Master Rondy Mckee is one of the most distinguished and renowned female martial artists ever, with over 22 years leading the "White Tiger Taekwondo and Martial Arts", known to be the largest MA school in the entire world, and through which have passed more than 12,000 students. She is also a 7th Level Black Belt and a certified judge by the Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Federation, apart from Hapkido 6th Dan, Certified Instructor in Wing Chun by "Sifu" Samuel Kwok, Yoga and Fitness among many other disciplines. In this very special work, she approaches the rethinking of the applications of the 1 to 8 TaeGeuk forms, through the Martial Science, developed by the Dragon Society International Martial Arts Science, with the assistance of her mentor, Wayne Adams. Martial science is the study of armed and unarmed combat, a deep understanding of all the fighting facets, on the basis of the study of the ancient Chinese Traditional Medicine in terms of anatomy, pressure points and physiology. In the second part of this DVD, and also as Master of Marketing, Master Rondy presents a seminar on the business of teaching Martial Arts, focused on the keys to success in the organization of summer activities in Martial Arts schools.

"In summer, the hands of the wind move invisible threads in the air which bring together waves, hairs and thoughts." Fabrizio Caramagna

“Time and again, the hum of the cicadas crossed tirelessly the humid summer air, like a needle penetrates a thick cotton fabric.” Yukio Mishima

Summers always fly... winters walk! "Charlie Brown", Charles M. Schulz

every year, summer has made its appearance once again, faithful to its compulsory appointment. Stacked in our endeavors, saturated of our daily obligations, exhausted by the routines, we can finally open a parenthesis anticipating, savoring, recalling the fond memories of previous summer holidays, and willing that this reencounter with ourselves brings us peace, rest and reload. The year does not end in December, but, just as the academic year... it finishes with the summer holidays! And that paradox of paradoxes is the most important at the annual scale, because there's nothing like the "dolce far niente" so as to do the most important thing: to live. To live, yes! To live in its broadest extension; to slide softly lulled by those long days, where, as Gershwin's "Summertime" tells us: "the living is easy..." It's in the useless where the important dwells; in the small where the great hides; in the superfluous where we find the essential. The summertime reminds us of the futility of our efforts; it focuses on the permanent thing, the returning, sometimes passionate, sometimes drowsy, of re-merging ourselves with the essential. Who are we? Are our endeavors worth it what they cost? The summer, silently, raises questions and whispers answers to us, and it always does it with that maternal lullaby of eternal sunsets, warm illuminated nights, sea or mountain breezes, which return color to our cheeks and candor to our troubled hearts. Light defeats the darkness in the winter solstice, but that ephemeris is just a promise of end of cycle; that victory is only tasted in the summer, when, tradition of traditions, along the entire Mediterranean cost, we light the bonfires at San Juan's night to burn all the old and celebrate with frenzy the rebirth of the light in our lives as we get ready to receive the new. In the summer, where the young enjoys stunningly, the old man purrs in his "siestas", long and renovating pauses, real naps! ("a siesta of pajamas and potty", as Don Camilo Jose Cela used to say), sheltered in the oldest remedy of man, the sleep, we paradoxically recompose our body, emotion and mind, just when more light reaches us.

A

“Loaded fruit-bearing trees. Golden wheat fields ... Smoked crystals. Burnt rockroses... Shady drought, east wind... A complete palette: Summer.” Manuel Machado

Eternal sunrises and intense heat, an occasional suffocation that the wise entertains and distracts in refreshing ablutions, now in the sea, now in the river, where our bodies and spirit are cleansed by merging with the elemental, and in that return to the maternal womb, we float (those who can ... how lucky!) letting ourselves go with the intermittent sound of the waves, or to the whisper of the fresh waters breaking among the rocks The summer strips us of our clothes letting emerge our bodies and their circumstances, which, constrained and immersed in those masks that are the garments, find again their place in our minds. They were there, in fact, they've always been there, but we didn't see it! Oh yeah! Muffin tops that we preferred to ignore, bony beaks that bear witness to the "shortage of flesh" of some... and that little mole there? I didn't have it before! How pale we are! This bikini doesn't fit me any longer! I 've got to quit beer at once…! How beautiful is to get rid of that ballast and let emerge our body, this gift that takes us here and there and that demands attention as never before. At last we see ourselves as we are, leaving behind other symbols, without makeups or deceptions, evenly matched in the essential, deprived from badges that the Sun and the heat require reducing to its simplest form. Between Rubens and anorexia, beaches and pools belie the perfection of Photoshop and bring us over to the credible, to the human, which is the really divine thing. Beauty then escapes in torrents, because it exists more in the eye that looks than in the object of appreciation. And of course, everything is beautiful in the summer, because we, renewing ourselves in our cycle, take that indispensable distance to once again recognize the difference between the essential and the fundamental. In the serene clarity that this brings to us, problems fade away, and while everything equalizes in our lives, we take another turn in bed … No! Today we won't have to get up early either. Give summer a chance, embrace ataraxia, join its proposal of lethargy, get lost to find yourself; may you then wake up with that first ray of sunlight, happy and satisfied of simply being alive. Thanks summer!

“It's in the useless where the important dwells; in the small where the great hides; in the superfluous where we find the essential. The summertime reminds us of the futility of our efforts; it focuses on the permanent thing, the returning, sometimes passionate, sometimes drowsy, of re-merging ourselves with the essential.

“The Jaguar of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu” Mestre Sylvio Behring Text & photos: Don Warrener

Considered one of the young guns of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Mestre Behring is undoubtedly the “Jaguar of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu”. His technique is very fast and clean. Once your caught by him there is no getting away its over as he has so many counters for every type of possible escape it is futile to even consider escaping like a Jaguar he is strong powerful and experienced. His innovative Progressive System of teaching BJJ is amazing and so easy to follow that anyone can learn the moves and how to apply them either in the street or in competition or even as a complementary system to your present martial arts your teaching.

orn into one of Brazil’s first families of Jiu Jitsu his father was one of the original students of Master Helio Gracie. In fact you can see his father in Master Gracie’s early books, as he is the uke or partner in all the photos. His father never wanted to teach professionally until 1992 when he took over his second son’s school in Sao Paolo. Sylvio’s brother Marcelo was one of the most talented and gifted fighters in Gracie jiu Jitsu ever. But his father not being interested in his own ego he took his son to

many other teachers including Master João Alberto and Master Rickson Gracie to lear n more details and the fine points of Jiu Jitsu. In 1980 he became a student of Master Alvaro who he considers his Master or Sensei. Later in 1987 he became his partner in running the school as his teaching skills were so high along with his technical knowledge he was a natural teacher. Sylvio started his training in 1966 at the age of 4 but even before that he was rolling around with his father but it was in 1966 he put on his first Jiu Jitsu gi and started his formal training in the art that has taken the world by a storm. We asked “The Jaguar” what the main difference is between Japanese Jiu Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. “They are both the same in many ways the techniques are the same and the goal is submission in both arts but where we differ is in the way we train. Our training is a little more realistic when it comes to the self-defense part. Our ground fighting is very good and very strong.”

“His technique is very fast and clean. Once your caught by him there is no getting away its over as he has so many counters for every type of possible escape it is futile to even consider escaping like a Jaguar he is strong powerful and experienced

Then we asked what is the difference between Gracie Jiu Jitsu and your Progressive jiu Jitsu? “Well there is nothing new in my system except the way in which I teach it. I found that there is a way of teaching jiu jitsu that I lear nt from my master that is logical and progressive from one technique to another but it has all the same techniques of Gracie Jiu Jitsu its just in the way it is taught to the students that is different.” We then went to meet Hickson Gracie who is one of the people that taught Sylvio and it was like old home week for them as Sylvio stood beside Master Hickson at the beginning of the class and it was very evident the mutual admiration they had for each other at Master Hickson’s seminar.

“Born into one of Brazil’s first families of Jiu Jitsu his father was one of the original students of Master Helio Gracie.”

The one thing that became quite clear as we developed our friendship especially when I was in Brazil and he took me to many of his branch locations one on an island and it felt like a scene out of “Enter The Dragon” as we travelled by boat to an island where he taught and then the next day we went to a Favela dojo where there were 150 students waiting to train with him. When we arrived at the location in one of the most dangerous parts of Rio de Janeiro the students ran to him at least 50 or 60 as if he was the savior and they all had these amazing beautiful smiles on their faces that lit up the school as all the parents watched.

During the class not one or two but four juniors collapsed not from the heat or hard training but from the lack of food because as Sylvio explained he does not charge these students because they have nothing and to many their most valuable possession is not their worn out pants or shirt but their hand me down Jiu Jitsu uniforms they wore. The matt’s they practiced on did not fit together and were all kinds of colors and sizes anything at all was used to fall on.

It was an eye opener for me for sure as at the end it became apparent what the kids really came for as he brought out food simple but it was food to feed them who trained. Wow is all I could say Wow. This was the first time I ever seen anything like this and I immediately had deep respect for this man that I have dubbed the “Jaguar of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu” Mestre Sylvio Behring a mans man and martial artists, martial artist a quality human being that I am proud to call my friend and martial arts brother.

“Well there is nothing new in my system except the way in which I teach it. I found that there is a way of teaching jiu jitsu that I learnt from my master that is logical and progressive from one technique to another but it has all the same techniques of Gracie Jiu Jitsu its just in the way it is taught to the students that is different.”

Jeet Kune Do Intelligent, perceptive, sharp… Burton Richardson is an inveterate seeker, in the purest style in which Bruce Lee was, a man Bur ton gr eatly admir ed. Nothing is sufficient, everything can and must be rethought, tested, felt, and demonstrated. Burton has been many years casting light on the thousand and one questions of combat in various publications around the world and from some months ago, exclusively in this magazine. Today, furthermore, he adds to his repertoire a new project with DVD included that will leave much to talk about. The techniques of mixed Martial Arts (MMA) have added a new and rich focus to the modern concepts of combat, but it is sure that that which began as fights without rules, has been transforming day by day in such a way that its original sense has deteriorated and given way to something else, without a doubt stimulating and different, but definitely distancing itself more and more from hardcore combat: that of the street. In fact, many techniques that are trained today in the best gymnasiums around the world would be a one-way ticket to hell if practiced in a real fight. Burton has “taken the bull by the horns” and, taking advantage of all that is positive fr om the MMA revolution, which is a lot, he puts it in appropriate context so that it becomes equally effective outside the octagon. This DVD instructs us on all of this and more, as does his article. Don’t miss it! Alfredo Tucci qÉñíW _ìêíçå=oáÅÜ~êÇëçå mÜçíçëW www.budointernational.com

MMA STYLE TRAINING FOR THE STREET

Jeet Kune Do

here is no doubt about it. The well-trained, modern, No Holds Barred (NHB) or Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) athlete is a fighting machine. He or she can fight very well in the kickboxing, clinch, and ground ranges. Athletes in the sport of MMA train to fight skilled opponents through the use of striking, throwing, and submission holds. Rules prohibiting headbutts, eye strikes, groin attacks, biting, and other tactics are in place for the safety of the participants, but other than these constraints, the fights are real as they get. Competitors prepare for the sporting event through rigorous training. Sparring against uncooperative opponents is the main method of preparation, along with massive conditioning. Without sparring in all of the ranges, the fighters would be lost when matched against a skillful opponent. Bottom line: the training methods work. It is from my extensive training in MMA and full contact stick-fighting that I was able to distill the JKDU philosophy of training into one phrase. That phrase is: "If you want to learn how to fight you have to practice fighting against someone who is fighting back!" This is what the MMA athlete does daily. Now, what happens if such an athlete, who trains within the rules of the sport, has to take on an aggressive street attacker outside of the ring or cage where there are no referees?

T

Jeet Kune Do In the great majority of incidents, the trained fighter is going to dominate the situation. (An ambush from behind is another story, but no type of training will help you there.) Why? Because all fights take place in the kickboxing, clinch, or ground ranges, and often within all of the aforementioned distances. Someone trained in all of these ranges will generally prevail over an adversary who can only bring aggression to the fight, even without the use of "street" tactics. On the other side of the equation, you have probably heard of many instances where traditional martial artists who spend most of their time practicing forms and static technique sequences, along with limited sparring, have been overwhelmed in a selfdefense situation. Even though the traditional martial artist had eye strikes and groin attacks in his arsenal, he wasn't actually able to apply his training when real resistance came crashing down on him. So if the MMA fighter fares much better than the traditional martial artist in a real fight, we can come to a logical conclusion. If a main goal of your training is to develop usable self-defense skills, you should then train in the sport of MMA. This is where we at JKD Unlimited have a different point of view. The reason MMA fighters can fight well is because of the training methodology of practicing against a resisting partner in all of the ranges. This is the key to skill development. Knowing the techniques is not enough. You must develop the skills necessary to be able to apply your techniques against someone who does not want you to succeed. Is a real attacker going to resist you? Of course he will. The true art of self-defense lies in your ability to overcome

“Now, what happens if such an athlete, who trains within the rules of the sport, has to take on an aggressive street attacker outside of the ring or cage where there are no referees?

Jeet Kune Do

that resistance, not just in memorizing a litany of deadly techniques. You can learn the punches and defenses of boxing rather quickly, but just because you can demonstrate them doesn't mean that you are ready to fight the champ. You have to learn the techniques, and then practice them in the proper environment to prepare yourself for combat. Once you know how to train correctly, you must direct that training to address the "rules" of the event you are training for. In MMA, different fighting organizations have different rules. Some fights allow head-butts, kicking a downed fighter in the head, and elbow strikes. These tactics are illegal in other organizations. Fighters adjust their training to allow for the rules. As the rules change, the training and tactics change. If you are primarily interested in the selfdefense aspects of the Martial Arts, then I believe that you should train for the "rules" of the street. As we all know, there is only one rule, and that is: "There are no rules." Some will say that this is all nonsense, and that your best bet is to just train as an MMA fighter would train. You are probably never going to get attacked on the street anyway. If you do get attacked, the theory is that you can spontaneously adjust to that environment and add in the foul tactics. That theory needs to be examined. The entire principle of training is to create habits within our bodies so that we will not have to think about what we are doing in a stressful situation. We want our bodies to be able to automatically react in a

Jeet Kune Do

positive and safe manner when under the stress of combat. Let's go back to that theory that if you are in a street fight you can spontaneously adjust to the lack of rules. My question is this: If you don't train to protect your groin, what would prompt you to think about doing that in a real fight? Answer: A solid groin hit! Do you want to wait until you are kicked in the groin to adjust your clinch stance? Do you want to wait to start protecting your eyes until after you have been gouged? No. If we are talking self-defense, this attitude of training for the sport then making an instantaneous adjustment in the midst of a street attack is dangerously backwards. In JKD Unlimited we do the following: We train primarily for the street environment, and then make adjustments in the training for those who want to enter competitions.

We play in all the ranges against a resisting partner, just as we do in MMA sport training, but we always have the street tactics included as we do our training. The idea of training one way, then making a spontaneous adjustment to a mode that you don't train is not practical. It would be like training solely in submission grappling when you are preparing to enter an MMA competition. With this philosophy, you would say, "I am going to work on my takedowns, guard passes, and submissions without any strikes allowed. Then when I get in the match, I will just adjust to the striking." We all know that this does not work. You have to train for the parameters of the event. You don't only train collegiate wrestling techniques if you are going into a submission wrestling match. You wouldn't just train boxing if you are fighting in a Muay Thai kickboxing match, just as you wouldn't only train

kickboxing if you are going into MMA. When you change the rules of the event, the techniques, tactics, training methods, and structure must change to accommodate the particular rules. As effective as sport-oriented MMA is, you should go beyond MMA if you are training to be prepared for the arena of street self-defense.

Jeet Kune Do “The entire principle of training is to create habits within our bodies so that we will not have to think about what we are doing in a stressful situation

One drawback of including the street tactics is that you can't actually gouge your partner's eyes or hit him hard in the groin. But you usually don't actually try to knock out your partner in training either. A great thing about grappling is that you can apply your technique at full tilt with minimal risk of injury. MMA athletes don't go all-out with their punching and kicking in training, as there would be too many injuries. Does this mean that they don't add striking to the face at all because it isn't at full intensity? No. We strike, but with proper protection and at a safe level of intensity. In JKDU, we also add eye strikes, groin hits, and simulated bites to the training in a safe, fun manner in order to play the game at the street self-defense level.

BJJ, kickboxing, and MMA can be very effective in a street fight, but the best MMA fighters don't just train BJJ or Muay Thai or Greco Roman. They cross train specifically for the event. We cross train with MMA style training methods, but with the street environment as our first priority. This can be done by anyone of any level of physicality. We adjust the intensity of the t r a i n i n g t o s u i t t h e i n d i v i d u a l ' s c u r re n t p h y s i c a l condition and goals. It is extremely fun, healthy, and mind expanding. If you aren't planning to compete in the sporting event, but want street self-defense, I s u g g e s t t h a t y o u t r a i n p r i m a r i l y f o r t h e s t re e t environment.

Master Bruno Tombolato is chairman and founder of the Shaolin Cultural Center Spain and the SAN WEI Center of Chinese Culture in Madrid. His secular name is Shi Xing Jing - 释 行 净 -, which represents the thirty-second generation of the Shaolin Temple in Songshan, and that was bestowed on him by his Shifu, Grand Master Shi De Yang, of whom he is a direct disciple. With more than 30 years devoted to Chinese Martial Arts, in this his first DVD, Master Tombolato presents us with a series of essential techniques of Shaolin Kung Fu that will help the practitioner to obtain the mastery of fundamental Shaolin Jibengong, also essential for the development of higher level forms. For this reason, all this set of techniques must be trained by both beginners and advanced students alike. This first pedagogical work seeks to enrich the practitioner with the essence of the Shaolin art, so that he can connect with those concepts that will serve as a guide both in practice and in teaching.

You can kill me, but you will never defeat me It was an honour to take part in the Kapap Team in Italy, at the beautiful city of Venice, with Kyoshi Fabian Garcia, a former Navy Seal’s captain from Argentina, together with Shihan Pier Paolo Ibba, Shihan Altin Qoku, Sensei Antonio Piñón, from Switzerland, and the psychologist Denis Biliato, specialist in stress management. The training consisted of performing "Military Games" drills, which were made to teach students how to gather as one team. As we said for them, when you go to the school people will rarely teach you about "friendship". However, that is what we do in Kapap; we want to show what friendship and respect mean, why it is important and one of the most valuable things in life. Yet, still the majority forgets and ignores these teachings, being selfish about showing their skills instead. Showing those aspects is essential to our roles as educators, once Martial Art is also the study of life. And, therefore, as educators committed with the seriousness of our works, we cannot be seen as a “Bully School”, of people wearing martial arts’ uniform just to bully our students, neither other martial arts schools’ students.

The camp was created with the intent of answering several questions regarding Kapap Krav Maga in Avi Nardia Academy, what are the differences from other schools. We observe other schools working by overestimating speed and stresses, what we disagree. We believe speed is useless if you do not teach first the skills, just to later on add the stress, because stress without skills means you caused and failed. We differ from most Krav Maga schools because we believe sometimes “slow is fast”, in comparison to those who want to run fast before learning how to walk first. Basically, if you cannot do it slow, you cannot do it fast either. Our role as teachers is to become your best enemies, by bringing you always into the worst and most challenging situations. Of course, always protecting our students from injuries, but making sure you are building body, mind and spirit altogether. The Military Games are great personal challenge - especially for civilians. Normal civilians will have other activities, jobs, responsibilities that are different from the Navy Seals’ routines. In actual reality, most people do not hold that body conditioning, what makes for them a harder mental challenge. They have to learn that usually the body breaks first, but you can use the power of the mind and spirit to keep your body moving even in the toughest situations. We prepared the new DVD for Budo Magazine to share some ideas from our camps (some drills that are adaptable to many martial arts uses, for example in Gashuku training camps). We will soon share more variations, to include water trainings and others, but now we are happy to share these drills, anyone can do anywhere and with no costs – and it will activate your stamina, agility, power endurance, mental endurance, team work, and support the constructions of participant’s spirit, character and to understand what is real friendship, supporting the narrowing of students’ relationships to the creation of a

“family. The trainings include mental and emotional challenges, creation of trust between partners and to count on people at your side in case you need help, which - again – are aspects we are missing in our adult lives. There is also reported stress monitoring, with Denis, in how to use biofeedback and stress management to obtain better performances from students. Finally, we included testimonials from instructors about the importance of strong mind conditioning, like it happens to me sometimes by sharing fear and aggressiveness, and how fear from failure can bring us down. As the swordsmanship knowledge teaches: the fear is sharper than any sword, and if you let it inside, it will cut you heart way before the fight start. I would say we all must adapt to that: "you can kill me, but you will never defeat me". As long as I am alive, I will never give up on will of living.

Luk Dim Bun Gwan: "The Six and a Half Point Pole": 六點 半 棍 After completing the Wing Chun Kung Fu fourth form and the applications of the Wooden Dummy form, every practitioner of whatever lineage begins the study of Wing Chun "weapons". For many, this section has become something almost mysterious or secret. For the large majority of amateurs and practitioners, the WEAPONS section of the Wing Chun system is the great unknown. Its use is rather part of an almost folkloric aspect than a real application that helps improve the practice. Not many practitioners have studied in depth the Long Pole

and Double Knives forms, and that is precisely the reason why there hasn't been a great evolution thereof. It's like a "dog that bites its tail": they don't evolve because they're not practiced in depth; and they're not practiced in depth due to the enormous ignorance of the vast majority of practitioners. Some years ago I took upon myself the task of studying with a deep look, but a very open mind, these two elements of the Wing Chun Kung Fu system. I want to have a very clear line of argument in everything all that has to do with the study and training method that we use in the TAOWS Academy institution, with the aim of taking care of our Ancient Art: Tradition and Evolution hand in hand.

herefore, perhaps the first question to be asked should be: Is the long pole really a weapon or is it just a training tool? Subject to debate among several Wing Chun schools, I personally I think that both sides of this argument have a point. On the one hand, the long pole of Wing Chun is not considered exactly a weapon under our current point of view, although under the perspective of time, we must understand that, way back in the old days, and in very specific situations, it's likely that it was so. I'll try to explain all this, as well as the evolution of this element in an attend to shed some light on the matter. If I had to opt for one of the two options, I would undoubtedly support the idea that nowadays, the Long Pole is an excellent tool to supplement the practice of the advanced practitioners. Let me now try to reason out my view. We must understand that the Southern China we know today doesn't have much in common with what could be found before the beginning of the 20th century, that is, a rural China, far from the large industrial and economic potential that Canton shows us today and that has meant a radical change in the ways of life of the inhabitants of the area. For this, we must take into account the nature and historical moment in which fighting styles emerged in the area.

T

Hong Kong is obviously one of the areas where commercial exchange and navigation have shaped the very nature of its people and their ways of living. Indeed, this aspect has become a fundamental element in the life of the inhabitants from that part of the country. The perhaps most important commercial port of the world that served (and still serves nowadays) as neuralgic center of the Asian Southeast trade, generated a very large amount of maritime traffic and consequently the use of smaller vessels, that managed the unloading of large boats in the docks or even in nearby ports. As you may have noticed, I am trying to expose my reasoning within terms that bring us closer to the daily reality of people, away from all superstition or legend. The reason for this is quite simple: for years, in the world of the Southern China Martial Arts, and especially in the Wing Chun Kung Fu world, reference has always been made to the importance of the figure of the "Red Junk" (a mythical boat where in theory knowledge was exchanged among practitioners of different styles). Well, moving my reasoning away from the existence or not of the Red Junk seems fundamental to me, in order to understand in its essence, the argument I want to develop today. In my opinion, we've squandered our time discussing if the Red Junk really existed or it was just a myth, talking about whether there ever was such thing as an original Wing Chun or not, and even debating uselessly about names or dates of the historical evolution of the Wing Chun Kung Fu system, thus moving away from the very essentials: CONCEPTS and IDEAS.

Please, don't see my words as a criticism. If there's anyone in love with Chinese culture and the history of Chinese Martial Arts, including the development of the Wing Chun Kung Fu system throughout the centuries, that's me! But I feel that this type of senseless speculation doesn't improve the art at all. Quite the opposite, in fact it has generated very negative dynamics that, far from providing technical improvements, in many cases have caused the loss of perspective on interpreting reality. I therefore want in this article to focus on the search for PATTERNS or IDEAS that can serve us as guides. That is, supporting elements that help us in our practice and make us understand better why, for what, when and where, in order that these ideas be what allow us to improve our technical level and the comprehension of the style. Therefore, the first question when we're talking about the "Stick of Six and a Half Points" should be, WHAT IS IT? In my opinion, and on the basis of my research in the recent years, the Long Pole of Wing Chun was an OAR, a pole used by the inhabitants of Hong Kong that sailed near the coast, and which had several appli-

cations. The first one of them was, obviously, its use as support for: 1) Advancing in shallow areas. 2) Braking or pushing the boat when it approached others (due to the heavy traffic of this type of boats). 3) It was also used to interchange sacks, baskets, and other merchandise with other vessels without having to board them. 4) Supporting stick to dry clothes or salting food. 5) Protection device to prevent other people from getting on the boat (usually with the intent to steal). As you can see, the general use of the Long Pole was not related to Warfare or the Combat practice. If could be used, as indicated in point five, as an element of protection, but of course, had many other more everyday uses. The next question should be then, how did it become one of the "WEAPONS" of the Wing Chun Kung Fu system? Without entering into the debate about the existence or not of the Red Junk and the technical exchanges among the Martial Arts practitioners in the area, it seems logical to think that no fighting style is totally pure. In my opinion, if the "myth of the Red Junk" is of any use, it is to explain that each and every one of the styles of southern China learned and "nourished" themselves from other styles, both previous and contemporary. This dismantles the argument of those who affirm the existence of an ORIGINAL and pure Wing Chun. If there is something clear is that all the southern styles, and very especially Wing Chun, are hybrid styles. A mixture of several combat systems with the aim of being efficient. When you do a little research on the Luk Dim Bun Gwan form - 六點 半 棍 -, you are in for several "surprises": The first revelation is that there NEVER existed a Long Pole form in Wing Chun.

The second one is that almost every Yip Man's student practices the form in a different way than the others. Even among the students of the first generation there are important variations in the scheme and development of the form itself. The third and most important surprise: the most similar use (from a martial view) to what we currently see in the form is more related to Hun Gar than with any other fighting style. We can safely conclude that the works and skills we carry out with this pole are not therefore techniques exclusive to our system, but a contribution of other methods previous to Wing Chun Kung Fu, acquired in some technical exchange among Martial Arts practitioners. Some even dare to say that it was Dr. Leung Jan who, after learning the use of the Long Pole from Leung Yee Tai, definitively introduced its use in Wing Chun Kung Fu. Although I find it hard to believe something like that, because of the idiosyncrasy of the Chinese boxing practitioners of the time, actually this aspect doesn't seem to be too relevant. As I said in the beginning of the article, I wanted to get away from those "romantic" versions that try to explain elements related to the history of the style. The next question we should ask ourselves is: what does the Luk Dim Bun Gwan training provide today to a Wing Chun Kung Fu practitioner? We agree that today it would be a bit difficult to walk along the street carrying such a long stick in our hands. Therefore, we should reflect on the real importance of this practice in the Wing Chun Kung Fu system. I must admit that, for a while, I didn't pay too much attention to training with the Long Pole. But it's been a couple of years since I began to check the benefits of a methodical training of this element, and I would like to flesh out the points in which I focus my training, as well as the courses I teach on this element:

First, the Long Pole forces me to keep a control of my body through the rather complex nonetheless highly interesting knowledge of the bodily structures, that is, understanding the use of the fulcrum and the lever. The origin of the force and the objective. Second, the using of an element of a great length which isn't part of my own body, forces me to practice with a very interesting concept in Martial Arts: INTENTION. With the Long Pole I force myself to work from my center, but keeping my intention almost three meters away from it. This is a very positive and interesting element to develop certain skills (control of space, use of vision to control the environment, etc.). In the third place, the incredible physical endurance you acquire with the practice of both the form itself and the Chi Kuen exercises (Sticky Pole). The "compulsory" use of the body as a Body / Mind / Intention UNIT only has positive effects on the Wing Chun practitioner. But in addition, we must add the incredible strength that the wrist, elbow, and shoulder joints, and even those of fingers, acquire when working out the right way. All this and some other elements and conclusions to which I've reached in the last years will be conveniently explained in some of the Special Courses that we are to develop in the TAOWS University over the coming months. Martial Arts, Changes... we're all searching a path! The Way ..., this term is widely used in Martial Arts to refer to something beyond the visible, in a general way. "DO" in Japanese, "TAO" in Chinese... whatever it may be, I am one of those who think that the true path is the one that causes changes. In the constant game of life there is nobody who doesn't change, who doesn't undergo transformations. In depth, we can say that we are "making" ourselves all the time. The famous Maieutic or Method of Elenchus, which was elaborated by Socrates in the fourth century BC, works on a philosophical line in which it seeks the truth within Man. It's famous the phrase "Know yourself" ( , translit. gnรณthi seautรณn), which initiates the inner journey of Humanity, in search of the path that leads to the practice of moral virtues.

uring the "Budo Masters" event in Rome - Italy, a dear master told me about his latest news and the changes in his personal life. All of us, regardless of race, skin color, sex, also undergo constant changes in our personal lives. Anyway, I've always thought that, be that as it may, these changes should be positive. Changing for change's sake is not a phenomenon that has a line of supreme power by itself; the constructive change happens little by little, through experience. It's simple: our common mind feels spontaneously sensations that are repeated all the time: "I exist", "I exist". Then, this process that is based on our subconscious, promotes a distorted perception of the reality of our "I" or "ego". It's easy: regardless of the martial path we choose, life itself represents the verification of our own change. For masters, death and impermanence. However, although we are on a path, journey, sport ..., the reality of impermanence invades our fantasy and a world of possibilities and alterations make us change, thus altering our personal and therefore vital perspective. For the most experienced masters not only in the martial path, that independent ego that we take so much care of, and with which we identify at a hundred percent, in reality is a complete hallucination. The same thing happens with Martial Arts. Each path has a reality that needs to be observed with judgment. Although there is the inner truth of each one, the very condition generated by the path, system, sport,

D

method, etc., itself (whether true or not, since that's something relative) makes a type of fed truth be superior to any presented truth. Now this inner truth can be both good and bad. Some are mistaken in imagining that in the search for the true path, beauty and dreams are manifested in a place called paradise. Contrary to that, the truth of each one chooses a special place to emerge, so that this emerging reaches the required goal. Some people join certain schools and expect to be treated as princes, but the central objective of a school is to teach and it's considered that the pupils are there to learn. That's the point! In a real school there's no special people. There exist special attitudes that make people special. Sometimes we get the impression that people look for transcendent experiences thus believing that they are becoming enlightened. It's obvious that the man of this new millennium no longer fits into the image of the little lamb who blindly followed the concepts of the religious leaders in the past. Today's man has the need to believe in something, but his interior has become skeptical and his search for a path has been made him uncoordinated. This may be due to the fact that our daily experiences are so trivial, so banal and superficial. Everything seems to indicate that modern man may be wishing something different, "electrifying" I'd say. Krishnamurti tells us that "that extravagant idea of having a wonderful experience encloses the duality represented by the experiencer and the experience". As long as this duality continues to exist, there will be deformation; because the experimenter is the past, with all the knowledge and memories accumulated in it. Dissatisfied with current

experiences, he wants a much grander experience, he "projects" it as an idea and tries to reach that "projection": once again, duality and deformation. The search for the path only becomes real when we believe in it. When the interest has been set aside, the only search that exists is the inside, and this, doesn't depend on the path itself, it depends on the way of walking. Although technology has proved to us that the ancient is a thing of the past, the traditional schools of the sword practice and the Japanese concepts of war are surviving this frightening third millennium. In a general way, traditional Japanese arts conserve within their training concept the strengthening of the spirit, as a support tool against the battles and traps of fate. What that we have understood with this experiment is that culture strengthens people's convictions. Depending on the formation, those convictions are admitted as a pattern. With regard to the quality of the changes, in every society there are precepts that act promoting certain beliefs. It's a psychological issue with its sociological equivalence. It's a great risk for the student of any area of knowledge, to learn exclusively his perception of the world as the only reality. Although in our days many masters of traditional schools seek in modern science resources to demonstrate the genius of ancient creators; it is clear that science must be constructed with sensitivity and flexibility. "Cultural transformations can indeed be understood from an "essentialist" or "historicist" perspective. It seems to us, nevertheless, that the problem is wrong when one tries to justify an explanation based exclusively on one of its poles." (Dr. Ricardo Salas Astrain - Silva HenrĂquez Catholic University-Chile). With a different vision, given the modern technology, we can say that the reality of the now is beyond space and time. Classic schools say that traditions must survive beyond their own alterations of time. Will it be so? But how to survive in a new "harvest" of students who do not seek the ancient?

Arts of Japan

Modernity and practicality have taken over Martial Arts. Once I asked a very traditional master what did he think he'd do when nobody sought his teachings any longer. He replied: "In order to awaken the Mind that seeks the Way, it's vital that we understand the uncertainty of the world and its importance in what we do". For a training mate who was with me, that master was not in his senses or ideas. However, from his way of seeing the world, harmony persists in the original sense of the search. That is, what is true for the reader, may possibly be found elsewhere. There exist concepts that claim that the best way not to suffer with changes is to give up everything with resolution. In its true sense, or in the depths of observation, this is also a form of harmony. It would be tantamount to say that we must follow the actions of the ancient masters, without looking for reward in it - it means that our gain-free practice is that of an unselfish mind. Then, we must

practice Budo just for the sake of Budo, since the external search does no longer exist. In this master's view, although he no longer has students, he will always be a student of himself. Whenever they ask me for a recipe to understand Budo and the path of Martial Arts, regardless of the path or the sport, I prescribe two stages: observe and seek what exists besides the forms! Nothing can be more wonderful for a martial artist than personal experience. And there is only one way: experiencing what is beyond the impression itself! As much as we have a sharp intellectuality and an exquisite mind, these do not substitute the experience of understanding what is good and bad within your personal perspective. This, the perspec-

Arts of Japan tive, is only built through the moments we experience. The beautiful and the ugly are only perceived after they manifest themselves in our lives. How can we understand, for example, the cutting line trained in a traditional Kenjutsu school, without first holding a katana? Today, the world is full of Martial Arts "experts" who have never stepped in a Dojo. If we compare the Martial Art and the music, we will see that the two analogously become perceptible through the sound, that is, the singular phenomenon of a certain instrument. Under the lens of Martial Arts, the style or path. In the case of music, the strength of a vocal style and on the other side, the network of possible and necessary relationships between different sounds. Following the comparison, we have the movements of attacks and defenses; and as regards relationships - those that are responsible for phenomena such as tuning - there is communion established between the mind and the body. The reason? It's simple, everything's art and everything's music ... Hence the affirmation of many masters who say: Do not learn to forget. Learn for your whole life. In the true way, in the real school, nobody practices Bugei only inside the Dojo. Understanding is not an intellectual process, it is not intuition or feeling. When we say "I understand clearly," it means that the mind is observing in a state of complete stillness; it means that the mind is listening without agreeing or disagreeing, completely silent - it's totally listening!

Grandmaster Taejoon Lee, 8th Dan of Hwa Rang Do, and son of the founder, Dr. Joo Bang Lee, presents a comprehensive introduction to Gumtoogi, the Hwa Rang Do Sword Fighting. In swordsmanship, in a duel, it is about life or death, not winning or losing. There’s only one price for a mistake “death”; there are no do-overs. This is the true warrior’s mind-set. Gumtoogi is the best way of cultivating this “Warrior Ethos”, “The Hwarang Spirit!” Another way we like to think of it as: “One Cut, One Life!” In the search of creating a modern sport venue of weapon fighting that aligns with the comprehensiveness of the Hwa Rang Do curriculum, we seriously looked into the possibility of adopting an existing weapon fighting system with its equipment and armor. Thereby we have decided to use the Kendo/Kumdo armor by adding a modification in the form of a leg protector (Hache Hogu), that allows for leg strikes as well as spinning cuts, and incorporated the rotational strikes to make it unique to our Art of Hwa Rang Do. In addition, we practice fighting with all sizes, variations and combinations of swords (made in bamboo) as well as incorporating a wide range of movements and techniques. In this DVD, Grandmaster Taejoon Lee explains in detail the bases of stepping, distancing, basic strikes to head, wrist, waist and legs, spinning leg strike, counters and an introduction to Ssang-gum, Twin Swords.

One of the reasons why Markus Schinhammer has produced this DVD is to pass on the standard of Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu as it was passed on to me by GM Samuel Kwok and his teachers GGM Ip Chun and GGM Ip Ching. We hope that with this DVD we will be able to help all those who wish to acquire the unique legacy and the tradition of Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu. Combat applications of techniques from all forms, such as from Siu Nim Tao – structure and basics, Chum Kiu – footwork, turns, combinations - Chum Kiu is the key to combat, Biu Gee – will not leave the Master's house. Two-way energy – footwork – elbows – finger techniques – makeshift techniques – most effective attack techniques, Muk Yan Chong Fut – the "wooden dummy" techniques – strength in techniques – toughening up – footwork – angle work. This works also includes excerpts from the Chi Sao programme and how to use these techniques in real combat, coupled with Fan Da techniques - effective and functional techniques with no frills. We will also discuss subjects such as simultaneity, structure, footwork, strength in techniques, plus many others, in detail. Like a key that is used to unlock a door, this DVD can be used to decrypt and demonstrate the hidden applications and the power of the Ip Man Wing Chun system.

Avi Nardia presents in this new and innovative DVD his approach to Israeli Martial Arts and especially to Israeli Jiu-Jitsu, developed on the basis of a vast experience as a Black Belt of different arts and instructor, among others, of the Yamam elite unit of the Israeli Special Forces. Israeli arts are rather a concept, a philosophy, with the idea of mixing things, similar to MMA, but incorporating Self-Defense, and for this you need a good base, with a knowledge of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Japanese Ju Jutsu, some Judo, Sambo, Boxing, Full-Contact, Karate, Thai Boxing, etcetera. You must also understand that it has nothing to do with religion, and in Martial Arts even the sacred can be changed. A technique that works, applies only in certain times and on certain people, not on everybody, because people are different. With these premises, Avi Nardia explains in detail the pressure points of the PPCT system (Pressure Point Control Tactics) with very basic movements that can help you in combat, work with knives and sticks, and disarm techniques against knife and gun.

Humans have been involved in many forms of struggle since the beginning of history. In most systems, techniques can be practiced in an alternative way, so that everyone can increase their fighting skills, although, over time, some systems have progressed focusing only on selfdefense and others on the sporting aspects. Boxing is strictly composed of short distance hitting techniques. Kyusho Jitsu is a high level component found in ALL hand-to-hand combat methods, that uses the pressure points and weakest parts of our body in hitting and attack situations, to subdue or control an opponent. Properly trained, both systems can be effective means of self-protection, and the same movements that a boxer practices can be used to improve our selfdefense skills. In today's world, we must be very careful about what we use and how we use it to protect ourselves. We can get by in a self-defense situation, only to suffer later at the hands of the legal system. Today's question is: "How can you defend yourself in a quick and efficient way without causing long-term damages to your opponent?"

Keysi A dream and a decision Frogs - ducks - eagles (2nd Part) These are the moments that we can over come thr ough daily practice, through the many repetitions, through the mistakes that make us doubt about our decisions and about ourselves. Despite everything, we make our mind to keep ahead and such decision is strongly reinforced by a new energy inside us, a fire which is nurtured and inspired on a unique way in the theor y, didactics and practice of the Keysi Method. ut because we are surrounded by many frogs we dare not fly high like an eagle, therefore we take the intermediate stage of the duck. At the beginning we feel better in this new role. We've freed ourselves from the shackles that were oppressing us and we've had our first experiences in the newly acquired freedom. We begin to fly, we discover new perspectives, we change our points of view, we rejoice and we value ourselves more. We begin to express ourselves in our training, we dare to experience and we learn to deal with our mistakes. And if things get too rough and doubts and fears torment us, we quickly land again and seek protection from our new comrades: the other ducks. They all love "complaining", boasting of their problems and wallowing in their failures, inasmuch as each one of them has a still bigger problem, which gives them more reasons to complain, so making up a circle that rarely comes to an end. In this intermediate stage like a duck, we go through a time in which we still don't have enough confidence in ourselves and we focus too much in our minds, in the wake of our actions and reactions.

B

“Going backwards, thanks to a great team and its full support, we have been able to build a solid foundation for our unique method. A great success!

Keysi Our mind can be very useful in recognizing ourselves and our environment. It's a highly powerful tool as long as we use it to our benefit and not only to store and reproduce information, but also to reflect critically. Through constant training, deepening in the experiences and the desire to better understand the Keysi method, our mind often reaches its limits. At some point in our training, it's not about reproducing everything from a logic point of view. It's rather a question of entering the flow of our body's mechanics and getting involved in our feelings and instincts. At this point in the training, some ducks will decide that they want to find out more about their experienced freedom and aerial superiority. They don't want to be constantly stopped by the "squawks" of others and so, they choose to take the next step. They want to live the newly discovered of the eagle power they feel within themselves. With the decision of taking this step and living our nature a new stage of freedom, adventure and ignorance begins that, anyway, also brings loneliness. It takes a lot of courage, determination, discipline and full responsibility to be able to reach the highest peaks and enjoy the best perspectives. An eagle cannot be dissuaded by the hustle and bustle of the world. The eagle listens, observes, analyzes, appreciates and gratefully accepts everything from its surroundings. It has the strength and courage to trust its instinct and let its heart guide it following its vision. For many, this freedom and air sovereignty will only be a dream. For others there will only be some attempts because they lack discipline, perseverance and resistance. The level of training recently achieved and the associated understanding open up new horizons for us. We are the only ones who set limits and restrict our possibilities of fully enjoying this adventure. It's the moment in which we acquire a high degree of freedom and we can experience more; it's when we accept the mistakes we've made and learn to appreciate them as part of our growth.

Keysi At this crossroads of life, dangers lurk. The biggest danger is getting lost. Joy and thirst for adventure often fall into oblivion, and the mind takes over again and wants to reapply its power. It has gained a lot of knowledge along the way and it has discovered that it can get great recognition. The mind has no interest in being instinctive or letting itself be guided by the heart to explore freedom and aerial superiority. The mind wants control, applause, admirers, titles and recognition. Here we are at a very interesting turning point, exciting and at the same time challenging in life, if we only had the courage to make all this come true and authentically develop ourselves. At this point, it's important to have clear by whom we prefer to be surrounded: frogs, ducks or eagles. The crucial thing is to listen to ourselves, follow our heart, be true to ourselves, recognize our roots and be loyal to them, and communicate honestly and openly with one another. Again, it's about decisions. Going backwards, thanks to a great team and its full support, we have been able to build a solid foundation for our unique method. A great success! By the way, there was also the Open Workshop. In this event, some beginners and advanced martial artists were invited to know our method, ask questions and discover new horizons. Though I was really excited, thoughts and doubts arose in me. Nonetheless, I decided to give the best of me and enjoy the moment with the other eagles of the

Keysi's International Team (Franziska Kiefer, Holger Neumann and Pierre Haspel). The time had come to open the wings and take everyone present on a thrilling journey; and so we did. Then, during training, and despite my excitement, I began to feel more comfortable and something happened inside of me. I was so focused and inspired that I didn't pay any attention to my inner and insecure mood. A great success for "Keysi by Justo Dieguez" and for the Inter national Team. We managed to take all the participants on our trip and we allowed them to feel our enthusiasm. After the open workshop, when everyone had gone back home and the training hall was empty, I sat down to review the day. A ritual to which I have grown accustomed in recent years. In the quietness and solitude of the room, I consciously perceived my inner state of mind. It was the same feeling I had had in my first training when I made up my mind that "when I'd grow up", I would inspire and accompany other people as a coach. This reflection was very relevant for me and impregnated me completely. Finally, I would like to wholeheartedly thank Justo DiĂŠguez for his trust, his camaraderie and the possibilities he offers me. I would also like to thank the other people who have accompanied me during all these years and continue to do so. Special thanks to my father, who lit the fire in me and sent me into the world like an eagle. We are born as eagles. It's our nature. It's deep in our hearts, waiting for us to spread our wings and fly.

The founders of WTU Wing Tsun Universe, GM Sifu Alfred Neudorfer and Si-Mo Rosa Ferrante Bannera, present a new work, focused this time on Chum Kiu, the second of the "solo" movements or classic forms of Wing Tsun, from the WTU perspective. The WTU Chum Kiu, or "4 waves", is especially characterized by the use of the falling step, the 3 basic kicks (a Wing Tsun slogan for kicks says that "each step is a kick, and each kick is a step"), and the arm bridges, long and short bridges, which determine the way we come into contact with the attacker. The DVD includes the execution of the complete Chum Kiu movement, the 4 Chum Kiu sections with 3 applications for each one of them, with the use of the 3 basic kicks and the arm bridges. Finally, the video shows the sequences 2-7 of the Chum Kiu movements with a training partner or ChiSao. An excellent work which presents to us a new way of experiencing both the "solo" movements and those with a training partner in the Art of Wing Tsun.

This work, personally carried out by Soke Juan Díaz, founder of the style, focuses on the technical application to self-defense, emphasizing the concept of constant fluidity, which is the very essence of Kaisendo. It's the continued application of a series of techniques in the case of an aggression, in order to neutralize the attack and respond immediately with a counterattack, and if the adversary reacts, to keep on applying the techniques in a chained manner. Kaisendo is based on four traditional Martial Arts such as Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Aikido and Karate. KarateJutsu is essentially 80% of the techniques in KaisenDo, which are completed with techniques of Aiki-Ju-Jutsu or Ju-Jutsu to conclude the defense. GM Juan Díaz presents us a wide arsenal of defense techniques against fist and kick attacks, different types of grabs, stick aggressions and threats and attacks with bladed weapons. An excellent system in constant evolution due to its open structure, and with capacity to adapt to all currents and trends in the field of Martial Arts.

To know or not to know... (While I have a glass of ice-tea with lemon...) “Talents are the whips that God gave us.” Truman Capote

ur great-grandparents read the newspaper, our grandparents listened to the radio, our parents watched television… We navigate daily on the Internet, but we also continue reading the newspaper and magazines, we still listen to the radio and we watch cable television… Times have evolved, the thirst for information, the thirst to know grows day by day, one learns a lot about the past, and participates in the present, which, at the end of the day, is the only real thing that exists, though one can’t measure it, given that the present is that “little-big” instant between the second that has passed and the second to come… An instant without duration. But the future is the great unknown and one desires it with the whole soul, making plans for when it arrives, even knowing that in reality it doesn’t exist; as optimistic as we might be, the future DOESN’T exist. Buddha said that if one wanted to know the past, they only had to look at the present because it was its result, and if one wanted to know the future, they only had to look at the present, which is the cause of that future… Buddha really spoke about the PRESENT. But in this nest of unknowns, there are things that we know how to take as certain, what we call “TRUE TRUTHS”… like that which the masters taught us: “Art is an energy that doesn’t cease nor is it destroyed”, or that eternal truth that appears in all the sacred texts: “The most powerful force, what moves the universe, is LOVE”, or that spiritual maxim: “We are more than a body… which is only the recipient of our Being.” Not knowing makes people mediocre and knowing makes one miserable and limited, so when one knows something, one instantly realizes that in fact one knows nothing at all. Let’s say that when you “know”

“Frank Zappa thought that information was not knowledge, that knowledge was not knowing and that knowing was not the truth…” something, you no longer need anything… The question then would be, to know or not to know what thing? And the unquestionable answer is the same for both extremes: “Ignorance is NOT knowing what one DOESN’T know and knowing is knowing what one truly knows”… Confucius said that “To know what one knows and what one doesn’t know is the characteristic that shows one knows.” What is important to know “is the true meaning of life” and each individual is the one who later decides what the important thing is for each one. Frank Zappa thought that information was not knowledge, that knowledge was not knowing and that knowing was not the truth… he had the opinion that the more one knows, the more difficult things would be, because when one discovered more things, the more unpleasant everything would seem. My friend Mario Cubillos holds that with respect to the “knowing or not knowing” it is necessary to remember that Simpson episode in which Homer discovers that his lack of intelligence is due to some Crayolas that he had stuck in his nose and that they reached the encephalic mass, and after taking them out he becomes aware that it is sadder to live being familiar with and knowing the way things are, so he decides (and what a good decision) to put the Crayolas in his nose again… Knowledge does NOT make us happy, on the contrary, it causes anxiety because it shows us how limited we are, but not for that is it necessary to be unhappy in order to stop being mediocre… (Grrrrrrr, that seems like a Buddhist Koan). However, knowing can give you joy and make you more mature, awakened, realized, free, independent, autonomous. The good thing about knowing is that it contributes everything to us; let’s say that it opens a door in our vision, in order to NOT study more and it gives us a beautiful dream concerning everything that we do for life and in life.

“I believe that it IS worth it to know and that it is definitely worth it not to be one of the mediocre; wisdom comes from there…”

I believe that it IS worth it to know and that it is definitely worth it not to be one of the mediocre; wisdom comes from there… There is a Samurai maxim that says: “To know and to act are one and same.” It is good to remember that the intelligent being, or reaching illumination, makes one understand that we are a “Happy Being”. The master Daniel Medvedov tells us that illumination is a gift that offers one a state of contentment and of PEACE, because we are happy and we don’t know it, but with illumination we remember: let’s leave aside the bitterness of the erudite and we have everything with soda, always returning to Ithaca, in every moment putting the Being in front, in each action and thought: For what does this serve, as far as my Being goes; what I am doing? How does what I am doing help my Being? Does my Being even need this that I need? And so on… The illuminated person is a joker, a total Socrates, an acidic and loving Heracles, having to look for Heracles, it’s fantastic… Just as the master Gurdieff said: “One must arrive to Philadelphia” (The Greek ‘Love (Filia) of Brothers (Adelphos’). To know is to know everything and not to know everything is not to know… To know, first, you have to know a lot and later, you have to know a little”. Knowing is knowing, like the sea is the sea to the shore… We have to make an effort, then, to be happy and to live the fullness of life; one must aspire to the truth as such, as one who is dying of thirst aspires to the sip of the water that will save him, like an old and wise Zen proverb says.

Police

Psychology of an unexpected conflict Thirteen years ago we were invited, together with General SanchĂs, to visit the New York Police Academy. Budo International magazine has always unequivocally positioned itself on the side of the warriors, and so it was recognized at the time by the city of New York and its Police Department. As a result of that meeting, a friendship arose with some of its members that has lasted for years, and from which this article emerged, whose interest and validity compels us to reprint it and share it again. Police W YORK. On Thursday, June 3, 2005, newspapers in New York City published the news of a shoot-out in which a police colleague was injured; his bullet-proof vest miraculously saved his life. In the same news, it was revealed that while the officer who was hurt confronted the delinquent, his terrified partner ran away from the scene and every newspaper coincided in highlighting the fact, namely for the shocking act of cowardice. Some time ago, the news came out about Alex Gong, director of the Fairtex Gym in California, who was shot and killed in one of the most frequented streets in San Francisco. The events occurred like this: A driver who was traveling in an SUV struck his car, which was parked. Immediately, he took off. Alex chased him on foot until he trapped him a bit later. The driver had stopped at a red light; when Alex reached him, the individual took his gun out and opened fire against him, losing himself in the traffic afterwards. Alex received the impact of the bullets a little above his heart; it was a mortal wound. Later, the Cherokee, which had been robbed, was found abandoned in another place. For the readers unfamiliar with Alex Gong, we have to say that he was a world Muay Thai champion. His name had shone in important signs in Las Vegas, on ESPN, HBO, and Discovery Channel. In other words, he was a very well prepared martial artists. On Thursday, September 12, 1991, the police officer Hector Antonio Fontanez Diaz died as a result of the shots he received chasing an armed suspect into an alley. The suspect had been seen in the area of a bicycle and carrying a fire-arm. Officer Fontanez was able to return fire and hit the suspect at least five times and he was subsequently arrested by other officers. In their time, these events were front-page news and caught the public’s attention. The reason for bringing these stories up in this article is because in those three events, an “unforeseen violence” occurred, and they perfectly reflect the human reactions unleashed, that is, the conduct we exhibit facing a conflict we didn’t expect. When a person goes through a situation of stress such as the people mentioned above were exposed to, the “normal” and “human” reaction is instinctive, on a survival level. This can be of two kinds: Fear (flight) or rage (aggression). In the first case, that is, that of the police who ran away, it is easy to determine that fear took over and managed to control him. Fear is a natural human emotion that helps us to focus in a stressful situation; however, it is generally considered as a weakness of character. Fear can

“Fear, once demarcated in symptoms, is nothing more than a syndrome that solidifies in a well-defined framework of psycho-somatic alterations”

Police be provoked by a real threat or one perceived as real; our instinctive reaction will be that of intervening or on the contrary, the opposite, running away. Fear, once demarcated in symptoms, is nothing more than a syndrome that solidifies in a well-defined framework of psycho-somatic alterations such as: tachycardias or bradycardia; the diminishing or augmenting of certain glandular activity; changes in body temperature, etc., etc…. all of that in turn produces transformations in the individual in certain parts of his body that compel him to act in one or the other direction. In the case of Alex Gong and the policeman Fontanez Diaz, it was courage and rage that determined their reaction. The three primary human reactions are courage or rage, fear, and love. The three of them are set off as the result of an immediate reaction to an external stimulation, or as the result of an indirect subjective process derived from memory, association, or introspection. What’s curious about all of this is that the anatomical structures where the controls of these reactions reside are all found in the same part of our middle brain: the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus controls a wide range of vital functions in our organism. It also directs the response of “flight or fight” of the autonomous nervous system. Excitation or fear force signals to travel toward the hypothalamus, which in turn produces tachycardia or increased pulse rate, accelerated breathing, dilated pupils, and increases blood circulation. When people get mad or are frightened, they begin to think, and after that, to act from the middle brain instead of the front part of the brain, which is where the “human mind” resides, or the most advanced brain. I know it doesn’t sound very attractive, but despite all our apparent evolution, the only way to influence this area of the brain is the same thing that works with dogs: psychological conditioning. That is: to repeat precisely the stimuli that one could confront in reality and tune the desired response over and over again so that in the middle of a possible crisis, the brain will have a greater probability of reacting in the desired way, even though we are in a situation of extreme stress. In effect, this is what we do when we train: learning to condition or to control these primary emotions, whether we are talking about police training or Martial Arts.

Psychological conditioning we know, the majority of the police departments and security agencies try to educate their members with some kind of training that helps them to do their job better. However, the limited possibilities in economic terms, the perennial lack of personnel, apart from the constant threat of law suits, forces police departments and security agencies to limit the possibilities of training their personnel in a realistic way. For example, in the majority of the police shooting ranges they follow security protocols which go against the incorporation of the psychological pressure of the exercise, something that would offer much more realism and effectiveness to the exercises. 1. One shoots after hearing a predetermined sound by the instructors. 2. Earphones are used to absorb the sound of the shots (of course, in order to prevent injury to the ears). 3. One shoots from a pre-determined line the quantity of bullets that the control tower determines. 4. One shoots at a pre-determined hour and place at generally immobile objects that, of course, don’t shoot back. In fact, the training that they offer is generally quite acceptable in terms of the physical and technical training of the student. It will be the attitude of the participant involved in the training that in the end decides the level and the authenticity of the person. It is the student who must find a way of integrating the psychological and tactical part of his training and adjust the levels of his personal training to reality. In this sense, Lieutenant Colonel Grossman, in his book On Killing, demonstrated that the continued use of computer games increases the probabilities of success by way of appropriate reaction in officers facing an “unexpected conflict.

Police The four levels of mental preparation We all respond to stimulation in function of the mental state in which we find ourselves at that moment. For that, to be able to respond to a possible unexpected attack one must cultivate alertness to all that is happening around one. If it is true that it is neither practical nor appropriate to live “with the finger on the trigger,” neither is it so to live your life in limbo, with your back to the world around you and converting yourself into a walking target. In some military corps, as well as in emergency services, the different levels of alertness are taught through a system that uses color codes that represent the different kinds of consciousness of experience of the human being.

Condition white This is a mental state in which the majority of people spend their lives. In “condition white” one doesn’t expect any problems nor does one look for problems. In this condition we feel and act in perfect

confidence and assurance. It is as if the world around us was our own room and we had control of everything that happens to our surroundings. We think that nothing bad can happen to us. It is the ideal condition for becoming a victim.

Condition yellow This is the condition in which one must be in when we find ourselves in public, that is, in a medium that is not intimate or familiar. It corresponds to the equivalent mental state of the traffic light (in yellow), that is to say that this state implies that you must proceed with caution. You must be conscious of things happening around you. Who is behind you, for example, and always keeping at least an arm’s length from strangers. It is even convenient to get accustomed to playing a mental game analyzing people around us: what kind of people might they be‌ what situations might arise unexpectedly, etc. In this condition one must listen to one’s own instincts, attentive to any possible danger.

Police Condition orange At this level you must definitively understand‌ something is wrong. You must admit that there is danger. This is a state of alarm. The decision is to separate yourself from the danger or prepare yourself to act.

Condition red In this condition, action is imminent. As soon as the threat is apparent, you have to act. Any response or strike that you have been preparing must be carried out immediately with all the speed and aggression possible. At that moment you must exercise control over your emotions, not suppress them.

By way of conclusion Training in order to participate in a tournament, to improve your physical appearance, even to maintain health are very good reasons, but necessarily, they don’t prepare us to confront spontaneous, life or death situations. Despite fear being such a frequent emotion, there are very few people who train surrounding themselves with circumstances that evoke this emotion. When training, this matter should be seriously considered and one should work de facto in the development of total self-control of fear and rage, two reactions of the most inconvenient nature when in an unexpected conflict that can end your life.

In this first DVD, GM Licesio Prieto, of the European Kajukenbo Kosho Ryu Kenpo Association, presents the essence of the Art of Kajukenbo, as it was transmitted to him by his Sifu SGM Cherry Ortega and many others. We will see the 1, 2 and 14 Palamas Sets and their applications from a more traditional point of view, from the perspective of the "Ka" (Karate and Kenpo), and then an application more suited to the Kajukenbo Kosho-Ryu school, working more the "Ju" aspects (Judo and JuJitsu) of the art. We will also study the first two Tricks or Punch Counters (cons against fist attacks), Grab arts (defenses against grabs), the GM Tony Ramos' cons, Knife counters (against knife attacks), Club counters (against stick attacks), various drills, and a sample of the work on the "Ju" aspects, emphasizing dislocations and controls. An excellent DVD that will help you assimilate the concepts and ideas of the Kajukenbo essential program, that GM Licesio Prieto will progressively develop in future works.

What happens when two people practice Chi-Sao, what is the meaning of their practice and what the objectives? In this 3rd DVD, "Chi Sao from the base to an advanced level," Sifu Salvador SĂĄnchez addresses perhaps the most important aspect of Wing Chun: ChiSao, the soul of the system itself, which provides the practitioner with some special characteristics which are completely different from others, and gives him great virtues. This role deals with some aspects quite basic in principle, but as you delve into them, they'll be surprising to you. It is a very clear feature traditional Chinese culture; what it's very obvious at first glance, it nevertheless contains a second or third reading, which will surely change your approach, practice and understanding. We will discuss how to practice Chi Sao through our working drills and how to apply those drills, that ability in a sparring, linking certain concepts, perhaps not so much tied to traditional Kung Fu, such as biomechanics, structures, knowledge of physics, etc., in order to obtain better results in our practice.

Commando Krav Maga has proven popular with many other martial arts instructors around the world, from various schools, who wish to enhance their own abilities and provide a reality based fighting system to their existing students that is both accessible and dependable. “Simplicity is genius is Moni's catchphrase but this trademark humility belies the work and thought which has to be done to distill anything to its core essence. Now suitably refined, this is a system which is suitable for, and accessible to, both teachers and their students. Military and civilian sectors. The experienced and the novice. This is because, quite simply, it works. It is based on fundamental principles and practices which, if adhered to, and with a little luck, will keep you safer on the street. So maybe it's time to take what ever you know onto another level. In this new DVD, Moni Aizik teaches us in all detail how to solve various situations that can usually occur in the street: kinfe attacks, punches, threats from the back with a knife or a gun and holding our hand, various examples on the ground as knife attacks or situations in which the aggressor applies us an Armbar or a Triangle, and how to solve weapon threatening situations against third parties.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Be your own Bodyguard Š August 2018, Franco Vacirca. Photos: Jens Lorenzen

When I started martial arts, my goal had never been to somehow end up as a bouncer or even as a bodyguard. But one thing brought me to another, and so I stood - in 1991, one night as a bouncer in front of one of the best-visited in-places. Shortly before that, I had been here myself as a guest and stood at the long queue to get in, as one of my friends regularly DJed in this disco. As the local owner just put together a new security team, I came to my first job at the door of that club. By that time, I had spent a lot of time as a Wing Chun student and put a lot of emphasis on the practical and realistic use in training. As a boy I came after a short time in Judo sport to Kung-Fu. I started Judo relatively early, but in 1979, on my 10th birthday, I attended the first lessons in Wing Chun. I was rather scared as a boy, even if I was always assessed differently. Walking in the dark or being alone in a crowd was not my thing. That was probably one of the reasons why I wanted to feel strong and ultimately started Kung-Fu training.

At the various clubs where I could work as bouncer and gain experience, there were plenty of good and less good situations that I can still remember well today. One that I learned quickly was, in any case, no matter who stood in front of me, always keep enough distance. This to avoid pre-emptive, dangerous and surprising attacks (such as "head-butts"), since such scenarios were quite common. In the later 90s, there was the phase of knife attacks. As you can see, not only the fashion is repeated, but also some bad habits. This activity led me to engage with other martial arts and exercise forms. I got a lot of books from the USA and England on the topic of “Self-protection at the door” or “Practical Defense for Security Personnel / Police”. I also took a shooting course to get to know more about the handling of firearms. Through numerous contacts, from my then martial arts teachers in Los Angeles, I came also to some former (or still active) Navy Seals, Rangers and SWAT members, giving

sometimes self-defense courses. This was a very intense, but also interesting training phase in my life. Of course, this type of education not only influenced me and my brother Demetrio, but also our members at our Academy in Zurich. During a stay in California, while training with a security team in Los Angeles, I could join a Russian casino owner. It turned out that the client, himself a passionate and highlevel Hapkido expert, was leading his own HKD association in Moscow. Through this multi-week stay I did not only get to know some martial arts icons but also some actors in Hollywood, but we also become close friends. Soon I was not only responsible for his safety but trained more often together. Short time after I found myself with a first-class ticket in a Swissair flight from Zurich to Moscow. Tmur Akhmerov, that was the name of the Russian HKD expert, wanted to introduce me to his students and friends at home. In flight to Moscow, next to me sat an entrepreneur who produced

shoes all over the world to sell them in Switzerland. Rather surprised, he asked me what I would do professionally, so I told him that I was teaching martial arts and had an invitation to give a seminar in Moscow. When he handed me his business card, I unfortunately could not provide him with mine yet, since I was not yet that professional organized, but that would have change soon. By the end of the 80s, I had been mainly studying Jeet-Kune-Do, Muay Thai Boxing and Filipino Kali-Eskrima. Ground fighting (Gracie Jiu-Jitsu), which was then gradually integrated into our Academy, was still in its beginning. Therefore, I designed the seminar program teaching mainly from the Jeet-Kune-Do (Concepts). Arrived in Moscow, I was received by all very polite, but in the air, you could feel a slight tension of the participants. I can’t speak Russian, so my body had to speak more for me. Unfortunately, during demonstration of a technique at mid-distance (trapping range), my friend Timur got a hit and end up with a blue eye from me. In Zurich I might had to stop the seminar right away back then, but not in Moscow. From that moment on, I did not have to “explain” anything in-deep. It was practically enough that I had to show the technique once or twice to get all the participants back to practice.

My friend Timur was the happiest among them, even though he made a grumpy face for a while and walked around the gym with the ice bag on his eye. Somehow, I had earned respect, so I was told hours later at dinner, after the first two sake bottles and kilos of sushi had already felt our stomach. As I always say: “...other cultures, different customs”. Working and training in the middle distance was one of my favorite distances. As a Bruce Lee fan, you might know it from the battle scenes as in the movie "Enter the Dragon" when Lee is forced to duel against various masters. The duels always start with the fact that both fighters face each other and touched with an extended arm. The trapping range is not only important to a Jeet Kune-Do practitioner. No matter which fighting style you prefer here, this distance is universal and therefore also an important position in my (today's) lessons.

In the various situations at the club door, or in personal protection, I got to know this position well. The training of the arms / hands (sensitivity), and of course the legs / stand (balance, stability), in connection with the whole-body posture, is very important. Therefore, I think that forms of exercise (so-called drills), such as “Chisau” in Wing-Chun, as well as the “Hubad-Lubad” in Filipino Kali, or “Pushing-Hands” in Taichi, etc., can be useful for all (Gracie) Jiu-Jitsu-kas at this distance (to a reasonable extent). This contribution by me should not be regarded as a guide, or even as a manual, for “self-defense for personal protection”. I just want to convey to the reader, a part of my personal experience and thoughts that I was able to do in that area at that time: 1) I learned that I always had to be close to my client, so the distance between me and the client was never allowed to be more than an arm's length, which in turn

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu led me into this trapping range, should an offender try to make an attack. I also learned to move and position myself in a small space. In my opinion, this is neglected in sports Jiu-Jitsu. In fact, this distance was conveyed in "classical" Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, by my teacher, Master Pedro Hemetério, and passed to him from his masters (Carlos and Hélio Gracie). The distance of an “arm's length” is the first distance where one will be when the opponent will stand in front of them surprisingly and without foreknowledge. 2) Should the offender try to attack my client, then I must, in fact, develop the ability and instinct to intercept an attack effectively, and to displace the attacker and, if possible, unbalance him. The attacker should be as fast as possible out of action and they as protectors should be able to bring the client as quickly as possible to safety. 3) In any case, as a bodyguard, as well as a civilian, I do not want to end up in an unnecessary and perilous “duel”. As a person in a self-defense situation, I must also be aware that self-defense can also be “fighting” against several opponents. It is ultimately about survival! 4) If the attacker also has a life-threatening weapon, which of course would make the whole protector / selfdefense situation (and your role) more complex. The disarming of a weapon, whether gun or knife – or any other weapon, must be specially trained and learned. Your defense in such a situation must be targeted, fast and efficient. 5) In personal protection you quickly learn that prevention can not only be learned from a written manual. The experience of professionals who must deal with such issues daily has life-saving knowledge, not only for their client but also for themselves. In self-defense, this is just as well... men (and woman) can and must also deal with it if you really want to protect efficiently. The physical and mental state of them is to be addressed in this area. As a (or own) bodyguard, you must also realize that the attacker may not necessarily be a “killer”, but it could be

one or more fans touching their client at the same time, or simply want to an autograph or take a selfie with him. In another, very common situation, the attacker could be a drunk family member or (until recently) a very nice and attentive work colleague who misinterpreted a sign. But it could also be someone who spied on them in the last three weeks – day in, day out – to know their vulnerabilities and get the most out of them at the right moment. That's why protective measures are so important as prevention. Just learning some cool techniques is not enough, it has always been that way. Prevention techniques and tactics start with them, where they park their car, or how to block off an unwanted hug, to the knowledge that you should always get along best with moderate (or even better, without any) alcohol, to maintain always control over oneself. 6) Another point is emergency preparation. Do you know all the necessary telephone numbers such as police (117), fire department (118) and rescue service (144)? Of course, in the field of personal protection, emergency preparations also include the measures, should the client be seriously injured, and thus of course one would be forced to define the fastest possible route in order to be able to reach the nearest hospital if need. In general, the evacuation times are very important in an emergency, be it with vehicles or even by helicopter. Fast and efficient reaction is certainly very important here. Finally, I would like to say that in my life at that time, not only my “fighting” knowledge was tested. I was able to learn from a wide variety of training sessions from a wide variety of field experts, which helped me a lot and I am very grateful to all of them. Trust Martial Arts, TRUST Tiger Program: Children’s self-defense, values´education, character training, movement training, assertiveness, self-assurance, self-control, safety and life skills. The increasing concern of parents about their children's security in the face of the dangers to which kids are exposed in modern societies is not something that has gone unnoticed to Martial Arts masters. Few of them, however, have developed specific projects on this subject as successfully as Professor Andreas Shuster; a scheme about which he speaks to us in here, and that explains in detail in this great video. In it, both parents and Disciplinary Arts teachers will find guidance and inspiration to strengthen the safety of that lovely little people, so important to all of us. An original, practical and brilliant work that will undoubtedly be a reference for all of us who are concerned about this issue. “Trust us for a better life”.
