Commando Krav Maga has proven popular with many other martial arts instructors around the world, from various schools, who wish to enhance their own abilities and provide a reality based fighting system to their existing students that is both accessible and dependable. “Simplicity is genius is Moni's catchphrase but this trademark humility belies the work and thought which has to be done to distill anything to its core essence. Now suitably refined, this is a system which is suitable for, and accessible to, both teachers and their students. Military and civilian sectors. The experienced and the novice. This is because, quite simply, it works. It is based on fundamental principles and practices which, if adhered to, and with a little luck, will keep you safer on the street. So maybe it's time to take what ever you know onto another level. In this new DVD, Moni Aizik teaches us in all detail how to solve various situations that can usually occur in the street: kinfe attacks, punches, threats from the back with a knife or a gun and holding our hand, various examples on the ground as knife attacks or situations in which the aggressor applies us an Armbar or a Triangle, and how to solve weapon threatening situations against third parties.

"'What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well." Antoine de Saint-ExupĂŠry If there is de facto an exciting border for the human being, it's undoubtedly the world of the invisible. Being an impregnable point, resistant to any simplification, we humans have tried by all means possible to open the door that hides its mysteries. We live a particularly interesting moment in this sudoku of the consciousness of being. Humans have developed extraordinary formulations and methodologies such as science, which have revealed an enormous richness and a different angle of perceiving what is hidden, and can eliminate many aspects of the secular mist of ignorance in which we have been wrapped. However, the consecration of this method as an exclusionary paradigm is in danger of monopolizing all research and, as it happened before with religions, anathematizing any search that doesn't agree with its principles and its particular etiology. Fortunately the human being is not only curious, but has two opposite and complementary halves in his brain; while one concerns pre-eminently rational factors, the other has the ability of feeding on the mystery, the absurd and the unconscious. This unique way of receiving, storing and analyzing the information, can fill holes as a whole, which add up much more than its parts. What we commonly call intuition, inspiration or muses, are the glowing result of these infinite combinations of variables that allow us to discover new things, to ruminate now intellectually, now experientially, and transit through recesses of consciousness and reality never before imagined. There is a "magic" brain in front of a rational brain, a female one versus a male one. Even if the mind is only a biological device with a dual conformation, the more we

“Most people are bent on confusing two completely different concepts: spirituality and religion.

"Magic is a bridge. A bridge that allows you to walk from the visible world over into the invisible world, and to learn the lessons of both those worlds." Paulo Coelho study it, the more it allows us to understand that precisely, thanks to its peculiar chaotic order, it's capable of continually challenging limits and barriers once considered insurmountable. In the most intuitive cerebral hemisphere, irrational options are established, sometimes failed and others surprisingly exact. It's in here where spiritual considerations acquire the shape of thoughts and certainties, on the other hand absurd for the rational mind. This mechanism is certainly more empathetic and has direct connections with everything emotional, and the emotional, with the visceral. It's difficult to speak about the hidden thing without falling into quasi-universal errors. Most people are bent on confusing two completely different concepts: spirituality and religion. Spirituality includes everything that takes part of the study and interaction with the invisible. Religion establishes an aprioristic system of beliefs based - or not - on a phenomenon of revelation, which establishes a line of rituals and a morality associated with a particular ethic. We can find forms of spirituality within the framework of a religion, but they will always be conditioned to a specific doctrine. This dependence, this previous axis of constraining conditions, greatly limits the possibilities of its acolytes to approach the phenomenon of the invisible without prejudice, because, as the old Spanish saying goes, one tends to see things with the color of the glasses with which he looks at them. In other words, truth is in the eye of the beholder. On the other hand, morality tends to divide things into good and bad. In the world of the invisible, as in the material world, things are not white or black, but are formed by an infinite range of grays. If to these constraints we add the most evident of all, that is, that the invisible world "is not seen", we can get an idea of the amount of nonsense that we can obtain when mixing the factors of this equation. Only in this new millennium are we are being able to start glimpsing a frame of references alien to any fanaticism, which allows us to reconsider our vision of the occult without blinkers or earmuffs. The understanding that matter has more emptiness than matter itself, however much it's been difficult to us overcoming the old Physics textbooks, and the realization that everything is energy, opens the door of hope so that the more intelligent ones can question the spiritual realm from other perspectives. Confirmed phenomena, such as thought transmission, bilocation, forecasting of events, etc., possess a broader frame of possibilities of study when they are considered from the perspective of a much more porous vision of reality, linked to new concepts, such as the existence of

multiple dimensions, the folding of space-time, etc. Anyway, we continue to be in the dark because through modern Physics we can only explain 35% of the matter of the Universe, while Dark Matter, which we don't know what it is, occupies much more than what we can see. It would be arrogant from our part wanting to settle down in half-truths that allow us to glimpse a part of our brain while we ignore other one, and vice versa. Tools are not everything, but they make up a condition that we can't ignore. Even in this area we continue being blind, since we still don't fully understand its functioning; all we can do is measuring it here and there, like the blind men of the Indian tale who defined what an elephant was by the piece of body they had at hand. In the future, phenomena like mediumship and other forms of discontinuous perception of the consensuated reality will be widely echoed among the people who now approach them with suspicion and ignorance. The curious thing is that we are talking about phenomena much more common than we all imagine. We have them so much integrated into our everyday life that we don't even think they can be increased and developed. Considered as the result of intuition, of the unconscious, we never question their parenthood or the mechanisms that activate them, thus missing an exceptional tool to understand the mechanisms that allow us to transcend dimensions and communicate with others' consciousness. Ancient as it might be, spirituality is the most modern subject that human beings can research nowadays, and given that the tools and intellectual context are others, the possibilities are extraordinary. In countries like Brazil, it's weird that psychiatrists don't consider spiritual factors as an essential reference point in dealing with their patients. Barriers are falling, because a world based on rational perception is just a dry skeleton without the necessary sinuosity that animates it. Spirituality is the life broth in which every

“A new vision of spirituality, not necessarily mystical, not necessarily religious, is not only possible, but also absolutely necessary.”

interesting thing is cooked; it's where the mystery dwells and where great things are resolved. In the end, the material is only a mirror, a recreation substantiated and sustained by that flat perception of eating, drinking, sleeping, defecating, reproducing (or at least trying) and dying. Material is the plane where it is constituted a Universe that is only coherent in the visible world, because when we get out of its daily parameters, whether micro or macro, we fall into the inversion of laws; and in the confusion and in the marasmus of our ignorance we intellectually want to square the circle forgetting that we can live it up. Who wants to stay there alone? A new vision of spirituality, not necessarily mystical, not necessarily religious, is not only possible, but also absolutely necessary. The paradox is that I found it in the old ways of an ancient Japanese tradition, that of the Shizen culture; and without renouncing my two parts of my brain, and of my being (quite the opposite!), I understood that ancient people were simply previous, but by no means idiot, and certainly had much to teach us when facing mystery with an open mind and, above all, "two hard balls" to transit between both worlds with a determination and a courage that would frighten the boldest one. No! Don't expect that anybody crosses in your way and "civilizes" you with regard to these topics. That only happens in the movies! When the paths are real, there is no proselytizing or desire to convince anyone of anything; rather, you find a wall of secrecy and if you really want to learn, you inexorably have to pay a price of effort and prove that you deserve receiving that knowledge. As it happens in life, if someone gives you anything as a gift is only because he wants to sell you something, so be suspicious of cure-all balsam sellers, instantaneous conversions, mystical enthusiasm, or spiritual "goodisms". If you really want to know what spirituality is all about, put on your work clothes and be ready for whatever may come… Courage and hold that bull by the horns!

Commando Krav Maga

17 years ago we did our first work with this innovator and always creative Master, Moni Aizik. Today I have again the pleasure to present a new video of Moni, a great work with the best techniques of Commando Krav Maga. "The Best of Commando Krav Maga" presents some of the most intelligent answers to different defense situations, perfectly explained and reasoned, just the way Master Aizik likes. One of the characteristics of his style is the simplicity he always demonstrates. But simple things aren’t necessarily as simple as they seem at first sight; they require reflection, testing, experience and tons of common sense. Not everybody would have been able to do a summary so well designed! Moni Aizik has demonstrated his mastery on this subject and for this reason he has managed to seduce many martial artists interested in effective personal defense. Don't miss it! Alfredo Tucci

Commando Krav Maga

Between the mat and a hard place First rule of Fight Club: “There are no rules” So you're taking your man down. This is what you train to be able to do and you're pretty good at it, done it a lot of times. Your hands are moving intuitively. After all those hours on the mat they seem to work alone, as do your legs. You have your man, no doubt about it. But as you tighten up around him like a Boa Constrictor a searing pain shoots up your body. Has this guy actually just bitten you? Hey Ref! Actually he's just stabbed you with a previously concealed blade. This isn't a fair fight right? No it's not. It's a street fight and there are no mats between you and the hard place, and certainly no Ref. Now you have to hope that someone calls for a medic and that your man and his friends are now bored with you and are willing to leave you with just the one puncture wound. So, as you lie there getting cold you ask yourself “what did I do wrong”? Well, you got confused and your training took over. You train to win competitive sporting events and this was a fight for survival. Different rules, or more accurately, no rules at all. Time for some serious questions and answers….

“Reality based training is exploding globally and guess who frequently fronts the queue? Martial Artists!

Commando Krav Maga A huge number of people across the world are now training in the fine art of grappling. Many train hard and some even compete. But they compete within a framework; they follow rules which allow technique, finesse and skill to shine. Victory is paramount but you can go away and live with your defeat if necessary. They don't execute the loser anymore, not done so for a few thousand years in fact. So you go home happy or you go home sad. But you get to go home. Even in “No Holds Barred” fighting there are prohibitions. You don't get to take a steak knife into the cage, again, wrong Century! So we all get to roll with each other, hurt each other a little, compete, maybe win, maybe lose but, accidents aside, we will not be traveling home in a body bag. If, on the other hand, you are suddenly cast into the midst of a fight for your own survival the end game is completely uncertain and you must adhere to one rule only: You must survive. The person who you are fighting wants to hurt you badly, maybe even kill you, you certainly won't be showering together afterwards. In all probability at least one of you will be seriously injured, because, and this is the crux, that is the goal, the incapacitation of the opponent. No points or trophies or cheering fans, simply the ability to survive and see tomorrow. Of course all street fights don't end with fatalities but this one may, or the next one. When the stakes are this high the outcome cannot be predicted. Not everyone here is a “winner”. It's not the taking part that counts. It's the surviving the situation. So, why did you lose? On the street the ground is a very dangerous place to be. To survive effectively on the street you should be looking to escape, if possible, at all times, only engaging with your attacker if absolutely necessary. If conflict is unavoidable and a response is imperative then it must be incredibly fast, efficient and devastating. You are not there to impress, you shouldn't still be there at all. You should be fleeing the scene. This is difficult to implement from the ground for obvious reasons. Ok you know what you're doing there but even though this may seem like familiar territory it is very very different. Maybe he didn't have a knife; maybe he did just bite you, or gouged your eye. Maybe you are so good that he couldn't do any of these things and is now just quietly turning purple. But do you think that your man's friends are going to throw in the towel for their accomplice and drag him away after asking you where you train? No they are going to kick your head like a football, or hit it with a bar stool, or stamp on you, or use any old bottle, knife or bat they may happen to have to swing the fight back in their friend's favor. This is not fiction. This is reality and thousands of versions of this story have ruined or ended the lives of innocent people everywhere. Yes it's an unpleasant thought, yes you may never encounter it but yes it has always, and will always, continue to happen and the rules remain the same: there are no rules.

“A huge number of people across the world are now training in the fine art of grappling. Many train hard and some even compete. But they compete within a framework; they follow rules which allow technique, finesse and skill to shine.”

Commando Krav Maga Between the mat and a hard place

“Moni was responsible for counter-terrorism and intelligence gathering behind enemy lines and fought in the Yom Kippur War.

So what's a grappler to do? Well, keep grappling for sure. Even on the street this is a hugely beneficial skill to have. But learn to think differently and respect the terrain: To get from A to B a car is a great tool. Michael Schumaker knows how to drive one of these things right? You think his journey home from the track resembles the one he just made out on the circuit? He has to drive differently and respect the terrain. If he allows his incredible skill to take the next right at over 100mph he may kill a pedestrian. His ability is certainly useful but he has to differentiate and act accordingly. And you have to be all-terrain! This can happen at any time at any given place. You are likely to be going about your business, maybe daydreaming and relaxed, maybe distracted, ill, hell you may even be drunk! Getting in or out of your car, in your bed (if you're in someone else's bed then maybe you deserve it). Maybe it's pitch black or low light or incredibly slippery underfoot. Maybe you are in an elevator or other cramped space. You will not be prepared mentally or physically for this encounter which is why how you have trained up until that point may, or may not, be all you have. Reality based training is exploding globally and guess who frequently fronts the queue? Martial Artists! And some very highly qualified ones at that. These are all people whose long and hard journey has left them with a feeling of unease regarding their own safety. What they undoubtedly find, once training for the street, is that all their skill and prowess is incredibly useful, and some of it even transferable to the new goal of survival. But they learn the difference between the mat and the hard place. No gloves here, no pulled punches, no bell, just a crazy scrabble to survive. No weight matching and no agreed techniques. And remember that there's no time limit here, it takes as long as it takes and there's certainly no tapping out with the only likely conclusion being serious injury or even death. Unlike a competition your opponent on the street will most probably be a complete stranger possibly fuelled by a lot more than protein drinks (drugs and drink can make people immensely strong, impervious to pain and highly unpredictable). This is messy, ugly looking stuff and always dirty.

Mat + Reality = Commando Krav Maga Moni Aizik is the founder of Commando Krav Maga and a former member of the Israeli Special Forces Elite Commando Unit. With over 30 years of combat experience, Moni started his martial arts training at the age of 8, winning 7 national Jiujitsu and Judo titles in his youth. Joining the military at 18, Moni was responsible for counter-terrorism and intelligence gathering behind enemy lines and fought in the Yom Kippur War. After his military service, Moni continued teaching handto-hand combat to Israeli Special Forces ,Commandos , law enforcement and extended his teachings to the civilian sectors. Moni frequently travel to Japan to study the technical wizardry of World Judo and Sambo Champions Isao Okano and Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki. In the meantime, his club in Israel, Maccabi Tel Aviv, was quickly becoming recognized as the defacto national training center, with hundreds students training in Commando Krav Maga Jiujitsu and judo!

Commando Krav Maga

Commando Krav Maga Among Moni's best Israeli students: Yael Arad the nation's first Olympic and World medalist Moving to North America in the eighties, Moni was the first one to Introduce Krav Maga to the Canadian when he start teaching at the J.C.C in Toronto.2 years Later he would go on to demonstrate his abilities in elite instruction, as he would establish one of the most successful schools in Canada, which was the first in Canada to teach Israeli fighting systems and Jiujitsu ,Moni's club become an house for another generation of Reality based -Commando Krav Maga students and Jiujitsu fighters! Moni's students literally dominated every competition, either provincial or national Among them : champions and world famous No Holds Barred fighters, including Ultimate Fighting Champion Carlos Newton, Japanese Shooto star Joel Gerson and more. Many years spent teaching the highest echelons in the military, civilian and sporting communities has formed an unparalleled knowledge base out of which was eventually evolved Commando Krav Maga. Through in-depth studies of biomechanics, reaction time and force-velocity relationships thousands of techniques were modified and distilled into a practical system which is both easy to learn and recall under stress. CKM combines the most useful elements taught to one of the toughest militaries in the world, the Israeli Special Forces, with the no holds barred octagon environment (like the UFC), and Olympic level martial arts and mental training. The goal of CKM is to teach anyone how to survive and be a win on the street and in life. These moves, coupled with a set of fundamental principles, rigorous testing and re appraisal make CKM an increasingly popular choice for the civilian sector as well as elite military and law enforcement agencies worldwide. These principles are a vital aspect of survival which is as much a matter of psychology as physiology. The correct mental approach to self defense cannot be overstated. On the street you are going to feel and react differently and you must train accordingly. In CKM the student will drill these principles as much as the moves and learn what to bring with them to the street and what to leave behind on the mat. First up, throw the towel in!

Danger lies below If you gotta go down then so be it. You may even decide to take your man down. But you do not want to spend a second longer than necessary in this vulnerable position. Has he a blade? Is he alone? Do you want to be bitten or gouged? So it has to be down, devastate, up and away. Using pressure and weakness points the CKM student will seek to disengage at all times, also studying the correct way to get back to the feet in order to retain balance and guard, and hasten the retreat. They call it the 5 second rule and if you are not up by then you're in trouble. The devil may be whispering to stay down and lock him up, don't listen, remember, up up and away. In CKM remaining upright is seen as infinitely

Commando Krav Maga preferable but not always possible so an equal understanding of grappling and the ground is sought. The system also favors large gross motor movements, proven under stress so a stomp to the head before escape will lessen the chances of being chased. Get him off you, get up, stamp him and get away. Forget finesse; forget complicated sequences that will elude you when you most need them. Think: what is the very least I can do to incapacitate this person? This is not chess, pick the board up and smash him with it, then run.

Tools of the trade

“If you gotta go down then so be it. You may even decide to take your man down. But you do not want to spend a second longer than necessary in this vulnerable position.

But what trade? A punch could easily break your hand, a spin kick unlikely to help you, the unleashing of your fencing foil pure folly unless the debacle is being choreographed by John Woo. Survival is a different trade and knowing what not to do is imperative. Experienced martial artists looking to expand their knowledge for use outside of the gym need to learn to temper their instinct which may, through hard labor, now be more geared towards the art than the martial. In Commando Krav Maga the student will train for all eventualities and learn to facilitate a compact range of responses under the ultimate stress: a fight for survival. Economy is the key here with all superfluous movement removed enabling a swift and efficient reaction.

The art of not going to war You'd look pretty strange if, after the bow, you ran from the mat and hot footed it out of the gym and down the road right? Or if you told your opponent you didn't want to fight? So the front end has already got a very different vibe to the street. You don't want to fight this guy(s), so quickly, pack up the ego and flee. Don't worry about the testosterone, save it for the bedroom. Go home and think about how lucky the guy(s) is, if only he knew! Choose not to fight, choose to live. The distance between yourself and the attacker is a vital part of CKM. You aim is to widen that distance and keep it that way if possible. Unless carrying a gun he cannot hurt you from a distance right? (Gun disarming is an absolute last option and must be carried out as closely to the attacker as possible, but this is an exception). Remember that most street fights start very differently than competition sparring. No warming up either. Pre emptive shots should be expected and most attacks will be prefaced by verbal communication, deception and then the sucker punch. Remember your attacker's goal. See it from his angle, why would he not play it this way? You want to him to shake hands first? You want a quick stretch? Ok so maybe you can't flee and maybe you can't maintain your distance. It happens, onto Plan B. A quick resolution is now required. We don't want to roll, spar or cuddle with this character. We want to bid him farewell as soon as possible and with an air of finality. So (back to the bedroom): IN, BANG, OUT! Not: In, you bang, him bang, you bang, his friend bangs, you bang bang bang to teach lesson, etc etc. Get it? You do not want a conversation. You do not want to trade. You want to be elsewhere. Remove the obstacle and proceed. And remember that you are not Judge Dread; you are not there to administer punishment, leave that to the law. It is unfortunate that you are there at all, now do what you have to, in the shortest possible time, and escape. Economy is essential.

Commando Krav Maga

Commando Krav Maga Stress Head You have to get your stress head on to train realistically. You have to acknowledge the fundamental differences in biology that will occur when you are fighting for your life. Stress Testing is paramount in Commando Krav Maga, not an add-on. Every class will see students facing multiple attackers inside, outside, cold, hot, in the dark and confused further by loud music or obstacles. They will be exhausted by cardio exercise, then disorientated by spinning, then choked or punched or kicked continually until barely able to stand. This closely simulates reality. No point training for the nice warm gym with nice soft mats right? You have to embrace all eventualities and expect the unexpected. If, after the first class, you do not get to your feet fast enough, then expect a thwack. You will soon come to understand the reasoning behind the methods. Better to be thwacked with a pad than a barstool right?

A view from the ground Experienced grappler and teacher, and newly qualified level 2 CKM instructor, Anthony “Little Tony Pacenski Jr joins the growing ranks of martial artists looking to supplement their existing knowledge with reality based training. Tony has a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu having studied under Rodrigo Medeiros as well as Relson, Royce, Rorian, and Helio Gracie and has achieved much success in his field. Basically, this guy can grapple! So why did he choose to expand his search, and why did he choose Commando Krav Maga?

Commando Krav Maga

“Moni Aizik is the founder of Commando Krav Maga and a former member of the Israeli Special Forces Elite Commando Unit.”

Tony explained that despite the amazing evolution in most components of BJJ (Kimono training, No-Gi submission grapping, MMA etc) in the last ten years the self defense aspect of the system is lacking with 7 out of 10 clubs not even addressing this area. Despite the overall emphasis on sparring within this discipline Tony feels that there are no realistic self defense drills or testing of the moves. This testing is one of the many aspects, alongside weapon defense, which has drawn him to CKM. The aforementioned difference in confrontational psychology coupled with awareness of ethics and the law also greatly appealed. Tony runs a highly successful school and was keen to embrace a reality based system to offer his many students. He has clearly found what he was looking for and has now himself got a foot in both camps. With Moni's grappling background both as a competitor and coach it's easy to see why his system attracts people from the grappling world even though he is encouraging them to question how they think. He himself has arrived at these principles through immense hard work and questioning and a lifetime of study. Broadminded fighters like Tony clearly feel in safe hands when leaving their comfort zone in search of personal growth.

Time to face reality

Martial Arts “To speak is a blasphemy, to remain silent deception. Beyond silence and speaking we encounter another condition, But my mouth is not large enough to name it.”

Guidelines to Corporal Learning During Apprenticeship We commence with some general observations, which are as important as they are basic in all types of learning of corporal dynamics. The first is the need to harmonize the bodily movements and sensations with their verbal explanations . It is impossible to explain anything relating to the body by speaking continuously to the novice that all the corporal movements we are practicing are going to cause pleasant or unpleasant bodily sensations, metabolic variations, etc. It is essential that, during the class, the highest percentage of time –but much the higher- correspond to sensitive corporal practice. For this reason, there should be minimal resort to verbal explanations, only in order to vary some sensations or movements that help the student be aware of the inner depth of his body. In this manner, he discovers his own corporal language. Overuse of words bewilder the students by anticipating for them sensations which, without more intense and exigent corporal practice, will in reality, never really be felt. This plan may give excellent "chrematistic "results, which are nonetheless deceptive constituting an opportunistic maneuver of the predisposition of people to be influenced by that which is in fashion. This is true in the best of cases, since the response of the majority, in not really feeling that which the professor preaches, would be a frustrating mixture of deception, incapacity and stress. This state would result in very negative consequences to their corporal and mental health. On the opposite extreme of the pendulum where the learning factor is based on imitating the movements of the professor, we find there is no verbal help. In reality, this system, which is very representative of Zen philosophy, leads directly to the discovery of one’s personal corporal idiom and to more than a few peculiarities of personality and psychosomatic equilibrium of the practitioner. At the same time, it is a selective sieve of very fine mesh. Only those who show a ferocious will to conquer are capable of passing through, with considerable effort and after lengthy, daily and uninterrupted practice: an authentic proof “al so” of the individual. Nonetheless, those of us who are in the teaching world of Martial Arts, or of any other type of corporal dynamics, do not have the mission of selecting so meticulously our students, but rather of trying to minimize their anxieties, their defects and bodily alterations. By doing this, the teachers restore and fortify the equilibrium between the students´ minds, bodies and the ambiences in which they live. Under this conceptual prism there is a middle position in the swing of the pendulum which, on the other hand, does not imply that the percentages of corporal movements face to face words are the same. This third alternative is based on the undeniable fact that verbalization, the correct use of speech, serves to reduce the training periods needed to rediscover the corporal language. Consequently, by speeding the correction process of the body-mind balance, it permits eliminating in a shorter time the unpleasant sensations, the anxiety, opening at the same time a new door to stimulating sensitive perceptions forgotten due to lack of use of the corporal potentials.

Martial Arts

“Our Ki must flow freely throughout our body and, only in the case of a obvious invasion of our existential space, elude that of the opponent or avoid it, letting it go by and later throwing it back on him.”

I would advise a very reduced use of speech during the first six months of physical practice, limiting it to the necessary movement description and the verbalization of generic conflicts, like the one of the “dizzy duck” that have very positive repercussions on the practitioner’s spirit. This is the minimum time to start awakening from the long physical lethargy, to perceive the first interior coordination sensations of muscular movement. From this point on, and until the second year after initialization is completed, the general sensations implicit in each technique must be verbalized. For example, working in slow motion, with the eyes shut, following the energy flow from the lower abdomen through all the muscles involved in the movement. After finishing the second year –when the physical training is practically irreversible or easily recovered, it is essential to verbalize the specific sensations of each movement, mainly of balance, control and emotions, even when in each individual there might present some specific nuance or slight differentiation according to his personality and structure. A second and very important consideration is the irreplaceable need to resort to a Master to initiate us in the apprenticeship of the Martial Arts. There is too much symbolism, too much esoteric content enclosed in the philosophy of these “corporal” disciplines so as to be able to understand them without the aid of a Master who will set us along the path and indicate the subtleties and basic energetic moves, even when their elaboration and consequent adaptation is an individual job. Any book, or the best of them, can be a good study accessory, an excellent colleague, but it will never take the place of the Master’s figure, at least during the first four years of practice. Texts on technique are thought and written according to the capacities and peculiarities of an average individual, which in itself compels the reader’s adaptation to his personal characteristics. If we add to this all the symbolic, energetic and emotional content which, more or less consciously, is implied by the apprenticeship, it’s not difficult to recognize the impossibility of initiating it resorting to the study of texts as the only developmental path. Of course the text is useful, but always counting it as additional help. Each individual has a differentiated and unrepeatable genetic code, structural hues, both emotional and intellectual, that require an occasional specific treatment, either on a good physical or verbal level, that only the Master – and both together as the training develops and new facets are discovered – can work adequately. In the practice of yoga, for example, there are five paths that lead to the same end: the yin-yang equilibrium, the knowledge of the absolute truth, the perfection, and the transition to superior levels of knowledge and of life.

These five paths or yoga types are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Raja-Yoga or conscience development Yoga Jnana-Yoga or knowledge Yoga Bhakti-yoga or correct religious attitude Yoga Karma-Yoga or correct actions Yoga Hatha-yoga or power over the body Yoga

They were established depending on the different types of men, of their capacities, their preparation, and their primary existing needs. Each individual, depending on his peculiarities, would choose a certain type of Yoga, even though, due to the corporal demands derived from the strong emotional states reached by the other paths. It’s advisable to begin with the Hatha-Yoga, with the control and strengthening of the physical body.

Martial Arts The same procedure is valid and applicable to the practice of Martial Arts; there are those who feel more identified with the softer schools (Yin) than with the harder schools (Yang). However the need to liberate the aggressiveness, the negative energies accumulated by our absurd and rigorous way of life, in addition to the need to combine and harmonize the Yin and Yang, takes us to a harmonic and combined apprenticeship of both tendencies. The personal desire to dedicate oneself in a balanced way to a sinuous corporal practice, non-violent, such as Tai Chi Chuang or Aikido, both Yin, requires from us an unblocking, a liberation and previous control of the aggressiveness through a hard discipline, Yang, such as Karate-do. We must always keep in mind that the normalization of the vital signs, of the indexes of adrenaline in blood, can neutralize the aggressive component, at a physical level, but not at a fantasy level. In other words, while we do not solve our aggressive fantasies, the practice of a “non-violent corporal discipline” can indefinitely cover up the problem and its consequences, aggravating it with the passage of time by not being operative at that level. Another important aspect in the apprenticeship of these disciplines is formed by the unquestionable reality of the other bodies, of their area of influence and behavior. That is to say, the trainee must inter-relate at a corporal level with his colleagues, learning to know their conduct as well as the minimum dimensions of their vital space, respecting their influence areas or defending one’s own in the of feeling invaded. This can be learned basically during a couple of technical practices and in self-control combats, most of all after the moment in which one reaches consciousness of his own body and is capable of coordinating it according to his center and dimensions in space. It is when one is conscious, at an instinctive level, of his own existential spatial awareness and is capable of situating and relating himself with that of the others in a harmonic and non-compulsive way. It’s important that our vital energy, our Ki, does not enter in conflict, does not frontally oppose the Ki of the other person, with the subsequent energy consumption that it causes and the violence feelings it generates. That will only serve to alter our interior equilibrium. Our Ki must flow freely throughout our body and, only in the case of a definite invasion of our existential space, elude that of the opponent or deflecting it, letting it pass by (parallel) and then throw it back on him. The others, at a corporal as well as mental level, are there; they occupy a place in space and time and we must learn how to walk among them respecting their territories, their rights and making us respect ours, how to inter-communicate and achieve solidarity without speaking. During the apprenticeship it is also essential to keep in mind the aim, the objective we expect to achieve through the practice of these disciplines, which, at all times, must coincide with some of the aspects within its philosophy, and, therefore, be linked in a more or less conscious way with the reinforcing or strengthening of our mind-body-environment balance. Of course, our apparent motivation might be circumscribed exclusively to aspects such as acquiring security, self-control or eliminating physical defects. This is perfectly valid and coherent, as long as we do not forget during the apprenticeship the intention of the mode we are using - Martial Arts: paths towards liberty, not destruction. Those who seek by way of the knowledge of these disciplines, the negative application of their physical potential for their own purposes are undoubtedly performing muscular work but are in no way practicing Martial Arts. Sifu Alfred Johannes Neudorfer and Sifu Rosa Ferrante Bannera, founders of Wing Tsun Universe - WTU, a movement which characterizes not by the use of techniques, but of qualities, exchanges, principles and concepts of movement - focus their first DVD in Siu Nim Tao (SNT) or "9 ways". The SNT is the basis of Wing Tsun, Wing Chun and WTU. The understanding thereof is the basic condition for everything that comes after, because if you observe the way people perform the sequences of this movement, you can easily deduce what they will be able to do. If something is wrong with the movement, everything the practitioner will later develop will be erroneous. WTU movements (forms) involve inherent functions from which can derive applications. The significance of the primary movements makes them derive in other movements and to generate applications based on the principles and interactions that help to their understanding. The WTU also incorporates an extra "set" its founders considered necessary due to the current circumstances. The DVD includes the Movement (form) Siu Nim Tao, its 9 sequences and applications, sequences 1 to 3 of the first movement with a training partner (Chi Sao) and a revealing interview with the founders of the WTU.

Dragon (龍): The motions of the dragon serve to refine one’s spirit. The applied techniques are based on the philosophy of the element earth. In itself, the dragon teaches to strengthen and lead one’s Chi. It only embodies few fighting techniques, as the main task of the dragon is to exercise inner strength based on breath control. ven a layman is able to distinguish the five constitutive animalstyles of the original Hung Gar Kung Fu, namely tiger, crane, snake, leopard and dragon, as each one has its very own characteristics. For example the tiger: its techniques are strong, direct and explosive. Or the crane style, who’s winglike movements are soft but fast. However, one animal in the Hung Gar Kung Fu remains an enigma, which is the dragon. As a mythological creature it is the only animal in the Hung Gar Kung Fu which does not exist physiologically. Nonetheless, it is an established element within this ancient martial art. Within the theory of the five elements, the dragon is being allocated to the element ‘earth’, and is considered as very wise and powerful in spirit. Generally, the dragon is associated with special hand postures and tactics. Many practitioners know though that this style includes intense exercise with the chi, our internal power. Even though the chi, which is also called ‘qi’, is not tangible and conjoined with our spirit, it is as real as any other kind of energy. Not mere muscular strength but rather will power and a strong spirit lead to success, which is why beginners perceive the focused practice with the chi as very difficult. Each technique, as well as each animal in the Hung

E

GM  Sewer Gar Kung Fu, is based on the principles of chi. The dragon style, however, is particularly intended to teach how to steer and strengthen the chi, which is being implemented by practicing the age-old breathing techniques. Looking at the dragon style (Lung Ying style) in its entirety, an intent observer may identify a rapid succession of forceful fighting techniques and claw-like movements which impersonate the dragon. Hung Gar Kung Fu takes on the essence of the dragon as a creature and therefore the dragon style comprises only a few fighting techniques. In this style, as already mentioned before, the ‘real’ practice is achieved by the slow Qi Gung (“chi labor”) exercises and the strengthening of the spirit. On a beginner’s level, such exercises may lead to the impression that these meditative processes have no reference at all to a real fight. However, they are mistaken. To use the words of the Kung Fu legend, Grandmaster and official Hung Gar Kung Fu style leader Dr. Chiu Chi Ling: “Many people think that the dragon, an animal which does not really exist, is reduced to breathing exercises and qi techniques. This is a pity, because in reality, there is no element in Hung Gar Kung Fu which is NOT meant for fighting. This is also true for the dragon.” In other words, there is much more to the dragon techniques than simple breathing and/or health exercises and, as Grandmaster Chiu Chi Ling indicates, each element in Hung Gar is meant for a real fight of life and death. Besides, the people in

Kung Fu

ancient China could not afford to practice a martial art that would not protect their lives and possessions. If a predator succeeded to steal the monthly wage at just one occasion, a farmer could have been ruined as he was not able to pay for seeds, food and basic goods. Hence, self-defense and the struggle for survival were of essential importance and there was no space for futile and useless techniques in the traditional martial arts. Taking this background information into consideration, we are not only able to fully understand the dragon, but to distinguish the traditional from the modern martial arts. You have to admit that acrobatics are not very effective in a fight man against man, right? As already mentioned before, if you are looking for concrete dragon style techniques you will mainly find breathing exercises and only a few fighting techniques. Now and then one might believe to recognize something as dragon specific, as for instance if the practitioner imitates the claws or fangs of these mythological creatures. For adepts, the dragon’s techniques are very fascinating as the techniques often have similar characteristics and resemble techniques of another animal. Paying closer attention, they recognize that the dragon’s techniques seem to have their own logic and principles. However, from the outside it seems as if practitioners, who try to learn more, are soon back to the slow and focused breathing exercises and the sometimes odd vocal sounds. We are able to perceive techniques and learn them so why is it nonetheless very difficult to understand how the

GM  Sewer

Kung Fu dragon is applied in a fight? One approach to explain this question lies in the dragon’s nature as a style, which is meant to refine and sensitize the spirit and a practitioner often needs to readjust the way he has been training so far. Although Hung Gar students experience this on an early stage of their training, only a few of them get to the point where they are able to truly understand the dragon. Why? Grandmaster Chiu Chi Ling: “The problem nowadays is that practitioners only rarely advance to the level needed to grasp complex systems like the dragon. There are no secrets or detained knowledge, but if one only scratches on the surface and/or is learning from a mediocre teacher, he will never be able to understand it.” By now, most people have realized that behind the abstract fighting concept of the dragon lies the purpose to fight for your life. Some people are even aware of the connection between the dragon and the element ‘earth’ in the Hung Gar. A true understanding and appreciation however only emerges when a student achieves a certain level. Only after having studied and practiced something for a certain period of time, one is able to comprehend it in-depth. Yet, the only determinant a student can actually control himself is what kind of teacher he chooses. If someone has a teacher who is constantly trying to deepen and enhance his skills and knowledge, the sky is the limit. However, the number of people with profound skills and knowledge decreases with the depth of the skills and knowledge in a certain department. The structure of a pyramid is a perfect metaphor for this paradigm: Many people are familiar with the basics, but only a few know and understand the profound knowledge within this field. This is also the case in the Hung Gar Kung Fu. Only the strong-willed and devoted student who is eager to learn will find his way to the top and as a consequence will sooner or later comprehend abstract and complex principles like the dragon style. This is an indispensable requirement to ensure the viability of the true and original Shaolin Hung Gar Kung Fu. Are you going to be one of those who will perpetuate this knowledge?

SGM Jose Ortega, the living legend of Kajukenbo Kosho Ryu Grandmaster JosĂŠ Ortega is a highly respected figure in the world of Martial Arts. Now we have the opportunity to know a little more about his career, his work and his plans for the future.

Budo International: Greetings Master! Is this your first visit to Spain? SGM JosĂŠ Ortega: No, this is my third visit to this beautiful place. B.I.: Tell us a little about your career. SGM: I've been involved in Martial Arts for about 50 years. I was privileged to learn the Kajukenbo Kenpo Karate system, the Kajukenbo Kosho Ryu system, to develop the Advanced Defense System and to form the first organization of these fighting methods in Puerto Rico. B.I.: Is that why they call you the "Father of Kajukenbo" in Puerto Rico"? SGM: That's right. All the instructors of Kajukenbo schools that exist in Puerto Rico have studied with me or have been students of those students. B.I.: Who were your masters in Kajukenbo? SGM: I had the opportunity to study with Sifu George L. Jackson, Sifu Jerry Wright Jr., Ahgung Antonio "Tony" Ramos, SGM Jaime Basquez, SGM Mike Young and SGM Ming Lum. Each one provided me with a knowledge that transformed my life, especially master Ming Lum, who put a great emphasis in his teachings of philosophy.

B.I.: Can you have so many teachers? SGM: Yes, the important thing is to have the first master's permission to study with the next master, and understand that you must be faithful to each one of them for life, so you have to respect them and recognize them as such. This rule is not easy to follow, but it should not be violated. B.I.: It is said that there are no rules in Kajukenbo; can you explain to us a little more about this subject? SGM: In a competition, you have to follow some rules. But when you have to defend your life, there are no rules to follow. That refers to the art of the system. But, in order to live in peace and in healthy coexistence, human organizations, be it a family, a company or an association need to establish rules the purpose of which must be that of preserving peace and harmony among its members. Violating the simplest rule is attacking the harmony that should prevail. I've seen students who leave their master (on their own free will or because other "masters" suggest them to do that) and seek shelter with another master. The sad thing is that there are "masters" who accept them and, what is worse, promote them to much higher ranks or belts without teaching them anything, simply for money and power. What these "masters" don't know is that they become parasites, according to the language of those of us who know the rules.

B.I.: A little while ago you mentioned three arts: Kajukenbo Kenpo Karate, Kajukenbo Kosho Ryu and Advanced Defense System. What is the difference among them? SGM: The first is what I call traditional Kajukenbo. Its techniques emphasize the Kenpo and Karate styles, so its movements tend to be somewhat linear and look more rigid. The Kajukenbo Kosho Ryu on its part contains more fluid movements because it rather uses Kenpo Jiu-Jitsu techniques, which offer the option of having more control on the opponent without removing the destructive power of the previous system. The Advanced Defense System is a method in which you truly seek to integrate the Ka-Ju-Ken-Bo ideal. The techniques are much more fluid, practical and effective (by integrating the teaching method of the octagon), or adapted to the reality of our time. B.I.: What do you think about the current situation of Kajukenbo? SGM: Traditional Kajukenbo, which is commonly practiced as a self-defense system, is very good and strong, but it has remained at a basic level. B.I.: How can a good and strong system be basic? SGM: Thanks to Master Ming Lum I understood that there are three levels of difficulty within the Martial Arts: basic, semi-advanced and advanced.

I discovered that, after almost 40 years of experience, and believing that I was one of the best, I was only a master at the basic level, teaching a basic level. And what I see now is that the same thing is happening to other Kajukenbo masters. I could recognize it and I could learn, but for other masters it's not easy to understand or recognize that there is something beyond what they have had for years. To that is added the loss of respect for the rules. B.I.: What would you like to tell the students? SGM: I would like to remind everyone that only the Eternal Almighty has the power of strengthening our spirit, mind and body, represented in so many logos with a clover. To practitioners of any Martial Art, I'd like to encourage them to keep seeking the truth, understand it and teach it.

“I discovered that, after almost 40 years of experience, and believing that I was one of the best, I was only a master at the basic level, teaching a basic level.

What are the three types of reaction of your fellow human beings? Often if you do something new or do something different then you have to expect according to the stage:

1) Mocking: Mocking is not serious, but can hurt some people, or demotivate. Mocking occurs in the first phase when something is new. Mocking is not based on truth and is mostly totally unobjective. "He can not do anything because he is fat" ‌.. 2) Criticism: If something has existed for a longer period of time, and some success has also been achieved, then mocking is no longer appropriate. Then it is criticized. There are constructive criticism and destructive criticism. Almost everything is destructive criticism, because for constructive criticism someone has to be an absolute expert, of what you. For example, WTU: we are / were criticized, some "wannabe experts" criticized us because they think as they are Sifu or an expert, they have the ability to criticize, because we all are doing Wing Tsun ..... .No, the WTU can not be criticized by them, because they do not make WTU Wing Tsun, because they are not capable of doing so. They are not experts in the WTU Wing Tsun. For example, the teacher can give constructive criticism to the student, since the teacher can and knows something the student is missing. 3) Recognition: Recognition often occurs when one is great and successful. Opponents have suddenly become silent and quiet, as there are too many people who are in favor. They are all along followers. People have recognition for something if they suspect a lot of money behind it.

Three types of control There are three types of "control" with which we can deal with situations: • The direct control • The indirect control • No direct and indirect control possible. Everything that is subject to direct control has to do with our own behavior, our own habits. It comes from our direct action. In order to change something in this area, or regain lost control, a change of behavior, a change of our habits is necessary. That sounds simple, but it is not. The good intentions of the people speak volumes about this. The first difficulty is to recognize and accept something as a result of our doing, our habit, and not guilty where else to look. The second difficulty is that every habit in our behavior is, of course, a conditioning and is triggered by a stimulus. How difficult it is to change that, life is also talking about volumes.

“Everything that is subject to direct control has to do with our own behavior, our own habits. It comes from our direct action.”

WT Universe

All that is subject to indirect control, we can not reconcile our habits in our current life. Here we must expand our field of action. We must leave our comfort zone and open up new unknown fields. This is anything but easy. The way from the unknown to the unknown. The limited but secured pasture to leave. Again, we are confronted with a series of conditioning. Fears, deficits, inexperience, etc . There are also situations that are different from our direct as well as our indirect o n e s re m o v e c o n t ro l . B u t h e re , t o o , w e h a v e a possibility of our own control our view of these events. There are opportunities and risks, there is a negative and a positive attitude. Only by changing my point of view do these possibilities open up to me.

From a strict point of view, we have the following difficulties with all three types of controls: conditioning, embossing and identification. The second grid is the rules of the game that we consider to be laws of life. They begin to define the field and produce the second type of grid bars. All that is not achievable through them is bad, dubious, impossible, dangerous, immoral, etc. Also, the viewpoint of the three "types" of control is just a web that we can throw at our attitude towards life and what we agree with is the unvarnished oneself. Not as we are from the potential, but what we have made and made of ourselves and have made. The responsibility to change this is also with us. Not with anyone else. And no one can prevent us from starting this work. GM Alfred Johannes Neudorfer

Plastic Arts and Martial Arts = Total Art The Day I Met Bruce Lee It was in 1967 when I was 17 that I saw Bruce Lee for the first time in the role of Kato in the series “The Green Hornet. This was the first time that I had seen anything related to Martial Arts and I was really impressed by his character. Kato was the chauffeur and assistant to the Green Hornet and he attacked the bad guys with kicks and strange punches making himself more important than the protagonist of the series. Although Kato was not a karate professional, for us he was the best karate professional in the world and strangely he was the only one that we knew.

Plastic Arts and Martial Arts = Total Art In those days anything having to do with Martial Arts was called Karate here in Venezuela because our lack of knowledge meant that in our personal dictionary only one word existed to describe this kind of combat and everything related to it was called. “Karate fighting”. Later when the television series called “Kung Fu” appeared the name of this new discipline was incorporated into our vocabulary, but by now our neighbourhood band of adolescent friends had already begun to study and make its way along the path of Karate-do and we went regularly to the dojo to practice kumite and katas. Thus today I cannot deny that it was thanks to Bruce Lee that we began to study the Martial Arts. Without any doubt he was the source of our inspiration. In 1972 we became devotees of the use of “nunchaku”, once again thanks to Master Lee and his film “Operation Dragon”. I remember that I saw the film many times and later I even got hold of it on the video. It was one of the old kind of Betamax videos. What I used to do was put the video on in slow motion again and again just at the point where Bruce Lee appeared using the nunchaku in a brilliant way. I would put myself in front of the television and repeat his movements with the nunchaku and try to copy the teachings of the Master. In an indirect way the Little Dragon taught me how to use them. My first nunchaku were made for me with wood and rope but later I was able to buy some black ones with an octagonal base and chains. They were the best! When we heard about the death of Bruce Lee there were many stories and hypotheses surrounding it. What did he really die from? Did the Chinese Mafia kill him for having divulged the secrets of Kung Fu to the North Americans? (In fact some still believe this today). Or did he die from an overdose of drugs? The medical report stated that Mr. Lee was complaining of a severe headache and when he took the medici-

Plastic Arts and Martial Arts = Total Art ne he suffered an allergic reaction and went in to a coma only to die later from a brain hemorrhage. All this happened in Hong Kong on the 20th July 1973. Later his body was buried in the cemetery in Seattle Washington on the 31st July 1973 which was the very day I celebrated my 23rd birthday in Milan in Italy. It was a very strange sensation for me to know that on my birthday one of my heroes was being laid to rest and in fact it is true to say that I had a hard time believing that Bruce Lee, the good guy, had really died. What happened to me was the same thing that happened to Elvis Presley fans who even today believe that the King is still alive. Bruce Lee hasn’t died for me either, he is still alive except that he left his human body behind in the same way that you would leave your clothes behind. Without doubt his pure energy still exists, the purest energy, which is his spirit. Much has been written about Bruce Lee and it seems ridiculous that we are still taking time out to talk about him even today. However, I think that it is important that the new generation knows a little more about this special person. The home and family magazine "Vanities" recently published a list from the Guinness Book of Records where they talk about the legendary pitcher Babe Ruth and Leonardo da Vinci, however, they also dedicated a section to Master Bruce Lee. No doubt many publications and books have cited him and will continue to do so since he is like the Picasso of Martial Arts. The magazine says: The karate actor Bruce Lee was so fast that in his films they had to shoot some of his movements in slow motion so that they could be seen. They said that he flew like a bird and that with one quick strike of his fist he could send his adversary flying. A kime punch. No doubt.

Nevertheless the superman, our superhero, had his limitations. In his own words Master Bruce Lee told us what his physical limitations were so that we would look at him with other eyes and not as a man born on the planet “Krypton”, but as a Lee of flesh and blood. One morning when he was having breakfast with his friend and disciple Joe Hyams the conversation came up about the body’s limitations. From Hyams point of view Bruce Lee had been born with a natural ability for the Martial Arts and was a kind of perfect specimen. However, Bruce laughed at this. “I am going to tell you something that very few people know, confessed Bruce, I became a martial artist despite my limitations. You may not have noticed but my right leg is a little more than 2 centimeters shorter than my left leg. This defect is what made me find the best posture for me, that is to say with my left leg a little forward. Then I discovered that because my right leg is shorter I have an advantage with some kicks since an unequal step gave me a bigger impetus. Furthermore I use contact lenses because I am shortsighted and have been since I was a young child which means that before I was using lenses I had a hard time seeing my opponent if he wasn’t near. In the beginning I began to study WingChun because this is an ideal technique for hand to hand combat. I accepted my limitations for what they were and made the best of them. Instead of trying to do everything well, what you have to do is perfect the things you can do, that’s the secret Dear Master Bruce Lee, this humble text is dedicated to your memory, to you who are one of the greatest martial artists of all time and who are still an inspiration for all martial artists. Your example serves as testimony to all those who think that the Martial Arts are only for the physically perfect. I am sure that you are now with God, in Glory. So be it and Amen.

Kids & M.A. Children as Martial Artists The Role of Parents and Teachers One of the best legacies that a parent can leave his child is the seed of an interest in doing Martial Arts. The Latin verb EDUCARE means to get the best out of each person but this can often mean that we project our own frustrations or dreams onto these small receivers of our attention. They are small and impressionable but they must keep far away from the reach of our own personal desires. They have to find their own path and it is our job to help them achieve this in a positive way. A good teacher should be generous and exhibit a comprehensive attitude towards his own limitations, be fair, with large amounts of fun. Children learn at play. Perhaps because their numbers are decreasing in most first world countries these little people have become the rulers of the world, however as adults we are still making the same mistakes as our parents did with us. We are often unaware that we are doing so, or in complete opposition to it, but we do it just as negatively as it was done to us. Being conscious of this will help us break the negative spiral of pain that we may have suffered. The writer of this article points out some essential factors to be considered by parents and teachers with regard to stimulating the maximum development of young people. We cannot reflect enough about this. We should not forget that large doses of love should always be present and nothing can be a substitute for intelligence and a search for the correct focus point. Let’s take care of them; they are the future!

Kids & M.A. Some Considerations on Training with Children and Young People. A Motivating Role for Parents Parents can play important and helpful roles in the development of the sports preparation of their children, but they can also inhibit their progress, as we are about to see. Parents who are aware that activity is the fundamental basis for their child’s development can facilitate his introduction to the sport and then continue to show interest in his progress. They will often help him financially as well as morally in an attempt to motivate him, but always without too much pressure as this can have negative consequences as we will now see. Unfortunately there are a significant number of parents who have a negative influence on their children’s sports development because of their exaggerated approach to the activity. Those parents tend to express

an over-protective attitude towards their children and they over organize activities without letting the children have any independence. These children are often obliged to train and compete against their will. It seems that because the parents invest time and sometimes money in their children, they expect them to be successful, using all kinds of means to achieve their end, (some people even say that there are parents amongst us who will not think twice about doping their children) most often for their own benefit. Many of these parents will also put pressure on the instructors to push the children harder so that they get better results more quickly. Even though there are parents who behave the way we have described here, negatively influencing the sports development of their children, this does not invalidate the fact that they can be the primary motivating force in their children’s determination and effort in sport. What is needed here is a wake-up call to less well-informed parents that excess parental pressure on children can be quite harmful.

Kids & M.A. The Instructor’s Role The instructor or trainer is the unifying element between the child and the sport. His role is a fundamental one throughout the entire development process. His pedagogic responsibilities in this process acquire even greater meaning than the significance of the technicalmotor training and in fact we know that if mistakes are made in the first phases of training, then these errors will never be completely corrected. Specifically speaking, this means that: - Particular attention should be paid to the development of the base forms of the technical elements of the sports movements. This requires time and patience and the popular saying: “less haste more speed” is perfectly applicable here; - The contents of the training should match the need and interests of the children and the young people; - Skills learnt under pressure, threat or fear never reach a stable point and there will always be a certain insecurity; - Trainers of children and young people have a great responsibility not only in the area of sports, but also in a social and pedagogic sense; - The consequences of these responsibilities are: - A Training Theory for Children and Young People is needed that on the one hand, takes into consideration the development of performance according to inherent conditioning factors, and on the other hand the needs and interests of the children. - Training with children and young people presupposes a certain effort on their part. This effort should never be obtained by coercion but rather by conviction. - Acquisition time varies from one individual to another and the contents of the training should therefore be designed around the learning capacity of each individual - In order for a child’s performance to develop and evolve, the amount of training should be increased slowly but progressively. - 2 to 3 training units of training per week is enough for children. - Since the trainer is responsible for the whole person development of his trainees, he should be attentive to their extra-sport training and if he feels it to be appropriate he should be involved in it. - A trainer who believes in step-by-step training cannot be too eager for success. In order to be qualified to fulfill the responsibilities, a trainer of children has to have specific qualifications and preparation. As I said before, in our countries I think that most of the people who are involved in the process of training our children do not have the appropriate preparation and are not qualified to do the tasks required. When is this preparation going to take place? How many more reasons do they need to have to see that this preparation is not only necessary but also urgent? Why do they keep putting obstacles in the way of those projects that for better or for worse focus on this preparation? Who does

“The instructor or trainer is the unifying element between the child and the sport. His role is a fundamental one throughout the entire development process. ”

“Particular attention should be paid to the development of the base forms of the technical elements of the sports movements. This requires time and patience and the popular saying: “less haste more speed” is perfectly applicable here;”

“The contents of the training should match the need and interests of the children and the young people”

Kids & M.A. this situation benefit? Clearly it does not benefit our children and young people, nor does it benefit the sport.

Pleasure as an important element of Training One of the suppositions of sports training with children is the pleasure that they should feel when they are doing it. For this reason it should be interesting. It is clear that if a child starts his training with the conviction that it is going to be boring, he will not apply himself enthusiastically and this will have negative consequences on his performance. Pleasure in training develops if it is done in groups and if there is good understanding among the members. Pleasure and performance are not mutually exclusive contradictory factors, they both add to personal success and they both express the result of learning. Performance is cognitive and externally measurable, and pleasure is affective and internal.

Conclusion Training with children and young people is important and it prepares them to achieve a high level of performance in high competition, but it is not preparation for high competition. "If we consider that high competition at an adult age is a valuable cultural factor, then when we are infants and young people we should begin to prepare ourselves for the long road that we have to take to reach it. Dealing with the problems inherent in training with children and young people as expressed here, is a complex issue and a solution is still far away. Because we are conscious of this and of the importance that the matter has in the evolution of sports in our countries we will return to this topic at another opportunity.

“One of the suppositions of sports training with children is the pleasure that they should feel when they are doing it. For this reason it should be interesting.

Plato’s Cave Imagine you are a prisoner in a dark cave. You were born a prisoner and the cave is all that you know. You and your fellow prisoners are chained together so that you always face a great wall. Behind you, and unseen by you, stand people holding puppet cutouts and placards of animate and inanimate objects. Behind these people is a large fire. The light of the fire causes the puppets to cast shadows onto the wall, the other prisoners’ faces and onto you. You and your fellow prisoners assume that the shadows are real things. The shadows are all that you have ever known, so it is your reality. All the prisoners will live and die without ever knowing anything beyond the shadow reality. If you were liberated and could see behind you, what would your reaction be? Shock? Disbelief? Anger? Perhaps the fire itself would hurt your eyes, unaccustomed as they are to light. Try to convince your fellow prisoners that the world that they know is but a mere shadow of the real world. They will laugh at you. Or, if you upset them too greatly, they will persecute you. They cannot accept what you say because, unlike you, they have never experienced it. As your eyes adjust to the fire, you might mistake it for the source of all light. For you, the remainder of the cave becomes your world and your reality. It would only be clear to those who actually escape the cave itself that there is a greater reality. The shadow images are poor substitutes for real objects just as the cave and its fire are inferior versions of the sun and the true world. This Allegory of the Cave appears in Book VII of Plato’s work: The Republic. What value does this ancient Greek philosopher hold for today’s martial artist? A great deal, I believe. Remember, tradition has it that Ta Mo (also known as Bodhidarma) sat in meditation facing a cave wall for nine years. He emerged to introduce Zen to the monks at the Shaolin Temple and to become the patriarch of all Chinese Martial Arts. His experience parallels that of Plato’s allegory.

“Some martial artists devote considerable time and effort to their art and in spite of diligent practice, they have the sense that there is something missing.

Shadow vs. Reality Many martial artists are still locked in place, facing the wall. They mistake the techniques they practice for the real thing. They do hundreds upon hundreds of repetitions of kicks, punches, blocks, and katas (forms) and they practice pre-arranged and free-style sparring. All they know is what they have been taught or shown by their teachers. They and their teachers are absorbed in the physical side of things and they know little of the spiritual or psychological aspects of their art. In most cases their teachers believe in the same shadow reality. The student is obviously limited if his teacher shares the same incomplete view of Martial Arts. In Okinawa and Japan, a legitimate martial artist below the rank of godan (fifth degree black belt) would not even think of teaching others, much less open his own dojo (school). And the idea of starting his own "style" of Martial Art would be considered ridiculous and beyond contempt. Not so in the west. All too often once a student is promoted to shodan (first degree black belt) he believes himself capable of teaching others. You frequently find someone in his early twenties setting himself up as "chief instructor" of his own school and by the time he’s thirty he might even have devised his own "new" Martial Art and designated himself to be a "grand master". These fakes and phonies are often as guilty of fooling themselves as they are of attempting to fool the public. They might actually begin to believe that they have somehow become true martial arts masters. In truth, they are still facing the wall. They are still confusing shadow for reality. They are being fooled, they are fooling themselves and others, and sadly, they are happy to be fooled.

“I have been involved in the martial arts for over thirty-five years. I admit that I have not yet escaped from the cave. I have not yet had the experience of being blinded by the brilliance of the sun.

ZANSHIN

Break Through Some martial artists devote considerable time and effort to their art and in spite of diligent practice, they have the sense that there is something missing. They are not satisfied with dealing in shadows. For them, the shadows are the physical manifestations of their martial arts and they hunger for the psychological and spiritual aspects of the arts, seeking out the higher purposes of training. Their recognition of the more esoteric aspects of the art liberates them from their bondage to the physical. They now begin to see the physical as mere shadows of the larger reality and they begin to study the real aspects, rather than the reflection of those aspects. At this point in his study, the idea of rank becomes much less important to the student and the realization that there is more than the shadow world humbles the martial artist. The ego is diminished. The puppet cutouts and the fire attract his attention. He learns to separate and then blend the physical and the mental and he has by this time spent more years of his life practicing than not practicing a martial art. At this point the martial artist has several choices. He must decide what he will do. Does he try to educate those still facing the wall? Will he persist in trying to free those who do not want to be freed? Will he yield to frustration and withdraw from the other prisoners or will he perhaps pick up a placard and contribute to the shadow world, helping to perpetuate ignorance in others? If he chooses to hold a placard, does he secretly hope someone will turn around? Or does he gloat in self-satisfaction at his superiority over them?

Self-Evaluation Where are you in your journey of training? If you think you have reached your destination, you are still facing the wall. If you believe no one is your superior then you are facing the wall. If no one can teach you anything new or better, you are still confusing shadows for reality. If you boast about your belt rank, the size of your school, or the number of your victories, you are sadly still a prisoner. You have yet to turn around to see the light of the fire.

“Many martial artists are still locked in place, facing the wall. They mistake the techniques they practice for the real thing. They do hundreds upon hundreds of repetitions of kicks, punches, blocks, and katas (forms) and they practice prearranged and free-style sparring. All they know is what they have been taught or shown by their teachers.

If on the other hand you suspect that martial arts can transcend physical techniques, you have turned away from the wall. If you recognize healing, personal growth, and service to others as ultimate goals, then congratulations on your release from bondage. If you know that no matter how good you are, no matter how strong, fast or agile you are, that you too will die one day then you are dealing with reality not shadows. As the enlightened Buddha observed, "It is all a matter of time, time defeats everything and every one". When you believe – truly believe – in your own mortality, you are free, free to live each day to the fullest, to not waste time, to seize opportunities to learn and grow.

Outside the Cave I have been involved in the martial arts for over thirty-five years. I admit that I have not yet escaped from the cave. I have not yet had the experience of being blinded by the brilliance of the sun. My eyes have, however, become accustomed to the fire in the cave. I have been blessed in meeting true masters who have left the cave and who have shown me remarkable things that go beyond what traditional science can explain. They have usually done so with the understanding that I will not reveal their skills or name them for they have long since gone beyond the need for recognition or ego gratification. They only want to practice their art in peace, caring little for fortune or fame. It is through these revered men and women that I know a little bit about what is outside the cave and it has served to inspire me to keep training and traveling along the path of the martial arts. Hopefully, it will so encourage you. About The Author: Dr. Thomas J. Nardi, is a psychologist and university professor with more than thirty years experience in the martial and healing arts. He holds black belts in Wei Kuen Do, Goju Ryu, Modern Escrima, and Jalmaani Kuntao Silat. He lives in New York, USA.

“If you recognize healing, personal growth, and service to others as ultimate goals, then congratulations on your release from bondage.

In this DVD, G.M. Larry Tatum (10th Dan) develops techniques of the Kenpo program at the highest level. Particularly, some of his “favorites” like Flashing Mace, Parting Wings, Entwined Lance… Masterfully executed and based on the experience of the movement, G.M. Tatum incorporates his innovative teachings in these techniques that will help you add and complement your training in the Kenpo system. Besides, they provide the individual with the best choice for selfdefense, based on the logical and practical thinking, and place him in the path of understanding the art of Kenpo. These are the self-defense and fighting systems of the modern times we live in. They are designed so that the practitioner gets all the benefits that training these techniques can provide. This DVD has the support of Master Adolfo Luelmo (9th Dan), who goes on with a series of techniques performed in a smooth and strong way, for situations of extreme aggression, in which can be appreciated different states of the movement, in a logical and effective way. As a conclusion, Master Camacho Assisi (8th Dan), displays a technique that combines the strength of the arms and his expertise with legs.

STRANGLEHOLDS IV FIRST AIDS IN STRANGLEHOLDS If after being caught in a stranglehold a competitor tries to the maximum to resist, to avoid losing the combat, and he realizes that he losing his senses, caused by convulsions‌and he does not recuperate immediately, the first thing that should be done is let go of the pressure, and apply reanimation techniques to make sure maximum physical and physiological stability is brought back to the competitor.

Kaisendo

If they are vomiting, place the athlete sideways, and try remove/get rid of the vomit. If they continue in a state of unconsciousness, apply an oxygen mask, while waiting for medical attention. • To avoid all risks, the competitors should be instructed in the applications of strangleholds, done by an expert, an instructor, or a Master. • They should be familiar with the knowledge on the physiology of strangleholds, and know what produces that state of unconsciousness. • Immediately recognize the state of unconsciousness, try to immediately reanimate, applying artificial reanimation methods. A stranglehold that is maintained, which produce blockage in the senses, is caused by a deep brain anemia, or a reflect action shock initiated in the receiving organs in the middle of the carotid, produced by pressure on: • Normal carotid artery. • The occipital artery. • The jugular vein. The reddish color on the face is produced by the original disorders of the pressure on the carotid and jugular veins. • The flow of the blood to the face is decreased as has been demonstrated by the ultra sound and laser. The main rate is 89, 4% in the lowest point in six seconds, after freeing, it returns to normality at 13,7 seconds. • Oxygen saturation decreases in the blood plasma, in the spiral of the ear, using an ear oxygen meter. It goes down from 95 to 86%, and searches for the minimum of 82% in 2 to 4 seconds. After recovering the senses, it returns to 90 to 92%, 60% saturation of the oxygen in the brain produce the unconsciousness. • Tachycardia (abnormal heartbeat), hypertension, and "midriasis" (dilatation of the pupils) are caused by the stimulation of sympathetic nervous system. The systemic pressure goes up 30 to 40 mm of Hg. (Mercury). After it goes up, the blood pressure returns to a normal state after 3 or 4 minutes.

Kaisendo

• In some cases the slow heart beat or hypertension occurs, in other cases abnormal heart beat, and hypertension depending on the sensitivity in the carotid, there where the pressure was applied. • The heart "volume" goes down, but is recovered in 10 seconds when it recuperates. • The periphery blood vessels are also involved: dilatation of the muscle vessels and contraction of the dermis vessels. • During the shock, there is the lack of senses, plus with slow cardiac rhythm and hypertension dilatation of the muscle vessels. • The strangling action is a stress factor of the circulatory system, and the "hyper-physio-coadrencortical": • Blood "volume" decreases and the proteins in the blood increase caused by the increased permeability of the blood vessels. This is similar to the state of unconsciousness that continues in a shock produced by an electrical discharge. There is not any change in the rates of the blood cell and plasma or in the albumin globin. • There is a temporal increase of the eosinophile, after recuperating and raising, gradual increase in number after four hours. • The "ketosteroids" in the urine, 2 hours after recuperation the quantity is much more increased, then it gradually goes down the last 6 to 8 hours. • In the electroencephalogram (EEG), the convulsions that appear in the state of unconsciousness are very similar to those produced by epilepsy. There are not any permanent secondary effects after the use to the prolonged stranglehold. What is much more dangerous is a Knock Out, in Boxing.

Kaisendo

Conclusions The effects of "sustained" stranglehold on the carotid artery have been studied extensively. Nevertheless, when used by police forces they have caused some deaths, we are referring to reports given in Los Angeles, CALIFORNIA. The police-training department places emphasis that there should be control when applying an arresting technique on a suspect who shows tough resistance by applying a prolonged stranglehold. This can be done with the arms, the police club/stick or with the tonfa without the need of affecting their senses. Even though the agents are trained, they have great difficulty controlling an individual who presents a lot of resistance. Some of them are under the influence of drugs, for example, heroin and morphine; alcohol and cocaine‌ These individuals can have a high resistance to pain, which make the detention tough, being under the effects of these drugs. In other words, in Judo, Ju Jutsu, and Kaisendo, practitioners are taught to correctly apply the strangleholds, therefore obtaining great ability and skill when they have to apply them, thus avoiding possible dangerous consequences. They

know when an opponent´s conscious is going to be affected; they relax the pressure on the neck, or on the contrary they abandon (Maita), before they are surprised by the unconscious state. Officials, referees, judges, trainers, know the moment in which athletes are going to become unconscious. The police agents, who have to use strangleholds to arrest violent suspects or individuals, should be well trained and supervised by qualified instructors. This would lead to fewer errors and abuses if the stranglehold techniques were correctly applied, then there would be fewer fatalities. The number of misfortunes/fatalities would decrease if they applied they following procedures: 1. Strangleholds should be taught and supervised by qualified instructors. • They should be familiar with the structure of the neck and where pressure should be applied on the carotid triangle. • Know/learn the physiology of strangleholds, which is only a little pressure that is needed to bring on unconsciousness. • Immediate recognition of the state of unconsciousness to relax the pressure. • Learn methods of the art of reanimation (Kappo), or whatever other method to reanimate the individual. • Prevent possible vomiting, placing the person on the side, never face down. Keep a close eye on the person, a call medical service as soon as possible. 2. Review the police training manuals to emphasize these procedures. There are principles and procedures that can only be taught by an instructor who is highly qualified in Judo, Ju Jutsu or Kaisendo.

In other words, in Judo, Ju Jutsu, and Kaisendo, practitioners are taught to correctly apply the strangleholds, therefore obtaining great ability and skill when they have to apply them, thus avoiding possible dangerous consequences. They know when an opponent´s conscious is going to be affected; they relax the pressure on the neck, or on the contrary they abandon (Maita), before they are surprised by the unconscious state.

The art of Ilustrisimo is a truly refined sword art system. It is efficient, direct and functional. It is full of subtle movements, strategic positioning and superior timing. It can appear simple, but when attempted, becomes complex. But the true beauty dwell in it's effectiveness and functionality. The Kali Ilustrisimo Laban Laro drills were put together by members of Punong Guro Edgar Sulite and Master Christopher Ricketts Los Angeles and Las Vegas groups also known as Kapisanang Mandirigma. Laban Laro means to "play" or "simulate" fighting. This DVD goes over a number of techniques from the Art of Grandmaster Ilustrisimo and put into combative drills by Kapisanang Mandirigma. They were put together as an additional tool to help their own students refine, analyze and tighten their movements. Bust most of all, make them think and take them out of their comfort zone. The previous DVDs from Guro Dino Flores dealt with more range transition, intensity, impact, directness, instinct and its relationship to real time sparring. This DVD goes more into medium range - positioning, flow, analysis and timing. All are important to getting a deeper understanding of the art.

In this new DVD of Vovinam, Patrick Levet has wanted to show the facets of the use and handling of the Vietnamese Stick. Although little known, the Vietnamese long stick is, without a doubt, the most important weapon among all the weapons of the traditional Martial Arts of Vietnam. The Vovinam school, in its official program, only proposes the Stick Form (Tu Tuong Con Phap) and the counterattacks of stick vs. stick (Phan The Con), without explaining the intermediate movements. But the Vietnamese stick goes far beyond these two facets and Master Levet offers us 2 detailed DVDs on all the applications of the numerous intermediate movements of the Stick Quyen. This first volume includes a series of specific stick warming up and bodybuilding exercises, the guard, fundamental principles, stylistic handling of the weapon, defense against disarmament, blocking and dodging, displacements, as well as combat techniques. An original work that shows for the first time the Vietnamese stick in a complete and exhaustive way.
