sparring single stick, double stick, knife and multiple opponent. From light to full blast with any tools allowed. We were also taught things than Punong Guro Sulite considered

Philippines Martial Arts “Secrets” that we swore we would treasure and be selective about whom we taught. To this day I still have internal debates about what I can share and what I cannot. The objective of the differences in training was to bring you to a level where you had enough skills to back up your art in sparring or a challenge. However in both approaches, Self defense and defense of your loved ones was always the number one concern. 3. Did PG have a mainstream teaching curriculum and an only fighting curriculum for the loyal members? Guro Dino Flores.: Yes he did. Both curriculums focused on foundations and combative drills. Essentially the same base knowledge for both groups. The differences with the Backyard Group was more real time testing, deeper explanations and more advanced progressions. Mastery of fundamentals was the base of both curriculums. But with the Backyard group it was extremely repetitious and intense drilling till your hands literally bleed and peel. The hard work was the public system, making the art more palatable without losing the real world practicality. Also the public practitioners generally sought new and exciting drills while the Backyard focused mainly on Mastery of fundementals. Repetition and intensity did not really appeal to most people. Fancy drilling and flowing is way more fun for the average practitioner. However according to Punong Guro Sulite and Master Ricketts it was the basic techniques that occurred the most in actual fighting. The more Punong Guro trusted you, the more secrets he would share. Secrets were usually techniques that have been proven in real life. Most of the lessons came from the hundreds of hours of sparring. Plus after each session Punong Guro would give us notes on what to work on. Strengths, weaknesses and thing we should attempt or experiment with. Besides notes he would also give me video tapes to further illustrate his points. he was always refining you. At the end of the day we had to be able at a level to accept a challenge. I love all the elements of the art such as drilling, aesthetics and clear explanation of the art etc. But unfortunately this is not the main thing that is going to make you win a fight. It is sparring, and lots of hours of it. Winning some and losing some. Getting your ego and reality checked. Honest and objective assessment of your performance. There is no teacher like being on the receiving end of a well executed technique. But most of all

a well seasoned coach such as Punong Guro Sulite and Master Christopher Ricketts. As Master Christopher Ricketts frequently said, "we are fighting school". 4. How were the training sessions during SOG? Guro Dino Flores.: At one point we were training 3 to 4 times a week. About 3 hours on weekdays and 6 to 8 hours on Sundays. We always opened with the basics and fundamentals. After stretches and warmups we would do basic strikes, combos and a lot of footwork. After that we would analyze and drill a particular part of the massive curriculum Punong Guro felt we should work on. frequently we would do all things with intensity and focus until exhaustion. Realistic conditioning was emphasized. He really pushed us to excel, and we loved it. A times we had visitors that were interested in joining and were given the green light. However when they saw the intensity, especially in sparring they decided not to join. It clearly wasn't for everybody. If we were preparing for a challenge we would adjust the training to the situation. Thus sometimes we would review punching, kicking and grappling attacks and defenses. Then we would include it in our sparring. In general we were just going for it. Injuries were not uncommon, but we loved it anyway and came back for more. One of the most important lesson I got was that you have to win some and you lose some during the learning process. I have given and received a long list of weapons and empty hands attacks. Lessons that no drills can ever give you. Punong Guro Sulite would often tell us that it is better to learn from your mistakes during sparring sessions rather than in a real fight. 5. When did he start to trust and open up to more western students? Guro Dino Flores.: It didn’t take long. Once he had a number of us that were “Lameco first and foremost”, the group opened up to students that were trustworthy and loyal to Punong Guro and knew how to conduct themselves in a way he was comfortable with. Time and time again I witnessed cultural differences which led to misunderstandings. What might be acceptable in one culture might be rude in another. Same old story. I have seen it with Punong Guro, Master Ricketts and have experienced it a few times with myself. Numerous times

Philippines Martial Arts Punong Guro and later Master Ricketts would vent with some of us and occasionally some of us were utilized to fix it. It was a tremendous education in communication and behavior. My advice to students studying the FMA from a teacher from the Philippines is to take time to understand manners, etiquette and respect from a Filipino perspective. Stop assuming things and mind your tongue. Another big error I see is students mistaking Filipino hospitality and friendliness for weakness. The focus should be on training and not petty drama and stupidity. Serious students should take the time to learn the culture behind the art. 6. How did you thing PG developed his FMA after living in the states? What was his evolution during this phase of his life? Guro Dino Flores.: Although there was a deep and reverent respect for the old ways and traditions, they were not adverse to technology and innovation in the art. In the United States the sparring method evolved to suit

the time and place. There was a greater possibility of lawsuits due to injury in the United States as compared to the Philippines so this was always kept in mind. Additionally it was the early 1990’s and most of the group started to have a deeper knowledge of grappling, kicking and punching from various arts. The majority of the group already had extensive martial arts experience. These factors were accounted for in sparring and training. I wouldn't call it an evolution though, because the original methods were developed for live stick or blade, no rules, no protection. I have sparred live stick and have hit bare skull, broken ribs and smashed finger nails off. In each instance the fight was over immediately. I don't suggest anyone try it, but that is the reality. Another reality is that a good portion of middle and close quarter techniques can only be pulled off by very few during sparring. At the end of the day we were taught that both scenarios are important. The group consisted of a wide variety of ages, skill levels, experiences, backgrounds and personalities. On top of

fighting members of, we always had visitors from the Lameco International organization as well as other visitors. Naturally we had to spar them as well. Each and every one of my fights was an education as 99% of the people that visited the Lameco Backyard was skill in some form of the martial arts. 7. Did he receive a lot of challenges in the states? How did he manage them? Guro Dino Flores.: Punong Guro had many challenges in the States. As far as I know only one was done in public. However most of the time he would try to be as subtle as possible and do it behind closed doors as not to publicly humiliate them. Punong Guro Sulite dominated everyone he encountered in the USA. Many times it was just due to over blown egos and rude behavior. Thus he he just punished them without permanently damaging them. Punong Guro was taught death match style, so this would of been easy in a live weapon, no gear, no rules situation. Punong Guro Sulite was a very kind person, so in some cases they became close friends if the person had the right attitude in defeat. 8. At what level was Lameco as an art develope both mainstream teaching and as a fighting style and training for fighting style when PG passed away?

Philippines Martial Arts Guro Dino Flores.: Lameco was already a fully developed fighting art while still in the Philippines, as it is descended from some of the finest the land has to offer. It was made and refined from real combat and real death matches. Primarily from the Grandmaster Ilustrisimo and Grandmaster Caballero lineages. As for his mainstream teaching. It was mostly completed in the Philippines, but got some additions and refinements in the United States. The USA and particularly Los Angeles is one of the worlds centers of Martial Arts. It is natural to pick up a few ideas in such a place. One addition to the art in the USA was an addition to our sparring curriculum. Sometime we had regular sparring with live stick and headgear, but anything goes. By anything the inclusion of kicks, knees, elbows, punches, throws, takedown and grappling. But this will always be of secondary importance to the original objectives of the art, effective real world self defense and offense. 9. How did you feel when this happened? Guro Dino Flores.: Los Angeles was definitely in tune with the early days of the MMA revolution. So most of us were well exposed in one way or another. In Eskrima when you put on a helmet and protection it totally

Philippines Martial Arts changes the game. You have a better chance of striking or wrestling an opponent without getting permanently injured. So this is where the addition to the sparring curriculum was developed and added. Besides being a lot of fun, it took my understanding of the art to another level.

PRESENTATION BY GURO DINO FLORES of HIS THIRD DVD FOR BUDO INTERNATIONAL DVD PRESENTATION PRESENTACION DE DVD ESCRITA POR GURO DINO FLORES. Titulo: KALI ILUSTRISIMO – LABAN LARO DRILLS -DVD 3 Before moving to the United States, Punong Guro Edgar Sulite travelled throughout Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao on a quest to research his beloved art. Besides seeking the best the arts had to offer, the information was for his book "Masters of Arnis, Kali and Eskrima". This was a landmark book published by Master Alex Co and assisted by the other Five Pillars of Ilustrisimo. It was the first time a researcher traveled and trained throughout the Philippine islands and compiled the findings in a book. This book opened up numerous Masters

Philippines Martial Arts and Systems to the rest of the world outside of their province of origin. It influenced the majority of general Eskrima books and documentaries that came after it. Punong Guro Sulite interviewed and trained with many legendary masters of Eskrima. He even went to Grandmaster Ilustrisimo's hometown on Bantayan Island to seek the roots of that art. On Bantayan island he got to train with other members of the Ilustrisimo clan. When Punong Guro Sulite got back to Manila, Master Christopher Ricketts asked him who he though was the best among all he trained with after his journey around the Philippines. Punong Guro responded that even the original Ilustrisimo family system on Bantayan Island "was not the same as Tatang's". He said that when it came to the blade, no one could compare to Grandmaster Antonio Ilustrisimo. The art of Ilustrisimo is a truly refined sword art system. It is efficient, direct and functional. It is full of subtle movements, strategic positioning and superior timing. It can appear simple, but when attempted, becomes complex. But the true beauty dwell in it's effectiveness and functionality. The Kali Ilustrisimo Laban Laro drills were put together by members of Punong Guro Edgar Sulite and Master Christopher Ricketts Los Angeles, California and Las Vegas, Nevada groups also known as Kapisanang Mandirigma. They first were first introduced to Kali Ilustrisimo in the Lameco Eskrima Backyard over 20 years ago and have not stopped training since. These drills are based on Kapisanang Mandirigma's experience in training with the Five Pillars of Ilustrisimo and some of their senior students. However it is primarily based on the Kali Ilustrisimo method of Master Christopher Ricketts. These drills have several levels to them. This DVD contains the first of several levels. Laban Laro means to "play" or "simulate" fighting. This DVD goes over a number of techniques from the Art of Grandmaster Ilustrisimo and put into combative drills by Kapisanang Mandirigma. From the experience of Kapisanang Mandirigma, Grandmaster Ilustrisimo did not have a large arsenal of drills. Those were mostly created by the students. The way the Five Pillars learned was to feed an attack towards their Grandmaster and he would thus respond. After which the other members would write it down. In order to understand the art more, the Pillars would create drills based on what Grandmaster Ilustrisimo would do. These drills by Kapisanang Mandirigma are based on their lessons from their teachers. They were put together as an additional tool to help their own students refine, analyze and tighten their movements. Bust most of all, make them think and take them out of their comfort zone. The previous DVDs from Guro Dino Flores dealt with more range transition, intensity, impact, directness, instinct and its relationship to real time sparring. This DVD goes more into medium range - positioning, flow, analysis and timing. All are important to getting a deeper understanding of the art. This DVD is dedicated to all of Guro Dino's teachers in this art. Punong Guro Edgar Sulite first introduced him to the art. He in turn introduced Guro Dino to his Primary Kali Ilustrisimo teacher, Master Christopher Ricketts. The majority of the techniques in this DVD were first taught to Guro Dino by Master Christopher Ricketts and his sons Brandon and Bruce. Master Tony Diego took Guro Dino´s understanding even further, also with the assistance of some his students - Hans, Peachie and Arnold. Additional valuable insights were gained from Master Yuli Romo and Master Rey Galang. Most of all it is dedicated to his teachers of my teacher, Grandmaster Antonio Ilustrisimo himself. Who originated the art we practice and enjoy today. This DVD is another step in a journey that lasts a lifetime.

Jeet Kune Do The importance of the bases At a time when people are impressed by action movies and confuse cinema and martial arts, It can be stupid and useless to work the bases whereas every one want to see spetacular techniques. To build an apartment block very high, you must have fondations which will be able to support the load. It is identical for the martial arts and combat sports, It is absolutely essential to revise and to improve our bases every day in order to be able to express ourselves perfectly. It is unrealistic to think that we can execute a complicated technique without having « perfect bases ». All the complicated techniques are only a serie of simple techniques . If we are not able to move easily and hit in the same way, no technique will ever become efficient. A boxer is always going to work his bases as the jab, the cross, the hook, etc...

T

hese techniques seem to be simple and easy to assimilate, and however the boxers work these techniques every day and then are able to enchaine very fastly with power and efficiency

these hits. Everybody can notice the formidable efficiency of a boxer on the ring , yet people forget that hits enchaines and executed by the boxer are the result of a very hard work of the bases. In our consumer society, people want everything, now and easily, the bases work is so useless for many new martial artist from our modern society. When I began the martial arts , all the martial artists wanted to train strongly and to revise the bases in order to make precise, efficient and powerful hits. In order to ensure this, we worked for hours a simple hit or a simple kick to improve it until we got a maximum efficiency. We never complained, we never called ours teachers' recommendations into question. Now, lot of martial artists are only looking for becoming masters in the least time possible and so shining in front of others. But, as far as I know, the practice of martial arts and combat sports is only aimed at knowing ourself , surpassing ourself, always stretching our own limits,etc... I have never heard that our practice aimed at flattering our ego, impressing others and choreographing for the cinema, otherwise I will not have ever practiced. Of course, I respect the stuntmen in the action movies because it is a very hard job, where people work their bases assiduously. What I do not understand is people who practice combat sports without working bases but they only want to do extrordinary and spectacular techniques without being able to hit or kick correctly.

Jeet Kune Do What is funny is that the easiest technique as a jab ( the first technique we learn) is also the most complicated. Indeed, in Jun Fan Gung Fu, we call it SDA ( single direct attack), however this simple hit so difficult to acquire for a new student is the most advanced technique because each martial artist dreams and hope to be able to knock out an opponent in tournament or in case of an aggression. This technique which seems so simple and so futile is in fact an impossible base to avoid in our pratical. So we realize that a student who learns quickly this technique in order to pass to complicated series but only visual one, without ever reworking or improving this base all along his life, but he will not have any efficency in his series of hits. For many persons, it does not matter because they do not look for efficency but only want to reproduce action movies which goal are to entertain and impress audience members. It is not disturbing because each person has his own objectives through his practical, but where it becomes dangerous is that more and more of these martial artists claim to be efficient and lies to their students promising to them invincibility as in the movies. However, nobody is invincible, and promising impracticable things is very dangerousbecause the student can take risks because he will be convinced to be a warrior flawless. Unfortunately, he will not be able to defend himself in a case of confrontation without having worked constantly the martial bases. Few years ago, I had two young students who came to one of my lessons in order to know if my teaching was convenient to them During all the lesson, they were not be able to make an acceleration or a simple hit correctly.

Jeet Kune Do At the end of the lesson, they came and saw me to ask me if we were going to do some somersaults or others acrobatics, I answered them that to acquire a flexibility of a body, these acrobatics stuff could be an interesting tool, but if they only wanted to do gymnastics, they should go to gymnastics lessons. They were shocked by my answer, and I have never seen them since. Martial arts and combat sports must be a tool to allow you to progress with honesty and taking the necessary time to acquire the bases with efficiency which can allow to anyone to express ourself. Unfortunately, it is not ever the case for many martial artists who want to leapfrog and get everything in one sports season. The evidence being, twenty years ago, it was necessary several years to get a black belt in martial arts . Nowadays, you become a black belt in 2 or 3 years which doen not mean to anything. Even worst, modern disciplines black belts 5th dan or 6th dan hand over fist. These grades which were equivalent to a life of practical and which rewarded years of effort and of surpassing ourself, became a due and belong now to the norm The shocking thing is that we attend more and more young martial artists who had a revelation, and who create their martial arts style after 2 years of practical at a rate of once by week of attendance in their hall sport with their teacher. Let's get serious, how can we create something from nothing or just a part of the bases that we only begin to glimpse. It is as if a student in last year of nursery school, created another school system after having been in first year and second year of nursery school. Let's get serious, acquiring the necessary bases is going to require years of practical and all our life, these bases must be improved and reworked in order to be able to use them with efficiency. Building a 100 storey apartment block on a lump of sugar cannot be done, and everyone is aware of that because everything will fall down. It is the same for the martial arts, if our base is like a lump of sugar, we will not ever be able to express ourself decently. We can explore lot of arts and combat sports but it is necessary to practice a discipline constantly in order to work our bases and so be able to understand and to progress in all others disciplines. Do not be utopian claiming that flitting around disciplines to another during 6 months in a year, we will be able to acquire strong bases. Let's get diamond merchant who polishes and exploites the best part of a diamond and not a forger who claims having a diamond instead of a trivial simple stone .

The Column of RaĂşl GutiĂŠrrez OUR CONSTANT SEARCH "IF YOU DO NOT TRUST YOURSELF, IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE VICTORY." Last night, chatting with some friends in the desser t talk after dinner, we got engaged in a fluid conversation about Motorcycling, Auto racing and other sports. They were well-informed on the subject and it was quite interesting hearing them talk about it, especially because I couldn't add much to the conversation. Focused on Martial Arts since my adolescence, I've never been a fan of other sports or sportsmen. But I certainly had the chance to give my opinion regarding genetics, the marked trends of our earlier infancy and other similar matters. In his pursuit of perfection, the human being often walks a long and winding path, full of difficulties and limits, imposed by his subconscious or by his own body. Or even by his destiny and the setbacks of fortune. During my life, I have known people without an appropriate physical aesthetics, or who apparently were "good for nothing", however, and that's something we often see, at the moment of truth, little or nothing influences the hidden talent they carry inside and that when it manifests, it usually leaves us with our mouth wide open and makes our hair stand on end.

The Column of Raúl Gutiérrez met, for example, Jon Fanning (RIP), in Dublin, Ireland in 1977; being rather "chubby", he didn't look a sportsman, much less a martial artist. He even neglected his attire as Teacher or Master in his Ming Chuan Kung-Fu School of Dublin. He went on wearing a simple t-shirt and a threadbare, worn out and even torn pair of pants. He was in the habit of directing the training sessions comfortably sat on a simple chair. The students followed his guidelines with great enthusiasm and they all trained hard and without stopping. That surprised me greatly. I had never seen anything like that before. I've always been respectful with people and, in this case, with styles, and so I stayed to witness his entire class. We ended up chatting nicely and went out to eat a "tremendously spicy food" that I will never forget. Thus was born a great friendship between Jon and me. Fanning was actually a Great Martial Artist, one of the best I’ve ever met in my life and martial career. His technique, efficiency and high knowledge really amazed me, and the same happened to all those who met him through me. Just like Grand Master Robert Albert Trias, Jon was too an authentic martial encyclopedia. They both could make theoretical or technical exchanges with any instructor, teacher or master, whether Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Caucasian. Jon Fanning moved with incredible agility, aesthetics and perfection every time he performed a Tao or Kata. He could handle all kinds of weapons, he was hard as a rock and he was the first human being to surprise me with his famous "Iron Palm". I saw him break any object even with his fingertips, two fingers, his thumb or the palm. He was really impressive and worth knowing. any object even with his fingertips, two fingers, his thumb or the palm. He was really impressive and worth knowing. "THERE ARE DREAMS THAT COME TRUE. DREAM AND BELIEVE." The maximum performance in the life of an athlete is a constant that attracts the much sought-after success and recognition. It is known that some people are born with an innate instinct to achieve unattainable goals, whereas others, despite all their great efforts and sacrifices, are left behind. And in the face of this we must be aware of our own qualities and capabilities as well as our limitations. We must learn to listen to our inner self that is very wise and from the depths of our being is constantly indicating, like if it was "pointing us the way", where we should go and what is expected from us. Why are so many differences between them? Anthropometric, genetic, environmental differences… Many factors contribute to the formation of the athlete and the person. The development of the person from childhood will mark a path to the future. Values as dedication, constancy, interest, will, trust, respect, security, character and the desire for competitiveness and improvement, predispose the person like a decisive psychological factor to stand out from bigger or better qualified opponents. At his 26 years of age, my great friend "Dariete" (son of my also great friend Darío Díaz Castro, and his wife Rosa Ventosinos) is of very short stature, his feet and hands are small, nevertheless the remarkable joint flexibility that he displays, along with his impressive swimming skills have led him to being several times Champion of Spain in the various styles, of which he dominates each and every one. My dear daughter Alba, from a very young age, has stood out both in her studies and in her physical abilities. One day, with only 5 years, asked me to take her to horseback riding, and so I told her that if she wanted to go riding, she had to commit herself to study piano. She accepted and that's how she learned piano; but as for horseback riding, despite being so small, she didn't ride little ponies because it was boring to her, she rode real horses! So one day, I was in the riding school watching her while she was running, trotting and realizing jumps on a beautiful light brown horse with white spots and beautiful

The Column of Raúl Gutiérrez manes. Suddenly, a gentleman whom I still didn't know, appeared there and when he saw Alba, threw his hands up in horror screaming: "For God's sake, but what's that little girl doing on that big and nervous horse???" The truth is that I got scared to hear him too. But then he looked at her and said, "Who is this girl, anyway?" And he continued: "She rides really well...!" He was excited. Then I cheered up and said: "She's Alba, my daughter". He looked at me and said he had never seen her before. "I am the owner of the Riding School" -, he added. The fact is that later they wanted her to join the Competition team, they insisted so much that one day she told me: "Daddy, I don't want to be forced to compete, I love riding and I enjoy the horse very much, but I don't want to compete!" Apart from being a very good student, Alba had and has physical gifts and genetics for any sport, and so, she also excelled in tennis, swimming and everything that had to do

with sports. One day, being only 7 or 8 years old, she appeared before me and said: "Look Dad” and she began to perform a Kata that I had never taught her. She had attitude, coordination, fluency, breathing, everything! I was astonished and asked her how she knew that. Her response was, "From watching you training so much." "IF YOU FEEL TIRED TO CARRY OUT SOMETHING, INSIST BECAUSE IT'S YOUR INNER SELF THAT IS CHALLENGING YOU" Where there is a will, there is a way, as long as we are prepared for the moment. The perfect triangle is balanced nutrition, rest and training. Three basic concepts that we must apply in our day to day. The perfect combination makes it possible to get results close to perfection. Otherwise, a poor meal before the competition or

The Column of RaĂşl GutiĂŠrrez insufficient rest the previous night could lead to disastrous consequences or unpleasant surprises. Everything is important, even the smallest detail counts: blood glucose, state of the nervous system, muscle vasodilation, volume of oxygen. There are multiple bodily processes that should be controlled. Some people train during all the year and then compete in the long run. Others prepare themselves very hard in the last few weeks and often get better results. And there are

those who, however much they train, will not success. It is very ungrateful and discouraging, but that's the way things are and it must be accepted. Sports competition is another test of our own abilities, but let's not forget that just as childhood goes and gives way to another stage of our existence; competition has its age and stage. Then we must continue, not to compete, but to remain healthy, flexible, awaken, alive and latent to live our lives in the best possible way. It sounds like a joke,

but at my almost 67 years of age, I try to train every day if possible. Some people ask me for what do I do that. My answer is: "To die healthy". And though it might look like a stupidity, for me it's not, in addition it has a very deep sense. We are all going to die, of course, but it is not the same dying sick, after a long period of suffering and pain, without enjoying the day to day, than reaching the last door conscious and healthy. A good physical, mental and spiritual health is a great value in our existence.

The life of the 21st-century man has changed very much, due to several fundamental reasons. The general globalization of the planet has revolutionized our whole environment: information, fashions, trends, technology, travelling, migration, politics, wars, hatreds... Life has accelerated, and we have the perception that time passes faster submerging us into an oppressive stress. We have no more time to resist and live enjoying our nature and our similar ones. We have no more time to eat as before,

The Column of RaĂşl GutiĂŠrrez slowly and in family, with a nice talking at the table and not the always TV destructive news of accidents, deaths and tragedies. We have no more time to talk and enjoy with friends quietly. And we have no more time for ourselves. All this, step by step, is deteriorating our health. Food is the first and most important point for a healthy life; it is the key to health: we are what we eat. Today, from children to the elderly, we all eat badly, either by the rush, or because of new fashions that reach us from the exterior, or even the advertising, which influences negatively our ancient customs and

our Mediterranean diet. We eat too much, in a disorderly manner and badly. We eat much, because with half of the calories we intake daily we would have more than sufficient, and as a result of this excess the rate of obesity has increased incredibly on our planet. Nowadays children suffer from Morbid Obesity at very young age. Morbid Obesity is severe obesity or obesity Class III; it's the term for obesity characterized by a BMI (body mass index) of 40 or bigger, or a BMI of 35 or bigger in the presence of at least other significant disease or serious disability and handicap because of overweight.

And we eat badly, because we eat a lot of animal protein, lots of fats, lots of carbohydrates and we have to change by eating less of the above and more vegetables and fruits, which are well balanced foods. Exercise is essential for health. Food and exercise are the two basic pillars of a healthy life and both have to go together since they complement each other. Miracle diets, without proper eating habits and exercise don't work; that's why people who undergo special and miraculous diets fail in their attempts; however, many keep resorting to

them again and again, spending time and money without ever achieving their purpose. It is necessary to do exercise 2/3/4 days a week, and at least 40 minutes of aerobics, with an intensity adapted to the physical condition of every person. With exercise we improve our cardiopulmonary condition. In the oxygen demand of the muscles, the heart pumps more blood, supplying oxygen and nutrients not only to the muscles but also to the whole organism, increasing our health, both physical and mental. With the

It has been amply demonstrated that Martial Arts are among the most complete sports that exist and its continuous practice is highly advantageous. Martial Arts train our body in a holistic way, left and right hemisphere, arms, legs and our whole body, because the techniques and movements that are performed imply a global balance. Not so with other sports, because although all of them are

good and useful, some work only certain parts of the human body. In my particular case, Martial Arts have been in my life since I was 15 years old, which means that at my age, I have been practicing something for 52 years that has given me countless satisfactions and has helped me overcome the various stages of crisis, accident or disappointment. Certainly, Martial Arts have given me discipline, patience, will, strength, honor, simplicity, humility, etc. "THE MORE DIFFICULT TO REACH THE VICTORY, THE BIGGER YOUR PRIDE AND SATISFACTION OF ACHIEVING IT"

Ving Tsun

In this month's article, I would like to introduce you to an excellent Ving Tsun teacher from Hong Kong: Sifu Gary Wong Sui Keung A true lover of Ving Tsun of Yip Man who combines teaching with his work as a lawyer in the city of Hong Kong. I also want from these pages to recognize the great help that sifu Gary Wong lends me every time I visit Hong Kong. He has become a good friend of whom I can only say good things. His exquisite education, his respect for all points of view, his thoroughness in teaching his students. They define the profile of this teacher that will give much to speak in the next years.

Ving Tsun I just have words of gratitude to Sifu Gary Wong and his entire school for the excellent personal treatment they gave me in this interview. Wishing to return and continue sharing experiences and the passion for this ART that has managed to unite and create a friendship between practitioners around the world Thank You so much sifu Gary Wong Sifu Salvador Sånchez Interview Who was your master? When did you start practising Ving Tsun? I started to learn Ving Tsun after the film of Ip Man of Donnie Yan. My first Sifu is Sifu Wan Kam Leung, and later I followed Sifu Chan Kim Man, and they both come from Grandmaster Wong Shun Leung’s lineage. After the first two years training from Sifu Chan Kim Man, he recognized my technical level and recommended me as Instructor of Ving Tsun Athletic Association Limited, and I have been his assistant instructor at his school until I left and started my own Ving Tsun school.

There are many schools that focus their practices on self-defence, some others on health or historical aspects of Chinese culture of Kung Fu. At you school, which is your main approach toward s Ving Tsun practices? Self-defence and historical aspects of Chinese culture of Ving Tsun are both important as we learn not only Chinese Kung Fu, but also the heart of the culture, in particularly, the ways we respect each other in martial arts and in life.

Ving Tsun is, nowadays, a well know style worldwide. There are thousands of practitioners in Europe and the United States. The growth has been huge over the last 20 years, mainly because of the movies of grandmaster Ip Man. But many people think that this was not good for Ving Tsun, what do you think? Do you think that Martial Arts Movies, specially Ip Man’s latest movies, are positive or negative? Message from Ip Man is very positive. Many people start to find the values of Ving Tsun kung fu in self-defence and

Ving Tsun culture. However, some postures of the actors in the Ip Man film series may be exaggerated, and the audience may have some misunderstanding of the posture of Ving Tsun. For example, we will not stand still and put the Bong Sau in front of our enemy before fighting contact. At a technical level, do you think that Ving Tsun has evolved, over the last few years, or do you think that there been an involution? With channels like youtube and facebook, Ving Tsun learners better know each other ving tsun lineage’s posture and applications. Some Ving Tsun trainers have introduced the western systematic gym style training and fixed schedule for each stage of Ving Tsun practices, and that is great for standardizing the basic techniques and monitoring the disciples’ progress. Do you think that Ving Tsun should remain the way it’s was learnt from preceding generations, or that on the contrary, it should be adapted to the new times by introducing changes? Why? (Reason out your answer) I understand some Sifus introduce knowledge and practices in joint locking techniques or ground fighting techniques in teaching, and their counter-techniques. For better preparation in self-defence, that’s positive, and it is good to keep changing with new development in fighting. How do you see the future of Ving Tsun in Hong Kong? And in the rest of the world? Do you like the path the system is taking and the huge increase in the number of practitioners? Why? Why not?

Ving Tsun Indeed, quite promising. People demand for high standard Ving Tsun application, but not mere Ving Tsun forms learning. However, if someone claims to teach Ving Tsun, I hope they really did. Meanwhile, if someone say Ving Tsun is not an effective combat skill, I hope they really understand and use Ving Tsun techniques in fighting, or fight with real Ving Tsun fighter. Is teaching Ving Tsun a full time job for you now, or do you have another job and you teach in your spare time? I have my own Ving Tsun school in Western District in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, I have been a lawyer for over 20 years, and a university lecturer and academic advisor for over 16 years. At a technical level… Let’s talk about your view and the way you understand the Ving Tsun style: How important are these forms for you? From your point of view, please talk to us briefly about all of them. Siu Lim Tao is the core of Ving Tsun hand form and theories; Chum Kiu focuses on attack skills and stance movement, and maximizes combat result; Biu Jee teaches you how to rectify the disadvantageous positioning in combat, and minimize the chance and severity of personal injury of your own in fighting; Wooden Dummy practices are combination practices of Chum Kiu and Biu Jee forms, and rectification of hand and stance techniques; Six Points and A Half Pole can reinforce your hands and footworks strength; Bart Cham Dao (Knives) extends the application of hand techniques with different footworks. Simple, direct, swift and dexterous are the focuses. Demonstration: • wooden dummy • long pole form • Siu Lim Tao and • Chum Kiu Form

Interview

Ving Tsun It’s very common, among Ving Tsun practitioners, to teach the same way we learned from our master. But sometimes, some practitioners also use some ideas of their own (such as drills or training systems) developed after years of teaching. Is your teaching method the one you learned from your master, or did you add something new to the teaching method? For me, I would teach my students the Ving Tsun postures, theories and applications at the same time, rather than asking them to do some unknown postures without understanding mechanically for a long period before my explanation. My lessons are interactive. On top of my teaching, students can ask questions, and I would show them the applications instantly. Meanwhile, I would modify some training techniques, like Lap Sau. I modify the Lap Sau as interactive combat so that other Ving Tsun combat postures on top of Pak Da (like Jum Da, Guard Hand thrust forward, Press Da etc.) can also be practiced in Lap Sau. Similar concepts are also used in training Forward Steps and Backward Steps for training partners (students), both hand techniques and footworks shall be included. What would you advice be for a practitioner who’s starting to learn Ving Tsun and is still at the early stages of his study. Whenever you encounter problem in in doing correct Ving Tsun postures or in combat, please relax, elbow down with your forearm moving in parallel manner, staying close to centerline, and droop your shoulder. Be patient in learning! What would be you advice for a practitioner who’s starting to learn the advanced stages of the system? Back to basic, please re-consider your Siu Lim Tau form. Have you learned the correct form and in the correct way? Stop combat for a short period, say two months or so, and during which please concentrate only on basic skill practices, like single sticky hand, double sticky hands and concentrate on elbow positioning. Review all your forms also and see if you really elbow down and close to centerline, using elbow force (not shoulder force) in the forms, and droop your shoulder etc. in practices. I am sure you would find very interesting progress after that short period of “moratorium”. Meanwhile, please get hold of the techniques in tightness and flexibility, and have better use of your “return hand” after each punch! Combat Hapkido

“Getting old does not have to be “a drag”. I am still productive and continue to make a contribution, although in a different way from what it was 20 or 30 years ago”

Grand Masters

YOU ARE AS OLD AS YOU ARE! One of the reasons that I decided to write about this topic is the fact that in a few days I will undergo a surgical procedure and my mind is focused on thoughts of health and ageing. Initially I wanted to title the article “The Ageing Martial Artist, but then I decided to expand the scope of the discussion beyond the subject of the physical limitations that we, as martial artists, experience as we get older. I wanted to explore a broader philosophical perspective of the issue of ageing.

Combat Hapkido o, first the bad news: the old saying “you are as old as you feel”, is just plain absurd, unrealistic, “positive thinking” nonsense. You are as old as you are! You are as old as the age reflected by your date of birth…not a year more, not a year less. And the sooner you accept that and deal with it, the better. Particularly for us martial artists, unrealistic expectations of what our bodies can or should do, will almost always lead to injuries, sometimes even serious ones. Diligent training, consistent exercising, and good diet will (usually) insure a healthier body, a higher level of fitness and maybe even greater longevity. No one can dispute that. It is our responsibility (and it should be one of our top priorities!) to maintain excellent fitness and a healthy lifestyle. But even with all that, we cannot halt the march of time…we will age. As we get older, many biological processes and physiological functions will inevitably change; some will slow down a little, some will greatly deteriorate, others will simply become “different”. Like in a machine, some “parts” will suddenly break down, others will slowly wear out. Medical science can fix or even replace some of those parts, but there is a limit to what can be done to retard the inevitable ageing process. Eternal youth has been a dream of humanity since the beginning of time…we have hundreds of legends, poems, fairy tales and

S

Combat Hapkido science fiction stories involving some versions of the “fountain of youth”. But it is all just fantasy. As much as we would like to ignore it, age is a factor in our performance, our productivity, our effectiveness. A 65 year old may be wiser than a 25 year old, but he will not be able to outrun him. There is a reason why, for thousands of years, we have recruited YOUNG men into the military (and sent them to war). No country requires a 70 year old to serve. And no agency hires a 80 year old police officer. And, let’s face it, in most sports and athletic activities, youth reigns supreme. When I started noticing changes and gradually realized that I was getting older, I did not get depressed or despondent, I simply ignored it and told myself that my body could still do everything it did 10 or 20 years ago. I was wrong! It was a form of denial driven by pride, stubbornness and misguided assumptions. I “wanted” to kick just as high; I “wanted” to punch just as hard; I “wanted” to break-fall just as gracefully; I wanted to run just as fast and just as long but… my body couldn’t and the injuries started. There were badly pulled muscles, bruised bones, dislocations and other assorted annoyances. But even those did not stop me from feeling like a 20 year old trapped in a 50 year old body. It took a few more years, a few surgeries and a lot of self-evaluation to fully acknowledge and finally accept the reality of me getting older. Initially, it was an acceptance that came grudgingly and with some resentment. The famous line of one of Mick Jagger’s great songs resonated with me with a touch of sadness: “what a drag it is getting old..”. But… here is the good news!

Grand Masters As the years passed, I began feeling better about my age and started to develop a new perspective on life. Getting old does not have to be “a drag”. I am still p ro d u c t i v e a n d continue to make a contribution, although in a different way from what it was 20 or 30 years ago. I still travel to teach seminars around the World, but not 45 week ends a year as I did, now I am more selective and do only about 25 trips. The way I teach has a l s o c h a n g e d : less physical intensity but more intellectual stimulation. I offer more wisdom and experience and leave the hard, exhausting “work-outs” to the younger Instructors. And the interesting thing is that I am now very comfortable, very content with who I am and where I am in my life. I will never kick as high or punch as hard as I used to, but that is no longer important or meaningful to me. I have discovered many other things that make me happy and allow me to continue growing my business, my reputation and my

legacy. Writing articles such as this one, mentoring young Instructors, helping my wife’s career, attending international Martial Arts events as a VIP, working on two new books and other projects…are all things that not only give me great purpose and satisfaction but that I can do now at my age and for many more years to come. Yes, about a year ago I started losing my hearing (I am down to only 40% now and I will be seeing a specialist soon about hearing aids). Yes, I also have some problems (fortunately not major ones) with my vision. And yes, next week I will undergo surgery to repair a completely torn Rotator Cuff in my right shoulder. None of those problems are Martial Arts related, they are just part of the process of ageing. And none of those problems will change who I am and what I want to do. Ageing may be challenging but the alternative is definitely undesirable. So I will gladly accept the fact that I am not as old as I feel, I am as old as I am.

A REVOLUTIONARY SYSTEM Systema Morabito is divided into two parts. The first part is aimed at professionals (military, police). The second is dedicated to self-defense. The method of this school is transposed with great simplicity by those approaching to it for the first time. In a relatively short period it is possible to train the pupil to act in various situations, instead of using preordained movements. The athlete learns to fight either with bare hands or with weapons, and to fight with multiple opponents at once, using the psychic aspects of the situation. Several students are part of military structures, demonstrating the use of the method learned in critical combat situations.

“Everything is studied through the knowledge of the physical laws and the biomechanics of the human body.

Self Defense

"not to use force against other force." It is based on the rejection of violent methods to use advantage of force and inertia of the same aggressor.

Systema Morabito is based on three fundamental principles: 1) absence of specific methods: there are a few basic tips that follow the laws of nature 2) we must be able to use the opponent's strength. 3) Knowing how to assess the situation of the moment (which varies continuously in time and space) Everything is studied through the knowledge of the physical laws and the biomechanics of the human body. "The absence of specific methods" follows the basic concept of self-defense combined with combat techniques, to the levers and projections together with the various ways of interacting physical and psychological balance of the aggressor. This real self-defense system is adaptable to all types of people: men, women, boys and all sizes and weights. Now we work on the principle "not to use force against other force." It is based on the rejection of violent methods to use advantage of force and inertia of the same aggressor. So, avoid brute force, to the benefit of a full control of the opponent.

Self Defense

Self Defense

React according to the circumstances: every situation is different so it is also the type of attack (strength, speed, depth). Systema Morabito puts particular emphasis on a realistic approach to self-defense, based on the reality of the clash whose conditions are never to be equal to that which can be simulated and tested in the gym. Technical training is based on the natural movement of the body rather than on the storage of predefined gestures, as occurs for example in kata or in the forms of other martial styles. The practitioner reacts to an attack based on their instincts, rather than run multiple times stored and repeated techniques in a mechanical way, in order to elevate body memory in relation to an hypothetical attack.

Systema Morabito doesn't make distinction between blocks, sockets and strokes, because every single move has several functions that can be chained together. The concept provides that the body of those who fight to move vertically and transversely, shoulders and pelvis rotate on their own axis during punches in an almost contemporary. With the progress of the training, without using any preordained technique, students acquire motor and functional abilities related to the fundamental concepts of the System. The System has as its main purpose to give concrete answers in real combat situations even in highrisk environments. The training techniques are based on natural movements and exploit the strengths and weaknesses of individual; so

“The training techniques are based on natural movements and exploit the strengths and weaknesses of individual.”

“Systema Morabito doesn't make distinction between blocks, sockets and strokes, because every single move has several functions that can be chained together.”

Self Defense there are no fixed guard positions and the practitioner is able to defend himself in any position Systema is not a martial art for exhibition or competition but it is a practical system in which all things are permitted. The System also places great emphasis on the defense against weapons: stick, knife, firearms. The techniques used are rapid, effective and brutal as those used in unarmed combat. The System also includes a psychological training, philosophical and knowledge of the language of the human body and biomechanics. This makes it a complete discipline of self-defense, a set of methodologies designed for the human body in relation to his movements within the space that surrounds it. Systema, method of fighting

without pre-established schemes, designed for the human body and adaptable to any situation in any environment; the practice increases the mind-body coordination until an improbable result: an awareness of their and others' ability in close combat. The fighter should not try to stop the opponent's hand. Key is to accelerate its movement. It's very useful to study the same movement, placing different opponent response solutions. This study will allow the fighter to react in every situation not using a rigid system of rules, but a creative solution, always new www.internationalkravmaga.com info@internationalkravmaga.com

In this DVD, G.M. Larry Tatum (10th Dan) develops techniques of the Kenpo program at the highest level. Particularly, some of his “favorites” like Flashing Mace, Parting Wings, Entwined Lance… Masterfully executed and based on the experience of the movement, G.M. Tatum incorporates his innovative teachings in these techniques that will help you add and complement your training in the Kenpo system. Besides, they provide the individual with the best choice for selfdefense, based on the logical and practical thinking, and place him in the path of understanding the art of Kenpo. These are the self-defense and fighting systems of the modern times we live in. They are designed so that the practitioner gets all the benefits that training these techniques can provide. This DVD has the support of Master Adolfo Luelmo (9th Dan), who goes on with a series of techniques performed in a smooth and strong way, for situations of extreme aggression, in which can be appreciated different states of the movement, in a logical and effective way. As a conclusion, Master Camacho Assisi (8th Dan), displays a technique that combines the strength of the arms and his expertise with legs.

Justo Diéguez: Last weekend we were invited by our teammate Rouben, coordinator and master instructor of Keysi in Germany, to give a course for instructors and an open workshop of Keysi. On this visit to the city of Hamburg I was accompanied by Mr. Alberto Valdivia, Keysi World CEO, and by Master Instructor Bogdan Suciu, and we are proud to say that we conducted one of the best training seminars for instructors from all over Europe, and an excellent three-hour workshop that was attended by over 80 people, women and men of all ages, expert professionals from other disciplines. Justo Diéguez enjoyed being able to share energy and suffering with all my Keysi colleagues in this country. Personally, it was great seeing the way Keysi method is increasingly growing and fortifying in Germany, where every day has more and more followers, who not only look at Keysi as a way of life and personal growth, but thanks to it, they also discover a little more of themselves. This is precisely what makes Keysi a method that differs from all the rest, because it adapts to the personal and mental conditions of every one, responding to the street real situations.

Therefore, Keysi gives us a way of thinking, and under the motto "Never give up" we strengthen our mind which is open to changes, to progress, to be yourself, and it doesn't accept predetermined rules; this provokes in the student the ability to open the mind to his inspiration, his creativity and his originality, and develops an instinct of investigation and total analysis. But teaching has an even deeper meaning; it's not just giving information, it's also necessary to give the method so that the student can understand, analyze, reason and question such information.

“Keysi gives us a way of thinking and under the motto "Never give up" we strengthen our mind which is open to changes.

Justo Diéguez B.I.: Keysi is not a sport J.D.: In Keysi we do not believe in absolute truths. We believe that the world evolves and in systematic education too much time is wasted in techniques that don’t really serve in a risk situation; so quality is quite often sacrificed for the sake of quantity and it causes apathy and waste of great people, who get lost in the world of black belt grades and titles. At Keysi, the aim of teaching is that of turning our instructors and students into independent and competent thinkers who can mark the difference between sport and street, so that it serves them in the real world and, in a situation of real risk, they can have an opportunity for surviving.

“In Keysi we do not believe in absolute truths. We believe that the world evolves and in systematic education too much time is wasted in techniques that don’t really serve in a risk situation.”

B.I.: A reflection. J.D.: Perhaps the best questions are those that have been repeatedly asked from the times of the Greek philosophers: who, when, how, why, where, etc., questions that never lose their identity. I believe that those of us who dedicate ourselves to teaching, we all have a mission to fulfill. It's a mission that nobody has entrusted to us, but that I personally have imposed myself, and I would like that you, as professionals, would also impose yourselves; "awake" in your students the pain of lucidity, with no limits, with no pity; only this way they will find the way to reach their goals.

“Perhaps the best questions are those that have been repeatedly asked from the times of the Greek philosophers: who, when, how, why, where, etc. “

History of Jiu Jitsu

Interview In 2002, Marcelo Alonso interviewed for our magazine one of the key men in the history of Jiu Jitsu and the Gracie revolution. An essential file so that the new generations have memories of the past and its legacy, today converted into a sport of masses in the form of MMA. Text & Photos: Marcelo Alonso & Gracie archive

Pioneer of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu When we talk about the beginnings of Vale Tudo, the first name that comes to mind is that of Gracie. It is a more than fair association because at the end of the day there was firstly Hélio, then Carlson and later Rickson and Royce who have all spent the last seven decades demonstrating the superiority of Jiu Jitsu in the ring in live combat. There is one thing that a lot of people don’t remember and that is during those years the family was also helped by illustrious students who never thought twice about spilling their own blood to defend the name of the masters. In this respect no one has done more than João Alberto Barreto. For 12 years he lived with Hélio Gracie, and he submitted dozens of fighters in Vale Tudo and was considered by the Gracie Brothers themselves as one of the more valiant and technical fighters of all time. Budo International: Is it true that your wife’s father was the one who introduced Count Koma to Carlos Gracie? João Alberto Barreto: Yes, that’s right. My father-in-law, Dr. Samuel Pinto, was Para’s doctor in Belem and a good friend of Carlos Gracie. Back then Gastao (Carlos’ father) already had a large family, plenty of kids. He was a businessman but didn’t have much money and lived frugally. Carlos was very young and wasn’t working yet. My

Entrevista father-in-law, a man with considerable economic means, registered him in the Mitsuo Maeda Koma academy. According to Dr. Samuel, C. Koma was impressed by Carlos because he was a brave and intelligent young man and a very good fighter. Carlos was very close to Count Koma, who was one of the great fighters at that time. When Koma arrived to Belem, he challenged any fighter who wished to confront him. Budo International: Does that mean that Count Koma practiced some kind of ValeTudo at the time? João Alberto Barreto: My father-in-law told me that a "Capoerist" called “Pé de Bola”, who was well-known in Belem, accepted the Japanese’s challenge. The result was something incredible. Never before had there been such an interesting and atypical combat. When the Japanese saluted he did not put out his hand, he bowed with a gesture of respect for the opponent. After this greeting, “Pé de Bola”, unaware of this custom, put his hand forward. In my opinion the Japanese thought that it was the beginning of the fight. When he caught Pé de Bola’s hand, he squeezed it so strongly that he forced the "Capoerist" to kneel down and ask him to stop, with only the pressure on his hand. Everyone was disappointed. That might have been the first case of Vale-Tudo, here in Brazil. Budo International: What was Count Koma doing there? João Alberto Barreto: There are several versions. One of them is that Koma was a Japanese admiral sent to the Amazons on a mission. It was supposed to be an area that the Japanese were very much interested in and were thinking of invading once the war was won. But, this version can’t be confirmed as there is no evidence. The truth is that he had to found his academy in order to survive. Budo International: So then, you met the Gracies thru your wife? João Alberto Barreto: I was already a fighter when I met my wife. We were classmates in the University and I met her through Carlos Gracie’s daughter, Rose. Budo International: How did you meet the Gracies? João Alberto Barreto: Hélio was challenged by a Bahian called Caribé and at the time there was no gym here in Rio prepared for fights. They then went to talk with my father, who was the director of the Deaf and Dumb Institute in Laranjeiras (a suburb of Rio). My father had built a big gym there and agreed to let them fight in it. That was my first experience with Jiu-Jitsu. I had no idea what it was. Hélio beat Caribé easily and told him that if he wanted a return fight he, Hélio, would fight with his arms tied. After the fight, they all went to my house. I was 15 years old then and was a pupil at the Military School. My father was very proud

of my being very strong and an athlete. He asked me to take my shirt off so that Carlos and Hélio could admire my physique. Carlos asked me if I wanted to learn Jiu-Jitsu and I agreed. I went there two days later and Carlos had me train with Trota, who had been practicing Jiu-Jitsu for three months. Obviously, I lost, since I knew nothing about it. That day Carlos didn’t say anything, but he phoned me the following day and told me that I had a knack for Jiu-Jitsu. I began going to class every day and learned very fast, mainly in the technical aspect. After a month I beat Trota. Realizing this, Carlos took me with Trota to the “Diario da Noite”, to present me as the future champion who in the space of three months would be ready to challenge any amateur in Rio. Budo International: After only three months of JiuJitsu?

History of Jiu Jitsu João Alberto Barreto: That’s right. Three months later I returned and proffered the challenge but nobody accepted. I was training daily so Carlos Gracie decided to take me over to train with Hélio’s pupils. Little by little I began beating them all. I demonstrated that I had talent and was also very strong and dedicated, thanks to the discipline acquired at the Military school. Hélio liked all this and took me away from Carlos. But before that, something interesting happened. Every Sunday Hélio had competitions in his house in Teresópolis. That’s where I met the Teresópolis champion, whom they called “the Japanese” (he wasn’t really Japanese but he did have oriental features). Hélio bet Carlos that I would be unable to stand up to his Japanese. Carlos accepted the bet and said that I could beat the Japanese anytime. On Monday, Hélio took the Japanese to the Gracie Academy, located in Flamengo (a suburb of Rio). We gave a hard-fought combat and nobody won. In view of this, Carlos Gracie made a second challenge, but this time in Teresópolis, 15 days later. I did well in that second combat and submitted the Japanese twice, once with an arm lock and the other by strangulation. By then I had been practicing Jiu-Jitsu for about four months. Afterwards, Hélio asked me to be his assistant and I went to his home everyday to help him with his classes. I usually arrived at 7:00 A.M., had lunch at 11:30 and left for the Military School afterwards.

Budo International: Did you live in Hélio Gracie’s home? João Alberto Barreto: I lived there from the time I was 16 until I was 28 years old. First in the Academy, later on I lived for some time in “Praia do Flamengo” and finally on Bolivar St. Hélio and Margarida (his first wife) were kind of my second parents. At the time, my parents lived in Sao Paulo and, because of this, Hélio invited me to live in his house. I shared Rolls’ bedroom – he was 6 or 7 years old then. I’ve seen him grow up, seen him thrive. Hélio appreciated me very much and I was very disciplined, followed his instructions to the letter. He’s always very involved with his pupils. I think he’s a genius, there’s no one like him. Everything I learned, I learned from him. I assimilated everything he taught me, he’s been my sport example. I owe him my character, my technique and my psychological training. Budo International: How was your debut in the rings? João Alberto Barreto: My debut in the Vale Tudo rings was in 1958. There had been some floods in Orós, in Ceará, and the Gracies organized five Vale Tudo combats in order to help these people by sending them all the money earned. They installed the ring behind the Maracana’s goal and the five fighters of the Gracie Academy, including myself, won easily. I submitted my opponent with a strangulation, Carlson beat Passarito and Vígio (Hélio) and Armando (Wriedt) also submitted their opponents.

Interview Budo International: After that event, did you start fighting more frequently? João Alberto Barreto: Before this combat, I had already fought in public (also in the Maracana) in Jiu-Jitsu combats. I took part in the preliminary fight before the Hélio vs. Kato combat, and later before the Hélio vs. Kimura encounter. The first one against the Japanese Asayma ended in a tie. In the second fight, I beat Sérgio Carneiro, who was an excellent pupil of Aroldo Brito. I did Vale Tudo in Niterói, where I also submitted my opponent with a strangulation and, later on, strangled the Bahian in the Maracanazinho, in the opening combat of the encounter between Carlson and Valdemar Santana. It was around then that Hélio presented himself as candidate to become Federal Representative. Whenever he went somewhere to make a speech, he took me with him to perform an exhibition. We did about 80 exhibitions in public areas, challenging whomever wanted to fight. Once when we were in a crowded place, someone said to me “with a stick in my hands, nobody is capable of getting me out of here”. Hélio let me confront the guy and I dominated and submitted him twice. Budo International: Is it true that you fought every day on the TV program “Heroes of the Ring”?

João Alberto Barreto: That was in 1959, in the Continental TV, the year I began Law School. Every day after leaving the University, I went directly to fight. At that time, I was already married and my wife was expecting our first child. The program “Heroes of the Ring” was launched and the Gracies called me and said: “Look, João Alberto, we are going to promote you. You are going take part in a combat, the program’s main event”. So, I began fighting. I confronted Luis Vinagre, Pedro Montanha, Virgulino, Peruano. It was a ring made of rope installed in the gym of the Flamengo Club and the combats were transmitted live. It was Vale Tudo, just as nowadays, with three 5-minute rounds. I won all the fights; didn’t have a single draw. Budo International: They say that the program was discontinued because you caused an open fracture. Is this true? João Alberto Barreto: I fought with a Flamengo champion, José Geraldo, and applied a Kimura lock. He resisted; I informed the referee. Geraldo didn’t want to hit the canvas. When he tried to escape, I forced the lock and his humerus broke. It was transmitted live and the greatest reaction came from the press. The society in those days was very conservative and saw it as extreme violence. A newspaperman called Evandro Carlos de Andrade, who worked for the

Globo, wrote an article saying: “… I’m against this type of violence, but once in a while I betray myself, because I enjoy seeing João Alberto’s combats. Budo International: Did you see the fight between Hélio Gracie and Valdemar Santana? João Alberto Barreto: Hélio lost against Valdemar because he was sick. He had the flu. He was coughing and had ear

problems. But, circumstances forced him to fight, when he shouldn’t have. Valdemar Santana went up and came down the ring 18 times, all because of his respect for Hélio Gracie. He was advised by a psychiatrist named Valdemar Dutra, who was the brother of a good friend of the Gracie family, Elói Dutra. Dutra had been State Vice-Governor and Federal Representative. Valdemar Dutra didn’t like the family, I don’t know why. V. Santana was confronting his great Master.

Interview Morally as well as psychologically he didn’t think he was in shape to fight against Hélio, who was his teacher. But advised by his psychiatrist, he decided to fight. In spite of Valdemar’s being very strong and Hélio’s knowing his way of fighting (since we had taught him) Hélio resisted for 3 hours and 45 minutes and, at the end, had no strength left. Then Valdemar picked him up and for a moment stopped to think where to throw him. Finally, he threw him to the floor and kicked Hélio in the face. In my opinion, he didn’t do it wickedly; he did it because he was afraid. Carlos then told Valdemar to choose among Carlson, Hélio and João Alberto. This reached the front page of the news. Logically, Valdemar chose Carlson. Budo International: Did you train with Valdemar Santana? João Alberto Barreto: I was teaching him. He used to be with me always. We trained in the academy with Valdemar. I always beat him. I used to fool him. He never knew what I was going to do next. I pretended to go for his neck and caught his foot, for his foot and went for his arm. But with Carlson it was different. It was more difficult to beat him because he always, obstinately, wanted to win. I insisted but he resisted. Budo International: Is it true that there was a great rivalry between Carlson and you? João Alberto Barreto: In Jiu-Jitsu our form was similar but in Vale Tudo Carlson was really insuperable because, even though he didn’t have a great body, he was very strong. He weighed about 76 kg., a bit more than I. The truth is that Hélio and Carlos were always encouraging antagonism, rivalry, so, we were always competing. That was a “Samurai” school. Carlson, Jorge Francés, Robson, Algenio, Severiano and I all slept in the Gracie Academy. We were very good friends, brothers, but in the ring it was another thing. Budo International: How did the Gracies take your decision to set up your own school? João Alberto Barreto: That was in 1963. Hélio didn’t want me to leave but I thought it was time to. He was cordial with me and understood my way of thinking. At that time I was considered the best teacher in the academy. Hélio was completely satisfied with my work. Besides, his pupils, apart from classes with him, only had classes with me. Budo International: Were colored belts already in use at that time? João Alberto Barreto: No, at the time we used dark blue belts. The red belt, only given to the great Masters, was an honor bestowed by the Federation. There was no graduation then. Those changes came about because, in my daily column in the “Sports Journal” entitled “Counter attack”, I always encouraged an attitude of mutual respect among the Martial Arts. I wrote about conciliation between the Martial Arts, each to be respectful of the others’ individuality. Budo International: Do you think that Jiu-Jitsu is still the best “pure” Martial Art? João Alberto Barreto: In my opinion, it is the most efficient fighting system because it unites them all. Its practice is traumatized by having been transformed into various styles, like Karate, Tae Kwon Do, etc. But it is a setup of equilibrium, as is Judo: it is also a system of floor fighting. Its logic and intelligence are fantastic because all combats end up on the floor. Unfortunately, nowadays our Jiu-Jitsu is impaired. Technique has been developed a great deal, though not in the submission aspect. It has become a type of grappling, or Olympic wrestling. Now and

“It was a school of Samurais. Carlson, Jorge Francés, Robson, Algenio, Severiano and I slept in the Gracie Academy. We were close friends and brothers. Inside the ring it was something else!”

History of Jiu Jitsu then we see a foot-lock, an arm-lock or a knee-lock… But, for example, the practice of strangulation with Kimono has been forgotten. I don’t see anyone win by strangulation. It isn’t seen either in the mounted position or that below. The foot-locks have also been discounted in modern Jiu-Jitsu. They are considered a thing of the lower suburbs. I can show you techniques of foot-locks in any position. I will show you a foot-lock in any position you wish. Budo International: Whom do you consider the grea-

test fighter of all times? And the Greatest of the present day? João Alberto Barreto: We have many great fighters at present. But the real revelation now is Vanderlei Silva. I see him as the model of the Vale Tudo fighter. He enters the ring like a Mike Tyson. He goes in to win. He seems to combine a philosophy of attack – daring, based on traumatism, on Muay Thay, But he has the technical knowledge of wrestling. In addition, he is a purple belt in Jiu-jitsu. With respect to the best of all times, I should like to name

Interview various. These are Carlson Gracie, who was a “monster”, Hélio Vigio was excellent. Then Robson Gracie was unbeatable in his weight class while Rickson and Royce, obviously, amazed the whole world. Budo International: Many fans think that you and Cesar Maia – Mayor of Rio at the time – were guilty of not participating in the 1995 International Vale Tudo. Rickson was going to fight in Rio. What really happened? João Alberto Barreto: When Scorzelli wanted to bring Rickson to Brazil for the International, he phoned me to ask if I would be judge in Rickson’s fight. This was to be against the winner of the International Tournament. I suggested a National Tournament be held to choose a Brazilian representative too for the International Tournament. Then the winner would face Rickson. Scorzelli liked the idea and asked that I organize the deal. After the National go-around, Scorzelli said he would pay me after the International. He said the mayor was going to sponsor the International event, paying both the fighters and me. Later, I found this was not the truth. Cesar Maia had not promised Scorzelli any money at all. Finally, we suffered

for the shameful affair in which we had been ensnarled. Even then I tried to solve some problems which were not of my concern. It was impossible because I didn’t have power to do so. I was a technician, responsible for matching combatants for the fights. Like everyone else, I found myself involved – we were all deceived. Despite the messy situation I continued, disbursing from my own pocket many unpaid fighters. I also paid Santa Roca himself. He had arranged for the ring. It was not for me to pay but for Mr. Scorzelli. He defaulted on reimbursing me even the basic amount ($40,000) agreed upon. Until the present time, I have not received a cent! Budo International: How come after all this mix up you did the UVF in the Metropolitan? João Alberto Barreto: Well, after what happened, I thought I had, to recuperate the combat for Rio and for Brazil by any means. It was then that a Japanese gentleman named Miura came to see me. He wanted to associate with me to organize fights in Brazil and Japan. We signed a contract and organized three international tournaments in the Metropolitan and another in Japan. It was then that I took Carlao, Walid, The Pedro, Hugo, Johil, Ebenezer and a few others, to fight for the first time in Japan. Budo International: How did you become the “righthand-man” of the Shooto in Brazil? João Alberto Barreto: A friend named Flavio Behring who had been my student in the Gracie Academy contacted a

History of Jiu Jitsu Japanese newspaperman called Mawato Takashima. Takashima came to Brazil and asked me about the history of Jiu-Jitsu there. He called at my house with his wife and wrote an article about me. Though my first contact with Japan had been through Miura, it was Takashima who strengthened my links with the Shooto. Thereafter, I initiated

a phase of development of Vale Tudo International. I started to take Brazilians to Japan. Budo International: Just who did you take there as representatives of Brazilian Shooto? JoĂŁo Alberto Barreto: Many Brazilians. This is why you

Interview have Alexandre Pequeno, a great champion trained in Japan. He fights for $1,000. Intelligently, Pequeno understands exactly what he has to do to get what he came for. Today he is one of the most sought-after fighters. For more than two years he has won the champion’s belt. We must take our hat off to him. Brazil should honor him because he represents the champion of the smallsized fighters. Morphologically, the Brazilian is very similar to the Japanese. They are not very tall men the same as the Japanese. Small idols are needed rather than the mastodons from other countries who fight around. Combats between these tiny men are technically fantastic, much more dynamic. Budo International: I understand you no longer give Jiu-Jitsu classes… João Alberto Barreto: That’s right. I stopped teaching in 1980, but my brother, Alvaro Barreto, has a school in Copacabana. Nowadays, I dedicate myself to other activities. I have a law degree, am a professor of sport psychology and coordinator and professor at the University Veiga of Almeida. In addition, I graduated in Applied Psychology, am a professor of post-graduate studies in the Military Center of Physical Training in the UFRJ, in the physical education school as well as in the PUC. Furthermore, I am about to publish a book entitled “Psychological preparation of high performance athletes”. Lastly, I am President of the SOPERI (Society of Sport Psychology of Rio de Janeiro). Budo International: Is it true that you went to the United States before Rorion did? João Alberto Barreto: Yes, I went in 1963, being the first Brazilian to show Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to the

Americans. There is no doubt that Brazilian JiuJitsu is Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. I fought in the Washington YMCA, in West Point Military Academy, in the FBI, in the Naval Academy at Annapolis and in the New York Athletic club. There I beat two challenges: Jiu-Jitsu vs. Judo (N.Y. Police) and Jiu-Jitsu vs. Karate (against the French Champion). When Rorion went to the USA, Hélio Gracie himself (my great Master) asked me for a letter of recommendation. I wrote one in English and Rorion took it with him. Years later he returned the favor by inviting Hélio Viglio and me to be referees in the first Edition of Ultimate Fighting. Budo International. How would you divide the history of Vale Tudo in Brazil? João Alberto Barreto: In three phases: the first from 1930 to 1943 with Hélio Gracie. It was then that the reactivation of interest in the new style of fighting began. Thereby, it was confirmed that JiuJitsu was the most efficient type of fight and could face-up to any sort of combat. Thanks to this, those faked fights of time began to fade in popularity. Thus for the first time in Brazil the authentic “Lucha” was seen. Hélio and Carlos always assured the fairness of the combats. Later, from 1956-1960, came the second phase. This began with the Vale Tudo of Oro’s in which I was presented by the Gracies. Carlson, Robson and Vigio also shone in this period. The last phase began in 1980 with those personal challenges (J-J vs. Muai Thay and J-J vs. Wrestling) which ended up reintroducing Vale Tudo in Brazil. What came later all the world knows: Rorion Gracie took Vale Tudo to the world, doing the Ultimate fighting, which confirmed the excellence of his brother Royce throughout the world.

In this new DVD of Vovinam, Patrick Levet has wanted to show the facets of the use and handling of the Vietnamese Stick. Although little known, the Vietnamese long stick is, without a doubt, the most important weapon among all the weapons of the traditional Martial Arts of Vietnam. The Vovinam school, in its official program, only proposes the Stick Form (Tu Tuong Con Phap) and the counterattacks of stick vs. stick (Phan The Con), without explaining the intermediate movements. But the Vietnamese stick goes far beyond these two facets and Master Levet offers us 2 detailed DVDs on all the applications of the numerous intermediate movements of the Stick Quyen. This first volume includes a series of specific stick warming up and bodybuilding exercises, the guard, fundamental principles, stylistic handling of the weapon, defense against disarmament, blocking and dodging, displacements, as well as combat techniques. An original work that shows for the first time the Vietnamese stick in a complete and exhaustive way.

Knife Techniques While in many other Martial Arts the first defensive action to take is to separate yourself from your aggressor, in Aikido you have to learn to get up close to him because what you are looking for is union with your opponent. There is no doubt you have to have gr eat courage and polished technique to get up close to an opponent especially if he is carrying a weapon. W ith his training in the Marines, Master Furuya recognizes better than anyone how important these factors are in the presence of a weapon as dangerous as the knife. Perhaps this is the reason that he has wanted to share with you the Aikido vision of knife work in a fantastic monographic video on the subject. We don’t have to mention that all the techniques done w i t h t h e “ Ta n t o a r e a l s o appropriate for the knife and vice versa, the only thing that distinguishes them in practice is the degree of danger during training.

Master Furuya approaches the knife techniques resolutely, “We don’t play with knives!” he repeats during one of the breaks in taping the video. The search for effective angles and solutions with which to react to a knife aggression wakes up practitioners from their “repetitive dream” on the tatami. In order to do this, practice with the “Tanto” is an essential facet for the Aikido practitioner. Master Furuya surprised us with his enormous variety of techniques for meeting an aggression, and with the camera we were able to see over and over again defensive variations in the face of the same attack. Fluidity is essential when attacked with a knife. Whether used to cut or puncture, the knife is a slippery foe, a danger to be confronted with determination and exactitude. Master Furuya uncovers the many tactics and responses that Aikido offers us, leaving it very clear to us why the knife is the weapon that makes the difference in Aikido. Sensei Furuya is student and nephew of Kensho Furuya and he trains with him and teaches in his famous Dojo in Los Angeles California. Nevertheless, his quality as an instructor goes beyond his name and there is no doubt that he will delight even the most battlehardened lovers of the Art of Ueshiba.

Aikido

Aikido and the Tanto (wooden knife) Aikido Weapons In Aikido as in many other Martial Arts, weapons are used within its training program. The best known of these are: the Jo (wooden stick 1.30 cm. in length and 20-25 in diameter) and the Bokken (wooden sword). Apart from these two, Aikido also teaches techniques with the Tanto which is a wooden knife. The techniques have no single origin and according to the experts, the origins of Aikido reside in different combat systems and methods, for example: Sekiguchi Ryu, Takenouchi Ryu, Tenshin Shinyo Ryu (the antecedent of Judo), Shinkage Ryu, Yagyu Ryu (the Sable school, Alabarda, Kendo), Hozo Ryu (Lance), etc. For many years Master Ueshiba practiced the different schools of sable, stick, lance etc‌ finally becoming an expert in all of them. Thanks to him we have the skillful movements of Aiki-ken and Aiki-jo that we know and enjoy today. The techniques with the Tanto have been introduced in Aikido by way of their association with the abovementioned schools. Aikido by definition is a martial art and as such is conscious of all possible attacks whether they are done with or without weapons. Work with weapons is the focus of Tanto-Dori and a student can only begin this work when he has full dominium over the fundamentals of Aikido. This usually happens when the practitioner is a Black Belt or 1 Kiu. Within the structure of working with weapons in Aikido, working with the Tanto plays an important role in the complete development of the practitioner. The weapons bring a new perspective to the art and as such they present us with important variations in concepts like distance (Ma-Ai), speed of the technique, control over the adversary, and of course our own ability to react that acquires a much broader and more authentic sense when we actually apply the principles of the Art.

Aikido “In Aikido as in many other Martial Arts, weapons are used within its training program.

In the presence of a weapon like the knife we have to apply the techniques with more speed and precision because weapons never permit delays. In this way our technique evolves much more quickly and it has to be fluid and perfect so that the control and the disarming of the adversary is done in the most controlled and quickest way possible. For this reason, it is a fundamental requisite for the practice of these techniques that we have a solid base in the fundamental concepts such as Tenkan, Irimi, and TaiSabaki as well as movements or controls like Ikkyo, KoteGaeshi, and Shio-Nage, etc., since lack of control over or fluidity of the basics can be fatal in the performance of these techniques.

Facing up to Fear If there is one thing that truly influences work with weapons it is above all emotional feelings, as much in the emotions that we transmit as in those that are transmitted to us when we are attacked with a weapon. This is the real work with Tanto! Our attitude towards the weapons themselves,

and our attitude towards how we mentally deal with being faced with them will determine the success or failure of our technical application. When we control our action and our reaction to the attacks, it is essential to develop attitudes like the Sen no Sen, (sense of anticipation), or De-Ai (that refers to the act of going back, moving and anticipating the attack). These attitudes are based on sensations, that just like with the techniques, need to be practiced thousands of times so that in this way they find their place and their natural path in our interior. We will not be able to move ahead in our evolution as Aikido practitioners and attain dominium over the situation without this mental training and this alert disposition that training with weapons can give us. As we develop the technical part, we will also develop the physical and technical side of the Art and at the same time be more careful, more precise, more agile and coordinated in our movements. On the other hand we also have to develop the mental aspect of the Art by controlling our emotional feelings. Among all these emotions, fear is without a doubt the one that most efficiently blocks the neuro-mus-

cular system, and at the same time the senses heighten and a lot of information becomes distorted. The presence of danger puts us in a much more receptive mode with respect to the body language of our opponent. It is this inner tension that can help us capture all the nuances of our opponent, his intentions and his movements. The most complicated part is controlling our own movements. Our capacity to stay attentive and relaxed at the moment of executing the technique correctly is not something that can be learned in a day, but if you train seriously and in a disciplined manner you will end up prepared to deal with moments of high emotional stress.

Aikido

Training with all your senses In our Dojos weapons’ practice is usually extended and relaxed because we know who our opponent is. Furthermore the objective of the attack is never to injure our adversary and at the end of the day if we make a mistake, well, it really doesn’t matter! For this reason our practice sessions often lose a little authenticity, this sense of the real, and they become just another task, thus losing sight of the purpose of our training. This does not mean that our practice has to be violent or aggressive! Not at all! But it should be honest and serious, and executed with the correct attitude. Each attack should be done with intention and strength, and in this way

Aikido

Tori, the defender will be able to experience all the difficulties that present themselves when he performs the different techniques (technical or psychological difficulties) against the Tanto. If we do this in any other way we will not achieve the final goal of our preparation and we will simple be lying to ourselves if we believe that what we are doing is correct and decisive. When we reach determined levels in our practice of Aikido, we have to try to shift the focus of our daily practice toward the realities of everyday life. It is recommended that we begin practicing the Tanto techniques with simulated weapons made of wood until we get to a level of experience and control that gives us enough security to then be able to work with real weapons. A real sense of danger will mean that we have reached a new learning stage. Furthermore, it is logical when working with both the wooden tanto and the real knife to take all possible precautions to avoid accidents.

Aikido Control begins with breathing! Following the Aikido principles of non-violence and defense, the defender, Tori, will work with empty hands (that is to say without weapons) during practice and so he should remain in Kamae, extended and available. His mental attitude should have a spiritual alertness where unity with his aggressor comes even before the attack itself takes place. In this way we capture his attention and his movements even before he acts. During this phase it is fundamental to control your breathing (as it is in all work in Aikido), just as it is important to control your distance from the aggressor (Ma-Ai). With our breathing we control our cardiac rhythm and we can achieve the relaxed and concentrated state that is essential if we want to execute the techniques correctly. With the appropriate distance we will have a global vision of our attacker that will allow us to observe and perceive any movement he makes. Our vision should not focus on his weapon or on his face nor on any other concrete place on his anatomy, rather it should focus on his entire body. In order to do this we maintain our gaze at chest height thus we maintain a global view of Uke and constantly try to capture any type of movement. The defense has to be quick and efficient with the objective of rapidly neutralizing the weapons and the aggressor’s control so that he doesn’t have the option of a second opportunity to attack. The choice of which technique to execute will be a function of various factors taught to us by experience and practice. Some of these could be: the type of attacker and how he takes up his weapon. The incorrect distance, a slow reaction, and lack of concentration etc., are all errors that could prove fatal when working with weapons. “At certain levels of Aikido work we have to try to bring our daily practice a little closer to everyday reality”.

Present, past and future of the Art of Ueshiba In the last few years Aikido has developed enormously as a Martial Art. The death of its charismatic founder Morihei Ueshiba, the most modern of the classical Japanese, left behind a whole generation of followers who have had to follow his path without the direct guidance of their O Sensei. As the years have gone by a new generation of students eagerly trains under the tutelage of those

“In the presence of a weapon like the knife we have to apply the techniques with more speed and precision because weapons never permit delays.

Aikido

“Our vision should not focus on his weapon or on his face nor on any other concrete place on his anatomy, rather it should focus on his entire body.”

who continue to maintain this atypical martial style. Amongst them a select group of Masters shine in the international panorama: people like Yamada, Chiba, Furuya, Kitaura, and many others have been forming young people who are the future of this beautiful and philosophical Art. The essence of Aikido resides in a vision far removed from the duality of the meeting between two forces. Ai is the “unification” Ki of the vital energy. Breathing is the first and most elemental form of synchronization of two forces. Through them we move the rhythm of the pulses, the currents of strength and the movements. Just as it would never occur to a karate practitioner to breathe in while executing a strike, so it would never occur to an Aikido practitioner not to match his movements and his breathing with his opponent’s action. The grand Masters of Aikido, like Itsuo Tsuda of the “school of breathing” have excelled in their activities promoting a superior state of consciousness that is the result of their work. But they are not all virtuous. One of their most frequent deficiencies is that of not sufficiently teaching the forms of attack, with the result that especially in the first grades, students attack clumsily which impedes them from developing strong and clear defensive formulas. Only a few great Masters like Yamada get around this problem by creatively pushing their students towards a progressively more committed kind of learning.

“When we reach determined levels in our practice of Aikido, we have to try to shift the focus of our daily practice toward the realities of everyday life.”

In this first DVD of "Wind Warriors XXI", Master Rui Ribeiro presents a work that anyone can do, in traditional martial arts and combat sports, to improve your health, your techniques and your way of working both in training and in combat. The Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak is a system based on both weapons and empty hands at the same time. It incorporates many of the new-generation weapons, swords, knives, circular kerambits, bars, batons of different lengths and other more particular weapons. Even in our empty hand training methods we face an opponent who attacks us with weapons in both hands, as well as several opponents at once. This type of training makes us more aware of everything that happens during an altercation and what do and not do when facing one or more armed aggressors. In this second DVD, Maha Guru Horacio Rodrigues, heir to the lineage of Pendekar Pak Victor De Thouars, of Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak, addresses its particular way to train and use the different weapons, laying the foundations for more advanced future plans of study and the application of technique. This video includes the principles of work, angulation, Sambuts, Jurus and drills with the short sword "Pedang", short knife "Pissau", short stick "Tonkat Matjan", Sarong, and applications of selfdefense with empty hands.

REF.: • DVD/TOYAMA-2

This DVD is the result promoted by the Spanish subsidiary of the Zen Nihon Toyama-Ryu Iaido Renmei (ZNTIR - Spain Branch), to publicize the technical content of the ToyamaRyu style as practiced in the ZNTIR Honbu Dojo in Machida, Tokyo, unchanged, with no alterations. The loyalty of the program is such that is its president and maximum technical manager, Yoshitoki Hataya Sensei, who, accompanied by some members, executes personally the entire compendium of the current style program. In him you can find the basic structure of the methodology that is applied, from the coded exercises of warming up and preparation and through the cutting exercises; the guards; the school Katas, including those corresponding to the Toyama Army Academy, the Gunto Soho and its explanation; work in pairs, both in Kumitachi and Gekken Kumitachi, and the cornerstone on which the Toyama-Ryu is based, i.e., Tameshigiri or cutting exercises on a real target. Zen Nihon Toyama-Ryu IaiDo Renmei (ZNTIR) is the body that currently - once reviewed and adapted the concepts and methodology of a school that comes from a method of actual combat intends to maintain alive this tradition and the original forms through a system that unifies body, mind and spirit in a realistic and effective way. Thanks to the commitment of a few graduates of the Toyama Army Academy (Rikugun Toyama Gakko), who continued secretly keeping alive the art until the lifting of the bans and the return of sovereignty to the Japanese people, today can learn a fencing style framed among the current schools of Iai-Do. This is a meticulous DVD in different languages, which proves to be a valuable source for researchers and practitioners of Japanese sword, and for martial artists in general or interested in the history of Japan and its last world war. It's a real stroke of luck being able to observe the techniques it contains, and at least for serious researchers, is well worth having it in your video library. We practitioners of the style want to share loyally the knowledge of our Japanese fencing school, in the hope that at the same time, the own inter nal values of those armed men impregnate the new generations and allow to glimpse a revulsive, in a traditionally way very different from the current approach to combat disciplines of Japanese origin. What happens when two people practice Chi-Sao, what is the meaning of their practice and what the objectives? In this 3rd DVD, "Chi Sao from the base to an advanced level," Sifu Salvador SĂĄnchez addresses perhaps the most important aspect of Wing Chun: ChiSao, the soul of the system itself, which provides the practitioner with some special characteristics which are completely different from others, and gives him great virtues. This role deals with some aspects quite basic in principle, but as you delve into them, they'll be surprising to you. It is a very clear feature traditional Chinese culture; what it's very obvious at first glance, it nevertheless contains a second or third reading, which will surely change your approach, practice and understanding. We will discuss how to practice Chi Sao through our working drills and how to apply those drills, that ability in a sparring, linking certain concepts, perhaps not so much tied to traditional Kung Fu, such as biomechanics, structures, knowledge of physics, etc., in order to obtain better results in our practice.
