Before, these things were only fixed by wars and today, with the nuclear button active and in several hands, the threat of total annihilation has those hands busy in continuous zonal skirmishes, which do not cause however sufficient casualties to make up for the birth of so many people, but they encourage mass migrations. Pigeons cry out against pollution and wave the climate change as their banner ... What a paradox! Pigeons, that screw it all up, are proclaiming the planet's extreme defense, when the true definition of pollution is "much of something in the same place". Look yourselves at the mirror! that we humans are converting all the proteins on the planet into human proteins. An exponential growth like that doesn't seem sensible, or we will end up eating each other. But we got no choice, it's a natural command that we have as a standard feature… So, as the old Spanish saying goes, go claim the master gunsmith! On the horizon, meanwhile, us lovers of the beef steak, t-bone steak and other delicious meats, we are all floundering, because the farts of the cows have put them in the pillory. And what about the farts of humans? Nobody talks about that? Moreover ... They are much closer and annoying! And of course, we are far more numerous than poor cows. There’s no way we can stop being a part of it, we’re not as important as we think we are so we can feel guilty. We humans are a part of the planet, and it is the planet itself on its journey through infinity the one that is going through a cycle phase or zone of predominance of Fire Energy. There's no way that we cannot be part of all this, we are not as important as we think we are, so as to feel guilty. Now as for arrogance, well... we’re not missing an inch of that! With so much background noise, having a thought of your own is difficult, I know, but do not lose hope, inform yourself and when you read, do it like chickens when they eat: Peck at the book looking at it and then, to swallow what you've read, raise your head and ... Think! As the old banker March said: "Son, don't think about what they tell you, but why they tell you." Maintain your mental hygiene and If everybody seems to agree to anything ... distrust ... and you'll be right!

Karate The master of Masters Gichin Funakoshi was the greatest of the great. The day he was born, karate turned for the better. He died a meijin (master) at the age of 88 on April 26, 1957 at 8: 45 a.m. He passed away in Tokyo, Japan at 73 Hayashi-Machi, Bunkyo-Ku. This common uncommon man was born in Shuri, Okinawa and carne to Japan at the age of 53 in the year Taisho 3u-ichinen (1922) to develop and expand karate. His funeral was held on May 10, 1957 at 2 p.m., Zoshigaya, Botchinai, Susodo, and he was laid to rest shortly thereafter. The world will never see another like him again. Can you imagine yourself, at the age of 53, going somewhere else to propagate karate and become great Well, he did it. Karate in Japan would not have been able to flourish without him. He studied under the masters Itosu, Yasuzato, Matsumuura and Arakaki.

Karate He achieved the secrets (okugi) of their art, and he brought them to mainland Japan.When he first came to Japan Ărom Okinawa, he stayed at the Okainawa Prefectural students' dormitory at Suidobata, Tokyo. After a short stay, he opened his first school, the Meishojuka. Later he opened the Shotokan in Mejiro, Japan and regrettably, this famous school was burned down during World War II. At the Shotokan, he developed many outstanding students of karate, such as Takagi and Nakayama of Nippon Karate Kyokai; Yoshida of Takudai; Obata of Keio; Noguchi of Waseda; but the most outstanding was to be Otsuka, the founder of Wado-Ryu.

Karate t is said that in his traveis in and around Japan, giving demonstrations and lecturing, Funakoshi always had Otsuka accompany him. Gichin Funakoshi was a humble man. He preached and practiced an essential humility. He did not preach the humility of virtuousness, but a basic humility of a man who is rooted in the true perspective of things, full of life and awareness. He lived at peace with himself and with his fellow men. Whenever I think of Gichin Funakoshi, a parable | called a man of Tao (Do) and a little man, comes to mind. As it is told, a student once asked, "What is the difference between a man of Tao and a little man?" The sensei replied, "It is simple. When the little man receives his first dan (degree or rank), he can hardly ' wait to run home and shout at the top of his voice to tell everyone that he made his first dan. Upon receiving his second dan, he will climb to the rooftops and shout to the people; upon receiving the third dan, he will jump in his automobile and parade through town with horns blowing, telling one and all about his third dan. "The sensei continued, "When the man of Tao receives his first dan, he will bow his head in gratitude. Upon receiving the second dan, will bow his head and his shoulders; upon receiving his third dan, will bow to the waist and quietly walk alongside the wall so that people | will not see him and notice him." Gichin Funakoshi was a man of Tao. He placed no emphasis on competitions, record breaking and championships. He placed emphasis on the ultimate aim of individual self-perfection. He believed in the common decency and respect that one human being owed to the other.

Karate Gichin Funakoshi The greatness of Funakoshi Gichin cannot be denied. However, serious students of the martial arts claim his greatness lies not in karate as much as in the precepts he left behind. Funakoshi Gichin believed that the mental attitude of karate was more important than the physical aspect and he left to the karate world twenty precepts which he felt were indispensable to the total education of a karate student.

1. Karate-Do wa rei ni hajimari, rei ni owaru koto wo wasuruna Do not forget, karate begins with respect and ends with respect. Without respect there is no budo, no karate, just a degeneration into a street fight or brawl. We would come down to the level of animals and revert to jungle mentality where there is no order, and kill or be killed is the rule. Rei does not mean just bowing the head; it entails the common decency and respect that one human being owes to the other. We must be circumspect in our relations to others this is the basis of karate.

2. Karate ni sentĂŠ nashi In karate, one does not make the first move. All kata begins with defense and ends with defense. Kata is the backbone of karate. A true karateka never strikes in anger and never strikes first. It would be futile to continue in karate if this particular precept is not thoroughiy understood. Karate ni sente nashi actually comes from the most fundamental morality of bushido -one does not draw the sword at every instant, provocation or irritation that makes one angry or upset. This precept develops the patiences that separates the men from the boys.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Karate is an auxiliary of justice. A true karateka never engages in unlawful activity and firmly believes in law and order. Without justice, the fabric of society would be torn; however, to carry on justice, one must have ability and most important, one must give every man his due.â&#x20AC;?

4. Mazu jiko wo shire, shikashite ta wo shire Know thyself trien know another. a) If you know your enemy and know yourself, you are in good shape. You will not lose or be in real danger. b) If you don't know your enemy and only know yourself, you lose one or win one. Winning or losing depends on the circumstances.

c) If you don't know the enemy and don't know yourself, this is the greatest of all dangers - a truly deplorable situation. ' To be in the (a) position is the superior position; to be in the (b) position is the middle position; to be in the (c) position is utter folly. One day I asked sensei, "If a student of the martial arts truly understands and embraces the precepts of the martial arts, what does he become?" Sensei answered: "A man of humility. Never forget: “Minoru hodo atama wo sageru inaho kana.” “The stalk that bears the most rice hangs lowest”. Definitely, Funakoshi Gichin was an example of what sensei told me.

Karate More on Funakoshi In 1922 when the Department of Education of Okinawa Prefecture asked Funakoshi Gichin to demonstrate karate in Tokyo, Japan at the First National Athletic Exhibition held by the Japanese Ministry of Education, little did anyone realize - much less Funakoshi Gichin that the course of karate history would engulf the shores of every land. This was his second visit to mainland Japan. In 1917 he had, by invitation from the Dai Nippon Butoku-Kai, given a karate demonstration at the Butoku-Den (Butoku training hall) in Kyoto, Japan. This was the first official exposure of karate outside of Okinawa and even in his wildest dreams Funakoshi Gichin never envisioned that his destiny and his karate would lead him to Tokyo, Japan and immortality. He said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Life is a struggle and always will be; and, what use is a man of strength without philosophy!â&#x20AC;? He believed that a man of philosophy went beyond mere technique. In precept number five of one of his works he said, "Gitjutsu yori shinjutsu (intuition more than mere technique)". Intuition alerts one to danger before it strikes and makes it possible for one to avoid danger, whereas facing danger with mere technique and physical strength can cause great harm one way or the other.

Karate A master swordsman once trained his three sons in the art of swordsmanship and wished to see how they progressed. He sent word to his sons saying that he wanted to pick his successor and requested that they visit him in his room. He placed a wooden pillow over the curtain at the entrance of his room and had it arranged in such a manner that the slightest touch of the curtain would cause it to fall on one's head. His eldest son was called first. The son approached the room, stopped, stood still for a moment, reached carefully without disturbing the curtain, removed the pillow, entered the room, and carefully replaced it. The second son was called in. He touched the curtain to raise it, saw the pillow fall, caught the pillow with his hands, entered the room and replaced it. The third son, who was the most skilled physically and had the best technique, thought that he had the successorship all sewn up and when called, barged into the room, flinging the curtain aside. The pillow fell on his head and in anger. He cut the pillow in half with his sword before it hit the floor. His skill with his sword in cutting and replacing it with speed and finesse pleased him and he smiled in anticipation. His father looked at him and said, "You are a disgrace to the art of swordsmanship and to the family. Intuition is more than mere technique. Leave this house and don't come back until you realize that!" To the second son, the father said, "You must train more and train as if every day was your last day."

Karate

To the first son, he stated, "I can now retire in peace as now you understand what the martial arts is all about." And he gave his son his sword. Precept six stated, Kokoro wa hanatan Roto wo yosu. (You need to let your mind go). There are two stages in the life of a martial artist -beginner and advanced. Most never pass the beginner stage. This is the stage where one learns to control his mind. In the learning process one seeks and brings back his mind if his mind strays and wanders. This is important to the learner for he has been told the mind must be controlled; and it is important, for the mind must be controlled in the learning process. But after the learning process we must let the mind go and the lear ner and learning becomes one. For example, if we have a puppy and it gets lost, we seek it out and bring it back home; this is the stage of the learner and learning, a separation of mind and body, an intellectual digestion. When the learner becomes learning itself with no separation, one can say he has now become advanced. He has let his mind go. His mind will never be contaminated no matter where he goes because his mind is free - just like the puppy that has now lived to be a full-grown dog. The dog can stray and still come home by itself of its own will, free to roam. The dog has learned, and because he has become learning itself, there is no problem.

Precept seven read, "Wazawai wa getai ni shozu." (Misfortune always occur in negligence). The unguarded moment is the biggest enemy for a martial artist. For example, all accidents occur in negligence of some sort. Think about it. If a house burns down, naturally fire burned it down; but, what is the source. Not the fire, the source is negligence that created the fire. Unused advantages are no advantages. You do not need anything else than negligence to ensure that things will come to grief. It has been said, "Do not be like the restaurant that one day neglected to clean the kitchen and the health inspector dropped in."

Wing Chun

“Wing Chun can be a real ego eater...”

My Martial Arts experience As a boy I was a hobby boxer and boxed for fun, I was a member at the local club but I didn’t have any official bouts, (there was enough fighting outside of the ring)… My martial arts adventure began in 1985, Xen Chuan Karate in Brighton, with a great trainer, Mick Ashdown. It was a mix from traditional Kyokushinki, Shotokan, Kung Fu and Kickboxing we also learnt stick and Nunchucks, an eventful time filled with lovely people and colourful characters...

Wing Chun moved to Germany in 1991 and concentrated on Kickboxing and Boxing. My Wing Chun Journey began in 1995 when I met my first Sihing (trainer). At that time I worked part-time as a doorman for a local security company in Dresden, Germany. My martial arts experience up to this time was primarily in kickboxing and boxing, I was the welterweight county champion in both sports. The problem with my boxing and kickboxing experience was, that on the door, the tools provided from these styles is for security work, of secondary importance, deescalation skills are far more beneficial... especially when you want to stay on the right side of the law. The security company Bosses, Frank and Michael were private students of a Wing Chun Trainer and wanted all their doormen to train together to prepare for possible disco and nightclub scenarios ... The training was hard, lots of blood, sweat and occasional vomit, great character building stuff... There was even a bell to ring like in the Marines when they couldn’t take any more and quit, and that happened more than once! I was hooked... the fact that the training wasn‘t dependent on weight class, and that definitely helped on the door. I told the trainer I would quit boxing and start Wing Chun as soon as I gave up active competition. That happened in 1998 and 1999 I began to train twice a week, still boxing training parallel my ego wasn’t prepared to let go entirely.... it was my problem going from a „hard“ style where I was relatively proficient to a softer style where I really knew nothing... Wing Chun can be a real ego eater...

“Now I teach children, teenager, adult and ladies self defense classes, de-escalation workshops and special courses for security companies. I love doing what I’m doing, training all ages from children to pensioners, and everybody learns Wing Chun!”

Wing Chun

I had at around this time, a relatively well paid job and an understanding wife (Kathrin, who managed travel agencies and worked weekends). I used this opportunity to travel all over Europe to Wing Chun and (since 2001) Escrima Seminars ... I had a fantastic time and learnt and trained with some brilliant people. In Italy in 2003 I participated at an international Wing Chun and Escrima Seminar and there I met my Wing Chun Master Andrew Cameron. This was the first time that I trained with somebody in Wing Chun who trained and corrected me in my native tongue, there was... and still is lots to correct! Master Cameron invited me to train privately at his home in Spain, a fantastic experience in itself, he lives and breathes for teaching Wing Chun. That was in 2004 and I have visited him and trained at least twice a year every year since. Master Cameron has given regular seminars in Dresden and in 2013 he introduced us to the Wing Chun International Blueprint. Like everything change can be challenging and now, six years into the Blueprint, there is a far deeper understanding of Master Camerons teaching methodology, how and why it differs from what we had trained before. The training has become more varied, we are encouraged to develop our Wing Chun to suit our needs, creating our own sequence of movements, albeit within certain easy to learn parameters. As Master Cameron says â&#x20AC;&#x17E;We become masters of our own Wing Chun.â&#x20AC;&#x153;

Wing Chun The main difference in the training is the structure and configuration that students learn how to train with each other. This is regardless of their student grade, due to the layered teaching methodology, nobody plays the dummy and everybody can train and learn together. The training philosophy is to first learn to follow, for beginners a must, the higher graded students lead and feed the newer students impulses, then learn to lead yourself - intermediate level, then to play the game - mix it up, the advanced level. The Wing Chun fighting and power principles are universal and on top of these are the mottoes to help learn the principles of fighting whether it be mirroring, same for same or nose to nose... all relevant to how well you can read your opponent, your reflexes, timing and of course how often you train...

Wing Chun We use a matrix of nine basic arm shapes, that every student learns how to transition, flow and first and foremost, how to fight with them... This is what makes the training special, every student sees an application or scenario that really applies to them, their size, build and even gender... We have a relatively simple framework for learning Chi Sau, (the skill of reading an opponent through touch) hand drills to sharpen your awareness and improve tactile sensitivity. The main Chi Sau movements are reduced to their essential movements and impulses - this speeds up the whole learning process. Using this framework, more movements can be added at will, or, appropriate skill level according to the student or teacher. Great emphasis is placed on fighting footwork, position and balance, whether the steps come from a higher program or not is irrelevant, the student learns that Wing Chun is an entity and the whole system works together, not separately. Of course there are still the Wing Chun forms, open hand forms, wooden dummy and weapons, all of which are included in the system. Master Cameron’s maxim is to learn all the Wing Chun forms in the shortest time possible and then spend a lifetime mastering them… Now I teach children, teenager, adult and ladies self defense classes, de-escalation workshops and special courses for security companies. Dear BUDO lovers, this third world-wide BUDO MASTERS event to be held in the Eternal City of Rome is a unique opportunity which we celebrate every two years, to gather and meet in person Masters, professors and instructors of the most different styles, in addition to sharing and enriching the culture and fraternity of Martial Arts. A great party where you will meet some of the most famous Masters from all over the planet, most of them extremely popular, as they have shared their knowledge in the pages of our magazine, as well as in books and videos over the past 32 years. New masters will be welcomed in this family that never stops growing, and whose only identity sign is respect and professionalism.

Our magazine, currently published in 9 languages - Spanish, English, Italian, Portuguese, German, French, Chinese, Turkish and Japanese - will support with all its potential, in the realm of media, networks and communications in general, this excellent initiative of the respected Master Sifu Paolo Cangelosi and our director Alfredo Tucci. It is not like in the sterile classroom where everything is just right and your partner tries not injure you. In the street, your opponent will do whatever he can to injure you. This is why we strive to avoid self-defense situations before we get drawn into a horrible scenario. This is also why I encourage all of you to train realistically (against a non-cooperative partner) in all the ranges of combat. You never know where a fight might start or where it will go. You may be a gr eat striker, but if you get tackled from behind you are now in a ground fight. I believe that we all, regardless of style, need to be able to fight well in kickboxing range, in the clinch, and on the ground. Thankfully, mor e and mor e Mar tial Ar ts instructors are incorporating ground fighting into their classes. This is a very intelligent and humble act.

et’s face it, nobody knows everything, but we do our students and ourselves a big favor by offering a complete approach. I still see quite a few Martial Artists who try to take the easy way out. Instead of putting the ego aside and getting down on the mat with a qualified instructor, they fall back on this philosophy: “If I ended up on the ground, I would just eye gouge and bite.” If only it were that easy! If it was so simple, we would skip the kickboxing altogether as well. Why kick and punch when you can just step in, grab the assailant, and eye gouge or bite? The truth is that biting and gouging do not always work. Here is a true story that brings the point home. Three of my friends, all Brazilian, are experts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. One is a black belt; the other two are brown belts. As usual, there is a rival school of BJJ. One of the instructors in the rival school, also Brazilian, is known for having a very bad attitude. He gets into a lot of trouble. One night my friends were out on the town and went into a nightclub. Sitting there at the bar was the rival instructor. It didn’t take long for an argument to ensue. One of the brown belts had enough and challenged the rival to a fight. The rival refused, claiming that he had been drinking too much. Before it went any further, my friends wisely left the nightclub. What they did next was not so wise. Instead of going elsewhere, they stayed across the street to pass the time talking about the event that had just transpired. A few minutes later, out of the club came the rival instructor along with two very large Polynesian men. All three were very angry as they strode across the street intent on

violence. The rival went straight for the brown belt while my other two friends took care of the big guys. A quick clinch, a few knees, and the large bullies decided against continuing. Meanwhile, my friend had thrown the rival to the ground and maneuvered for a submission. He caught the arm, swung his legs into position, and applied the arm lock. He heard the elbow crack as he lifted his hips. Instinctively, he let go, assuming that the fight was over. Bad assumption. The rival rolled over, gouging at my friend’s eyes. He pulled my friend close and bit him repeatedly on the face. My friend immediately started gouging at the eyes in return. He was able to get on top of the rival and was inflicting serious damage when my other friends pulled them apart. They left quickly before any further problems arose. What should we learn from this lesson? First, don’t be in a place where trouble is imminent. Second, what happens when you eye-gouge a grappler? He starts eyegouging back. The eye gouges did not stop the fight and the bites did not stop the fight. They only made my friend fight harder. My friend suffered from bite marks all over his face along with swollen, blood shot eyes. I saw him the next day and his face was an awful mess. But as bad as the bites and gouges were, they did not stop him from regaining a dominant position on his opponent. The adrenaline of the fight kept him from feeling the pain. The moral of the story is that we should never solely rely on eye gouges and biting to get us out of a bad situation. We may use them to make a little space to help with an escape, but if we aren’t well versed on the ground we can’t expect to survive on the ground.

Budo Classics Another lesson is to always go for the choke instead of relying on arm locks. If the opponent can take the pain of the lock, he will keep going. A well-placed choke will stop him cold, regardless of what kind of drugs he may be on. If you are thinking about supplementing your training with grappling, please do so. I have been training in BJJ for many years (currently a brown belt) and I love it. It has made a great difference for my students and me. Mastering the basics more quickly When one sets out to undergo training at the Kung Fu School Martin Sewer, as it is actually common in all systems, one starts with the ver y basics, i.e. with the stances, legwork, basic techniques, basic kicks and general improvement of f i t n e s s a n d f l e x i b i l i t y. O f course mental aspects such as discipline, r espect and control go hand in hand with the above-mentioned parts related to the body. We have noticed that over the past few years beginners tended to cling to this level and that they subconsciously assumed that this was the final point to be achieved. In addition, reaching this black belt level also represented an unattainable goal to many. In the end many years, too many to be honest, had passed before one could successfully complete the basic school, so that the student could dedicate himself or herself to the â&#x20AC;&#x153;higherâ&#x20AC;? education.

Kungâ&#x20AC;&#x2C6; Fu

This has already changed and is going to be continually improved in future. Of course it takes time to become a good black belt student. This will not change in the future. However, it seems that people are starting to understand that achieving a black belt represents the completion of the basic school and that in reality, it is only after having completed it, that it gets really interesting. Especially he or she who was disappointed, because he or she was not invited to an examination should know that the “old” way was very different from today. Back then one would usually start the training with the first main form, the Gung Gee Fok Fu Kuen (Taming the Tiger Fist). Alongside one would lear n, in a rather unsystematic manner, various techniques and principles of our style without ever receiving any acknowledgment by means of a colorful belt. The only acknowledgement of one’s own capabilities one obtained by exercising with one’s fellow students and by testing in real fights and duels in the streets. Back then, it was common as a student to spend every evening in the Mo Kwoon (teaching room, “war room”) to train and thus, depending on the student, one made progress very quickly and learnt excellent skills under the wing of a good sifu. Unfortunately, in the West, we do not have the possibility of investing this amount of time any longer. Of course, today the daily threat of street gangs and robbers is not as severe as in the past. Nevertheless, we still want to fully learn our traditional art and develop skills. And in order to do so we have, unlike in earlier times, another advantage today, i.e. structure. Especially we Swiss people would say

Kungâ&#x20AC;&#x2C6; Fu that structure in the traditional way to learn Hung Gar was a foreign word to the teachers (mine included). One relied on the studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s willingness to learn, the proven system and on a long studentteacher relationship which revealed the real character. Like I said, we do not have that time at our disposal. But we have our structure. As I have already described in other articles, our structural approach of the teaching and planning helps us to make progress as efficiently as possible despite the fact that one has less time to invest. The senior students of my school strive to optimize processes especially with regard to the education of every single student, as well as to the procedures within the school. On the part of students it is an important step to have a realistic assessment of the education and the time required. In order to achieve that there are many good systems, of which that of Anthony Robbins comes to my

mind. His RPM- system (Rapid Planning Method) is a good example of how one should approach the education in our Kung Fu style and of how one could plan respectively. Success is defined by setting goals and achieving them. These goals do not have to be followed rigidly, on the contrary, they may change due to newly acquired knowledge during the education. It depends on the student which of the numerous planning systems he or she wants to use and how he or she wants to eventually implement his or her own plan. With respect to our Kung Fu system I see two points I would like to be mentioned in particular:

1. Planning, reflecting, visualizing I often see people plan their vacation more meticulously than anything else in their lives. Especially because they (can)

imagine what the vacation is going to be like. Why not also for their Kung Fu education? Planning systems are abundant. Here it is important to be honest with oneself, to ask oneself until when one wants to have achieved what level, to visualize oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goals and to ask oneself how it feels once the goal is achieved. It is also crucial to regularly consult oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teacher or instructor. Then, nothing stands in the way of moving forward successfully.

2. Realistic comparison I often see how students compare themselves with their instructors and by doing so get the wrong image of the black belt student. Many of my instructors have been a black belt for many years and, logically, have gradually become better by means of many more lessons. Thus, a comparison to a beginner is not fair in the first place. In

order to be able to assess the level for the black belt examination, one would have to compare oneself to someone who has recently passed the exam. Fortunately, there are enough students who have passed it. Yes, it may very well be that it takes years before one can graduate from basic training, similar to an apprenticeship, three or four years for example; depending on the student longer or shorter. But in any case it is achievable for any eager student within a reasonable period of time. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s summarize: A good training that is continually improved is available. There is no doubt about the quality of the system per se. What its required though is a plan, a good planning system, respectively and an ambitious goal for each student, so that we efficiently reach the black belt on a high quality level and way beyond. Thus, we are aware of the fact that it is above all up to the student himself or herself

to give it some thought and to contact his or her teacher, in order to ask for advice as to how and what to practice for his or her next level. Especially “Blackbelt” and “Leadership” programs at my school, which are established more and more, are designed to ensure that there are enough lesson opportunities and regular goal agreements for the student. With a constantly growing team of instructors, an excellent Kung Fu system and hard-working students who are willing to learn we are going to succeed in making our education even better and in helping each and every student, who wants to, to reach better health, a healthier mind, excellent fighting abilities and the completion of the basic training. My senior students and I are convinced of that!

Sifu David Delannoy presents his second work, focused on Jeet Kune Do and Self-Defense and built like a puzzle. It highlights and puts into practice some very important points in self-defense, such as the three phases of an aggression, body movement and shifting, opening of the visual field, response to an aggression according to law, physical destruction, vital areas, etc. With respect to the doing away of the physical threat, one of the essential principles of the Philippine martial arts is applied: the overriding of the attacking member and the importance of immediate responding to an aggression immediately when they hit us. Our response to aggression is simply proportional and immediate to the attack. Then, we configure the puzzle by adding elements depending on the development of the situation. Sifu Delannoy explains in detail the vital points and essential areas, the pinching, how to protect against a boxer, displacements and visual field, protections and destructions against simple attacks, reactions to strangulations, grips and headbutting, how to use the attackerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body as a shield, defenses against stick and knife attacks, the use of everyday objects to defend ourselves. In case of aggression, respect for life, lucidity and survival instinct are necessary parameters that make you make good decisions.

RECEIVING AND PROCESSING INFORMATION BY HUMAN Based on the latest developments in the field of practical psychology, consider the leading representative systems of man (each of us has it own), through which a person receives, processes and transmits information. We have already talked about the left and right hemispheres of the human brain and their functional a s y m m e t r y. Nevertheless, I repeat. The left hemisphere takes marksmarkers on objects, actions, etc. The right hemisphere is analogues, images. So, we can say that the left half of the body is more logical, responsible for the mind, and the right, more sensual, represents the realization of the subconscious.

Systema If for 100% we take all the information coming to the brain of the person, then 5% will be its logical processing, 95% - sensual (output to the subconscious, the unknown, the infinite and the beyond). But here it is necessary to say that if a person does not use his logical abilities, then the outlandish world (illogical) for him remains incomprehensible. The right hemisphere is connected with the left side of the body: the left eye, the ear, the nostril, etc., the left hemisphere is connected to the right side of the body. Russian Tradition I propose to present it as follows. There are two channels in the human spine: sensory and motor, with which the work of the entire nervous system is connected. These channels begin in the coccyx and go up: the sensory (sensitive - analog) on the left side of the body, the motor (logical-digital) - on the right. Then they cross over, the sensory goes to the right, and the motor one goes to the left hemisphere. The channels are connected with the nostrils (every two hours one of the channels predominates, which is reflected in the fact that one person has one nostril partially covered). Only the uniform operation of the hemispheres creates a harmonious personality. Communication of people is carried out simultaneously on two levels: verbal (verbal) and non-verbal (gestures, facial expressions, etc.). As a rule, people control their verbal behavior (their speech) well. Non-verbal is carried out on a subconscious level, so a person entering communication may not even be aware of his characteristic gestures, his familiar facial expressions. If the information transmitted by a person at both levels is the same, then such a person is subjectively perceived by others as sincere (congruent). If the verbal level (for example, praise) contradicts the non-verbal level (frowning brows, etc.), then such a person will seem insincere (incongruent).

Perception Systems The founders of NLP, R. Bendler and D. Grindsr, distinguish three channels of perception:

From the predominance of this or that channel of perception depends on the vocabulary of speech, non-verbal reactions, the organization of the interpersonal space of communication. Since most people tend to prefer any one representative system and perceive the world in fact through its prism, therefore, "joining" to a person entering into interaction with it, it is necessary to determine its leading channel of perception and start interacting with it on this channel. Chooses words that denote taste, smell, movement, sensation of temperature: warm, cool, rough, grasp, feel, hold, contact, etc., the terms of a particular action.

Anchor An anchor can be called a conditioned reflex, which can manifest itself in each of the three systems of perception. Most people are constantly resorting to their memory, returning to their past. Sometimes we specially remember some things or incidents, and sometimes suddenly the events emerge on their own, it would seem suddenly and nowhere ... Looking at the photographs, we return to the events of the past and can experience them again. Hearing familiar music, we instantly match it with some events and again plunge into them. Some people are extremely fond of staying in the past, actually living there. Such people are aggressive to their future and are not able to live in the present. The ability of people to "come back", remember their past can be used. Sit down in front of your friends in a chair.

Systema Then ask him to remember something good, positive. As your interlocutor remembers the event or its fragment, your task is to closely monitor it. It is possible that he will start to smile or even laugh. It is important, at this very moment, with his hand, on the left side of him, to touch his armanchor. At the top of his sensitive memories, while already on the right side of him, touch with his hand his right hand - put the second anchor. Then, after some interruption, go to the person sitting on the left side and touch it with your left hand just like you touched it while setting the anchor. Perhaps you will find that this person will return to the same state that arose when he remembered the good moment of his life. Do the same with the right hand (use the second anchor) and you will find that the person is again experiencing a negative event. Further, in order to balance the state of your interlocutor, you need to go to him, at the same time put your hands on his hands, i.e., simultaneously on two anchors. From all this it follows that the anchors can be arranged and used as needed. In other words, these processes can be controlled. Throughout life, we are constantly dealing with the installation and use of anchors. Kinesthetic anchors are the most persistent and durable, but anchors can be used in two other systems of perception: auditorysound and visual-visual.

The Lost Art of Learning By: Grandmaster Taejoon Lee

My father, the Founder of Hwa Rang Do® Supreme Grandmaster Dr. Joo Bang Lee, used to tell me stories of how he was trained by his master Suahm Dosa, who was a Buddhist monk, practicing hermitage in the mountains near Seoul, South Korea. My grandfather gave to Suahm Dosa two of his sons to be trained in the ancient martial and healing art of the Hwarang Knights, which was passed down for 57 generations to Suahm Dosa. My father started his training at the ripe young age of five years old.

Hwa Rang Do e told me that Suahm Dosa hardly ever spoke a word and that he would show him a technique only once. Then, he’d have to practice it until it’s perfect and if he didn’t do it right, he would get lashings and harsh physical discipline. There were no detailed corrections, no insightful remarks, no breakdown and analysis of the mental and emotional states, no discussion at all. Just the beating, then sent away to practice, until finally he succeeded, which then was rewarded with another technique. No praise, no high fives, no compliment, no pat on the head, no consenting smile, nothing. This was also my father’s method of teaching. He would show a technique only once to me and I would have to practice as long as it took to get it right. However, there were no

lashings, no beatings, just harsh criticism and discipline. Although, not to brag, but I really never experienced much negative consequences or harsh discipline from training. All my memories of training as a child are filled with happy, excited, and enriching moments. My discipline came not from training or on the mat, but for mistakes in life and my behavior off the mat. This would prove true into my adulthood. In addition to the rigorous daily training, my father also had to tend to all the daily chores of cooking all the meals, cleaning, and labor no matter what the weather conditions were like. In Korea, there are four distinct seasons with the summers extremely hot and humid and the winters freezing cold and wet. There was no complaining or whining, nowhere to run and no one to cry on. He had to

Hwa Rang Do persevere and show that he deserved the discipleship; quitting or failure was never an option. Traditionally, martial arts have always been taught this way. It is learning how to fight, how to be strong, how to live and not die in battle. It was a serious endeavor, which in its foundation was to cultivate a determined will to persevere and overcome no matter the odds, a courageous heart, and a strong spiritual core, embracing oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mortality. It was the responsibility of the student to watch, learn, and practice until his skills were tested by having to fight a more senior, experienced student. If he holds his ground, do not coward in fear, or even win, and then he would be promoted. If he loses, freezes in fright, or surrenders, then he must go back to training until the next challenge. There is a saying in martial arts that one must steal the knowledge from his master. That knowledge is not freely given and only the ones who truly desire to learn, paying attention, commit to practice, and sacrifice their time, that only then can one excel. Martial Art is not like other sports or hobbies. Consider the purpose of the subject matter, its aim is learning the most effective ways of how to hurt, maim, and even kill another person. It should not be for fun, for entertainment, or amusement, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a serious endeavor, which must be pursued and taught with care, respect, humility, and reverence. It is a truly transformative experience that empowers the powerless, cultivates self-belief within the unbeliever; it is in many ways a method of making ordinary people extraordinary and with it comes great responsibility. First and foremost, the student must be taught humility and respect for others, for human life, this by far is the greatest challenge and no matter how well we teach, how careful we disseminate our knowledge, many fall victim to the ego, becoming arrogant, self-indulgent, and lust after selfglorification. For this reason true martial arts are deeply trenched in tradition, etiquette, formality, and a strong hierarchical structure where rank is gained not only from

“The higher the rank the greater the responsibility and burden” Unfortunately, many of these important aspects of martial training are being lost due to commercialization and the glorification of combat based sports where the main focus is on the physical outcome and not on the development of human character based on strong moral, ethical foundations. God forbid, that a person will ever have to encounter even a single violent attack on the streets during their entire life span. However, martial art is essentially training and practicing for something hopefully will never take place. The reality of a vicious, violent attack where your life is threatened can never be duplicated on the mat and there’s no full-proof way of preparing for it. It is delusional to think that a few medals or trophies under your belt will guarantee survival in the streets or in real battle. Even the most experienced martial artists cannot guarantee that they will not hesitate and freeze under such violent circumstances and come out of it alive. Of course their odds are better, but it would be delusional to think that one can be ready for all possible situations. Then why should one train in the martial arts? Why should one dedicate their entire lifetime

“It is for the development of human potential.” This phrase has become cliché and many say it but what is the human potential? Is it to be the best that one can be and what is that bestness? To whom does being at your best serve? For what reason do you want to be the best? And when you say best, then you are comparing yourself to something, so what are you comparing to in order for you to be best? Often times, people say to do the best that you can, but how do we know what is best and when we have reached it? When you delve deeper into this conventionally accepted statement, one finds that it really has no merit, or meaning and it renders itself frivolous, reduced to a cheer or another motivational acclamation. This statement is referring to the idea of aspiring for perfection, to be God-like. This has been our struggle since the beginning of human history with the original fall of man. To the youthful zealous self, he/she believes that they can attain it, that they can be gods: To the wise, they realize that it can never be attained and are humbled by God. However, today there is a growing consciousness of a third paradigm, that we are all gods and that whatever we choose to do is what is right, true, and should be respected. “Knowledge is power” and in this information age where the collective knowledge of the world lies within our fingertips, we have become entitled with the delusions of

grandeur and power. Our technologies have devalued what is the most important asset, power, and endowment of humankind, knowledge. The greatest attribute of human beings in comparison to all species of life is our intellect, our consciousness. This is what makes us the most powerful in the animal kingdom. Thomas Paine who has paved the way for the American Declaration of Independence was quoted once saying, “What we obtain too cheaply, we esteem too lightly.” The value of all things is measured by how difficult it was to obtain it, by what sacrifices have been made to earn it. The thing, which is of the greatest strength and power for human beings has been reduced to a cheap commodity that no one has to work for or earn to gain. When a person wanted to learn something before the Internet, they had to seek out the knowledge, travel to a library, look through countless rows of bookshelves, find all the books that they can and then study them one by one. Today, all

Korean Tradition one has to do is Google. Think, study, go learn, all these phrases has morphed to “Google it”. This has created a generation that cannot form proper questions and possess the ability to seek for knowledge and unless one seeks, they will never find it. It is God who has given us the intellect, the ability to reason for one ultimate purpose to know the Truth, to know Him. The massive endless information that exists online surrenders the will to seek for the truth to a state of ambivalence and agnosticism. There’s too much to know and everything can be true and everything can be false so I believe in nothing. This is the state of our minds today for most. And, it is this state of uncertainly that no matter how good our living conditions are, how fortunate we are in our lives, we are unfulfilled, unsatisfied, and fall into darkness.

It is due to the hard, strict training that my father received and which he has imparted onto me, that we appreciate and value the knowledge we possess. The silence of Suahm Dosa, the unapproachable demeanor, the inability to escape or to quit, the countless chores and responsibilities all served a purpose to motivate my father, the student, to think, to seek for the answers by asking how and why, then finding the solutions on his own accord as well as instilling the value of learning through dedication and sacrifice. Learning, striving for perfection, achieving excellence is not a destination but a journey, a path, the way. It is this way “Do” (in Korean and Japanese) or “Tao” (in Chinese) that is the true nature of martial arts and only by ridding oneself of the ego and pride can one discover peace, beauty, appreciation, and God.

For most of history, the word “strategy” referred almost exclusively to military matters. However, in the last few decades, its use has vastly increased, and its meaning expanded to apply to many different activities and areas in our l i v e s . To d a y, i t i s c o m m o n f o r political parties to employ “strategists” to advise candidates in election campaigns; most major corporations have a “strategic planning” departments; many universities offer degrees in “strategic leadership”; sports teams coaches spend many hours preparing particular “game strategies”; managers are expected to develop detailed “business strategies”; and chess players are admired for executing the most complex “strategic moves”.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Generally speaking, when strictly considering Self-Defense, strategy refers primarily to preventing and preparing for a possible attack, while tactics refer to how to deal with and how to handle an attack that has already happened.â&#x20AC;?

he word is now thrown around so often that it risks becoming over-used and, worse, it is also used incorrectly, being frequently confused with the word “tactic” although the two words express very different concepts and cannot be used interchangeably. And nothing demonstrates that better than their use in their original military and Martial Arts context. But before we review the specific applications and differences of these words, it is helpful to take a look at their historical origin and their intended use. The word STRATEGY comes to us from the ancient Greek “strategia”, where its narrow military meaning was simply “the art of the General”. In fact, the Greek word for General was “Strategos”. A more modern and expanded meaning can be understood as: the overall operational plan to achieve a desired result or a comprehensive way to pursue a military (or a political or business) end. Strategy implies a long-term approach to a favorable solution. The word TACTIC also comes to us from the ancient Greek language where it was “taktike”. It’s meaning, similar to ours today, can be summarized as: the method or art of arranging things to gain an objective or to secure an advantageous position. Tactics imply a short-term approach to a specific situation, where both the objective and the tactic can quickly change and evolve. (Interestingly, the meaning of “tektike” has an intriguing similarity to the Korean “Do”, as in Taekwon-do or Hapki-do, referring to the “way, method, or art of”). Throughout the centuries, scholars have labored and debated endlessly to analyze and evaluate all the great military leaders of the world, with the intent of classifying them either as “strategists” or as “tacticians”. But that has been no easy task. There are few clear and definite answers and separating strategy from tactics is mostly an impossible academic exercise because the two are closely related (often overlapping) and exist in the same continuum. In fact, history provides us with numerous examples of famous military commanders who have displayed superior genius and exceptional leadership in the conduct of war, successfully dictating both the strategy and the tactics to be used. And while certain leaders are universally recognized or acknowledged as “primarily” strategists or tacticians (and a few only as “theorists”), it is interesting as well as educational to look at some of the famous personages who, through the ages, have contributed to our knowledge and understanding of strategy and tactic:

I could have easily added one hundred more names to this list, but the idea was to present just a small sample to demonstrate the extent, depth and variety of knowledge on the subject of strategy that we have accumulated over the centuries. And we should keep in mind that the strategies, tactics and theories of many of the military leaders I have mentioned are still studied and analyzed today in Military Academies and Universities around the world. Among the historical figures I have mentioned, Martial Artists will definitely be most familiar with Sun Tzu, the author of the celebrated book “The Art of War”, also known for his many profound quotes such as “The supreme strategy is to subdue the enemy without fighting”. Most Martial Artists will also certainly recognize the name of the true Martial Artist in that group: Miyamoto Musashi, the legendary Master swordsman, author of “The Book of Five Rings” and of the “Dakkodo” (The way of walking alone). And some of the more “scholarly” Martial Artists may also be aware of the fact that the Indian Warrior King Shivaji Bhosle was the leader of the Marathas clan, a warrior class known as the “Indian Samurais” that trained extensively in the Martial Arts. So, now the question that we may ask is: On a practical level, where is the core, the essence of Martial Arts study, is it rooted in strategy or tactic? According to my five decades of study, research and experience, my answer would be that Martial Arts training is mostly of a tactical nature, bearing in mind that, as I have previously mentioned, the two are often conjoined, complementing and supporting each other. The warrior spirit (and the more modern “Self-Defense mind-set”), require the understanding and the wise combination of sound, prudent strategy and effective, skillful tactics to achieve the best possible outcome. Generally speaking, when strictly considering Self-Defense, strategy refers primarily to preventing and preparing for a possible attack, while tactics refer to how to deal with and how to handle an attack that has already happened. Let’s review some examples:

GM Pellegrini Someone who is very serious about personal (and his family’s) protection will install quality locks and an alarm system (and even have a guard dog) in his home to prevent Home Invasions. He will also have several weapons “strategically” placed around the house and possibly a “safe room” where to hide and be unassailable. When in a building, he will always plan an “exit strategy” by noticing where doors, windows and stairwells are located. When driving, he will keep the car doors locked and the windows closed to prevent Car-jackings. When outside walking or when traveling (vacation or business), he will carry a weapon (where legal to do so) or a selfdefense “tool” such as a cane, a keychain or a tactical pen. He / she will not walk distracted by their phone or focusing on texting. They will also wear strong, comfortable shoes to be able to run or to kick effectively. And they will follow a

fitness program to improve their strength and endurance. They will have adopted a philosophy of life in accordance to the Cooper Color Code and always “live in yellow”. All these are just some components of a comprehensive program of self-defense. In other words, they are parts of a smart STRATEGY. But, as we all know, sometimes even the best prevention is not enough. All your prudent planning, all your thoughtful preparation, all your Strategy in fact, will not protect you from harm unless you have devoted time, energy and effort to serious Martial Arts / Self-Defense training. To use a famous military quote (by Von Moltke): “No battle plan survives contact with the enemy”. The unpredictability, suddenness, and brutal reality of a violent attack require a Tactical response and the employment of proven, effective, practical techniques. When your prevention program and tools have failed, you must change Strategy and rely on Tactics. That is why it is so important to study a Martial Art, such as our system of Combat Hapkido, that gives one the skills to fight back in all situations and environments: standing, sitting or on the ground; against an armed or unarmed attacker; inside an enclosed space or out in the open; in darkness or in full light. The training must include the most efficient use of all body-weapons: hands, feet, elbows, knees, and, yes, even the head. Striking, kicking, join-locking, grappling, pressure points, improvised weapons, all must be studied and practiced, to give you a vast, strong, instantly available, tactical arsenal. Martial Arts training is the indispensable bridge connecting strategy and tactics. And, as in the symbol of the Yin and Yang, they are inextricably linked, something that military leaders, generals, theorists and martial artists throughout history have always understood.

In this new work, Olivier Pierfederici shows the difference between real Close-Combat and Self-Defense, something that is not always too clear. True real Close-Combat is a mainly offensive and non-defensive technique whose sole purpose is the final neutralization of the aggressor, always keeping in mind that he is never alone. In Close-Combat, we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have too many techniques that would only serve to confuse us mentally; instead, we have what we call the "toolbox", with some key movements that will allow us to protect ourselves against practically any aggression. The Fu-Shih Warrior The importance of the "Tiger element" and the practice of the single component to acquire the "Dragon element". What is the skill that most fascinates and impresses you when you see a Kenpo fighter in action? Simple, the ability to make an infinite flow of linked techniques explode at very high speeds! In our Art, this "skill" has a particular importance to which every single practitioner aspires. But how to get to express this skill without losing power? How to get to manifest the Dragon without losing the Tiger? In accordance with the principles of balance, continuity and economy of movement, the expression of fluidity and coordination, they must proceed together with a real efficacy of the technique. The real efficacy is linked to the destructive impact power. Do you want to control these skills? You have to control the single element: mechanics, technique, maneuver.

Each training session must include the practice of Kihon: single basic techniques, unrelated, to be practiced in the different drills provided in the multi-dimensional Fu-Shih methodology. Starting from the simple, from the individual, and reach the complex, the multiple. This essential concept is perfectly incorporated and expressed in the practice of our study program called FU-SHIH WARRIOR The techniques of the Warrior fit into a context of practice and study in which, after a particularly complex work cycle at a coordinative level, a return to simplicity and to the small is proposed , in order to carry out a sort of purification and selection of the essential elements, more practical, blunt and explosive.

Our founder, Soke Raùl Gutièrrez, created this cycle of techniques in 1979, giving his Kenpo its own identity generated by his own skill, energy and creativity. The restlessness in the research for efficacy powered by 5 styles that form the technical / conceptual sources of our Art, developed in Raùl sensei an unstoppable desire to research, experiment and elaborate. In the Fu-Shih Warrior, in particular, we find elements of American Kenpo and Lima Lama, integrated through principles and philosophy of our system. "Fu-Shih Warrior" is the name of the Kata that takes shape from the composition of these Personal Defense techniques. We propose a simple and efficient Kenpo oriented to the research for a quick and decisive action. The priority of this study phase is the improvement in the application of the Tiger element, synonymous with strength, speed, destructive power.
